Chad Henne versus Jets: Nails

One of the topics that seems to be constantly on the tongue of fans and media is the progress of quarterback Chad Henne.

The topic matters so much this week because Henne faces perhaps one of the best defenses he will see all year this week when Miami plays the Jets. The Jets have the No. 11 total defense in the NFL right now.

They press up front and play zone behind that. They press up front and play Cover 2 behind that.

They come with multiple fronts and multiple pressures.

And against the chaos Henne last season completed 32 of 47 passes (68 percent completion) for 353 yards with three touchdowns and zero interceptions in two games.

Most importantly, Henne was 2-0 against New York.

"Is there anyone else in the league 2-0?" Offensive coordinator Dan Henning asked rhetorically today. "And one of the best games offensively we've offensively here -- in fact, I would go so far as to say the best game we've had -- was last year. I think it was his third start. He played magnificently ... He played a superb game."

Henning continued: "There were times in the game the pressure came on Chad Henne and he did the right thing ... He had a chance to have something bad happen to him and did the right thing to avoid that. And he made some big plays when they were there. And at the end of the second game, although we didn't have a lot of stats, in the fourth quarter we had a drive for a touchdown to put the game where we up by five."

One of the primary goals of the Jets defense is to get in a QB's head. Henning isn't worried about that with Henne.

"I don't know how far Chad is going to go in this game as a quarterback," Henning said. "Now, he has all the tools. He has a tremendous desire to be the best. He is willing to take the pain of discipline rather than accept the pain of regret later. He's willing to do that. He's in this building every night. He looks at every piece of film. He studies. There's nothing frivolous about Chad Henne when it comes to football. I would think it would be tough to get in that guy's head."

[Update: The Dolphins have claimed TE Mickey Shuler Jr. off waivers from the Minnesota Vikings, according to a club source.]

it took the wildcat and two Ginn returns to beat Jets. We'll need help again this weekend too. whichever team wins on turnovers and special teams will win most likely.

It's time to see what Carroll can do on punt returns.

GO DOLPHINS!!!

Henne did play awesome against the Jets last year in that first matchup. That late 3 or 4th down play to Hartline for the first down with the blitz in his face may have been his best throw as a pro.

Dolphin defense must dominate thei jets O. Our O needs to score between 20-30 points. "It's that simple and that complex!" REDSKY has spoken, let it be written, let it be so!

duh

Mark, the point is w Marshall we lead by 7 w Marshal and Jackson we lead by 14 and shutout... Makes me sleep better at night

again if all we are getting rid of is a Merling or Pat White or Patrick Turner and the defense is playing lights out without channing crowder than we wouldn't be losing anything

Duh said it best..DUH!

papoopse, Vjackson is an actual probability for a trade seeing how he is on the trade block. I'm not talking about Madden either so don't bother looking. If he is available why not go after him as we did Marshall and improve the team now where there is a obvious weak link. 2-0 with superb defense not becuz of anything pretty on offense. Marshall is a huge improvement but what happens when we play th eJets with Revis Cromartie and Kyle Wilson later in the season 1 Stud receiver isn't gonna cut it. we need another threat at WR and I don't think its gonna be Hartline, Wallace, or Moore.

true beerphin, true...

im starving, feed the wolf tee shirt?

Think rob in O.C is in jail!err or got married.

I'm not sure if looking into getting V. Jackson is even an option right now. The deadline for that has passed already and since a deal couldn't be worked out in time, he now has to miss 6 games instead of just 4. The rumor is that he's gonna hold-out for the entire season. It's the fault of their stupid GM. So, I'm pretty sure pining for him to be a Dolphin is a wasted effort this year. Ain't gonna happen.
Sooner or later, the Fins are gonna be caught up in a shoot-out game with a high-powered offence and we'll have to make those "chunk yardages" that Sparano talked about. And, it's going to fall on the offence to win the game. Dink-n-dunk and run the ball won't work. Gotta air it out. Sooner or later.

