Dolphins fire John Bonamego, promote Rizzi

The Dolphins have fired special teams coach John Bonamego and replaced him with assistant special teams coach Darren Rizzi, according to coach Tony Sparano.

The decision was made by Sparano overnight.

Bonamego was Miami's special teams coordinator since 2008. He was the coach most responsible for the poor play of the teams the past two weeks when the Dolphins had two punts blocked, had a field goal blocked and returned for a TD, and gave up a 103-yard kickoff return TD.

Rizzi joined the Dolphins in 2009 and had no previous experience in the NFL prior to that. Rizzi has been coaching in college since 1993 through  2008 with Colgate, New Haven, Northeastern, New Haven again as the head coach, Rutgers and Rhode Island as the head coach.

In announcing Bonamego's departure, Sparano called it a "tough decision," cautioned that "it ain't all broke," and "players also have to take responsibility."

There will be some changes with players also in the coming weeks although there are no specifics at this time. The Dolphins have used starters on special teams, including Tim Dobbins, Jason Allen and Cameron Wake.

"I want my core players to play better on special teams right now," Sparano said. "To be honest, if we need to put more starters in there, we'll look at that."

I recognize that some of you will view this move as a day late and three touchdowns allowed short. The special teams, after all, have struggled for years in Miami with last week's Jets game being among the worst of that.

In that regard, Sparano might have moved one week sooner.

But doing it today, after Monday night's meltdown which I described in my Miami Herald column as an epic failure, is better than nothing. It is a risk. Rizzi might not be the permanent fix. And as the assistant, he was part of the staff that authored the problem as well.

But perhaps he will oversee changes. Perhaps he will correct the issues with blocking schemes against line stunts that Bonamego clearly did not. I would start with Pat McQuistan, who simply didn't block anyone on one of the blocked kicks last night.

We'll see how it turns out.

How can you expect a playoff team with this crappy drafting?

For the last 10 years, we've been hearing that Miami's offense is conservative, they'll never throw deep because they don't have a strong arm QB and they don't have a WR to throw to either. Now we've got Henne, who's got a canon of an arm (so they say) and we've got Brandon Marshall, the best WR in the NFL the last 5 years. Why the F*** don't we throw it deep to him? He's 6'5 for cryin'out loud. What's with all this underneath crap, even when we're trailing by 21?? And some fans think these are the coaches who are going to take us to the promised land? Yeah right! I'll make you another prediction. If things keep on going like this, Marshall will erupt. And watch the media start saying how he's a cancer. He's by far the best WR we've had here since Mark Clayton. Now maybe, just maybe it would be a good idea to get him involved a bit more. And go deep. What do you think Mr.Henning?

The Dolphins will be alright? Oh hell, then lets all just have another "sip", everything's fine, no problems here.

The special teams problem has been lingering like a F_cking Mt.Vesuvius. We knew she was gonna blow, we just didn't know when. Fear not brave DolFans Rizzi to the rescue....SLURP!

The other lingering problem is probably worse. We're playing the high powered Patriots, opening drive. We got to make a statement, come out swinging. We got a nice drive going, into Patriots territory, 3rd and 6 from New England's 35. EUREKA, it's wildcat time baby! Sip, slurp, Guzzle!

This was Henning's big moment. He was gonna show them there detractors, come hell or high water, how we used to do it back in the day.

I love the Dolphins and I'm always the eternal optimist, but I'm going to need a Keg of the Kool Aid to believe this Motley Crue will be alright.

WATER, HOW WOULD YOU LOOK IN 15 YEARS ?

I mean, Dan Henning really out thinks himself, we know Ricky was running all over them, then we switch it up start something new, which puts us in these punt situations, we get a drive going, then we just go away from what was working in the first place, really frustrating to watch, i dont know, but im losing faith in Henne, this is really a curse of Marino!

Offensive decisions have been terrible this year. this is what has been killing us.

Yesterday, all came full circle.

1) The crazy OC with his Wildcat and questionable game plan of passing and passing and passing
2) The garbage Special Teams
3) The Green QB with 2 stupid INTs almost in the redzone
4) The weak depth of the DL from bad drafts and FA Blunders
5) The coach gaffes from Sunglass Man on his 54 yd field when down by 13 and 1 qtr to go, the no red flag thrown

All problems noted since Draft Time.

