Dolphins set to acquire Brandon Marshall

The Dolphins are in the process this morning of acquiring wide receiver Brandon Marshall.

The Dolphins will trade their second-round pick (43rd overall) this season and another pick for the player who is among the NFL's best but most enigmatic wide receivers.

ESPN.com's Adam Shefter is reporting the Dolphins could also send a second-round pick to the Broncos next year but The Miami Herald has not confirmed that yet. [Update: The trade is indeed for two second-round picks, one in 2010 and one in 2011.]

The trade is not yet complete and not yet announced. But it is happening, folks. Marshall is set to fly to South Florida as early as today (Wednesday) to take a physical. The NFL has not yet approved this deal.

The trade is a jaw-dropper on many levels.

Marshall is not, shall we say, typical of Dolphins wide receivers under Bill Parcells. He is 6-4 and 230 pounds of physical playmaker. He is also a guy with a troubling history for domestic violence and being suspended by his own team.

And he is a great producer.

Marshall, 26 years old, has caught over 100 passes for over 1,000 yards each of the past three seasons.

Last season, Marshall caught 21 passes in one game against the Indianapolis Colts. The entire Dolphins wide receiver corps -- all five guys -- did not have a 2009 game in which they combined for 21 catches.

Only last month Dolphins coach Tony Sparano said Marshall was not a fit for the Dolphins and, well, everyone believed him. This offseason the Dolphins have acquired Marshall after Sparano said he wasn't a fit and cut Gibril Wilson after general manager Jeff Ireland suggested he would be playing well for the team in 2010.

The Dolphins have wanted to upgrade at wide receiver since last season and began focusing on Marshall at the beginning of this offseason. The club asked defensive coordinator Mike Nolan, who was the Denver defensive coordinator last season, for his opinion on Marshall.

I am told it was an honest report that included facts of Marshall's warts. But Nolan also shared that Marshall is the best wide receiver talent his defense faced last year -- that in practice.

This actual deal has been in the works for only a matter of days. But the possibility of it leaked out Tuesday. As reported in the previous blog entry here, Marshall told at least one Denver Broncos teammates yesterday that he was headed to the Dolphins.

A side note to that report, the teammate told Marshall he wished he was coming to Miami, also.

Once this trade becomes official, the Dolphins and agent Kennard McGuire will finalize a new contract for Marshall. It will be an enormous deal.

I'm told the sides have already set parameters on a deal that will make Marshall the highest-paid wide receiver in the NFL. The highest paid WR in 2009 was Arizona's Larry Fitzgerald, who earned $10,893,332.

Marshall's deal will average at least $10 million per season and also could include guaranteed monies exceeding $30 million.

"Brandon Marshall is a friend of mine," Buffalo safety Donte Whitner said on his twitter account moments ago. "About to sign one of the most lucrative deals for a WR in NFL history. Congrats, bro!'

On the field, this get is a slam dunk.

Off the field, there are questions.

Marshall obviously wore out his welcome in Denver despite his supreme gifts. He was suspended once by the NFL and once by the team. He has a history of domestic violence -- with at least seven known instances in which police have been called or women have alleged he was violent against them.

In the locker room, Marshall was often engaging with the media but displeased with his coaches or the organization. To be fair, there were times Marshall was a coach-favorite also, probably coming on the heels of great performances.

But Marshall was unhappy because he deemed himself to be under-appreciated by the Broncos. Under-appreciated is defined as under-paid. The Broncos were reluctant to invest big money over a long span on the player because of his enigmatic history.

It will be interesting to find out if Marshall's contract has a behavior clause that would force him to forfeit or give back any money if he is convicted of any crime or suspended by the NFL.

The Dolphins officially have zero comment on this matter. Unofficially I'm told there was a great amount of debate about Marshall and, initially, there was no clear consensus on the matter. Eventually, however, that consensus was obviously reached.

Once official, this deal will give quarterback Chad Henne his best opportunity to become an elite quarterback. The Dolphins recognize they have an elite left tackle and a very promising signal-caller, but their offense was not dangerous for lack of a downfield threat.

Marshall, who has 25 TDs in four seasons including catches of 68, 71 and 75 yards, is set to become that threat.