"I don't know how far Chad is going to go in this game as a quarterback," Henning said. That's pathetic! Confidence in those around you can be very conducive to winning. I hope his old @#$ is out of here next year.

Henne is playing scared...scared that if he takes a chance and throws a deep pass and it gets picked off the coaches will be all over him...scared that if he does have interceptions there's a veteran QB behind waiting to take his place. His solution to this is throw dink and dunk passes that won't be picked off.

Usa today has a nice article on the dolphins today! MUST READ!!!!!!!!

Mando,
I am a little concerned as the dolphins seem to be more chirpy this week than the jets who have taken a beaten from this Edwards thing. Im all for the Jets being shut up but somehow they seem less threatening when they are mouthing off then when they are "quiet" or steaming.

Nails? I missed that one, Armando. As in tough as? Hanging by? What? Plz clarify the nails reference.

Just to let everyone know, it's now Fri. We've dissected the last game and advised the team on it's shortcomings. We've all made our voices heard and criticized where need be. But...it's FRIDAY. That means in 2 days our beloved Dolphins will be taking the field in battle. It's now time to circle the wagons and put our game faces on. All the joking, all the friendly banter, all the armchair coaching, NEEDS to get wrapped up over the day.

I'll be monitoring the site for any Benedict Arnolds. Any Debbie Downers. Any "glass-half-empty" types that have nothing better to do than depress everyone else and crap on their team. This isn't Minnesota week, where it's a non-division opponent we only see once every few years. THIS IS THE ULTIMATE BATTLE. Against an ugly foe.

So I'm putting it out there, calling out bill connrs and the like, who want to predict a loss before every game we play. I ain't havin' it. There's a time and place for everything, and now's the time to SUPPORT YOUR TEAM! If not now, when? If not us, who?

If you can't support your team, who's playing a teams it's beaten THREE outta the last four games we've played them in, who's stars are either hurt or worried about legal ramifications, who are coming down, to OUR house, who are coming off a good performance preceded by an absolute joke of a performance (while your team is coming off TWO strong performances), with a QB that wishes he were Chad Henne, on a day where the temperature will be more to YOUR liking than your opponent, if you can't support your team WITH ALL THAT GOING IN YOUR FAVOR, then, I'll just say it, I don't think you "claiming" you're a fan matters even in the slightest. I'm not one to disown fans, I don't like when people don't allow others to put in their 2 cents, but like I said, it's time to pick a side.

I've chosen my side, they'll be in orange. I'll put my name, my reputation, my bloodline, my conscience, my entire body and soul on the line right now and say, CATEGORICALLY, that I predict the Miami Dolphins will be victorious on Sunday night, when the dust settles, and the final whistle is blown. I will continue with that belief from this moment until Sunday, Sept. 26, 8:20pm, and may God help those that stand in my way.

I LOVE THE WAY WE ARE PLAYIN.

WE ARE PLAYIN THAT OLD SCHOOL PUNCH YOU IN THE FACE FOOTBALL.

A BIG POWERFUL O-LINE.A POWER BOWLING BALL FOR A FULL BACK AND 2 POWER RUNNING BACKS.

THE WILLIAMS WALL CAME CRUMBLING DOWN.

AT THE SAME TIME YOU SEE THE SHOTS DOWN FIELD TO LET NFL TEAMS KNOW WE CAN GO DOWN THE FIELD IF WE WANTED.

RICKY AND RONNIE WILL BOTH HAVE A G ON THE GROUND THIS YEAR.

I WAS THE FIRST ON THE JASON ALLEN BAND WAGON. I SAID ALL HE NEED WAS TO SPEND TIME IN ONE SPOT. HE PLAYED TWO GREAT WEEKS.

VONTAE IS GOING TO BE THE BEST COVER CORNER IN THE DIVISION.

I WANT PAUL TO TAKE OVER AT NOSE AND PUT STARKS BACK AT RIGHT AND LANGFORD AT LEFT. ODRICK BACK UP BOTH SIDES.

CROWDER IS A GREAT RUN STUFFER AND THE RUN D WILL BE BETTER WHEN HE COMES BACK.