7-9 here we come baby!

To Quote Dan Lebatard "Get ready for another decade of irrelevance"

ODINS,THANK YOU...HOW YOU LIKE BEACH BOYS?

If the interceptions that Henne threw were great plays by the defense one could say...bad luck on Henne's part, but two to a linebacker that everyone saw coming....give me a break!
What did Henne see? Have they checked his eye's lately or ever? I was a supporter of Saprano but he seems to have hit a wall as far as his coaching....he makes too many mistakes, doesn't make great corrections during half time and it's obvious he doesn't make good decisions concerning staff. I don't know if Cowher is the way to go...but I don't see the Dolphins ever being special with Sparano.

No on GRUDEN-

His act grew tired in Oakland and his Superbowl was a result of the coach before him there and a team of hungry Vets that had been knocking on the door. He was forced out of Tampa for a reason.

No on COWHER-

Too many times when these guys do the burn out retire thing and come back its an epic failure. They realize that TV pays well and keeps them close to the game. NO!

Part of the problem with changing GMs and Coaches ever 3 years is they turn over the personnell to their style and systems. THATS PART OF THE PROBLEM.

Penn isn't the answer- great guy, smart guy, but doesn't have the arm and benefited from the early days of the Wildcat!

Our defense has insufficient Veteran leadership. Oh but I forgot they drafted LEADERS. The look on their faces last night was oh sh*t, now what?

If anything as far as a coaching change it needs to be a young up and comer like the guy in NO or the guy in Pittsburgh.

Why feed the wolf when OBAMA will feed us all!

Go Phins!

Nice Read

HOME, THE TUna worked for his money .at least he did take 1-15 team to a bitter team not like satan of the world .

And Pat McQuistan doesn't block anyone on offense either. It's pick ups like this that are really costing this team. We gave up a draft pick for him and gave away Samson Satele (who can play guard) for virtually nothing when he was signed on the cheap. Meanwhile, 2 centers and a boat load of money later, we are weaker at center and guard. Just because you're familiar with someone doesn't mean he can play and that is this regime's biggest failure. Churning the roster for people you are familiar with in lieu of who you currently have rarely pays dividends.

EUREKA!!!!!!!!!!!!

Chad Henne needs some glasses, never really got cured from last's season eye injury against Pitt.

Thats why he stares down LBs, he is not focusing his eye correctly.

Simple solution.

Jason Taylor must have spit out his beer last night? Marino and the boys snuck out the back way by the middle of the 3rd quarter. F**K!

Don't feed the wolf ...Obama will feed us all!

yea but the end of our schedule is pretty easy other than the trip to NE and Jets. If we're 3-5 after 8 games we may have a shot at 9-7. Last year the wets got in at 9-7.

Look at this decade-

How many Quarerbacks??? any one a Franchise QB?

We get a excited about a real running back after decades and the coach runs him into Austrailia to smoke the Ganj?

1st and 2nd round bust too many to count?

Free agent bust that never pan out and leave us with big contracts?

Pineapple face sells the team to a Trump wanna be?

Saban pisses everyone off, blows the draft and fn quits on us?

Cam Cameron?

WHAY NOT US! I'LL TELL YOU WHY!

Special teams coach deserved to be cut.
More importantly the team needs some body to infuse them with pride in what they do. I can't believe that I didn't see one guy last night in the Dolphin side line, foaming at the mouth and wanting to take on the entire NE team on. Where are the leaders of the team? Other than Wake going 24/7 and running from side line to side line, I wouldn't give a plug nickel for any of them starting with the self appointed greatest line backer ever, Karlos Dansby. I can't believe...well it was an "I can't believe night."
They better get their collective heads out of their but's , put this embarassing event, of an otherwise proud franchise behind, and get ready for Green Bay.

Waterboy, I would add that you are missing all the misses in FA. Especially along the offensive line where they have continually cycled players for the past 3 years. Too many draft picks and money being spent at that position - they should have got it right by now.

