Tony McDaniel: New rules on hits slowed me down

The NFL's new mandate against helmet-to-helmet hits and focus on protecting defenseless players did its job in that no such hits were deemed delivered this weekend and the NFL did not impose any fines for such hits.

But if you ask Dolphins defensive end Tony McDaniel, the focus on not delivering such contact had an unintended and unwelcome affect on him.

"I honestly could say, myself, on some plays when I had a clear shot at the quarterback, I kind of slowed down and made sure I hit him in the right spot," McDaniel said. "I definitely think it slows us down a little bit as far as speed and thinking about a fine -- a $75,000 fine, a $50,000 fine. Some guys that's four or five-game game checks so it slows the game down a lot.

"I could say me personally as a player it slowed me down. Most definitely."

Ouch.

McDaniel believes the outgrowth of the new focus on helmet-to-helmet hits is that players will tackle lower. You saw such a tackle by cornerback Sean Smith on Pittsburgh receiver Hines Ward. And that kind of play will limit head shots and concussions.

But it will increase the pain elsewhere: At the knees.

"I would rather get a concussion than blow out an ACL," McDaniel said. "Guys are definitely going to go lower now."

ALoco, u using same keyboard as Dying or is ypurs also stuck on caps?

DyingBreed, Eli Manning is terribly inconsistent too. I guess your definition of bust and mine are different. Ka-Jami Carter (remember, RB from Penn St.), to me, THAT'S a bust. A 2nd-year player who was inconsistent isn't a bust, he's a player that needs more work. He could have been coached up, maybe surprised you guys. Who would have though Yeremiah would EVER have made the ProBowl (even if he did back into it)? Not me. He's better than I expected at the beginning of his career. I didn't expect Sean Smith to start last year. He did fairly well. Too bad to went backwards, but he's still not a bust because it's too early to tell. Young players need time to develop. TED GINN, THAT'S a bust!

That was another BS call from the officials in that game.....the unsportsman-like conduct on McDaniel. It was the Steeler player who continued after the whistle for like 5 seconds.

DC Dolfan I agree with your point earlier that Miami's front office has had many hits as well as misses. Drafting - Long,Vontae Davis, Langford, Misi (looks promising). Also undrafted FA Carpenter and Bess. FA's Marshall, Dansby, Cam Wake (CFL). They have some solid building blocks. They still need a few more pieces like a starting FS, CB opposite of Davis and a NT on D. On O they need to draft a RB this year. Ronnie makes me sick. He runs too soft for a 230 lb RB. I say resign Ricky as the change of pace RB and someone to teach the young RB. Also a that speed receiver DyingBreed is calling for would make all the other pieces fall in place nicely. A pass catching TE wouldn't hurt either. Still a lot to address IMO. I want an O cordinator who is aggressive and not stuck in 1970 like Henning and a RB who doesn't run out of bounds or tip toe like Ronnie.

I also agree that this team is close and has pieces to be good. I still like Sparano because he gets the most out of his so so talent.

bobbyd12 is correct. we got this big arm QB and a 50 million dollar receiver and we cant throw long? our excuse before was penningtons arm. whats the new excuse???? last year we even kept cam wake on the bench so we could play porter. just finished listening to sparano's news conf.; wow, he wouldnt do anything different even after losing. doing same plays, looking for different results. its definition of a crazy coach.

the room ireland and sparano lock themselves into for the draft must have a carbon monoxide leak!!!! that would explain their picks and dez' interview.

DCDOLPHIN,

REMEMBER I SAID MERLING'S CLOSEST THING TO A BUST "WITHOUT" ACTUALLY BEING A BUST. WILDLY INCONSISTENT. I WOULD ACCEPT "STEADY" FROM HIM.

USING ELI MANNING AS AN EXAMPLE OF WILDLY INCONSISTENT MAYBE TRUE TO A POINT, BUT HOW MANY SB RINGS HAS MERLING BROUGHT US? ELI MANNING =1 PHILLIP MERLING = 0.

WONDER IF THE GIANTS ARE WILLING TO TRADE ELI FOR MERLING? I THINK NOT!

