Dolphins fire John Bonamego, promote Rizzi

The Dolphins have fired special teams coach John Bonamego and replaced him with assistant special teams coach Darren Rizzi, according to coach Tony Sparano.

The decision was made by Sparano overnight.

Bonamego was Miami's special teams coordinator since 2008. He was the coach most responsible for the poor play of the teams the past two weeks when the Dolphins had two punts blocked, had a field goal blocked and returned for a TD, and gave up a 103-yard kickoff return TD.

Rizzi joined the Dolphins in 2009 and had no previous experience in the NFL prior to that. Rizzi has been coaching in college since 1993 through  2008 with Colgate, New Haven, Northeastern, New Haven again as the head coach, Rutgers and Rhode Island as the head coach.

In announcing Bonamego's departure, Sparano called it a "tough decision," cautioned that "it ain't all broke," and "players also have to take responsibility."

There will be some changes with players also in the coming weeks although there are no specifics at this time. The Dolphins have used starters on special teams, including Tim Dobbins, Jason Allen and Cameron Wake.

"I want my core players to play better on special teams right now," Sparano said. "To be honest, if we need to put more starters in there, we'll look at that."

I recognize that some of you will view this move as a day late and three touchdowns allowed short. The special teams, after all, have struggled for years in Miami with last week's Jets game being among the worst of that.

In that regard, Sparano might have moved one week sooner.

But doing it today, after Monday night's meltdown which I described in my Miami Herald column as an epic failure, is better than nothing. It is a risk. Rizzi might not be the permanent fix. And as the assistant, he was part of the staff that authored the problem as well.

But perhaps he will oversee changes. Perhaps he will correct the issues with blocking schemes against line stunts that Bonamego clearly did not. I would start with Pat McQuistan, who simply didn't block anyone on one of the blocked kicks last night.

We'll see how it turns out.

Henne looked bad yesterday in some throws but he's better than any other qb in the post Marino era(Pennington not an aswer). I am pretty sure that most of you thought that being 2-2 at the fist quarter of the season was a reasonable record considering the schedule, of course we expected more after the first two games but yesterday and the weeks ahead are a test of the resilience of the team. let's see the next two after getting a conclussion.

Bill Parcells saw the Henne meltdown coming, the telegraphing, the keying on one receiver, the lack of progression reads, the late release.......but the "Coaching staff" (read Sporano) opted to stubbornly stick with him...hence...the "consultant" move; now TS is out on his own limb.. Firing the ST coach is a knee jerk by Sporano, and replacing him with the assistant shows no clue where the problem lies. Head coaches are mentors, not sideline cheerleaders; when we lose 4 out of the next 5, it will all be over, but the shouting. Mike Nolan, catch up on your sleep ...interim head coaches don't get much.

DEAR DOLFANS I FEEL SORRY FOR Y'ALL, I HOPE YOU CAN REGAIN FAITH IN YOUR LOWLY DOLPHINS!

AT LEAST Y'ALL WILL HAVE THE HEAT TO FALL BACK ON !
SINCERELY YOURS TRULY,

JETS AFC EAST TOP DOG :)

Belecheck makes Chicken salad out of chiken sh=t...We make sh*t!

This whole BS about being happy with 2-2 record?

Hell no!

This is year 3 of a supposed genius Parcells rebuild!

We lost 2 very winnable games especially given the other teams injury status!

NO not copping out to that Sh*tty excuse.

Year 3 of a rebuild after an 11-5 first year

F*** that I been waiting since 1974.

These were winnable games!

This team should not be in rebuild mode!

What has been answered in 3 years???

What is this the Miami Dolphins or the Miami "Silver Linings"?

time for my big cheesy meatball sub w/fresh mozzarell in hot french bread.

