Dolphins to sign Charles Grant Thursday

Searching to further protect themselves following the unexpected loss of Phillip Merling to a season-ending Achilles' injury, the Dolphins today will announce the addition of defensive end Charles Grant to the roster.

According to a source, the deal is for two years.

Grant Grant, 31, is 6-3 and 295 pounds. He has played in the 4-3 system all his life, but he is obviously big enough to project as a 3-4 end. He was available after being released by the Saints in March, possibly because he had legal troubles hanging over his head.

Grant, you see, was indicted on charges of involuntary manslaughter stemming from a February 2008 altercation in a bar -- what else? -- in which a pregnant woman was shot to death. Grant initially denied being an instigator or a participant in the incident.

But that changed when the issue went to court. He pleaded no contest to affray, which means fighting. Assistant District Attorney Ron Smith told the Associated Press Grant was fined $1,000 and ordered to pay $20,000 restitution to the Early County Sheriff's Office for his role in the fight.  Grant, who is from Colquitt, Ga., was stabbed in the neck during the fight in nearby Blakely that resulted in the death of 23-year-old Korynda Reed.

Smith said Grant's longtime friend, Laquient Macklin, and Grant's cousin, Marshae Stromer, pleaded guilty to charges of involuntary manslaughter and affray and paid $1,000 fines and were put on two years probation.

Grant played all of last season but missed the Saints' run to the Super Bowl crown because he was placed on injured reserve for the playoffs with a torn triceps.

Grant, a first round pick of the Saints in 2002, was due to be suspende for testing positive for a diuretic. But the NFL delayed the suspension pending the outcome of litigation by other players accused of testing positive for the same diuretic. It is likely Grant could be scrutinized and face league action in connection to the nightclub death as part of the NFL's personal conduct policy.

Look, folks, this player has shown talent in the past. He's still relatively young. But let's face it: He is coming to the Dolphins as a camp body with much, much, much to prove and major clouds hanging over his head.

Plungie nominee of the day :

"TMZ Sports has reported that Rex Ryan and the Jets have just pulled off another shocker: a 4 year deal with the Ebola virus to play defensive end. blablabla"

Plungie alert I tell ya

Regards

Could be worse!

this is Parcels way of winning the recent pizzing match with odricks agent..LOL

I'd have to guess that this pick up is more or less a lets see deal.....looking for a diamond in the rough so to speak...making sure they have enough DE's in the stable and choices to replace Merling....as the competition begins with camp....

I think it's wonderful. All we have to do is get the opposing team to stuff pillow under their jersey in order to look pregnant and our wonderful group of players will rip their heads off. Ricky Williams is starting to look like the model citizen. It's a direct reflection of ownership and management.

what it's really doing, is enforcing the fact we had a miserable draft and a pathetic free agency period. Where oh where is Don Shula.

Omar Kelly of the SunSentinel tweeted that Parcell and Ireland are scouring the Florida Department of Law Enforcement's online criminal database for a safety "with the coverage skills a young Champ Bailey and the mindset of Chemical Ali".
Shoring up the secondary has long been a concern of the Dolphins Tryfecta and it seems as though they're taking a take-no-prisoners approach to resolving the problem. "Forget about receivers hearing footsteps in the secondary. We want them to hear millions crying from the grave."

Wow dude what ya would rather have Camorron back wouldn't you! Ha get you head out of ur arse! The Trifecta has brought this team back from being irrelevant!

Excellent work getting this before the sentinal and post, Mando.

SS Blows!!!!!!!

I don't get it ... I mean, to me the DL is now crowded.

I expect they will do a "Matt Roth project" with one of the defensive linemen and try to turn him into a SOLB.

Mando, who got the athletic ability for such a move?

Armando,

How many players are allowed to be at the TC roster?

What are the dates they trim to 70 something and then 60 and then to the final 54?

Can he tackle?
If so, then put him in.

Character issues? Hopefully he has put the stabbing incident behind him.

Locker room chemistry? Does he play nice with others or will he be a cancer cell that rips the unit apart?

Can't see myself rooting for him to make the team.

Who is the Fins VET leader on Defense without Fergie, JT or Popcorn Porter?

Starks?
Clam Chowder?
Slimonian Solai?
Karlitos Dansby?
Charlie Anderson?
Cam Cam Wake?

I hope someone steps up to the plate

Finheavenblows never ceases to amaze us with his love for....naaahhh nevermind.

