Bill Parcells is stepping back from Dolphins control

Bill Parcells is stepping back.

Effecitive immediately general manager Jeff Ireland will assume full control over all decisions pertaining to Miami Dolphins football. This according to a short, carefully worded statement just out from the Dolphins.

In other words, Parcells has given full personnel control to Ireland effective immediately as he previously had given Tony Sparano full coaching control. And, yes, this is clearly a first and important step signaling Parcells' intention to eventually depart the organization.

This was his plan all along and he has decided to implement it at this time.

The full statement from the Dolphins reads as follows: "Effective immediately, Jeff Ireland will assume full control over all aspects and decisions in regard to the Miami Dolphin football team and support staff. This was the intent of the structure put in place in the past. Bill Parcells will remain with the club on a daily consultant basis."

Parcells has effectively taken the training wheels off of Ireland, an eventuality he had been planning when he first took over as Dolphins football czar in 2008 but has pushed harder the last few months.

An example of that happened in the offseason when the Dolphins first learned that defensive end Phillip Merling had torn his Achilles' tendon while working out on his own. Ireland called Parcells in his upstate New York home and asked what the team should do.

Parcells basically said, "You want me to tell you what we're going to do? You tell me what we're going to do."

The two men agreed to hang up, give Ireland a chance to study the situation overnight and propose solutions the following morning. The next morning Ireland called back and told Parcells his plan included signing "bridge" free agents on the market.

Parcells approved that plan -- much like a consultant might -- and Ireland put it to work, signing Charles Grant and Marques Douglas.

That was clear indication that Parcells wanted Ireland to fend for himself, think for himself, control the fate of the team ... himself.

The reasons Parcells has taken this step back from control of the team now is uncertain. The timing intrigues. Clearly, he didn't want to leave the team altogether at this time -- not days before the start of the 2010 season.

That would cause an earthquake within the organization that could distract and hurt Miami's chances on Sunday against the Buffalo Bills. What effect this announcement and tomorrow's media frenzy that it will cause within the lockerroom is is unclear.

What is clear is that Parcells is backing away and intends to do so further very soon. He is signed through the 2011 season but is free to leave at any time and still collect his salary, according to a source familiar with his contract details.

So this partial step has happened now. It is possible, even likely, Parcells' full disconnect from the Dolphins will happen before the 2011 season dawns, according to a club source.

Parcells is the only one who really can answer when he intends to leave the organization altogether. He does not typically speak to local media.

He does typically work long hours. He has not missed any Dolphins practice this training camp and preseason. Starting every December he locks himself in his office and studies tape of every college player that will become draft eligible.

Until now, Ireland has worn the mantle of general manager, but every personnel move has gone through Parcells. Every player Miami has drafted or signed has passed under the Parcells microscope.

It is unclear if that will be the case going forward.

It is more likely that Parcells will handle Ireland as he has handled Sparano. Parcells makes himself available to Sparano for advice but not necessarily consent. There have been a handful of incidents that Parcells has not agreed how Sparano has handled the team -- one among them benching of a player in the last two years for disciplinary reasons.

But Parcells has never over-ruled Sparano. He had previously disagreed with and over-ruled Ireland. That is likely to change. He is now apparently more likely to give his advice and allow Ireland to make his own decision.

And by the time the 2010 season is over, Parcells will make his own decision that no one else will have the ability to alter -- whether and how he will leave the Dolphins altogether.

everyone relax!!! miami is still 11-5 worthy.
remain calm,
take a chilling tablet.

Bill Cowher has stated numerous times his dream is to coach the Giants, which is exactly where he is going next year. Some of you need to actually follow football on occasion. Dolphins wil have a great year and Parcells, Ireland and Sparano will all be here next yeat. Get used to it.

Bobby,

I thought you were down on the fact that the Jets had picked up Turner. Were you just mocking others on here? He was a horrible fit for them anyways. Big and slow and can't play special teams. How was he going to play ahead of Holmes or Cotchery or Edwards? And I wouldn't be surprised if they re-sign Coles.