THE MIDGET SPAZANO PLAYED OL IN A POP WARNER ELI LEAGUE. THAT'S HIS NFL EXPERIENCE,, MY CAPS ARE LOCKED TOO.

also bring a decent FS please. The position is crucial in a pass happy league.

Clemons lacks the most important tool for a FS: instinct.

The guy is always 10 yards away from the ball on long pass plays (does he know he's supposed to be the last defender?), and sometimes he looks lost (did you see him on the crucial 3rd down pass to Mewelde Moore?).

He'not even a good tackler.

Andy NJ, agreed on Ronnie Brown. he is easily the most disappointing Dolphin this year and one of the 3 main main culprits for our offense not being top 10. Guess he's made enough money in his career - the stomach is full - that wolf doesn't need feeding it appears.

ok. there.lol

IMO YEREMIAH BELL IS AN "OVERAHCIEVER." UNFORTUNATELY HIS ALTERNATE PRO BOWL APPEARANCE IS HIS CEILING.

BELL IS A HIGHLY KEEPABLE PIECE IN OUR DEFENSE BUT AT THE SAME TIME HIGHLY UPGRADABLE IF THE RIGHT PLAYER IS AVAILABLE THROUGH EITHER DRAFT OR FREE AGENCY.

BELL'S COVERAGE SKILLS ARE ONLY AVERAGE. HAS A PENCHANT FOR MISSING KEY TACKLES AT TIMES TOO. OVERALL RATING IS KEEPABLE BUT HIGHLY UPGRADABLE.

I'll admit that I've been dumping on Henne but I think the guy is being hampered by our sorry offensive coord. We need an agressive thinking/coaching OC that will give Henne the wings to go forward, the confidence to throw that ball to BMarshall with plays that do just that. Henning is plodding along and we cannot succeed and grow as a team...I don't know who makes the decision, Sparano or Ireland, but someone has to step up and realize we aren't winning with his plays.

if the phins blow up in cincy the penis that wears glasses that calls himself the gm will make major changes next week.watch!

schotty and rex recently gave sanchez the "keys" to the offense. rex said they had been to strict with him about ball security and he wasnt developing. this new approach has worked wonders for him. ya think henning/sparano would take the hint???? handcuffs have to come off even if mistakes are made. thats how we all learn. thats how henne will develop or not. at least we will know.

Cant believe the negativity here. We won some tuff games, lost some tuff games. The season is far from lost. Win some road games and we are back in the division race. Sparano coaches a hard nosed team that can win late in the season. I think this team will improve as the season continues. unlike all the other teams thar have wilted on the road late in the season. Even with Shula and Marino in charge.

Mark in Toronto, LMAO. Yea he just doesn't have the "IT" factor for a guy drafted so high. He doesn't run hard at all. I remember watching him bowl guys over and bounce off tackles in his rookie year. Maybe the injuries have already caught up or he thinks if he stays healthy he could get a better pay day but his production isn't there for a RB drafted #2 overall or for a first rounder for that matter. I guess that;s why it is a rule of thumb to not draft a RB high. There are exceptions but he wasn't one of them. Good riddance Ronnie.

WHY THE HELL WASNT VONTAE DAVIS ASSIGNED TO HINES WARD? 7 CATCHES 132YDS. WHAT THE HELL WAS OUR NICKEL CORNER SAPP DOING DEFENDING THIER #1WR?

WASNT THERE A GAME EARLIER THIS SEASON WE TRIED THIS WITH SAPP AND WE WERE BURNT FOR A LONG TD? GUESS STEELERS OC WATCHED THAT TAPE.

THE POSTER THAT SAID CHRIS CLEMONS SEEMS TO HAVE 0 INSTINCTS IN THE PASSING PHASE OF THE GAME IS ABSOLUTELY CORRECT!

HINES WARD DOESNT HAVE DEP SPEED THAT PLACE THE FEAR GOD INTO ANY DEFENSE. SO AS A FS IT MAKES MORE SENSE TO CHEAT TO SIDE OF MIKE WALLACE ON EVERY PASSING PLAY.