Dear Dolphin Fans, as you can see by my posts my worthless NY parents raised me with little brains and taught me to be like the majority of New Yorkers, a big FU@Kin worthless douchebag whose mentally challenged. Of course my Jets haven't done anything since 1969 but choke and gag on the big one, just like my mom does. But does that matter to me? Nooo, cause I'm a Jets fan from a state who A S S Holes like me are the norm. No balls, big mouth punk who has an IQ lower that equals the Jets Superbowl wins =1. But don't worry, my trailer is secure, my unemployment is secure and like all New Yorkers, my mom takes care of me and the family by spreading her legs for every guy out there. I'm a classless NY Jet A S S H O L E who just can't help it

I like sparano and I do not like ireland, but you have to wonder if Tony is the best guy for this Job before Henne threw his last INT, they were taking thier time going down the field, running the ball up the middle sometimes with no apparent urgency to score a quick TD, and some of that should fall on henne as well no one ever had to tell Dan to hurry when were down it is sad to see them in this state right now, maybe we would have been better off hiring someone other then Paecells, who never stays long enough to finish the Job, these guys were his buddies but they had no experience before and they have both shown that over the 2 years and plus of the GM with his bad draft picks and bad FA's and Tony with his game day decisions that he has made over the last few years and his constant shuffling of the O line last year and earlier this year, the thing is when I watch them play to me it looks like they can be close to being good but the coaching is just not there , Don Shula would win 10 games with this team and take them to the playoffs

the dolphins are pathetic from top to bottom. people spend a lot of money to go to a game and that's the garbage they put on the field. you people who are sold on henne, guess what, he fu3kin sucks. he will never be a winner in the nfl. please bench his sorry ass and put in pennington.

Sharma shoo garaglappa...we can sit here dy after day arguing what is the right move to make, who to fire, who to bench, and who to bring in....bottom line folks...we suck, we suck due to a bunch of different things...bottom line is we are not ready for post season play. And where did BP go?? He left the job when the job wasnt done. this is one of the only professions where you can leave your job unfinished and still get yourself 12mill....unbee-fokin-leavable

Hey ARPAS...no one cares queen...no one is talking to you, and neither will i after this message. Go be with your looser jets...you will be home during the playoffs this year anyway...GFY

ross needs to get rid of all the so called parcells disciples, including parcells and hire a coach with a winning resume. the little tuna has done nothing.

Sorry 77, but im one of those who pay a good chunk of money for seaeson tickets and i want no one BUT Chad Henne in there. By your standards Peyton Manning, Drew Brees and a lot of other QBs wouldnt even be in this league. Look back at those guys stats and see how they struggled early in their careers. Henne belongs in there and hope he stays.

henne's not even in the same class with those guys. the dolphins will not win with him at qb.how long is it going to take for him to develop? 5 years. we will all be waiting a long time to see a playoff run.

MY DIARY NOTES:

DEAR DOLFAN FOOLS AND TO MY MANY LOVERS:

ALoco,dolphin77,ARPAS12345,EP,AND ALL MY DOLFANS :)

I HAVE BEEN A FOOLISH FAN REALIZING THAT I LIVED IN THE PAST THINKING THE DOLPHINS WOULD BE GREAT JUST LIKE WHEN MY GREAT,GREAT, GRANDMOTHER LIVED BUT OBVIOUSLY I WAS WRONG!

ALL THESE YEARS HAVE BEEN IN DENIAL THINKING THAT ANOTHER PERFECT SEASON FOR THE DOLPHINS OR ANY SUPERBOWL CHANCES WOULD NOT OCCUR ANYTIME SOON AND MAYBE NEVER!

SO I DECIDED TO DEFECT TO THE DREADED J-E-T-S UNTIL MY MOTHER ASK ME TO JOIN ANOTHER TEAM IN THE FUTURE!

SINCERELY,

77, what do you know.chad henne ran for 302 yards and 2 TD ,MARINO was number 1 interception machine in fins history .blame the pizza guy who coached that S.TEAMS .

MARSHALL , IS HE TACKING A PASS HERE W/50 MILLION BUCKS ?

THE BIGGEST MISTAKE THAT ROSS MADE IS OVER ROLLING THE TUNA IN SIGNING MARSHALL .

The best special teams coach the Dolphins ever had is now the special teams coach for the Jets. Too bad Coach W let him go. How much money would it take to get him back?

77 IS A DUMB A SS NO ONE NEEDS HIM TO TELL US WHAT TO THINK OF HENNE .

Big mistake ever letting Westhoff get away. He's one of the best in the business. The guy that was with the Bills for years would have been great too but again we never seem to go aftre these guys. He ended up in Philly.

Thank God for you, Mando. Unlike your racist mate Cote. His line re Nankovich was frankly disgraceful and should never have been printed by the Herald. Not good enough.