Craig M, some idiot spent the day posting in my name the other day. I could care less where Turner goes. He runs bad routes and is inconsistent.

Chuckie has been gushing about the Dolphins on TV for two years... He's bucking for the job.

Peterson is an idiot who's committed to mediocrity.

Cowher could be the savior but who knows if he can be a GM as well - because that's what he wants.

What we do know is that this team is better than it was under Saban and Cam, but still isn't very good. Two starting caliber RBs will be gone next year (unless they pony up for Ronnie). BMarsh is the only really, really good WR on the team, the others are mediocre. I'm certainly not sold on Henne and I believe Thigpen is better all around so I'll take him as a core guy. Jake Long is the only superior O-Lineman and Carey may be the only other better than middling guy out there. Randy Starks is the only really good D-Lineman. Dansby and Wake are the only really good LBs. Vontae the only decent CB, Bell (getting old) the only decent S.

So that's it: Thigpen/Henne (maybe - 1/2 a core player credit), BMarsh, Long, Carey, Ronnie (if healthy and re-signed; Ricky is gone without Parcells to persuade him) on offense: 4.5 core players on offense.

Starks, Dansby, Wake, Davis, Bell (1/2 for him). That's 4.5 on D.

A few not shabby backups on the team.

Okay, that's a decent foundation. Thanks Bill.

Let's face it, Ireland is a tosser as is Coach Pom-Pom. Chuckie, the Chin or even Nolan can build on that foundation. Still an awful lot of work to do. Nobody will be able to help if Peterson comes in.

Hopefully a rook or two will work outand add to the foundation.

Sorry Bobby.....always takes some clown to screw things up for everyone else.

I feel the same way about Turner. He's got no future in this league. Wasted pick.

Mserrania,

You should really stop typing and back away from the bar...the more you type the more igonorant you sound.

for those of you who only watch ESPN highlights and not actual football.

Bill Cowher won 1 SB in 10 years. It took bill Cowher 10 Years to win that SB.

Had he been a Dolphin Coach he would never have won a SB because you fickle fans would have run him out of town before the first game of his 3rd season. One year removed from AFC East champs,

So shut up about Cowher because if he didn't win a Super Bowl in his first season you fakes would look for the next flashy coach's nuts to ride.

Give me a break!

Never have I seen fans jump ship before the start of a season....this is some crazy sht.

No wonder Ricky Williams went off....He must have to listen to you cry babies all the time.

Kris,

You make a lot of good points. Let's see how things look after the first game.

What's the news here - this is exactly what they said would happen.

The thing that kills me about those that post here is that every good move has been attributed to Parcells and every shitty move attributed to Ireland.

Guys, Parcells has been riding the ship on every decision, but slowly letting Ireland take the wheel. BP must now feel that Ireland is ready to take over the decision making. That is a good thing. Again, Parcells is not a God, but I sure as hell trust his opinion RE: Footbal over anyone on this blog or in the media.. in fact, over most NFL people too. He may not always get along with management and owners, but the guy has repeatedly built winners and has paved the way here too.

It is easier to take a mediocre team and build it up than to take a team in complete shambles and rebuild... each mistake in the second scenario is a problem because you NEED these new guys to contribute, cause you were working with nothing.

This has never been a 1 yr project.. and I WILL NOT write off the rookies this year as busts before they play a single game.

Let this defense play together a while and they will start to shine... I just hope they can withstand the tough schedule we start with...

First of all. i can express my opinion just as anyone else. its certainly a possibility with an owner who wants to win now. this clasic parcells. historically he has a crappy 3rd year. now he sets up his exit. now he will be leaving because he can. as for this season we should have a dominant team and i believe in Sparano.

If we can go 1-1 that would be a good start. win this week and play well v. Vikings would be huge.

This Ship Cant Sink! its unsinkable...
Parcells is Gone???
ICEBERG, Right Ahead!!!!!

