Sparano: Special teams players got better Mon.

Did you read the headline? Did you throw up?

Relax. Work with me, here, please.

Coach Tony Sparano just spoke to the media today and noted that in a game where the Miami special teams imploded -- allowing a 103-yard kickoff return, a field goal block returned for a touchdown, and a blocked punt that led to a touchdown -- there were parts of the special teams play that showed improvement from previous weeks and actually looked good.

Here's exactly how he stated the case:

"The hard thing, and I'm going to answer this question as honest as I can to answer it," Sparano said. "Tell me the return that came out there other than the big one? Tell me where we didn't ... "

His voice trailed off, before he picked up with a new thought ...

"So when I'm watching this film here the other night, am I pissed off? Sure," he said. "Obviously I'm pissed off. We can't cost ourselves points. We just can't do that. And we did.

"But when you break it down and take the three plays out of that tape, and you can't, they're part of the game, they change the game, no question about it. But when you do it and you take those plays out and start to watch the rest of the game, there were some really positive things done in that game.

"Guys like Nolan Carroll got better in that game. Reshad Jones got better in that game. Nobody said one word to me about Austin Spitler who played 14, 15 plays on special teams for the first time and played pretty darn good in that game. Well, you're going to say, 'Coach, how can they all play good?' There were three plays in the game, all in different phases and at different times in the game. That's not an excuse, but I just think they're fixable. And I trust the people in that room to fix them."

Obviously, Sparano trusts the new people in the room to fix the problem because he fired special teams coordinator John Bonamego on Tuesday. But all this suggests Sparano expects the players that are in the room, or at least some of them, are getting better.

He is, indeed, an glass-half-full person.

LET'S REMEMBER ALSO THAT PUNT WAS.......BLOCKED TWICE ONCE IN JETS GAME AND ONCE IN THE PATS .IN FACT THE NEW ENGLAND ST ASSISTANT SAID HE STUDIED THE TAPE OF THE JETS BLOCKING THE PUNT WHIILE OUR PIZZA GUY WAS PUSY WATCHING THE GOD FATHER MOVIE .

THANKS POIZEN AND GREG Z

its normal for us fin fans to be pissed as we were embarassed on MNF in front of 22 million people. we need to hear some intelligent words from our delusional coach who thinks "we did some good things out there,we really did". don't believe what you just witnessed etc etc etc. geez, stop the BS!

Aloco LOL!

Go Phins MON!

We will look at the film and get that cleaned up...I think I just spit out my Bong Water and I don't even have a Bong or smoke!

Bonermango Bongomego

Go Phins MON!

D. Carpenter is a liability at best! Allen is a stop gap CB!!! Period!!!! The bottom line is that we are still 1-2years away from upending the jets and the patriots. I like to think that we had a shot this year but that was wishful thinking. C. Hennie....the jury is still out on him.

Peterson will take over this team on Jan 3rd after NE kicks our butts again...Cowher is named head coach on Jan 4th and the new era begins!

sparano said marshall wasnt open in the 1st half so we didnt throw to him. jaws and gruden said he has to be thrown to. has sparano ever heard of setting up pick plays to free a receiver? if not watch last years tape of how the colts and saints got their featured receivers open for long gains and gutted us. we cant pay a guy 50 million to be a decoy.

if cowher came here that would be awesome, finally a coach who would try and win games. this season will be awful but lets hope it cost the entire staff their jobs

Spoken like a true coach on the hot seat, trying to save his own a*s. He's become so predictable. I'd love to be a fly on the wall of Boss Ross.

agree with greg z. marshall can out jump any corner in the league...throw the damn ball to your $50M player

On a serious note... Sparano keep saying that the defense did a simple twist after the block in the Jets game. That they would "get that cleaned up". So the scary thing is that they know the problem so either the team doesn't understand (stupid)? Aren't talented enough to execute or the coaching staff can't get through to them?

Go Phins Yah MON!

coaching is awful. they need to go, least we will get a good draft pick this year

marshall is getting very frustrated but its not with the opposition;its with his own QB and coaching staff. he doesnt want the ball delivered late or behind him. our coaches need to get up to game speed. if one QB isnt doing it, substitutions are hereby allowed. same for the rest of the players. charles grant, jason taylor and micah johnson can all tackle and wanted to be dolphins. instead we bring in dallas castoffs.

The bottom line is, Sparano's job security can be directly correlated to how easy it is to fill the seats at the stadium as the schedule progresses. This "Dallas Cowboys East" experiment is becoming a big joke, with the architect bailing out before even finishing the job. I don't imagine Boss Ross will tolerate it for too long. One would expect him to protect his investment by having a consultations/evaluations with unbiased industry experts. Lastly, Bill Cowher sure would make a good coach in Miami, ya think?

