Ted Ginn Jr. traded to San Francisco

Ted Ginn has told friends and teammates he has been traded to the San Francisco 49ers. The Dolphins are not commenting publicly but I got a text from a team source confirming the trade is done for a 2010 draft pick.

That pick will be a Saturday pick, I am told. That means a late-rounder guys.

[Update: It's a fifth-round pick, No. 145 overall. The Dolphins lacked a fifth-rounder prior to this.]

[Update: The Dolphins now have confirmed the trade is complete although they are declining to confirm the compensation. The 49'ers are also confirming the trade and have confirmed the compensation as their fifth-round pick. Dolphins seem petty to me when they refuse to disclose compensation everyone else discloses.]

Ginn was flying to San Francisco as early as today and take a physical. If he passes, the trade will be official. His primary role in San Francisco will be primarily as a return specialist.

Ginn's fate was sealed by the recent acquisition of Brandon Marshall, but the truth is Ginn has been on the trade block for several weeks.

The former first-round pick in 2007 -- No. 9 overall -- regressed significantly in 2009. He dropped more passes than just about anyone in the NFL. His production also dropped from 56 catches in 2008 to 38 in 2009.

Fellow receiver Brian Hartline told The Herald's David J. Neal that he has a sense the trade was in the works. Ginn and Hartline share the same agent.

"I'm not totally surprised, but I think it's best for Teddy and the organization to do what they're doing," Brian Hartline said moments ago. "You go get a guy with the No. 9 overall pick you expect him to have an immediate impact. I don't think he was ready to make an immediate impact for the Dolphins. I'm not saying he doesn't deserve to be a No. 9 overall pick because we know what kind of playmaker he can be. But he was put in a difficult situation."

This trade comments on what Bill Parcells ultimately thought of Miami's 2007 draft -- the one just prior to his arrival.

The Dolphins have cut or traded every player in that draft except for punter Brandon Fields (7th round) and nose tackle Paul Soliai (4th round).

Last Comment about ginn ever....

Could not catach Herpes in Tijuana!!!

It is not about the pick, it's about the salary dump.

Why does Mell Kiper wear a helmet on TV?

Go Phins!

Anyone who thinks Miami didn't get the best value for Ginn doesn't know football. Ginn stinks and is a "P". He is afraid to get hit and didn't fit the mentality that this team wants. They want to tough and physical. Ginn is soft and runs out of bounds rather then get an extra few yards. If Santonio Holmes went for a 5th even with his off field issues and Miami trades Ginn for same then it's a steal. He would have been cut most likely anway.

Great offseason! I loved how all these fair weather fans blew up the blog when Miami got Marshall. You guys are clowns. For all the guys on here everyday we know who we are.

Nice work on the Eagles trade front scenario Mando!!

But aside from the Eagles 1st rounder The Trifecta should push for the Eagles "first" 2nd rounder, not the second.

Based on the value chart that is a fairer trade. The Eagles would be giving up just 80pts. (37th overall).Versus the Dolphins giving up 110pts. if we took their second 2nd rounder (55th overall).

I think that "their first 2nd rounder" is really key though!

...I'll bet theres a nice little game of chicken going on there.

I figured we would get a 5th rounder for Ted Ginn alone, but for him and his whole family I figured at least a 3rd...

Thank God I will never have to hear another Ginns family joke. Now if we could just get those same jackasses to stop using the "you're drinking the koolaid" line. There's nothing more annoying then hearing people use the same lame jokes over and over again.

And this trade along with the fact that almost the entire 2007 draft is off the team now shows what a complete joke Cam Cameron is. And I was one of the people saying we should give him a chance because he has to know what he's doing. I'll never make that mistake again.

If not for that 2007 draft, if we had even a 50% success rate that year, our team would be in great shape and we might be looking at a possible AFC championship game this season.

I will appreciate Huzienga for a lot of things but in the same sense I'm glad he's gone. He had grown soft and was to loyal to people who were clueless. Can't wait for the draft because this is getting really exciting. I'm loving the moves the team is making.