I STILL STICK WITH WHAT I SAID WHEN THE THREE AMIGOS FIRST CAME TO SOUTH BEACH. THEY WILL NEED THREE YEARS TO BUILD.

WELL THIS IS THE START OF YEAR THREE AND WE ARE LOOKIN GREAT BUT AGAIN ONLY YEAR THREE.

NEXT YEAR IS WHEN WE TAKE OFF NEXT YEAR IS WHEN WE PUSH TO THE TOP OF THE HILL. WE WAITED A LONG TIME AND I HOPE THE NFL IS READY. I KNOW WE ARE ALL READY.

12-4 MAYBE 11-5

(( our main focus is not to get caught up in a tongue-wrestling match.our goal is to be 3-0 at the end of the week ))

R.BROWN QUOTE FROM THE USA TOADAY.thanks dolphins4life73

Don't mess with DC before he's had his coffee. Agree that the O is too conservative, but that all changes this game. Now we're home and ready to strut our stuff. Miami 35 NYJ 0.

DC DOLFAN,

You the best man!!!! when we lose im sick for the whole week leading up to the next game and if we lose before the bye week its even worst=no tv,blogs, newspapers, radio,etc...., but when we win im on top of everything DOLPHINS!! if we lose to team that a friend of mine root for i can take that i just hate to see the clips when we lose or hear any national talk! my dad best friend killed me bulls vs heat in mj days but we beat his vikes and he want even answer the phone! go figure! itook crap from him knowing heat was outmatched! the sad part i spared him on a cash bet and made it friendly a bottle of grey goose! i dont even want it now! funking sore loser!!

Chad Henne returned manhood to this franchise and it's fans. He brought us back from depths of backdoor football and wildcat h0m0fery.
I will not turn my back on Chad Henne no matter what!

No worries D4Life, you'll get the last laugh on your dad's friend this year with the Heat. They'll be sick (I'm a DC fan in basketball, and we were all excited about John Wall until Miami took all the oxygen in the room with their big offseason news). Now I'm thinking about switching teams. Lebron baby!

But I digress. I am singularly focuses, for the next 72 hours. I went back and watched the last game. Dobbins wasn't as bad as folks here said. Yeah, I saw some trip-ups, missed tackles, but nothing glaringly horrible. Carpenter played a nice game as well. I still wish we would have done more after than 50 yd. run by Ronnie. We had them on their heels. Even a field goal on that drive would have sealed the deal. Oh, and Favre looked even worse than the first time. Can't wait to see how Allen plays after that incredible game. If he steps up, I think he might have turned the corner and solidified a starting role. I'm proud of him. The whole team, I'm so damned proud to be a fan of the Miami Dolphins right now!

Your welcome aloco!!!
Offensevely we ok! i repeat we ok! i seriously think we downplayed the fact that this is the Meat and potatoes of the season! i fully expect the kid gloves to come off! rickie and ronnie check! oline check! wr and te check(even though its been limited)! now can henne step up and make the plays that are the not the spectacular ones, get rid of the ball on time(especially on out route)! we will see a new wrinkle this week for sure! i like our offense better than the planes! defensively just please stay healthy! for heaven sake can ronnie get on game wher he get 20+ carries! and let rickie run wild late 3rd once ronnie has weakened defense! thx! dolphins 27 planes 13

The Dolphins will win another close one 23-17
Look for Chad Henne to get 250 yrds 1TD 0 INT's
R

Ok....why is the app only posting half of my comment?

Furthermore...Peyton Manning threw 43 picks his first 2 years in the league and that's how Indy's final drive in the Super Bowl ended with a Manning Pick...Pennington threw 4 in playoff game against B'more...Flacco threw 4 last week.
If Henne gets picked against the Jets that's life. I don't want to see any comments that he can never be a starting QB by either amatuer or professional writers.
This is football. Not futbol.

go back and look at the two big pass plays against Minnesota, the first play bomb to marshall. There's no question that play is available ANY TIME the dolphins want it.

