Dolphins fire John Bonamego, promote Rizzi

The Dolphins have fired special teams coach John Bonamego and replaced him with assistant special teams coach Darren Rizzi, according to coach Tony Sparano.

The decision was made by Sparano overnight.

Bonamego was Miami's special teams coordinator since 2008. He was the coach most responsible for the poor play of the teams the past two weeks when the Dolphins had two punts blocked, had a field goal blocked and returned for a TD, and gave up a 103-yard kickoff return TD.

Rizzi joined the Dolphins in 2009 and had no previous experience in the NFL prior to that. Rizzi has been coaching in college since 1993 through  2008 with Colgate, New Haven, Northeastern, New Haven again as the head coach, Rutgers and Rhode Island as the head coach.

In announcing Bonamego's departure, Sparano called it a "tough decision," cautioned that "it ain't all broke," and "players also have to take responsibility."

There will be some changes with players also in the coming weeks although there are no specifics at this time. The Dolphins have used starters on special teams, including Tim Dobbins, Jason Allen and Cameron Wake.

"I want my core players to play better on special teams right now," Sparano said. "To be honest, if we need to put more starters in there, we'll look at that."

I recognize that some of you will view this move as a day late and three touchdowns allowed short. The special teams, after all, have struggled for years in Miami with last week's Jets game being among the worst of that.

In that regard, Sparano might have moved one week sooner.

But doing it today, after Monday night's meltdown which I described in my Miami Herald column as an epic failure, is better than nothing. It is a risk. Rizzi might not be the permanent fix. And as the assistant, he was part of the staff that authored the problem as well.

But perhaps he will oversee changes. Perhaps he will correct the issues with blocking schemes against line stunts that Bonamego clearly did not. I would start with Pat McQuistan, who simply didn't block anyone on one of the blocked kicks last night.

We'll see how it turns out.

Here's what I say about Henne. We just don't know, and we won't know until at least another season's worth of games. Aaron Rodgers needed time. Drew Brees needed time. Elway sucked at first. Many great quarterbacks are not instant like Marino and Brady were. Until we know more, it sucks and hurts. Except in those moments when he's awesome, which does happen.

As for numbers, Aloco is right. Henne's right there with most of the other younger quarterbacks. Five td, five interception.

Jeff Darlington noted that in 2003 Pennington threw 5 interceptions against the Pats. Interceptions are inevitable and even elite QBs have lousy games. Marino can attest to that. I'm not suggesting Henne is elite yet. The jury is still out, but I still like what I see in him.

So in theory: if Henne's 3 interceptions were TDs instead, we would still lose with the score of 41-35. It was special team that did us in.

Armando,

Your quote "Special teams? It looked more like Special Ed." was Offensive. I certainly hope that you will never be in the position to have a callous judgment put on you! Why don't you get a real job and give up the gossip? Oh yeah, because you don't have a shot at a LEGITIMATE sports position.

HERALD SPORTS, GET A REPORTER FOR THE DOLPHINS - THE DOLPHINS FAN FORUMS ARE A BETTER SOURCE OF INFO THAN THIS PIECE OF DUNG.

Yeah as far as screaming for Pennington...anyone remember the Playoff game against the Ravens? Ed Reed? C'mon Man!

Go Phins!

I'm Martin and I approve this message.

Anyone and i do mean anyone who thinks that 17 starts are enough starts to make any serious judgments about the future of a quarterback is an absolute idiot.

Go check out Peyton Manning's win-loss record was after 17 starts.

The kid has all the tools to be a perenial Pro-Bowler. Real fans need to be patient with the kid...you cannot expect perfection game in and game out...

What will make the difference will be how he grows and what he learns as a result of making mistakes.

hopefully this bye week will do us some good. Losing Odrick certainly hurt. We'll get him and Crowder back, that should shore up some things in the front seven.

Henne will be fine. He needs time to continue to develop. He needs a playmaking tight end and perhaps a better receiver opposite Marshall. To me, we can be better if we have the chance and draft Mark Ingram out of Alabama next year!

Parcells is notorious for being able to build a team, but not for getting it over the hump to the playoffs. If we do start looking for a new Head Coach at the end of this season, I recommend the OC for the Jets!
Rizzi needs to go to his local bookstore and buy a copy of "Special Teams Coaching for Football for Dummies"! And, try not to make the same dumb mistakes the other guy did.
Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams: Your treads starting to show. Stop dancing around and hit the dang hole. And, don't fumble!
Let's get organized people, get your heads outta your butts and get into the game!
Coaches: Game Plan!!! And, make corrections! When things get into a rythm, leave it alone! Quit trying to be a genius. Be a GOOD COACH instead!
Oh well, there's always next year...are we on the clock yet?