ROCKETROD,

tell us the story of that line .some thing to chew on .

greg z....so what your saying is that we should go with Thigpen, and even though he might make a mistake here and there,it's ok because he's a young QB,and young QB's make mistakes!
Kind of like Henne,no?

Hate to say it but...

This team was finally unmasked on Monday Night Prime Time for all the world to see. Including the coaching, it is obvious now that this team has some serious deficiencies. Which were unvailed by the Pats last night.

I actually felt sorry for Cameron Wake playing his ass off but with no one to match to his play and help him from our front 7. If we lose the next few games I will be again hoping for a top 10 draft pick, sacrificing another wasted year.

Listen, game over, move on now. GBs next. And enough of the knee jerk reactions calling for Cowher and Gruden. Stay the course. That change now means yet another 3 year plan as house is cleaned and the new guy's guys are brought in. Heck, it will be halfway through this decade before we make a SB push again! I was flippin out as much as anyone last night, see my posts. But this is not the Titanic people. Stay the course.

The big problem is the QB and his top receivers are just not working together enough, they need to spend all of there off time at the practice field, good grief, if the money is there, why aren't they working day and night to get there act together. For the kind of money they get we shouldn't hear I need to play better. And to think the greedy players and league want to expand, the talent gets worst every year with this league, 32 teams are a joke, most teams only have about 15 players who are real good, don't add anymore teams. Bill

Has anyone heard the rumor the pats traded Moss to the vikings?!! WTF are the pats getting and WTF are they doing?!

Henne went 9-7 his first 16 games. That's not bad for a rookie qbs first year. Two weeks ago he throws for 363 yards aginst one of the best defenses in the NFL and he's the next great qb we've been waiting for and now he has a bad week and everyone wants to bench him. We need a new O.C. He calls for the Wild Cat on 3rd and 6 when Chad hadn't missed a pass. That stuff needs to stop. If Tony doesn't address these issues then he needs to be replaced. Maybe by an ex-Steelers coach. Finally these players need to stand up and show us what they are made of and come out in two weeks and win and win convincingly. They held Brady to 150 or so yards, Henne was 29 of 39, and our offense rack up over 400 years. Pats can celebrate their win but they have issues of their own. I'm still a fan hope that we can turn things around.

I agree with most of the comments. Henne had a bad day. So what... he has the skills to move the team. The Henning Playcalling stinks! Way too conservative and why not continue to run when the run works!

Special Teams lost this game. Case Closed.

Also, cut the Bill Cowher crap. He already said he was going to Coach ONLY the NY Giants. Bottom line is Coughlin is in his final year and will NOT be asked back. I predict more meltdowns for the Giants and he may not even finsish the Season there.

Cowher is NOT coming to the Dolphins. Carolina might stand a chance as his Family lives in NC, but that is about it.

Also, for you talking heads... Cowher would not have made a difference last night. The Dolphins Roster is loaded with absolute lack of talent at deep depth. This my friends is the Special Teams. They SUCK! It is so hard to be a Dolphin Fan for over 35years.

Everyone wants Henne out already? for Who? In that case dump Ronnie Brown. He is terrible and does not run hard. He dances and hesitates to hit the holes. How come Ricky can find positive yardage in the A Gaps (where some of you nonsense, never played a down of football Fans criticize the Center and Guards). Simple! He runs hard and north/south.

Yes, Brandon Marshall is a decoy and will be doubled the rest of the year. Bess is a good slot, but until Hartline becomes a threat (and he never will) and for God's sake get a Tight End. We don't have one that can block and catch, but Fasano sure can get Penalties. What is this obsession with Cowboy rejects. Even their Starters can't get it done.

I have never written a single response to any Dolphin Blog, but this is therapeutic. I HATE these Dolphins, but I will be watching next week and will continue to buy myself and family the Aqua and Orange gear... and maybe some Mylanta for the upcoming brutal games.

