Much ado about a Monday afternoon

Tons of stuff going on so let's get it:

Coach Tony Sparano was asked if he envisions getting his No. 4 quarterback into Friday's preseason game against Atlanta. "Do I envision that?" Sparano asked. "No."

Pat White, in case you've not tuned in lately, is Miami's No. 4 quarterback. He didn't play in the preseason opener. He didn't play last week in the second preseason game.

One thing I can tell you for sure: He's not being showcased to be traded.

You may remember that Sparano talked about having to clean up some man-coverage issues after the game at Jacksonville. I asked Sean Smith, who yielded a 22-yard completion to Mike Sims-Walker, what cleaning up thos things meant as far as he's concerned.

"I can only speak for myself, but it's about understanding what you want to take away. What leverage to use. It was a very long game for us so it was kind of easy lose technique on certain plays. It's also about knowing when you're being inside or outside technique."

We know the Dolphins have struggled on special teams the past couple of weeks. They've had two blocked punts and given up returns of 41, 47, 48 yards. So I asked special teams ace Jason Allen what he thinks of the play of his unit.

"If you had a scale of 1 to 10 based on the potential we have, I would say it's about a five or six right now," he said. "I'm just being honest. I feel the potential we have as a group, we haven't reached very far in that potential. We have to spend more time on details. [Special teams coordinator] Coach [John Bonoamego] talks all the time about one guy being who we all are. It only takes one guy to mess up the entire special teams. We all got to be together as a unit and have the mentality we're going to get the job done."

Sparano said last week one reason the special teams might be so problematic right now is the mixing and matching being done. Allen doesn't buy that.

"There's no excuses," he said. "First team, second team, you have to do your job. that's the mentality we have to have. We have to do it a high level. We have a bunch of athletes that are fast, big and strong that are more than capable of getting the job done. We have to go out and do it."

BROADCAST UPDATE: Coach Sparano will be my guest on my radio show, Armando and the Amigo, at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday morning. If you live in South Florida, the show is on 640-AM. If you don't live in South Florida, we stream live online here. My show is on Monday through Friday 6-10 a.m.

Second round pick Allen,No excuses... LMAO, Talking about a guy not living up his pick....Mando, do you have anymore more "Qoutes"??????

I think we are keeping white and looking to trade Thigpen. I hope we keep white another year. People crap on him so much over what 10-20 plays his rookie season on an offense riddled with injuries?

I was thinking more of a 2 or 3 on a scale of 10 on how bad our return defense has been.

I think they are even worse then the occasional big play . Why? Because big returns win games and break spirits ,even Ted Ginn proved it once.

Sparano also said before preseason game 2 that he didn't need to see Pennington play. He said he knew what he could do. Then Pennington played. Media seems scared to call it what it is, but where I come from... A liar is a liar

HE GAVE ST'S A 5 or 6 out of 10 being great....somebody go slap that allen kid silly. Or tell him what special teams actually mean...IDIOT!!!

Sparano coming on the Amigo?

I might finally stomach the whiny voice of the host and the military horns that come on at the hour mark!

Please ask Sparano: With Camarillo, Bess, Marshall and Hartline a lock, what do you look at 5th receiver? A guy that complements their style (Fast Guy) or just the best WR available out of the bunch of leftovers.

@Cuban

"Teddy Ginn was a tough player"

Wow, so the last blog all people were talking about was Ted Ginn. Now, on this one, corners "HOPES we keep Pat White another year." So, dude, that's what you HOPE for? I mean, I HOPE we win the division. I HOPE Brandon Marshall has another 100+ catch season and Ronnie Brown stays healthy and runs over 1,000 yards. I HOPE Henne has more TDs than INTs. But you HOPE we keep a scrub on the team to hold a clipboard. Anyone else wonder what happens when a team doesn't make it to the SuperBowl in 30 years? You get fans that HOPE a 4th-stringer makes the team so they can develop into a great 3rd-stringer.

2010 is promising in a lot of ways> It has the potential to be THE LAST,FINALLY, that we have to hear about Brett-Prima-Dona Favre. And if we are lucky, he will take L.Lohan with him on his way out of town!!!
The Phins could turn out to be really special this year!! And the Jesters will fall, loud mouth coach and all!! Sorry JT, Still saying thanks for all you gave to us!!!!!