Hire Cowher and give him 5 years to turn this mess around

HENNE AS OF RIHT NOW IS A TOP 10 QB IN HIS 2nd YEAR.
OVER 68 COMPLETION PERCENTAGE

OVER 85 QB RATING

ALMOST 1,000 YARDS AND THAT's WITH TWO VERY BAD GAMES TO START THE SEASON.

HE SHOWS GROWTH AND I CAN ONLY GUESS BEING HUMAN HE WILL MAKE MISTAKES.

BUT I GUESS HE's NOT ALLOWED TOO.

THEY SAY 3 YEARS OF STARTS A QB SHOULD KNOW WHAT HE's DOING.

TO ME HE's AHEAD OF THE GAME

MARSHALL IS TOP 7 IN YARDS AND HE WILL GET HIS CHANCES ALSO YOU CAN't SAY YOU DON'T HOLD YOUR BREATH EVERYTIME HE CATCH A PASS BECAUSE HE FIGHTS FOR YARDS.

RICKY and RONNIE ARE BOTH OVER 4 YPC.

BUT WAIT IT GETS BETTER BECAUSE THE SKY IS FALLING THE SKY IS FALLING!!!!!!!

Im willing to be patient...but Ron Burgundys point about the play calling is salient...look at WHEN the call is made...its normally a momentum stopper for sure....Mark in Toronto is also spot on...ppretty soon BM will get fed up with being starved for a whole HALF and then being thrown pies...he will eventually rightfully explode at the play calling....and everyone will be saying he is a cancer..when really he will be 100% correct...you watch.....

With Rizzi taking Bonamego's place, it seems to me like nothing has changed. They replaced an Italian with an Italian who has already been there and done nothing. We need a German military man in there with some war strategy.

Uh, yeah because Germany did so well at waging war last century...

When you get older you are less inclined to take risks. Your wins get smaller and smaller. They are making Henne play like an old man. He is aiming the ball. Staring at receivers like that reciever is the only guy on the field. No pump fakes. Flat footed. I don't care what his stats say. He looked those INT's right into the hands of the defender.

Fire the OC.
Thanks for setting a nucleus but fire BP. We don't need the advice of a frail old man.

Brandon Marshall SHOULD start being a cancer. He SHOULD start harping for the ball more, calling out the OC and the team. It's just plain IDIOTIC not to highlight him in the offense. There's 4-5 true superstars on this team (Long, Ricky, Marshall, Vontae and Dansby), but only ONE TRUE GAMEBREAKER...Brandon Marshall. For him not to be the most utilized player on the offensive side of the ball is criminal. And I frankly don't want to be a fan of a team who pays millions of dollars to trade for one of the top 3 receivers in the NFL (and probably 1 of the top 10 all-time WR) to be a blocker. I've seen this team misuse players time and time again, and I'm not standing for it anymore.

So, please Brandon, one more game goes by where you don't get ONE TOUCH in a half, and please, for me, start crying and holding out and doing everything you did in Denver so this team will get sick of you and trade you to a team that WILL UTILIZE your amazing skills. I don't want to see a great player's career derailed because some moron OC doesn't know how to use him. FIRE HENNING...TODAY! ANYONE will be better than him when it comes to this team (BRANDON MARSHALL'S TEAM)!!

And don't give me any nonsense about Henne throwing INTs and can't get the ball to Marshall. That's pure BULLSH*T! Unleash Henne, stop handcuffing him with those stupid screens to the RB or Bess for losses (since EVERY team we face knows EXACTLY what we're doing), use the run to set up the pass (NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND) and GET THE BALL TO BRANDON AS A TOP PRIORITY WEEK IN AND WEEK OUT!

I was listening to john clayton and he had some good pts
He said ireland ans sparano are in panic mode. Canning bona was a bad move and benching henne would be worse. The team is going to continue to get coached scared not to lose to avoid being canned by Ross.

JUSTIN CREDIBLE had the best post re: Henne.

I stand by him. he has done nothing to merit getting benched.

The problem you people that are calling him to get benched are you hold him to the level of Manning and Brees, when that isn't fair. Hold him to the level of Sanchez, Trent Edwards, Joe Flacco, Matt Ryan. All qbs of a similar age.

And for god sakes, when a bull of a runninng back is averaging 7 yards per carry - GIVE HIM THE DANG BALL!!!

Lebron, the decision has been made .this is the last year of sparano and co inc ireland .they are becoming sort of toxic .

mark, what about shorting oil after the data is out at 10;30

Mark in Toronto, agreed. But Ricky's average was closer to 10 yds. during the 1st half (even more reason he should have gotten the ball).

Absolutely right about Henne not getting benched. But he'll be no good if they don't have him throwing more to Marshall. You can come back if you're down 13 points EASILY with a quality WR like Marshall, all you have to do is pass to him. But Henning is not known for his amazing pass offensive schemes. So, I'm not sure what they can do, as long as Henning is OC, to change the character of the offense. As long as that old man is in the chair, Marshall will not be used appropriately, and Henne will continue to struggle.

The ONLY good solution to this problem is to get rid of Henning (sooner rather than later).

DC, agree with everything you say. But it's not that hard to get a receiver the ball if you really want to. For example, that wide receiver screen they throw to Bess, that play is always there as long as the lead receiver gets his block. Also, on a crossing pattern, you can't stop the receiver getting the ball as long as the OL holds up the blocks. These are plays in the Dolphins playbook. If the opponent is paying extra special attention to a receiver, you can run these plays.

In addition, if your RB IS AVERAGING 7 YARDS PER RUSH, KEEP GIVING HIM THE DANG BALL AND MAKE THE OPPONENT BRING AN EXTRA MAN DOWN INTO THE BOX, THUS FREEING UP MARSHALL ON A PLAY ACTION!!!!!

I like Chad Henne but I feel that Tyler Thigpen gives this team another option which is really hard to overlook his ability to run with the ball. Many times on third and short how nice would it be for the QB to pick up the yardage on his own.

should try and deal brown before we let him go in offseason. sad season to come. guessing around 7 wins so top 15 draft pick hopefully. lets get rid of the staff and get some guys in here who try to win. we have become the joke of the nfl right now

7 yards a carry is not a true average because of one long run and another decent run.Williams has also been prone to fumble at the most inopportune of times re: previous week and all of last season.

Ronnie Brown had a pitiful 27 yards on 11 rush attempts.

On 4 passes out of the backfield Williams had almost as many yards as as his entire body of work rushing on Monday.

Clearly CFL fan Mark, your opinion on rushing the football with Williams is jaded. You must have fallen in love when Williams when he played in Canada after getting kicked out of the NFL for 4 suspensions for illegal drug use.

Henne had over 300 yards passing and two touchdowns in in 3 1/2 quarters.
The Pats secondary was the best option for attack and winning the game through passing the ball.
However Henne had basically only two bad throws and Marshall gave up on one costly route causing another interception.
Henne could have easily had 400 plus yards and won the game with a bit more accuracy and ball management. Henne had some mistakes by receivers route running or dropping balls for NFL easy catches.

Special teams for the Dolphins set new NFL low records across the board.Special teams record meltdown clearly caused the loss.

Williams would not have been the difference maker in this game, Hell he does not even have a rushing touchdown all season. Do not think Williams was going to suddenly to score 4 touchdowns in the second half to win the game.

So please stop fawning all over Williams and keep it real.

From Don Banks:

"• Maybe now everyone will stop telling us what a great young quarterback Miami has in Chad Henne. The third-year veteran is not there yet, and those back-to-back home-field losses to the division rival Jets and Patriots illustrated it vividly.

Henne threw for a combined 665 yards in his past two games, but big deal. The Dolphins lost by eight points to New York and 27 points to New England. Henne only had 296 combined passing yards in season-opening road wins over Buffalo and Minnesota, but he didn't throw an interception either. He's had four the past two weeks, and they've been killers for a Dolphins offense that doesn't remotely have that kind of a margin for error.

Can we let Henne, 25, win a big game for once before someone tries to convince us of how bright his NFL future is? He just went head-to-head at home with his division's two best quarterbacks, Mark Sanchez and Tom Brady, and he didn't measure up.

Henne a top 10 QB?

BWAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

Get me some of that punch!

I guess if you like robots who lock onto their receivers, hold the ball too long, and throw more ints than tds then he is a stud!

Williams was averaging a little over 3 yards per carry after the first three games, complimented with 2 costly fumbles and 0 rushing touchdowns.

Prior to the game, CFL fan Mark wanted Ronnie Brown to rush all night.
Well, Ronnie Brown had his chance with 11 runs for only 27 yards.
So next week will CFL fan Mark be calling for Hilliard or Cobbs to lead the Dolphins to victory?

Think Dan Marino has a different opinion on how the Miami Dolphins should win with Henne to Marshall, Bess, Fasano and the two running backs catching passes out of the backfield, now that Marshall allows the screen pass to come into play.

