Referee from Pittsburgh explains fumble ruling

Referee Gene Steratore spoke to the pool reporter about today's controversial call that was the difference in score between the Dolphins and Pittsburgh. The Steelers won, 23-22 on a field goal made possible when they kept the football following what looked like a fumble in the end zone that was recovered by Miami's Ikaika Alama-Francis.

The refs initially called the play a TD. Then they overturned the TD and said it was a fumble. But they didn't complete the job by giving the ball to Miami.

"Naturally, the ruling on the field was a touchdown by Pittsburgh," Steratore said. "After review it was confirmed in replay the ball did come loose and it was a fumble prior to the ball breaking the goal line. That's where we go into the second aspect of that. In order to overturn this and give another team the football, I have to have clear video evidence of that team recovering the fumble. So when a little short segment of what I said out there. That is what I explained. We did have a fumble, but we did not have video evidence and a confirmation on who recovered the football so we changed an aspect of the play by not awarding Pittsburgh the touchdown. Miami is not charged a time out because we changed an aspect of that play, but we could not award the defense in this situation the football because we don't have video evidence of the defense recovering the ball."

Steratore said officials could not determine who recovered the ball because, "it is a pile of bodies in there and you don't have a clear recovery."

Asked again by he could not determine who recovered the ball, he said, "We confirmed that there was a fumble and we not able to confirm a clear recovery by the defense."

Steratore, by the way, was born in Washington, PA., which is 30 miles outside of Pittsburgh. He still lives and has a business in the region.

ok,guys the game was fixed. but, what can you expect from the NFL? since they caught the NE patriots cheating and they hardly did anything about it?also, isnt a conflict of interest to have a guy from one of the team's state to ref a game??everything is about the big bucks and the fans be dammned!

also, remember that all of them players, coaches and refs gets paid after an event.so,its useless to get fustrated, mad or depressed because they ultimately dont care since they already got their pay....do you understand what i'm saying?so my advice to all of you is to relax and take this game like a wwe type of game LOL!

Let's talk about some positives....how about the hit that Clemons put on Big Ben that should have saved the game for us. Outstanding! And how about Carpenter. Two weeks in a row!! This cut is red hot right now! Could well be on his way to a Pro Bowl. Awesome!

LOL, what a bunch of whiney babies. Maybe next year losers.

the rapist said he had the ball but PFT is making fun of him for saying that . it says it's not true and it's says the only problem is that conflicts w/the reality of the video.

they call him in fact A LIER .

bobbyd12, I don't want to argue with you, but you disagree with EVERY point I made? You approve of Henning's body of work? You think this organization is where it should be 3 years after the black plague year of 2007? I don't want to hit the panic button here, but this are not going well this year. At least if you have a player that isn't performing they can be replaced. Henning is here for the year. That is not good.

So if the season is 'all but a failure' and 'over' this is probably the last we'll be hearing from you this year Marc? Good! This is a blog for fans of the Dolphins team and you don't sound like one. I'm as disappointed with the result today as you are but it's not because the effort wasn't there. We should have won this game, just as we won last weeks game. And guys rip the organization all you want but we're not the Colts and we're not going to blow people out. With the personnel we have, we're going to need to play safe, turnover free football and take what the opposition gives us. Those of you who don't like it should become a fan of one of the 'exciting' teams in the league....like Dallas. However, they are 1-4! Good luck!

they couldn't fathom ..chris clemons a average player ..knocking the ball out of nfl goldenboy ben ben .losing the game that way.the nfl is a joke now why cause it's run by people around the newyork area..they want the great teams or the teams they popularise to pull away of the average teams.see the chargers got robbed today...and the bills also..the nfl is becomming a wwf nba type of drama...the jets will be in the superbowl cause thats what the nfl wants..the same players ben r. hines ward peyton manning tom brady ..i'am done with this crap.the fins will win when those guys retire cause those guys are very greedy!

