Ireland wanted it, he gets Salguero's 53-man roster

On Tuesday when I approached Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland about the Dez Bryant matter, we had a good exchange and he ended it with this question:

"Do you have your 53 yet?"

My 53?

Even I don't care about my 53. I care about Jeff Ireland's 53, and I would bet that's what you (my readers) care about, too.

But since Jeff didn't offer to share with me his 53 until the Dolphins actually cut down to that number by Saturday, it got me to thinking. Why not give you guys my 53 after all?

So, just for kicks, here it is:

Quarterbacks (3)

Chad Henne, Chad Pennington, Tyler Thigpen.

My thinking: It is hard to cut a second-round pick, in this case Pat White. But he simply has not proven he's an NFL caliber player and it is better to cut losses now than continue to nurture a player who remains undersized and seemingly overmatched. No matter how much he learns the offense or defenses or settles down, he will still be a 5-11 or 6-foot QB in a 6-3 QB world. He will still have an inaccurate arm. He will never be 225 pounds and be able to absorb the hits in or out of the pocket.

Running Backs (5)

Ronnie Brown, Ricky Williams, Patrick Cobbs, Lousaka Polite, Lex Hilliard.

My thinking: I keep Hilliard because he is a core special teams player and because Brown (injury history) and Williams (age and unpredictability) cannot be counted as certainties to play all 16 games. Cobbs sticks because he adds quickness to the offense when he's in there and he is a fine special teams player.

Wide Receivers (5)

Brandon Marshall, Brian Hartline, Davone Bess, Patrick Turner, Marlon Moore.

My thinking: Neither Turner nor Moore should buy houses locally. Not yet. If they do make the team, they will then have to survive the next round of concern, which is have they beaten out the sixth receivers around all the other teams that are now available? I would not feel secure about anything if I were them. And remember, there will be vets on the market in the second week that were cut simply because having them on the roster the first week would have guaranteed their entire season's salaries. Those vets will be signed by teams starting Sept. 13 and 14. Finally, Roberto Wallace is a tough guy to cut. He has that prototype body. He has tons of upside. If he doesn't indeed make it, he screams practice squad to me.

Tight ends (2)

Anthony Fasano, David Martin.

My thinking: Fasano and Martin, who is finally in good shape, have nailed down their spots. I cut John Nalbone, although he probably makes it for the actual Dolphins roster. The team likes him despite his inconsistent training camp and preseason. I went this direction because I fear injuries on the offensive line so I'm keeping an extra OLineman. I also believe the Dolphins can scour the waiver wire for tight ends better than John Nalbone.

Offensive linemen (9)

Jake Long, John Jerry, Vernon Carey, Richie Incognito, Jake Grove, Joe Berger, Donald Thomas, Lydon Murtha, Andrew Gardner.

My thinking: Make no mistake the Nate Garner injury is a definite painful setback. It means the loss of a versatile player that can start with little drop-off from anyone else. The final spots here come down to Donald Thomas vs. Cory Procter and I went with the younger guy, although Procter has at times been better than Thomas this preseason.  I also went with Gardner ahead of Lydon Murtha as the backup tackle. Despite Gardner not having a great training camp, there is still something there about that kid I like. Doesn't mean the Dolphins feel the same way. Also, regardless of whether Murtha or Gardner make the team, the Dolphins will be looking to upgrade off the waiver wire so they should buy a house locally just yet.

Defensive Linemen (7)

Kendall Langford, Randy Starks, Jared Odrick, Charles Grant, Paul Soliai, Tony McDaniel, Marques Douglas.

My thinking: Grant and Douglas are renters, no question about that. They probably won't be on the team next year. But they have played well enough to make it for now. I could not put Montavious Stanley on there as well because we don't want three renters on the defensive line. Do not be surprised if the Dolphins put one or two young, hungry, up-and-coming defensive linemen on their practice squad with the hopes of developing them for later this season and next season. And, yes, I know I cut Lionel Dotson. What can I say? Three training camps and he's still a third-teamer? Got to move on.