Home, nobody is talking to you, go FUKK yourself!!

Williams my ASH, you're an idiot. There's not a single team in this league that can win a game without the help from the running backs. Ricky Williams had a 1,000+ yd. season AFTER TURNING 30 yrs old (you can count the other RBs in this league who have done that on one hand). Anyone with eyes could see that Ricky was hot in the 1st-half, and should have been given the ball (as Henning likes to say, "feed the stud!"). On the 2nd INT drive, the ball was at Pats 30 (or 27, something like that). Ricky just had a couple long runs. Why NOT give him the ball? Why NOT keep letting him power it in if he's getting positive yardage? I have no problem with what happened AFTER the run back for a TD in the 2nd-half putting the game at 20-7. The Dolphins had little choice at that time to air it out. I also don't have a problem with passing more either (see my earlier posts).

But I DO have a problem with you saying Ricky isn't a difference maker or an exceptional RB. No, he's not Chris Johnson at this stage in his career. But he's still one of the top all-around RBs in this league, still an effective pass-catcher out of the backfield, and still a good pass blocker when called on. So your hating on Ricky is way overboard and far from accurate.

Home, at least post under your name dude

DC, pay no mind to Home, AKA WMA, AKA Moron, idiot loser paranoid dumb@ss inbred POS

"There's not a single team in this league that can win a game without the help from the running backs."

Unless of course you are playing the Miami Dolphins. Then you just wait for their stellar QB to throw ints, rbs to fumble, dbs to fall on their face, or special teams to implode. If that doesn't work their OC is bound to send in wicky wacky formations to snuff out drives or their HC will call ill advised timeouts.

Choking Dolphins.

team is a mess, period. sad sad season

bill_cnnrs, you finally said something I agree with. Ronnie isn't the answer. We need some new blood at RB. Not saying he's not good, but he's getting worse. I agree we should try to trade him before the season's up, hopefully for a draft pick, and we can draft a younger RB that can help the team more.

Another plus of losing Ronnie, that would mean the Wildcat is being put in the storage locker for good! Thank God!

bill, save it. we are 2-2. check the standings, a lot of teams are 2-2 or worse.

stop your crying and put a t**ty in your mouth to stop your whining.

a lot of teams have lost games they should have won. see indy losing to jax.

i am not bailing or giving up. is this team being run the way i'd run it from a personnel standpoint? no, but i'm not bailing!

Cobbs has been garbage this year. He is clearly lost more than a step after his blown knee. He has been terrible on ST and return game. In game he has aligator arms and killed Captain Henne with his lack of effort on that 2nd int.

Time to insert Lex Hillard into the fold.

Is anyone concerned on Bell's new found whiffing on tackles. He is either getting his arms run thru or falling down.

And When the hell are we getting another CLEAT GUY!

Ok, I admit it, I don't know my ass from a hole in the ground. I do know about other guys holes though. I come here and talk shyt only cause my Jets team has been sukin c o c k since 1961and I need to prove what a big guy I am. When in reality I am like all New Yawkers, a big Fu@kin worthless P u s s y. That's just me, a coward in life, a coward behind the keyboard. Maybe I will get brain cancer and die a shytty painful death. One can only hope since I am nothing more then a big phony.

I Think our Defense will excel against GB.

I like the strategy to rush a few guys and have 5-6 in coverage.

Green bay will try to pass for 400 yds, but if Jason Allen can find a way not to fall down we should be ok.

The return of Mcdaniels and Odrick would be huge for the running game. Solai and Starks could rotate and be fresh and stop the run.

I am hoping Clam Chowder returns in style.

Why isnt Micah Johnson active? I saw Spitler guy getting manhandled on ST

Home, I make more money in a week than you make in a month, now fawk off. before I pee in your mouth and treat you like the little biatch you are.

Yeah, I'm concerned about the falling down, too. I was hoping some of that against the Jets was due to the stupid infield. Bell has been one of the best tacklers on the team. And I'm sick of seeing Jason Allen sitting on his butt every time the wideout makes a break. Is it really a cleat issue, or is Jason Allen the same guy we've always thought he was? Vontae's got the same equipment and looks fantastic, doesn't he?

Hey Penne Bangers.

Didnt Penne turn into an INT machine against the Ravens in 2008?

Give Captain Henne a chance, this will be his 18 game.

Ol Man Henning has him confused and dazed with the clever dink and dunk and wildcat fetish.

Thigpen? Please child....

Look at the in fighting amongst the little fishies. Don't you guys get used to the season being over in October?