Charles Grant was one of the players traded for Ricky Williams way back (well he was one of the 2 1st picks anyway).

This guy was once a dominant pass rusher. Maybe he has something left - worth a shot.

Why is everyone complaining about the shady characters on the team? This strategy worked in the "Longest Yard"

We need Allen Bailey and Matt Bosher next year. Maybe Jacory too.

Go 'canes!

Well fab. He should fit in nicely here. What a bunch of hoodlums. I remember when we could be proud of the team and the quality guys we had back with Shula. Robbie and Shula would never have all these convicts. I guess now it is win at any cost. The only thing is though, we were undefeated with the good guys. I wonder that Parcells thinks- that hoodlums make for an angry, better team? Doubt it. Raiders never did much over the decades with their losers. Jets wont this year either. Sad year for Dolfans to watch our once classy team turn into this.

Another character signing by the Trifecta...LOL

oh ya, finfan23, there was never anyone with legal problems on Shula's teams. Right, Mark Duper?

Or maybe Mark Ingram who watched his son's Heisman Trophy presentation from the Big House could tell you different?

I'm sure Sammie Smith would tell you he was a choir boy too.

23. m morris was a huge coke head.

t o missed his plane to camp.LOL

and many car hops know of Marinos' early years too.

I think you guys are miscasting Grant as an end in our scheme. I think they want him to provide a similar role to Odrick, playing inside on passing downs. People that are still complaining about Starks moving inside are the same ones complaining about this move. What we want from our defensive linemen is different with Mike Nolan as the Coordinator.

On passing downs, we can use 2 or 3 linemen, maybe a look like Starks, Odrick, and Grant. Remember, our OLBs arent simply good enough, and a way to make up for that is pass rush from the down linemen.

I theorized what our front 7 could look like in passing situations. Grant and Wake as the Ends, Starks and Odrick inside, with Dansby and Misi as the OLB, Edds as the MLB. Highly versatile, athletic front 7 right there.

wow, 2 years probation and a $1000 fine for those other 2...and Grant, $1000 fine too but has to pay for the investigation... mean while there's some young life lost... what the hell is wrong w/people and this f'ing legal system we have here!

so much for not putting up w/thugs. not only do we have them on the team, they are now recruting them. but hey, at the end of the day, its not my money and this is entertainment after all

Nice point Bootang! Charles Grant was a big time playmaker in New Orleans until last year. He could be a nice signing.

NICE POINT BOOTANG,GRANT WAS A BIG TIME PLAYER IN ORLEANS UNTIL LAST YEAR WHEN HE WAS ACCUSED OF STABBING A PREGNANT WOMAN TO DEATH ......

THE FINS, THE PROUD TEAM ONCE WAS . HOW I AM GOING TO CHEER FOR THIS GUY .

Like someone else said, this is a body who will compete in training camp. Everyone wants a winning team and Parcells is going out and getting the guys he feels will do it.

ALoco, I wasn't in that bar and I don't know what happened. Therefore, I can't comment on it. I for one, know that NFL players for the most part are very shady characters. You can tell just by talking to them. In my time, I've encountered several MLB, NHL, MLS, NBA, and NFL players and by far the scariest of them all are NFL players. They are just made different and you need to be to survive in this game.

And Bobby, don't be surprised if Grant doesn't end up being our 3rd best lineman behind Starks and Langford. This guy is certainly talented and is a far cry from a training camp body.

BOBBYD12,

SOME GUY GOES TO THE GAME W/ HIS SON GOES LIKE THAT

SON...DAD ,WHO'S THIS GUY ?
DAD....THIS GUY WAS INVOLVED IN ...DUI

SON....DAD,WHO THAT GUY?
DAD...THIS GUY WAS INVOLVED IN DRUG USE

SON ...DAD,WH'S THAT GUY ?
DAD....NO THING SON,HE JUST WAS IN BAR WHERE PREGNANT WOMAN WAS STABBED TO DEAT BUT HE HAS A BRIGHT FUTURE .

SON....DAD,WHO'S THAT GUY?
DAD....THIS GUY IS DIFFERENT ,HE JUST HITS WOMEN .

SON....DAD, MY DRINK TASTE STRANGE

DAD, IT'S BECUSE IT'S GOOD FOR YOU .

New blog post is up. See you guys over there.

