This is the quick reaction post from today's scrimmage at Dolphins camp.
Bottom line?
I wasn't impressed by anyone other than Jake Long, Cameron Wake and Nolan Carroll. Read the play-by-play and you might understand why. The most impressive wide receiver was Brian Hartline.
Third-team offense versus third-team defense:
Tyler Thigpen is at QB
First down from the 25: Three yard rush by Lex Hilliard

Third down from the 46: Thigpen connects with Patrick Turner for six yards.
First down from the 49: Tristan Davis gains four yards.
Second down from the 49: Nolan Carroll jumps a quick-out, tips the ball and linebacker Charlie Anderson plucks it out of the air for a turnover.
Third down from 40: Thigpen throws an out pattern right to Carroll. He drops the interception.
First down from the 37: Play-action. Jason Allen breaks up a pass to Julius Pruitt in one-on-one coverage.
Second down from the 27:. Handoff to Lex Hilliard loses two yards.
Third down from the 14: Offside defensive line and Thigpen pass to Moore is incomplete.
Second down from the 11 yard line: Pitch to Tristan Davis for a gain of four.
First down from the 7 yard line: Center Andy Hartline fires off a low snap from shotgun and Thigpen misses it. Blame both.
Third down from the five yard line: Bootleg right and Pruitt catches a TD pass in the back corner of the end zone beating Jason Allen.
First-team offense versus first team defense:
first down at the 25 yard line. Deep sideline to Brandon Marshall, who is stumbling through his route. Incomplete. Sean Smith was on the coverage.
Second down from the 35: Inside handoff to Ronnie Brown for two yards.
Third down from the 46 yard line: Henne thrwos in the middle of the field to Marshall who is cutting across right to left. Ball goes through his hands.
First down from 42: Screen play, Smelled out by the defense and Henne throws it into the ground.
Second down from the 38: Counter play to Ricky williams pops open on the left side for six or seven yards.
Third down from the 24: Henne looks deep to Marshall, checks down to Polite, who is popped immediately by Will Allen. Jake Long one on one vs Misi eats the rookie up.
First down from the 28: No one open downfield. Outlet throw to Ronnie Brown for 5 yards.
First down from the 12 yard line: Pass play, false start on Kory Sperry who still cannot block Cam Wake. Sack for Wake.
Second down from the eight yard line: Handoff to Ricky Williams for two yards.
Third down from the 7 yard line: Three wide with Bess in the slot and Marshall and Hartline outside. Henne fires to Bess who is covered by Bell. Bell gets closer to catching the ball than Bess.
Carpenter misses a 36-yard field goal.
Carpenter misses a 39-yard field goal.
Carpenter then misses from 41.
Third team offense versus third-team defense with Pat White at QB
First down from the 25: Completion from White to Joey Haynos coming across the middle.

First down from the 25 yard line: Henne low pass, incomplete.
Second down from the 35. Shotgun. Short out pass to Brandon Marshall is complete, he then slips under Jason Allen for YAC.
Third down from the 45: Henne throws a 9 route, Marshall is running a deep out. Ball falls harmlessly incomplete.
Third down from the 48 yard line. In-cut to Marshall who is defended by Allen. Incomplete
First down from the 39 yard line: Hartline back shoulder against Will Allen for a 14 yard gain.
Second down from the 29 yard line: Short out to Brandon Marshall. He's open. He catches it, Will Allen bumps him and Marshall drops it. Got to catch that!
Third down from the 26 yard line: Sack for Charles Grant.

First down from the 25 yard line: Allen comes on a corner blitz. Pennington throws to Marshall who is uncovered for a 12 yard gain.
Second down from the 40 yard line: Inside handoff to Hilliard gains 3 yards.
First down from the 44: Sack by Charles Grant. Pennington got the ball off but in a real game he would have been picking himself off the ground.
Third down from the 49: Pennington completion to Julius Pruitt.
First down from the 45: Koa Misi sack vs David Martin pass protection. (Smith enters game.)
Third down from the 33: Shotgun: Cornerback blitz by Sean Smith. Sack in a real game.