I don't like Henning's play calling and Sparano is certainly no Lombardi. But ... this team's problems run far deeper than coaching. Dolphin fans should know by now that coaching fixes (JJ, Saban, and now Sparano) don't fix problems. This team lacks depth at just about every position and many of the starters just aren't good enough.

If Tony didn't make that move Ross would have fired him as well

(( INFUSE TEM WITH PRIDE )) MY A S S .THEY MAKE MORE MONEY THAN MOTHER TERIZA .

CROWDER....20 MILL
MARSHALL.....50 MILL

Crowder, McDaniels, Odrick, Francis and Jerry all missing for the last 2 weeks. Misi disappeared the last 2 weeks. The O line and defensive front 7 arent the same without these players who hopefully we get back after the break. special teams cant get any worse. No question Henne is the way to go for the rest of the year. there is no upside to using Pennington or anyone else. .500 or better is still very doable for this team. Most people would have expected us to be 2-2 to start the year looking at the schedule. Granted the 2 losses likely would have been at Minnesota and a loss to either the Jets or NE at hm vs losing the last 2 at home particularly the manner in which we lost both games.

That fixes everything. I feel better now. Super Bowl here we come.

Just for the record, everyone saying "Thigpen's interception"...Did anyone see it? Like really? What f***k interception? He threw it right between Hartline's numbers!! Now Brian, I'll give you the same advice I gave Sean Smith. Stop twitting so much and work on your craft. Cause this year, you suck bro. Should of traded you instead of Camarillo!

boy, you gals sound piszed.lol.. the phins are 2-2. fergie will come back in week 9,move starks where he is a pb'ler, thigpen will be starting and the phins will finish 10-6 and on a roll for being the hottest team in the nfl going into the playoffs which always ends up being the sb winner that season. go phins.

For those of you calling for Henne to be benched, you're all idiots. Nov 11th 2007, Peyton Manning threw 6 picks against the chargers. I dont recall him getting benched. Farve holds the record for ints, and I've never seen him get benched. They are part of the game, and every good quarterback is gonna have multiple pick games. That shouldn't overshadow his 665 yards passing the last 2 weeks. He's gonna be a star if our OC would stop killing drives.

Martin

Gruden was with Oakland 5 years

last 3 years
12-4
10-6
12-4

developing Rich Gannon who was one heck of a QB at that time

and built a real good team considering working with crazy owner Al Davis

Then took the reins of the Bucs
and put that team on the map (granted good job by predecessor)
but with Gruden that Tampa Market went from zero to Hero
All of central and west coast Florida was in Frenzy over the Bucs and had huge pride for their team

oh yeah, Gruden Won the SuperBowl also

Home knows as he visited places like UF Gainsville, Fl. and Tampa in Miami Dolphins Jersey and they were all like WTF?

Anyway
Home loves the guys ferocious style & personality and would welcome him over Grandpa, warm soup bellied Sparano

Martin, I have to disagree with everything you said fully

Lebron,

Great idea. The last QB that won us a SuperBowl wore glasses under his helmet.

Seriously, you can't lay ANY of this. Not one bit of this debacle on Henne.

He had the 3 ints, fine. 1 was an outright bad read and throw. The 2nd one, he was getting engulfed by the rush and didn't have room to get his feet set. Still, it's on Henne, if he would have put 6 inches more to the outside, big gain. The third one, the one that hurt us the most, was all Marshall. Even so, I'm not even down on Marshall for that one. Marshall was improvising, trying to make a play. That's what the great ones do, sometimes it works, sometimes it don't.

Look at all Bess's third down catches and conversions. Guess who was made those throws?

Defense's fault? I'm not buying that garbage either. Special Teams gave the patriots 21 and Henne/Marshall's pick six accounts for 28 of their 41 points.

I'm not pointing fingers at Henne, Ricky or Ronnie even. Not the defensive line, not even Dobbins(though Jason Allen did pull his usual falling down act at another crucial moment).

I'm pointing the finger for both of our losses at the prune juice slurping slickster and the special teams units, coaches and Players alike.

These are correctable things, but unfortunately, we're going to have to do our correcting on the fly.