ALERT.....the deal IS DONE ......VIKINGS GETS MOSS,THE ONLY THING IS MOSS WORKING THE MONEY ISSUR W/GB ........LOOK FOR MOSS TO PLAY NEXT AND THE FOLLOWING VS FINS.

u guys ripped me up and down when i told u this was coming. u called me names when i said i hoped the staff was gone at the end ot he year. this simply isnt a good football team. another long year, im just praying ross replaces the entire staff. get someone in here who tries to win rather than who tries not to lose. worst loss ive ever seen as a fin fan

MOSS BACK TO THE TEAM THAT DRAFTED HIM IN 1998 .

IT'S ABOUT MONEY AND THE VIKING WILL PAY IT .

agree on henne, he has to play. let garbage brown go as free agent. beautiful trade by pats getting rid of moss at the perfect time. smart organization

MOSS WAS DONE IN NEW ENGLAND . NOW THEY HAVE HERNANDEZ AND WELKER and co

hey everybody we have stick with henne he will be good.lets just have patanice

bill, agree w/you .henne is the man . pats got ready of moss and we signed marshall for 50 million .

mike we arent good, and get ready for it to get alot worse with games at gb,cincy, balt and a home game vs pitt.

I can see his eyes!, I can see his eyes! So does everybody else. In order to teach somebody something they got to have an IQ over 80.

oscar,do you know your IQ ? YOU LOOK LIKE 123

hennes the least of our worries. we have our starting qb for years to come now.

I honestly don't think Henne is the problem. it's more the play-calling that Henning has been doing lately. I think he's getting too modern; and is forgetting the old fashioned football. if the RB is hot feed him the rock.. simple as that.. If RB #1 is not hot, then get him out of there and put RB #2.. Ricky Williams was hot last night and Henning opted to throw the damn ball when you needed to run the clock.. If Hartline is not getting himself open when they're double teaming Marshall then bench him!!. Forget about him being one of the fastest WR. We want playmakers and football players touching the rock.. play Wallace or Moore; they deserve a chance... leave D Bess where he is. I think that the injuries to the our 2 rookies (Jerry & Odrick) has really hurt us.. McDaniel's suspension didn't help either.. Go Fins.. it's a looooong season!!!

A Coach From NC- great point about Bong Pipe being a hard north and south runner. We don't do much zone blocking so it's important the running backs fire through the gaps, instead of waiting for the play. I would like to see Lex get some carries because he is the same sort of runner, and could help in the blocking dept. To be fair, Ronnie has had a good ypc up until last night. dfins006 had a good point, if a back is hot ride that horse until he starts to slow. We do have the luxury of having 4 running backs so fatigue shouldn't be an issue more then finding the hot hand.

Armando,

Last week you did a "One Final Look" at the Jets game.
No need to do that this week with the Patriots.
We are fragile right now and may not be able to stomach a rehash of those dreaded events.
Don't need anyone committing Hari Kari.

For all of you dopes who want to see Henne benched in favor of Penny, consider the following:

1. Chad Henne has completed a little over a year as a starting QB (17 games). He has all of the tools, but he's still young and learning. He's gonna make mistakes. Stop treating him like a 5-10 year veteran. It's frustrating, but have a little patience. He's getting better.

2. You used to complain after every game that Chad Pennington was killing the team because he lacked arm strength. Now, you pine after him like he's got a new arm instead of a surgically repaired arm. It's still weak. I like Penny, but his time is over unless Henne implodes or gets hurt.

3. In his last three games starting, Pennington is 0-3 w/ a four INT game (playoffs vs. Ravens w/a pick six). Not spectacular by any means.

The real culprit in Dan Henning and the offensive line. The allegedly improved O line does not run block as well as last years line. They pass block better. Henning has neglected to establish the run and has put too much on Henne too early. Look at Matt Ryan. He flourished his first year because Turner was running the rock very well making Ryan's job easier b/c defenses had to put 8 in the box. Last year when Turner was injured, Ryan struggled like a second year QB. Look at M. Sanchez. The Jets don't ask him to win the game. They have an excellent running game and let Sanchez make a lot of quick reads and three step drops.

Look at the number of attempts Heene has made in the last two games. Too many passes.

What's up fellas? Last night was embarrassing. I don't know what to make of it. Firing the special teams coach is a start but that wasn't the only problem. Miami isn't a good team. Bad QB, average offensive line. Average D line, average secondary. Average coaching. Miami is average/mediocre in too many areas.

