Dolphins minicamp wraps up this afternoon

Minicamp is over. The offense didn't look like it's ready for the season quite yet. The defense looks better.

During today's morning practice the offense:

Saw a bad shotgun snap from Jake Grove to Chad Henne that had Henne diving on the ball in the backfield.

Had confusion among first-teamers in the Wildcat formation, causing Henne to call time out.

Had a fumble by the halfback in the Wildcat run by the second team.

Had Joey Haynos catch a pass and promptly let it slip around his hip and behind his back and plucked out of the air by the pleasantly suprirsed defender.

Koa Misi got all the snap with the first-team defense today and that is the third consecutive day that happened. John Jerry got all the first-team snaps at LG with the starting offense, and then got some third-team snaps there as well, which if you ask me, is a great way to get a rookie up to speed faster.

"The more reps (Misi) gets here against Jake Long and those type of people the less guess we're going to have down the road when we're closer to playing him but we still haven't seen him against that caliber player," Coach Tony Sparano said. "He's competing every day against the first group right now so from our standpoint it's taking the gray area out of the projection down the road.

Karlos Dansby talked to the media today and one of the topics, believe it or not, is his size 16 shoes. I saw them up close. They are boat-like.

"It's all about my insoles, man," Dansby kidded. "It stretches the shoe about another inch-and-a-half. I really wear about a 14 1/2 but with the insoles in them it stretches the shoe out."

The shoes have become something of a topic in the Miami locker room.

"Not only the coaches but the players," Dansby said. "They said they want to ride the boats. They talk about water skis. All that kind of stuff. During running drills Channing [Crowder} has been giving me hell about it. But that's cool."

Sparano is obviously pleased with the minicamp.

"I love the energy and attitude of this team," he said.

The Dolphins will continue installing the offense and defense in an OTA session Tuesday. I asked Sparano how Brandon Marshall, who isn't getting any snaps while he recovers from hip surgery, is learning the system.

Sparano said Marhsall stands by offensive quality control coach Steve Bush during practice and Bush quizzes the receiver on what he is supposed to be doing on each play. Sparano said Marshall is also tested on his assignments in meetings.

Sparano reports he is very pleased with the work Randy Starks has put in as the team's new starting nose tackle, calling him a "tough guy to block."

Starks has a good combination of speed and strength that allows him to shoot gaps and as well hold the point and that has become obvious to coaches -- even in this camp with no real contact.

I'm writing a column for tomorrow's Miami Herald on Jake Long. I asked Sparano about him and he said Long has gained six pounds this offseason while dropping body fat. So that would make him around 317 pounds now. Scary thought.

Dolphins offensive coordinator Dan Henning spent about five minutes schooling some reporters about the X, Y, and Z receivers and their duties.

The more interesting part of the conversation to me was Henning explaining why he has to plan for winning while not necessarily doing it with his best players.

"With what goes on in the National Football League today and the ability we have with technology to study opponents and do much more in-depth film or video tape work, these defensive coordinators have become more and more flexible in what they do with people in schemes," Henning said.

"I don't think you can just go into a game and say, 'Because we have these players, we're going to do this and you can't stop us.' I don't believe you can do that. I believe if you have one or two good players, when you play a guy like Belichick or Rex Ryan, they can find a way to take those guys away and say, 'What else you got?'

"So you have to be creative no matter what you have. And the fact we have added a guy into the higher echelon of our receiver corps who brings us not only ability, experience, but height, weight, speed, hands and toughness, I don't know, its nicer to have a guy with that kind of ability."

Henning also said quarterback Chad Henne, getting most of the work in practice this year as opposed to last year, is getting that time with the better offensive players on the team.

"I see him because of that, he's much more efficient," Henning said. "He's growing faster and to a higher degree than he would have been last year."

One last thing: Yesterday I told you about Jon Amaya's interception streak. His name was apparently misspelled because it was spelled as Jonathan by the Dolphins on their roster and website. That was changed today and corrected to Jonathon.

We have to beat the jets and the pats at home if we have a chance. And I think we will. Just like last year. So I think we start 3-1. We lose a close game in minnesota week 2. But we beat buffalo on the road the first game and beat the Jets and the Pats on monday and sunday nights at home

In your dream you going to beat the new england .Brady is still your daddy .

I see Pat White getting cut.

Pat WHhite will not be cut for one reason, he's in his second year ,the guy needs a chance .

The the most underrated player move this offseason, was signing Chad Pennington. Having Pennigton around as a mentor for Chad Henne should help accelerate the young Qb's progress quicker then if he was in a battle for the #1 spot, or if it was just Thigpen, and White in camp. Pennington knows that his role here is to help Henne learn how to be a professional, how to study, and how to be a leader(and compete for the #2). He is the type of player that will put his ego aside, and do what is best to help his team win. The orginization is lucky to have him

Sorry i should wrote, GoPATS

DarrlDunphy, I thought henne doesn't need any mentor any more ,he's on his own and able to be no 1 for long time to come .

iI think Pennington is history . the fins look for henne to cement his position as no 1 and pat white as no 2 .