Pathetic.

Pretty sad when your number one fan is from Canada. Eh! Home is getting slapped around by an unemployed CFL fan. Tisk tisk.

Jason Allen will be tested all season long.

Benny Sapp is a joke, so I think Nolan Caroll needs to come into the fold ASAP at nickle.

Still, how come Hooker Detective Put Will Allen on IR?

Surely he will get picked up by the Pats next year.

Pennington's not the answer. We need Henne's decision-making to speed up to make the best use of his big arm. I wonder if all the check downs and dink and dunk throws (especially when receivers are wide open down the field) aren't a function of Henne trying to be Pennington.

Home, I will be coming to South Florida soon. You want to meet up? I'd love to meet you man, really I would. we can talk about chemtrails and your aluminum foil hats. Do trailers count as real estate???

Fins have to find a way to come out 4-4 after the next four games which.

I can see the Jets losing 2 or 3 of the next 4.

Moss can take a dump on Rivas Island once again on Monday

hey toronto mark...i think u need to do more money talk research before you spew that canadian bacon out of your mouth because clearly you making a reference to how much you make in a week to month comparison clearly states you are in the very low mid range...get a life and bet you will find you dont make sheet compared to most peeps. you cant roll with the big boys little one.

Home you little troll, keep talking you moron. It's easy to hide behind a computer screen.

Your mom/wife is calling for you.

You've taken up enough of my day.

And cowkilla, I never said I was rich, just said I do better than Home obviously. I think everyone on this blog makes at least 3 times as much as Home because last time I heard, people who live in trailers, bang their moms, wear aluminum hats and ask if you "would like fries with that" aren't in the highest tax bracket.

Of course my sleazyHo of a mother has taken more loads from Dolphin fans then any women I know

My little Mark will be in Florida soon.

I would like to set up a play date with some of his friends. He will bring Tim Hortons and a roll of hockey tape a peace offering.

If anyone has cheap tickets to the Panthers he would be happy to swap in exchange for some lessons on how to run an effective NFL offense.

Stop being a little sissy boy

We all know you said 4-0

You get ALOT wrong, now introduce Mark to
that nice young boy you have stay over

Not calling for hennes head, not his fualt he has to go in and out the game and then line up as a Wr to suit hennings wildplaykiller drives. Henne didnt play well but i dont expect him to put manning type numbers with this offensive system, i do agree that marshall MUST take a bigger role in this offense, doulbled or not ,having him become a factor in this offense is evident in trying to establish any consistancy
with our passing game, But it doesnt help much if we have NO running game. Miami has really dug themselves a huge climb in the afc east and honestly they need a LOT of help to get back in this race, still early enough but their schedule out of the bye is brutal. And thank god miami makes the smartest decision of the year by firing ST's coach after that debacle monday night, now if henning would just decide to step away from the game, we will all be better for it in the long run.

PENNINGTON RUMOR...
their is merit to it. first henne looks lost, does not have enough knowledge of the offense to take control, no chemistry with recievers as it looks like they don't even practice together, stares down recievers, he looks like he doesn't even want to play. he looks slow, plays with no desire and does not manage the game. believe it or not I am a henne fan and have hope, BUT pennington would manage the game and make the offense a whole lot smarter, the only thing is that he would negate all the money spent for the deep ball(marshall), and ED REED showed everyone how soft pennington's arm really is. if someone had an answer to pad his arm strength issue, then it's a go. heck, maybe it's a go anyway, cause henne isn't biting as a pup. the guy is getting paid big money but does not care about improving himself, doen't he realise that HE is key player to move miami forward. if he doen't have that fire to win, if he doesn't compete against opposing secondaries then shame on him. i wasn't a fan of sanchez simply because he looked to small, but he has his game on, he's just waiting for the corners to watch his eyes so he can manipulate it. is our assistant coaching that bad? do we need a new QB coach?, what are these guys doing?

there has to be a reason parcell's is down on henne, maybe it's one of the above mentioned problems.

How about hiring PRESTON PARKER from florida state. Or maybe Travis Hunter boynton beach, florida. Both of these guys are fast and make plays on special teams.

WE NEED TO CHANGE THE DOLPHINS LOGO TO A KILLER WHALE, MARINO BACK AS QB,REX RYAN AS COACH,WE ALSO NEED THOSE TWO PLAYERS THAT BEAT THE DOLPHINS ON MONDAY NIGHT IN OUR TEAM,AND THE STADIUM RENAME ,JOE ROBBIE STADIUM, AND MAYBE YOU'LL MAKE IT TO THE PLAYOFFS ":)