BECAUSE WE PLAY HIGH/LOW WITH OUR SAFETIES WITH CLEMONS BEING HIGH AS OUR LAST LINE OF DEFENSE. YOU GOTTA CHEAT TO THE SIDE OF THE GREATER SPEED THREAT.

IF HE CHEATS TO NEITHER SIDE AND REMAINS IN THE MIDDLE HE'S ALWAYS CAUGHT IN NO MAN'S LAND. THUS HE'LL NEVER MAKE A PLAY ON THE BALL. WHICH IS CURRENT ZERO PASSES DEFENSED FOR THE SEASON SEEMS TO FULLY INDICATE.

WHY EVEN HAVE A FS IN THE PASS DEFENSE IF HE'S GOING TO BE VIRTUALLY NON-EXISTENT IN THE PASSING GAME ANYWAY?

AGREE. clemons is very seldom in a position to help a corner on a speed receiver. jason allen was hung out to dry by himself with no safety help more than once. where is our deep safety on long passes;its always a one on one.

WHAT DO YOU SUGGEST, PRETEND OUR DEFICIENCIES DONT EXIST? IF YOU'LL NOTICE WE TALK ABOUT THE GOOD AS WELL AS THE BAD HERE. UNFORTUNATELY AFTER A LOSS THE BAD IS ALWAYS MORE GLARING THAN THE GOOD. WE'RE BASICALLY DISGUSSING HOW WE CAN BE BETTER.

IS THERE A PROBLEM WITH THAT?

Bobbyd12, i don't use the cap key any more ,just in emergency as the case w/Chris .

go fins.....ted ginn ......yes

the 50 million man.....no

Dying Breed I agree and disagree with your last 2 post.

Agreed that Y. Bell is a classic over achiever and he is at best a Pro Bowl alternate (lol great analogy btw) but you can't have an upgrade at every single position. He is a strong tackler and average in coverage but he isn't the problem. The problem is finding someone who is a legit starter across from Vontae and also FS. Clemons isn't a complete liability and maybe it's growing pains on the job but he hasn't made any impact plays from the FS spot. He probably shouldn't be a starter.

I also agree with you and I am getting sick of the defensive philosophy of not putting Vontae on the best WR. It hurt Miami this past weekend and also the Jets game with Braylone Edwards because J. Allen had his period and failed to properly breakdown.

Dying, your cap posts looks real good not annoying like mine .

C'mon Mondo, don't tote the stupid ESPN line with this "new mandate" garbage. It's not new, it's only now being enforced. Player have been forbidden from helmet to helmet for years, it was just not called very often. Besides, someone should notify that if more players tackled lower instead of going high, as they were taught as youngsters, Benny Sapp would not have totally blown the play that allowed Hines Ward to score. That was inexcusable and he should have been cut right there on the sideline for that terrible attempt at a tackle.

ABSOLUTELY CORRECT ANDYNJ,

I FEEL BETTER WHEN THIER BEST BEATS OUR BEST. VONTAE RECOVERS AND PLAYS WELL EVEN AT TIMES WHEN THAT DOES OCCUR.

BUT TO PUT YOUR LESS THAN YOUR VERY BEST ON THIER VERY BEST AND GET DOMINATED IS TOTALLY INEXCUSABLE. OUR VERY BEST WR IS AN OFFENSIVE DECOY AND THEY SEEM TO BE MAKING VONTAE THE DEFENSIVE DECOY.

WHEN ARE WE JUST GOING TO PLAY FOOTBALL THE WAY ITS SUPPOSED TO BE PLAYED. THIER BEST AGAINST OUR BEST. THIS COACHING STAFF SEEMS TO MOST TIMES DO THE OPPOSITE THINKING THEY ARE GOING TO CATCH THE OPPONENT OFF GUARD.

IT HASNT WORKED YET AND IS HIGHLY DOUBTFUL TO WORK IN THE FUTURE. THE SEEM TO OUTSMART THEMSELVES RATHER THAN OUT SMARTING THE OPPONENT.

