Dolphins select Penn State's Jared Odrick

He is 6-5 and 305 pounds. He is a pass-rusher from the defensive tackle spot and the Dolphins think he can simply upgrade the defensive line in several ways.

He can play defensive end on early downs. He can rush up the middle on passing downs.

Jared Odrick is Miami's first round draft pick.

"I think I'm a great pass rusher," Odrick said. "I think I'm a great run-stopper."

The Dolphins believe they have added a three-down player. If I'm Phillip Merling, I'm suddenly feeling a little nervous.

The Dolphins have loved this guy since before the Senior Bowl. Then he went to the Senior Bowl and played and practiced well and hard. The love affair was on.

"I spoke to the staff going way back to Alabama and I knew they had a strong feeling about me but I didn't know how strong," Odrick said. "I can and will play any position on the defensive line," Odrick said. "I played the one-technique in college (DT) so if they ask me to play nose tackle, I'm for it. Let's do it."

Odrick played for the North squad in Mobile. The Dolphins coaches worked with the South squad. Odrick said he once asked Sparano what the first play of that game was going to be.

"He said, 'We're sure as heck not telling you,' " Odrick shared.

There he goes. Hughes to Indy.

I'm waiting to see if Merling, Smiley or someone else gets traded for more picks.

damn. hughes to the colts

But while there are some that are defending the pick, wouldn't the majority of people preferred we picked up a olb in 1st and probably a safety in second? 2 picks filling 2 needs.

BTW jerry hughes is gone

If Indy doesn't take Kindle, we should trade with Saints. Get Kindle and give Saints 2nd round pick and Smiley.

Until Merling and Langford consistently apply pressure, we can use an upgrade. Bottom line

I am "naysayer"...

Add depth to an area there is already depth??? sorry.. the guy is a great player.. but why not fill some other holes with good players availabe?

Sorry it makes no sense when Kindle is still on the board...

Hughes is too damn small to play OLB for us, IMO. We were never gonna pick him.

A fan doesn't have to agree with everything the top three make to be true fan ya moron!!! I didn't agree with Pat White in the second round either and I'm still a fan... There was too many stronger needs on the board we should have went with... I pray I'm wrong, I really do.

Man there is a Major Gay wad on this blog.
You no Dick b a s t e r e d. Hiding behind many a name.

We know its you b *tch.

This has the smell of Eric Kumerrow....don't get it twisted just cause I'm being critical....I still luv my team (even though I'm pissed)

Congrats Indy. U just pissed all over us. Odrick...wow. Does anybody else feel like we waited months for our 'draft genouses' to prove that the miami dolphins still don't know how to draft.

i'm sick of parcells and co. this was not a need. i would have rather sergio kindle, jerry hughes, or tay cody o

andyk well said

4:55 a.m in Germany and than this weird pick ??? Wilson, Kindle, Hughes, Griffin still on the board ????????????????????????????????

All of you whining about this pick because his name wasn't put out by the mock draft so called experts. This kid is a monster who can be on the field all 3 downs. Stop pissing and moaning because kiper or mcshay didn't have him going to us and look at the kids skills he will be a beast. Great pick @ 28

i think we will use a 4-3 scheme more this year...mcdaniels and soliai are better 4-3 tackles and we have more depth on the d-line than anything else

A confusing night.

but in BILL I TRUST.

Sportsmonkey, no need to correct.. No one's reading your negativity anyways..

I'm out to many dummies tonight.

Parcells cant pick? lol
You guys are frkn ingrates when you are not spoon fed ur favorite pick.
See ya tomorrow

He was ranked top 23.

Image depth??? None of these guys started...this guy will be the anchor of this line for a loong time..Not the flashy pick, but solid..

Mock Drafts are for Idiots.

What's a genouses?

I'm happy with the pick, we just really need a free safety bad or were gonna shredded again on D this year

Check out the quotes from Odrick on the post now.

Mando, do you really see us trying out the 4-3? This guys has the make up but I dunno. I like the pick but I dont love it, maybe I'm wrong.

Solid pick. Relax everyone, let the pros do their job.

Nick saban and Cam Cameron must have jumped parcells and the gang and locked them in the janitors closet before this pick.

Thats why Colts GM is the best at draft picking. Dolphins shoulda went for Jerry Hughes... The kid has an UNBELIEVABLE motor. Look at his awareness. Odrick gets turned around alot, and OVERPURSUES

Inimounts, Parcells doesn't know how to draft????? WOW!!!!!!

Anyway I love our 2nd round pick - BIG TIME - nice move. And we picked up another Special teamer in Dobbins - HIT IT

Merling is fast. Very fast - 4.68 40. Any chance they have a conversion to OLB in mind? I really am probably talking out of the wrong end but I just cannot see wasting decent talent like Merling by putting him behind Odrick and Langford on the DE depth chart. He's only had two years so far and his first year was pretty good.

