Dolphins cut bad investment Grove, re-sign Procter

The Dolphins have terminated the contract of center Jake Grove. Yes, it was a financial decision based on the fact Grove is not exactly living up to his contract and more money was about to be poured into his bank account if the team didn't make this move.

Grove, 30, signed a $29.5 million contract as an unrestricted free agent last year. It was money not well spent as Grove was injured part of last season starting only 10 games because, as has been his history, he was injured part of the season.

Those 10 games will be the full extent of his contribution for the $14.5 million he got guaranteed.

This training camp and preseason, Grove didn't fare any better. He was nursing an injured shoulder for much of camp and he was unable to beat out Joe Berger for the starting job.

Adding to Grove's issues is the fact his contract called for him to receive a bonus once he played the season-opener against the Buffalo Bills. The Dolphins clearly had no desire to throw good money after bad.

The Dolphins filled their vacant roster spot by re-signing Cory Procter. Procter originally signed with Miami as an unrestricted free agent from Dallas on May 24 but was released Sept. 5.

Welcome back, Procter!

On the injury front, ILB Channing Crowder (groin) is apparently not practicing again today. He was not wearing pads and did not participate in individual drills. It's starting to look like Crowder won't be ready for Sunday's game. He hasn't practiced in three weeks. He doesn't look ready to practice today, much less play. Game's getting closer.

Jake Long (Knee) did practice for the second consecutive day.

Meanwhile, Dolphins consultant Bill Parcells was not present for practice for -- at minimum -- the first 45 minutes. Cannot say if he came late.

[Update: Parcells was seen warming up his golf game by swinging a golf club in front of the Dolphins facility while practice was going on out back. He left the facility while the team was practicing. You can do that as the consultant.]

TnPhinfan, can we recreate the scene in Deliverance.

Scott is not like the good available player will take less than a 3 to 5 year contract, I believe once a collective bargaining agreement was not reached that they have taken the opportunity to start again but this time just a few spots not an entire team of devoid of talent(1-15) that they had in 08, Don't know what your expectations were but if you have NFL network please watch the Americas game on the Saints and be patience just year 3 of total rebirth....

I must agree with Boulder...this FO must be given at least a full four years, Relax ppl we have lived thru the Wanny era and Cam's folly and at this point we are much, much, better than before and will improve as we are the second yongest (tied) team in NFL...I think we can win between 9-11 games this yr tho injuries always must be considered...Go Fins

Out of all the players we've cut, Grove could be the one we bring back after week 1.

It is questionable whether some of the other players issues were money related.

That's not the case with Grove. His contract "issues" are/were significant.

A couple of things fit with a possible restructuring/resigning. He has been nursing an injury and was expected to miss week one already.
His original contract was done under the premise he would be healthy and available.

I don't know how Grove feels about restructuring, but if this was on the minds of the powers that be, this series of events would be the perfect time.

I personally hope we bring him back. He's as good as Berger while injured, but he's also been overpaid here since day 1.

Riddle me this...

With all the cuts being made due to injuries why are the Phins holding onto and paying Clam Chowder? Why not dump the oft injured mostly invisible MLB... Just saying.

Oh and GO FINS

Maybe because Crowder's 2010 salary isnt guaranteed whether he plays or not. Grove's was.

Where have you gone Don Shula ????

Seems as if the dolphin fanbase is in more dissaray than the team. LOL!

Hey...I like the fact they are cutting poor players earlier rather than later.
The old coaches/GM's would sit on them way too long and not get any quality for the dollars spent.
Call Tuna what you want, but he has turned this organization around and we are heading in the RIGHT direction...period...end of story...see ya on the first tee Tuna!

Good afternoon Fin fans...Odinseye, agreed about Grove, i still like him but at the amount of money he woulda made and his continuous injuries it wasnt worth it. Unlike the Jests this team wont have a salary cap problem whenever a new agreement is reached. I dont bwlieve Crowder will be cut. Sorry but with him in tge middle this team is just better against the run. He tried to do too much last year.Too much upside to cut him. cant wait til Sunday! Go Fins!!!

Yeah AK, I'm shocked that Crowder hasn't been chopped or put on IR either. This guys is SO unreliable. I don't think some of you guys realize how nice it would be to have a guy we can count on week in and week out to go out there to play and make plays. I think this has to be one of the priorities in the offseason....someone of quality to couple with Dansby.

Well, I'm putting all the nah-sayers aside for now and hoping for big things from our 'Phins this season. I don't think we've shown anything so far in the pre-season and I'm not sure that wasn't planned that way.

Have We Ever Signed More 'blah' Players? Procter Again? Really? Its Gettin Ridicilous.

I think we might have that reliable ILB on the team already Craig. Lets see what Dobbins can do as a starter next to Dansby while Crowder's out. I have a feeling Dansby is going to make him a much more effective player, like many fans were expecting to happen with Crowder. If Dobbins really lights it up filling in for Crowder I wouldn't be surprised to see him steal Crowder's job. Also, I like our depth ALOT this yr at the position compared to last year. With Dobbins, Crowder, Johnson, and Carpenter behind Dansby, we have a lot of intelligence and athleticism and Dobbins and Carpenter can cover while Johnson and Crowder are very stout against the run. Dansby can do anything and everything at a high level. I think this might actually be our most stacked unit this season.

