HOF voter: Thomas merits consideration

The question that will come up now as a fun exercize and in five years as serious business is whether Zach Thomas merits Hall of Fame consideration and ultimately will get into the Hall of Fame.

Thomas, 36, will officially retire from football today at a 4 p.m. press conference at Dolphins camp. As I reported this morning, he will sign a ceremonial contract with the Dolphins to retire as a Dolphin. In five years he will become eligible for HOF consideration.

So does his 12 seasons with the Dolphins merit consideration?

"Oh boy ... It's a hard question because there are so many good middle linebackers," The Miami Herald's Edwin Pope told me a while ago. Pope is the South Florida representative in the Hall of Fame voting so he not only gets a vote, but would present the case for Thomas in five years.

"Yeah, I think he's worthy of consideration," Pope continued. "And I think someday he'll be getting it. His body of work is certainly deserving. Smart, aggressive, great team player, great locker room presence. He measures up in every respect except height and that didn't seem to hold him back."

There are currently 19 linebackers in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. The Dolphins already have one HOF linebacker in Nick Buoniconti.

The greatest inside or middle linebackers? Dick Butkus. Jack Lambert. Mike Singletary. (Sorry, I never saw Ray Nitschke play but he was voted the NFL's greatest linebacker of all time in 1969. There's been 41 years of great linebackers since.)

Butkus had 22 career interceptions with none returned for touchdowns. Thomas, by comparison, had 17 career interceptions with the Dolphins with four returned for touchdowns. The four TDs tied him for fourth with other linebackers behind Jack Pardee (5) and Bobby Bell and Derrick Brooks (6).

Thomas recorded 1,202 career solo tackles during his dozen seasons in Miami. Singletary had 885 solo tackles during his 11 seasons in Chicago.

The full list of HOF players is here. You can compare Thomas with the other 19 LBs and decide if he's worthy yourself.

I forgot that Peyton said that, Not just once before a dolphin game either. They asked him in a off season interview. Good catch on that one.

ALoco, I've been buying on the dips and getting hurt. Thankfully, I've also been shorting the whole way to minimize those losses. Just goes to show you that it is wise to be contrarian to a degree but you also always must be riding the wave too!

Home, gold stocks are getting flummoxed too. Unless you mean actual physical gold ....

Where is the f'ing press conference. I've got a blank screen? Can you see it? Is my computer blocking it?

Yes

It's my part time work too. Not good enough at it yet for it to be a full time job. However, the most successful and technically adept trader I know hordes gold bars in safe storage. Take that bit of info for all it's worth.

I will drink a cold beer for Zach.

I have a crap load of indian gold, 22kt I guess, is that more valuable than 14 or 18K or the same?

The same thing happened in the 80's with the precious metals.

Its a shame there aren't too many Zach Thomas clones in the NFL anymore. Cote's article says it all. I hope your boy gets HOF consideration some day.

Zack is the man. He was what was supposed to happen when you were drafted a Dolphin.

Poizen,

Point taken...I will agree that noone in the football world will be saying Marino who, I have to point out that you would be hard pressed to find a football fan (other than a fin fan) who gives a crap about the MARKS BROTHERS. Especially one born after 1985.

In fact I would lead the charge to retire Mark Clayton's number long before Zach Thomas. As it stands they were both very good football players but not HOF, and not number retired worthy.

Poizen, I'm not too sure but I believe that the higher the K the more pure the gold - that's why it's softer.

Welcome to the times of high inflation. It's looming.

I pleasantly disagree but respect your opinion. Hopefully he gets in. If Tippett is in, I think Zach can easily get in.

Yes Pistol
Precious Metals are a hedge on Inflation
Like the 80s

This is a bit different
This is more severe
The euro is now at a 4 1/2 year low
World paper currencies are destined to be worthless
The goal is one currency

Home strongly suggests U hold on to that Indian gold Poizen

U see the precious metals will soon rise to unfathomable levels
Please excuse Silver
Silver is now more of an Industrial metal
and will NOT move in tandem with Gold

Hmmm, I should really get some priced out, seems like a decent time to sell, However, maybe even better to hold onto it. Hell, I don't know... LOL

Poizen,

Its cool to disagree. I come to this blog for the opinions not the news. I go to ESPN for that. You are entiltled to your opinion as am I.

On another note. I woudn't be mad if he got in.

Home, That is slightly disturbing. Can't you talk about rainbows, fairy's and pink bunnies, or futures?

Sorry
Not In The Cards

Mark in Toronto-
So Derrick Thomas doesnt belong in the HOF because he was one-dimensional huh. LOL LOL. So I guess Dan Marino doesnt belong either, because he was one dimensional! He could only pass, and Derrick could only pass-rush.. Derrick Thomas was nightmare for a decade. I dont think there was a LT who ever slept the night before they faced him. He was an absolute beast. One of the best pass rushers in the history of the game... I'm sorry, but that was a dumb statememt

MARK,

GOLD DIDN'T SUFFER YET ,I HAD SHORT GOLD FOR 2 DATS AND I SOLD IT TODAY TO BUY FAZ AT 16 BUCKS TO CLOSE AT 16.94.