First team offense vs first team defense:
First down from the 30: Henne looks left and deep to Bess who is covered. Check down to Brown.
Second down from the 45: Handoff to Brown gains 3 yards.
Third down from the 50: No one open! NO ONE OPEN! Henne pulls it down and play is over.
Third down from the 41: Marshall on a crossing pattern gains five yards.
First down from the 37: Henne quick pass to Hartline for 8 yards. Long versus Jared Odrick battle goes to Long.
Second down from the 27: Henne quick pass to Fasano for five yards. Long and Ricky Williams double-team Cameron Wake. Stuffed him.
Third down from the 25: Free safety blitz! Long recognizes it pre-snap and picks up Chris Clemons. Henne completes a three yard pass to Fasano.
First down from the 12: Henne runs out of time and must call time out. Not good.
First down from the 12: Trips right. Cameron Wake gets a sack verus Long. Henne throws the ball anyway and completes to John Nalbone. I love the Wake versus Long battle. Classic.

I was able to remotely access Aloco's Capslock key and deactivate it for a short time but Aloco was then able to circumvent my Capslock key hack and return to active Capslock.

Lively discussion tonight...what happened with NJ at SS to get him bounced?
Posted by: cocoajoe | August 07, 2010 at 08:12 PM
Cocoa There was a post somebody copied here on last night's blog. It said something about NJ and ocala bob getting hacked by a guy named Chris who is someone of authority at the SS.
Funny that those two have not posted at all since the time of that message.

Pat White actually looked good, Thigpen looked bad. As badly as some people want Pat White gone, he will be given a chance to succeed and I would like to see the kid get that chance.
White has more upside than Thigpen, he should be given a chance to see if he can progress.

The Play At Practice Seems Very Ho Hum
Posted by: dishpan | August 07, 2010 at 08:42 PM
All that means is the personal attacks will increase over here cause now NJ will be spending his time over here making us misurable!

Posted by: dishpan | August 07, 2010 at 09:11 PM
Dishpan,
I can understand why it would be "Ho-Hum as you put it. The defense not being allowed to do anything more then lay hand on the QB, and WR trying to get out of the whole thing with both knee's still in decent shape will drop the level of play dramatically. It sounds like there were some nice exchanges between Wake and Jake. That makes sense, Jake is a top five NFL LT and Wake I still believe will show himself to be an elite pass rush specialist (and a fair run/pass defender). Cobbs taking a hammy tweak may be the best ting that happened for that guy. He is always 100% full blast and it may keep him healthy until the season starts. Timing was off in the pass offense, that will improve, it is only week #2.

ALoco that is admirable to welcome NJ back. But he is like an insane person, how do you handle someone like that. He keeps repeating the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. I guess you keep him in an institution.
Posted by: The Cuban Assassin | August 07, 2010 at 09:32 PM
Aloco,
You are correct as far as I am concerned. It would be great as fan for us all to hear about these guys doing great and amazing plays... what will it be worth if Marshall leaves the practice field on a golf cart? I'll take 100 crappy scrimmages for 16 good regular season games any day.
I have to take the "Allen Iverson" view... "Its Practice"... You know?..."Practice"... Ya'll talkin' about...PRACTICE???"
Does sound to me like Thigpen has taken a regression and Pat had a nice day...? May be a Anomaly... or it may be Pat is starting to "Get it"... I keep oping the Kid finds his feet.
NOTHING... said about Dansby... I don't like that. Maybe he is just doing his job and noone notices? Maybe Armando did not write it down... maybe he was slacking and he is to big to call him on it?.. I would like to hear something.. Anything. He'll be okay... just want to hear the progress, ya know?

CUBAN ASSASSIN, LET'S BE AWARE OF WHAT WE ARE SAYING .HE'S A GREAT GUY .LETS PUT THE PAST BEHIND US AND WELCOME HIM AND INCOURGE HIM TO POST W/HIS NAME NJ PHIN FAN .IF THE SS DENYS HIM TO POST ARMANDO WILL NOT B/C ARMANDO WELCOMES EVERY ONE .
P.S...WE ALL MAKE MISTAKES ...I SOUND LIKE THE GHANDI .

I don't know anyone, "including myself" who has not engaged in an argument or a personal altercation on this or any another Blog that they don't regret or would not like to be able to take back. Much of it is pride, ya know? People like to be right, even when being right is not that big of a deal. I will say it a 1,000 times, the only way to be able to keep this blog "The Home Town Blog", The MIAMI BLOG!!!.... the way we all want it is for people to not take this shyt personally. As soon as it get personal it is over for making sense and all the "Insanity" Assassin talks about gets in people's head. Bottom line, You don't HAVE to be right. If you need another to agree with you... Then you are not convinced of what you are saying to begin with. People have a right to an opinion... let um have it.

