Dolphins select Penn State's Jared Odrick

He is 6-5 and 305 pounds. He is a pass-rusher from the defensive tackle spot and the Dolphins think he can simply upgrade the defensive line in several ways.

He can play defensive end on early downs. He can rush up the middle on passing downs.

Jared Odrick is Miami's first round draft pick.

"I think I'm a great pass rusher," Odrick said. "I think I'm a great run-stopper."

The Dolphins believe they have added a three-down player. If I'm Phillip Merling, I'm suddenly feeling a little nervous.

The Dolphins have loved this guy since before the Senior Bowl. Then he went to the Senior Bowl and played and practiced well and hard. The love affair was on.

"I spoke to the staff going way back to Alabama and I knew they had a strong feeling about me but I didn't know how strong," Odrick said. "I can and will play any position on the defensive line," Odrick said. "I played the one-technique in college (DT) so if they ask me to play nose tackle, I'm for it. Let's do it."

Odrick played for the North squad in Mobile. The Dolphins coaches worked with the South squad. Odrick said he once asked Sparano what the first play of that game was going to be.

"He said, 'We're sure as heck not telling you,' " Odrick shared.

Also, Osi Umenyiora is a former pro bowler who can probably be had for a late round pick instead of spending a first round pick on someone who is neither the best player available nor the position of most need.

What good is trading down and accumulating a bunch of draft picks if they only hit on 50% of the top picks? Will they draft a Sean Smith or Patrick Turner / Pat White tomorrow? LMAO!

I will never complain if they take an offensive or defensive lineman, thats how you win. I really, sincerely loved the pick. Everyone relax.

Parcells is the same guy that drafted his successors Merling, Langford, and picked up Starks and McDaniels!

Starks having had ONE good year!

They BETTER be moving to a 4-3

Seer - True, so the Brandon Marshall trade may have helped us get possibly the next Richard Seymour?

Robbyhenz---

The very sad truth is that they aren't Jet trolss (tho that goes on some all year & heavily during games)...these are our homegrown ignoramuses.

Sad......but I'm sticking with team.....

You should hear WQAM now...acting like Tuna owes Fans an apology for the pick!!!

Yeah we made up for our 2nd and got another 4th. Oh yeah and a good special teams guy.

DAMN! I hate the Trifecta.

Next pick will be a punter at 40 so we have training camp competition.
We passed on Hughes and traded away from Thomas...

This is not a good night to be a 'Phins fan...

Guys you have to believe in the dolphins and all of this criticism is dumb let Bill do his job. I like this pick and he will be a great player in the future.

Seer, are u saying we are crybabies because we don't like odrick? Because I live half year in miami half in big ten country, and the pick is not good. It just isn't. Especially with the needs of this team. We need Jerry Hughes. And I'm going to tell you guys this. If we don't draft Taylor mays, then we don't have a legitimate safety and better fight for Darren sharper.

JEEZ--RELAX!!!!

We just got the #3 rated DT in the draft. Yeah--we have a number of holes, but there is no position on this team that is locked down (though BM and KD are getting paid as such). As another review noted--"The team still needs pass rush help, but if the Dolphins could not get a true nose tackle at this spot improving their depth at the 5-technique will go a long way toward helping out the nose tackle situation."

Odrick- huge, big motor, difficult to pinpoint at a specific position=versatile, not flashy, but plays angry, BPA around the time of the pick. Gives us talen and more defensive options. And--maybe as important, we keep him away from the J-E-R-K, JERKS, JERKS, JERKS, who were possibly going to grab him next (though I don't like the additional stud CB they got!). Odrick obviously suited their needs at the pick spot Vs the option at OLB (if not, why did Hughes go after to INDYl, and not Kindle who the flash bulbs have been popping over? And we go again in 12, so who knows.........and, maybe the Trio did not expect to see Odrick fall to 28?

We are still building a team here--at least 9 more picks to go--let's see where else "Fortuna" takes us!

Denverfinfan, go watch Tebow Dumbshyt..u live there

Yeah... I suppose we should all just commit suicide. We get Dansby, Marshall, Incognito (who I think will be a monster O-line guy) we pick up a LB on the cheap from San Diego... Recoup our 2nd so that we own Marshall for a 16 pick slide and a second rounder (for now) and now we have one of the top 4 DT's available in the draft... a guy Walterfootball had going in the top 25. God its hard to love this team so with the fans that it has.... Want to see a shitty pick? The Jests took a CB after they go after Cromartie and already have Revis who is arguably the best CB in the League. You all should have know it would not be as you thought. This staff is much smarter then you give credit... way to many "Fantasy Football" GMs in here and few football guys. Go back and look at the great years of the Dolphins and see who and where Shula placed emphasis on the most... it will not be WR's and its few LB's... Shula was the O and D line master. And its why we were always a winner. This draft is far from over...1 pick in and some of you sound like my buddies daughter when she is to tired to sleep and to awake to care.... Get a hold of yourselves and look at how much better this team is since January... either that or go chase your Traitor buddy to New York... and please, stay there while your at it.

if the trifecta is flawless and i need to "chill", then why hasnt merling panned out?

i understand the importance of establishing our lines. we have done that for two years now! d-line is our deepest position. we might as well draft clausen, we only have four QBs right now.