Hey Armando, when I want to hear your show theres a warn: "THE VIDEO YOU ARE TRYING TO WATCH CANNOT BE VIEWED FORM YOUR CURRENT COUNTRY OR LOCATION", do you have any sugestion to avoid this problem? I'm trying to watch it from México.
Thank you in advance.

George,

Sporano didn't lie. At least not this time. He said I don't NEED to see him play, I know what he can do.
He also said, if Henne gets in his work, Pennington might get in before the half. This was all out there, just because you didn't read it or understand it, doesn't make it a lie.

He said there was a possibility that in the right situation before the half, CP might take a few snaps>and he did! Where is the lie??? Get real!!
Sparano also said before preseason game 2 that he didn't need to see Pennington play. He said he knew what he could do. Then Pennington played. Media seems scared to call it what it is, but where I come from... A liar is a liar

Armando,

Can I call in a question for Tony?

The last time you and I we're on the phone, you hung up on me. I'll be good this time, I PROMISE!!!!

The Best Post By Far So Far Today!!! Great comment DC!

@Cuban

"Teddy Ginn was a tough player"

Quite possibly the only player to run out of bounds more than Dion Sanders!!!

Why is the show called Armando and the friend? Is my Spanish wrong on this one, maybe amigo has differnent meanings? Armando and "the friend" is a horrible title.

What's a "qoute"?

any word on how Patrick Turner did on Sat.?

Turn out the lights

The party's over

Pat, I hope you like it White

Cause that's all you're going to see in Canada

The weather sucks!!!!

Keys to a succesful 2010:

1. Improve kick/punt return coverage.
2. Improve pass rush.
3. Improve backfield coverage
4. Keep everyone healthy
5. Run the rock like hell
6. Forget the wildcat exist and let Henne light it up through the air.

enrique,

and sweep the Jets!

Yes George, Sparano is a "liar"! LOL. Oh my god the guys a football coach not the leader of the nation. He's no required to tell the media every little thing he does and thinks. Coaches actually use the media to misinform other teams and have been doing it for decades. He's a "liar" because two weeks ago he didn't intend to use Pennington but Saturday he used him anyway? HOW DOES THAT MAKE HIM A LIAR?! A million different scenarios could have played out between the time of the interview and Saturday that changed his mind about putting Penny in the game. So it's your opinion that if he's going to change his mind about something he should immediately call all the members of the media to inform them of his change of mind and reasoning? Are you serious with this BS? I'm sorry but you need to get a clue before you start accusing people of being liars.

allen picked himself for the dolphin at 16
ginn pick himself 9th
white picked himself in the 2nd rd
and worse than all these picks in dolphin history JOHN AVERY pick himself over RANDY MOSS for the dolphins!
theres the new sayin DONT HATE THE PLAYA HATE THE MANAGEMENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wonder.............

If we win 10 games

If we avg. 25 points a game

If Marshall makes 100 catches

If Marshall gains 1000 yards

Will Henne still throw the ball too hard?

Will Henne still have no touch on his passes?

Will Henne still have proved nothing?

Will Henne still not be elite?

Bonoamego has got to go. I can't believe the Tuna retained him after our fiasco of special teams play last year. The big 3 draft with special teams in mind and we still suck. Whatever Bonoamego's tried hasn't worked yet. ST will cost us games this season if he doesn't figure it out soon.

Good point Smak,

He may be the next punching bag for the F.O. ala Pasqualone.

I KNOW WE ARE TALKING NFL!! but for one game in college which QB would you want to have to win that last game!!
A:henne
B:thigpen
C:white
if you keeping it real you will say C, but now he cant play ball all of a sudden! the league gonna be in big trouble if some of the old nfl heads dont changed to the players ability instead of trying to change the player b/c im willing to bet 75%+ of all colleges to lil leagues teams run some form of the spread offense. the I-formation is dead except in the nfl

Hey smak, I could've swore Henning and Bono wouuld have been canned after last season. Very suprising.

Shawn,

All the injuries last year bought them a pass.

Armando, what is the email we can reach you on during your radio show? I listen every morning at work. But being from the uk it's easier to email than call. I enjoy the show by the way.

Nick

dolphins4life, seriously, White was drafted for the wildcat, NOT to become the next Dan Marino. I don't care how good he was in college, he's too small to be an NFL qb unless he's used as a gimmick guy. You can not change your entire philosophy to fit one player, the player has to come in and assimilate. Bottom line is that the Dolphins management took a risk and knew they were doing it. The risk failed and I GUARANTEE you that when he's cut, he may end up on another squad, but he will never be a starting NFL QB. It is what it is.

