Pat White's days with Dolphins seem numbered

Everyone is reporting today that Chad Henne will play about a half in Saturday's preseason game at Jacksonville. That is, after all, what coach Tony Sparano said.

"I think probably Henne's going to go, I'd like to take Henne into the half," Sparano said Thursday. "I got a play count particularly in my head right now, that would take him through the first half, but if you hit that play count a little bit earlier I might take him out. If we move the ball and had some success and he hit that play count and I felt good about it, I think I might do that. Unless there was a two minute situation before the half hanging there that I feel like he might need or something like that. Right now I'm thinking that he's going to go the first half of the game and then we'll see how it trickles down. I'd imagine at this point Tyler [Thigpen] would get in there and we'd see where we are."

Well, I'm more concerned with the "we'd see where we are" part.

Pat White, last year's second-round draft pick, is the see where we are guy. He is apparently an after-thought now, if one believes Sparano -- and I do. He was something of an afterthought last week when he came into the game the final series to do little other than take a knee.

Folks, his days on the Dolphins are numbered. I don't know if he makes it past the first round of cuts in a couple of weeks. It definitely doesn't look like he makes it out of the final cuts.

Simply, he's not a very good quarterback. Simply, there are no plans in the works to try him at another position. Simply, his goose seems nearly done if not out-right cooked.

Earlier this week Sparano said White showed marked improvement throwing the football a week ago. That grand improvement didn't get White any meaningful snaps in last Saturday's game. And it didn't vault him above fourth-string this week.

Sure, he's taking more snaps than Chad Pennington right now. But Chad Pennington is an established NFL quarterback who doesn't need to fry his surgically repaired arm in practices. The Dolphins know what Pennington can do.

Unfortunately for White, the Dolphins know what he can do also. And what he cannot do.

He's simply not good enough.

Is he better than he was as a rookie in 2009? Yes. Is he good? No, not really.

Sparano hasn't said any of this, mind you. He doesn't have to. Sometimes you don't have to hear it from the coach to know it is true. Pat White is the fourth-best quarterback in camp.

And unless the Dolphins keep four quarterbacks or trade one of those ahead of him, White's days in Miami are now numbered.

"But White's skills as a passer always had been doubted - until the combine.

While Stafford opted against participating in the throwing drills and Mark Sanchez - another projected first-round pick - was unimpressive in his workout, White wowed scouts, coaches and executives with his accuracy and arm strength, leading many to reassess their evaluation of the fleet-footed southpaw.

"He really helped himself with that workout," an unidentified assistant coach told Sports Illustrated. "He made people recognize him as a quarterback."

As expected, White also showed off his speed in the 40-yard dash by clocking in at 4.55 seconds, the fastest time among quarterbacks.

But talent evaluators were pleasantly surprised by the passing display put on by White, who generated widespread buzz by making all the "NFL-type" throws.

"I think he showed that he can be a legitimate quarterback prospect," an assistant coach told Yahoo! Sports. "If you cover one eye and just watch where the football is going, I don't think you would question the skill level there."

"Uncovering the other eye would reveal the 6-foot, 197-pound White - not exactly the desired dimensions for an NFL quarterback."

White is faster than Thigpen who does a 4.78 and don't even ask about Henne or Penny.

White isn't going anywhere. Thigpen is the goner.

How does someone from France develop love affair with meatball subs?

Is it true what they say about France?

If Thigpen's is a goner, in which manner will he depart?

i would rather have tim teabag than pat white...enough said

I know we have all day tomorrow and it's a Friday night, but come on Armando!

I want to know how fast Tim Dobbins will put Crowder on the pine?

Hmmmmmmmmmmm..............I wonder what a French Adam Sandler looks like?

What do they say about France?

I don't think Crowder will be riding the pine... He has been very good in practice and should flourish next to Dansby in Nolans system... He had a down year last year, but should be fine in 2010... Don't get me wrong though, Dobbins is a good player and he is a major upgrade from Ayodele and Torbor

Either way I'll be happy. Last year we had Ayodele and Torbor playing by "default". This year it will be whichever two are playing the best out of the three.

With Dobbins and Micah Johnson waiting in the wings, I think the Trifecta has solidified the middle.

PS: Johnson is so effing chiseled it sickening!

Yeah Johnson does have injury issues though, I think he is a good practice squad candidate

***** The Dynasty Be Fins! *****

I know of the two injuries. I think they were both during his senior season. The last one during their bowl game.

Were there others?

Dude, where have you been?

Listen Bro, there's this Chick I've been trying to impress, see and...um...well I'm a little strapped for cash, yeah strapped I tell ya.

Anyway.......I was wondering.......ah......could you talk to that Nostrahomus character about getting me some lotto numbers for tomorrow?

