Running game isn't even average on per carry rate

Dolphins offensive coordinator Dan Henning admits the Dolphins rushing attack does not exactly resemble the barbarian hordes running roughshod through the defenses of the Roman Empire back in ancient times. (The Romans, you see, had injuries to their linebacker corps and didn't protect the bridges or northern frontier very well.)

"We're not happy with the way the running game is going right now," Henning said today during his 10-minute weekly window for speaking with the media.

That is actually more of an admission than coach Tony Sparano was willing to offer Wednesday. The Dolphins are averaging only 3.8 yards per carry this year and Sparano was asked if that is efficient or good enough.

“It’s not satisfactory but an efficient play, okay in this league is what?" Sparano said, uncharacteristically challenging the reporter (not me). "You tell me; give me the number. You guys make them up.”

Ouch.

Actually, the media doesn't make up that number. The league average gain per rushing play is 4.2 yards per carry. So the reporter told coach Sparano a good rushing play, an efficient play gains 4.6 yards.

“No, that’s not an efficient play, 4.6," Sparano insisted. "That was our average, 4.6. That’s not an efficient play. You tell me."

The reporter lowered the bar and said 4.0 yards per carry, even though average -- just average -- is 4.2 yards per carry leaguewide.

“Four yards, we’re at 3.8," Sparano said with a shrug that seemed meant to bridge the gap between 4.0 and 3.8.

Neither one is good enough. Neither one is even good enough to be average.

A lockout next season? I say we beat them to the punch and lockout Dan Henning right now.

After 6 games of watching Vernon Carey I say we lock him out as well.

If and when John Jerry "recovers" from his mystery illness I think we should slide McQuistan out to right tackle.

This could help the run game and pass protection all in one little CHURN!!!!

Indy is going to hurt with Dallas Clark out. Big loss. Dallas? There toast, and watching it happen to Jerry Jones is great. Wonder how long before Dez gets discouraged and ends up in jail. Tick Tick

Bobby, discouraged??? He got paid millions after living a life of poverty. He's on top of the world. Dallas sucking the big salcishe is a minor inconvenience to him at best.

I dont see what you guys see in Lex Hilliard. I have seen nothing to indicate Hilliard will ever be anything more than a backup rb no matter where he goes.

Only reason Hilliard's even on the team is because he's also a quality st's player. Remember last season Hilliard was on the bubble of being cut?

If not for his st's playing prowess Hilliard was out of here last season for sure. Hilliard's bottom rung of the rb depth chart. Patrick Cobbs coming off of "reconstructive" knee surgery is still rated ahead of him.

This doesnt speak very well of Hilliard's prowess as a rb alone well at all. St's places him in the over the hump position to gain a roster spot. Take that away and Hilliard's history.

Dying Breed by that rationale we will be rebuilding for 15 years.

Mark, your right, I was only wishful thinking as always. I just get sick and tired of all the draft picks that whata, shoulda, or coulda had....... Ok, I'm done with my belly aching, lets go kick some bungals butt.

it seem like our thoughts ate reaching the coaches through the media.
If sperano doesnt see nothing wrong with the way were playing then He must Go also along with Henning the coward.

I don't care if he's discouraged or on top of the world.

Smart money says he self destructs either way.

this is the one Game sofar im not worried about. this one should be ours without Biting our Nails...

Odinseye,

You have to be kidding about McQuistan!! He is one of the worst OL I have ever seen. He's ill-disciplined and he's slow. He brings nothing to the table. Not sure why you're coming down on Carey. I've seen nothing that makes me question him.

I agree Ace, Miami should have no excuse for not winning. We are just plain better!

Still think Carey would be an all world guard.

Finatic,

I don't agree. This game scares the crap out of me! I think we're the better team but I wonder what last week's loss does to us. I have to think the team is discouraged and the playoffs are starting to seem like a pipedream. I also scared of what Owens and Ocho Cinco might do to Allen or Smith and I am scared that Henne is going to start forcing things instead of letting the game come to him.

DB,

I beg to differ.

Hilliard has passed up Cobbs in my opinion(by the way, where did you get the info that the trifecta rated Cobbs higher than Hilliard this year?).

Hilliard runs like a poor mans Ricky Williams. Lex delivers the hits and would wear down opposing defenses if and when given the chance.

He's also the best pass catching RB on our roster.

Special teams demon for sure and is smart and strong enough to play fullback.

Cobbs can't do half the stuff that Hilliard does. I'm not saying he'll ever be the feature back, but he's definitely the next most valuable asset we have at running back behind Ricky and Ronnie.

Sparano is getting pissed. LoL...Good. Maybe that will translate to growth in the scrotum.