ALL HEDGE FUNDS WENT TO CASH IN THE LAST 3 DAYS TO LET THE COMON MAN HOLD THE BAG .

Not a first ballot HOFer, but a HOFer at that!!! Glad Tuna has softened his stance a little with all the bad press.

Depends on what are the qualifiers for the HOF. If stats is one of them, he's got that locked up. What about Pro Bowls? Got that, too. Playoff appearances? Not really. MVPs? Not so much. Championships? Zilch. What about character? You never heard of him misbehaving. Ever. No drugs. No domestic disputes. He even handled the Jason Taylor divorce saga with class. What's left to account for? Public Service. I don't think he has a foundation of any sorts, but I know he did something for Thanksgiving where he gave 100 kids $100 shopping sprees at Publix. Honestly, what it cones down to is when you ask yourself what kind of a linebacker do you wish EVERY linebacker in the NFL was like, is it Joey Porter? No. Is it Lawrence Taylor? Hell no. Is it Ray Lewis? Close. Remember he had that murder thing a few years back. I'd say Zach Thomas. I wish every linebacker in the NFL was like Zach Thomas. A true leader. A competitor. A playmaker. And he never let his success get the best of him.

AZ Phinatic. Just my opinion. Just not a big DT fan. I don't think he was a complete defender.

And if anything was stupid, it was that Dan Marino analogy. Please compare apples to apples. For example - JT was an overall better OLB/DE than DT because of the way he played the run and could cover. Agree or disagree - that would make for a better debate.

That a boy, ALoco, ride the wave. I'm looking for a little bit more to short tomorrow too.

I hold some long positions and most of them are getting the tar beat out of them but one that I hold - NTT has actually increased over the last week. Those crazy japanese telcom companies!!!

There is no doubt in my mind that Zach Thomas will be in the Hall of Fame. If not for his sheer numbers over the 12 years with the Miami Dolphins, then for the sheer heart, determination, and leadership he showed every day in the NFL. He was always considered too small or too slow, but he proved to the masses that size and speed do not necessarily translate into an Elite NFL talent. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to become Elite. To me Zach Thomas exemplifies the charecter that an NFL player elected into the Hall of Fame should have.

MARK , THESE GUYS AT CNBC THEY ALL SHORT THE MARKET THEN THEY TELL YOU BUY ON THE DIP .

ALoco U day trading?

ALoco, you are right. I don't watch those clowns at CNBC. You have to develop your own methodology. Those guys will lead you to the poorhouse.

OH HELL YEAH! You know I'm commenting on this post and the one before it. I am so f***ing pshyched that they're signing Zach for a day so he can retire a Dolphin! Hands down my favorite player of all time.

1."Also, do you think the Dolphins should retire Thomas' number"? ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY, NO DOUBT!
2."Do you think Thomas belong in the ring of fame or honor or whatever the Dolphins call it"? SEE ABOVE ANSWER.
3. "And do you think Thomas is a Hall of Fame prospect"?

I will be shocked and very upset if he doesn't get in. This has nothing to do with him being my favorite player and everything to do with what made Zach a great player and teammate.

The bottom line is Zach was small for the position and still put up better numbers than a lot of "prototypical linebackers". He studied harder than most any other player in the history of the NFL JUST TO GET AN EXTRA EDGE ON GAME DAY. That was pointed out by many people in the know including John Madden. He also played on mediocre teams that never went anywhere due to a consistently crappy offense. Hell yeah Zach deserves the HOF!

Zach's greatest obstacle to getting in the HOF will undoubtedly be the Fin hating dolphin-biased northeast media!

Poizen,

Duh, Zach didn't even announce his official retirement until March.

It's OBVIOUS the Trifecta QUIETYLY takes care of business, still I don't think they could have FORCED Zach into retirement any earlier. Doop Te Do! WAH! Wah wah.....

As far as having my head up Parcell's bum, Nah.
He's is the Commander in Chief, I'm just a good soldier.

If Obama and Bush were running together on the same ticket, I'd vote Parcell's for President.

Awriiiight Miami!

Zack Thomas is one of the best ever. Yes he should be in the hall of fame and thank you Dolphins for letting him retire as a Fin. Retire his jersey number because there will never be another to fill that position like Zack. He was always my favorite player and it was heart breaking to see him leave for Dallas. Good luck Zack your fans miss you!

Zach Thomas is a Hall of Famer. Period.