Linebackers (9)

Cameron Wake, Karlos Dansby, Koa Misi, Ikaika Alama-Francis, Channing Crowder, Tim Dobbins, Micah Johnson, Charlie Anderson, Erik Walden.

My thinking: Right off the top, Austin Spitler missed two weeks of camp with a stomach virus and had a tough time catching up. He does deserve a practice squad spot. Chris McCoy also deserves a practice squad shot. But has either won a roster spot? Not that I've noticed. Tim Dobbins makes it because he's experienced, a good special teams guy and a good man to have in the locker room. Erik Walden, to me, has value on special teams so he makes my team. Micah Johnson is border line, I will grant you. Not fast, much to learn, not polished. But I love that he hits people. He needs to get more downhill, as coach Tony Sparano said, so his tackles come in the hole or the line of scrimmage. But he has potential, in my opinion. This kid will play in the NFL. I say the Dolphins should keep Folsom because, in part, he's OK on special teams but more importantly, because of the uncertain nature of Channing Crowder's injury status -- which increasingly is becoming a yearly issue with him. [UPDATE: My apologizies to Charlie Anderson. Overlooked him earlier. He's on there now. J.D. you're out. But in the real world it will likely come down to Folsom vs. Johnson.]

Defensive Backs (10)

Vontae Davis, Sean Smith, Benny Sapp, Nolan Carrolll, Will Allen, Jason Allen, Tyrone Culver, Chris Clemons, Yeremiah Bell, Reshad Jones.

My thinking: Yes, that's a lot of defensive backs but the injury to Will Allen forced this in my view of things. Another mitigating factor for keeping so many is that Carroll should win the kick return job, while Culver and Jason Allen are core special teams players -- meaning they play on all the special teams. Benny Sapp is the early-season insurance as the nickel corner so he makes it. Reshad Jones is going to be a good player and that hope is reason enough not to cut him and expose him to another team plucking him or signing him to their practice squad.

Specialists (3)

P Brandon Field, K Dan Carpenter, LS John Denney.

My thinking: Each of these guys signed contract extensions in the offseason and none have any real competition in camp. Even I can figure this one out.

[BLOG NOTE: The Dolphins and Cowboys finish up their preseason tonight with an 8 p.m. (EST) game. So, yes, there will be a live blog right here then. Join me for it during the game. Right here.]

armando, you took may advice to list your roster ,i am you did .

i am happy you did .

FIRST mistake you made are the qb's ............henne-penne-white .

Finally a breakthrough blog.

Please digest easily mates

Patrick Turner sucks, what has he done EVER? Sign Roberto Wallace and Pruitt.

turner to the practice squad .

you cut Anderson for Folsom???

My boy Rick Scott pick Nolan Carroll's mother to be his Lt. governor.

you forgot Anderson. He will get the LB spot not JD Folsom.

Would trade Thigpen
He will yield a 4th or 5th round pick

and Yes
Stay the course with Pat White

Armando U R Exactly Right on the WRs

Pat White is gone, get over it! As for a lot of these guys, they're gone too once NFL teams are forced to trim down to 53. If they don't find somebody to help Marshall on the other side, we're gonna be in for it! A current article listed some good guys available and I'm sure Tuna and the boys have those phones heated. That 53 man roster and the taxi squad need to be well thought out!

HAARPed up H-"Earl" is going after The stadiums of the NY Jets
Giants and New England Patriots

No love for Charlie Anderson!!?!?!? Come on man...

Pat White will be a success

They will use Pat White when needed and he will be a success

pat white is my favorite player, never played more the 11/2 minutes in a game .

Just as a comparison

Drew Brees: Height: 6 ft 0 in (1.83 m) Weight: 209 lb (95 kg)

Pat White: Height: 6 ft 0 in (1.83 m) Weight: 205 lb (93 kg)

I just haven't seen anything from Thigpen that instills confidence, we still need to see more from White. I know its a marginal decision, but I think your off on this one. Keep White, trade Thigpen.