Dam-n, Kris is all over it AND he is right. I have never been a NFL GM and I would guess no one else here has either. To many of you base ur opinions on 4 practice games and a players name. I questioned the Martin move but the team said he wasnt the same guy as 08 and Nalbone has improved. Since no on here sits in that practice bubble I trust the guys who have done this for a living. If we end up 7-9 or worse, then there is a problem. This team will have a really good year I believe. Lwt em play

It sounds to me like Parcells was fired. I expect Tony Dungee and/or John Gruden to join organization soon.

IN ANY CASE I'M GOING TO ENJOY EVERY SNAP CHAD HENNE TAKES REGARDLESS OF THE FINAL SCORE.

hahahaha LMAO at the ines whi werw bitchn and moan about Turner going to the Jets and how we were dymb for letting him go.

oh no now he's gonna give away all our secrets blah blah blah hahaha

looks like our staf actual does know what their doing.

damn its hard to type on this thing without th auto correction.

I love when a pen is swells in my mouth

Yea, Parcells was fired, even though this is what they said would happen when he took this job. Even though he will be at practice DAILY. Yea, thats it he was fired. Still as dumb as last year. Some things dont change

Test and I are going to 69 each other now

this is what we know jimmy jam? are this is what you know? please speak for yourself not others

While the jury is still out on Sparano, it isn't on Cowher and Gruden, and neither impresses me. Gruden won the SP with Dungy's team. Dungy would have won it too had he stayed one more season. Cowher if anything under acheived with the talent he had. And if you watch again Cowhers only SB and listen now to the refs confession he made a FEW bad calls that influenced the outcome, he didn't really win that SB, the refs handed it to him.

Parcells wasn't fired and he didn't jump off a sinking ship. Bill Parcells did what he always does. He builds a team up and it's talent and then he leaves. He is older now so his job in Miami isn't quite done but he did a very good job. He turned around a 1-15 team. He brought in his type of players the Penningtons, Jason Ferg, Akin Ayodele, Fasano and so on. These guys weren't stars and none except for maybe Fasano will play a significant role but give Parcells his credit. He whiffed on draft picks and signings but what GM/football operations personel doesn't.

I know Parcell's relationship with Ireland.
I know Parcell's relationship with Sporano.
I don't have a clue as too Ireland and Sporano's relationship.

Some of you guys clamoring for a Head Coaching change should research that????

The guy who says Parcells was fired is an idiot. Parcells wouldn't still be involved with this team if he was fired. This is no different than what has been discussed since he came to Miami. Very likely he will step away from the team either during or after the season. This has been planned from day one. It's what Parcells does.

Mike - I was speaking for my three distinct personalities :-)

Please tell the three of us what you know...

This is the third season under this regime. I am not enamored of Ireland at all (anyone who asks that sort of question of a kid has no way back into my good books; but I also question his personnel decisions - again we will see how he does without Bill). Sparano I really like, I really do. I think he can win and make good decisions and go for field goals, I really think. Seriously, though, I do like the guy. For me, the jury's out on whether he is/can be a decent head coach. I actually like his enthusiasm despite my Pom-Pom jab.

As a fan, I am entitled to be critical and am also entitled to be a cheerleader. I will be cheering for my team for the whole season, 16-0 or 0-16. But that doesn't mean I won't voice my opinion her and in other places. There may be nothing worse to some than people who "have never been a GM" being critical, but there isn't much worse to me than someone saying I can't voice my opinion in a public blog - be it positive or negative. To say that everyone here must be an out and out cheerleader and have nothing negative to say is anti-American.

Test is like a Twinkie, I love all his man cream when I suk hard

Bill Parcell's plan all along was to announce that he, the President and one of the biggest names in Football, was stepping down 5 days before HIS Troops kick off a new season?

His plan was to pump up the team by bailing out at the last second?
They always said Bill knew how to get into his players heads but D_MN.