Did we also traded Ted Ginn's family, or are they still here ?......

maybe we can get a higher pick for them ?

Am I the only one who thinks it is a terrible idea to trade Ronnie???

He is one of the best players we have..

Just because Chris Johnson had a great season last year, does not mean that Spiller will have the same success...

For all you know he could be the next Reggie Bush...

DON'T TRADE RONNIE....

Well, it's bittersweat...I was actually holding out hope. I think he will do well. I wonder how you guys will react when Marshall drops one in the endzone. It has happened...

Who will be our PR/KR? seriously? Bess and Cobbs are terrible

And whoever earlier said "Lex could pick up the slack for Brown"...Are you kidding me? Lex couldn't pick up Brown's nuts!

To hell with all you guys cutting on Ginn!

Ginn was a hard hitter.
Everytime a defensive back got near him, he hit the ground....HARD!

Hey Ted Ginn lovers, check this one out....

We r lucky to get a fifth I figured the only thing people would trade him for was mabey a cheerleader and a 24 pack of corona

At least we'll have no more 4th Qtr potentially-game-winning endzone drops!!!!

And keep Brown!!! Ricky and Ronnie make a great tag team!

Owned Revis?? What did drop another one AGINN do the second time vs Revis. The Jets do matter to Dullfans. You guys summarize Ginn's career acomplishments from 1 catch and two punt returns. HILARIOUS!!!!!!!!

Where is Carlito???, he is probably drunk celebrating hands of stone has moved on

wow I was never crazy about ted ginn, but the fact that you pick him in the 1st round and then trade him for a 5th round pick shows you what he turned out to be.

Schmoo,
Why would you trade Donald Thomas? We are paying the guy a 6th round contract. Quality line depth is hard to find. Even if he sits we aren't paying him squat. If Garner or Incognito got hurt you'd be wishing he was still on the team.

An old bag of chips and flat soda would have been a good deal! We came out ahead.....

Marshall completely would have freed up the other side of the feild for Ginn. Ginn's only routes could have been fly's. With his speed on the outside and Bess in the slot, Defense would have been defensless.

Oh, well...everyone has been saying this had to be a dynamic year for the Fins, and it's turning into one...Ginn has THREE years left on his contract, has already stolen the majority of it and had to give Parcells major heartburn...GONE GONE GONE...he had his 3 years, he didn't make it work...Ted Ginn is officially a Draft Bust...

MANOS DE PIEDRA

Dear Cam Cameron, Ted Gin is NOT ! a Miami Dolphin. Ted Gin was the complete receiver package, oh yeah, execpt for that whole catching the ball thing. Do we get any pick's for the Ginn family ?

Owned Revis?? What did drop another one AGINN do the second time vs Revis. The Jets do matter to Dullfans. You guys summarize Ginn's career acomplishments from 1 catch and two punt returns. HILARIOUS!!!!!!!!

Yes, owned. Did you forget the game at the meadowlands? The TD catch, over Revis? The come back catch of a pennington Duck for 40+ yards? He flew by Revis all the time. It's the only guy he could beat. Don't hate the truth!

Did we get a 5th round in exchange for Ginn? Great deal for the Fins, I would have simply cut him. He's a fast chicken playing football, I'm glad he's gone.

"Marshall completely would have freed up the other side of the feild for Ginn. Ginn's only routes could have been fly's. With his speed on the outside and Bess in the slot, Defense would have been defensless."

Ginn was not going to be on the Field. We will run 2 or 3 WR sets with Marshall, Bess, Hartline and Camarillo. A lot of play action with a RB in the backfield.

Forget Ginnareah

DO NOT TRADE RONNIE BROWN

Oh, and a big time block on Mr. revis on a 3rd & 7 wildcat play which lead to a go ahead TD. Blocked Mr. Revis & his island right out of bounds actually. The one time Ginnzo showed some manhood.

