Dolphins select Penn State's Jared Odrick

He is 6-5 and 305 pounds. He is a pass-rusher from the defensive tackle spot and the Dolphins think he can simply upgrade the defensive line in several ways.

He can play defensive end on early downs. He can rush up the middle on passing downs.

Jared Odrick is Miami's first round draft pick.

"I think I'm a great pass rusher," Odrick said. "I think I'm a great run-stopper."

The Dolphins believe they have added a three-down player. If I'm Phillip Merling, I'm suddenly feeling a little nervous.

The Dolphins have loved this guy since before the Senior Bowl. Then he went to the Senior Bowl and played and practiced well and hard. The love affair was on.

"I spoke to the staff going way back to Alabama and I knew they had a strong feeling about me but I didn't know how strong," Odrick said. "I can and will play any position on the defensive line," Odrick said. "I played the one-technique in college (DT) so if they ask me to play nose tackle, I'm for it. Let's do it."

Odrick played for the North squad in Mobile. The Dolphins coaches worked with the South squad. Odrick said he once asked Sparano what the first play of that game was going to be.

"He said, 'We're sure as heck not telling you,' " Odrick shared.

Expect another defensive lineman tomorrow...trifecta like the double down

6'5 305 that can play anywhere on the line is a safe pick, is it a flashey pick no, can he plugged in right away and fill depth yes.

All you Kndle Brainiacs need to chill! You act like he is the 2nd coming of LT or Ray Lewis. He is fallen out of the 1st round.Dirt Bags!

Go Trifecta! Go Phins!

You guys know NOTHING about how football works...you could have 2 deion sanders and 2 ronnie lotts out there...if you have no pressure up front they would get SHREDDED...we drafted 2 very solid d backs last year and had all kinds of problems with our pressure last year, hence our saftey's getting scorched over and over...depth and versatilty creates a dynamic matchup problem for opposing offenses...I am certain OLB will be addressed tomorrow...once that happens, we can see what your next problem is. However, pressure up front helps your defensive backfied. Odrick will be solid and dynamic. Calm down.

Guys -- I have hor'ible news for you all: The crawdad that was drafted to play end has been eaten by Bill Parcells. All that is left is a pile of crab boil.

NJ---thanks for a dose of sanity on Odrick....the nervous nellies around here are a trip....but at least they've stopped Sitting Shiva for the "loss" of Santonio Holmes.

another thing: Funny how the AFC East has reacted to the forecast of Hurricane Brandon, loading up on DBs & all.

One pick and a lot of you guys having us switching to a 4-3?

What a bunch of duoche bags-LMFAO!

I suddenly love Odrick! So F OFF cupcakes!

John, I guess Jake Long disappoints you?? What a total A'S hole u are,,, go away

Cam Cameron..

I know Colts play in a 4-3. Doesn't mean Jerry Hughes couldnt be a great pass rusher in a 3-4 defense

I was wrong the Jags made the worst 1st rd pick....we made the 2nd worst....unless we are planning on trading some people

all the dick heads with the negative talk about the pick defense win championship cocksuckers

Go Dolphins!

"He said, 'We're sure as heck not telling you,' " Odrick shared.

when asked, "mando, where the hell have you been for this 'live blog'?"

He said 'i'm sure as heck not telling you.'

this guy is the same exact size as ratliff slow down and let this play out it could be good

LOL @ SEER, no problem.

We gave up too much too. From the value chart alone, trading back and picking up 28, 40 and 126 was only 6 points in favor of Miami, yet we swapped 4ths and through in 173???? THIS SUCKS - oh sure add in Tim Dobbins whopppeeee

Let's hope we do better the rest if the draft....there are still good players out there!!

KINDLE fell out of 1st round.....I guess 31 other teams are as stupid and incompetent as many of you think our FO is.

Even funnier is the thought that Kindle would have made this an A+ Draft....first, that ain;t so; second, THE DRAFT IS NOT OVER YET.....