EVEN THOUGH WE DO HAVE A FEW PROBLEMS NEED RESOLVING PERSONEL WISE. EVERY GAME WE SEEM TO COMPOUND THOSE PROBLEMS WITH POOR IN GAME DECISIONS.

No Problem here, what is YOURS? I don't know if anyone saw PTI last night but Tony K. stated that if the scale on which Miami got screwed was measurable to 1 - 100 it was a 200. Miami did everything to win the game. Stopped them on the Goal line, stopped Pitt to kick some field goals, and caused turnovers. Yes they should have had more points but 22-20 wins the game. Not 23-22 and try again. I love how hard nosed this team is and how Sparano has them always ready to play each week. Maybe Henning needs to go, but I would also be cautious with a young QB facing Pitt D.

AS FAR AS IN GAME DECISIONS DON SHULA IS THE VERY BEST WE EVER HAD. THAT'S WHY HE WAS ALWAYS KNOWN TO DO FAR MORE WITH FAR LESS TALENT.

SHULA NEVER BEAT HIMSELF WITH HIS IN GAME DECISION MAKING. THIS CURRENT STAFF DOES IT AT LEAST 3-4 TIMES PER GAME.

IF DON SHULA HAD THIS CURRENT ROSTER IM NEARLY 100% CERTAIN WE WOULD BE 5-1 RIGHT NOW. SHULA DOES NOT BEAT HIMSELF.

im tired of playing not to loose. How many other teams play that way? No guts no glory.

DECK,

THERE ARE HUGE PROBLEMS WITH OUR IN GAME DECISION MAKING PROCESS TOO. FROM PLAY CALLING TO GAME MANAGEMENT, TO PROPER USE OF PERSONEL.

VONTAE GUARDS #2 WR'S, MARSHALL BECOMES $47 MILLION DECOY IN THE REDZONE, HENNE'S NOT ALLOWED TO CALL AUDIBLES AND THAT FORCES HIM TO BURN CRUCIAL TIMEOUTS.

BURNING TIMEOUTS INSTEAD OF USING AUDIBLES ALMOST ALWAYS DOOMS AT THE END OF CLOSE GAMES. WE HAD ZERO TIMEOUTS AND THE PLAY CALLING WAS ATROCIOUS ON THE FINAL THWARTED DRIVE AGAINST PITT.

DON SHULA WOULD HAVE THIS CURRENT TEAM SITTING 5-1. HE KNOWS PROPER USE OF PERSONEL AND DOESNT PLACE HIMSELF AT A DISADVANTAGE MAKING IN GAME DECISIONS.

SHULA DID MORE WITH LESS. THE REGION SEEMS TO DO LESS WITH MORE. THIS TEAM HAS BETTER TALENT THAN WHAT THE 3-3 RECORD INDICATES. THERE'S CLEAR EVIDENCE OF DECISION MAKING ISSUES AFTER EVERY LOSS.

i hate it win people post. in all CAPS its retrated as hell

trading pennington does not make sense. we would be giving the ace up our sleeve to another team who was ill prepared. the fins have the best scenario in the league sould an injury occur to henne. also, keeping pennington on the roster insures teams who prioritized wrong will pay and teams like the fins who carefully built their roster with such an instance in mind will prevail. why give our ace to dallas? there is no player valuable enough to rid ourselves of this unique situation we currently have at QB!

This season hasn't been all negative so far. The Good, Bad and Ugly.

The Good - Some nice progression from young guys. Vontae and Cam Wake look like future Pro Bowlers and studs for years to come. Dansby is the real deal. Misi and John Jerry have had some nice moments as rookies.

The Bad - Inconsitancy from Henne. He is up and down and we expect that but his decsions vs Patriots was horrible ( he almost single handedly sent Rob Ninkovich to the Pro Bowl).

The Ugly - 0-3 at home through 3 home games. Teams that are legit playoff contenders would find a way to pull out at least the Steelers game. The "fumble" aside, Miami still had the ball last. Dan Henning also falls under the ugly. His play calling is atrocious. He calls trick/gadget plays like the Wild Cat and reveres at the worst time. He also calls it just when Henne is getting the most important thing for a young QB which is rhythm.