Some of you guys have very short memories. The last two years we have started the season 0-3. Everyone was rightfully upset because our team has not been prepared coming out of training camp. Now some of you are upset because of a few injuries and suggesting we dial it back. Can't have it both ways people. This team cannot start 0-3 again. The past two years has shown out training camps have been deficient in preparing this team for the season. Let the coaches do their jobs.
Posted by: bobbyd12 | August 07, 2010 at 09:55 PM
YES BOBBY12BUT IF YOU LOOSE HENNE OR MARSHALL YOU ARE GOING TO START 0-8 .
Posted by: ALoco | August 07, 2010 at 09:57 PM
Bobby is right about both ways. Phins have to get out to a 3 and 1 for the first four games, the way I see it. Very doable.
Derek, I was just pointing out stuff I read about you know who. The proof is in the posts dude. All you gotta do is read them and laugh, sad.

nice to get reports from some one there. seriously armuno and omar both have a chip on their shoulder about pat white! omar who wasn't even at the scrimmage said this about white. "Pat White had a respectable day. I didn't see it for myself, but I'm told he didn't soil his diaper during the scrimmage."
what kind of crap is that?

Derek, the info on Dansby is available on another site ... he was active ...
when the Fins signed him, I watched most of the Cardinals games, courtesy of NFL Rewind ... and one thing stood out like a sore thumb ...
on most of the passing plays, Dansby would turn his hips and head towards the safety area ... he spent most of his time during passing plays in the back third of the field ... very athletic and fast ...
I thought that perhaps what I was watching was peculiar to the Arizona defens, as I have not seen Dolphin linebackers take those kind of "drops; however, today's report said Carlos was spending time back with the safeties, telling me that Nolan is going to include what Dansby does best in his aggressive defense ...
very cool ....

BobbyD12,
I agree that Miami should not go into another season with a 0-3 start. While it would not be the end of life as we know it, it makes for a crappy October if you break a 2 & 2 for that month. Backing it off is not what I was really eluding to. In fact, I feel that in some area's Miami needs to keep the grind on full blast. The caution I am more or less advising is for our receivers and DB's to not be doing "Circus Catches" and "Smear the Queer" moves. NO ONE doubts that Marshall can catch 100 balls. But thinking if he misses a few in "PRACTICE" places us in deep do-do leads to guys getting hurt by laying it out too far.
While I agree with you that Miami must keep the pressure on the younger guys and keep the Vets active, would you not agree that guys like Marshall, Hartline, Bess, Henne, Long, Brown & Williams and other "Franchise" type players are not better served by being more cautious practicing then while in a regular season game? Should we not keep a guys like Marshall out for 2 or 3 afternoon practices a week just to preserve the investment? It sure would suck to be looking at a "Elvis Dumervile" situation in Miami, don't you agree?

Derek, Gauging Only From The Reports, Seems Like Nothing Of Note Stood Out To All Watching Beyond Jake And Wake. Certainly, It Is Very, Very Early.

Thank you very much for the report on Dansby. I will seek report on alternative site you spoke of. Of all the FA Miami went after tis season he was the one I really wanted Miami to have the mst. I feel on Defense there was no other player who could bring as much as fast as Dansby could. I am really hoping I was right, from what Coach Tony has said in his Media talks he has been awesome.
dishpan,
I sometimes just wonder if it is the caliber of their play that draws so much attention rather then the lack of others. I have a feeling by years end Wake will be a well known name in the league and Jake will be on the way to another pro bowl.

DEREK4DOLPHINS, HOW YOU KNOW A WOMAN LOVES YOU TO DEATH WITHOUT SAYING A WORD ?
Posted by: ALoco | August 07, 2010 at 10:43 PM
from the NY Daily News:
"A day after Rex Ryan scribbled "Soon to be champs" on ESPN's training camp tour bus, the most confident coach on the planet backed up the Super Bowl bravado with, well, more Super Bowl bravado......
"The first step is that if you don't believe in yourself, your team darn sure won't," Ryan said. "I'm not apologizing. I just know what's going to happen. My crystal ball, I'm seeing a Super Bowl trophy in there. I could be wrong. But that's what I see."
What he didn't say was that Coach Sparano was holding the trophy!
btw, he's perfect in NY ...