Another HAARPed up Oil Rig in the Gulf of Mexico
stay tuned

Its The End Of The World As We Know It and ...
i feel fine

pat white decision was made long ago. he didnt see reps in camp and no action/snaps in preseason games.

Nate Ness?

White has amazing talent, my concern is he would be great if he would play another position so he could get on the field and utilize that talent. Then we would see his true worth..

i'd take nate ness over clemons at FS. has clemons been in on a play yet?

I'd like to see White given a real chance, not just scraps from the table. I don't think Thigpen is ever going to be our starter, and if the Dolphins could get a 4th rounder for him, I'd consider it a good bargain for the future.

sean smith trade or practice squad?

i watched pat white in 2 training camps; 30 practices. he really never showed any progress as a drop back nfl QB. he missed alot of open receivers along the way by alot! he is a very nice, laid back person however. just not nfl material with our conservative playcalling.

sean smith is another one who doesnt jam or use his hands. was beaten regularly in practice by all the receivers. not physical and doesn't play low enough. shouldn't be a corner!

WR Turner & WR Moore lock up jobs tonight @ 8:00 pm

Keep Pat White and have him sell hot dogs and beer.

Overlooked Charlie Anderson earlier. My apologies to him. He's on the team now. Check the update.

Pat White is saving his skills and has decided to show u tonight in Dallas

tune in

The coaches are always looking for players that can fill in at different positions..it actually assures these players a roster spot. I get the punter and kicker but the LS has always baffled me. Not what they do or why; but why can't a backup lineman figure out how to hurl a ball between his legs...hit another player in his hands 8-15yds away...is it really that difficult for professional lineman to figure out? You can't tell me Procter wouldn't make the team infront of Denney if he could hike the ball to the punter. Somebody school me.

Think Omar "the Hellen Keller of Miami Dolphins Insight" should shave his coconut head and stop prancing around like a wanna be rock star trying to draw attention to himself instead of reporting accurately on the Miami Dolphins

the best db's on the phins are the errant passes from the qb's and the dropped balls from the wr's/te's/rb's.

Nate Ness instead of culver----Ness can play corner or safety and play special teams-----6"1 210 he has size too

a trade could be in the workks .chad penne can go to cardinals or chi .

Who is a better football player, Jason Allen or sean smith?

AZ - The thing with long snappers is after they snap the ball, hold their block for 3 seconds, they then have to run down field to fill a lane and make a tackle. There aren't a whole lot of true lineman that can do that. A better position to get that versatility would be a LB like JD Folsom. If you remember JT was the backup long snapper.

smith needs to be b?tch slapped.

165 mile an hour wind gusts
How will Brady throw to Moss in those winds?

I'd Keep Pat White why LS Denney useless? also I think u are correct on WR Pat Turner needs a chance to play big target could improve with a year experience uif he doesnt get rid of him next year

1) Thigpen showcased all second half, traded to the G-Men or Cards.

2) Pat White Makes the team.

3) Procter makes the team. Gardner to the Practice Squad

4) Pat Turner gets the shaft after an impressive outing of Moore and "Its got to be" Wallace

Ness has no pro experience, he is a one qtr wonder.
Culver can play the 2 safety positions and plays ST.

Sean Smith finally makes a play tonight so he can look at him himself immediately in the giant TV and start jivin'

Not a lot of proven talent in this roster, especially on defense.
It screams 8-8.
The Tuna will go.
I wouldn't buy a local house if I were Tony "Blah-Blah" Sparano of Jeff "I overpay" Ireland.

No rookies have pro experience. Can I get a big DUH!!!!!!

Someone please just end it.

Miami is thin a WR again. I don't trust Turner or Marlon Moore. He has dropped to easy screen passes in back to back games. I know all the WRs have been dropping balls but Marshall will catch 100 if given the opportunity and makes up for his dropped passes.

LB I would cut Crowder. He is an average player who talks too much and thinks he is a locker room influence. He should be cut in favor of Micah Johnson and Charlie Anderson who has played inside and has more versatility as a special teams player.