Ok so when is April coming. Let's see Jake Locker, Andrew Luck, Ryan Mallett, Mark Ingram, Prince Amukamara, Robert Quinn, Akeem Ayers? We should be picking around top 12 again. Let's get a stud this time around and not trade back for skirt steak and boiled potatoes Odrick. I want Filet Mignon and Potato Croquettes with a $300 glass of wine. I want a freaking 2011 Corvette not a Chevy Cobalt. In the words of Langford WTF!

F**K Penny. He was 0-3, 2 INT's, 3 Fumbles and six sacks in 3 starts last year and godawful! He stinks! We can have Henne do the same thing as him. He did it in the first two games this year. I am still giving Henne a chance. The guy has had his bad games but so has everyone before him.

I think Henne has a great arm, can throw with accuracy when drilling it, is improving on his touch passes and with experience, will improve at reading defenses.

The thing that seems to always bother me about Henne, though, is he doesn't seem to have that pocket presence - that instinct to feel the pressure. It seems like he holds on to the ball too long, until he gets hit a few times, then he starts rushing it and going to his check down too early for the rest of the game.

For example, the sack last night, Marino would have taken a step up in the pocket, avoided the sack and probably made a big play down field... Henne does little shifting, hold on too long, until spooked, then plays the rest of the game hurried.

Is it just me? I don't think we should take him out as he remains our best option, but I am currently doubting he will be elite.

Aloco, what do you think? And how is the sub?

ALERT...THERE ARE 4 TEAMS ARE READY TO MAKE HENNE AN OFFER BY END OF THE YEAR .

go fins

Andy,

Im with you on that buddy. We need to quit trying to be smarter than everyone else by drafting all these obscure unproven players and get some real tangible talent out there. Someone who actually shined in college. I prefer Ingram or Mallet myself.

I'm not sure about my IQ, but in my office, with my patients, I know their's.

I agree that I am unsure if he will be elite but I want to give him the chance. All young qb's make mistakes. Many fans don't seem to understand that. Currently Sam Bradford has 6 TD's and 6 INT's and a 72 passer rating. His fans love him but he is just average right now. They understand their is going to be growing pains.

Lispin, agree w/every thing you said.

1-chad.p knows his time is up and he had bad games lately .
2-thiegpen isn't any good .
3-henne is the only option we have at a discount of 600,000.

my sub is good .when we have a fins loss ,we eat subs b/c no feel for cooking .what about you ,what did you have tonight ?

the wildcat killed his first drive last night ...trad r.brown .

oscar, how long you have been working as a nurse ?

We had chicken with salad and some cheese and bread... picked up the chicken too, no interest in cooking...

I hate losing before the by week - this feeling will be around for 2 weeks, then we are in for tough game after tough game..

People are talking about only being 1/4 of the way in - true, but have you seen our upcoming schedule? every game is going to be very tough to win. Not impossible, but we will need good to great defense, efficient error free offense and at the very minimum, average special teams... like 15th rank production... (I can't expect them to start leading the league - they don't have take it home returners)

Anyway, we will need games like that, and against teams like Pittsburgh, Baltimore and the packers, that might not be enough.

I am VERY uncomfortable at 2-2 right now..

anyhow, I didn't sleep much last night - so going to hit the sack. Night boys.

err, and girls.

ANYONE WHO THINKS HENNE SHOULDHBE BENCHED NEEDS TO GO KILL THEMSELVES RIGHT NOW! henne isnt bad guys idk why everyone is dogging him, yeah he had a bad gme but he has also had some really good games. and its only his second season as the full time starter

VIVA HENNE
GO FINS...........TO BE A FIN FAN IS TO STAND BY YOUR QB SINCE HE'S POTTING UP GOOD NUMBERS TRAITORS.

THE DAILY SHOW IS GOING TO BE GREAT TONIGHT .

The Dolphins are making too many questionable personnel moves. I remember when they let Ninkovich go and I thought it was crazy given he was always around the football. Sure enough he comes back to haunt us now we have Micah Johnson on the practice squad when all i saw him do was make plays. Same goes for Douglas and Grant. Also I would have kept Smiley and Thomas . I would also have kept Ginn for special teams speed like his is rare. They need to make better assessment of players and stop with the constant churring of the special teams roster!

#50 Bobby Carpenter needs to go this guy is worthless huge lack of effort last night
