Referee from Pittsburgh explains fumble ruling

Referee Gene Steratore spoke to the pool reporter about today's controversial call that was the difference in score between the Dolphins and Pittsburgh. The Steelers won, 23-22 on a field goal made possible when they kept the football following what looked like a fumble in the end zone that was recovered by Miami's Ikaika Alama-Francis.

The refs initially called the play a TD. Then they overturned the TD and said it was a fumble. But they didn't complete the job by giving the ball to Miami.

"Naturally, the ruling on the field was a touchdown by Pittsburgh," Steratore said. "After review it was confirmed in replay the ball did come loose and it was a fumble prior to the ball breaking the goal line. That's where we go into the second aspect of that. In order to overturn this and give another team the football, I have to have clear video evidence of that team recovering the fumble. So when a little short segment of what I said out there. That is what I explained. We did have a fumble, but we did not have video evidence and a confirmation on who recovered the football so we changed an aspect of the play by not awarding Pittsburgh the touchdown. Miami is not charged a time out because we changed an aspect of that play, but we could not award the defense in this situation the football because we don't have video evidence of the defense recovering the ball."

Steratore said officials could not determine who recovered the ball because, "it is a pile of bodies in there and you don't have a clear recovery."

Asked again by he could not determine who recovered the ball, he said, "We confirmed that there was a fumble and we not able to confirm a clear recovery by the defense."

Steratore, by the way, was born in Washington, PA., which is 30 miles outside of Pittsburgh. He still lives and has a business in the region.

Aloco,Your Babbling again and writing in Capital letters, Please stop doing both....

i thought this was one of Hennes best games thus far.

he did not lock on rec as much he looked off coverage, threw the ball away when nothing was there and stepped up to avoid pressur much better.

i thought henning made some good calls at times but selected bad plays more times than not. i really think henning is our weakest link by far.

Breed,

What do you want, man? Didn't Miami step up and pay the big bucks for Brandon Marshall? How would you run the team? Make Ted Ginn the captain, coach and owner?

Ok...so answer me this ref boy...Everytime there is a fumble in the nfl you never get to see the bottom of the pile to see whos clawing for the ball down there. You the refs are supposed to dive into the pile to see who got it!!! Refs do that in every game ive seen except this one. Why were there no refs diving into the pile to check on the fumble?? I say that because only one ref signaled a TD, all the other refs were looking for the ball, and one was about to get in the pile when he got pulled away by another ref!! I have never seen a worse call by a ref after this disgusting display I witnessed today. Makes me sick!

FIN 1,

WHEN DID THEY STOP PLAYING...BEFORE OR AFTER THE PILE UP?

GET OUT OF HERE WITH THAT CRAP....Just call it like it is...not like you wish it was

1 MIN later the REFS were still looking at the pile of so-called players from both sides whostopped playing

are you a Moron or an idiot?

ITS ALL ABOUT $$$ THATS WHAT THE NFL IS ABOUT.AND THE STEALERS GAVE THIER LOCAL REF A BIG CHECK

Although I hate to say it, I agree with Fin1..

Once they made the TD call, they whistled it dead and people started letting up.. so what happened after could be argued was due to the whistle call - which is likely why the video has to show Miami clearly getting the ball right away before the ball was whistled dead.

Hate the way it went down, but if I was a Pittsburgh fan, I know I would see it as a lucky, but good call.

It is just annoying that they don't reserve the call until the play is over... like, let them fight for the ball, then determine possession, then gather and then make the call that they think Ben got the TD without fumbling.. at least when they call it a fumble, they can then say that Miami (or Pitt) got possession of the ball and that it was either dead at the 1/2 yrd line, a touchback or a TD.

PFT HEAD LINE;

(( REFS CALLED A WONDERFUL GAME FPR THE STEELERS ))

ANOTHER HEAD LINE ...(( BIG BEN GOAL LINE FUMBLE NEGATED ,LETTING PIT BOOT FG TO WIN ))

ANOTHER LIN...(( A MANY REVIEWS OF THE TAPE SHOWS THAT BEN HAVE FUMBLED ,NO QUESTION ASKED ))

For what it's worth...

Aloco, Also quit posting under different names, It's very annoying....

ALSO ONE OF HENNE'S BIGGEST SHORTCOMINGS REAR ITS UGLY HEAD TODAY. WE MAY HAVE ONE OF THE LEAGUE'S GREAT REDZONE FADE ROUTE WEAPONS IN BRANDON MARSHALL.

SEEMS HENNE CANT NOT THROW THE ENDZONE FADE ROUTE ACCURATELY TO SAVE HIS LIFE. WITH MARSHALL IN FOLD HENNE HAS TO LEARN TO DO THIS!

Oh, and the FA I was screaming for (That got me laughed at)

DEANGELO HALL- 4INTS, ALONE, TODAY!

Yeah and you cant tell me a guy that lives there, and has a business there, that he is not a pitt fan! His butt should have been inside that pile looking for posession...top 3 worst calls in nfl history

One of the local TV crews should have the replay we're looking for, complete with audio of the other refs saying 'white ball.' Then, we'll get an apology from the league and move on. Pathetic. I don't understand how, even if the ref is as honest as hell, the league can let a guy from Pittsburgh, with a business in the area (imagine the fallout if he said Miami ball) ref a Steelers game.

marc, Henne's numbers stack up fine. its the non aggressive play calling that kills this team. I blame Sparano and Henning. Like I said Tomlin was laughing in the first quarter as if to say,"R U kidding me?" 6 point on 7 yards in fiest quarter. Thats all play calling.

1 for a TD.....

DONKEYS, IT'S NOT ABOUT HENNE.....

IT'S ABOUT A CROCK REFEREE.

I agree with killa and kris. We played them tough today, we compensated for having only one TD and five FGs (props to Carp), and a weak secondary, running game and play-calling. We got in their QBs face all day. We did enough to win and with an impartial ref we would have. Give pissburg credit for knowing the ins and outs (LOL) of pro football and referees.

Then who do you want out there DyingBreed?

3-4 TD's vs 1 TD?

Not gonna win too many games like that..I wasn't pointing out Henne specifically, just an overall picture of the competition

Kris- What do you think happens if we get the ball? Is there not a possibility that the steelers get the ball back because our conservative nature says run it 3 times. Is that an idiotic question, or even moronic to think? It is a possibility right? Right? I'm just pointing out that 2 times, wait 3 times inside of the redzone, and we settle for FG's. IMO that was where we blew the game. If we scoe a td in any of those trips, this whole thing is a mute point.

jrljr2,

Lack of aggressive playcalling? Hartline doesnt consistently get open, Bess doesnt have deep separating speed, and by the time Marshall truly does get deep Henne's getting pass rush heat.

Yeah right, lack of aggressive play calling most likely to produce sacks or Henne just having to thro the ball away.

Who ever said Miami's Defense played well, Did you watch the same game as me?? I think the Rapist was like 20 outta of 27 302 yards and 2 TDs, And it's only his second game of the year.... Yeah, That Defense played lights out...lmao...

Boys, our coach is a bowler (check out his game day shirts). Its obvious he's not into rolling strikes, he's just trying to pick up a spare (field goals). If he's at .500, its good enough for a fist pump. Bowlers typically don't have a killer instinct. They celebrate mediocrity.

i do have to say one thing on bright side. The O line is really stepping up and protecting Henne. Not bad in run game but A in pass blocking.

Hey Marc,

Go away

Flacco played the Bills
Ryan the Bungles
Collins the Eagles at home
Cassell the Jags (didn't they just lose 30-3

The Steelers are the best D in the league, Henne played fine, great numbers against the Steelers, enough to win for sure

Stop being a Henne hater

none of the other QBs played possibly the best team in the league either. dang good game by the fins today

"Both teams played hard my man. Both teams played hard."

Some of you here saying that we lost the game because of pitty-pat mistakes throughout the game don't understand the NFL. In the NFL, teams (on any given day) can beat or get beat. We made mistakes. THEY made mistakes. The difference was 2-fold:

FIRST, when it's 3rd and goal, 2:40 to play, your team is up 2, on defense, you need someone to step up and make a play. No matter what you want to say about him the rest of the day, on this play, that player was CHRIS CLEMONS! He stepped up, knocked the ball from the QB, caused a fumble, which MIAMI recovered. Everyone in the stadium saw it, everyone watching on tv saw it, everyone but the ref from Pennsylvania. I'm not saying that has anything to do with it, I'm just saying.

THEN, and ONLY AFTER YOU ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THE REF FLUBBED A PLAY AND GAVE THE LEAD TO THE STEELERS, only then can you say when you need to make a play to win the game, on this occasion this offense did not.

Now, you can blame Henne (I don't, thought he played a hell of a game), you can blame Henning (I always blame Henning, but he did enough to win like Gore did enough to beat Bush in 2000), you can blame the defensive secondary (I thought they weren't great but again, came through WHEN IT COUNTED!)

But the #1 reason this team won, was the ref didn't allow the play to continue, like every other fumble play and try to figure out who got the fumble (even though there's no way you could even see anything different since there were 3 Dolphin players on top of the ball, and one Steeler on top of them with his hand in the pile. So, WHICH STEELER COULD HAVE COME DOWN WITH THE BALL? Again, that's faulty logic, and just because that's the b*llsh*t they said, doesn't make it right or true. But, it is what it is.

Look, this team is capable of beating Pittsburgh, but not them AND the refs. So, we lost. The team is playing the way the record says to me. You can't keep saying "we never get the breaks" all the time. If you don't, it means you're not good enough yet. It's hard playing teams who play to win with a team who's coaching staff plays to hold a shaky lead. It's two different mentalities that seeps into the psychology and character of your team. But nothing will be done about that this year. Henning won't get canned until next year, and Sparano has at least 2-3 more years to prove his worth, as does Henne, so all you idiots saying any of them should be fired now don't know crap. Deal with the team you have. We're not horrible, if we were in the NFC we'd be winning a division. But when you're in the AFC East, there's not too much room for failure, and we can't have much more if this season will continue past game 16.

You can only begin getting very aggressive with your playcalling when you truly have the weapons to do it. I think we really need to go after VJAX this offseason.

LMAOROTF @ Elf, Thats funny stuff.....

Not only is the referee Steratore from Pittsburgh but so was the Headlinesman who made the original "phantom" TD call...Jerry Berger

I'm just trying to dash the hopes of whoever actually thinks we're a good team...

If they can't score td's in the redzone, you'll get these kind of results. To many oppertunities missed.

Whos the moron who called out Clemons? Hey dummy, he had the team lead with 9 tackles, forced 2 fumbles, and hit the QB so hard Rothliesberger said he thought his arm was broken after the play. Yeah he sucks, we should bench him and start Culver.

If the Fin's could score TD's in the red zone instead of kicking field goals, this attrocious call is moot. Henning sucks.

I also think the comment at the end of this article regarding the ref's place of birth and ties to Western PA are rather juvenile. I think the refs blew the call but implying that the head ref is a Steeler fan is well...stupid and is merely pandering to an angry blog audience.

For those complaining about the play calling I can understand Henning calling a running play there at the end since in the 3rd quarter (after the Jake Long hold) 1st and 20 (steelers playing pass) Ricky 5 yard run 2nd and 15 (still playing pass) Ricky 11 yard run 3rd and 4; so they should have had Ricky in the game there at the end since he was doing better than Brown.

The call i don't understand is at the beginning of the game we recover the fumble after the kickoff Ronnie Brown 1 or 2 yard run (ok I understand that you have to attempt to run to sell the play action) 2nd and 8 or 9, Henne has all the time and has to throw it out of bounds because only Brandon Marshall ran a route, and like the announcer says that makes no sense because if he is covered (and he was) then you have no one to throw to. Stupid play

DB,
How can you not see the points this team continuously leaves on field? Henning and Sparano call head scrating plays in red zone. I do agree, Hartline sucks. Marshall not a deep threat. ive said a million times. this ream needs speed and playmakers on both sides of ball. you are correct about that but if you think they call an aggressive Offensive game, i just dont see it.

Players played well. Did what they had to do to win the game. Can't blame them for the refs. Can't blame the players for the bad play calling on the final possession. We didn't give away the game like we did against the Patriots or even the Jets. We are improving, too bad the refs blew it.

I'm done. I'm out.

WHATS SO DISTURBING IS THE REF THAT WAS LOOKING AT THE PLAY AND WAS ONLY A FEW YARDS FROM THE PLAY SEES THE BALL COME OUT AND AFTER ABOUT 5 SECONDS LATER HE SIGNALS TD. LET THE PLAY RUN OUT. THERE WERE 2 MIAMI PLAYERS CLEARLY RECOVERD THE BALL AND THEN THE PITT PLAYER MADE CONTACT WITH THE MIAMI PLAYER , WE ALSO COME OUT OF THE PILE WITH THE BALL. AND ALL WE ARE GOING TO HERE FROM THE NFL MONDAY IS WERE SORRY

Do all the people acting as if their whole family just died in a hoorible plane crash realize that Pittsburgh is arguably the best team in the NFL and the Dolphins were 1 play away from winning the game? Anyone?

Okay okay OKAY!, I think we can all agree that Touchdowns are preferable to Field Goals. Unfortunately, this (Parcells) regime has that mindset. Sparano says himself that he'd rather play a close game. Me? I wanna win 35-3 every week. But its just not in this staff's DNA to be agressive enough. I want our foot on their darned throat and pressing down. Henning must go!