Favorite Zach Thomas story,,,,I have 100 of them but I will share three of my favorite moments/stories.
1. At a young age Zach gets run over by a truck at the family farm (I believe it was on a farm) and gets up laughing suprising the family members who witnessed what they thought was going to be a serious accident.
2. Zachs first season in the NFL he was a friggin rookie and was busting up plays and making huge hits all over the field. I remember players getting up (very slowly) and looking back at him like "who in the hell is this kid"!? I don't think this was his first season but I remember him absolutely obliterating a New England receiver after a catch. One of the hardest hits I have ever seen!
3. My favorite story. Dolphins Patriots game, Zach is running around before the snap of the ball screaming his head off to the defense. I'm watching and wondering what he's all excited about. The Dolphins win the game and the Pats are shut out if I remember correctly. If anything they had one TD. After the game the media asks Tom Brady what happened and he asks them if they saw #54 out there. He explains that Zach was calling the offensive plays out to his defense while the Pats were leaving the huddle before they even lined up on the ball. That's Zach Thomas and I'll never forget him. Way to go Zach!!!!!

WAIT,,,ONE MORE! My dad has always been a huge Giants fan and didn't know much about the Dolphins players. We watched a Giants Dolphins game together and I asked him if he ever watched Zach play or if he had heard about how good he was. He said no and then busted my chops when they showed him warming up because Zach looked to be a foot shorter than the rest of the players. I said just wait, you will see and then I'll get the last laugh. First play of the game the Giants try a fake handoff right but hand off left to a RB who looks to be in the clear for a long TD run. Every player in the front 7 is fooled and are running right. ZACH THOMAS comes from the right side of the tv screen so fast that he's almost a blur. He destroys the RB for a 2 yard loss and just gets up and runs back to the huddle. No 'look at me world dance' or magic marker pulled from his sock. My dad with his mouth wide open asks me who in the hell was that. With a HUGE smile on my face I say, "Dad,, that was Zach Thomas". My dad says, "I think the Giants are in for a long day". He was right, the Dolphins won behind another double digit tackle day for Zach (which for anyone who watched him play knows that was the norm) and to this day my dad tells that story when explaining who his top two favorite LBs are. His favorite is obviously LT but that could've changed in the past couple of weeks.

To the people saying he never won a superbowl so he shouldn't get in.

TAHT'S EXACTLY WHY HE SHOULD GET IN! Look at all of the talent that surrounded those players and then ask yourself how in the hell Zach put up similar numbers on such mediocre teams. You're just making more of a case for him to be voted in.

That's. And no one better bad mouth Zach in this blog today or I swear to everything that is holy I will find a way to reach through the internet and slap you silly! :)

GREAT POST NYSCOTT, YOU READ AND ENJOY THE STORY NOT LIKE SOME IN HERE THEY JUST WRITE WITHOUT THINKING .

AFTER THAT THREAT FROM NYSCOTT I SAY WHAT DID ZACK WON ? DID HE WIN ANY THING ?

Zach is our "baddest" mofu at linebacker since Bouniconti/Offerdahl. Did I bad enough Zach enough here?

Zach...... HALL OF FAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!No other questions, Thanks for stopping by...........

I'm glad that the FO finally decided to retire one of my favorite Dolphins, Zack Thomas!
That being said, I wonder how much it was a PR move designed to take away some of the sting from the Dez interview.
Zack should be in the hall of fame! He's the one who took JT under his wing when he was just a rookie! He even let him date and marry his sister for crying out loud.
Anyone who thinks that he doesn't deserve the HOF is suspect, in my eyes, of being a true Dolfan! Either you haven't been watching the games or you haven't been paying attention or you're just a closet Jets fan, I guess! IMO

To each their own Phinfan....

In my book you either break all the records Ala Marino/Sanders....or you win SB or at least appear in them.

Greatness is judged by pro bowl appeances

We as fans need to hold ourselves, our players, and the orginization to a higher standard than "better than average"

Dick Butkus is in and he didnt even win a playoff game. The Hall of Fame is about personal numbers not super bowls. People Forget Super Bowls are won by teams not individuals. Zach made everyone around him better, and he was a winner

I agree that this is the best move this offseason! It's so great that they are doing this. Yes, I believe he should be in the Hall of Fame.

Zach was good, and has the statistics to back that up, but I don't see him easily getting into the Hall of Fame, although he may eventually. He wasn't a feared name around the NFL like Ray Lewis, as mentioned in an earlier post. He wasn't the dominant player on the field that the pre-game and post game talkers all talked about. He was kind of a Kenny Anderson, the QB of the Bengals. Good numbers, solid leadership on the field, but not what you would call one of the dominant names of the NFL.

editorial note-- you can delete this part-- exercise has an s at the end, not a z.

I'd have to go wiuth the Rome quote on this one, he's very good not HOF. DIME Mag asked a similar question today, Ben Wallace, HOF?? I feel the same way about him and Zach, No!

http://diaryofatiredblackman.wordpress.com/2010/05/20/its-a-landslide-kobe-vs-lebron/

Zach has more tackles than any linebacker in the HOF!

fyi London fletcher does bring his supporting cast up and he has a super bowl ring from st louis
