Smith guarantees he won't be shut out in 2010

As you may already know, my column in The Herald today shares the feelings the Dolphins have about all the moves and boasts the New York Jets have made this offseason. I talked with cornerback Sean Smith to gather information for the column and I wish to share here some of the material about Smith I didn't use in the column.

Smith, who started all 16 games at cornerback as a rookie, is locked in a competition with Will Allen and Vontae Davis -- three men wanting two starting jobs. My opinion is Davis is going to win one of those jobs and it will fall to Allen or Smith to decide the other.

So what does Smith think of how he did in his rookie season with hindsight giving him clearer vision of 2009?

"I think I did some real good things out there," he said. "I don't think there was a game where I was getting my butt whipped all game. I would say there wasn't any receiver that had my number for a whole game. I think my coverage was solid for the most part. Even though I didn't have any interceptions, I'd say my play was above average for a rookie."

The zero interception statistic is obviously one Smith isn't thrilled about. He says, indeed, guarantees that number will change in 2010.

"I guarantee that will change this year," he said. "Guaranteed. No way I will go another year without an interception. It's impossible."

Smith might have thought he was going to be an interception machine after collecting two in the 2009 preseason. But the real games are different and the higher stakes obviously affected Smith's coverage plans.

"The first year I moved to corner from wide receiver, I had four [interceptions]," Smith said. "So I was like, 'It's not really that hard, I don't see how guys struggle.' Next year I had five. Then I had two in the preseason and I thought, 'We'll keep rolling.' But then you get in the game when it really counts and you don't want to be that guy that messes up.

"At times I was being a little bit too hesitant. And we were in some close, close games and if I gamble one time and I get beat, I'm like, 'No way. I'm not bearing that on my shoulder.' You can't play like that."

So how far does Smith believe he's come one year into his career?

"I'm a lot more comfortable," he said. "I'm talking out there. I'm more vocal. I'm able to disguise things. I'm able to feel like a real vet, you know what I mean? I got the rookies asking me things. It's good to give advice instead of asking all the time."

Smith is also being smarter about his body and training regimen. Last year, he'd eat fast food and not concern himself with massages or icing down. Now he's eating more vegetables and fruits and staying away from fast food.

He hopes that will help him avoid the letdown he felt the final five or six games of last year when he felt somewhat worn down.

"I seen guys getting ice the first couple of weeks and I figured, 'I'm fresh I'm good,' " Smith said. "But after a while I had to take their advice. It was tough but I got through it.

"As the year went on I started to get the feel for body language of the receivers, learning how he lifts when he's going to break down. When you're watching things from the side you can tell when he's going to stop but when you're watching things from dead on its harder to tell when he's going to (drop) the hips."

It should be an interesting competition at cornerback.

Dansby has done nothing as a Dolphin and deserves to speak for our team? And last seasons rookie starting cornerback should shut up?You lost me on that one.

I don't think anyone on last years defense is bragging about last season.

What happened to BobbyD12?

WHO cares, it is peaceful w/o that fool.

I have 2 agree with home on this one... Why did they draft another cb this year with so many other glaring holes? Apparently one of the trifecta doesn't have faith in one of our corners and I see smith as the weak link of the 3... Although I don't know enough about cb Nolan to count him in the top 3 yet!

Dansby Will Be A Miami Dolphin Defensive Captain

DAnsby is got to be the captain unless he fail to produce ,we will see how it goes .who's the offense captain ?

henne or marshall ?

Sammy, gotta side with Home on this one. Dansby is the defensive Brandon Marshall. Marshall will become the best offensive player on the team (right now held by Ronnie/Ricky/possibly Long) and Dansby will be the best defensive player. That's why they were brought here, that's what they did previous to coming here, that's what you'll soon see in 2010.

Mando, what happened to the Sparano presser?

CB Nolan is a rook and will need work

HOW SMITH SAYING HE DIDN'T GET WIPED THE WHOLE GAME ? HE GOT WIPED GOOD IN 3 GAMES WE WERE UP BY 20 PLUS POINTS .

THE COACH GOT WIPPED ALSO BY NOT BEING ABLE TO TAKE HIS TEAM TO THE PLAYOFFS .

THE ONLY PLAYER WHO DID HIS JOB LAST YEAR WAS CHAD HENNE .

