Jeff Ireland: The interview, the Wilson flap

I got the opportunity to speak with Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland one-on-one Saturday night after his work was mostly done with the draft and the adding of priority free agents.

That conversation gave me a better understanding of exactly how it is the Dolphins attack the draft when Ireland and Bill Parcells are sitting in the war room together. I wrote about that as part of my column that appears in Monday's Miami Herald.

Another part of the column, by the way, tells you how Ireland seemed to be getting more comfortable even as this draft was proceeding. He actually made jokes when he was in front of the media. The guy was cool.

But we're not 100 percent there yet.

This interview gave me the opportunity to ask about a topic that's been bothering me for a while now:

I wanted to know why it was Ireland seemingly misled at the Indianapolis Combine on the subject of Gibril Wilson. As you know, everyone assumed Wilson was a goner after a season in which he played poorly and cost Miami chances to win at least two games -- Indianapolis and New Orleans.

But Ireland went to the Combine and in speaking with the media -- to his credit, against the wishes of Parcells -- defended Wilson so vehemently that it seemed like Wilson was coming back.

"We have our evaluation of Gibril Wilson," Ireland said at the time. "We know what kind of player he's capable of being. I think he's going to be a very good player for the future. He was disappointed in his play last year. He will tell you that. I think he can play better. We'll just have to see. I think he will."

Of course, everyone assumed Ireland meant Wilson would play better for the Dolphins. Bad assumption. The Dolphins cut Wilson when the new league year opened in March.

"I didn't say anything that was wrong," Ireland told me during our interview. "I didn't say anything that was false. If you read the transcript, I said he's going to be a good player in the future. I knew what I was saying. You know, he's a player on my team. And I'm going to defend a player on my team. I'm not going to say anything else bad out there. I do believe he's going to be a good player in the future. I like the kid. It was probably not the right position for him. That's obvious now. But I did believe what I was telling you. I was telling the truth.

"I just wasn't giving you every thought in my head."

Fair enough. It wasn't Ireland's fault that folks like me made an assumption. As Ireland told me in another part of the interview, every draft mistake his makes is a lesson he learns.

Count this a lesson learned for yours truly.

And no one likes to believe me but Sharper's agent did an interview in which he said NO has put an offer on the table and he all but said Sharper is going back to NO

Posted by: bobbyd12 | April 26, 2010 at 11:44 AM

Oh and we all remember that there was no way Marshall was coming either. Well if Sharper stays with NO, you be hitting .500, not bad. hahaha

I wouldn't be surprised if the Dolphins use Turner as a TE.

I would.

be surprised, that is.

I think they will look at that. I just don't think the guy, despite his size, will offer much in the way of blocking. But I think it will be similar to what they tried to do with Wilford. The trifecta likes players that are versatile.

My one concern with Jones is he seems to get beat a lot and that's my concern with him playing FS. Yes he can hit but there are times in coverage where he seems to get lost. Reminds me of Jason Allen a little bit.

Speaking of Jason Allen, I do find it a bit humorous that he's not even in the conversation as FS's when people mention who's on the depth chart, it's Tulver, Clemons, and the rook...

Jason Allen does happen to have more career starts at corner OR safety than all of them combined, and somehow is still on the team with Crowder, Bell, and Brown as the only leftovers from Saban...

J. Allen is as good as gone...they aren't going to pay his money for a special teams player.

Funny how Allen has managed to stay on the team this long. I guess his play on special teams has saved him.

Funny how he stayed on this team longer than Ginn

Well, how has J Allen lasted this long? He's GOT to have intangibles that have saved his butt...Personally, I don't think the kid ever got a fair shake.

Correction, I believe Carey was drafted by Saban too...

Guess Saban wasn't as bad as we thought. He has more players left on the team than Cam-2(Fields, Camirillo)

and 4 starters (Bell, Carey, Brown, Crowder)

Roth could have stayed on as well...

Does anybody know what jersey # Brandon Marshall is gonna wear??it's my sons Bday in 3 weeks and that's what he wants as a gift. Can anybody help a dad out?

I'd check the Dolphin's Pro Shop...My guess is they already have 'em...or not

He's listed as 0 with the rookies. Dansby is #58 however. Mandy, do some diligence. I smell a conspiracy!

I'm callin' it. Bess is gone!

adalius is a no brainer----32 for a pss rusher isnt old, and its situational --MANDO---we need a veteran at the position---this is the reason we didnt sign JT--they knew adalius was goin to be released--i said it 2 months ago

Jason allen is gone b/c of salary--he has talent tho--i hope we trade him 4 a pick, and not just waive him---if we can get a pick 4 travis daniels, we can get a pick for jason allen

Atogwe or sharper interesting debate---i need to learn more about atogwe--i know he makes splash plays, but he might be a guy who makes a play and then gets beat---jury out

He will be more expensive then sharper and the financials could play a part in the guy we go after---IREland never tells truth

He says he isnt worried about FS yet he made a reach which was desperate for ryan clark---they DEF WANT A VET AT FS----

Greg ellis, Adalius thomas, Derrick burges, osi trade------a Vet will be added----

sharper or atogwe ---a VET will be added--

If we address these 2 positions i think our roster is ready to compete for division and in playoffs

NYScott deserves to be nominated for postmaster of the day.You guys should try to be positive about our draft picks until it's been proven that they are not worthy.I don't always agree with the decisions that the trifecta make, but you should let things play out before you get your panties in a bunch. If we start the season 0-3,then you can show a little angst. If we finish last in the division, then by all means go postal.

Marc , carey was drafted by speilman in that infamous trade up and giving away a 4rth round pick when he could've got carey anyway . Speilman also could've drafted wilfork instead,

Bess isn't going anywhere... lol

I don't even know what the word " angst " means but I saw it on the Internet once,so I'm sure it means something.

angst means( be ware ) .

'Bess is gone!'........where are you getting that from? Wouldn't you have thought that they would have drafted or added someone if Bess was gone.

I do agree with you on Allen though, Mark. Not sure why he's never had a fair shake. I'm guessing it's because he wasn't their guy or maybe his work ethic isn't up to snuff. This guy should have become a star in this league. He has all the physical tools you would want in a player.

Yeah, I'm not sure what that "Bess is gone" line was all about. We already lost the best slot receiver in the league, I really doubt we lose another one. Bess has done nothing but create magic in his two years. I expect him to be around for a long, long time.

We don't need A. Thomas. Cam Wake is going to be much better than Thomas, no need to pull him off the field in pass rush situations. Thomas cannot play SOLB which is the position of need (arguably if Misi doesn't work out there). If we are going to go a FA it should be Sharper or Atowgwe.

Tim Tebow is the most talkes about white bronco since OJ Simpson. I like the draft, nothing flashy at all but it seems solid. We shouldnt miss at LB with as many as we took.

Craig...according to whom did J. Allen have the tools...please...the guy has failed under two Dolphin managements...didn't get a chance, what bunk...didn't he have the same chance as any other player to prove on the field...isn't that where player's prove their worth? If he showed he was the best safety...or even corner, I would hope that the Dolphins would play him...obviously he has only shown he's a decent special teamer...and you don't pay special teamers first round money...ask Ginn LOL.

I'm still not sure we're going to get enough production from the WR and TE positions. Maybe this is something they will address next season. We also have to remember we will have to draft a RB next season. It's obvious that the trifecta is happy with the way BRown is progressing as we didn't take a RB in this draft and will address next off-season.

you have writing great posts lately .

Adalius was called the defensive flash by mike nolan---u can line him up at weak, strong, inside, he can cover all over the field---from a pass rush standpoint JT might be better---but his overall skills condsidering his abilty to cover and play all 4 positions in 3-4 and his age---32--

I think he is at least a stop gap guy--for 1 or maybe 2 years----

Atogwe im on board but i think with atogwe its about his contract---drafting odrick at 28 helped his chances tho---b/c none of our draft picks will make a lot of money--opens the door to be more active in FA

I keep reading about Atogwe... He`s not a free agent and for the next month St Louis get to decide if they want to keep him. All they have to do is give him a market value offer. Probably 6.5 to 7 mill over 5 years with 20 mill guaranteed and he`ll stay put. Sharper is a free agent. And he`s not under the illusion that he`ll get a contract like that. He may get a deal like Jason Taylor did. But no more.

Wow, the natives are getting restless. I think it's great that people are not only doubting the Trifecta, they're actually trashing THEM and their draft. I don't like BLIND followers and I think it makes this blog more...let me say..."colorful".
We should of got Kindle, why didn't we get Williams, Starks can't play the nose, wah wah wahine.
That's cool and I can understand. I wouldn't call anyone a jet fan(yes I would) but I do suspect that you're as uninformed as I am.
Think about it. Parcell's goes and gets a defensive coordinator that's considered to be one of the best. The guy obviously weighs in on a draft that we all know is going to be defense oriented.
Yet the know it all, non-jet fans are going to sit at their computers and tell the rest of us how bad and inept Parcell's, Ireland, and Nolan did in the draft.

Oh please all ye nay sayers, how can I follow thee on tweeter. I don't wanna miss a THANG!

"defensive slash"

Allen was well thought of coming out of College. Saban knew him from his college days and it was regarded as a good pick. Like him or hate him, Jason Allen has good physical skills. He should have been a stalwart on this team for years to come. I don't think they did him any favours moving him around from corner to safety and back and forth. I also don't think three different regimes helped this situation. Knock him all you want but the guy has good psychical skills.

Actually Jason Allen has failed under 3 administrations, but who's counting???

(Saban, Cameron, Parcells)

Odinseye...yea...why should we listen to cry babies that say Paarcells is always right...never mind the bad choice in the last defensive Cord....and how about all those free agents that was brought in...how did that work out...all great pick ups. We have nothing to worry about...Parcells is GOD...and God is never wrong. Why worry...Be happy.

Heavy is the head that wears the Crown.

Nice artical Mando. Thanks. In the back of my mind defintley curious how things play out behind closed doors during the draft. Happy to hear, as much as I respect Bill Parcells, that Ireland and Tony have enough power to descent in draft decisions.

Thanks Mark...three eh...where have the years gone by.

Excellent post @ 1:58 ALoco

Fishy Pete,

Shut up you jet fam!

So Fishy,

Just so I'm clear, are you saying that there's no such thing as politics in sports? Are you saying that part of the reason that JT isn't back with us this year has nothing to do with the fact that he rub Parcells the wrong way? Didn't JT prove himself on the field? Don't kid yourself....just as there's politics in the business world, there's politics in sports too. Jason Allen isn't the trifecta's kind of guy and h's never been given a proper chance to show what he can do. Doesn't matter any more, there's lots of guys who have passed him on the depth chart.

He deliberately misled. It had nothing to do with how people mistook it. He knew exactly how people would take it. That's why he said it that way. But if what he said is true, why cut him? Why not let him win a spot at whatever position he thinks IS right for "the kid", if he truly beloved Wilson will be a "good player" someday? Armando, don't be intimidated by this guy! Take him to task, ask the tough questions, and if he gets peaved, so frickin what? Then you expose his poor public relations skills that he is gloating about.

The Bess gone comment was obviously a joke, because Marshall still doesn't have a #...Geez, calm down

Craig...Get over it...J. Allen sucks...he was over rated from the start...he was coming off an injury...yet the Dolphins selected him just like they did Ginn...by HYPE...not a good process, as far as Taylor goes...he's been going down hill for a couple season's now...just how long can you expect great play from a guy thats over 30 years old and has had injuries that has taken alot out of him...there's a point when you have know when to cut your loses...Parcells did just that.

jason allen we have to agree has played well on special teams but thats it

but he knows hes not worth much so maybe he wont be released he will just restructure his contract for much less

It's not personal...it's just business.

Marc who the hell said Bess will be gone? That is funny.

Jason Allen did very good filling in for injuries at the end of 2009, sadly that and special teams play is not what he was drafted in the first round to do

Just kidding.
I'm just saying these guys know what types of players they want. Their reputations and legacies are in the balance. They will be the ones to live or die by their own decisions.
I'm just the lowly villager that will lead the lynch mob if they loose or sing their praises when they win.
Nobody is perfect and the Trifecta has made their share of mistakes in my opinion. Overall I like what they've done and I like what they're doing.
So.....until thine enemy has struck me down....I shall stand behind my King!

ALL praise Parcell's!!!!

Thomas may have been a defensive slash a few years back but he is not anymore. We would need him to be an SOLB and that is a position he really can't play anymore. His current skill set is more suited for WOLB and that is Wake's job now. I dare say that Wake is currently better at that than Thomas.

Craig, I was just going to write the same thing about Saban and his knowledge of Allen from being a college coach. I remember Armando or someone writing how Saban was fresh out of college and that would give him the advantage at the draft having played against and or attempting to recruit a lot of the players. I agreed 100% and was excited for the draft.

Then with the first pick we take Jason Allen and I'm thinking, 'awesome, Saban is a defensive guy and he's taking a FS with the pick so the kid must be good, 7 year probowler coming our way'. Boy was I wrong and dissapointed and it just goes to show you that #1 No one ever is a sure thing, and#2, Saban SUCKS at identifying and coaching players at the NFL level. What a waste of a 1st round pick.

J Allen did no worse than G Wilson, and the safety before him. I really don't know why he never cracked the starting line up. When he replaced Davis last yr he wasn't terrible. He came in on a few nickle and dime situations and made plays. He's flashed at some point every season...

Odinseye...no problem..just having fun with you. It's a damm if you do, damm if you don't business...the only fun part for fans is to complain about something...especially now when it's slow.

NYScott, I'll have to disagree. He still has 4 starters in the league. That's better than some other GM's...

Marc...the year isn't over yet...LOL

Belicheat has had his share of hits and misses as much as Parcell's has. Belicheat won some SuperBowls.

Just for the record, the Bleacher Report had the Patriots and Ravens targetting Odrick.

The fact that he's pretty much flwon under the radar is the most suprising thing. Few interviews with the kid, few stories about him. (Considering he was a first rounder)

I guess the bleacher report was wrong...didn't both pick before the Dolphins?