Do you people realize you are asking to have a coach replaced after 4 games into his 3rd season... a coach who took a 1-15 team to 11-5 and the playoffs the next season... a coach who has kept this team competetive against superior talent like New Orleans and Indianapolis... Tony Sparano deserves more respect than he is getting. You idiots make me sick.

Henne might not be so bad, but he's throwing interceptions at an alarming pace. He's also not very good when pressured. He's got to know when to step up in the pocket to avoid outside pass rushers and when to throw the ball away. Until he fixes all of that, every defensive coordinator in the league will use the same game plan against us. Blitz and pressure. He needs to improve and he needs to do it soon. Or else you can kiss this season goodbye and wait for the draft.

Don't think I am not still down on Jason Allen. He whiffed on an attempted ankle tackle on Tate's TD return. He also went running at a receiver hwho already caught the ball. Allen again and slipped and fell in a carbon copy of Braylon Edwards big catch and run - luckily someone else was there to clean up down field, but this guy sucks a**. With a bye week to prepare - I hope Caroll's progression is good evenough to replace Jason Allen's fainting goat act -> http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=588849979264557085#

bp is doing a jj over here
martin
shula
#! montreal
spot on great posts this is year 3 of this regime and bp is bailing already.

I do agree with shula and Odin though. Pennington Should play until proven otherwise. He seems ready and 2-2 he can still bounce back and win big games for us. Henne is choking at crucial moments and instead of it being 21-6 going into half it was 7-6 all the inspiration bellicheck needed to get his team pumped. He has the tools i wont argue that but he isn't ready to use them yet at this level. I see it as a Brett Favre/ Aaron Rodger situation. Pennington's best football was only 2008 if he is in good shape I say change it up give Henne a breather. It was Henne's job to lose... What happens if (not when) this carries over to the Packers? and so on... Pennington should be on the radar.

for the record rewatch the tape
Jason Allen who makes spectacular ST tackles was pushed from behind as he was changing direction

agree Allen needs to wear longer spikes

but would u rather have sean still completely Sucks smith tackling?

just like Ricky who slipped and tackled himself 16, yes sixteen times in one season two years ago

Lebron,

Sorry, when I read that back it sounded like my last post was directed at you, it wasn't.

Just the part about the glasses-lol, my bad.

The way the defense played yesterday if u fix the ST and then the interceptions Pennington woulda destroyed NE with one TD, game management and leadership in QB the most underrated attribute a QB can have.

i am a Finsfan for life. when i evalute our team for the past 3 yrs under Parcel regime, i dont see any improvments! we still have questions about QB, O-Line, running game, TE, D-Line, LBs, SS, and DB. We have one pro bowler on the team and have no identity. we should fire Parcel and company and rebuild again. Look at the Jets, KC. New Orleans, Atlanta, ...these are examples of good leadership drafting and picking the right players. we got rid off our 2, 3, 6, and 7 th draft picks from last yr plus two other hig profile free agents. who is to blame for those decisions, the Fans!! our problem is with the leadership.

Armando

How many holding penalties could have realistically been called on opponents trying to stop Cam Wake last season and this season so far

Bet the number is close to twenty holds

and why was the flag picked up and holding call on the Cheatriots mysteriously dropped last night as Dave Hyde from the SS and others have reported?

Henne is the best quarterback on the roster without a doubt. But if the season gets away and he doesn't show improvement we'll have to at least consider drafting a QB. Granted, that's a worst case scenario but I'm just saying. And knowing Henning's play calling we probably won't throw a pass more than 5 yards downfield vs Green Bay so I'm sure Henne will have a very "efficient" game.

Probably Henne's worst game as a starter comes on the biggest stage. That's not a good sign. I think we would have lost that game even without the special teams gaffs. Or at best kept it close into the 4th quarter, which seems to be the gameplan every week regardless of the competition. Can anyone name the last game Miami won comfortably? Was it Oakland, Seattle, Tampa Bay, Buffalo? Nope those were all close games that came right down to the wire.