What Lawrence Taylor wasn't still available? He looked great on Dancing with the Stars and Nutrisystem commericals!!

I really don't think that the Fins have paid nearly enough hooligans to come play on this team yet. After all, if they are going to win the Superbowl, then they will have to do whatever it takes!!

We went from one DE who punched a preganant woman to another DE who was involved when a preganant woman was killed. What next, a DE who is a serial killer of preganant women? Leave it to the "no balls" ownership to put a stop to all of this nonsense.

Charles Grant is a good risk after loosing the female beating DE. Real tough guy that Phillip is. Grant has his legal issues behind him. When someone gets killed in a fight and your stabbed and said by police not to be the instigator; there is little chance that he will be suspended by Goodell. When Grant is playing and not in strip clubs there is much upside for the Dolphins as a pass rusher. Now South Florida has many strip clubs as we all know. However they are not nearly as violent as the ones in Georgia. That is another upside to getting this guy for his much needed skills.

Aloco, son asks dad "Who's that guy" Dad, that is Charles Grant
"Who is that guy?" Dad Ronnie Brown
"Who is that guy?' Dad Brandon Marshall
Any dad who would tell his kid anything else shouldn't be a DAD in the first place.
By the way, and I hate the justice system, but alot of these guys end up with not guilty verdicts and charges dismissed.Innocent until PROVEN guilty is a cornerstone of our society.

Fools at SS:

Happy bday NJ

NJ: why thank you 1-luv
Tim: I love u man,
NJ: you are the best
Tim: Nj you are leader and a GOD

BOBBY TAK YOU MEDICIN

YOU NO FEEL RIGHT

Yadda-yadda-yadda...Give it a break! Ok, so some of our players have made some mistakes and some of them have been in the wrong places at the wrong times. This is Training Camp! We don't know yet who will/will not make the final squad. It's called "Due Diligence"! If there's someone available who may be able to help your team, you need to bring them in for a look. Since we weren't at the bar when this thing went down, we don't know what happened. He could have been stabbed trying to help the poor woman. And, what's a pregnant woman doing in a rough bar anyways? Also, the other guys involved say that he had nothing to do with the whole thing. And, they only got a slap on the wrist by the judge who apparently is coming down a little hard on a guy who got stabbed because he's an NFLk player and has a dollar or two. Now, I don't condone having criminals on the team, but people do deserve second chances and a shot at starting over in life. If he turns out to be a great player, I'm gonna laugh at all of you who jump on the "I always thought he'd be good" bandwagon!

Looks to me like the Fins are not all that confident in Odrick as a year 1 contributor.

Or in Tony McDaniels.

First Douglas and now Grant.

To answer this question, why are the Fins not signing a veteran OLB and Safety - maybe there just aren't any available, yet. As camp moves forward for all teams that may change.

funny I was thinking a Miami, Dallas super bowl too, but the end result is opposite!!! Dallas to lose the home super bowl!!!

Gotta love the Trifecta. Weed out the players on the short end of their career and the chronically injured ones, being in a bunch of big, strong, fast athletes sprinkled with a lot of leaders, fill every position with an intense competition, and run a ruthless meritocracy. Results so far - complete transformation of personnel and attitude, huge great OL, strong armed young QB with competition for second place, excellent WR and RB corps, aggressive sizeable DL, ability to stop run and cover on LB as well as pass rush, young fast hard-hitting secondary. Man, this will be a great year.

LOL @ Rick...Post of the day...

If the Mike Brown on the FS free agent list is the same Mike Brown that used to play for the Bears, I wouldn't mind having him. He had a nose for the football. The only thing is, he had some injury issues.

"Who is the meanest safety who has killed many people and will drunk drive to practice while smoking fat blunts and pull over to punch a nun? Thats our guy!"

OMG, that comment had me rolling. Sadly that was the same thing I was thinking when I heard the news of our recent pickup.

I've been a Dolphins fan all my life but this has to be the first time we're looking closer to the Miami penal system than an actual football team...

Unrelated to football but related to the comments about "innocent until proven guilty". Just because there isn't "beyond a shadow of a doubt" proof doesn't mean there isn't guilt. Often times, where there's smoke, there's fire. Also, with that line of thought, OJ was found innocent which as you know, he would make a great backup to Ricky and Ronnie.

Yikes.

What is a prego doing in a bar in the 1st place? Doesn't she know thats where the gangsters are?