i gotta say at the end of the day, the dolphins beat the steelers....the ref blew the game winning play...we certainly were not outplayed in this game, aside from the ST KR allowed at the end BUT WE STOPPED THEM ON 3rd and GOAL, caused the turover to win the game!!!!!...at worst we would have punted just after the two minute warning if we had possession at our 20...our DL and LB's were in his face all night would have liked the cahance to see that...so u can all harass Henne, but the fact remains he looked very effective today and was typically efficient...no INTS and the STEELRS could be the class of AFC.....so......we beat em 22 to 20 and did not play afraid at all....thats how i am left after this game, beat GB on the road and basically outplayed PITT at home so I think we are growing....schedule is tough, but we are getting better RAPIST is an 8 year vet or so, we shut their running game down and let up some pass plays to a tough veteran strong qb and hines ward...I am proud and am realistic to understand that we are a much better team than two years ago wehen we went a very charmed 11-5 against the weakest schedule...I much prefer where we are now...I think games like today will pay off in the second half of the season...we will be mentally tough and the two big games remain at NE and at the NYETs...if we stay within two losses of those guys...it wont be over one of them still will have a loss against each other and we need to beat the loser of that game to sneak in possibly....lot of football left.....

Craig, now im not a bandwagon fan like you accused some of...so with that said...no i am not enjoying my team

It's easy...1 the Steelers get the football it'a touchdown or 2 the Dolphins get the football on the 20 yard line because of the touchback. Those are the only two logical outcomes. Just another example of how the referees determine the outcome of the game. This is unfreakensatisfactory!

Pissed the hell off!

Craig, 31 career INT's, 5 this yr, 4 last, 2 prior

Just saying, we could (have) used him

Graig, Lets talk about the negatives, Only scored 111 pts in 6 games, Offensive cord. Passed away in 1964, The best wide out money can buy is a non issue in 4 of those games, The top scorer is your FG kicker,You cant close out a game cause your OC passed away almot 50 years ago(Oh sorry, already posted that) Your head coach couldn't manage a clock if his life depended on it, Your Owner is a complete tool, ETC,ETC,ETC, I could go on but it's just to depressing....

Is Sean Smith really playing so poor in practice that he is not seen as better than Jason Allen? It's hard to believe!

Cowkilla,

You're not enjoying seeing this team go out and compete with some of the best teams in the NFL every week? Are you telling me you didn't enjoy last week when we went into GB and beat them in OT, in a very tough stadium to get a win (don't tell me they were beat up. WE still beat them). What about the game in Minnesota? Same thing. There's no quit in this team and it really should have been another victory today. We should be sitting at 4-2, having won two games in a row and I think that changes everyone's thinking of this team.

Sorry Craig, I'll suffer through all year, just like every year...

At least now I understand the mentality of battered women...

The Dolphin's keep beating me up, and I keep loving them

Marc, go to hell .the dolphins don't need sissy like you .

I am tired of waiting for draft choices to mature and hope they pan out. I still want to kick Nick Sabean in the nuts for signing Culpepper instead of Brees.

Mr. Ross,
Please bring us Cower or Gruden with an offensive coordinator for Cristmas Please. I want to watch my beloved team of 30 years actually make the playoffs again before I die. Henning go back to high school please.

Marc,

I didn't think it was possible but you have just replaced Bill Connors as the most negative guy on this blog. Guys, we played perhaps the best team in the NFL to a single point loss today and were duped of a victory by a brutal call by the official. Our guys really laid it on the line today and all you guy want to do is complain about Sparano, Henning, Henne, our S/T our secondary....who am I missing? This team is competitive every game (and I include the Pats game in there when we self-destructed in the second half). That's fine, you guys jut keep jumping off the bandwagon while the rest of us enjoy our team.

Posted by: Craig M | October 24, 2010 at 08:07 PM

Craig M, you forgot god !

you idiots on tis blog crack me up, it looks like nothing this teams does please u , CLEARLY WE GOT JOBBED OU OF A LOST BY THE REFS forget the play calling because, i think henne clearly shows that he has what it takes , we lost by one point. whats funny is that everyone knows it we have ten games to play and are at 500 the season isnt lost we learn frm this i bet we will see the steeler again on the way tot he superbowl, home wins will come, alot of hldin calls werent call but hey u live to play another day.

so idiots shut the hll up get behind your team if ur real fans

hey guys

yes the pitt official and his crew cost us the lead in the fourth quarter. How does the NFL not hire full time officials after blunders like this, as well as complete the course of a play to determine posession incase of a challenge. If you watch the replay you can clearly see 2 dolphin players jump on the ball. At that point evidence shows they have it and the play is dead.