NJRICH, Sparano might not be a bad coach, but deserving respect for what exactly? He hasn't accomplished anything yet. Nobody in the NFL gets respect for being competetive. They get respect when you win. Winning is everything. You can lose by 35 points or you can lose by 3 points, but at the end of the day like our friend Tony likes to say, all that matters is winning. You think anyone will remember the Colts almost winning the SB last year? They were pretty freaking competetive. But they lost. All that people will remember is the Saints winning it. And in this case, all that we need to know is the Dolphins haven't won a playoff game since Dave Wannstedt. So I think it's kind of normal real fans are a bit frustrated. Until Sparano wins a playoff game, he hasn't accomplished jack sh**!

Cafinfan, Henne looks good no doubt he just isn't ready yet. Favre and Manning are allowed to throw that many picks becuz their previous resume SB rings ect. speak for themselves. It was also 3 years into both of their careers when they actually showed promise becuz of all those int's. I would agree if we didn't have Pennington on roster. Thigpen wouldn't cut it. Pennington is proven and now with an actual threat with B marshall and Bess playing great I think he could do some real damage just being a game manager.

do agree with shula and Odin though. Pennington Should play until proven otherwise. He seems ready and 2-2 he can still bounce back and win big games for us. Gotta disagree with everyone saying Henne should be benched. He played very good at the start of the game last nite, and the bigggest problem with the offense was the assinine playcalling. Which ultimately led to Henne making bad choices and those ints. I have never hated on Henning to this point, but I have finally realized how bad he really is. It's not so much the plays that he calls, but the times at which he calls them. He seems to just call random plays at random times. No running to set up play action; I mean seriously, enough already with the play action fakes on 3rd and long. Its not fooling anyone and only giving the defense more time to get to the QB. Henning doesnt seem to have any kind of rhyme or reason in his playcalling, no scheme, no plan, just go out there and wing it. It seriously reminds me of my high school football coach, which is a very bad thing. Hennings got to go.

Stay the course with Henne to Bess & Marshall

Henne will get better

not so much for old GEEZER OC Dan Henning

He certainly is the weakest link in our secondary. Clemons has so far been a pleasant surprise. Bell looks to me like he has lost a step or 2 though. Depending on the progression of Reshad Jones, I could see Bell, who is still one of my favs, reduced to a rotational role next season, or even later on this season. Also, if Reshad doesn't develop quickly enough, forget about draftin an ILB or RB in next yrs draft, we will be looking for a starting SS to replace YB...

Agree on Henning's playcalling but you gotta see how Henne literally stared at Ninkovich twice last night. He just isn't ready yet. Find fault with what i say if u want but I'm not seeing a reliable QB at all right now and don't see us making the playoff even with him this year... Give the guy some time to learn he is still young and needs to let the game slow down. I'm thinking if we drop three straight their has gotta be an issue. Henne didn't do anything spectacular to win those first two games either. A loss is a loss first guy responsible is the QB

Wish we could find a way to get Ozzie Newsome in Miami. Or Bill Polian.

Nikoom, it's obvious the refs are in Krafts/ Goodells pockets. Blatant cheating by ref on MNF too many "missed" flags Staring right at a guy who is grabbing the numbers of wake's back throws his flag becuz its so damn obvious and he had a reaction to what he saw. Refs confer no call BS the ref with that angle was all over that play. Cheeating

I don't see how this team goes 8-4 or 9-3 with the games that are on the schedule and I believe that's what it's going to take to make the playoffs. You can't have your team self-destruct the way they did the last two weeks, with division teams coming into YOUR building and expect to make the playoffs. You can't let a beat up Jets team come into our stadium and dictate the style of play and control the line of scrimmage. You can't let a struggling defensive Pats team come into our building and make the number of mistakes on special teams and offence that we dide last night and expect to win. We could very easily be 4-0 right now but instead we're just a mediocre 2-2 team who will have to play their butts off to make the playoffs. It's all very disappointing. We could have really put the Jets and the Pats in a bad spot and we let them off the hook. Special teams is a mess, the defence is on the right track and Henne and the offence have some things they need to improve.

Ron Burgandy,

You said it, "It's not so much the plays that he calls, but the times at which he calls them."

Your next comment however, I take offense with: "It seriously reminds me of my high school football coach, which is a very bad thing".

I was a High school(freshman)football coach and I was never as bad as Henning-lol.

I always coached to my kids strengths. I would run between the tackles to set up the sweeps or vice versa. I would run to set up the pass or vice versa.