On the touchdown play, to Hartline, Henne was covered by two huge defensive players jumping at the perfect right time, one was within a foot of Henne when he released the ball, one was about 4 feet away. Henne didn't flinch. He waited until he had to throw, the perfect timing. Stable, steady, focused, and not ONE BIT AFRAID of the defense. Just playing his game.

Going back the week before, that Fasano pass, was a thing of beauty. Look, it's available ALL THE TIME, this offense is playing at a very high level, striving for even higher.

Also, if you looked at the Marshall-Bess combinations, what I see is that the Dolphins can dial up whatever wins they want in the passing game. But chunk yardage passing moves too fast, and to dominate a game, a crushing, grinding approach is always better, hold back back the aerial attack unless you really need it.

Yes, early season mistakes are blemishes, but the dolphins offense is truly moving toward greatness.

PriceMaster, no dis to Henne, but don't you think it was Parcells who brought it back to this franchise?

I think Miami moves Marshall around to get him matched up with Kyle Wilson. That's the mismatch Miami must & will try to exploit. Even Marshall on Cromartie should be exploited. Look for Fasano to re-appear this week!

Make them afraid to blitz. Miami should come out in 3 WR sets & throw EARLY to loosen the Jets up. I do NOT like Miami going in without a reliable 2nd TE option. The Tets can't blitz successfully if they are spread out. Gain 2-3 on 1st & 2nd down and allow yourself good 3rd down chances. ALOT of plays can be called for 3rd & 4 or less. Draws, screens, slants etc...

Then start to run in those 3 WR sets. Put Chad in a position to be succesful. Everytime JT is lined up on Jake long with his hand on the ground, Miami should RUN right at him.

I'm not afraid of the JET WR's, I'm worried about Keller. Put Bell & Dansby on him on run downs & Put Smith on him on passing downs. Soliai did real good against the Jets last year. IF he can spell Starks in the middle and give Starks some DE time, I feel good. When Starks is at NT, he has to use his speed to penetrate. Having a lineman in the backfield will hurt their RB's ability to make positive yards.

Miami 16 NYJ 14

Utdolfan,
First Parcells signed Ernest Wilford to be a deep threat receiver I think for $6mil but evidently Wilford can't catch anymore. Then he signed Pennington for $10mil who couldn't hit a deep threat receiver in stride because he'd already had 3 surgeries on his throwing shoulder. Throw in a safety that couldn't tackle (Wilson) and center that couldn't block (Grove). A GM with no experience that can't sign anyone without making him the highest paid at his position in history (Dansby) and head coach with no head coaching experience (Sparano). To cover up the mistake of signing Penny they break out the Wildcat (that's the play where the qb does not touch the ball) and what you get is system that made everyone in the organization and al of it's fans look like h0m0's.
It was Stephen Ross that made the trade for Brandon Marshall not Parcells.

Joe Schmoo, agree with a lot you said. Kyle Wilson MUST be exploited (he's the weak link back there).

I'm focusing on the o-line, because they're gonna give them a bunch of looks and pressures. They need to communicate and be stout (like they were for the most part last week). That's why running should be used this week as a deterrent to blitzes and pressure from the corners.

Then, once they feel our might, that's when I say open it up and let Henne throw downfield to loosen the defense.

On defense, you're absolutely right, we need to watch Keller. But after the strong performance against Shancoe, I'm not that worried (he's one of the best we'll face all year). Wake needs to get in Sanchez' face and make him uncomfortable.

If I hear these loser announcers diminish our team this weekend I'm gonna go crazy. We deserve to be favored in this game. We're on top of the division. The title WILL go through Miami this year, bet on it!

PriceMaster,
Ross brought J-Lo, Mark Anthony and the Williams sisters to the franchise. Sure Parcells made some mistakes, but at least they were corrected.

Parcells was running the show, and we are about to go 3-0.

they keep saying henne can make all the throws but they wont take the training wheels off. something's not adding up. then again, the phins are always trying to be secretive. personally, i don't have complete trust in the dude yet. not until he shows more consistency and getting rid of the ball.