Get a grip.

Players still left...
Terrance Cody NT
Sergio Kindly OLB
Linval Joseph NT
Nate Allen FS
Everson Griffon OLB

Awesome...they used a 1st round pick to select a backup DT. Maybe they can use the #40 pick on a backup tackle. Then, draft a CB in the 3rd round. Who cares if we're already set at those positions, we're in the business of collecting good football players....even if they're going to be standing on the sidelines.

Maybe we can package Pat White and Odrick to get a 7th round pick in 2011.

A prototypical 5-technique end would look a lot like Richard Seymour, who was with the Patriots when Broncos coach Josh McDaniels was on the staff there. Seymour, 6-feet-6, had the reach to deal with the tackles across from him. And at 310 pounds, he also played with enough power to hold the edge.

Kindle is falling for a reason, big time maturity issues, It's not just us that passed him up.

Defense with good players wins championships

Hughes gone....Kindle still there....what other line backers are there...Ricky SAPP..???

Go Dolphins!

Congratulations, Dolphins. You're the only team that wound up making a worse decision than the Denver Broncos. I'm so proud of you!

I love reading the negative commenbts from the mindless morons on this blog. Obviously you think you know better than Parcells and the rest of the scouts employed by the Dolphins. Why don't you sit down, shut up and see what else is in store for us. I will put my trust in the FO selection way before I listen to you arm chair scouts. Go to the Jets, they have so many idiots as fans and you should fit right in with them.

I know one thing fer sure, not ONE of you here have ever built a winning football team...I am thankful for that...Odrick will end up being a real good player for this team...Parcells just picked the anchor

Well guess ronnie brown isnt going to the lions for their second....

That was a very good pick, all this negative talk just tells me that you dont know much about football, know we have a 2nd pick before we did'nt remember, we traded two 2nds for a #1 recever WAKE UP

The Major will be our selection at safety

Maybe we can trade #40 to a Clausen loving team...

Go Dolphins!

I think Odrick is our next dt that we have been looking for. Is he a sexy pick no but a very smart one. He can play dt on run downs to clog the lines and then shift to DE on passing downs. I have faith in Mike Nolen's defense. Guys remember he knows how to put together a shut down defense. Remember when he was at SF and got Pat Willis. That pick is looking great now. Im sure Parcells and CO have faith in him and this pick

I think Odrick was by far the best available, I doubt Hughes was on the board and read too much negative on Kindle. Lot of pickds to go folks. You build teams on the O and D lines. The kid can play all over the line, lets see where we go in 2-3

"Penn State defensive lineman Jared Odrick has been one of our favorite prospects because he's smart, versatile, and looks like a classic 3-4 defensive end.

The Dolphins essentially decided to build strength on strength by taking Odrick. We suspect they would have taken defensive tackle Dan Williams is he was available, but he was taken one pick before by Arizona.

Odrick played defensive tackle at Penn State, but he should end in Miami. He joins Randy Starks, Kendall Langford, and Phillip Merline to form one of the deepest defensive end groups in the league.

The Dolphins will have the flexibility to play more multiple fronts with four defensive linemen after this move."

But I guess that just ain't sexy enough for you

Mike you just made me laugh ....my thoughts exactly

God some of you are idiots... Do you realize he's the same size as Jay Ratliff - a pro-bowl NT?

Having him, Starks and Merling/Langford on the field will be AMAZING up front. There are still a lot of pass rushers left in this draft AND we got our second rounder back (even better).

why not wait till tomorrow before calling for their heads. I hate... HATE Miami's fan base for the most part - fulla morons who cry about anything that isn't "their" pick.

Brandon Lang coming tomorrow

This is what the draft is all about. Was Odrick ever really linked to Miami? Of course not so i am sure there will be another player picked that we all did not see coming.

No teams show their cards. If they draft Cody or Linval Joseph they can have one hell of a D-Line rotation. If not i am sure a Linebacker or Safety is on the horizon. Let the draft play out before attacking every pick.