Now if that occurs, and the fins get the ball on the 20, can they run out the clock by getting a first down. We will never know. I think the bigger problem with this dolphins team is their inability to cash in on their chances. Two gifts in the first quater and only 6 points. I dont care how good a defense is, and pitt could be the best in the NFL, you have to move the ball 20 yeards to the endzone. They need to remove the training wheels from henne in the redzone and let him make plays.

Henning's play calling leaves everyone scratching their heads. At 3-3 we have gone through toughest part of our schedule and there is still lots of football to be played. Everyone outside of pittsburgh knows who recovered that fumble. this is a solid young team thats only getting better. Go fins

Hey, want some other depressing news?

NEW ENGLAND HAS 8 PICKS in the first 4 RDs next season.

Also dpressing is that NYJ took the leagues castaways for next to nothing

Edwards, Cromartie, JT, LT, Holmes all cast offs

Oh, yeah, their both in our CONFERENCE...

At least INDY isn't anymore

Apologies "they're"...Contraction, jeez

Only scored 111 pts in 6 games,

Posted by: Cuban Menace | October 24, 2010 at 08:30 PM

Yep Cuban, and until this team changes the 60's way of doing things....we'll remain a mediocre team. Good but not good enough.

But hell, you knew that, didn't you?

francis fell on it, francis got up with it, but that was the most creative excuse ever heard
to give the steelers a win

this team is good enough for me losers .
jump off the band wagon .

You know what's ironic?

The Chargers lead the league in Total Offense (YPG), Total Defense (YPG), Passing (YPG) and Passing D (YPG)

It's a VERY strange league this year. How the heck does Cleveland go into NO and demolish the Saints today? Or the Bills take Baltimore to OT on the road? It's the strangest of seasons!

Guys, I'm not happy this team is 3-3. I don't know if we've got the right people in charge making the decisions. But i do know we've played some pretty good teams this year and our schedule does get easier. I would prefer some tweaks in the off-season as opposed to blowing this thing up. Unless the whole thing falls apart from now until the end of the season I would bring Sparano back for one more year. I'd like to see what he can do with another OC, what the team looks like after another draft and another off-season. I think we have some pretty good building blocks in place and I think it's only going to get better.

(( CROWDER TOLD ME THAT REFEREE TOLD HIM THAT IT WAS CLEAR THE DOLPHINS RECOVERED THE BALL BUT CAN'T PROVE ON TAPE )).

WOW.OUR TEAM WON THAT GAME LOSERS .

The field was covered in a mystifying chemtrail mist, man.

Dude, you know i luvs the Steelers and gotz a biz in Pitt.
TD Pitt!
No cant get that, ok.
Fumble recovery Pitt.
Party On, Man.

Good points Craig

We should have decent draft picks...

Hopefully they'll pass on the Pat Turner's, Pat Whites, Shawn Murphys, SEAN SMITH's, Phillip Merlings

and draft a few more Jake Long's and Devone Bess'

Chad Henne "We definately gotta find a way to get in the endzone and get touchdowns"

"We are what our record says we are...We're 3 and 3"

Listen, i gotz $50,000. in a brown paper bag and never will pay for drinks in this town again.
Screw the fish.
Reporters in Miami gotz no balls.
Keep your mouth shut and move on.

Hang in there Marc. It's a love/hate realtionship but we've been through worse before. I'm hopeful the team comes out with more fight against a pretty mediocre Cincy team next week.

we control everything.
give me all your time and money, ignorant oblivious sheeple!

100% of all bets go to us.
NWO wins in a tie.
Pay me sucker.

Graig M , great post .

Amen

These Dolphins are one good corner, one good safety and one good tight end from being a great team!

They went toe to toe with one of the best, if not the best team in the afc!

They will be in the playoff hunt this year!

