Dolphins set to acquire Brandon Marshall

The Dolphins are in the process this morning of acquiring wide receiver Brandon Marshall.

The Dolphins will trade their second-round pick (43rd overall) this season and another pick for the player who is among the NFL's best but most enigmatic wide receivers.

ESPN.com's Adam Shefter is reporting the Dolphins could also send a second-round pick to the Broncos next year but The Miami Herald has not confirmed that yet. [Update: The trade is indeed for two second-round picks, one in 2010 and one in 2011.]

The trade is not yet complete and not yet announced. But it is happening, folks. Marshall is set to fly to South Florida as early as today (Wednesday) to take a physical. The NFL has not yet approved this deal.

The trade is a jaw-dropper on many levels.

Marshall is not, shall we say, typical of Dolphins wide receivers under Bill Parcells. He is 6-4 and 230 pounds of physical playmaker. He is also a guy with a troubling history for domestic violence and being suspended by his own team.

And he is a great producer.

Marshall, 26 years old, has caught over 100 passes for over 1,000 yards each of the past three seasons.

Last season, Marshall caught 21 passes in one game against the Indianapolis Colts. The entire Dolphins wide receiver corps -- all five guys -- did not have a 2009 game in which they combined for 21 catches.

Only last month Dolphins coach Tony Sparano said Marshall was not a fit for the Dolphins and, well, everyone believed him. This offseason the Dolphins have acquired Marshall after Sparano said he wasn't a fit and cut Gibril Wilson after general manager Jeff Ireland suggested he would be playing well for the team in 2010.

The Dolphins have wanted to upgrade at wide receiver since last season and began focusing on Marshall at the beginning of this offseason. The club asked defensive coordinator Mike Nolan, who was the Denver defensive coordinator last season, for his opinion on Marshall.

I am told it was an honest report that included facts of Marshall's warts. But Nolan also shared that Marshall is the best wide receiver talent his defense faced last year -- that in practice.

This actual deal has been in the works for only a matter of days. But the possibility of it leaked out Tuesday. As reported in the previous blog entry here, Marshall told at least one Denver Broncos teammates yesterday that he was headed to the Dolphins.

A side note to that report, the teammate told Marshall he wished he was coming to Miami, also.

Once this trade becomes official, the Dolphins and agent Kennard McGuire will finalize a new contract for Marshall. It will be an enormous deal.

I'm told the sides have already set parameters on a deal that will make Marshall the highest-paid wide receiver in the NFL. The highest paid WR in 2009 was Arizona's Larry Fitzgerald, who earned $10,893,332.

Marshall's deal will average at least $10 million per season and also could include guaranteed monies exceeding $30 million.

"Brandon Marshall is a friend of mine," Buffalo safety Donte Whitner said on his twitter account moments ago. "About to sign one of the most lucrative deals for a WR in NFL history. Congrats, bro!'

On the field, this get is a slam dunk.

Off the field, there are questions.

Marshall obviously wore out his welcome in Denver despite his supreme gifts. He was suspended once by the NFL and once by the team. He has a history of domestic violence -- with at least seven known instances in which police have been called or women have alleged he was violent against them.

In the locker room, Marshall was often engaging with the media but displeased with his coaches or the organization. To be fair, there were times Marshall was a coach-favorite also, probably coming on the heels of great performances.

But Marshall was unhappy because he deemed himself to be under-appreciated by the Broncos. Under-appreciated is defined as under-paid. The Broncos were reluctant to invest big money over a long span on the player because of his enigmatic history.

It will be interesting to find out if Marshall's contract has a behavior clause that would force him to forfeit or give back any money if he is convicted of any crime or suspended by the NFL.

The Dolphins officially have zero comment on this matter. Unofficially I'm told there was a great amount of debate about Marshall and, initially, there was no clear consensus on the matter. Eventually, however, that consensus was obviously reached.

Once official, this deal will give quarterback Chad Henne his best opportunity to become an elite quarterback. The Dolphins recognize they have an elite left tackle and a very promising signal-caller, but their offense was not dangerous for lack of a downfield threat.

Marshall, who has 25 TDs in four seasons including catches of 68, 71 and 75 yards, is set to become that threat.

Darry D,

Does this mean your bet with Cuban is off the board now?

Cheers,

this is F'N AWESOME

GREAT MOVE ..... MARSHALL will command respect and will help GINN avoid double coverage .... also, as the passing game improves, that will also benefit the rushing offense .....