I agree with Smaknstein, maybe the Special Teams coach is not that special and we need to move on.....

Nick,

Are you a British Citizen?
If so, I find that very refreshing.
Makes the Dolphins experience "intercontinental."

The nfl is not going to be in trouble because teams don't change to one particular players ability unless that player is

A. The first pick who is an impact offensive player like a QB or RB (Someone who touches the ball 25 or more times per game) OR

B. On a team that's in it's first year of a rebuild and has acquired said impact player.

The special teams sucked last year at times. And now we are seeing shades of that again, I simply dont think that guy can coach in this league. He is just not good enough.

D4life-Way to stand your ground on the last blog. We don't and shouldn't always agree on everything Dolphins. (Except the hatred of guys in green) You were taking it from all sides, sort of like a nympho at a gang bang. Good job.
The Falcons up next..For personal reasons I can't wait to watch this game. The Falcons have a couple of Montana guys, one Kroy Bierman is a very good player, and will give the O line something to think about as far as containment. These teams are similar in a lot of ways. Young Qb's high expectations, like to pound the rock, both are expecting better a pass rush, and have questions in the secondary.
Traditionaly the third game is the most like a regular season game. Both the offense and defense will get a real chance to establish a rhythm and this will be the most realistic gauge of how we match up with the better teams

White never beat Florida in a bowl game and Henne did. So we're talking about the competition level as well as a college that is undoubtledly Quarterback U.

Also, Henne holds most of the high school records for a quarterback in the state of Pennsylvania...so what you might say? Well let;s look at the NFL greats that came from that state-Marino, Namath, Montana-just to name a few. So yeah, I would pick Henne. (as long as it wasn't against Ohio State since I'm an alumni of OSU)

Lastly, If White is as good as you believe he is then he certainly won't have any trouble landing on another team and getting a chance to become the QB you think he can be. If the Phins are making a huge mistake as you seem to think they are, then there are at least a dozen other teams that will see his potential and will pick him up. So you will get the chance to see if you're right in the next couple of seasons.

thats where you keep misinterrpeting my comments, i never said pat white was a starting QB but at the same time he just as big as thipen now!! all im saying is the regime couldnt have possible used a 2nd on a player for gimmicks and then never used him in the gimmicks! that argument dont make sense, and why havent they tried thigpen with those same things white was supposed to be brought in for since the are similar(in that they are mobile). what i heard and you heard are 2 different things!! I heard we draft white to give henne competition at the QB spot, yes henne was always the choice but henne came in with a lot a stuff to prove not to mention he always folded vs. ohio st. and yes if henne panned out which it seems he has white would then be used for wildcat and gimmick play!! you dont change a players throwing motion for him to be a gimmick player you let him do what the gimmick calls for when you only run the play maybe 5x a game

Shawn,

I agree. If he's that good or has that much potential then he'll land somewhere but I highly doubt he stays here in Miami

What if there isn't a 4th team QB by end of the week???? Then he wouldn't play the 4th team QB would he?

Why does Sparano keep White and not cut him? Makes no sense unless:

a) they just want to torture the poor dude
b) there's some alternate plan we can't figure out
c) there's something wrong with QB #2 or QB #3 that makes Sparano hesitate to get ride of QB #4.
d) he's waiting as long as possible to see if another team suddenly needs a QB and he can get more value for Pennington or Thigpen.

I don't think Sparano is trying to torture White so that rules out a)

realistically how much does Sparano need to see White? He knows what he's got and he knows that White would never run the base offense unless it was a complete emergency so why waste reps on it

White has been useful in camp by keeping Pennington's reps down and letting him come along slowly - if nothing else fans should thank him for that. I think Saturday showed that c) isn't likely as Pennington looked fine.

b) and d) ? I think so... As long as they don't need to cut a QB they won't because they are willing to trade Thigpen or Pennington if the price is right. With two gmaes left in pre-season there's plenty of time for another team to end up in a QB crisis and come calling with a higher than normal offer. If another team needs a #1 they will come asking for Pennington, if they need a strong #2 they'll come asking for Thigpen. If nobody come with a good offer they'll cut White at the last round after it's really too late for a division rival to pick him up for a few weeks and suck our playbook out of him.

J D Folsom would look much improved playing in tandem with Carlos Dansby.
Micah Johnson would look much improved playing in tandem with Carlos Dansby.
Hell, I'd look much improved playing in tandem with Carlos Dansby.

