Wake "wants more" in second year in Miami

Let's be honest, the stars of the 3-4 defense are usually the outside linebackers and more specifically, the weakside outside linebacker.

Yes, the defense needs great play at cornerback, nose tackle and safety but if the pass-rush is not getting to the quarterback, it is simply going to be a long day for any 3-4 defense. The weakside backer has to be the player collecting the sacks, ending drives, causing fumbles on strip-sacks, sometimes recovering those fumbles, maybe even running for touchdowns off those.

The guy has to be a game-changer.

Think Lawrence Taylor years ago, and more recently Elvis Dumervil, DeMarcus Ware, and for one year at least in 2008, Joey Porter.

As the Dolphins play a 3-4 defense, the men slotted to play outside linebacker must produce in 2010 for the defense to get off the field. And no spotlight is brighter than one currently on Cameron Wake.

Wake seemingly must have a big year in 2010 for the Miami defense to climb from its No. 22 overall rank of a year ago. He must have a monster year if the unit is to be feared.

Why Wake?

Well, he was the up-and-coming pass-rusher that seemed to give the Dolphins the confidence to cut Porter and not re-sign Jason Taylor. After collecting an outstanding 39 sacks in two CFL seasons in 2007 and 2008, Wake had 5 1/2 sacks for Miami in 2009 -- his first year in the NFL.

The NFL numbers came with limited snaps so everyone figures more snaps as a starter this year would translate to more more production. The problem -- admittedly temporary at the moment because it is still only May -- is that Wake isn't currently a first-teamer on the Miami defense.

To the surprise of some, Wake was second-team during the recent OTA session witnessed by the media and it has apparently been that way all offseason. Charlie Anderson and Quentin Moses were the first-team outside backers at that last OTA day. Both Anderson and Moses switched off working strong and weak sides.

Was Wake disappointed he's not running with the starters?

"The coach said right before we went on the field, 'It's a starting point. It's not the finish line,' " he said. "So guys are out there playing and I'm going out there to show what I can do."

But make no mistake, Wake doesn't see himself in the same situational pass-rusher role he filled last year. It is important for him to win a starting job.

"I would say so," he said. "I'm always hungry for more. Everybody wants to do that. But I'm always hungry for more. That's what got me in the situation I am now. It's about not being satisfied. I wasn't satisfied with Canada. I wasn't satisfied where I was last year. I'm not satisfied where I am here. Every day I want more."

To want more, Wake has to show more on run-downs because last year coaches weren't comfortable enough with his run-defense to put him in there on those downs. That, in part, is what Wake has been working on during team OTA periods and should continue working on during the club's minicamp that begins Friday.

"Like I said last year, I'm trying to be a good all-around football player," Wake said. "Obviously I'm working on my pass rush, but there are other things also. We have a new scheme, new coordinator, new coach, so I've been picking their brains."

Wake says he's also been working on his body.

"Bigger, faster, stronger," he said. "That's always the goal. And I've been here all offseason. I didn't go anywhere. I'm working on power and explosion, putting on good body weight and finding out where they want me to be."

One assumes coaches want him to be in a starting job by the time the regular-season rolls around. But for now, Wake has more work to do if he aims to become the playmaker on Miami's 3-4 defense.

1st. Wake up Wake!

Glad to see that Wake stayed all offseason to work on his body, conditioning, and Nolan's new scheme.
With that dedication I can seem him "leaping" to the next level.

I think Sparano has a good idea what he's going to be getting with Wake, and put him on 2nd team in the last OTA on purpose in order to see where they are with Anderson or Moses.

I believe it will be Wakes job to lose and Anderson or Moses will more realistically compete for the strong side with Misi.

I am probably in the minority, but I don't think Wake will be a starter at weakside OLB. I believe him to be what he is, a situational pass rusher. Yes he needs more opportunities, but he would have had more last year had Joey Porter not thrown his hissy fit. Now that he doesn't have to compete for playing time as the primary situational pass rusher, he will get those added snaps. Considering the amount of time our nickel defense will be on the field, Wake not starting spent mean he won't get a chance to make plays, it just means he isn't with the starting lineup at the beginning. I also think we will run some hybrid variation of the 4-3 where Wake will be lined up as a DE.

One interesting thing not mentioned often is Karlos Dansy's ability to slide outside on passing downs, given the better depth we have in the middle. Tony Sparano himself said one of the major reasons they brought in Mike Nolan was given his ability to mold his defense to his players, it afforded them the opportunity to draft the best defensive players available, rather than go for a particular position of need. The scheme versatility of so many of our front 7 guys is what makes me not worry so much.