I don't know DB, I remember Thurman Thomas beating the Dolphin's singlehandedly in the playoffs like 35,000 times undeer Shula. It's eventually what cost him his job don't you think?

dying you r right. time for Tony to be coach and overide some stupid playcalling. and for his wife to sit him down and tell him to stop being so stupid.

Hahhaa, "Tony, stop being so stupid all your life"

on to Ciny. What do we do? Throw the OC playbook in garbage. Time to shake things up. Hell give penny the chance to draw some plays to use. Time for the fossil to play golf with Bill all day.

THURMAN THOMAS? IN THOSE THE DAYS THE BILLS WERE FAR SUPERIOR IN PURE TALENT TO US. THEY WERE FAR SUPERIOR ON THE OFFENSIVE SIDE OF THE BALL COMPARED TO OUR DEFENSIVE TALENT AT THE TIME.

THEY HAD THE FAR SUPERIOR DEFENSE AND WE HAD ZILCH AT RB TO SUPPORT MARINO. YET STILL SHULA CONSISTENTLY GOT THOSE TEAMS INTO THE PLAYOFFS.

IT WAS VERY DIFFICULT TO ADD BETTER UPPER ECHELON TALENT TO OUR ROSTER BECAUSE WE CONSISTENTLY DRAFTED IN THE VERY HIGH TEENS TO MID TWENTIES IN THE DRAFT.

SHULA DID GET THE MAX OUT OF WHAT HE HAD. UNLIKE THIS CURRENT REGION IS SEEMING TO DO WITH BUNGLED PERSONEL AND IN GAME DECISION MAKING.

REMEMBER THE BILLS ALSO LOST 4 SB' WHEN FACED AGAINST TEAMS EQUALLY MATCHING THEM TALENT WISE. WE NEVER HAD ENOUGH PURE FIRE POWER TO MATCH THEM ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BALL.

A RESOUNDING MISMATCH ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BALL IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO OVERCOME NO MATTER HOW GREAT YOUR COACHING IS.

DO YOU THINK THIS CURRENT REGION COULD REACH THE SB AND BE ONLY 1 BUSTED PLAY AWAY FROM VICTORY WITH DAVID WOODLEY AS THE STARTING QB?

WHEN MARINO TOOK US TO THE SB IN 1984 EVERYTHING KIND OF WORKED OUT JUST RIGHT.

STEELERS WERE IN DECLINE, RAIDERS WERE TRYING TO RETOLL, THE ELWAY ERA WAS JUST BEGINNING, AND BUFFALO WAS JUST BEGINNING TO ADD THE FINAL PIECES TO MAKE A 4 SB LOSS RUN.

THAT YEAR WE WERE PRETTY MUCH CREAM OF THE AFC CROP BY DEFAULT. STILL GIVE SHULA CREDIT FOR THIS BECAUSE THE DOOR WAS WIDE OPEN FOR NEARLY EVERYONE AND HE TOOK ADVANTAGE.

UNFORTUNATELY AT THAT TIME THE NFC HAD THE SUPERIOR TEAM. AGAIN SUPERIOR OVERALL TALENT ADDE WITH SOLID COACHING IS PRETTY MUCH IMPOSSIBLE TO OVER COME.

WITH SHULA WE ALMOST NEVER LOST A GAME WE WERE SUPPOSED TO WIN AND NUMEROUS TIMES WON GAMES WE WERE SUPPOSED TO LOSE.

fins need to start with a new oc

Dying, I didn't use Eli as an example to compare him and Merling. Apples and oranges. I just brought up Eli to say he was wildly inconsistent (still is), and look, in the right situation, he was still able to bring a SB ring to NY. So an inconsistent player can learn to get better, or can get hot at the right time. But really, Merling is neither here nor there because he's going to the Big House, not the Bright Lights.