Well, ALoco, Henne wasn't the ONLY one. Ted Ginn, Jr. did his job too. I prayed before last season that he'd play so bad that he'd get booted after the season, and he did his job magnificently!

Good To See

Starting guards in the morning were rookie John Jerry (LG) and Richie Incognito (RG)

In the afternoon, the starters were Cory Procter (LG) and Donald Thomas (RG).

Who played better Home, Incognito or Thomas?

Yea Teddy tryed as hard as he could every play to not be hit.. Pleeze what a mistake that was and I feel for San Fran... Now he's their headache.

Clemons Had An INT in the morning practice

and just missed another one in the afternoon

Home,

You're completely off your rocker on Sean Smith. Well I mean you're completely off your rocker in general, but especially when it comes to Sean Smith.

Smith had a bad camp in 2009? Duh, I believe that was first taste of NFL level competition.

He actually picked it up pretty quick. So much so that opposing QB's(NFL QB's HOME) went after Davis more than Smith.

He got ringing endorsement from coaches and fellow players all year. Drew Brees said he had the best coverage he'd faced up to that point.

I don't know what you're problem is with Smith, but it's even more far fetched than your problems with HAARP RAYS.

Your assessment seems to ignore the facts, so I'll go with NFL coaches and SuperBowl winning QB's opinion on this one.

GreatDane,

The reason we're still drafting DB's is two fold.

The NFL is a passing league now. We also have one of the best QB and WR tandems in our division in Brady and Moss. We have to play against alot more spread formations.

The other reason has nothing to do with Smith not being good enough. You can't listen to everything Holmes says.......ah.......well , never mind on that one.

Will Allen is getting real old quick and coming off a serious injury. This should be obvious to a lot of Phin Fans. He will be our nickle this year, but we have to find his replacement this year or next at the latest.

The other reason we keep looking for DB's, and this ones my favorite, is some of Nolan's blitz packages. Nolan likes to use 5 and 6 defensive backs in a lot of his schemes.

CostaNostraHomus blew this prediction. Home don't think I'm not keeping track of you're predictions. Since you've been banned from the Sentinel I recorded them all. So far you haven't hit on any.

Brian hartline was doing people in last year like I was watching all his pLays and easily I mean easily if Chad henne had been accurate hartline could of gotten 6 or 7 plays of 20 or more yards , I'm excited about this kid , may not Bethesda fastest but he knows where he going and when he get their he makes the catch , tough scrappy kid everything Ted ginn is not

I saw Hartline take some monster shots.

Not only did he make the catches, he held on to them and bounced right back up.

Hartline, blazing speed or not, is already better than Ginn will ever be.

Yo HOME, just out of curiosity, why do you hate Sean Smith so much but seem to have a man crush on CLemons when he played MUCH MUCH WORSE than Smith last year in the limited playing time he had ? It just doesn't make much sense....I'm inclined to believe you don't know what you are talking about half the time.

ALERT, every one should go to QVC to watch beautiful women from italy.
it's a live show .

harline will be out of this world this year.speed AND HEART .

i disagree i love the orange uniforms there 3-0

HOME, The hughest paid linebacker "for a Reason" Shouldn't be fighting for a spot in the probowl. Some of you guys are too funny.Already on the free agent's JOCK.I bet you guys were big Gibril Wilson fans before he took the field as a dolphin.I for one prefer to see them play as Dolphins before I crown thier A$$.I want them to rip it up this year but I'm not crazy enough to call newcomers team captains until they provr themselves worthy of the title.Maybe JaMarcus the highest paid rookie QB will be a team captain for you cheerleaders.

Home ,read my question again and try to answer it.We were never debating team captain status. You were attacking Sean Smith and saying he doesn't deserve a speaking role on this team. You said that because of his interview which was the topic we are supposed to be blogging about.I asked you if you felt a player that hasn't taken one regular season snap as a Phin has more of a right to do interviews than a second year stater from a year ago.You answered without answering(like our president)that Dansby will be team captain and can afford the finer things in life but you never answered the question.

Grreatdane. It is you right to agree with whoever you'd like.I don't try to read to much into why we drafted who.I don't pretend to know what is in the head of our coaches. All I know is that Sean Smith had a respectable year as a rookie corner. There is always room for improvement. If we were in need of a new starting corner I suspect we would have drafted him earlier though.

Also, that "corner" we drafted is a DB.He can play safety as well as cornerback.