Is Coach Tony Sparano ready to join his friend in
the unemployment line???

ive never been more disgusted. been a dolfan since 1973, its not the loss its the hopelessness setting in that this regime cant do doesnt get and is constantly outcoached. example. te kellar, two 100yd games coming into the game, no edwrds for at least the first quarter and no holmes, yet does Dc play his def like he doesnt know kellers going to be the main target? does it take him an entire half to adjust? OUTCOACHED. example, the 2nd rd and free agent mistakes are have set this team back more than the team will admitt, Parcells building form is outdated, he's never been a pass first guy and you have to be in this league now. Ronnie brown stands around to much and never hits the hole running, thats why ricky has more yards every game. This staff ropes henne in whenever he throws a pick. Notice how after an int he throws nothing but short passes, this regime is more concerned about its own QB not beating them than letting their QB win it for them. Thats parcells influence over this staff that has to go

EVERYONE ON THIS BLOG NEEDS TO READ THIS, INCLUDING YOU MANDO...

his dude goes off but food for thought (very offensive language)

Go Phins???

If the glass is half full of crap, what do you have. Half full or half empty. It is still crap. I really like Sparano. But I am not supposed to like him, I want him to build a team that wins. He doesn't have to call guys out but think of this. Henne and the receiving corps didn't exactly respond to the controversy. On 2 great drives he throws ints when he could have put the game away in the first half. Ricky runs great in the first half and then stops? Great teams overcome adversity and this team imploded. 14 points against a weak NE team? C,mon where is the positive. They score 7, you score 10. Easy math.

TS could be completely right about the special teams overall getting better, but the reality is that all it takes in for one split second of inattention by one player, and it's all over for the whole squad.

"except for 3 plays, we're good".......and if it hadn't been for the Hundred Year War, it would have been a he'll of a century!

Note to Sparano: You were right the fans do deserve better. So please do not insult our intelligence with drivel like that at a press conf.

My personal opinion is that Dan Henning needs to go too. His playcalling has destroyed this teams identity. They used to be a power running team. Now I don't think they know what they are.

John Bonwhatever.. You are no Michigan man, just a wannta be. Sure don't know a thing about Henne and his career at Michigan!

You know we ran 488 good laps except for the 1 that I drove the car into the wall and flipped over as the car disintegrated and lost the race. lets focus on the 488 good laps

IT SOUNDS LIKE COMEDY CENTRAL .LOL @ laphinsphan

I want to see Sporano pissed off and blowing like a volcano after this kind of debacle.

My kind of coach would've needed a spit guard to protect the reporters in the room.

Special teams improved?

Special teams? Are you kidding me?

If they were any more special they'll be riding the short bus to Green Bay!

Special F_cking ED!!!!

i'd like to understand sparano's press conference. can anyone translate jibberish???

Hey maybe my grandkids will see the Dolphins playing in the superbowl,by then it will be flag football.
Bring Bill Cowher, someone that can make calls in critical situations. I can coach too, give an offensive coordinator, a defense coordinator, special teams coach, some one to hold it while I pee, all I have to do is scream at players to execute. Belicheat is the coach for everything.

thats me, my brother (holding the sign) and my cousin. I had hoped to write go fins....3-1.....that didnt work out. 2 weeks in a row I shelled out a ton of coin to watch shiit play calling and even worse ST. Something has to change in a hurry.

Translate? Allow me:

The hard thing, and I'm going to answer this question as honest as I can to answer it," Sparano said. "Tell me the return that came out there other than the big one? Tell me where we didn't ... "

His voice trailed off, before he picked up with a new thought ...

Translation: I'm so sick of this sheet I can't even make sentences!

"So when I'm watching this film here the other night, am I pissed off? Sure," he said. "Obviously I'm pissed off. We can't cost ourselves points. We just can't do that. And we did.

Translation: I'm so pissed off I can't even make sentences.

But when you do it and you take those plays out and start to watch the rest of the game, there were some really positive things done in that game.

You all watched the game, what the F_CK you expect to say?

"Guys like Nolan Carroll got better in that game. Reshad Jones got better in that game. Nobody said one word to me about Austin Spitler who played 14, 15 plays on special teams for the first time and played pretty darn good in that game.

Translation: Did I just say that out loud? God I can't believe I just said that. Man, do I need a drink! I'm getting ripped tonight!

ODIN BACK FROM HIS ASYLUME .

FINS ST WERE GOOD WHEN THE JETS BLOCKED
FINS ST WERE REAL GOOD WHEN PATS BLOCKED AND SCORED A TD .