There was more to this. I think Kris and Allstar have come the closest so far.

Jake long was Parcell's flagship Pro Bowl draft pick. Tony F_cked up. We brought McQuistan back from Dallas with us.

The 53 man cut was apparently going well. The only thing that could be considered slightly controversial was cutting last years 2nd and 3rd round picks.
Then suddenly a peculiar "purge and churn" at the bottom of the roster.
Finally culminating with this official announcement: Effecitive immediately general manager Jeff Ireland will assume full control over all decisions pertaining to Miami Dolphins football.

Look for the clue's! Look for telltale signs! Follow the money!
This sounds to me like a conspiracy. A Coup D' Etat if you will.
This sounds like a job for that Mysterious Tin-Foil Helmetted Caped Crusader.
The ONE, the ONLY, that crazy Wizard we all love to hate:

HOLMES!!!!

PS: Bill, I don't care what the story is, you suck big time for making this announcement at this time.

All that cool stuff said, if this team does worse than 8-8 this year, with an easier schedule than last, there needs to be some serious review by Mr. Ross.

I hope he stays on as consultant for at least a couple of more years.

Jimmy Jam, in your earlier post, you kinda had split personalities. You said the team wasn't very good, and then you listed all the good or somewhat good players on the team, and that was like 1/2 the starters (and I thought your analysis was great, totally agreed, except I'm higher on Henne than you are). So 5 players on offense and defense are in your core players. That's a team buddy. That's a nucleus. That's a group you can play with, win with, build around. I think you're not as down on the team as you think you are. Reread your post, it was pretty optimistic (I'm thinking about putting that on my wall as inspiration this year).

Odinseye, disagree with ya. The 53 man roster is set, the practice squad is set. Parcells doesnt go to any away games during the season. He will still be a daily consultant. Omce seasom starts im 5 days no one will be talking about Parcls. This was as good of time as any in my opinion.

This is the perfect time for a personel annoucement.

There isn't much personnel work going on right now.. its not free agency or draft time... the roster is set except for shuffling of the lower part of the 53... its the perfect time to make the move..

I just hope he talked to the players and let them know before it became public.

focus on beating the bills and nothing else. Everything else will take care of itself.

DC - haha, you're right. I wasn't kidding about the personalities!

I do feel pretty good about that nucleus - I was serious in saying "Thanks, Bill." I think my assessment as "not being very good" has more to do with the other players than the core ones I named. FS is a serious, serious concern (that appeaars to have been blown with the non-signing of Clark), CB is too (unless Sean turns the corner). I like Starks a whole lot better as a DE than an NT, but he is a heck of a player. I am not sold on the other half of our LB corps at all and the remainder of our D-Line is very suspect (again. I can't sit here and judge rookies - lets see how they develop). On offense the interior line is only adequate (I love Incognito's Kevin Donnelly type attitude though), the RBs are excellent for THIS year, the TEs are not IMO. From the #2 WR on down are only adequate. Our starters all need to be above adequate.

I hope you're right about Henne, but I would be happy with Thigpen - I think he's pretty special.

I think if Ireland has to call to ask about what to do with Merling, he's got a lot of learning to do. I hope Bill is really available for guidance. The only thing that scares me about moving on from Ireland is that Petersen would be next and he has more downside.

I am an ex ten year season ticket holder, the Fins have offered no hope since JJ was coach. I am sick of the Dolphins management and there non-performance on the field. The new owner does noting for me with his stupid celeabrty partial owners give me a break. Thank god I grew up in Maryland so I have a real football team I can root for " GO RAVENS " and of course I will be as I have been for 20 years the real class sports team in Miami The Heat :)

Have any of you actually given any thought to Bill's needs in this whole episode (it's not all about you guys). He's 70 yrs. old. His pencil is down the last bit of lead. He can either spend 16 weeks watching a bunch of "schweaty balls" (SNL with Alec Baldwin), or he can tap some sexy Spanish mamacita with more curves than a cul-de-sac. I mean, it's South Florida for Christ's sakes. He's looking at Serena Williams waltz up to his box in her tennis skirt, and yeah, he notices she's not wearing socks. Have you seen Serena's ankles? Give the guy a break. Let him enjoy his last few years the way we all would like to: sitting in a hot tub, watching Scarlet Johanssen do her best impression of a bobblehead. Get some Bill, then chill out with Ricky and puff that wacky tobaccy. THAT'S LIVING!!!