No the trade was good. Thomas is not better than mays. He's just hot. The trade was great, until they picked Jared. Not it's iffy, unless we blow it away in the second.

I think this is a great pick! He is a jay ratliff clone. He is 6ft 5 310lbs and hes 22yrs old. He will gain 10 to 15lbs of attitude in mia weight program. We now hav a dline thats stackd! Ricky sapp n sergio kindle will b ther at 40. Relax everybody!

All you out there that are mad about this pick need to think again just cause you don't know about this guy cause he doesnt get hyped up NFL Network like fools like tim tebow doesn't mean he is not a big time player go watch so film the guys hes got a motor that doesnt quit and is versatile. Football is won in the trenches and this guy is a Animal that will only help our d line we ever he plays.

Love how a bunch of burger flippers get on message boards and act as if they know NFL talent!! This was a good pick!!!

Terrence Cody, Sergio Kindle, Morgan Burnett or Nate Allen at 40.

"Odrick, 6-foot-5, was the 2009 Defensive Player of the Year in the Big 10.

In 2009, Odrick made 43 plays against the run, holding rushers to minus 24 yards total. 11 of his stops were for a loss.

At 304 pounds, Odrick will certainly fill a gap or two on the d-line and wreak havoc on rushers in the AFC East.

In addition to winning the Defensive Player of the Year award in 2009, Odrick also took home All-American first-team honors from CBS Sports and second-team honors from the AP and Rivals.com"

Lord how I hate this pick!

I new it would be a NT I just did not pick the right one. I picked Dan Williams o well Miami must know what they are doing.

Inimounts,

We need a FS and Mays isn't it. He is more of a SS as was Wilson and you saw how that worked out.

T. Cody, A. Benn, Mays and Kindle still on the board. We pick in 9 picks. Tomorrow will be a great day for the Dolphins. We've got too many picks plus trade bait to stay put.

Sparano always had an eye on this guy Odrick we scored huge picking up i higher 2nd rd pick than our traded great move DL solid Starks Langford Merling Odrick Ferg Soliai

Inimounts,

I l;ike you man, but Mays?

Dude you're enbarrassing yourself.

PS: there's a reason he's still on the board.

God, why do we always screw the pooch? We need SOLB, FS, a true NT .... no lets pick a 3rd down rush NT...perfect

Hopefully, I'm way off base. Posted by: DEFinFan | April 22, 2010 at 11:19 PM

This is a good example of the idiocy on this blog. Duoche bag, Odrick's a DE. Get It? Try to keep up.

Geez odin, why dont you keep up-he's a DE on 1st and 2nd but on 3rd he's the rush NT....that's if he can get on the field before Starks and Langford...your knowledge sucks!!

Inimounts, he's sayn there's a bunch of cry babies cuz this place is a hot-bed of the most overreacting, girly-men (to quote the governor) that I've ever seen!

Jb this from the team that wanted to move will Allen to safety and get Kyle Wilson? Don't tell me mats can't play free safety. Those of you that like odrick picked over kindle or Hughes are just blind fin fans and u thinking you're better than us is pretty smart I think, as is ye idiot who made fun of people who flip burgers

Speed and size on the defensive line... prototype player for the Parcells-Sporano system. Most versatile DT in the deepest DT draft of the last decade. DT is a huge need as we're missing Ferguson through one of the toughest opening 8 game stretches in the league. Good player, my only question is would he have still been there at 40? Mays is not the answer at safety, we'll get a better player at that position later in the draft. Kindle is a wildcard. But Hughes at 28 and Odrick at 40 would have been pretty special. @daveoconnor_DOC

Typical part-time fans only pay attention to the flashy names freak out when we don't pick the big names. This just in.... just because ESPN talks up a player doesn't mean he's any good just look at how far off their mock drafts are every year. To top that most of the players they talk up tend to be flops. Had to laugh at the guy who thought we traded Tim Dobbins to San Diego if you don't know whose on our roster then you pry shouldn't complain about who the dolphins draft. Dobbins is a quality run stuffing LB that gives us depth and experience at a position lacking both.

I like this pick. He is big enough to play NT and athletic enough to play DE. He is a 3 down player who will probably start from Day 1. A good call and better risk than Kindle who is more limited in his role than Odrick. I think we did well in trading down and still getting real good value. Let see what tomorrow brings.

would mind seeing up snatch up Golden tate with our next pick. Big time player thats got wicked skills and got return kicks for us. Sergio Kindle could also still be there and we still need OLB help

2 qb r going top ten tomorrow, I'd LMFAO if kindle was still there for us and so many of u r bitching cuz we passed him with our 1st!!

Odinseye I like mays, but My point was I was looking and the draft board and after mays it's Nate Allen and that dude from gt and that's nooot good

Ask Bill, I will bet you not one of these people crying on here are season ticket holders, not a f'u''cn one!! And if ur not, I could give a shyt less what they think...just like anyother business you take care of the people who buy ur product and pay ur bills, so Finfandenver, Ohio, Pitt, or anywhere else, ur opinion has ZERO relevance here...