WTH is parcells up to? what a mess! 8 and 8 here we come...

Re-signing a reliable, olineman for depth is ridiculous ? Okie dokie LOL

Well at least some fans understand the NFL and how it works..

PUT DOWN THE PIPE!!

Jake Grove is an awesome center and WHEN healthy played great. Did you all not watch any of the games last year???

Problem is the Grove kept getting injured.

I thought the decision to release him was boneheaded! When healthy Grove was one of the best centers in football. Even ESPN and NFL Network commented on this.

So instead of having an experience vet at back-up we cut Grove and he walks with 14 MILLION of the Dolphins money for basically 4 preseason games.

Ridiculous!!!!!!!!!!!

BAD MOVE MIAMI

Then the are Dolphin fans like who really have no clue.

if in fact tony liked proctor more than grove and his position flexibilty(do more jobs)etc, then why did he cut proctor last sat. and keep grove? it has to do with $$$$$. should have cut grove last week and not take chance some team would sign proctor. ireland will have to do much better in the future to hold his job.

Then the are Dolphin fans like who really have no clue.

This sentence makes 0 sense. I'm sure it's a typo, but still have no idea what you are trying to say.

Who was blocking people off the line last year in the Wildcat?

Jake Grove.. Look at the film.

Did Marino get cut after his achillis tear?
No.. he came back and lit up the Patriots.

No we have Berger and Proctor.. WHOOOOO YEA!!

Ryan, like you said, WHEN healthy, Grove was a beast. What good does that do us if he can't stay healthy ? This was the RIGHT move. They'd be wasting a roster spot and money on a guy who has great talent, but wouldn't be using it on the bench...I don't understand why this move is so hard for people to understand...

RYAN,put the pipe down ,grove coast us 30 million ,he didn't do any thing for his money and took our sweat and hard earned money .come on man .we should find players gets paid by the hour .

i hope BRET Favre loses his confidence tonight or get sick in the stomach w/chinese food .

Also, I think alot of people are underestimating Berger. I bet he had alot to do with the decision to cut Grove. Berger is solid man. And with 2 beasts next to him in Jerry and Incognito, there's no reason for him not to have a great year. Ryan, you asked who was blocking people off the line last year. You are right, it was Grove when he was in the game. This year, it will be both Incognito and Jerry. Let's remember Jerry was most likely the best OG in the draft next to Mike Iupati. Yes, he is better than the Jets pick Vlad Ducasse..

I guess your right...

Grove's body is abused and was put through hell when he played because he gave a crap and wanted to win...

But hey I am the one somoking the pipe right?

Do you not realise Grove gets 14 Million this year whether he puts on a jersey or not??

We are not talking Gabril Wilson here.

Dude watch the film... Grove handled business.

This talk of being unsettled on the line is bogus. The starting line has been set for weeks - Long, Incognito, Berger, Jerry, Carey. Young. Solid. Settled. There may be injuries, yes, but that's a solid line, with a lot of upside.

IN THE WORLD OF BUSINESS only the strong survive where's no heart ,no love and no mercy .............

I like Berger. But when HEALTHY Grove is better.

I just get po'ed when people comment about players and have no clue.

Grove was cut because the Dolphins didn't want to have to finish out his contract NEXT year.

Dude is making his money this year.

God help us if Proctor goes in...

Procter will be the back-up at Center. He played the position in Dallas

did fins fire any sales people like the heat ?

Ryan, NOBODY is saying Grove wasn't good man. He was. He was VERY good. I agree with you, he was GOOD. GROVE was good. He was SO good. Man, he was FRIGGIN AWESOME. But seriously, he really was a great player. The only problem is, like you have already stated several times yourself, he was only good when he was healthy ! Which just wasnt often enough. Hence, he got cut. I really don't know what you trying to get at.

Do you not realise Grove gets 14 Million this year whether he puts on a jersey or not??

Yes, Ryan everyone understands that. Do you not realize that if he does put on a jersey they have to pay him millions more ? That's why he got cut. Get it ?

I will reserve judgment on the current roster moves until after week 1 when vets can be signed without guaranteed contracts. The lack of depth in some areas could be an issue but some people are really overreacting to getting rid of some backups.

As for the Trifecta's batting average, they really missed the boat on the initial swarm of free agents who got huge contracts. I think they improved this offseason though. Where this group has excelled is finding gems such as Cameron Wake or Lou Polite. Even recently they have brought in guys like Marlon Moore and Roberto Wallace which made Pat Turner expendable.

Props to our front office for being able to open things up for competition so the best players actually win jobs. Heck, even the media darling Jets can't admit mistakes like that. They held onto Joe McKnight who was terrible just because they didn't want to show he was a wasted pick.