Henning might have had a great offensive mind at one time, but it's obvious to me he's fading fast. You have to have your strong plays and your money plays. You use your strong plays to set up the defense for your money plays,ie "chunk yards". You pick your spots and take your shots. Henning just doesn't seem to get this anymore.

I'm probably wrong, but i seriously suspect it's due to a combination of Age, senility and Narcissism.

Wasn't everybody saying the Dolphins needed to use a draft pick on a tight end back in april? I guess they thought Nalbone was the answer. Yikes. Now they have this Shuler dude. Boy, that Hernandez kid sure looked pretty good last night. Another local kid who'll bring all of his skills outside of Florida. That's the difference between Miami and teams like New England, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, etc... They draft well each and every year. Pittsburgh lost their starting QB for the first 4 games and they almost went 4-0. New England scores 41 points and Brady is average at best and Moss doesn't even catch one pass. God I wish Miami would have a front office like any of those teams. In the NFL, Super Bowls are won in the offseason. And let's face it, Miami in the offseason is usually average at best.

And the guys on here need to stop whining and complaining about Henne. The truth is I don't know if he's the guy or not and neither do you. He's the future right now and that's all there is to it. Some of you want to scrap him and draft another QB next year. I say you're nuts!! We STILL don't know what we have in Henne. He gets the year to prove himself and then we evaluate him at the end of the season. None of us know how much of it is him and how much of it is Henning but it would be pointless to throw in the towel on this guy after 17 games. Yes he's making mistakes and yes he's making bad throws but this guy has good intagibles in terms of arm strength and smarts and he was a four year starter at Michigan. What is achieved by quitting on this guy now?

Montreal, it is fine to be frustrated, but it's another to be ready to fire the guy. If winning a playoff game is all that matters, then here is the results of some of the coaches everyone is asking for to replace Sparano... Gruden 2 seasons at 8-8, 3rd season makes the playoffs and wins 1 game. Bill Cowher 11-5 in his 1st year, 9-7 in his 2nd year, wins his 1 playoff game in his 3rd year. And how about Bellichick with his blistering 20-28 record through 3 years before posting his first winning season at 11-5 and finally winning his 1st playoff game in his 4th season. All I am saying is give Sparano more than 2 seasons to win a playoff game... if that is how you define a good coach.

Like the blog says, McQuistan did not block anyone of the field goal attempt. He crouched while the rush to his inside went untouched. On the kickoff return, Carpenter took a terrible angle and lost lane discipline, and on the punt block Carpenter did not block anyone on the inside stunt. The special teams breakdowns are primarily the responsibility of these two men. They are both former Cowboys. There is a reason they are FORMER.
Why does the Miami coaching staff think that Cowboys off-casts are going to make our team better? In any case, I would bet that Carpenter is released once Channing Crowder is healthy.

agree Craig M on very easily could have been 4-0

We realistically had both games Jets & Pats in the bag

Ricky & Ronnie fumbling in Jets game
D folding

ST setting new NFL SUCK record & Henne`s poor Int & management in Pats game

and Henning insisting on the WildCrap which is now averaging a whopping 1.6 yards per carry
(by next game might be under 1 yard)

and we shot ourselves in the foot

and not talking baby toe

Talkin bout shooting & shooting ourselves in the foot so many times that the leg is a worthless bloody footless stump

and so goes a fairly attainable 4-0

b

During the draft some knucklehead tried to insult me and bash me for saying this team drafted poorly. this team had 3 major flaws last year and didnt address any of them in the draft. i looked at this team and saw a mediocre team. i was called out as negative

Its clear that henning needs to go, i cant believe the calls last night,SP teams was horrible and there is no wonder he got fired, the game has not slowed down enough for Hennebut im not ready to give up on him yet. We need to get a faster running back, brown looks slow to me this year and ricky isnt goung to out run anyone, would have been nice to see a td in the jets game, then brown getting run down dont you think and a tightend would have been good to. there was enough of them last draft.

In defense of our draft I will say injuries have held us from seeing just what the draft will end up being. John Jerry has played well when he has played. Odrick had a good game vs Buffalo. We could have used both of them the past two weeks.