REX RYAN TRYING TO MATCH THE IQ OF HIS PLAYERS
Posted by: ALoco | August 07, 2010 at 10:46 PM
i love hearing about this scrimmage, especially after yesterday. a few people, you know who you are, argue how great thigpen is and how terrible white is with me. some one cough cuban cough, said thigpen ad a better pass than penne. well, one QB was 25% with the only int. must have been white? wait, it wasn't?? oh then pene with his sore arm? no?? one qb was 4-16, hard to believe but it was the great tyler thigpen!! depending on what paper you read white had the pass of the day, a 15 yard laser to wallace for a long gain, one paper said TD. armundo said a 14 yard gain. but i trust NOTHING armundo says about white!! white must have snubbed him or banged his old lady because he clearly hates white. omar isn't much better with white hate! his quote "Pat White had a respectable day. I didn't see it for myself, but I'm told he didn't soil his diaper during the scrimmage."
so please can the people who live in florida and go to camp keep me informed ? these two "reporters" are more like bloggers!! reporters report fact, bloggers give opinions. can both these papers hire at least one reporter?? you got way to many bloggers!!

lewD,
I have never seen a coach set themselves up to be "Crucified" by the New York Media should they fail. It will be relentless and ruthless clowning on Rex for the rest of his career should the team he is coaching fall short. Yeah, he will go down in "Joe Namath" history if right, But... uhhhh...mmmmm...weelllll... I just don't think so.

Derek, the "Fins are going to take it to NY again this year .... will Miami win the division? I don't know ... NE w/Brady is special .... but NY???? I too think they are in for a serious fall and it will be fun to watch and hear the finger pointing, excuse making and back-stabbing that will ensue ... it's going to be a very fun year for Dolphin fans ...

Aloco, In a honest answer to your question...
"DEREK4DOLPHINS, HOW YOU KNOW A WOMAN LOVES YOU TO DEATH WITHOUT SAYING A WORD"?
I will only say this without much conversation about it, I have loved someone very very much, and one day out on the Turnpike, I watched her close her eyes for the last time because a 16 year old thought it was fun to go 100+ in his little Honda Civic with bad tires.
So, to answer your question, Yes, I do know ow much a woman can love me... without her even saying a word.
Does that help?
Posted by: Derek4Dolphins | August 07, 2010 at 10:59 PM
more from that same Ryan interview:
"He also dismissed the notion that he should keep his mouth shut until the Jets actually win the Super Bowl, citing his family's success. (too funny)
Ryan won a Super Bowl as an ass-istant with the Ravens. His father, Buddy, won a pair of Super Bowls as an ass-istant as well. (that's the Jets for ya')
"I don't care if people don't like it or whatever (and say), 'Just shut up and win something,'" Ryan said. "I've won a lot more than that person writing it. I can promise you that. I've been there. My family's been to a bunch of these things. I know how to get there."
that's correct Rex, take I-95 South until you hit I-10 and head west directly into Dallas ... maybe Sparano will acknowledge you ....
Posted by: lewD | August 07, 2010 at 10:59 PM
Derek, by giving a special few days off as you suggest you have the potential for a divided clubhouse. I realize no one wants a Dumervil situation in Miami but your looking at a team sport played by men. Honestly, if it was up to me I wouldn't have these guys out at 2:00 pm in the dead heat of the day scrimmaging or practicing. Mr. Ross got his wish, no 1:00 pm early starts till mid October so why does this team need to practice during hottest part of day? Injuries occur when you get worn down and tired, so for me the answer would be better practice times.

I went back and read my competitor’s “play by play” from this unofficial scrimmage
I use binoculars — not sure about my competitor
My competitor credits Cam Wake with a sack, for instance, that I don’t. Another time I gave Lionel Dotson a sack on a play that he has going for a 28-yard completion
My competitor completely leaves out an ENTIRE PAT WHITE SERIES! Like the poor kid hasn’t been through enough, you know?
there must be something in the water at SS!
the fins were not the only team competing out there?
very low class comments from an SS employee!

lewD, Thank you, I am only one person to have suffered loss... I am nothing new or special. She was a cool lady.
Bobbyd12,
No, the last thing Miami needs is any sort of clubhouse division. That would be just what we don't need with all of these Rookies and young players around. I'll be honest, I get so freaking uptight every time I check the news after practice waiting on a shoe to drop with a franchise guy. Merling had a note of "Karma" to it and I think Sheets was a "Practice Squad" Keep at best since Miami already has 6 or 7 RB's on the roster. I know I'm a "Nervous Knelly" I just hate the idea of screwing up the damn season before it starts. Yet the players do need the work... tough call inded.
