Referee from Pittsburgh explains fumble ruling

Referee Gene Steratore spoke to the pool reporter about today's controversial call that was the difference in score between the Dolphins and Pittsburgh. The Steelers won, 23-22 on a field goal made possible when they kept the football following what looked like a fumble in the end zone that was recovered by Miami's Ikaika Alama-Francis.

The refs initially called the play a TD. Then they overturned the TD and said it was a fumble. But they didn't complete the job by giving the ball to Miami.

"Naturally, the ruling on the field was a touchdown by Pittsburgh," Steratore said. "After review it was confirmed in replay the ball did come loose and it was a fumble prior to the ball breaking the goal line. That's where we go into the second aspect of that. In order to overturn this and give another team the football, I have to have clear video evidence of that team recovering the fumble. So when a little short segment of what I said out there. That is what I explained. We did have a fumble, but we did not have video evidence and a confirmation on who recovered the football so we changed an aspect of the play by not awarding Pittsburgh the touchdown. Miami is not charged a time out because we changed an aspect of that play, but we could not award the defense in this situation the football because we don't have video evidence of the defense recovering the ball."

Steratore said officials could not determine who recovered the ball because, "it is a pile of bodies in there and you don't have a clear recovery."

Asked again by he could not determine who recovered the ball, he said, "We confirmed that there was a fumble and we not able to confirm a clear recovery by the defense."

Steratore, by the way, was born in Washington, PA., which is 30 miles outside of Pittsburgh. He still lives and has a business in the region.

when the play happened, i was thinking this is great. There isn't a huge pileup of players and you COULD see we recovered the ball. I was all excited that if he fumbled we'd be all set. Clearly a fixed game with this ref. NFL should not allow homers to be head ref especially in a game with their team. He might try to be honest even, but his heart is with Pittsburgh and in a close call he's going with them. I still think he knew better since the video evidence is clear. Even more disturbing is Steeler Scott saying he recovered it and the only hands on the ball were Steelers' . Wow. NFL has really come to this. Not the game it used to be and its all about money and who they want to win, aka Jets this year

Changing coaches mid-season with a 3-3 team would lead to a disastrous season's end. But the play calling does need to go from playing to not lose TO playing to win.

The most amazing part of the sideline angle replay was that the Ref signaled Touchdown in the first place? He was shielded from seeing the ball? He never actually saw it cross, how could he?

We got f'd and our two minute drill is pathetic.

HENNE PLAYED GREAT
THE COACHES DID THEIR JOB

THE REFEREE THE FRIEND OF THE RAPIST DID US IN .

Henne now has 19 starts, pain. He's 9-10. But it was Henning, not Henne, who cost us this game. Along with Geno Steratore from pissburg.

Whats the other league? the UFL? lets quit this league & start watching that. Haha.

Do you guys really believe that if we get the ball on the 20 we run out the clock? No way, we all know the drill 3 ronnie runs into the line, Phins punt. From there who knows what happens. We look like the Detroit Lions whinning after a poor referee call. Truth is we had the ball inside of the 20 3 times and they forced us to kick. We also had the ball at the end of the game and decided to run a draw??????? then hurry a play instead of waiting untill the 2 minute warning. The referee call is a covenient excuse, and it burns. But as long as we are content kicking Fg's we can enjoy our place in mediocraty.

THE RFEREE RAPED US IN DAY LIGHT .

U guys can whine about being cheated until the tops of your heads blow off. True of the matter is that we faced a more complete offense and lost today.

Hines Ward 7 catches 131yds 1td

Mike Wallace 2 catches 53yds 1td

Wallace may have had 1 of those catches go for 0 yds. But the one lightning strike sizzled us.

We gotta get a wr like that. We have zero lightning strike ability on our offense. Guys thats the primary reason we settle for so many field goal against good defenses.

Your just not going toconsistently put up 7pts against really good defenses without lightning strike ability.

You will NEVER EVER see that call again in a NFL game.....Just like the Tuck Rule...

DYING BREED , WHY DO YOU IGNORE THE CALL WHEN IT'S CLEAR IT WAS WRONG .WE CAN TALK ABOUT OFFENSE AFTER WE SETLLE THAT CALL .

THIS REMINDS ME OF THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME WITH MIAMI AND OSU WITH THAT BIG TEN REF WHO IS FROM OHIO AND HAS BEEN REPRIMANDED A FEW TIMES BY THE NCAA WITH BAD CALLS AND WAS REFEREEING THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME. WE ALL KNOW ABOUT THAT LATE PHANTOM FLAG THAT CAME OUT 10 SECONDS AFTER ALL THE UM FANS WERE ON THE FIELD CELEBRATING THE GAME ENDING PLAY.HERE WE GO AGAIN , THE REFS FROM PITTSBURG NO NEED TO SAY ANY MORE

my take is they have to award the ball to someone.
if they award the ball to pitt.,which they did, then they got to give them a td,which they didn't.
if they award the ball to miami, which they didn't, then it's on 20.
if they don't award the ball to anyone, which is what happened, then the refs didn't do their job and cost a team a possible win and should be chastised for not doing their job.

I just saw roethlesburger say he had the ball at the bottom of the pile and that's a lie, he wasn't near the pile.
and tony saprano just mummbled something instead of screaming for justice.

A most wonderful afternoon.

LMFAO all day and night.

Miserable fish. They would be right at home in old Shea stadium .. choke choke choke.

DYING, OUR TEAM DID GREAT TODAY VS THE BEST TEAM IN THE NFL .

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE CALL ??

There is no excuse for the officials being unable to determine who recovered a fumble on the field. Should the Colts have been awarded the ball after the Saints onside kick at the Super Bowl? No, you dig into the pile. Unacceptable even for high school football.

BOYCOTT THE NFL
THEY ARE STEALING YOUR MONEY
OF COURSE ROONEY"S TEAM WINS WITH big BEN
THAT CALL WAS THE GAME
FIX WAS IN
I HEARD IT FROM VEGAS
ROSS SHOULD SUE TJHE NFL FOR FRAUD!

is there a particular reason my posts are only getting posted about one-third of the time? I'm going to have to start copying my posts before i actually submit them. This is just bush-league Miami Herald.

We lost on a shitty call but you guys want to come up with another reason we lost

no way you losers manage a first down even if it was turned over ... another vacation road win for the afc in miami ... just like the pro bowl ... pack up your family for a few days on the beach and enjoy a win at the expense of Mr. Ross crew. Too easy.

Enjoy the moral victory ... its all you have to cling to

Guys, Dont forget Miami got the Ball back with 2 minutes and 30 seconds after Pitt. Scored, The Refs did NOT job the fins(If they had they would have given them the TD saying the whistle blew, play dead or some B.S) But what really killed the fins was the inability to score TDs......

1st fish home win will come in December.

Bwaaaahahahahahahahahahaha.

beendrums, you r right ,we lost on shitty camm and every ONE TRYING TO BE MR COACH AND FIGURE ANOTHER REASON FOR THE LOSS .

We knew going in that they were gonna pass the ball. So what if Ward had 7 catches? What did Mendenhall do? 37 yds. We harassed the roofie-meister all day. Kept kicking FGs because of an old, lame-ass OC. But, I say we did enough to win against the big bad steelers to win and got fk'ed like a Roethlisberger chippie.

if we got the ball after the fumble, yea we'd run 3 times from the 20 yd line. Burn clock. force Pittsburgh to burn their 3 TOs. Punt it away & force them to score a FG w/ under 2 mins & no TOs left. Thats a lot better situation than Pittsburgh having a FG attempt from the half-yd-line hand delivered to them from a hometown ref. Definitely not a "convenient excuse"

Aloco,

I dont ignore the call. Im looking at why are in a situation where a possibly blown call leads to us losing in the first place. Aloco this game is conclussive proof why we need a lightning strike wr on the other side of Marshall.

Steelers even showed us what a difference it makes with Mike Wallace 53yd td to compliment Hines Ward 7 catch 131yd 1td effort.

By the way, if Steelers were like us and did not have the lightning threat subtract 7pts from thier total. They lose 22-16 dont they!

Lets look at where the real problem lie, not the peripherals. Lack of quick strike ability strikes again!

Put things in perspective people. This is a 9-7 team at best and has been since the beginning of training camp. Anyone who thought different was fooling themselves like most homers do. With that being said this team is one deep threat and a couple of defensive players away from being a superbowl contender. I hope next year isn't locked out because it's going to be fun to watch. Lets get to 9-7 or more this season and then fire Henning. Henne is good to go and will make a huge leap next year.

DOES THE REFEREE HAS TIES TI PIT TEAM IN ANY WAY ?IS ANY OF HIS SELLING HOT DOGS IN THE PIT STADIUM ?

mando stop hating on the refs, even though it was the wrong call. this team should have been up by 13 at that point in the game. Henning sucks. Write a post about that Mando or about how Sparano chokes and playsnot to lose. Tomlin was laughing his arss off in the first quarter being down only by 6.

Phins played great all day between the 20's but failed toe execute TDs when we needed them. ur not gonna beat PIT scoring FGs

that being said, the Phins D played great and had the RUN stuffed (yes, fockin STUFFED) and Rapistbergher was hurried and sacked.

the Refs definitely messed up and changed the outcome of the game, no doubt. basically snatching a win from us.

was REALLY disppointed with the 2-minute offense. 2nd and 8 and hene rushes the play with the 2minute warning approaching quickly. stop the game and come with a good play. his fault and he will learn from that.

PIT still sux left-hind teet.

DyingBreed, I disagree. We have the players. But you have to make play calls that call for a deep pass. Coaching staff is responsible there, not the players.

Denny, nothing anyone has said is more true than your post. I agree 100%.

NFL refs get worse every game.... their obvious calls for the "special" teams and players" are just way out of hand.... BUT that being said..... DOLPHINS OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR SHOULD BE FIRED ON THE SPOT!!!... HOW CAN YOU CALL A RUN ON A WINNING DRIVE WITH 2:30 LEFT AND NO TIME OUTS!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME???????? C'MON MAN!!!!! GET RID OF THIS GUY HE HAS NO TESTICULAR FORTITUDE!!!!! GET REAL!!!!!

GUYS I WATCHED THE SAME GAME AS YOU. THE CALL MAY HAVE GIVEN US THE GAME BUT IT SURE DIDNT LOSE IT FOR US.

WE HAD THE BALL BACK WITH 2 AND HALF MINUTES LEFT AND FAILED TO EXECUTE IN 4 DOWNS. THAT WAS THE FINAL DAGGER TO OUR HOPES.

AN OPEN LETTER TO SPARANO: Dear Tony, when are you going to notice Clemons is never near the ball? He is a waste of space as safety. Your special teams stink. No more Dallas castoff!, Get Better, the tacking by Sapp and Clemons will cost you your job if you dont make changes,

Bullcrap!! 2 Fins players jumped on pile and a Fin came out with ball!! With 22 players out there, how much clearer can u get??

NO NO NO DYING BREED , R YOU SAYING WE PLAY VS PIT AND THE REFEREE UNTIL WE HAVE A LIGHTING OFFENSE ?

P.S...REFEREE SHOULD BE HONEST EVEN IF WE DON'T HAVE OFFENSE AT ALL .

Now I know how that chick in Georgia felt after her Tryest with Ben (The Rapiest)Rothlisberger....

DyingBreed, once again...playcalling.

So the refs didn't do their job and find out who came up with the ball.
When a running back fumbles the ball I've never seen a ref need video evidence of who recovered a fumble before.
All those refs and not one could see a 290 pound linebacker come up with the ball?

DyingBreed, I disagree. We have the players. But you have to make play calls that call for a deep pass. Coaching staff is responsible there, not the players.

Sure you can call all the deep plays you like but it doesnt mean anyone will be open.

how about the video evidence of akila-francis holding the ball over his head after the play!? what a fu*#!^& joke!

good call btw by not going for the two point conversion when they had a chance to tie the game. you think shula would have done that?

WHATS THE DEAL WITH MARSHALL, WE GAVE UP A LOT TO GET HIM AND HE HAS YET TO CATCH A DEEP PASS FOR A TD. I SAY IF WE DONT MAKE THE PLAYOFFS TRADE HIM AND GET OUR DRAFT PICKS BACK WE HAVE A LOT OF REBUIDING TO DO .

Stupid idiot that called it a TD had NO view of the ball!! Why not let the play finish and then go back and correct it? oh, that's right, he grew up 30 miles from Pitt!!!!!!

THE NFL SHOULD LOOK AT BRIBES AND GAMBLING FOR THAT GAME .

dyingbreed, correct. That and an OC is whats need on offense and playmakers on D and team is a contender. right now, this team is where they belong in relation to their talent and lack of coaching. Sparano is a fool.

ok, after the rage, what the hell was the fullback doing on the hurry up offense? 4 and long, he could not get off the field, and lined up in the slot, lost!

its not henne's fault that the OC is incompetent...HC is incompetent too

The fumble into the end zone wouldn't have ended the game. With the time left. Pitt only needs 2 burn 2 timeout before the 2 min warning. Leaving them with 1. I never said they would go score, we will never know. And yes we might have even got a first down and ran out the clock. But to say that the referee's are THE REASON the Phins lost this game is a lame excuse. We lost because somebody calling the plays is trying his hardest to help Dan Carpenter set a scoring record for kickers. T

Daryl...Gimme a break...please.

There is a differnence between Well, maybe it was a fumble maybe it wasn't...there is a differnce between he got his feet in bounds, no he was out of bounds....hard to determine.

BUT....WE CAN'T DETERMINE WHO RECOVERED THE BALL AT THE END OF THE PLAY......THAT IS JUST EFFING UNACCEPTABLE, PISS-POOR REFFING....

I said it before and I will say it again....anyone who SEEs it otherwise is either Idiotic or a Moron.....there is no 3 ways about it.

Matthew Kucera,

Just one point: it was Clemens who made the hit on the pissburg QB that caused the fumble.

This was a well called game by Henning. Sometimes the plays just dont work as well as you like.

But hell yeah HENNING IS A BUM because he couldnt call a play that magically produced us a Mike Wallace type speedster.

NO ONE YET TO GIVE CREDIT FOR HENNE OR THE DEFENSE FOR WELL PLAYED GAME. WE NEED TO LOOK AT REFEREE AND HIS FAMILY GAMBLING AND BRIBES .

Then u didn't draw up a good enough play. I see your side too though. I've been a Fins fan since birth, and it will pain me to say this... but I was a bit upset when the Fins got rid of Ted Ginn Jr.... I know, I know, he made me cringe for 3 seasons also, but I really thought that with Marshall on board now, Ginn could either thrive in the slot or provide a deep option thanks to his straight ahead speed.

I just feel like today was lost due to poor coaching calls & the refs giving Pittsburgh the ball when it should have been Dolphins' ball on the 20.

..and there was a puff of smoke by the fence on the hill.. C'mon, throw the "fixed" cr#p out. Refs have to live somewhere and you should check to see how many refs actually call Florida their "hometown" before making claims of "disbelief" by the NFL. And too bad for us, when the line-judge indicated touchdown, players (from both sides) stopped as technically the play is considered over. Steelers ball at the 1 was the only call left.

SDOCANE,

Marshall is fast but he isnt a speedster. His yardage comes with yacs after short catches or in the intermediate areas of the field. We definitely need a sure handed speedster to compliment him.

Just to further emphasize my point (and because I'm still p!ssed)

NOW, Look at those #'s and put a positive spin of things...

While you're at it. Tell me the chances we make the playoffs, and if we do, which one of those teams are we able to beat?

AURESS,

Ginn had scary speed but his INCONSISTENT hands rivaled it. Ginn was not a longterm solution.