PJ, I heard if you rev your engine really loud, with the car in the garage with the door down, it's really cool. Don't stop, keep doing it man. Just until you go unconscious, you tool. Get off this blog and go to the Gavens blog, it's on the Jizz network: eatme@fagola.net.

You took the crown back for head re-tar-d test.
Grats fake dolphin fan

Miami 10-6
New England - 10-6
New York - 8-8
Buffalo 4-12

Miami will be fine. I expect to see you all on the bandwagon again soon enough and then off again when they lose. Such fair weather fans.

New England still had Brady, Moss and Belichick. They will be one dimensional and struggle to find a running game. Their defense is going to struggle with no D-Line depth, average linebackers and a young secondary.

New York will be great on defense and the running game will not be as dominant without Thomas Jones. LT is washed up. He has flashes in the preseason and will wear down early in the season. Shonn Green isn't Thomas Jones. And Sanchez is the most over hyped and over rated player in recent memory.

The Bills ehhh. They switched a cover 2 personel to a 3-4 defense and they have Trent Edwards at QB. Enough said!

PJ, your a bandwagon jumping phony. Glad ur not a season ticket holder anymore, sitting in the same Stadium with a phony fan such as you would make anyone wanna puke

PJ loves boners.

What kind of name is pj anyway?

PJ is actually short for Piece of Junk

Sorry, my bad, PJ is actually French for: face like a dimpled ass (but his boyfriend just calls him PeePee for short).

Come on Dolphans! this is not the end of the world for Fins Nation. we've survived Don Shula's demise and the other pathetic coaches. Besides, Parcells is not going anywhere; he's still the team's consultant.

I like what Ireland has done so far. All this concludes that he was the one that made the decision of letting go Pat White and Patrick Turner.. Kudos to Ireland...

When Wayne went and hired Parcells, he tried to get him to be the head coach. Bill told him "No, I'm retired from coaching.". So, Wayne talked him into being VP of Operations and hiring a GM and coach. He held Sparano's hand for a while then Ireland's. Now, they're on their own and he's kicked back as a "consultant". He hasn't gone anywhere! He did what he said he'd do. Took a really bad franchise and rebuilt it so that it's better than average!
Now, that doesn't mean we're "Tuna-free Dolphins". He's just in the background if they need his expertise. Maybe he'll do Dancing with the Stars like JT did. NOT! Lol. C'mon the guy's ffreaking 70 years old!

is bobby living in a cave. parcells is gone, dont care what title they gave him now. course hes on the payroll robbing ross

Hey Bill how stupid can one person fu@kin be?? DAILY consultant, he will be at practice Fu@kin daily. Ate you really that ignorant?

Parcells leaving his position and stepping aside is no big mystery, and has nothing to do with whether the Dolphins will be good or bad this season. He signed a four year deal, and he is in year three of it, and guess what folks, there will be no NFL next year. When the Super Bowl is over, the CBA expires, the league will lock the players out and there will be a work stoppage next year that could, and probably will wipe out the majority of next year. That means no draft, no mini-camp, no free agency, no work-outs, no training camp, and no pre-season and it will be long and bloody. BANK ON IT, THERE IS NO FOOTBALL NEXT YEAR. This upcoming labor strike is going to be one of the worst in pro sports history, so Parcells will have nothing to do anyway, while the owners and players fight it out and believe me they will fight it out. All he had left to do during this season was consult anyway and watch the games which he will continue to do, and next year is toast so that is why he announced it now. The media doesn't want to talk about the strike because it's their worst nightmare, and they are praying it will not happen, because they lose money and guys like Armando will have to cover the Marlins and Panthers because the NBA is going on strike next year too. Everybody is going to lose money next year, and they will not settle this without blood being spilt, so Parcells knows that the last year of his contract he doesn't have to worry about, because there will be no football. In America, if we don't like the news we go into denial about it, and pretend that it doesn't exist because we don't want to deal with the reality of things, but the fact is, the NFL is toast next year. The economy is catching up with pro sports and they are not immune from it anymore.