Cuban,

Ben was 19-27 for 302yds. Takeaway the 53yd Wallace td and it 18-26 for 242yds 1 td. About the same as Henne's performance.

Difference in the game? Ben had a speedster to take advantage of and Henne didnt. See what a difference having lightning strike ability in your offense makes.

If we dont get VJax this offseason, we had better come up with a deep threat speedster with sure hands from somewhere!

NY: 5-1 (PF 159, PA 101) 4-1 (AFC)
NE: 5-1 (PF 154, PA 116) 4-1 (AFC)*
PIT: 5-1 (PF 137, PA 82 ) 3-1 (AFC)
BAL: 5-2 (PF 149, PA 129) 5-2 (AFC)
TEN: 5-2 (PF 199, PA 117) 2-2 (AFC)
HOU: 4-2 (PF 153, PA 167) 3-0 (AFC)
IND: 4-2 (PF 163, PA 125) 2-2 (AFC)
KC: 4-2 (PF 150, PA 112) 3-2 (AFC)

MIA: 3-3 (PF 111, PA 135) 1-3 (AFC)

Someone explain to me where MIA fits in the playoffs?

HOW DID I KNOW YOU WERE GOING THERE!?

DYING, every year we say if we get this guy or that guy. we r a good team minus the referee.

That DEANGELO HALL sure looks better than J Allen, SEAN SMITH, and Benny Sapp...

Wasn't he a free agent?

4 INTS, 1 TD TODAY!

Marc,

When do the playoffs start? Come back in December and ask that chicken little shyte. In other words, have a little faith, bro.

the referee's mom from pitt .

DUDE, IN NUMEROUS POSTS i JUST SHOWED YOU WHY WE LEAVE SO MANY POINTS ON THE FIELD. WE HAVE NO LEGIT DEEP THREAT WITH SOLID HANDS.

BESS ISNT IT. HARTLINE ISNT IT AND MARSHALL ISNT IT. COMPOUND THAT WITH HENNE'S INABILITY TO THROW THE FADE TO MARSHALL AND THERE'S THE PICTURE.

A HENNE AND MARSHALL ENDZONE FADE COMBINATION WOULD BE NEARLY UNSTOPPABLE. HENNE CANT THROW IT!

Quit whining. Good teams find a way to win. And don't try to claim he favored the Steelers. They made the right call.

Miami fits in as a wild card.

They would not make it today, *BUT* (that was for you Marc), there is still 2/3rds of a season left to play..

We still play Cleveland, Detroit, Oakland, Buffalo, Chicago and Tennesee... I think we *can* beat them all... and I think we win 2 or 3 of them games against the Jets, Pats, Ravens and/or Cinci..

marc, to early to talk pkayoff, and dolphins got better today, we have a great chance at wild card, we have a tough first half of the schedule. we are 500 now, we should win every game of the 2nd half of our schedule

jaxdolphin, for alot of us this gets old man, doesnt mean we arent fans. and no way we make playoffs. u can give balt and pats the wildcards right now. not hard to predict. probaly finish around 8-8, im wondering if thats enough to get rid of staff?

Alright that's enough for me. Better luck next week, Henning. If you have a grandson, maybe you oughta let him draw up a few plays. Later.

"PLAY-Offs,Playoffs, We'll be lucky to win another game", Words spoken about 15 years ago by a head coach from Indy when asked if he belives his team can make the play-offs, Hate to say it but there arnt a lot of winnable games on the schedule....

Marc- this will indeed be a tough mountain to climb. It can be done. Look at the teams with the better records right now. What do they all have in common besides wins....points for. This is a huge problem. We have to find ways into the end zone.

DYING, every year we say if we get this guy or that guy. we r a good team minus the referee.

Posted by: ALoco | October 24, 2010 at 06:34 PM

ALOC, Its only a shame we cant pick them all up in one season. Our most pressing need on offense is a sure handed world class speedster opposite Brandon Marshall.

Hartline and Turner were drafted to be Marshall before we got Marshall. Not as speed demons. We had stonehands Ginn at the time and were hoping his 3rd year was a charm.

We still play Cleveland, Detroit, Oakland, Buffalo, Chicago and Tennesee... I think we *can* beat them all... and I think we win 2 or 3 of them games against the Jets, Pats, Ravens and/or Cinci..

Posted by: LipsinToronto | October 24, 2010 at 06:36 PM

Lips, When did they legalize marijuana in Canada???????

u would have to pass either pats or ravens to get wildcard, just stop with the playoff talk, this team is 0-3 at home and 1-3 vs afc teams