Now, here are my latest final thoughts on the draft. Trade 1-12 for 1-20 and get a 2nd round pick ... Also trade Sweeney for a 4th and Thigpen for a 5th ... and keep JT

1. Either Graham, Kindle, JPP, Dan Williams, or Morgan (one of them will still be there at 1-20)
2. R.JONES,F.S.
3. CAM THOMAS or T.TROUP, NT
4. J.GRAHAM,TE from the U
4. (Sweeney trade) J.JERRY,OL
5. (Thigpen trade) MIKE WILLIAMS,WR
6 & 7 (6 picks) LBS LBS LBS ... I also like Kafka,QB, NW

Now I would like to see us get a WR who runs in the 4.3's and can catch the fricken ball (not Ginn) and our WR corp will be set!!!!

i think the tuna heard the fan base and agreed we needed a big time stud receiver! please keep thigpen and let him compete with henne. if one goes down(its the nfl) the other steps in with no drop-off. i'll give mike nolan alot of credit for his input on this one!!

VINDICATION IS SWEEEET!!!! I Knew this would go down and no one believed me!!! AHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

I've been on the Rolando McClain bandwagon for some time now but i've always thought Denver would take him at #11 unless Denver could somehow trade Marshall to a team which would leave Denver drafting Bryant(as a replacement for Marshall) and not McClain. As it happens,we've got Marshall, leaving Denver to grab Bryant and we still get McClain.

This theory reeks of awesomeness :)

I told Nick Saban, at a fan event before the draft, "pick Brandon Marshall, he's incredible." He smiled and ignored me. Go Dolphins! Go Knights!

I can't wait to go to training camp and hear the cheers when he comes walkin out. Now just sign JT and let him finish his career here!

Amazing how you get a much better sense of whats going on when you sit back and watch the off-season unravel. Who would have thought Marshall wouldnt get traded until he signed his tender, thats sarcasm incase you missed it.

They better eradicate these DUI's and whatnot though. One of those and Marshall would get a suspension for sure, aparantly quite a large one.

There is nothing better than disinformation to throw everyone off your scent! Way to go Miami front office!

wow what a move. BM is one of top 5 receivers in the game right now.

DEZ BRYANT picked at 12 ..... teamed with BRANDON MARSHALL at the other WR slot ..... that would be an awesome passing offense .... Then, lets trade Ginn for a 3rd or 4th round pick and get J.GRAHAM,TE ......

Ned: Or disinfectant!!
:>) (you are correct, sir!)

What I like about the move the most is it simply shows the entire world that you can't put an old sly fox like Parcells in a box!

Sooooo much was written and said about his crazed exacting standards automatically ruling players, positions etc out... whoops!

It would indicate a much broader approach than most (including myself) ever thought possible.

I am glad that Trifecta can keep the wide angle lense on at all times. (assuming he keeps his nose clean he is a truly exciting addition!)

Kudos to the Fins FO.

@ Dolphin Disciple AMEN BROTHER!!!
These fake Dolphans has been getting on my LAST NERVE. Whining and crying on these Blogs, I want to smack the SH_ _ out of all of them.

I'm not happy about giving up Draft picks in the second round but at least you cry babies got your wishes granted.
I hope a positive Dolphan like myself get my wish as well. My wish is for Left Guard # 77 Mike Iupati, so Henne can have ALL day to get Marshall & Ted Ginn (lol) the DEEP ball.

GO DOLPHINS!!!!! j. e. t. s SUCK! SUCK! SUCK!

The trade is a jaw-dropper on many levels.

Wait until they draft Dez Bryant .....

Does Bess give up his #15?

I work at night and was just about to crash when I heard the breaking news on ESPN....now I'm wide eyed and bushy tailed.I wonder when the first Jet fan is gonna come on here and say "Big deal....Revis will shut him down"

Waterboy,

Here we go buddy!! This is what you and I have been talking about bro!!

Brilliant.

Watch them trade down from #12 and recoup the the second round pick.

its an exciting morning reading Marshall to the Fish. Forget 4 games missin Santonio Holmes. The Fish got Brandon - 100 catch three years in a row - Marshall.

if they could trade down from #12 to pick up a 2nd rounder to replace the one they traded for Marshall and still be able to get a pass rusher in the 1st it would be some serious gravy - assuming they don't draft Pat White again with the 2nd rounder.