I would keep all the DBs too. I like Nolan Carroll who flashes ability. It sucks but the truth of the matter is that Sean Smith will start again. He is a SOFT punk. I haven't had player on this team irk me as much as Smith since oh wait Channing Crowder. Vonte is a stud CB in the making. He isn't in the Darrelle Revis mold nor will he ever be but he reminds me of Nate Clements in his Buffalo days. A physical corner with the ability to shut down top WRs although on a less consistant basis.

why r'nt there any dolphins jerseys in the top 15 most selling.? has the phins allure finaly vanished.?

Andy should keep his opinions a secret.

armando is a moron... more off than on. I cannot possibly imagine anyone being allowed to cover a team for all these years with barely the slightest clue of what comprises either "football talent" or the way a current regime thinks.

None of us knows how good Pat White is going to be because he has barely played. Assuming he is no good because he hasn't played much or not done well in the few series he has played is moronic. Look at history and you will see Parcells has a definitive method of bringing QBs he likes along super slowly. Ask the other players and they will to a man tell you White is the most improved player on the team. Not only does Pat White make the team, but he is the QB of the future. When you see him standing next to Henne on the sidelines notice he is right about the same size as Henne. What ever gave armando the idea White is "undersized"? Has this "beat reporter" even noticed the guy's bulking up? It is obvious that when the player didn't show up that first day of practice it was because he was devastated over being informed he would not be playing much or any at all this year (i.e. another year charting plays, bulking up, and learning).
Nonetheless, this player has more intangibles than any other QB on the roster, more upside, and is a hugely proven winner at the collegiate level (something none of the other QBs were).

Waterboy you make and excellent prediction. Tyler Thigpen should of been the starter in KC until they dumped him for practically the same player but were stupid enough to think Matt Cassel didn't suck. I think trading him makes sense especially to the Cards.

I haven't seen it showcased but is Marlon Moore fast or just quick like Bess? Miami needs at least someone with speed. If Wallace has legit speed I would keep him over Turner. I think trading Ginn was pointless. Was he a starter? No. He had speed to stretch the defense as a third receiver. He could of ran GO routes every time he touched the field just someone who can make the defense worry about that. He also single handedly won the games in Giants stadium vs. the paper champs! Oh well

2 watt stop playing with that long vibrating thingy.

Andy's frontal lobe you talking to me or just acting like a moron and talking to yourself?

Pat White can't play QB in the NFL. We've all seen it. We cannot keep him.

Allan I heard Parcells was totally against the Pat White pick and that was Ireland's guy. I don't know how true it is but I read it on a site not too long ago

Right on Mando with Lionel Dotson. Just like you said, 3yrs, 3rd-stringer, bye.

As far as Pat White, I'd GIVE ME AWAY as a gift to the Patriots, no compensation necessary, just like a one-time charity thing. That's how much I KNOW he sucks. Then, if he plays, I take out the defense, except 3 guys: NT, Mike LB and Yeremiah. And I DARE him to snap the ball. Get what I'm trying to say here folks. I'd say White was gay, but that would give him way too much credibility in my opinion.

You know those little fish, that swim around sharks mouths, following them everywhere and eating their scraps and cleaning the sharks, that's Pat White to me. Like a minnow. A guppy. Put me and Pat White in a ring and in the end it'd be me and a bowl of turtle soup with eyeballs (like the Geico money). Pat White should only make this team as the jockstrap heater (the guy who breathes on jockstraps before games in the winter). Even that would be considerate to the guy. If Pat White were my father, I'd be in a non-traditional family, 'cause I'd have two mothers.

give pet white the ball and get out of the way for at least one game .

as a 3rd qb white is absolutely a better choice over thigpen. if it was primary backup the i'd keep thigpen. thigpen is what he is, a 54% passer who has never won a game. white gives you options. he has said recently he'd do whatever the coaches asked. as far as accuracy, he was 65% in college and 4 for 4 in preseason. but he has upside, thigpen doesn't.