You guys also gotta remember Ginn recieved a 5yr #9 pick level contract. We would have had 2 more seasons to pay on that before even beginning to thing renegotiating. Ginn isnt worth that kind of money.

Besides his up and down play, with the big money acquisitions, there was a NEED to dump his big contract. Not only do we save wasted money we get a 5th rd pick to boot.

The decision to trade Ginn was both a great football and team financial move.

Well the next thing you know ole Teds no longer here.
The Ginn folks say, Ted move away from here.
Said California is the place you outta be.
Now the Miami Dolphins are Ginn family FREE!

Good-bye Teddy!

I just heard a report that Ginn's grandmother will remain with the team as a wedge-buster on special teams.

Keep it going fellas please

There was a comment that ginn was a jet killer, without him we lose both games...well if he would of caught that pass in the endzone vs. Indy we win that one..and if he wouldn't have dropped that 4th down pass on the sideline (I forget which team) Pittsburgh or SD we could have kept the drive alive and maybe did something - more failures than accolades

Spiller might end up as good as Reggie Bush...MIGHT.

If people want that instead of Ronnie Brown then fine, but don't expect the next Chris Johnson.

and we all knew Ginn's time was up. I'm hoping the WR position isn't settled yet. Would like to see someone brought in at the position who can compete for the #2 spot and/or both the return jobs.

Posted by Rob in OC:

We need one speed guy to help keep safties out of the box vs our run game.

"Ditto!"

We need to replace Ginn's speed to stretch the field and keep teams from cheating Brandon Marshalls way. We do have good possesion receivers but speed kills. The only diffrence is we need a speedster that can actually catch. Not just be a decoy.

Oh yeah... and one who doesn't mind getting his uniform dirty.

WOW...Guess we are gonna get another WR... Lets hope..

What a great week for the franchise. We hooked up with Halle Berry and divorced Rosie O Donell and sent her to the 49ers. Now all we need is to hear that Rex Ryan got caught with a male prostitute at Golden Corral and that will be the cherry on top.

I can't believe there are still Ginn apologists out there. "The pressure would've been off of him with Marshall here". WHAT PRESSURE?! We have Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams in the backfield along with three other receivers who can actually catch the ball! And then someone pointed out that Bess had some drops in the beginning. Are you friggin kidding me? He was still near the top of the list in the nfl with passes thrown too as compared to drops. Ginn was at the bottom.

Ginn dropped a ball that hit him in the hands for what would've been a win in Indinapolis. Ginn could not get seperation from DBs unless he was running a go route! Ginn could not make quick cuts to get away from DBs in short yardage situations. Ginn never made a tackler miss after a reception. Ginn routinely ran out of bounds to avoid being hit, three times costing the Dolphins a first down and forcing a three and out. Ginn had a few good games and one or two great games but then would follow that up with piss poor performances meaning he is terribly inconsistent. Ginn was outperformed by Brian Hartline in Harts rookie season! Ginn could not read and react to defensive schemes and was out of place because of it. Ginn was getting schooled IN HIS THIRD YEAR AS A PRO, by a f***ing practice squad CB!!!!!!

Are you people seriously mad this guy is gone?! We signed him as a #9 overall and only got a 5th rnd back. Does that not tell you what the league thinks of him? You're saying that he's going to succeed now because he will have crabtree on the other side of him to take pressure off. Boy are you going to be dissapointed when you see that he will be primarily a kick returner. They will only use him to stretch the field during running plays.

Ginn is gone and this is a very, VERY good thing for this team.

Poor guy has been cursed ever since the Buckeyes jumped on him in the end zone after that opening kickoff return. You remember, the one right before the Gators woke up and strolled to the national championship.

Better luck out west Jr.

"There was a comment that ginn was a jet killer, without him we lose both games...well if he would of caught that pass in the endzone vs. Indy we win that one..and if he wouldn't have dropped that 4th down pass on the sideline (I forget which team) Pittsburgh or SD we could have kept the drive alive and maybe did something - more failures than accolades"

Agreed, I was just relishing in his greatest moments. You forgot to mention the bobble against the Saints which went for a phantom TD.

