Everyone is reporting today that Chad Henne will play about a half in Saturday's preseason game at Jacksonville. That is, after all, what coach Tony Sparano said.
"I think probably Henne's going to go, I'd like to take Henne into the half," Sparano said Thursday. "I got a play count particularly in my head right now, that would take him through the first half, but if you hit that play count a little bit earlier I might take him out. If we move the ball and had some success and he hit that play count and I felt good about it, I think I might do that. Unless there was a two minute situation before the half hanging there that I feel like he might need or something like that. Right now I'm thinking that he's going to go the first half of the game and then we'll see how it trickles down. I'd imagine at this point Tyler [Thigpen] would get in there and we'd see where we are."
Well, I'm more concerned with the "we'd see where we are" part.
Pat White, last year's second-round draft pick, is the see where we are guy. He is apparently an after-thought now, if one believes Sparano -- and I do. He was something of an afterthought last week when he came into the game the final series to do little other than take a knee.
Folks, his days on the Dolphins are numbered. I don't know if he makes it past the first round of cuts in a couple of weeks. It definitely doesn't look like he makes it out of the final cuts.
Simply, he's not a very good quarterback. Simply, there are no plans in the works to try him at another position. Simply, his goose seems nearly done if not out-right cooked.
Earlier this week Sparano said White showed marked improvement throwing the football a week ago. That grand improvement didn't get White any meaningful snaps in last Saturday's game. And it didn't vault him above fourth-string this week.
Sure, he's taking more snaps than Chad Pennington right now. But Chad Pennington is an established NFL quarterback who doesn't need to fry his surgically repaired arm in practices. The Dolphins know what Pennington can do.
Unfortunately for White, the Dolphins know what he can do also. And what he cannot do.
He's simply not good enough.
Is he better than he was as a rookie in 2009? Yes. Is he good? No, not really.
Sparano hasn't said any of this, mind you. He doesn't have to. Sometimes you don't have to hear it from the coach to know it is true. Pat White is the fourth-best quarterback in camp.
And unless the Dolphins keep four quarterbacks or trade one of those ahead of him, White's days in Miami are now numbered.

Wow dude u ever got anything nice to say bout anyone??

If Henne plays the entire 1st half does that mean Marshall, Hartline and Bess will too?
Does anyone believe we'll see any substantial playing time for Wallace, Moore and Turner while Henne's still in the game?
Moore had that great comeback reception, but I'm hoping Wallace or Turner really starts too show something.
Posted by: odinseye | August 19, 2010 at 10:31 PM
Henne and Marshall will settle all the questions from last weekend... they've been working on it... believe dat!
Posted by: carlito from golfito | August 19, 2010 at 10:32 PM
Carlito,
To be honest those two drops didn't raise any questions with me. Marshall's a stud and he's going to get his catches.
I was a little disappointed, but only because I can't wait to see the 60 yarder or the big catch and run over the middle.
Marshall's awesome after the catch. I don't think the gut knows what a sideline looks like.

Odin,
No questions with me either (especially with the weather), but the media has been relentless about it... I can't wait until they get shut up

No Dude, I don't have nothing good to say to the same chicken who is afraid to use his own name and always has something to say to me by posting under numerous names. Maybe when your here long enough u will get it.

The media will always go for the sky is falling approach. It sells newspapers. Or in this case a blog. They always read to much into this! Especially the preseason! IMHO the preseason (other than evaluating talent is useless! =)

Either way man you don't help yourself by enticing the person! Who ever that person may or may not be! Just enjoy yourself and talk to people who don't f with you! ignore everyone else and eventually this might turn back into a real blog!

I don't mind getting off football talk during the down time (although I haven't been around for very long) Nor do I mind chatting with people we are all Phin Phans! It's just all the senseless bickering across the internet which puzzles me! (its like beating up your sister (yea you kicked that persons as s online but who wants to admit it)

Junk! A waste of a high draft choice!! Bottom line! CFL material.. Telling it like it is!!
Posted by: James | August 19, 2010 at 11:03 PM
Some of you need to realise that the Pat White Wildcat experiment has already been tried and was a disaster. Same with the spread that had maybe 1 good play. Pat White is terrible and a waste of precious roster space that can be used for other needs such as a young KR prospect. One of the Trifectas biggest mistakes. However since the team is improving I will take the good with the bad.
Posted by: ss | August 19, 2010 at 11:06 PM
Not even CFL... Arena football!! If even that!