Pat White needs to show this regime something this year, or he'll be gone just like Teddy Ginn. The FO gives you three years to show whatyou've got or you're history. Either step up to the plate or buy a bus ticket. If Henne goes down this season, CP10 is there to help us get to the playoffs. Thigpen's trade bait. Crowder doesn't have Zack Thomas telling him what to do /where to line up and looks lost. He's on his way out unless he impresses soon. FO still contemplating bringing in a free-agent FS. Waiting to see what happens after June 1st. Go Fins!

Tracy you buffoon. who is CP10? Is he related to C3PO?? WTF

I didn't get to offer my two cents in regards to Pat White in the other blog, so I will here. When a starting QB gets hurt, and it is apparent he will have to come off the field, what is the very next thing you see? Every time, the answer is the backup QB grabs the football and begins to warmup. Why? Because he has been sitting on the bench and needs to loosen his arm up. Now, if the guy coming in the game needs to have the element of surprise on his side, and can not warm up without tipping the hand he is coming in, this makes it more tricky. Oat White could not warm up, without sending a major message to the oponent of what was coming.

Also, college-spread and pro-style offenses are MILES apart. The level of competition and speed of the game from college to the pros is GALAXIES apart. People lose sight of the role that mechanics that go into 3, 5, and 7-step drops, which are not used hardly ever in college-spread.

All of this are things that would make it amazingly difficult for anyone to succeed right away. The guy has the god-given ability, it is only a matter if he can tap into it, and maybe even more difficult, if he gets the chance. People make fun of the hit against PIT, well if you watch the highlight, he gets his feet tripped from underneath him, and loses all control of bracing himself. The guy is no Ted Ginn, he doesn't play as his frame would suggest. I think that White is a great kid, and a winner (which does mean something) and will put in the time and effort.

The play-calling was atrocious for White in the PIT game as well, the formula for helping a young QB is quite simple, and it was as if Henning was doing reverse psychology. Run on first, run on second, now pass in an obvious situation on third. Happened three series in a row, and by the time he took off on the 4th third down (the hit) you could see he wasn't confident.

I can't help but wonder if he hits Ginn in the Atlanta game, how his season may have turned out. You saw the confidence he played with against NE after the long run, he perfectly executed the option on the TD run for Williams a few plays later. I may be in the complete minority, but I saw quite a few glimpses that I liked last year.

All that being said, barring a trade, or us keeping 4 QBs, he should NOT have a roster spot over Thigpen or Pennington.

Ocean will recover, just like it did with the last big oil spill. That's all I got to say about that. Now let's talk football lol

Bootang25:

I think when the Dolphins drafted Pat White we all pictured this athletic dangerous guy who can throw the ball from anywhere on the field.

Its safe to say that, last year, there was no resemblance.

Drafting egos aside -

For Pat White to stay on the team he needs to show that he can be
' That Guy. '
.
.

Bootang25- Great Post. I'll add to the point about spread Qb's making the adjustment to Pro offenses. Like you said most don't have to learn 5 step drops, or the make the passes that a Qb would make in a 7 yd drop( deep outs comebacks, corner routes) They don't have to pass from a pocket because most of the time, out of the spread, the ball is released quickly, and if the play breaks down, boom they are gone. Also they have to learn to make more progresions, as the routes take time to develop. finally the touch, and accuracy demanded is much more difficult because the passes are longer(in 5 step routes). In Whites case, he was recruited to play in WV's system. He was brilliant there, and obviously good enough that the Phins thought they saw potential,. Hopefully he can continue to develop.

Dolphins should pickup Lendale White, even though he likely faces suspension, they need a tough RB like him to go along with Williams.... Ronnie Brown is damaged goods!!.....

Steve-oh...what about all the fisherman that have lost their livelihoods for the next 5 to 10 years.. thats what higher taxes and welfare is for right.. and no Alaska never recovered. 20 years later if you take a shovel to their beaches get what you find under the sand... yup 20 yea old oil... move along nothing to see here right.. go talk football now you fool.

that's a great benefit to have in a defensive standpoint. competing againist the best left tackle in the league will surely speed up the learning process for Misi.

Thanks for the Jake long artical, Mando.

GO DOLPHINS!!!

Who on our roster wears the number 10?
Chad Pennington! Hence, CP10. As you'll notice, I was talkin about QBs (that stands for Quarterbacks).
Any more names you'd like to call me in order to show your ignorance?

Tracy474 it was a joke about C3PO you putz. I second the other guys motion for your death. hahahahahahahah

Hey Home,

Whats up with your boy Patrick Turner. He's gonna beat out Brandon for the 1WR spot right?

Oh yeah, Sean Smith really sucks. Only started all 16 games as a rookie. Yep uh huh, you predicted that from the beginning of training camp riiiight?

You suck dude. STFU

Maybe Pat White can pitch the "putting the glove back on" as a tribute to Michael Jackson? ;)

I mean if most of us saw it was bugging him not to have it then why can't mgmt? I mean if the glove is simply a superstitious or psychological crutch then let the man have his glove.

I know I used to be very particular about my fav cleats, pads etc. I always felt faster and better when I was 100% behind the gear I was wearing.

Free Pat White!

To steal a bastardized line from the O.J. trial : "If the glove is a hit you must not pitch a fit"... Coach S. Let the young man wear it until he gets equally crappy results in game.

Cheers,