Money, I think you may be right. I never thought I'd say this, but a true #1 receiver would make Ted Ginn an intriguing #2. I mean, sure, go ahead and double-team Marshall, and there's Ginn, 1-on-1 with the defense's 2nd best CB. And what about double-reverses? What about the defense putting 10-11 in the box for Wildcat, or anytime? How do you do that with Marshall AND Ginn blazing down the sidelines? This opens up everything in the offense (we could be better than #4 running offense this year with this addition). I'm selling myself on keeping Ted Ginn, Jr. (wow, did I say that openly?). It's a new day Dolfans, it's a GREAT new day!!!

Mark,

Except they already have an ILB stud in Dansby and Crowder will be the starting sidekick ILB. I think they will give Crowder a chance at redemption for last years poor play with a lead Big Dawg in Dansby by his side.

I don't see the Fins taking McClain... even if he is there when they pick. Just my opinion.

Cheers,

IF WE TRADE DOWN 1-12 TO 1-20 (and get a replaced pick in the 2nd round) ... one of the following players will be there at 1-20

B.GRAHAM (my first choice),KINDLE, JPP, MORGAN, DAN WILLIAMS,C.J.SPILLER, DEZ BRYANT,JOE HADEN

assuming that we take one of the 4 OLB prospects ... then our replacement 2nd round pick should be R.JONES, F.S. from Georgia

3rd round can be a NT ... either CAM THOMAS or T.TROUP

I am so surprised right now...

As excited as Dolphins fans are...

Imagine how excited Chad Henne is!!!!!!!!!

Get to work boys

The Phins knew that Marshall would be traded to someone before or on draft day and the Broncos would then take Dez the pick before ours. This is a great move, he's proven.

Henne the Hero to Marshall the Maniac

awesome player, 2 seconds was a little high price, and i worry about him in south beach. but no doubt he is a playmaker.

Great move, altough it didn't come cheap.

Patrick Turner can start packing his stuff.

Just to make sure.... I checked the calendar.... It's not April 1st!!! Woo hoo!!

If this is confirmed today i'm gonna have a beer to celebrate. Picking up Brandon Marshall will make our offence scary with the wildcat and hopefully the rest of the receiving core will become that much better.
This is huge for the Phins!!!
Go Miami!!!

I cannot wait to see Marshall officially declared a Dolphin today.

A resounding YEEEEEESSSSSS!!!

I'm sure we did our due diligence on how to handle his issues. Probably, like you said, Mando, in the form of a contract stipulation. But on the field he's gonna tear it up for us! Behooold, Jets!! ...Now we have a complete offense!! And you grabbed Santonio whooo? Who's your daddy, Rex!!!???

Dez Bryant now goes to the Broncos with the #11 pick and the Phins can now focus on NT FS or OLB!!!

this is a good time to say!!!!!

I TOLD YOU SO!!!

ITS A CELEBRATION B*&^%TCHES!!!!

maybe we could trade pat turner to the seahawks and pete carroll who coached him at USC. they wanted a big receiver like marshall.

WeDidIt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!dat what I'm talkin about. Grow some balls BP. What a rush...

BMARSH!!! forget the chatter we've engaged in the last 3 months on this blog bc it is all irrelevant now. Once the deal is done, were a brand new team. Wow I can't wait for the Henne-Marshal express!!!!!

I think Ginn is officially gone now, someone out there will probably be willing to give the Dolphins a 5th rounder. We don't need him for returns, we have Bess for punt returns, draft a RB in the later rounds to be a returner or get Turner on the field as the kick returner. Once Ginn is gone we will have Marshall, Camarillo, Bess, Hartline, and Turner. Pick up another WR for special teams and were solid at the position. We need Pennington (and bring back JT) to keep tabs on Marshall to keep him out of trouble.

This might be crazy but we should keep ginn one more yr to see how it works.

mike,

I see your trade down scenarios posted a bunch on here and like a lot of the players you have in them. Do you ever propose who you believe the team trading is moving up to get?

I am thinking that R. Jones is more a SS type than FS. I think he is a hitter moreso than a ballhawk imo.

You think he can/will be a FS eh?

I like R. Jones much better in the 3rd than the 2nd.