Can anyone here name one high draft pick that this front office has let go?
6th or 7th rnd pick Johhn Nalbone has not prospered as a player. He couldn't beat out Joey "the statue" Haynos and they had to bring in David Martin, who didn't even play last year and we don't get stories of him being let go.
6th rnd pick Donald Thomas has been constantly hurt, they have had to rotate guard and bring other guards in and yet we don't get any stories of him being cut.
The only player in the first 4 rnds that this team has let go was Shawn Murphy. No other top rnd pick has been let go. This front office has let go of free agents, yes, but not there draft picks, so you really think that they will release a 2nd rounder after only one year?
Thigpen is older than Henne, Pennington is the 2nd, when will thigpen get anytime to play or get better? White has more upside than Thigpen, is younger Henne, more athletic than both and offers different skill set.
My guess is someone has shown an interest in Thigpen and the Dolphins are showcasing him, getting film on him.
This is just my two pence.

2010 5th round.
Posted by: R & R EXPRESS | August 19, 2010 at 11:39 PM
Mr. Bomb,
Thanks- I understand your point, but aside from that, are you thinking we should get rid of Donald Thomas?
Posted by: odinseye | August 19, 2010 at 11:43 PM
How high of a pick would Thigpen be worth too a team that finds itself in some type of QB trouble?
How high of a pick would you take for him?
Posted by: odinseye | August 19, 2010 at 11:46 PM
I hope we could find a "Dave Waanstedt" out there somewhere that would give us a 2nd Round Pick (ala Jay Feely from Philly).
Posted by: R & R EXPRESS | August 19, 2010 at 11:49 PM
The main lesson if White is cut is that draft picks should not be desired above players who have already demonstrated some talent. Keep Tyler at all costs, you are going to need him. He has already proven he is worth more than...say, the potential represented by a second round pick which may be worth - White and nothing more. That would be nothing at all.
Posted by: Richard Dempsey | August 19, 2010 at 11:51 PM
As told a week ago, Pat White's days as Dolphin are numbered.
He was Sparano's experiment trying to build a creative offense, assuming that Pat was ready to run an NFL team with NCAA offense flavor.
Just remember the biggest difference between college and professional is speed, and as Pat White has showed poor talent at full speed, he is a long term project.
Sparano has been patient and no matter how big has been Pat's efforts to upgrade his body, his passing skills don't justify a 4th QB this season because that is luxury as it might hurt depth at other positions.
Also Tyler Thigpen has proved to have the tools for the double assignment of running the offense on standard mode and under wildcat formation, so cutting Pat won't mean to avoid wildcat variations.
Posted by: MexDolfan | August 19, 2010 at 11:55 PM
Pat White IMHO has never and will never be an NFL player! Too undersized to be... Which really surprised me due to tunas rep to draft huge mother Fers.... It was and still is a reach I wouldn't have drafted the kid at all I would have signed him as a un-drafted free agent! But I am just a couch GM so that is just my opinion! =)
Posted by: grreatdane | August 20, 2010 at 12:10 AM
Like I have said before.. Can't remember where I heard it but I heard that the only reason we drafted white is cause there was a rumor Billacheat wanted him and we selected him to f him! hope that is the reason... Would explain why the coaches really never gave him a chance n tried to mess him up as much as possible! to rub billacheats nose in it!
Posted by: grreatdane | August 20, 2010 at 12:13 AM
I think he would have had a better chance of developing and actually end up starting in New England had billacheat got a hold of him! Which in theory would have been devastating to miami's hopes!
Posted by: grreatdane | August 20, 2010 at 12:16 AM
Cause I think with a few years under a QB friendly regime he would have prospered... (New England)... I think given a real chance which (in my opinion) was never really given to Mr. White he may have been able to make it!
Posted by: grreatdane | August 20, 2010 at 12:19 AM
Oh and by the way Tosh-0 shot at Nick Satan fing Classic agree with who ever made the post earlier forgot! =)