tuna is a real smart man

someone posted "what a joke this team has been over the past decade." Since Shula was forced out the team has had no continuity - no steady leadership with players coming and going like a revolving door. Look at what a joke the coaching staff has been with the exception of a few specialty coaches. Give me a break - the lack of leadership and the incongruancy - poor draft picks team spirit have doomed this once great organization. Right now I think this OC should go, he stalls drives with the now ineffective gadget plays. The wild cat - it's over let it die

The best news for the Dolphins is the exit of Moss from the Patriots.
Temporary insanity afflicts many general managers and coaches, and normally they wait a while for the smoke to clear before they act.
This may seem like a good idea to the Patriots and everyone should humor them into believing they are the geniuses in the division.

anyone who beleives henne is our future is in for bad news he is the best your going to see unless he gets traded than he will get better because he will be scared of not being a starter!! look people we have great team now we have awsome players we need a leader to take control i say put in pennington lets go to the playoffs this year don;t know if you all see it but i been a fan for 40 yrs and i see parcells tired of it in miami he is leaving i said that last week now if henne stays in miami will lose half thier games this year and than after that ross will be wanting a big quik fix he will fire the coach and bring in someone like cower and try to bring in a big name qb but by next year we will be losing some big players like ricky and maybe ronnie and than we are rebuilding again for next year? look i want a good season now and i say the only way is to give pennington control and i bet it all on him he will put the ball in the hands of marshall and hartine and bess all day long we have great wepons 2 major runners and 3 awsome catchers and 4 major blockers? we just need a leader and acurate QB that knows how to fake and pass henne got the keys to the corvett before he learned to drive we should have him watching fromj bench just like rogers did in green bay or like brady learned in new englend look i know i would rather give pennington the ball he proved he can takes us to playoffs did you all forget the team he won the division with?he can win now people beleive in him!!

everyone dogs out pennington? he came in and took the dolphins to a division win his first year we were already a week into the season he didnt even know any of our plays or anyone on the team he was tossed into a team that was hating him up till the big trade with farve that let us get him we wier the worst team in history the year befor we were going through a lot and he came in and he took a medioker team to a division win not only that but the win was against his old team on thier feild? he is a true winner in every sence i just don;t get it we finally get great cachers and we put in a want to be qb ? he will maybe get better but not going to take us anywhere now? i say give pennington the ball lets get back in this thing and whip some he will whare out marshall and bess /hartline come on lets quit beleiving in fary tales every year been a fan for 40 yrs and every time we get close they give the ball to the wrong qb? i say penningtopn now playoffs now? dont beleive me? go watch pennington at practic he hits his receivers all day henne tells you who is getting the ball by the way he leads with his shoulder?he can;t fool a rodeo clown? get some fins

well i remember when we had a new promise every year or two with everyone hell remember the mess sabin left us in? i think the tuna has put us in control of our own destiny he got us on track we won a division the year he took over the problem is henne trade his ass while people still think he is going to get better ? give him to buffalo or the jets i would rather play against him than with him pennington is the way to win this year here and now

Tuna have a nice retirement and take Walden, Carpenter, White and Turner with ya!!! Seeee Yaaa!!! Mediocre job at best. Maybe they are a 8-8 team this year with that tough schedule and with good coaching and draft could go 10-6 next yr if young studs develop, we will know more by week 16.