PS: Homes midday, yeah make it the midday numbers see, that way, well.....you know what I mean.

The only way Thigpen is not a goner is if one of the other Fin QBs goes down before the final cut to 53.

I expect that he'll be traded close to the final cut because it's a given that other teams will either lose a QB in next two games to injuries or simply want to improve their #2 QB position (Colts come to mind).

Fins could get a 2nd, 3rd or 4th round pick from a desperate team (higher than the 5th the Fins gave up). Someone mentioned that he'd be a restricted free agent next year which would make it an expensive deal to keep him riding the bench (the business side of football would decide his fate).

There are various teams that run Wildcat plays for which he has the talent.

A few stats for stat people:

Henne's hand span is 8 1/4", 32" arm span

White's hand span is 9 1/4", 33 1/2 arm span

White used gloves because he liked to. Many have said he used gloves because he had small hands (Flacco has a 9 1/4" hand span).

I wouldn't take less than a tird rounder.

Either way it shakes out, I think we'll be in good shape going into the season.

what's the scoop on the game tomorrow night?

Pat White was drafted because he has an impressive NCAA resume + I listen to the fans, papers & radio talk shows here in S FLa bash on Pat White. It is true he has yet to complete a NFL passs BUT only in 5 attempts. He was drafted for his accomplishments of spead offense and wild cat. Did we forget Chad Pennington & Ronnie Brown went down last season due to injury?
Last I checked, that Duo was an essential part of this offense.
I live here in S Fla and I'm a Miami Fan but lets not forget that White was a rookie last year and deserves another chance on this team. There is no question Penningtons leadership and skills but Pennington, 34 years old, is injury prone with a bad wing (Throwing arm).
If White gets some playtime and does not perform then trade him at the end of the season. Don't squander the 2nd round pick too early. I watched many WVU games of Pat White and he's got the goods (I'm not saying he's the next Marino). It is my opinion that he needs to settle in and get more playtime. We know what Henne & Pennington can do... why not have White play more preseaon when the games don't count. He needs the experience.

Did You Know...
2005 132.4
2006 159.7
2007 151.4
2008 142.3
Starting record of 34-8 is unmatched by any quarterback in WVU history and sixth in the NCAA in most career victories as a starting quarterback.
Only quarterback to have started and won 4 consecutive bowl games.
His 4,400+ yards rushing are the most among any quarterback in FBS history
He has accounted for 100+ touchdowns, which is a Big East record for any position.

Knowing this franchise... they'll trade him to NE and he'll play with another great trade...does the name Welker ring a bell? Yeah I'm being sarcastic.
GO FINs!!!

The speed of the NFL is so different from playing in the Big East...PW looks lost out there, just like Beck who came from the WAC.
I'm not saying that every QB who comes out of non-powerhouse college conferences cannot play in the NFL (think Pennington), all one has to do is watch PW in practice and the few times he took snaps last year and its quite obvious he is not going to be a starter in the NFL, EVER....cut bait and move on.

Armando, I had to think about this one a while. The easy and maybe obvious path is to suggest exactly as you have, that Pat White is finished as a dolphin. I agree with the previous article about how Pat really hasn't given the Fins many options. But Miami is also complicit in this regard, the Fins drafted Pat as an option style QB, have done so since day 1 and have said so everyday since. It may take 3 or 4 years to get Pat White to where he needs to be, just look at Tyler Thigpen, but would you rather a guy like that bounce around the league, or stay close to home and take your time. He is a very good quarterback and has already proven so at a high level in the NCAA. A major part of the problem is the design of the Miami offense, which originally had a WildCat style offense with Ronnie Brown, then the Brown injury, the Rickey interception(s?), and finally the realization of Henne at QB, and the intelligent return to a traditional Marino style set. I say, don't forget the WildCat, maybe its only 6 to 8% of playcalls, but it can clearly provide the homerun ball. I remember White overthrowing Ginn, I think it was game one or two, I guess Phillips catches that ball, and Pat has a bit better touch by now. Also, this crap about how White will do this and won't do that, is garbage. The coaches tell the players what they will and wont do, and clearly Pat White has the acumen of a professional who will respond. If he needs to play wideout or run back a punt, put him in there. Finally, there was the hit in the Steelers game last year, that portrayed White as small, and perhaps not big enough to play at this level. I don't buy this either, and to be honest, the Fins appeared disorganized and not well coached in those last three games. It wasn't a very fair situation to judge, and he seems fine to me now. I say hold onto Pat White, don't coddle him, but instead fan the flames, and see if it tempers him, or if he just runs out the kitchen. My guess is he will respond just fine. Thats my 2 cents.

oops guess I showed my true colors a bit, Brandon Marshall not Phillips of course -- ha!

quit worrying about the "wasted pick". It happens. Look at the hundreds of top ten overalls that never worked out. The goal is to hit more than miss, and for the first time in a decade that is what this Front Office is doing... hit more than miss. It was a gamble, but at least it wasn't a J. Russell or V. Gholston, etc.