Mike ..me too

All you guys that are upset are just exposing your ignorance. Chill out.

Can't believe I'm the first fan to say this: Welcome to the Dolphins, Jared. Good luck. I can't wait to see you explode through sancheez and drop him on his shoulder blades!

Prepare for a losing Season.

I am sure Odrick is a heck of a player. I just want to understand how are we using the 4 good and very good DEs we have..

Drew brees needs to let it go and just shave his head.

STUPID PICK! WHYYYYYYYY!!! Tuna makes a good move (Brandon M) and then makes a bad one! We need OLB's not stinkin DE's!!!! I hate this pick. It's not like they thought there were better ppl in the 2nd round otherwise they would've traded down again to get another second rounder. Hate it.

I'm not upset that Odrick was the pick he is big and a solid player, I would have liked them to address a need though

It doesn't get any simpler than THAT fellas.

Phin boy, selecting one guy gives us a losing season? You're a legendary tool

except ratliff was a 7th rounder not number 28. I was 100% sure Kindle was gonna be called. Perhaps that is the real reason for our collective question marks here. I was thrilled with the trade down. 40 overall is good. saw a lot of reaches in the top 20.

Round 2 will be Worilds.

I called Movin' The Chains on NFL Network a couple of weeks ago and they called this very pick but at #12. They love this guy so even though I don't quite understand I'm good with the pick. My guess is he puts Dirty Sanchez on his back at least a couple of times this year. The draft is deep with DE/LB hybrids and the Trifecta knows this. Great move to pick up a 2nd rounder with all the talent in this draft. It makes the Brandon Marshall trade that much better.

Y'all are some of the most ignorant uneducated non football understanding s. O. B. S. I've dealt with in a long time. It's football. Games are won up front. Not with pretty boys btching about getting the ball. Block on the o. Get up field on the d. Must control the line. Must control the line. ON BOTH SIDES OF THE LINE.

Phin Boy, at least you picked the right name "Boy" as in immature little pr"ck who knows shyt

If I am not wrong Jason Ferguson play at 310.

We just got our NT.

I think a lot of you guys need to chill. BP and company know a hell of a lot more about evaluating and drafting players than most of you guys on here. You guys follow a bunch of mock drafts and you think it's the gospel!!

At the beginning of the day we wanted the regime to trade down and get another pick in the second round. They did that and the 40th overall pick to boot!!.....great job!!

Now I don't love the Odrick pick but what if this guy is able to play NT or what if he allows us to move someone else for a player or a pick or picks? So I think you guys need to let all this play out and chill.

And btw, I think it's interesting the guy I and some others on here wanted made it all the way through the first round without being picked. So just goes to show what I know.

So.....where do we go tomorrow? Are there some trades still to come? Gronk is still on the board. So too is Cody. So too is Kindle and Benn. Going to be another interesting day tomorrow.

I'm baaaccck.

The like the pick folks.

The Dolphins love this guy. They didn't LOVE any OLB. They didn't LOVE Earl Thomas as much as Odrick.

They will pick an OLB tomorrow. Maybe a FS also.

Other than Starks our DE's were merely adequate last year. This guy solidifies the position for years to come.
Merling and Langford can rotate in and out to keep EVERYONE fresh ALL season long. F ing brilliant.
This isn't the way I was thinking and that's why I'm no Bill Parcell's.

One pick and we've solidified a very important position on our defense. What's not to love?

guys, calm down. i could have told you months ago we were not taking hughes or kindle. they dont fit the parcells prototype. damn, you people watch 5 college games on tv and think you can scout for the nfl.
listen, there were obviously no nt's in the draft that we loved. i think you're gonna see some 4-3 mixed in this year. and guess what? we have a TON of big bodies to anchor the d-line which will free cameron wake to go nuts!
don't worry, wannstache isnt' running things anymore. we have a good front office let 'em work!