If they grab OLB Brandon Graham in the 1st (especially with your trade down scenario with extra pick(s)) it will be a coup. He is a underated player and will end up having great success in the NFL.

Cheers,

Wow I'll tell you what guys, I admit I was one of the guys a little down the other night when the Jets got Santonio Holmes (though I did say I preferred the patient approach) Kudos to Bill Parcells & Co for being bold and making this move. A great day indeed!!!! And we still have the 12th pick in the draft. Amazing.

Wu1 that's a bad strategic play ur suggesting bc now that we have bmarsh, the field should open up to ginn while the fan and media scrutiny dies down. Ginn may surprise us now that the target is off his back. He's just not a big time player and I feel bad for cursing his family on dropped Td catches lol, but if he's not forced to be big time, he'll do his blazing speed thing just fine.

OH God, Here we go. Dolphin diciple, your comments early on are plais stupid. Everyone has an opinion and is able to share it! No one said they know more than Parcells, but people can say they don't like the moves. I have to assume your dream is to be a pair of Parcells underwear!!! Anyway, Carlito.. Yes I still am worried about the JT thing, I really hope we sign him. Especially now, that we may have more O, we need to field the best D we can. I hope Marshall can stay positive, and someone can moniter him in south Beach, so he does not make it "rain" everywhere. LOL. Nice to see we are taking a chance though. Cautiously optomistic!! Go Phins.

This is the best news thank you god we have a WR now yes.

Parcells is lord....I never doubted him...the man is a legend...and this move just gave our team a top 5 offense....Hmmm Henne Ronnie Ronnie and Marshall....can u say....championship!!!!

I gotta ramble on to work...

Very heralded pickup and I hope BM continues his 100+ catch season streak!

Cheers all,

ginn wont see anymore doubleteams so he could come into his own as a #2 receiver! he's always a threat according to the d-backs. it will be nice to see more of a passing attack for some chunk yds. that will open up the runs also.

Just saw a video of Marshall on Youtube and I can tell you in no uncertain terms that this guy is Dynamite. The best part is that he is extremely difficult to bring down after the catch. Now I just know that Jason Taylor is going to stay a Dolphin. No way I'm going to sign with another team after this trade. The icing on the cake would be C.J. Spiller. He along with Marshall and the other pieces we already have would make the Dolphins the most dangerous offense in the NFL. Think about it!

cha-chinnngggg!!

I guess Ginn could be the Alvin Harper deep threat that gets open due to the attention Marshall draws like Michael Irvin used to. Camarillo may have peaked, trade him for a 5th.

Brandon Freakin' Marshall!!!!! Hell yes!

Our entire offensive dynamic has changed...Take Ginn off the trading blocks, get the best OLB on the board in Rd. 1, best S in Rd. 2, and best NT in Rd. 3. Then LB's the rest of the way plus a RB.

GO FINS!!!

It feels great to have a complete Offense now!!!

AHHHHHHHHHHHH WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Ted Ginn is the biggest beneficiary of this trade, if he stays on the team.

Remember Ireland "the fact that Bill and I havent done something, doesnt mean we wont do it"

HAHAHAHA Long Live the Tuna.

Sorry, but i have to chime in again.

This is great if it comes to fruition!

please please please - everyone needs to stay healthy now.

Hey Dolphin Disciple...

Just read your insulting asswipe posts directed at all us bloggers.
Heres a novel idea...if you don't like this blog...just get lost!!

Theeere...that wasn't so complicated, genius!!

Bout freaking time!!! Keep producing like you did in Denver. Now what color of jersey to buy????

I agree I was really pissed when santonio went to the jets the other day but this move is just excelent...maybe 2 2nd rounds picks is hard to swallow but let me tell you PAT white was a 2nd round and that guy is going no where close to NFL QB...Merling was a 2nd round and still is average... beck and satele both 2nd rounders...both GONE...

ITS still a brilliant move for the hungry wr-phins!!

There should be NO EXCUSE for there not to be 79,000 season ticket holders or empty seats in this stadium...Steven Ross and Parcells have done their part, now let's do our part!!!

1st round pick - FS - Earl Thomas
3rd round pick - best avail. OLB/DE
4th round pick - best avail. NT
trade our way to a 5th rnd - anouther OLB

Build the b4est young defense in the league in the 2010 draft!!!!!!

OUR OFFENSE IS SET TO FLY!!!!!!!!!!

HERE WE GO FINS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