DC, you got me all fired up. I want to break something green. Unfortunately I'm an accountant consulting to an insurance company at the moment so I will have to weight until I lift the weights tomorrow morning!

Let's put Sean Smith the TE killer on Keller. Smith is more athletic than Keller and has enough size to match up with him too.

(( is greed is good )) ,wall street the movie will be released today .

Price Master,

I think you lack intelligence in Dolphin's football.

1. Wilford wasn't signed to be a deep threat, he was signed to be a big possession guy. They already had a guy they wanted to be a deep threat, Ginn.
2. Penny was signed to stablize an offense on a young team, not stretch the field.
3. The Wildcat didn't come about to cover up for Pennington, it was brought about to get their running game to come alive.
4. Grove could block, he just couldn't stay healthy. Still a bad signing, they insisted he wasn't injury prone.
5. Unless it's Jerry Jones, owners don't make trades.
6. Dansby deserved to get paid. And after 2 weeks, he is earning every penny.

You bring up Pennington as if his 1 year stint was a failure, he led us to a division title after a 1-15 season. You mention Wilford, Wilson, Grove as FA duds. Well there were a few more also like Eric green, Chris Crocker etc..You don't hit on everyone. I'm more upset about their lack of good drafts at the top of drafts.

But, they also brought in Randy Starks who might be the best Defensive player on our team. SO with all that said, I can honestly say your dead wrong on almost every topic you addressed in your post. Please try to be fair when being critical. You're very off base on most of your points.

Thanks. DC. well put I have been trying to get my friends of the pessimism wagon, but is hard with all the Radio and News acting like we had losed the last couple games.. Let go feed the Wolfs. NOW

How anyone can complain about the current roster is beyond me. Go back to the 2007 team when this regime took over. There is practically nothing there.

We were lucky if we drafted one player a year that could help us during the Wannstedt/Cameron years. Saban was a bit better.

Now we have pro bowlers on the o line, WR, RB, CB, LB, and DL positions. No, they aren't perfect but neither were Schula and Jimmy Johnson. They've come a long way and contructed a team nobody wants to play against.

Price, Have you forgothen the 1-15 ?? out of 53 players in the roster the had some bad apples but still manage to compete is 08, 09 new team lots of key injuries and NOW new yunger team and leting go of all the past Busts.. were are set to compete for a long time now.. the is space on the bandwagon now don't waith after the next 2 games Now we need the Fans to be as pumped up as the team is..

I was in Minneapolis last Sunday, my fist observation to my son was that our team was pumped up!! now we need our fans to follow

Saw that Mark. But AccuScore has us beating them by 5. They say if we have 100 yards rushing, we have 77% chance of winning. If they hold us to under 100 yds., then they have a 65% chance to win.

So don't let Henning see that, he may only let Henne throw the ball in warm-ups.
###############################################
LMAO but your right

Mark,

I agree. You can be critical of the things they've done, but you also have to be objective about it. They made alot of blunders! But with all turning over they did, you cannot expect them to hit on every guy! The revamped an entire 53 man roster!

We all know the names: Wilford, Grove, Wilson, Crocker, Green, etc...But they went and got Dansby, traded for Fasano & Marshall, Starks...it all balances out.

We could be farther along but it's been the drafts that have killed us of late. Thats what I'm more frustrated with. Pat White (a luxury pick 1 year removed from 1-15), Patrick Turner, Philip Merling.. The 1st 3 rounds are where we HAVE to hit. Sadly, we have missed more than we've hit.

At least it looks like we have some other players we can resign like Jason Allen, who are still young, and are turning the corner. I like where we're heading. If we can go to 3-0 this week, I'll feel a WHOLE lot better!

Joe, but for every 2 and 3rd round pick they've missed on, they've made up for it in late round picks or undrafted free agents.

PS, don't give up on Merling or Sean Smith yet. We might have seen Smith's new niche last week as a receiving TE equalizer. He manhandled Shiancoe especially on that last play.

after reading the last few posts it's amazing ;

1-we still on track to be a great stable team ,not one up and one year down.