PFT calling Marshall "a rich man's Keyshawn Johsnon"

My bad we don't have a 2nd round pick...lol way too excited!!!

GO FINS!!

Bobby GREAT point. I live in MA, and I want it to be hard for us to get tickets. Please South Florida, BUY YOUR SEASON TICKETS!!! Make a difference for this team!

Marshall's new babysitter is the Tuna.

Do you guys want/think we keep Teddy Ginn????

ESPN talking heads gushing about Marshall

We better keep Ted Ginn.

Can someone find the Post where I claimed that cutting Joey Porter was in preparation of landing Brandon Marshall...

Jamillion, see what happens when you believe!!!

Way to go BP & Co.! That was a great trade. Marshall for #43. Thats a no brainer.

This is going to be great. Yesterday, most of you were bashing Miami for the whole JT situation and now that they made a big move in trading for Marshall everyone is happy and loves the team. I don't hear any copmplaining today about the Miami Dolphins like yesterday.

Either way GREAT move Miami!

You're so full of it Armando can you ever give us something that's actually you know confirmed?

SUCK IT!!!!!

Morning Bobby. I know you are as surprised as myself on this one. I already admited being wrong about this one... never thought Bill would take the guy. Only hope Brandon makes us proud and leaves his issues behind. A one year suspension is hanging over his head and that would be terrible. Here is a hope and prayer for our new team member and I am very excited to see what is happening. I'll say this much... We have taking the high fruit while the Jerks have been bottom feeding... Dansby, Marshall... Damn and will still have our #12 pick to boot. Never doubted our Management for an instant. Here is to a great draft and a even better season... Chink!!!

Niiice. Santonio Holmes sealed this deal.

LOVE IT!!!
We're shelling out major cash to Marshall and Dansby, but both should be well worth the investment.

Here's hoping we can trade down from 12, and get a second round pick back!! Maybe Earl Thomas will still be hanging around in the late 20's, and we can scoop up a pass rusher after that!!

Great day in Dolphinland!

i like the move, and what the hell... it aint my money. how much worse can it get for the Phins if things dont work out, lived thru a 1-15 season couple years ago.

and all you clowns that would post everyday to other bloggers..."forget about Marshall, it aint gonna happen..." know nothing, go back to work or sleep or what ever you do

Ginn will never be a good reciever on this team, even with Marshall on one side so get rid of him

1) BRANDON MARSHALL
2) BRIAN HARTLINE
3) DAVONE BESS
4) GREG CAMARILLO
5) PATRICK TURNER

Hello TD'S...

I'm only going to say this once...stay out of the clubs Brandon.

Some of you were complaining how we could of got Holmes, but would you of rather had him or Marshall??

I am glad our offense is set to go now. I bet Chad Henne is a pleased man! Now, which WR are going to get cut or traded. I am guessing we will have Marshall, Hartline, Bess as our top 3. Also, it does not look like Patrick Turner is ever going to make it on the team...

Tuna will now trade down in the first to get that second round pick back. You can take that to the bank and step in line behind our new wr.

HOLY SHiTE!

I bet Tuna is mumbling under his breath right now:

"Eat it Jerry Jones, who isn't worth a shyt now?"

How about:

1) Have Ronnie sign is RFA tender and trade him for a late 2nd rounder
2) Trade Smiley for a 4rth rounder
3) Trade Ginn for a 5rth rounder
4) Trade the #12 pick to Dallas for their #1 and #3

Draft:

1) Jerry Hughes OLB
2) Nate Allen FS
3) Jason Worilds OLB
3) Ben Tate RB
4) Cam Thomas NT
4) Carlton Mitchell WR
5) Jimmy Graham TE

Well, since everyone else is taking care of the mental midgets, I won't pile on.

NOW, get ready to trade that 12 pick for more picks.

YEAH PARCELLS!!!!!!!!!

Trade down in the first to get Jerry Hughes

You guys keep talking about Ginn. What about Bess. He is now the next Welker. Dude was our best reciever for the last two years and he is like 5'2".

How can all you professionals even THINK that Ginn will be better with Marshall??????

Let's tak a short glimpse back a few months ago.....

How many game winning passes did Ginn drop???

How many passes did Ginn drop???

Eight, or 8, that's how many!