U want our first pick to sit or play nt? Can't have both guys.

Bobbyd12 , half the idiot bashers on here are jets douchebags who fail to realize that jets were also high on odrick.

From NFL.com:

"Pick Analysis: The Dolphins needed to add more beef to their front line, and the selection of Jared Odrick gives them size at the defensive end position. As the "five-technique" in the Dolphins' 3-4, Odrick has the length to occupy blockers on the edge, and his relentless style often leads to disruptive plays at the line of scrimmage. With Mike Nolan slated to tweak the team's defense, Odrick could be a key cog as an interior defender."

You owe us an apolgy, Tuna....NOW.

T. Cody, A. Benn, Mays and Kindle still on the board. We pick in 9 picks. Tomorrow will be a great day for the Dolphins. We've got too many picks plus trade bait to stay put.

I think we still have 10 picks left.

Why are we arguing? Let's all just be happy we are not Denver lol!

relax guys....pat white is a GREAT pick! i love how some of you think that you know better than our front office. i know he hasnt completed a single pass and he was almost killed being tackled, but just because you want to play GM from your arm chair and say he's no good, doesnt mean its so. dont be a hater!

i guess people wanted a sexy pick, instead we got a lineman that can rush the passer.

I am such a dck licker!!!!!!!!!

I really thought we were going to select Kindle. what a waste of time.

Boyfriend will not be happy tonight!

Love Bobby D.

No one was in the interview rooms with these players except the guys making the calls... for all you know some of the guys many of you were creaming for were as thick in the head as Koota Kintea...... I saw an interview with Kindle and the guy could not even form a damn sentence... saw another with Dez Bryant and without football he would not have cleared the 8th grade. This is not a "Dumn Ass" sport... it has become very involved and a player needs to know more then how to cash a check and buy an Escalade.

so babbyd your sayin you cant be a fan unless you live in MIA

@Ask Bill Ruger,

I seriously <3 you and you can have my babies. That was the greatest post ever on Mando's Blog...

..

No I just pay Direct TV freaking 250.00 each year, aint that enough?

On Mays:

My fiancee went to USC so I had to watch them play this year - and Mays is not impressive. He plays only for the highlight reels and is incapable of fundamental tackling. I can't remember how many times I watched him completely miss people because he was trying to take off their head.

On Kindle:

If Parcells passed on Kindle at 28, I would guess he'd pass at 40 too; if Parcells liked him, he would have taken him.

Robbyhenz--

Hell....these folks wanted to pick Kindle at 12!!!!!

He is nothing like Ratliff...Ratliff ran a 4.8 40....this guy ran a 5.0. He only lifted 26 reps...thats not bad but not great either. Unless he's going to play NT...it was a wasted pick. They have far more needs to fill.

NJ I know, I'm just tired of the aholes who come here and cry cause their guy wasn't picked...Just STFU and go away..

Not thrilled but I do like the pick. Blue Collar, hard working, non-stop motor, mountain of man that can clog the middle or rush from the edge, a good pick. The pick will turn out to be like Odricks college career... not flashy but solid overall. Let's see what tomorrow brings.

Inimounts,

Hmm, I never mentioned burger flippers, I gave an opinion and what many people feel about Mays and his stiff hips. As for Kindle, as I said in an earlier post. I don't beleive is a bright kid and won't do well in the type of attacking defense Nolan has in mind.

I'd rather see Clemmons and Culver battling it out, than us selecting Mays, even with our 4th.

I like it, I trust all the FO people in our division that passed over Kindle....the pats need a OLB more than we do and they didnt want him in the 1st rd. I trust our FO that this guy will be a player for us THIS year. I find it funny how people go crazy over a pick before the guy steps on the field and before the draft is over...

Geez odin, why dont you keep up-he's a DE on 1st and 2nd but on 3rd he's the rush NT....that's if he can get on the field before Starks and Langford...your knowledge sucks!!

Again, douche bag, in Nolan's defense we have no NT on passing downs. He becomes a DT.
You're obviously a part time fan, leave me out of your ignorance, PLEASE!

bobbyd12 ,who knows miami can turn around and take mt cody tommorrow and make this line inmovable ! They will most likely go S and OLB .

Bobbyd12 shutup. Just shut. Up. Everyone gets to say whatever they want and I'm tired of hearing u go off because people disagree with your craziness. We are all fins fans. I waited months for this pick. I'm allowed to vomit because of it. If you disagree with what I have to say on here, as long as your a fin fan you're cool in my book (as long as ur okay with being wrong lol)

I am not hating this pick. I question it to an extent but he is a really good player and he will be a good for us (love the point someone made about the Giants and their overload of D-linemen during their Superbowl year). I am eager to see what they do with Merling.

Enrique - While I doubt you were entirely serious, I'll take those season tix at half price. Maybe Armando will be so kind as to put us together email-wise.

Overall a solid, not sexy, pick. Looking forward to tomorrow. There are a multitude of good players yet available. Go Fins!

I see them going out and getting OJ Otagwa(spelling?) after 6/1