NY, tell me how you really feel...

dude excellent post. I cant believe the "Ginn will benefit from Marshall routine on here"

Just when I thaught my week couldn't get any better. Wow!! I am a season ticket holder, and I was tired of seeing this jackass dropping balls. Be gone T-Rex!!

The Ginn trade is good for both teams. Ginn was a bust in Miami and doesn't fit on the Dolphins' roster. 5th round picks are almost worthless, so San Fran didn't give up anything valuable. When's the last time the Dolphins hit on a player in the 5th round? The 1990s?

One last request...Keep Thigpen and trade Pennington! Pennington doesnt have the arm strength to throw a 20-30 yard sharp crisp pass these days. We need to continue to evolve into a vertical offense. Pennington would be regressing.

we will regret this! and i'm a michigan fan!! he brought more to the table than people give him credit for. it was foolish to try and make him a #1. should of put him back to return and in the slot. he played a big role in both wins against the jets! two steps forward and one step back!!

***TYPO I meant thought

Now if we can get something for Peppermint Patty White, and move Ronnie Brown now while we still can. I'd take a #3 for Brown and a #5th for Patty or whatever.

NYScott, haven't seen you in a LONG time man...How goes it?

Please vote... Keep Penne or Pigpen?

I vote keep PigPen

Teddy better grow a sack of nuts before facing Coach Singeltary..He forgot that the NFL is not Flag Football.

It would be interesting to see him razzle and dazzle the field if there's no sidelines for him to run out.

He was a J-E-T-S killer last year - thankful for that. Otherwise, good riddance!

"Schmoo, Why would you trade Donald Thomas? We are paying the guy a 6th round contract. Quality line depth is hard to find. Even if he sits we aren't paying him squat. If Garner or Incognito got hurt you'd be wishing he was still on the team."

Why? Draft picks. We need them based on the holes we have this year, the lack of a 2nd next year and major holes creeping next year with RB's. This team turns over OLineman all the time. We have plenty of bodies on the OL, alot of them interchangeable. We signed the guy from the CFL who is supposed to be a stud also.

Thomas, if not starting, can be replaced. But, being that he has played some, he may have some value. I say try to get smething for him. He does not sustain blocks & is not very good in pass protection. If you can get a mid round pick(4-5), take it. Berger, A. Gardner, A. Hartline etc can fill the void.

Phin4Life,

What are you smoking dude?

Thank God he was not traded to the Pats or inside the division. Didn't want my Ginn theory of situation great play maker to work against us.

It had to be done because he didn't produce and we have too many WR it just sucks that Marshall will open up the field for his blazing speed and we will not get to see that. But we will be a great offense none the less.

On a draft note:
Since it looks like we are trading down with Eagles to get into the 2nd round, a great draft scenerio would be:
1st round - Pierre (or best Pass Rusher available)
2nd - NT Cody
3rd - S Rolle
4th Round - Best OLB avail.
And
Re-sign Taylor and pick up OJ or Sharper

If we do that we are ready to ROLL!!!!!

I hate to trade Ronnie Brown too - BUT...for the right price, I would get rid of him, and absolutely draft CJ Spiller. This guy is a BEAST and a TD machine. 40+ TD runs are his specialty and can turn 5 yrd screen passes into long TD's!

Like the way this offseason is shaping up.

hes only three years old,i think he should have been worth more.maybe we can pick up the ex um tight end in the fifth.no more late round wr we have enough projects already.

he is our best deep threat. u can't teach speed now we have to waste a pick on a speed wr

Waterboy,

I'd keep PigPen

Guess this solves the jersey problem too. 19 is available.

Mando, any updates on what type of compensation we will get for his family?

You are correct, I did not remember. In dropped another AGINN's career, two catches vs Revis = ownership. hahahahahaha.