Tim Dobbins would look like....................Tim Dobbins playing in tandem with Carlos Dansby.

Is it possible to sign Channing Crowder to the practice squad?

boy we have a dumb trifecta!! you draft a guy in the 2nd round to only cut him 1yr and 5 month into his tenure and with no possible way of getting any value for him, not even a 7th round pick. im a betting man and i will be here unless it gets ugly like in the past but i got pat white staying with the team, thigpen getting traded!! i will take whatever you wanna say then but until then lets end this because we are going nowhere

...75%+ of all colleges to lil leagues teams run some form of the spread offense. the I-formation is dead except in the nfl

Posted by: Dolphins4Life1973 | August 23, 2010 at 05:16 PM

Umm most NFL teams do run the spread offense to some degree ie Arizona, Green Bay, Seattle. White ran the spread option which is a different style.

What is it with all the hub bub on Thigpen?
When CP10 went down last year, Thigpen was brought in as a backup.
That is the only reason Thigpen is in Miami.
If the FO thought he was capable then that's good enough for me.
In hindsight, it looks like a good move if we end up trading him a getting a 3rd or 4th round pick out of it.
We can always hope that there is a "Dave Waanstedt" out there somewhere who will give a 2nd.
If no trade, then we have a very capable #3 QB.

ZEB you spot on and my answer would be B: we know nothing about the dolphins plans: hell even mando said they kick reporters out of practice after 30 minutes so its a lot reporters dont see. and all story take a life of their own when you have enuff ppl believing what you write to be the truth

KEY WORDS IN MY STATEMENT=SOME FORM OF!!

COMPREHEND WHAT I SAY BEFORE YOU ARE QUICK TO TRY AND CORRECT! I KNOW THE DIFFERENCE TRUST ME

R&R EXPRESS,

Well said. Thigpen's presence here makes Pat White expendable.
Well, Thigpen and the fact that we no longer need gimmicks now that our offense is coming together.

I feel a little bad for White because he seems like a stand up type of guy. Still I'm getting a little tired of hearing it.

Pat, get some Mickey Mouse boots and a good Carhart coat, you're going to need it...........

MY LAST thought on the white saga is this!! until i hear one of the big 3 to say he remains in the teams plan then he's gonna be on the team! all players they said this about got cut

Zeb-

Good post. Maybe Thiggy is being showcased for a trade and in our secluded practices (unavailable to media) we are running these top secret WildPat plays that we are waiting to unleash on teams...could happen. But why would they not put him in against live competition to at least see how he performs under pressure?

KARLOS DANSBY A.W.O.L. where the heck has he been or is it just me? looks real SLOW, and lost

I Cant Believe That Anyone Here Would Still Believe A Guy Who Gets No Reps, Plays In No Games And Has Been Terribly Inconsistent In Practice Is All Of A Sudden Going Tp Be Our 3rd String QB. Based On What, He Stinks?? No Thank You, By Patty

dr lecter i was thinking the same thing but i'll give him the benefit of the doubt. i thought he looked disinterested in the J-ville game! i was hoping it was cause channing was out or just the preseason blues

Listen dude you DON'T HAVE TO SHOUT. Your statement said that NFL teams have to wisen up and use some form of the spread (as if NFL teams do NOT). And your statement was also meant to defend Pat White. Also iForm is not dead except in the NFL-Big 10 uses I and Pro form all the time.

So next time you come at me as if I am parsing words re-read your own statement or don;t reply. I was being civil but please don;t make me put a verbal smackdown on you.

Week one of the regular season will be here soon enough and we will all have the answers to our questions as they relate to the QB position.

In the mean time, let's have some fun by sending the Falcons home as Chickens.

Peace to all Dolphins fans!

i bet u want tell me a new word i never heard before!! all these baby NJPHINFAN who think ppl suppose to buy their talk as the law. i havent attacked nobody but i value my opinion just like you value yours!! i've been agreeing and disagreeing all day with no problems but now he you go! its whatever you can take it there, i wont play along

also i just realize you must be thinking that b/c my text was in capital case letters i was shouting! that wasnt the case, when i realized it was like that i just kept typing

Bobby hates P.White more than his family .

please Dolphins4life no more writing in caps .it's very annoying .

Guy's again, Look for PatTKO)White to be wearing a "Brown" Uniform next year, Not The Cleveland kind, But UPS brown....

i know my bad i realized to late to erase and start over