Mr. Bottom
Sir I say this in the most respectful way, I hope you are spending Aloco and my money responsibly. We are working real hard to support you. Hopefully you have spent your money on Miami Dolphins Jerseys and merchandise! (Not Jets!) I have no reason to suspect foul play here! Just a friendly reminder from a loyal Phin Phan such as your self!
Dane the Grrreat! =)
Posted by: grreatdane | August 20, 2010 at 12:25 AM
I guess at this point I am talking to my self good night Phin Phan Land!
Posted by: grreatdane | August 20, 2010 at 12:27 AM
I'll give you my armchair GM's opinion.
I would axe Pat White RIGHT NOW. I wouldn't even wait until the 31st.
Then I would trade Thigpen to the Chicago Bears for their 3rd round pick and QB Dan LeFevour, their 6th rd pick in 2010 out of Central Michigan.
PS: The 2011 draft is going to be loaded with good QB prospects.
Posted by: odinseye | August 20, 2010 at 12:28 AM
Thats a good thought... But what if Henne becomes the second comming if you know what I mean!
Posted by: grreatdane | August 20, 2010 at 12:30 AM
Would we really want to draft a back up next year?? I think there are more pressing needs that we need to address next year. (I hate to admit it cause I love them both) But running back is a concern of mine! And any one that knows my posts knows that I love both the R&R show! FS may or may not be a concern! I hope not, I wanna see Clemons become the man! LONG LIVE THE PHINS!
Posted by: grreatdane | August 20, 2010 at 12:35 AM
Belicheat does it all the time. He learned it from Parcell's.
Belicheat had Brady. He "finds" Cassell, has a chance to showcase him and trades him away for picks.
You can never have enough good QB's. We gave up a 5th for Thigpen, if we can get a 3rd, we're making money. LeFevour could be the next big story and like I said, the 2011 draft will be deep at QB.
This is the best time to work it. We have a promising young talent in Henne and a bonafide backup(who could start on more than a few teams) in Penny.
Posted by: odinseye | August 20, 2010 at 12:40 AM
No news here----every mothers great-great-GREAT grandchildren knew Pat White wasn't here to stay----Bye Pattie, at least we had one year of wonder with you, Good luck in your next career field whatever that might be!!!
Posted by: superPHIN | August 20, 2010 at 12:41 AM
I didn't understand the Pat White pick in the draft. He's just too small to be a QB in the NFL. So, the rumor was that we took him to prevent other teams from having a potent Wildcat offense. Then, we discovered that the WildPat didn't work too well. Tried the Spred with him. Still not viable. He didn't play last week and the word is that he isn't playing much this week either. No reps for Pat. Now, unless the FO is going to pull a rabbit outta their keyster, I just don't see him having a lot of trade value. Yes, he's gotten bigger, but no one's seen enough of him to know if he's good or bad now. The only other option is that they're gonna try the WildPat one more year and have been keeping it under wraps in the pratice bubble and don't want to show their hand in the pre-season!
Posted by: Tracy474 | August 20, 2010 at 01:07 AM
Can we trade him to the 49ers for a fifth round pick? Actually in all seriousness I hope that the Dolphins trade him so he doesn't go to the Jets or the Patriots not because I think he can make plays for them but in the unlikely event he can spill some of the beans on our playbook. Trade him.

ex owner of the dolphins is interviewed by cnbc talking about cleaning bathrooms .
Posted by: ALoco | August 20, 2010 at 07:17 AM
If the Dolphins trade Thigpen and keep White, I will lose all confidence in their judgment. I don't think that will happen because it is obvious Tyler is the backup on this team for Henne or Pennington. I don't think they will keep the bad and get rid of the good because Thigpen has more trade value.

It is possible that Pat White is gone, but as someone has already stated, how would you trade him, if no one knows what he can or can't do. So you're left with cutting a 2nd round pick after one year, when it takes a few years for a QB who is the starter to catch on. I have watched White throw and I have watched Thigpen throw. Thigpen is more accurate at this time, but he is also wildly inconsistent, two good play, one big stinker. This is how he has been all of his career. Pat White has been fearless in his pursuit of playing the game. I think the kid deserves to be given a chance.
No, I don't want Donald Thomas gone, I just don't see the articles berating him or Nalbone as much as I see the beat down of Pat White, a bloke who only threw 5 passes last year. It gets ugly and makes me support the underdog, piling on is never good and a lot of media types are throwing this kid under the bus, so I say keep him and move Thigpen.
Posted by: Dark Matter Bomb | August 20, 2010 at 07:40 AM
OR, Pigpen is is being showcased as trade bait to a league dreadfully thin on QB talent and Pat White hangs around as a #3 QB/special teamer like "CRASH" Jensen!
Personally, I could care less. If Henne gets hurt or sux it's game over anyway....
Posted by: DStrock | August 20, 2010 at 07:57 AM
So Lets See If The 'nothing Is Ever Our Fault' Brigade Come Out And Admit They Wasted A High Draft Puck When They Totally Messed Up On Their Selection Of White!
We Are More Likeky To See The 'second Coming' Than We Are To See Parcells, Ireland And Sporano Admit That!