So, do you REALLY think that with marshall being doubled that Ginn gets open? Even if he's WIDE OPEN with nobody around he DROPs the ball, CANT CATCH...

I STILL say draft Dez. Dez and Marshall will give the fins the explosiveness to keep up with the Joneses of the NFL and draft a good NT and LB, OLB, etc.

I am so pumped about this trade. As I said to you Armando a few weeks ago in an email, he is the quick strike weapon the dolphins have lacked since Duper and Clayton. Looking at Parcells history with other troubled (primadona) receivers (T.O. and Keyshawn) I think this is great and lets the Dolphins focus on the defense and maybe an offensive line. Bravo Trifecta and Ownership!!!!!

Good chance we trade down...get our man (whoever that may be) and regain that 2nd rounder. The Big Tuna always wants Ireland to get his picks back.
...At least this years anyway.

Fasten your seatbelts people!! We're in for a wild ride!!!

"Here we go Dolphins, here we go!!"

Keep Ginn, Trade Camarillo

Keep Ronnie

Send Smiley, Thigpen packing for picks

Sign Sharper.

Trade Down in First Rd

Pick 3 NT in RD 6

Our 4 top WRs are Marshall, Bess, Hartline and Cam. Turner will stay for depth and Ginn is toast.

Marshall and Bess alone will give D coordinators headaches.

Jimmy Graham is probably going to be a 2nd round pick at this point. No worse than 3rd round.

Like I've been saying boys...Keep the Faith. Stay the Course.

Fins up!

Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome to Miami Brandon Marshall

Sayonora Pat Turner

"i think the tuna heard the fan base and agreed we needed a big time stud receiver"

Are you kidding me?? You think BP listens to the fan base? C’mon you cannot be serious. Why would he listen to people with ZERO NFL experience? Dude you are one of these “tools” I am talking about. Please shut up so everyone can enjoy this blog.

If you have an intelligent thought please share. If you have a stupid opinion tell you mommy and daddy.

Thanks Kiddo

Sincerely,

Woooo Hooooo.
Where are the Tuna haters now? Who gives a F
Now they can concentrate on defense in the draft. Bobby , I bet you were surprised. Crow is yummy when it is fried.

SHUT the Fck up Dolphin Disciple, you weak punk

I guess playing your cards close to the vest is the way to go and maybe people will stop trying to constantly guess as to what the trifects is going to do because you never know. I'm shocked but extremely excited about the possibilities.

The thing

Stop Worrying about the Draft. If the Tuna knows something, its Defense. We will plug holes at S, NT and OLB.

I look forward to a TE and WR in the later rounds.

With some many busted 2nd rd picks :White, Feely, Satele, Beck, Culpepper. This is wonderful trade.

rex just pooped in his pants

will allen will be our free safety until clemmons is ready and culver and clemmons will be nickel and dime. we are set at db's.

ronnie brown will be traded for a low 1st but more likely a second. hilliard is a bruiser and cobbs is utility. polite is the man at fb and ricky will continue to accent.

cj spiller will be our #1 pick at 12.

My God!!....this is a GREAT day!!....I know people are going to complain and criticize (it's what some of you guys do) but this is a GREAT get for the team. We've needed a playmaker like this for a long time. Pay the guy the money, I don't care. Hopefully he won't be the problem he was in Denver (I think a lot of that stuff was overblown).

Two things to add.....I always thought Bryant would be a better get in the first round because he's further away from being suspended by the league. But Marshall is proven! I LOVE this add!!.....very excited!!

Keep Ted Ginn!!.....sorry, your not going to convince me that getting a fifth for him is worth it. I think Marshall will help Ginn get open more and even if Ginn just returns kicks, he'll be worth. I'll be pissed if they trade him for a fifth. SO not worth it!!

There's a TON of you guys on here who owe the trifecta a BIG apology!!Most of you won't be big enough to admit it....I'm not surprised, that's who you are!! But time to own up guys!! And Bobby, I laughed at your apology to everyone on here, 'cause I knew you said this would never happen....good for you man!! Thanks for having the onions to own up.

I'll be on cloud nine all day!! Does anyone know just how close this guy is to being suspended a year? I'm not looking to take any glare of this great day....I'm just curious.

i was thinking you know how happy us as fans are .... now just imagine how happy chad henne is .... miami with a whole new deminsion well it isnrt new but it has been a very long time since miami has had a true number 1 1994 ish

Greg,

Tell everyone on the blog… do you seriously think BP listens to the fan base?