Ryan, When healthy is the key words. I like Grove too but the man isn't on the field enough.

Kenny,

Are you sure you have your facts straight?

Grove walked with 14 million because we cut him.

PS: I'm not trying to argue, I was just curious because I didn't think he got that money to walk.

If this is Ireland's first big decision as GM... I like him better already. I can see why Miami went after Grove to begin with. He is a down and dirty player when he plays, and had he worked out, he would have been a good fix until Miami finally drafts its next Stephenson or Ruddy. Centers are best taken in the draft and best taken early. They are nearly as important to an O-line as the left tackle. I hope there is one for Miami to take in 2011 that works out. With Long, Jerry and whom ever they take as a center next year, they may finally get past this revolving door that free agency has brought. Right now... every team with a dominant line drafted 95% of the players and let them grow into a team together.... they did not chase free agents and spend big bonus bucks.

grove gets only 5.8 million DONKEYS this year ,it's year 2 of 5 years contract worth 30 million. where are we a guy gets 1/2 of his 30 million on his second year .

Derek, ireland is a figure head.it's the money man MIKE DEE who's trying to recover the losses for the owner .

It's in the blog. Grove signed a 29.5 million dollar contract. He was paid 14 million LAST YEAR. If he was on the roster this years money would have been guaranteed. His contract was front loaded year one so that's why he is walking away with 14 mil, the Dolphins are not cutting him and giving him another 14 mil. Grove gets nothing else.

i TAKE THAT BACK...

1-GROVE HAD 14 MILLION GURANTEED IN LAST YEAR CONTRACT .
2-BY RELEASING HIM THEY AVOID PAYING HIN 13 MILLION NEXT 3 YEARS .

30 MILLION ,3 MILLION WAS PAID LAST YEAR ,14 MILLION WILL BE PAID TO HIM NOW.

3-SAVING............13 MILLION 24 TIMES HENNE'S SALARY

Derek4, an argument could be made re: most important Oline spot. I say center, but I completely agree on drafting the center as you so eloquenty stated!

Small issue, but I'm not with the "tradition" crowd with the uniforms. Ok, in the 80's, yeah, tradition was great (team was fantastic). But we're almost FORTY years removed from the last SuperBowl win, we're TWENTY years removed from Dan Marino-era. And what our RECENT history been, bad, awful. It's time we UPDATE people!! Tradition is toe-cheese. What we need are slick new uni's to go with a slick new team ready to pounce on fools. The orange uniforms are killer. Make those a home/away uniform, then do a white one (maybe all white or something), or hell, throw that aqua out and pick up the Hurricanes green). SHAKE IT UP!! Then all the fans will have to buy new jerseys, money in the bank, folks excited to get it on with a new look. Let's turn the page.

This blog was better last year. Now its 40% silly talk and bashing, 40% don't even comprehend or remember what is written or explained in the article, so the ask questions that have already been answered or repeat the same thing 19 other bloggers already wrote, and then maybe 20% are trying to have a worthwhile conversation.

Bill Lambeer,

I liked your post. Like, like, you got mad knowledgeable skills DUDE-lol!

Seriously, thanks for mentioning Lousaka. Everybody seems to overlook him when arguing all these personnel moves.

In my opinion, Polite is an unsung hero that has quietly performed at a Pro Bowl level. ANOTHER excellent "FIND" for the Trifecta.

PS: Mr. Lambeer, do you remember that time you and the "Bad Boys" won the Championship?

That was AWESOME!!!!

Fellow Fin Fans (Optimistic, Pessimistic, and Realistic)-

First of all I think that we are very passionate group. We love our team and just want excellence (some of who have been fans for a long time DESERVE excellence).

I think a lot of our misgivings (myself included) are that after last year , even though we were 7-9 we were a very competitive team. It seemed like we were only a couple key players away from being THE dominant team in the AFC East. We were so excited about signing Nolan Caroll, Brandon Marshall and Dansby that we immediately had very high expectations.

Our O-line seemed set at the time and we were thinking that a once perceived weakness (the D-line) was going to be a strength.

Of course that was before the pre-season, the roster moves, and Parcels steeping down. I think are very legitimate circumstances that culminated in a lot more questions about our team than answers. Thus deflating some of our optimism.

My point is that I understand the frustration and I agree to a certain extent. But it is also true that until we play at least 3 or 4 games then maybe some of us are doing a knee-jerk including myself at times.

I admit that some of these roster moves make sense financially to do it this season but man I am very concerned about depth at several key positions.

Anyway GO FINS!

Prediction-
Dolphins-24
Bills-17

aloco, Henne will get his money if he proves himself, consistently! If he and this team start clicking and winning consistently....(and positive consistency is key), the management would no doubt renegotiate, and pay him what he is worth. I'm sure it does bother him to be the starter and get paid less than the other 2 QB's, no doubt. But being the starter should be a tremendous motivator for great performance. What a tremendous opportunity for a young man. My humble opinion.