I see what you're saying Mando but it really sounds like rationalization to me. Odrick may be a better than solid pick but with all the needs this team has I'm not so sure I get it. If this team were running a 4-3, absolutely. But, I really don't think he was the best player available either.

I don't think it's a horrible pick but it wastes Merling (it will be interesting to find out what they plan for him - a move to OLB or a trade; anything else is just wasteful) and he could have been had at 40.

Chase, Indy drafted him to play in a 4-3.

Fake ALOCO . Your mother 's mouth is open wide for my thrusting

I can't believe the crybabies.

With one pick people, ONE, we solidified another position on our D.

We pick again in 12 picks.

"I can and will play any position on the defensive line," Odrick said. "I played the technique in college (DT) so if they ask me to play nose tackle, I'm for it. Let's do it."

Great pick; amazing value. He'll instantly help our pass rush. And, again, the value is just too good. A lot of people had him mocked to the Browns at #7, and I think he would have been a better pick for them than Haden.

You Dumb A@@es keep crying about Kindel why hasn't any of the other teams picked him up in the first round? You ever think of that.

Are this many of my fellow Dolphins fans so stupid or are many of you actually Jets fans just pretending to be Dolphins fans to stir up trouble?

I agree with others who said we will switch to a 4-3. Nolan is no dummy, and he knows we are weak at lb. Crowder will be a waterboy soon.

There goes Hughes. No way Kindle is still on the board at 10 tomorrow. WTF are the Dolphins doing? This guy can't play NT in the NFL, and we already are fine with our current DEs. RETARDED draft pick. I'm very disappointed. This guy would have been around at #40 easy.

I seem to remember a while back reading that Mike Nolan told Merling to lose a significant amount of weight. Supposedly, so he could be converted to OLB. Am I remembering this right??? If not I should lay off the jungle juice! :)

Odrick more then likley will not play any Nt. He is a 5 technique. This isn't the guy that most of us had pegged. But what's done is done(is it?) Look at the strategy here. Odrick will be able to command 2 blockers, helping with blitz schemes. Also, now look at the depth we've added on the D line. This is a recipe for winning games. We can replace players on the line in different formations, and sets without losing production. We will wear out teams with our rotation. Always having fresh guys to dominate up front. Lets not freak out untill the draft is over. We got our second round pick back, we have tons of flexibility as to who we can take. This is a good thing

I can't F it believe this S H I T! We had an opportunity to make history here tonight. Draft Hughes and I would've guaranteed that Odrick would've been there at No.40 overall! WTF is goinf in Miami??? I'm selling my season tickets half price!!! Any offers???

Now that we have how many about 8 DT's I sure hope one of those (...) can play the secondary or cover a damn TE 3 hours of my time waisted!

Let the "pros" do their job? Like drafting Pat White in the 2nd round??????

take a look at the kid's film...plays a lot like JT

Jason, the jets wanted him one pick after us.. That in itself makes it a valuable pick

Lol Riley

I love the pick, i watch a lot of college football and saw some Penn State games and Odrick is rock solid. At 40 there is a chance the following players can be there that fill a need.

Linval Joseph, Cody, Taylor Mays, Kindle, Sapp, Nate Jones etc. Odrick ws rated higher on most draft sites etc then Alualu guy who went 10th to the Jaguars. You guys will warm up to this pick. Odrick is a player.

if he's anything like radcliff we're stoked. in tuna we trust

Why bother even ever watching the them pick in the first round any more as odds are they always pick someone who disappoints in name now and on the field later.

HORRIBLE PICK. God damn 4-3 defensive lineman being brought in to a 3-4 defense and now has to be taught how to play DE and NT in a 3-4.

Calmed down and had time to think it over. D-Line is where the defense starts. Starks is our only stud on that line. Kindall is really solid but not a stud. We add another solid player into the D-Line rotation. Not a bad pick overall. Plus we upgraded ILB today and with Dansby.

Plus we got Marshall and the 40th pick. I see us picking up Safety or OLB with that pick.

Trust in TUNA.

Parcells just picked a guy who is going to Anchor this line for the next decade...now he builds around it...stop crying like little biatches

A prototypical 5-technique end would look a lot like Richard Seymour, who was with the Patriots when Broncos coach Josh McDaniels was on the staff there. Seymour, 6-feet-6, had the reach to deal with the tackles across from him. And at 310 pounds, he also played with enough power to hold the edge.

Tomorrow should be interesting

Man I'm doubting now. Had a chance for an A+ draft (imagine Kindle 1st and Gerhart 2nd) now who knows wtf is gonna happen. Holy Hazues maybe the Dolphins take Usain Bolt.