Morning Ask Bill, yea, I'm going to take a ton of shyt over this one, well deserved, but the guy certainly is a talent...I just never thought with all his off field problems that Parcells would touch him,but Nolan musta had some positive input...I'm a very passionate fan and hope this turns into a great move...and now that he is a Dolphin, I am a Brandon Marshall fan, I'm passionate not stupid...GO DOLPHINS

i am going to get a marshall jersey for sure

Greg,

I am just sharing my opinions like you do, whats wrong with that?

You think BP listens to us and I think you are foolish for it, sorry to hurt your feelings buddy.

Where are all the Chicken Littles now, that were screaming the sky was falling just 24 hours ago? I know there are some of you guys out there that wont like this trade, but I respect your opinion because for the most part you guys still keep the faith. For the rest don't tip the wagon when you jump back on!

Wooooooohoooooo!!! Finally something to frickin cheer about gents! All of a sudden our offense looks THAT much better. Screw the "problems" this guy has. I predict he is going to make Miami his "home" and all that is water under the bridge gents. He will be happy here. He will be awesome here. First time in years I actually wanna buy a jersey! Go Fish!!!!

I wasn't signing out as the thing. What I was going to say was the thing that is interesting is that in all of the moves and non moves the Dolphins make, in all of the contract deals and player negotiations, EVEN in the way the trifecta scouts players, Armando always has an opinion. He always has something to say about how Parcells and Ireland are operating and exactly what he thinks of them and what they're doing.

But today, when the Dolphins are about to make one of the biggest deals in franchise history. When the Dolphins are about to make a receiver the highest paid in NFL history, ARMANDO HAS NO OPINION?! ARMMMANNNNDDOOOOOOOOOOOO where are ya my man
?! How are some of these guys going to know what to think if you don't tell them?

Just kidding around but seriously Mando, what gives on just reporting the facts? That is very unlike you! :)

I waiting to see the negative spin on this by Armando.

Patience, it pays off in the end. So many people complain about the dolphins and complain about how they are running the team. Remember 1-15 people. We waited and the dolphins get brandon marshall for a 2nd round pick not a first. That is why parcells, ireland and sparano get paid the big bucks. The rest of us sit on the couch and stuff our faces complaining about them.

NYScott-

you forget that Mando & many commentors & bloggers elsewhere were THRILLED to bash Tuna as out of touch, behind the Jets, too cautious, etc.

So when Tuna threw the BIG curveball, they have to readjust, and that takes time.......coming soon: Brandon's a cancer, we paid too much, we should have gotten Holmes instead, it's too risky a move, etc.

The Cardinals told Brian St. Pierre to cancel his trip to town this week.

The third-string quarterback was expected to re-sign with the team, but Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic reports that has been delayed.

Can you Thigpen to the Cards?

Jeff Darlington on ESPN saying Ginn is a goner

Now that we have that #1 WR-I say trade down and pick-up a second rounder, select B Graham DE/OLB from Michigan with the 1st pick and then go mostly defense the rest of the way. This way if we can trade down we really didn't pay much for Marshall as the 2nd round for next year may not even come into play, due to the Politics of the NFL there may not be a next year Football Season.

Armando Has no opinion right now because just yesterday he said
"Brandon Marshall will not be a Miami Dolphin"

GREAT MOVE. Keep Ginn. He will wide open now and the pressure and focus is not so much on him. We can't get much for him anyway.

KEEP GINN.

Hell yeah finally a awesome move let's keep it going

Finally, something to be happy about as a Dolphin fan. Now if they resign JT, the question is what to do with the first rounder and how many more draft picks they can acquire via trades (Tedd, Ginn, Smilley, perhaps other). Now, if available to the Phins, should they draft Dez Bryant with their first pick and really have (on paper) one of the most potentially potent WR combos in the NFL? I say.....Yes!!

Armando, I cant blame you for sticking your head out and saying ""Brandon Marshall will not be a Miami Dolphin".. You took a stand and I respect it.

but you have to come out and comment on the move.

Also, do you think Ted Ginn is a goner?