Actually, I'm more in line with your response to Deck. What you were saying (which was correct IMO) was that while maybe they're getting a lot from these players, they can use them better and get more. In total agreement with that. You give us a hot OC (i.e. Linehan and Norv Turner a few years ago) and I think you'd see a HUGE improvement with the offense we have now. We score a couple more TDs, and we can win with the defense we have.

So my point is even with a young team, I think the possibilities are there to win. Like you mentioned, we get a speedy WR across from Brandon, and you might have last year's Saints offense (if Henne steps up a little). We get a Chris Johnson-like RB, then forget about it.

I just cringe when posters on here act like the sky is falling (not that you're one of them, but many here are) when it's just dark and cloudy.

all the bloggers today are wiring back 14 years back ,
TO REMEMBER THE OLD DAYS .WHO TO BLAME FOR THAT ?
HENNING ?
WHAT A TRAGEDY .

get ready for a 6-10 season!

dolphin77, even 6-10 or 3-13 ,i WILL ALWAYS LOVE MY TEAM AND STAND READY TO SUPPORT IT .IT'S THE MIAMI DOLPHINS OUR TEAM .

I see a lot of Ronnie Brown bashing going on.
I agree he is not his same old self.
Probably has something to do with a contract or lack thereof.
I believe a beast still lives within him.
Still the same, I suppose I should prepare to change my Post name next year.

hell yeah, they just need to put the RIGHT pieces in place.

R.BROWN IS SAVING EVERY THING HE HAS FOR THE NEW CONTRACT,HE DOESN'T WANT TO GET IJURED AGAIN ,DANCING IS SAVER THAN RUNNING THROUGH 1000 Ib MEN . HE'S JELOUS TO SEE BESS MAKING MORE THAN HIM .

Fins need to put Pennington in a seat next to Henning and allow him to help with the play calling.

He could probably help Henning snap out of any "senior moment" in his play calling (someone to bounce off play calling ideas).

If not Pennington, then his future replacement.

What's Soarano gonna do Henne hits Marshall on an 80 yard go route for a TD? If he Fist Pump for a field goal what will he do with a TD?

Go Phins!

MARTIN, THIS IS THE WAY SPARANO learned how to cheer for his team ,he's being himself .

******STICKY KEY BOARD???*******

Cap Lock Key Stuck???

That is just Gross!

I'm thinkin too much Fist Pump?

Go Phins!

How many games will Sparano allow Henne to lose before he puts Pennington in?

you know what must drive Stephen Ross out of his mind? the same thing that drives me and most fans nuts...the O-line is giving the QB time to throw, henne has a cannon arm, Ross pays BIG money for a big time elite reciever in the image of randy moss who can get deep. yet he is still catching the same short passes that CAMARILLO would've caught but for a lot more money. Refs made a bad decision with the rothilsberger TD. another BAD decision is everytime henne UNDER-utilizes marshall and decides NOT to throw to him deep opting to throw ordinary ordinary passes that any ordinary reciever(camarillo) would catch! the way i see it, this is the same offense as last year with a guy named marshall substituting for camarillo. UNDERUTILIZED !!! seems like a waste of money and time! and it will be such until henne's habitual happy-feet check-downs go away! i wonder if the bengals watched film and noticed when henne is flushed out of the pocket that he IMMEDIATELY goes to his safety-valve checkdown???**!?? i know i did. WAKE-UP HENNE!!!!!!

CHAD, P started last year w/ 00000000000000000000000000-3

praise the lord

Great News!!!!

The NFL in an effort to increase scoring will remove the Goal Post for Sunday's Dolphins Bengals game.

There will be NO Field Goals or extra points.

There will also be NO Time Outs. As The coaches don't know how to utilize them anyway.

Miami Dolphins Coach Tony Sparano was Quoted as saying "I QUIT! WTF? No Field Goals"!

Karlos Dansby was Quoted as saying " Like I said God Provides, Like I said dats good Like I said because Like I said"...

did any one have seen sapp ?

Hines Ward saw him in the rear-view mirror.

have any one have seen the 50 million man ?

why can't we score DT any more ?