Pat White is circling the drain of the toilet. The sheer gravity of the situation will send on his way. No worries.

they are showcasing thigo, talking him up in order to get a higher pick for him. plenty of teams are in serious need of a decent back up, the trio knows they will pay up for thigo...but realistically they will get tops a 3rd rounder. we are set this year with the other three. judging PW going in ice cold as a second stringer on a few wildcat plays as a rookie is ridiculous. anyone would look lost out there in that situation.

for a guy not of NFL caliber, pat got to live the dream, i'm sure he is proud and happy. will dolphins fans be upset with his departure? i really don't think so. but they will be upset with the realization that a good pick was used to select him, even more so because he seriously lacked size and it seemed kind of obvious. one of tuna's best skills is his ability to evaluate talent for a position. maybe bill went to the watercooler and coach cammerwrong snuck in with a parcell's disguise to make this selection. the logic used was flawed and of that magnitude that the disguise theory has merit. drafting a QB who could break flutie's batted ball record, who needs to tippee-toe to see the throwing lane, and is one play away from trauma is without a doubt a cammerwrong selection, not a parcell's selection.

Pat white hasnt been given a chance. The nfl speed takes time to get adjusted to! Chad didn't play when he was a rookie! Pat has played a few plays and yall are ready to throw him under a bus! So much for giving a guy a chance! All I hear is crap from most of the fans about Pat and Marshall dropping passes are yall real fans? Just chill out! I love this team! Give the Players a chance! Dan Marino Clayton and duper are history! and all I ever hear from Danny is whinning! This is a new day and a new team! Shut UP and SUPPORT this team

people dont hate pat white. they hate it when we have a good drive going, white comes in for one play and ruins it. then they boo him off the field. he only ran the cat cause ronnie was injured. ronnie is the only one in the nfl that can really run the cat well. let him be the one for it, and leave henne and marshall on the field, as they are far far far better than failed projects. go phins and goodbye white

Let the kid play with a glove. Stupid to force him to change so much after using such a high pick then give up on him

dont worry bout the wasted 2 rd pick, parcells and company will draft well again next year, see ya pat, good luck as your new job as high school assistant coach, if you can get it

Well, so much for Nolan Carroll pushing Sean Smith for playing time.

dolphins gonna kick some...

It is not Pat Whites fault the Dolphins SELECTED him.

You think the francise made a poor draft decision on PW and now you are looking forward to "Parcells and Company to draft well next year"??? Are You crazy?
I never said Pat White should be a starter. I am simply saying to the franchise... You drafted him now PLAY HIM in pre-season, hell give hime more snaps in practice too. You can not expect a rookie to play at the NFL level and excel/learn holding the clipboard. Come gametime you don't know what you got unless you play him. Case in point... Ever hear of Tom Brady? He was back up to Bledsoe in NE. NE didn't think he had the goods as a starter, at one point talk of trading him...what do you think they say now?
NYG 1st year thought Eli was a bust... look at that Ring gleam on his finger now...

I must say that I have a feeling the staff has made their mind up after not seeing White in Wild Cat formation last night. Hopefully if he's still here next pre-seaon game, they will play him for the entire 2nd half.
If he gets cut I wish him succes.

I think it's interesting that we can't even beat the BEARS with these pretender quarterbacks. I don't see why everyone thinks why Pat White was so terrible. Maybe cuz he never got a real chance. He was awesome at West Virginia. He single handedly elevated a virtually unknown Big East Team into a National football force to be reckoned with - beating two SEC and one Big 12 teams in their bowl games. I am just so frustrated. How are we 5-5 and lose to the Bears? Weren't we the team to hand the Monster's of the Midway their ONLY loss in 1985. I want another great quarterback like Dan... I am just so fed up with Ched P., Chad H., Tyler T. (who as someone said was the real deal). THEY ALL SUCK!!!!! Tony Sparano why are you holding on to these QBs who can't even manage to score. I'll grant the Bears have a great D with Urlacher, but why are you getting rid of the good, promising QBs like Pat White(not even give him a real chance) and then cut him for the likes of Tyler Thigpen whose passing arm looks marginally better than a Mike Tomzack (not the 85 T-zack the 89 T-zack who stank it up for the Steelers). If the coaching staff continues to make these crappy decisions maybe it's time to start thinking about new coaches. Oh that's right they took our beloved fins from 2-13 to 5-5 .....BRAVO Sparano.... you should be REAL proud