TO BE OR NOT TO BE

Lets play Sparano, hartline, henning, bonamego, the waterboys at special teams.
Not Wake or Allen

sparano may have to man-up and admit he has done a poor job of getting the team ready to compete. he is the 4th best coach in our division. its really the way we lost;with no fight??? marshall is the only player who shows any emotion. geez.

THANKS ODINSEYE FOR THE TRANSLATION . NOW I AM GOING TO WATCH THE GAME WITHOUT THOSE 3 PLAYS .WE STILL LOST .

TO BE OR NOT TO BE

wow, the dolphins are the sports world's disfunctional family. no one knows what the hell is going on!

ODIN, YOU think sparano losing weight made him less effective as a coach since he has to worry about his looks more now ?

Damn!
LT is one of the AFC's player of the week.

Aloco,

It took two weeks of pain killers, booze and belting out the blues.

I think I'm over it now, the high expectation thing. It was a little touch and go for awhile there, but I think I'm going to be fine, I really do, I really believe that.

The Sheriffs dept only temporarily detained me. They decided not file any charges the next morning and my Attorney doesn't think the State Police will either.

I didn't do a good enough job apparently, but I know where the idiots hangout so I'll probably be back in the drunk tank by Saturday night.

I just don't have a good sense of humor when the Dolphins are playing like a football follies highlight reel.

If sparano had his way, we would have Special Teams of the Year!!!!Doh!!!!!

bill-cnnors,

how many differnt named are you gonna post under. we get it. u wsnt cowher to be the coach. WE GETIT!

Where is Camshaft when you need him?

i don't like cowher as a head coach .what did he win in al the 15 years in PIT ? one lousy ring .if he comes here he will be out in 4 years .

WTF!!

Ive been saying since last year sparano is not the type of coach we need!! For one the guy literaly has a fist pumping party when we run a wildcat on 3 and 6 lose 5 yards and kick a FG!! Now does that make him look at all competitive? NOPE!
And the way he continues to talk to the fans and media with his BS putting spin on EVERYTHING statements just shows hes not in control and is more of a politician than coach!!!
Sparano sucks we need a tough coach i think rex ryan is a lil over confident and brash but hell i like the way he tells it like it is!!!

Sparano sucks we need a tough

WTF????????????, Now I know why tony wears sunglasses, He is smoking the mighty Cannabis....

"Everything was going great, Until the Indians showed up....................................." General George S Custer

you know whats weird....

i'm listening to ESPN today and most fans that called in saw that game as a total fluke. they thought we were the better team. that is the first time in the NFL history that has happend....u sersiously doubt it will happen again anytime soon....not even to us

WHY NOT US!!!!!!!

lets see if ross has the footballs to cut that coaching staff sooner rather than later. let's start scouting qbs,and rbs for next years draft.

Cuban, i agree! Mando, i'm flabergasted! So when, according to coach tony, are we expected to see improvement....in all areas...
next game? next season? or next generation? in sparano's interview after the game he said the fans had a right to be dissapointed....well, we are! accross the board, it is not just the players!

I'm hoping it's just Sporano's policy not to speak negatively about the team to the press.

Behind closed doors I'm hoping it's an entirely different scenario.

Somebody has to light a fire under these guy a s s e s

Dont know about that, Inconsistancys over 4 games cant be called a fluke, D shows, O does not, Offense shows up, Defense does not, and when they try to gell, ST's implodes. Regardless miami needs an identity at some point and im not sure that even the coaches or players know what that is yet!!!!

Next 4 games @ Green bay, Pittsburgh,@Cinn,@Balt......... Ouch.........

gentlemen we are 2-2.
according to many of u fair-weather-fans we are suppose to be 0-4 or 1-3 at best.

agreed its not the 2-2 i was envisioning, but its better than the 0-3 from the last couple of years.

in 4 weeks if were 5-3 in 4 weeks we will be primed for a long playoff run....write it down naysayers

WHY NOT US!!!!!!

ODIN,

1- DO YOU R.BROWN PLAYING IN A WAY MAKING HE DESN'T GET INJURED AGAIN TO SIGN A GOOD CONTRACT NEXT SEASON ?

2-IS IT BETTER TO FIRE THE WHOLE PIZZA COACHING STAFF NOW TO SALVAGE THE SEASON AND THE TICKET SALES OR NOT ?

3-WHEN ROSS SIGNED MARSHALL OVER THE TUNA DISAPPROVE OF THE DEAL IS A BIG MISTAKE IF WE CAN'T GET THE BALL TO HIM ?

4-TO BE OR NOT TO BE