Eric,

This draft is not a bad but disappointing in the fact that Odrick and Edds both are IR. Also, we're now 7 games into the season 3rd rounder John Jerry has yet to play. He was suppose to be the new physical mauler on the oline to compliment the run game.

Nolan Carroll was expected be a 4th rd steal, the bad news is he isnt and the good news is he does play like a 4th rounder. Reshad Jones is playing like a 4th-5th rounder. Really no more or no less.

Koa Misi is playing at right at 2nd rd level. Selecting him 1st rd would have been over drafting. Overall, thus far no one from the current draft are having a shock and awe impact.

The additions of Marshall and Dansby places this offseason over the top. Otherwise I would grade it as a C- at best.

ENUFF SAID!

three yards and a cloud of dust is the running game.

The dolphins better act desparate to win this weekend or they'll lose big. If we lose I put the loss squarly on sparano's shoulders because that means the team wasn't ready because we are better than cinci

CraigM,

Kidding isn't quite the right word. Try sarcasm.

Seriously though, if you've seen nothing that makes you question him, you haven't been watching close enough.

He has been repeatedly torched in pass protection and hasn't been much better at run blocking.

Just a few of his worst low-lights happened in the past two games. He has single handedly stopped three drives. All on third and long. He stood up and looked right at the guy on his left. Let the guy blow right through and had NOBODY to block.

The commentators we actually laughing at him during the replays saying Carey just waved at the defender as he went by.

1st

Guys you cant dictate to a defense when you're playing behind or ever so slightly ahead. Expecially when you have limited explosion(Marshall) and they know you wont even attempt to throw it to him deep if a safety is over the top.

Then that's compounded by not having an explosive rb or #2wr.

If youre not going to even attemp to throw to Marshall deep when a safty's over the top and Hartline's no real worry. Of course the defense's primary mission then is to suffocate your run game.

We even make the run game slightly less effective with McQuistan instead of Jerry even if the coaches believe McQuistan is the better pass blocker.

odin, agree 100% on carey. that man is terrible! he's too big,too slow, shows no intensity. he misses blocks with regularity. too big a contract;shoulda kept andrew gardner and saved our money. we cleaned house after camp;probably have to do it all over again next year.

Well, My opinion here is not completly looking at Ronnie and ricky. the wholes have been much smaller or non-existant. Our linemen double team one guy and let others free. the O-line needs to improve. That being said I will say, Ricky when he sees the whole and gets through it, he always finds the one person on the ground and trips over them... Don't be afraid to Jump!! Same with Ronnie. they are the only running backs that get tackled by people already on the ground...

ENUFF SAID!

Posted by: DyingBreed | October 28, 2010 at 04:37 PM

Calm down Bro. Just trying to find out where you got the info. You know some people(not ME of course-lol) just spout off their own opinions as facts.

By the way, do you agree or disagree with MY assessment of Hilliard?

PS: Thanks for the link.

Odinseye,

No one's ever accused Carey of being pro bowl material. However he is very solid but does make snafu's and along with Jake Long he has been our most durable lineman the past 3 years.

if you are henne and the coach tells you no mistakes are you 1.going downfield 25 yds. or 2. check it down over the middle for 2 yds??? enough said. no guts;noTD's. dont think for a minute our opponents dont know we play "small ball". if you play us you dont have to worry about chunk yds. or yac.

Making a guest appearance here. So those of you who know me from my old posts might know that I live in the Saratoga, NY area.

You may have also seen a couple of my posts about meeting Parcells at a restaurant near the Saratoga National golf course that he frequents.

Well I have some juicy info, possibly rumor but made sense when I was told about it.

A golf pro from the National that I met at a wedding Saturday told me he has golfed with Bill Parcells a few times, most recently last summer. He came right out and said, "it's too bad about Bill", and I said "yeah I know, but he did what he said he was going to do and now he's moving on". He didn't know what I was talking about and said "what, no, I mean with him being sick".

I was like ,,"WHAT"? And he said Bill had told him he hadn't been feeling well and was sick of going to the doctors. He said that's all Bill said because he's very private and he could tell Bill kind of let that one slip out. But then the guy said he wasn't surprised at what I said about him stepping down because he gathered from the conversation that it was more serious then a simple cold.

So yeah it could be this guy just trying to blow smoke up my a** and brag about knowing Parcells, in other words it could be a rumor he started to feel important. But it could also be true and could be the reason for the way Parcells left the Dolphins and the timing of it all. We've been told by a lot of the media that Parcells is all about the money and is leaving to collect his last year of pay while probably taking a job with another team.

And my point is since Bill is a private guy and doesn't tell the media or fans anything, reporters have to do their best to fill in the blanks. Everyone wanted answers about why he left but he obviously didn't tell anyone so they have to form their own conclusions. It's quite possible that Bill has a health issue and won't be taking a job anytime in the near future.

I know it could be BS but I wanted to share that with everyone so if it turns out I'm right I can take credit for getting the inside scoop! If I'm wrong I'll just blame it on the jacka** that lied to me. :)

DB,

With all due respect, your last post sounded like some patended Tony Sporano speak.

Repeatedly whiffing and actually watching your guy blow by to smash your Quarterback is more than just a snafu.

With the amount of NFL experience Carey has, it's just unacceptable. For whatever reasons, the guy is regressing fast.

Odinseye,

On Hilliard I'll put it like this: He's better than having nothing at all.

His power, speed, and instincts are average. He has both zero elussiveness and quickness. I see absolutely nothing in him to suggest he has any mentionable upside.

If Hilliard wasnt better than average on special teams he wouldnt even be on the roster. He's dead last on rb depth chart that feature an at times effective Ronnie Brown, at times effective Ricky Williams with a severe case of fumbilitis, and even behind a Cobb coming off of season ending reconstructive knee surgery.

Seems like a pretty unimpressive rb depth chart to be dead last on to me.

Odinseye,

Had to lmao at that one because after further review sir i award you the ball. LOL!

"We're 3-3 and we've lost to three teams that's 5-1. They are very good football teams, and we were in 2 of those games," Henning said.

And we've won against a team that is 4-3 but injury riddled, another that is 2-4 and another that is 0-6. So, we're 3-3 and we've beaten three teams that aren't very good or were decimated by injuries. And all three of those teams were in those games.

How these coaches hate the media and the fans. They are being defensive because they know they aren't doing their jobs.

Time for Chuckie and a new GM (any suggestions?)

Ireland = Spielman/Millen
Sparano = Wannstache with more enthusiasm for field goals/Rich Kotite
Henning = Rotting corpse/The Tom Olivadotti of Offense

Ahh why not, I'm going for two posts.

Just read a story about Dolphins fans who were yelled at by other Dolphins fans for standing up and cheering during defensive stands. They said the other Dolphins fans were mad because they wanted to sit and watch the game and could not see past them. They were called rude and obnoxious but said they didn't swear once.

They said that it was Steelers fans who came to their defense and said "You're SUPPOSED to scream and yell when the other offense is on the field"!

I'm more and more amazed each day at the stupidity of Dolphins fans from the southern Florida area. If you are not one of these people please don't take offense but know that you seem to be in the minority as far as fan support it south FLA. It's an absolute embarrassment to Dolphins fans every where. We are becoming known around the NFL for being bandwagon know nothings and I can no longer defend my fellow Dolphins fans. I now agree, we are the worst stadium fans in all of football.

And the fact that we lost our last 5 home games shouldn't be a mystery. Yeah the team could play better but every other team in the NFL has a home field advantage, our team does not. So look at those close losses and blame yourself just as much as you blame the team. You're supposed to be the 12th man and you're doing nothing. Hell, when the opposing QB (Rothliesberger) talks about how much he loves playing in Miami because it's almost like a home game with a big party then you have BIG problems. HUGE PROBLEMS.

NY SCOTT, sound like it could be the case .bill is 70 years old .

NYScott,

Way to hedge your bets-lol.

I said from the day of the announcement, the only thing that could ecuse the timing, would be health issues.

I myself was severely disappointed when I heard, but considering this, I guess I'll just say a prayer for the guy.

What have I become? Just yesterday here on the blog I was calling him a rat fink. I think I'll say a prayer for myself as well.

We'll see ALoco.

ODIN, always prays for the sick and the powerless .

p/s ///can you tell us what's you favorite prayer for tuna .

Aunt....DO YOU KNOW THAT GOOGLE HIRED REAL GOATS TO MOW THEIR MANY LAWNS ?

I like the way Henne looks overall , but I did not see the fire in his eyes and the end of the game last week like you see in the great qbs of this leauge, I am not saying he is great yet or anything but it seemed to me he looked like he wanted to be somewhere else I hope he has he make up to be at least a very good qb, and I don't care what the play call was he should have taken over the game at that point , the last drive that is, and should have throw the ball downfield, I don't think the coaches have the balls to bench him for trying to win the game when they lack in the nuts department,go FINS we really need this ONE

Aloco,

I usually say thank you prayers all day long, week in and week out. I am a firm believer in the power of prayer.

What Bill needs is what's refered to as an intercession prayer. I do my intercession prayers at Bed time.

With that being said, I think the prayer will go something like this:

Dear God,

You can't Tuna Fish, but you CAN Tuna Piano, Amen!

This might sound crazy to a mere mortal, but the Good Lord knows what's in my Heart!

I think Hartline is fast enough to go deep and Marshall will get anything you throw his way. Bess is always an option. Fasano and backs can catch and run. There is no reason not to open this offense up SOME! Henning is terrible! I have never seen the consistently bad play calling that is going on with this offense.

Mr. Parcells has been quoted as saying, "I have more money than I know what to do with it".

Armando, please publish your rules for writing in this Blog.

odinseye prays he doesnt end up looking like Mick Jaggar, the same way i pray nothing bad ever happens to the Jack Daniels Distillery.

Views from an Optimist . . .

"We're 3-3 and we've lost to three teams that's 5-1.
They are very good football teams, and we were in
2 of those games," ~ Dan Henning

Yes, it's sounds like excuse making, but THIS IS A TRUE STATEMENT! Just not one that we want to hear. But when you try to determine just how good your team is, you MUST take our hillacious schedule into account. With a couple Oaklands in our first 6 games, our record would likely be 4-2 (or better). And we don't have one "easy" (as IF!!!) game until we travel to Oakland in week 9! But in typical Fins fashion, that game will most certainly be much closer than it should be.

FROM EXPERIENCE: I'm a division 1 high school hockey coach, and I wish I had a nickel for every time I told a player how to react to certain situation, only to see that player go out and do the exact opposite! Then after the game, the parents predictably go on about how I can't coach and how I didn't have my players prepared and blah blah blah. I KNOW how to win. I TEACH them how to win. And we've PROVEN that we can win (2 championships in the last 4 seasons). So just where is the line drawn between the coach's responsibility and the player's?

FINS EXAMPLE: In those first 6 offensive plays against the Steelers after turnovers, there were 4 blatant missed blocks. Put that together with who we were playing and the outcome isn't so hard to believe. So do you blame the player(s) for missing the blocks?... or the coach, who, despite his best efforts, came up short in the "results" department?

I can tell you, as a coach, the buck MUST stop here, as Sporano admits ~ which is why you'll NEVER hear him bash his players in ANY interview. So what's left when a coach is asked a direct "why did we lose" question? You'll hear them state facts, like the Henning quote above. To us, it sounds like he's making excuses. But my coaching experience tells me that there's a fine line between an "excuse" and a "reason". The difference lies within the delivery of the message. And it's this conundrum that comprises 90% of what all the fans are pissing and moaning about.

We as fans don't have a hope of comprehending exactly why we are 3-3 and not 5-1, but the glass is half full and I believe that we're closer than most would admit to graduating from GOOD to GREAT.

LET'S GO FINS!!!

Bobbd12, did you ever been to a church ?

I think Henning will open it up some.

I think he knows he has too. My inside sources have informed me that Henning is installing a new fangled high tech play for just such circumstances.

On 3rd and long, were going to the "shotgun" formation. I'll explain in depth later for those of you that aren't familiar with this high tech weaponry.

Anyway, 3rd and long, shotgun formation, BAM!!!! The ole delayed inside handoff! Ha Ha, stick that in your pipes and smoke it.

Yessiree Bob, Henning knows we have to score points against a team that has a quarterback every bit as good as Sid Luckman.

NY Scott I hate to agree with your last post but i have to in a sense. Ive been a season ticket holder for 6 years. Ive moved sections twice (to upgrade) Its been the same in all the sections for the most part. I have to beg and pleed for fans to stand up and cheer when the time is right. They mostly look at me like I have 3 heads! I love this team and we have a ton of solid fans but some of them make me shake my head. The Steelers games IMO are always the worst with being close to out numbered!

Get rid of Sparano,Brown is too slow off the BAll , trips over anything and needs 10 yards to get up too speed.

ALoco why?If i want to pay money for a fantasy i will go to Disney World.

Not in Dade County, NYScott.

odinseye prays he doesnt end up looking like Mick Jaggar, the same way i pray nothing bad ever happens to the Jack Daniels Distillery.

Shows how much you know BobbyD, I already look like Mick Jagger, HA!

Or is it, Keith Richards?

No, wait, Keith Richards is who I pray too, cause he's God?

Great, now I'm confused, no wait, I got it!

Eric Clapton is God and I look like keith Richards, so THERE!

Christ, I need a drink!!!!

On defense if we could cover the tight end or the crossing receiver on 3rd and long we would be fine. Special teams is a joke all season.

Dade County= where the Rednecks, southern Negroes and Cubers lie in waiting.

it's nice to know odinseye is a man of god and he goes to church not like bobbyd12 who goes to church only when there's a weeding .

weeding???

Oh wedding sorry

oscar, what about Dade County? I'm not talking about specific towns and counties as much as I'm talking about the fans at the stadium.

Are you telling me that the 10% of fans at the stadium that cheer and yell and applaud are from Dade county? Well I don't know how you would know that but if it's true my hats off to Dade county. Now convince the other 90% of the stadium that are from other counties to start at least acting like they care.

Publish your guidelines, Armando.
