Referee from Pittsburgh explains fumble ruling

Referee Gene Steratore spoke to the pool reporter about today's controversial call that was the difference in score between the Dolphins and Pittsburgh. The Steelers won, 23-22 on a field goal made possible when they kept the football following what looked like a fumble in the end zone that was recovered by Miami's Ikaika Alama-Francis.

The refs initially called the play a TD. Then they overturned the TD and said it was a fumble. But they didn't complete the job by giving the ball to Miami.

"Naturally, the ruling on the field was a touchdown by Pittsburgh," Steratore said. "After review it was confirmed in replay the ball did come loose and it was a fumble prior to the ball breaking the goal line. That's where we go into the second aspect of that. In order to overturn this and give another team the football, I have to have clear video evidence of that team recovering the fumble. So when a little short segment of what I said out there. That is what I explained. We did have a fumble, but we did not have video evidence and a confirmation on who recovered the football so we changed an aspect of the play by not awarding Pittsburgh the touchdown. Miami is not charged a time out because we changed an aspect of that play, but we could not award the defense in this situation the football because we don't have video evidence of the defense recovering the ball."

Steratore said officials could not determine who recovered the ball because, "it is a pile of bodies in there and you don't have a clear recovery."

Asked again by he could not determine who recovered the ball, he said, "We confirmed that there was a fumble and we not able to confirm a clear recovery by the defense."

Steratore, by the way, was born in Washington, PA., which is 30 miles outside of Pittsburgh. He still lives and has a business in the region.

Breed, When did "60 Minutes" cut him?????

You think we'll beat Tennessee?

Begals, Bears, Raiders, Browns, Lions, Bills best chances.

Raiders are ROLLING the Broncos right now though

Bears and Lions NFC

Ravens, Titans, NE, and NY will probably be losses

8-8 is my guess, sadly

GUYS.

MY PRIMARY POINT IS THAT YOU JUST CAN NOT MAKE A LIVING AS AN OFFENSE HAVING TO DRIVE THE LENGTH OF THE FIELD TO SCORE IN TODAYS NFL. eSPECIALLY IF THE OPPOSING OFFENSE HAS SPEED DEMONS AND YOU DONT.

DID NOT THE BEN TO MIKE WALLACE BOMB PROVE ANYTHING?

we got robbed we stuck with a team we were suppose to lose too and we were kicking their butt we knocked out alot of their defensive players sacked and harrassed rapistberger and caused him to fumble three times...our secondary sucks except for vontae and sometimes clemons and sometimes bell. special teams played good in the 1st half and then stayed in the locker room during the second although carpenter played great. the steelers should change it to stealers! i hate em! and once again a miami team is screwed by a ref at the end of a game...all i can say is either the fumble in the endzone in my mind is either a touchback which it was for miami or a TD for pitt how the hell do u put it on the 1/2 yard line anyways?

HAHA, good one cuban

You're right Darryl...POINTS FOR!

POINTS FOR, POINTS FOR...

Where will they come from?

Is that the fault of the talent, the OC, or both?

and NO Henne does not suck! he is a good young QB the o line played great but vernon carrey who is I believe the highest played player on the team has to go!

Re: remaining schedule.
Cleveland looked like a complete different team today, they will now have confidence.
McFadden went off for Oakland, 59 points with a quarter to play.

Isnt marshall supposed to be the guy?

looks like old gray-dick (Big Ben the rapist) did us in. don't blame the ref from Penn. time to bring back PENNINGTON!

Marc,

We cant get cheap 7pts on offense, defense, or special teams. Thta pretty all that separates good teams from great teams in today's nfl.

Well, we could hope that

Rapist goes to prison (even though they were 3-1 without him)

We can hope that Manning, Cassel, LT, Brady, Flacco, Chris Johnson, and a few others come down with some of these mysterious illnesses that our team seems to get

o god pennington why???? big ben did do us in and yes i do blame the goddamn ref

Regardless of everything posted, two refs pointed that Miami recovered the ball. We can all guess about play calling, can guess if we would have punted, etc...should have scored more TD's, etc...but thats why the game is what it is.

Fact is two refs signaled the ball was Miami's, how did they call they couldn't determine who had the ball when two refs said Miami had it, and the world saw us run off the field with it.

Couple of guys on here have said it was the right call, you must not have been watching then

MAGIC JHONSON WAS IN THE STANDS TODAy to watch fins vs the steelers .JHONSON HAS SAID HE'S INTERESTED IN OWNING A STAKE IN THE DOLPHIN TEAM .MAGIC WAS INVITED BY ROSS .

Henne looked pretty good today he is progressing

First of all, can someone please explain to me why did the Dolphins just play the Vikings, Jets, Patriots, Packers and Steelers when the team was 7-9 last year. I give this team a lot credit for being competitive in all those games and ultimately winning three games, but the offensive play calling, tackling and special teams play has been absolutely atrocious.

I'm still steaming about the last drive of the game. Lets forget about the blown call on the goal line that is not reason they lost this game. Why in the world would they run a running into teeth of the defense for a two yard gain if they're so concerned about running another play before the two minute warning? Completely irrational play calling. The kick coverage team has the propensity to allow a big momentum turning play every time the offense does something good. Today those two long kick off returns could not have come in more inopportune time. Benny Sapp and Chris Clemons should not be playing in the NFL. I have yet to see Clemons make a play on the ball or make a game changing hit all year. That's pretty hard to do when you're the free safety. Benny Sapp should be cut along with Tim Dobbins and every other bum that missed a tackle on defense and those kick off returns. Inexcusable!!!

I usually don't watch other games...Historically I have not. This year I've watched several

It's night and day to watch teams moving the ball downfield, throwing TD's

It's almost like watching a completely different sport

Magic Johnson was quoted as saying "I'd rather have HIV than have to watch this team every week"

bad play calls there at the end mad phins fan but i say we would have won if not for the bad call at the end our d was playing pretty solid

Umm, dude, Clemmons forced TWO fumbles today, including the goaline fumble...

MARSHALL ONLY EVER HAS BEEN AND STILL IS ONLY A INTERMEDIATE RANGE WR WITH ABILITY TO BREAK A TACKLE AND OCCASSIONALLY TAKE IT ALL THE WAY TO THE HOUSE.

A SPEED WR WITH SOLID HANDS WOULD BE THE PERFECT COMPLIMENT TO MARSHALL.

WE COULD EVEN SCORE MORE TD'S IN THE REDZONE IF HENNE EVER PERFECTS THE ENDZONE FADE ROUTE TO MARSHALL.

i agree if anything that freakin jason allen has to go and so does sean smith and bell gave allen no help either on that wallace td

The NFL needs to address its fans! As many have stated the referees are not to assume its a TD and should have determined who had the ball.

I want to know what we can do so the league hears us and addresses it.

AMEN VermontFin

we just have to look for bribes and gambling .

WE HAVE NOW LOST 2 GAMES BECAUSE HENNE CANT THROW THE ENDZONE FADE TO MARSHALL.

REMEMBER THE CONTROVERSY OF NOT TRYING TO THROW THE ENDZONE FADE ROUTE IN THE GAMES AGAINST THE JETS? THAT'S THE ONE WHERE THEY CLAIM MARSHALL WAS TIRED.

ON JUST ONE OF TODAYS POSSESSIONS HAD WE SCORED 7PTS INSTEAD OF 3PTS THAT MARGIN WINS THE GAME FOR US. NOT ONCE DID YOU SEE AN ENDZONE FADE ROUTEATTEMPT TO MARSHALL.

DOES THIS TELL YOU SOMETHING? TELLS ME HENNE CANT THROW THE ENDZONE FADE.

JimmyFins, Bell wasn't on that side on that Wallace TD play. The play was Allen was on Wallace. He had the right call, he took the right position, he did everything right. BUT, if you Chris Clemons was back on that side, in zone coverage. He chose to go help Vontae on Hines Ward then Allen. Clemons didn't notice the call, and crept to the wrong side and left Allen alone with the fastest player on the Pitt team. That's what happened on that play.

Magic Johnson should give this corrupt referee and his whole Pittsburg family HIV/AIDS. He deserves nothing less

WOW!!!!! Speechless.

ok you are right DC Dolfan in hindsight stupid move by coaching staff then to put i trip over my own feet allen 1st round draft bust

D12,

AFTER THAT TASTLESS AND STUPID COMMENT IM OUTTA HERE!

i remember last year the NBA referee who was gambling and losing to the house and refereed the games in a way that made him money to pay the house .

NFL , LOOK AT THE REFEREE NOT THE HELMET TO HELMET HITS .

but where was bell???

Man, this Welker guy is good. What does it take to get a guy like that. Reminds me a little of that Camarillo guy

How about that DEANGELO (I had more INT's today than the Dolphins have all season) HALL

wasn't he a FREE AGENT? Doesn't he return kicks?

Good thing our GM and former exec VP of Blah, blah know what they're doing

DyingBreed, AND? You're right, that's not a throw Henne has mastered. What's your point? He sucks? Three straight games with 250+ passing? He cost the game? Everyone saw that play and Miami recover it?

Or is the truth a little more gray than the black or white you want it to be? Henne's learning how to play in the NFL. He's not the best QB, he's far from the worst either. I guess your view is dump Henne and then draft ANOTHER QB to develop and give 3-5 years to marinate and become a good NFL QB. I'd rather just go with this guy that's halfway through his development, and has at the very least played .500 football.

Sadly, I believe in our ability to win even without solid justification.

It doesn't take drugs to make me overly optimistic about our chances. If I thought it was over and we had no chance, then why bother watching any more?

We always want our team to fight to the end but have the bloggers here give up on the team after one blown assignment, one bad play or one bad call.

UPON LEAVING I LEAVE YOU GUYS THIS:

LAST SEASON: PITT 202 YDS RUSHING

TODAY: 58 YDS RUSHING

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A CAVEMAN MAKES(CROWDER)!!!

Some positives- Looks like NE.might blow this game. Hoodie went for it on 4th down. Gotta hand it to him, he plays to win. trusts his team.

Look, Marino told Henne to "Let it fly", however, he's got "checkdown" Chad Pennington as his MENTOR!

What do you expect?!

Dolphins should put this game under protest. That was absolutely fixed. No question. That was before I found out the ref is from Pittsburgh...

Magic Johnson was quoted as saying "I'd rather have HIV than have to watch this team every week"

I just Spit beer all over my screen.... sorry but this is truly funny....

i agree DC Dolphin

HIS MOM WAS born and raised in PIttsburg .

DC DOLPHIN

NEVER HAVE I SAID DUMP HENNE. WAS ONLY POINTING OUT THATS ONE OF THE REASON WE DONT MAXIMIZE SCORING POSSIONS.

IF YOU HAVE PAID ANY ATTENTION TO MY POSTS AT ALL. YOU WOULD KNOW MY PET PEIVE RIGHT NOW IS WE DONT HAVE A SPEEDSTER WITH HANDS TO COMPLIMENT MARSHALL AND HARTLINE DOESNT HAVE THE SPEED REQUIRED.

Pats win

if we had ted gin we would be in a better place .

tom brady is the best QB walked on our plant .

IF WE COULD HAVE STRIPPED AWAY TED GINNS SPEED AND GIVEN IT TO HARTLINE WE WOULD HAVE THE PERFECT COMPLIMENT TO MARSHALL.

Aloco, did'nt you read my last 2 posts to you????????

this is a 500 team, finish 8-8

Good teams find a win these types of games. As much as it pains me to say it, the Jets and Pats are the class of the division and have the best coaches in the division HANDS DOWN.

Let's see that dumb fatass Sparano cheer those field goals now that the Dolphins have lost by one point.

"referee from Pittsburgh"?

Totally f-in gutless on your part, Armando. Why don't you just come out and accuse him of cheating? Why don't you tell us about why his explanation is wrong? But I guess you can't, so instead you smear the guy through innuendo.

Dying Breed , i mean justin incredible. You forgot to turn off your caps. Say hi to payaso del carajo while your at it. jackazz.

So, last year we needed a #1. This year a #2. You can keep hoping for different personnel, but other teams find ways to win with the personnel they have (which I'm not convinced is much better than what's on this team). This offense would be much more confident and explosive if you had an explosive-minded OC, so I don't blame the players for taking on their OC's personality.

Still, that's not why they lost this game.

By the way, the last 2 posts from DC Dolfan, wasn't this DC Dolfan, I guess someone's impersonating me.

Seriously. Since it seems like this will be another middle-of-the-road season

No playoffs

Possibly not even a winning record

What's the fallout?

Does the beast throw a hissy fit?

Do we fire the coach, the OC, or both?

OR, do we just maintain the same blind hope that, next year's another year, we'll get better, blah, blah, blah

PLAYERS with contracts up:
BROWN, WILLIAMS, HENNE, FASANO, CARPENTER, or FIELDS (Can't rememeber)

Those are just a few I can think of

andyM, we got to look at this referee gambling and bribes like we did w/the NBA referee last year .HE'S NOT JESUS AFTER ALL .

HENNE , FASANO,CARPENTER WII BE BACK .