I would not be surprised if they make it to next years super bowl!

That's my prediction...

Fair.
Bahahahahahaha.
The world is not fair.
Never will be.
Thanks for your time,suckers.

i am very proud of the dolphins today .

So what are you going to do?
Yell,scream,stamp your feet?
You will do nothing.
We rule.
You lose.
The game is rigged.
You are a chump.
Pay me,sucker.
bahahahahaha.

new world,, you posts are real no joke .

this blown call gave me flashbacks of last year when the saints 'scored' on that td after ted ginn obviously knocked it out a yard and a half short of the endzone

Your wife is my sex slave.
Your children slave for us.
You are insignificant.
Get used to it.
Conform or die.

Blown call?
U have no voice.
Speak again and die.
We rule everything.
You are very ignorant.
Now you must pay.
Give me your children.

Because the on-field ruling was a touchdown, the officials didn't bother to unpile the players and figure out if indeed Ikaika Alama-Francis had possession, as the Dolphins insisted he did.

Steratore defended his crew's omission of that task, saying it wasn't required because of the touchdown ruling.

This is like saying: once the police determined the red car in question did not plow into the crowd, they were not responsible for getting the tag number of the car that crushed a toddler. Lame steratore. nice try.

Still crying?
You have seen nothing yet.
Wait until mid November.
We control more than you could ever imagine.
We can shake the earth.
We can shut down air travel completely.
We will decide what air quality you breathe.
We will decide if your oceans are clean and which oceans.
We will decide if you work.
We will decide if you eat,
You are an insignificant slave.

ZEBRA PUNANI

Lots of suck to go around.

Sparano
Henning
Ronnie B
Jason A
Special teams
Rizi
Officials

We will control your mind.
We will decide which way the wind blows.
Fumble.
What fumble.
We will take the ball from you.
We will give the ball to your enemy.
You will do nothing
You have no control.
We have all the control.

Wait till Henne starts throwing the deep ball! or better yet audible's out of a play at the line of scrimmage

is something hidden with the Ref?
Another question......Where is our vertical Game, specially in the red zone in the first quarter?only 2 field goals
Ronny Bown still think he going to run 1000 yds. in the NFL?, maybe in the CFL.

What about the money you bet?
What money?
All the money bet is ours, plus 10%.
You have no equity in your house.
We own your house.
You own nothing.
Your 401k will soon be worthless.
You are insignificant.
You are breathing our air.
You are eating our food.
You are drinking our water.
You must be eliminated.
There are to many of you slaves.
At least 6 million of you must be eliminated.
You and your family mean nothing to us.
Only you think,you matter.
You are fooling yourself.
You have failed.
Time for you to go.

I don't get the negativity surrounding this team. Yeah, Henning sucks and I will bet anyone on here that he'll be gone the second the season is over. They'll say he stepped down but we'll all know better. Outside of that, this team is not a finished product and is a hell of a lot closer to being one then 3 years ago. I thought the team would go 10-6 maybe 9-7 and that's what their on track for. If you thought they would be better than that, you are simply unrealistic. The 08' season got everyone's expectations out of whack. The season isn't even at the half way point yet, pop a zanex, relax.

BTW everyone.

I dont live in Miami, but was that really a home game. I think atleast 20000 steeler fans must have been in the stadium and even at the end i could hear chants of defense when henne and co had the ball. Cmon Dolfans, hows this team suppose to gain home dominance if local fans keep selling off their tickets to the opposition's fans. Have some pride and cheer the boys on at home.

We only need 2 billion of you worthless slaves,
No more middle class.
Only rulers and slaves.
Your children are not special.
We own your children.
Most of your children are worthless.
They must be eliminated.
They are not special.
They are our slaves or eliminated if nonconformist worthless brats.

Jon,

Good post at 9:35pm. You're right on the money man.

You think Social Security is not a pyramid scheme.
You think Busch won the election over Gore
You think killing women and children in Irag was a good idea.

Gene Steratore apparently runs a sanitation supply company; how appropriate considering the sewage of calls he spewed on the field today. Maybe we should contact him to clean up the mess he made today:
