Ted Ginn may not have been a great receiver for the Dolphins. But he was a great person.
The kid was classy in victory and defeat, in good times and bad. And that continues. He just spoke on a conference call and rather than taking any shots at the Dolphins or the fans that gave him a tough time, he stayed classy.
"I wouldn't say it's a sense of relief but it's always good to have a new start," Ginn said of his departure from Miami. "Going out to the 49'ers is going to give me a brand new start. Leaving Miami, you know, I hold no grudges. I don't have no bad feelings about them or anything. It's just my time was up there and now it was time to move on."
Ginn goes to San Francisco for a fifth round pick -- No. 145 in the coming draft. He goes to San Francisco ostensibly to resolve the 49'ers return problems on special teams. But Ginn is not selling himself short.
"I still have hopes of being an elite receiver," he said. "I don't think that I sell off at all. I just believe that special teams is one of the assets I have in my game. I'm just going to come in and do both."
The Dolphins obviously didn't think Ginn will become elite. That and the acquisition of Brandon Marshall made Ginn expendable. But Ginn doesn't accept the Marshall trade ushered him out of town.
"I didn't really know that," Ginn said. "I can't say, "Yeah, when we picked up Brandon Marshall I knew I was gone.' When we got the trade, I was happy. It was another guy coming to the Miami Dolphins. But in the same sense, you know the game, you know the business. You're up for anything."
Ginn said he spoke to San Francisco coach Mike Singletary for the first time today.
"He didn't really tell me how he envisions using me," Ginn said. "He said it was a great situation for me and him. Just get down there and let's get with it."
Ginn was asked if he was surprised the Dolphins gave up on him after three years in the league.
"It's a game, it's a business," Ginn said. "They just wanted a new start. But like I said, it's no bad blood. It's the best decision for both of us and we moved on."

Which I say they will be drinking alot of as they watch him drop passes.

I love the trade. Ginn for a 5th round - are you kidding me? That is worth the inconvenience of his not be a worthy receiver in Miami. We need the return guy. Crabtree is still our #1 with Morgan at #2. Maybe reducing him to a #4 (at best) will light a fire under him so he will compete with Crabtree and Morgan.

So why did SF take a chance on him. As Barry Switzer once said " If Charlse Manson could run a 4.4 40 someone would give him a try out."

HATE THE MOVE FOR A 5TH. MAKES NO SENSE TO ME. PLAYING WITH MARSHALL WOULD HAVE OPENNED UP THE FIELD FOR GINN AND TAKEN THE PRESSURE OFF. UNDERSTAND THE DESIRE TO REGAIN THE 5TH ROUND PICK BUT AT THIS COST, NO THANKS. DEAL SMILEY AND THROW IN A SIXTH TO GET BACK THE 5TH. DON'T LIKE THE TRADE AT ALL. IT WAS EASIER FOR THE TRIO TO DEAL GINN THAN ADMIT WHITE AND TURNER SUCK. I'D RATHER HAVE GINN ON MY 53 MAN ROSTER THAN TURNER. SAD DAY, MAKES SPILLER A MUST HAVE AT 12. DON'T UNDERSTAND CREATING ADDITIONAL HOLES IN THE TEAM. LOVE ADDING DANSBY, RICHIE I AND MARSHALL BUT SIGN JT AND REVERSE THIS MOVE. FOR A 5TH FORGET IT. I'D TAKE GINN ANY DAY FOR A 5TH. SAD DAY IN DOLPHINVILLE.
Posted by: mac1492 | April 16, 2010 at 08:54 PM
Obviously, a 5th for a 1st (what we spent on Ginn) is not a value earned, but the divisiveness Ginn engendered with fans, to my mind was reason enough to have Ted move on.
I wish him success. The jets are celebrating. But not for long.
NJ Phin Fan...way to step up. Truly, the trio played their cards well regarding Marshall and Dansby, truly a first for this team in what seems like centuries.
It also helps to have an owner who will open his wallet, and an NFL year with no cap.
My gosh, I almost want the Marino Dolphins back, a point a minute with Marshall AND Bryant/Spiller, a great TE ala Gonzalez...dreams.
I'm feeling so good, I almost don't care who we draft 1st. Wish we could trade down and get a mid 2nd rounder. Can't have everything.
GO FINS!!
Posted by: IMAWriter | April 16, 2010 at 08:55 PM
For anyone that is complaining that the Dolphins should have kept Ginn through camp and one more season to see how he does, there is no guarantee that he makes it past training camp with all the wr on the roster and then the Dolphins would get nothing for him...
You want to wait and see how he does? We were waiting for him last year for his breakout season, but... dud... How long can you afford to wait with a guy eating up roster space?

Ron,
Great post. very balanced and measured.

I don't like the move but I will trust and support TUNA and TUNA HELPERS because you have to take the good with what i believe is the bad.
I am with a lot of you I feel that Marshal will make every reciever better because they will be more open and i envisioned Bess and Ginn benifitting the most but now....oh well

WE JUST BECAME THE SLOWEST WR TEAM IN THE NFL.
Posted by: JUSTIN CREDIBLE | April 16, 2010 at 09:46 PM
Ginn costs money so I think there is more to this than the draft pick we received
It's not just ginn for a 5th, it's the necessary move after marshal was signed long term
Posted by: Jordi | April 16, 2010 at 09:59 PM
LOL@ Ginn, thinks he can become elite. What the heck else is he to say....that he will be 3rd best. He had plenty of time here to prove it. Last year was to be his breakout year but he stepped backwards. Would have loved to get a 4th round pick, but what the heck.
Justin I dont think they will pick Dez Bryant after getting Marshal..wtf.
Posted by: Ace | April 16, 2010 at 10:05 PM
Justin you say we are now the slowest WR team in the NFL. What were we before Ginn was traded? Also, how was that working for us then?
WTF
Posted by: Ace | April 16, 2010 at 10:12 PM
I have a feeling the speed will come back to us in the form of Clemson's Jacoby Ford and a lot cheaper!

Dear Mr. Salguero
"He didn't really tell me how he envisions using me."
Pygmalion: A Romance in Football (1913) is a play by George Bernard Shaw.
It tells the story of Mike Singletary, a professor of Footballogy who makes a bet with his friend Bill Parcells that he can successfully pass off a Cockney flower Boy, Ted Ginn, as a refined Elite Wide reciever by teaching him how to Catch Pass's with an upper class accent and training him in Manhood.
In the process,Mike Singletary and Ted Ginn grow close, but he ultimately rejects his domineering ways and declares he will marry Freddy Eynsford-Hill – a young, poor, gentleman.
That would be my guess
Soiled :)

i am not a ginn apologist by any means, but did anyone else think that henne was off the mark on a bunch of his deep attempts to ginn last year. i was sooooo excited to see the difference between the chads with the deep passes but i really thought that pennington's accuracy (despite the lack of zip) found the mark more often. besides that bomb over revis, there were more times that henne had ginn open on a fly pattern and didnt hit him. was i not seeing it correctly? thoughts?
Posted by: swedish_phish | April 16, 2010 at 10:27 PM
I'm mostly glad to see Ginn leave because of the horrendous verbal beat downs he recieved here. Although I must admit the drops, alligator arms over the middle, and running to momma Ginn(out of bounds) greatly helped too.
Posted by: DyingBreed | April 16, 2010 at 10:33 PM
I love ginn's skinny hairy balz.
Posted by: DyingBreed | April 16, 2010 at 10:36 PM
This was just freakin stupid. Stupid move. Every opposing team would have their #1 Corner and safety on Marshall every freakin play. There is no #2 corner in the league that stay with Ginn, he would have been wide open on every freakin play. Utterly stupid, like they could possibly get better value out of a fith round pick. ABSOLUTELY FREAKIN STUPID.
Posted by: Kurt In St Pete | April 16, 2010 at 10:37 PM
i think i remember reading somewhere that chad pennington actually has one of the highest completion percentages of passes over 20 yds in the nfl. he was especially good at the seam routes to TE's, which is why i think fasano really dropped off last year (henne could never drop it in there). it seemed like henne mostly chose to throw the 5-10 yd out more than anything and thats why bess, camarillo, and hartline got most of the production in the passing game.

Everyone makes mistakes, Parcells, Opie, and the Penguin need to man up and cut Patty Pygmy White. He can't play QB in the NFL and won't play any other position. I doubt if anyone would give us a pick for him.

I'll never say a bad word about Ginn as a person, but after he turned a long first down into an opposing touchdown again New Orleans (granted, that should have been a fumble/touchback to erase the mistake), I'm glad he's gone. That was, by far, the most painful moment of the 2009 season, and where all hope was lost...
Posted by: Matthew | April 16, 2010 at 11:05 PM