Wake will make it. He's got all the tools and most importantly, the work ethic to suceed.
He wasn't asked to play the run at all in the CFL so it's something he needs to work on.
When he didn't initially catch on with an NFL team, he had no problems doing what he had to do. He became the best Pass rusher in the CFL and earned a spot on an NFL roster.
Now that he's being asked/expected to play the run as well, he'll do exactly what he has done in the past and that is suceed.

Not that I'm trying to upstage NoxiousHomus or anything........but I predict Wake will look like the most improved player on the Dolphins.

My post came off a little negative towards Wake, and let me clarify it was in no way a slight towards him. Even not being in the starting lineup, I still will be shocked if Wake has less than 10 sacks. If I were a betting man I'd say somewhere around 12-14 sacks. The other great thing with Wake is he plays so low to the ground around the corner (Freeney's the only guy who gets lower) helps Wake force fumbles too, he will be one of the league leaders in forced fumbles this year.

Bootanger,
Glad you redid your previous post. I was just gonna mention how it sounded confusing, or contradictory...lol
I think Nolan is gonna have a ball with Wake like he did with Dumervil.

Getter,

The guy is really a matchup nightmare for offenses to block. He is super fast and explodes off the line, can get underneath you as I already mentioned. And it's rare for a guy with his explosiveness to have the overall strength to simply bull rush you. He is not a one trick pony, he has many ways to get after it. Elvis Dumervil is a great example, his sack numbers are fantastic, but even the most homer of Broncos fans will tell you he is iffy at best against the run. We need Wake to do what he does best, attack the QB. Asking for a whole lot more from him takes away from what he does best. Less snaps means fresher legs come the 4th quarter, that is really what I was getting at.

Bootang,

Watching how low a guy gets coming around the corner is something I always look for in DE/OLB's.
I really started to notice watching Bruce Smith terrorize the NFL way back when. Smith looked like he was defying the laws of physics and that's who Wake has started to remind me of. I know it's a bit(lol)premature to make that comparisson, but he does have the similar physique and technique.

Thing about it is. I figured I'd use a rubber but she kept pulling on it. So it slipped in. And then I just found myself killing it.

Bootang... I can see what you are driving at. And if you are right about Wake, That's okay. I feel one of the reasons Miami went LB crazy in the draft is because they knew they had guys who would need work. I feel Miami will be very productive this season at LB. But I will be honest, until the rookies get a year under their belt and guys like Dansby really settle into this scheme, I am not looking for them to hit elite status or anything near it. Having enough tools in the box will cover our butts until we find and settle on the best ones. If Wake is best served in a situational role, Okay, No big deal, let the man continue to grow and see what happens. If he can deliver as many as 7 to 10 sack in a season, he is well worth having on the team. I honestly believe having a guy like Dansby who can attack the run so well, like Zack did in the past. Will elevate many of these guys play. It will breed confidence "In each others play" not just in their own play. When they start really relying on each other and playing as a unit they will be dangerous to any offensive unit the play against.

what?

Bootang, I see what your getting at, but someone has to be the starter, I still see it as Wakes job to lose...however I agree, or think that with the depth that our FO has been building, that we will see a good amount of rotation at several positions, especially under Nolan's D.
That's what will get us to the promise land :)

Odinseye,

Wake is the typical guy that fits in the super athlete trying to be a football player. Stand him beside Zach Thomas, and you'd have a hard time convincing anyone's eyes that Thomas was the superior player. However, 'athletes' or workout warriors, don't often put in the time needed to become the football player, and Wake has shown a willingness to do just that. You were dead right, he went to Canada with a purpose, to absolutely dominate. That shows a love for the game, and a desire to do whatever it takes. For him, nothing is guaranteed, he knows nothing is promised. That same fear of not being good enough that fueled Zach is what fuels Wake. I believe Wake will be the rare workout warrior who becomes a great football player.

definitely need to get to the QB this coming season. can't let brady, or anybody else, sit back there and have all day to find whatever they want. your right Mando, Wake is definitely key.

i think Nolan be able to unleash wake's potential..

GO DOLPHINS!!!

Wake will be perfect for Nolan's 3-4.

The weakside linebacker is, for all intents and purposes, a DE. His main assignment is penetration and pressure.

Nolans 3-4 weakside linebacker attacks nearly every down. The Mo linebacker reads/reacts and has responsibility for the cut back lane or the flat if it's a play action/pass.

Basically all Wake will be asked to do is have outside containment and get to the QB.

Nolans defensive scheme will make Wake look like a Pro Bowler.

I think that if Wake is not in the starting lineup week 1 in Buffalo, the only ones overreacting about this would be the media and the fans. I don't think Cameron Wake will be that upset about it, as I said he will get a ton of snaps. I liken his role for our defense this year to a slot receiver on offense. Maybe not playing every down, but arguably the most important player on the field when he is.

Odin... I certainly hope you are right. If Wake is able to "put it all together" there is no reason he cannot be on the top shelf as LB go. He has all the tools Speed, quickness and strength. He also has enough technique to get past many of the OT's but may lack the NFL experience and technique to get past the Elite NFL OT's. He is certainly on the right team to improve, he has a great OT to play against in practice in Long. One of the reasons he needs to work hard at hitting first string is playing against Long every snap he can. That is where he will improve most (IMO). I believe the whole thing with Wake will come down to him. How much does he really want to improve. So far so good if ya ask me.

If I had to rate our 53 man lineup in order of who I am least worried about this year, with 1 being no concern whatsoever, Wake would be around 15. The guy is going to raise hell, simple as that. It was easy to neutralize him last year in Pasqualoni's predictable defense. Simply motion the TE to his side, or chip him, slow him just down enough. Nolan will be more creative in his blitz schemes, allowing Wake to attack weak spots in protections.

I really can't see Wake being all that worse then what Porter was last year. JP was stinking it up against the run last year and I felt that Wake was the better rusher. So in my view Wake is a upgrade over Porter but then again I am not paid to make these decisions.

Good points Bootang25. As many have already pointed out in previous blogs, Nolan is going to be the "Difference" in how the defense really does their job. He knows how to squeeze a roster for talent and con truly motivate a player for more then just a game. The good part is most of Miami defense is very young. So getting them to buy into s system will not be as hard as it would should he be walking into a veteran defensive unit. He can take these guys and mold them to his fancy. Should be fun to watch.

Wow, Marshall is really good at avoiding contact, not by running out of bounds like Ginn Ballerina did, but by simply making tacklers miss...or by running over them when needed.

As it was prior to the draft it remains today: we probably have the 27th or so defense in the NFL (without Dansby we would be about 30th).

Wake, Moses, Anderson, Misi, Edds: our starting and reserve outside linebackers will come from that group.

The three stooges did a great job! Again!

Historically fielding .500 teams in the age of parity.

Big Deal!

You have all basically said the same thing over and over and over again as if though you only shared one very limited brain.....

The Jets will eat Wake for breakfast. We will run him over with the best offensive line in all of football, while Jason (JT) laughs on the sideline.

Bow to the new power of the East!!!

Why do I get the feeling our Fish will be in the SB on 2014 @ newyork..... That'll probably be in the middle of our three straight SuperBowls... Yeah I said it,3 straight!

What does loud, rude, crude and low IQ equal? The New Jersey Jets, a team that leaves there state to play in Jersey, and with the 2014th super bowl in Jersey they are more insufferable then usually, at least now its time for them to go to pre-school. Bill

As usual, your daily sewage spew is based on a wholly incorrect premise. You lost me a 'weak side linebacker'.

Check yourself man. The key to a 3-4 is a nose tackle. He may not be the 'star' but thats just code word to tip off that the person knows nothing about football.

And if Wake is a situational pass rusher that comes in and provides pressure and sacks? Will that be the end of the world? Certainly not, it would be great to see an everydown player out of Wake but if it doesn't happen and he is a sackmaster specialist we are still in great shape

I hope what everyone says about Nolan is true because we're going to live or die with this guy.
After years of watching passive read and react defenses here in Miami, I'm ready for a Riverboat Gambler type.
What do we have to lose? Our entire defense consists of 1st and 2nd year players. Baptism by fire. Lets turn up the heat and challenge everyone.
Even if we have an occassional breakdown there won't be many. Our offense will make sure of that. We're going to dominate T.O.P. even more so this year.
One or two int's by Sanchito, a fumble by Brady and it's a wrap.

new jersey meadowlands are known for being the site of large landfills and environmental abuse.

Pollution by sewage and hazardous waste- various types of waste has been dumped in the meadowlands. During WW II, refuse generated by the military were dumped in the meadowlands. After the war, the meadowlands continued to be used for civilian waste disposal as the marshes were seen as not good for anything else.