2-not every one can build a team, tuna knows some moves will pay and some will back fire .

3-his planning was great and it shows in the ream today .

4-to have a team at 1-15 w/JT as a leader shows how much crap mangement was .

I'm not down on Sean Smith, I was never really up on him. I think he is completely overrated. If not for a lot of bad passes last year, he would have been burned ALOT. Merling has shown nothing in 2 years. I don't think he'll be back next year. This Front office doesn't sit on mistakes too long. (Wilson, Wilford, Thomas etc)

Next year I'd like to see them cut Will Allen, draft another good young corner & resign Jason Allen. Hopefully Nolan Carrol shows he can cover and we should be set @ Db for many years.

My concern this week is Jerry. No practice and a rookie against that crazy Jets defense. If he does play with not alot of practice time, how will he fare? Better than putting a back-up that has practiced? That has me quite concerned!

Henning is old school alright, he is o old school that apparently he predates the invention of the forward pass. We are at a higher risk running than passing with R/R inopportune fumbles. I hope the spec teams are prepping for the fake punts and reverse returns

GOLD AT 1300

Henning is old school alright, he is o old school that apparently he predates the invention of the forward pass.<<

Our weakness is Punt/Kick returns. We can't break a return for anything. Coverage is decent but man, some starting position beyond the 25 would be nice! Especially with our slow offense to this point...the less we have to move the ball the better!

Joe, like you said the management does not sit on mistakes and the fact that Merling is still on the roster makes me think that there is something there. And like Jason Allen, Merling has to show something next year early and often or he'll be gone.

Nolan Caroll can't cover NFL receivers in games yet. Sean Smith for as indifferent as his form has been is light years ahead of Carrol right now. However, Carrol can still contribute immediately. One thing I love about these corners is how physical and large they all are. I think Vontae is the smallest at 205 and 6 ft. And it's not like they can't run. J. Allen, Vontae, Nolan Carrol, and even Sean Smith all have wheels. It's an impressive lot.

ALoco, did oyu buy gold like I receommended? Gold stocks are still being stubborn though. Barrick and Goldcorp are making my hair white. Price of gold goes up and these stocks go down, bah!

Mark , GOLD CORP CEO WAS ON CNBC AND SAID HE'S NOT HEDGING ON HIS CO GOLD.THAT MAKE SCARED TO DO ANY THING .

That should make you want to buy goldcorp stock like i have right now. Barrick has the same philosophy. Gold price has increased 30% in the last few months and continues to go up yet the stocks haven't completely agreed in kind. When they do, they will pop like crazy.

With the US Treasury printing up over $1 trillion this year, gold price will not come down.

Mark as you know you don't take a CEO word at face value .most of them are con artist . all the stocks are up last few months by proping it up .

dan henning vs anyone....useless

dan henning will hold back the offense as usual with his garbage play calls

Remember back in the day when Dan 'The Man" Marino would continue to punish a team with his airial assult even when they were up by 14 points. That is the type of swagger we need now. We finally have a defense, lets let it fly Sunday night. Throw the kitchen sink at them! RUN RICKY RUN!!!

ALoco, first off, you're right on one thing. I don't trade in anything based on what ANYONE says on TV and I'm glad you don't either.

Second, my opinion is based on pure numbers. A 30% move in gold price is supposed to equate to a 60-70% per cent change in the price of a gold stock. Yet over the last few months, gold stocks are on average up about the same as the commodity itself. This tells me that traders/investors do not believe in the long term staying power of the commodity price increase. The longer the gold price continues to increase, the cork on the top of the gold stock prices must eventually pop as well, resulting in large increases in the stock prices.

Heck, do what you want, I'm just providing reasoning for my opinions.

All that said, my best current holding is Google. Up 10 per cent in the 15 calendar days since I bought it.

did dan marino won any thing .i am just asking .

air it my a s s .

Fish Man, I also remember that same Miami team unable to close out games because they couldn't run the ball and help their defense by chewing up the clock and subsequently losing games/championships for that reason. It works both ways.