I tend to lean more towards Thigpen being showcased. Spot on.
Just my two pence

Cut him and make room for one of the fringe players.. Ness Moore ect.
Posted by: neilVA | August 20, 2010 at 08:11 AM
Why would the Dolphins trade Thigpen, that would leave them with Penne, a QB whose shoulder is problematic, and White who isn't a true NFL QB. There's no way Thigpen is traded. The Dolphins usually usually act quickly when then recognize that they made a mistake. Cutting White would be that recognition. NFL team are pulling the trigger on mistakes much faster than they used to. Seattle just traded Laurence Jackson a high draft pick of a year age for a late rounder. So don't be surprised is White is cut. The Dolphins aren't going to keep him around for 5 to 10 plays a game that they deploy the Wildcat. Oh and for those of you that say White has blazing speed....think again. He's 4.6, 4.7 in the 40, fast for a QB, but far from blazing.
Posted by: mike33076 | August 20, 2010 at 08:14 AM
While I'm still not completely sold on Chad Henne, I do feel that Pat White is just too small and inconsistent to be effective at the "Big-Tuna" level. We'll soon see, I think.
Posted by: Victor Barney | August 20, 2010 at 08:22 AM
Ahh, vindication. Funny how last year (into this) folks on here kept hoping against hope, talking up Pat White. Now, I am a Dolphins fan 2nd to none. I do my homework before the season, I watch EVERY game (sometimes more than once), listen to press conferences, check Mando and hear about the latest, basically take following my team very, very seriously. And I could NEVER understand what people kept seeing in Pat White to put high hopes on the kid. You'd hear, "he was great in college, give him a chance, etc." all day long on here. GIVE HIM A CHANCE TO DO WHAT EXACTLY?!? I had the feeling, the SECOND this pick was made in the draft, that it was a bust. He's too small. The system they ran in WVU DOESN'T WORK in the pros. Yes, he had some of the qualities that might make him great in college, but not so great in the NFL. And I don't consider myself some expert scout or anything. It's the same with John Beck. He's now in the Redskins (so I hear a lot about him on DC radio). I was telling my Skins fan friends what the radio is saying now, "THIS GUY SUCKS!!!" I knew he'd suck the second HE was drafted. Two horrible picks, two wastes, and better to cut them loose than keep the cancer on your team any longer. Pat White, you may be a good guy, but I could care less about that. I want WINNERS on my team, and you're not that (at least not in the NFL). Good luck, now clean out your locker.
Posted by: DC Dolfan | August 20, 2010 at 08:28 AM
Couple of things....how come people don't ramble on and lament the previous regimes wasted pick of John Beck in the second round. It's the same thing people....and NOBODY rants and raves about this like they do anout Pat White. How come?
Secondly, Pat White was never drafted to be the starter on this team. I believe he was drafted for two reasons. To keep him away from teams like the Patriots and to add a different wrinkle to our offence. I still think he can do that. And can you guys say for certainty that the Pats won't grab him and use him sparingly and he won't huer us? Welker is tearing it up now too and it would have been nice if he hadn't have gone to the Pats. Just saying....
Posted by: Craig M | August 20, 2010 at 08:30 AM
The only player that this Front Office drafted, that has been let go is Shawn Murphy. Even the late round picks are still here for the most part, so I don't think they release a 2nd round pick, into the nether. I could be wrong, wouldn't be the first time, but what do we do with Thigpen if we keep him?
Henne is the starter, Penne is the 2nd. Thigpen is eratic and inconsistent, and will never get better without playing time, but he won't be getting the playing time.
White will offer a different skill set while continuing to learn the game. Look what Dennis Dixon offers in Pittsburgh or Vick offers, while on the playing field, in Philly. Vince Young will allow Johnson to run for more yards in Tennessee because the LBer have to stay home or risk him taking off the other way. If nothing else, it gives the opposing defense one more thing to have to work on and less time to work on Ricky and Ronnie and Brandon.
Posted by: Dark Matter Bomb | August 20, 2010 at 08:36 AM
maybe we can trade him to the 49'rs and get another 5th round for him.....then he can ride the bench with the Ginn family. And for all the nay sayers with their would have and should haves....ya don't have clue, ya bunch of window lickkers...DDD's! to many 1st round, second round, etc draft picks over the course of time have been busts! It happens, always has and always will! It ain't no bodies fault.
