Dolphins indeed are interested in Randy Moss

Are the Dolphins interested in Randy Moss?

The degree of Miami's interest in Moss, however, depends on whom I'm speaking with. According to several NFL sources, the Dolphins spent part of Monday studying the possibility that they might 1.) put in a waiver claim for the Minnesota Vikings wide receiver if he ultimately ends up on waivers as has been reported by various national outlets and a couple of local Minnesota outlets. 2.) The club also is considering whether to move on Moss if he clears waivers and becomes a free agent.

The consideration is serious enough, according to one Moss family source, that general manager Jeff Ireland called agent Joel Segal to inquire about any interest Moss may have in playing for the Dolphins. Segal did not return calls Monday evening.

[UPDATE: A Dolphins source texted me this morning and said Ireland has not called Segal. The source did confirm, however, that Miami is interested in Moss.]

None of this means the Dolphins are definitely going to get Randy Moss. So stop hyper-ventilating. Remember Miami is 18th in the waiver claim order now so teams such as St. Louis and Oakland and Wshington , Seattle and Kansas City are ahead of Miami and can land Moss ahead of the Dolphins.

But the interest at least shows a degree of desire to improve what, frankly, is an incomplete offense.

Moss does have an offseason home in South Florida. He's a Miami Heat fan (maybe the Dolphins should have LeBron James call him). And the Dolphins are in the playoff hunt.

But aside from that, there is no connection between Moss and the Dolphins, so one cannot say Miami is a favorite to land Moss. I would say if Moss is indeed cut, the New England Patriots are a team most likely to get him. (That is just my opinion, not a fact.)

Fact: Moss loves playing in New England.

Fact: Moss loves playing for Bill Belichick.

Fact: Moss loves Tom Brady.

Fact: Moss in New England hurts the Dolphins.

Fact glowing in neon and screaming look at me!: Randy Moss is elite. Adding him is an opportunity for the Dolphins to boost their lagging offense with a super-charged talent and do it relatively risk free because it is basically a rental for the last two months of the season. If it works out, great. If it doesn't, he goes down the road to free agency and the Dolphins go their way toward the offseason none the worse for wear.

So it makes sense that Miami would consider not only improving their pass offense, but also blocking a dangerous reunion of Moss in New England.

But there is a down side. Isn't there always?

Moss hasn't exactly been stellar in spots where the QB isn't stellar. He proved that in Oakland and even during his recent stint in Minnesota. Moss also is known as a player that mopes and perhaps even loafs when he's not happy or engaged or a major part of the game plan. Adding Moss would have an enormous impact on team chemistry and whether that impact would be positive or negative, no one can predict with a 100 percent degree of certainty.

Luckily, that's not our problem. Jeff Ireland makes tons of money to figure this stuff out. You guys know how I feel about him -- he's a rising star. It is good he is doing his due diligence. I would be terribly disappointed if I found out a major, major talent (warts and all) is about to come available and the Dolphins are dismissing it out of hand. So it is good Miami is initially interested.

But whatever Ireland does, I believe, will ultimately be the right call. It's time for him to pull the trigger if he feels the need to do so or run away from the situation if he feels it ultimately isn't a fit.

Once upon a time the Dolphins might have had an opportunity to draft Randy Moss and Jimmy Johnson ran away from the situation. He did so unapologetically and knowing he could have drafted Moss if he wanted. Wouldn't it be ironic if, after all these years, Moss ends up in Miami ... at least for a couple of months?

Makes me smile.

[Note: I will be discussing the Moss possibility and giving you more facts (as they come in) during my morning radio show, Armando and the Amigo, on 640 Sports. If you're not in So. Fla., you can listen to the streaming broadcast here. Mike Florio will be on the show today as will Qadry Ismail and Tim Graham of ESPN.com]

If it happens, GREAT, if it doesnt, GREAT!!!!

even if moss were to come in and just run down the field every pass play an not try 100% he would still draw attention off marshall and bess.

Tony?!? is that you as crocodile? a lot of words without really saying anything at all.

Armando, you forgot about the connection Moss has with Pennington from their days at Marshall. It could be an important factor, even though I am not quite sure he would be good for the team. In my opinion, we have the talent to win. We have 2 good WR in Bess and Marshall. The one thing missing is pure speed, especially at the RB position. A RB to hit the corner and pick up "chunk" yards. True their QB was Tom Brady, but the Patriots have won Super Bowls with no-name WRs. I really hate jumping on the band wagon, but Henning is not helping this offense. Lets get the ball downfield a bit, let Bess and Marshall run after the catch. Our WRs our perfectly fine. One last thing, we should have kept David Martin who was good at running the seam route. We miss him.

Time to wake up everyone.
I'm going to bed.

In that Vikes/ Pats game, he did not even give an ounce of effort. That might because of the situation with Childress. I would still give the guy a chance with Sparano having a pretty good grasp on this team and all. It is a low risk, high reward situation of getting a player of his caliber with out surrendering a draft pick. For that reason I feel another team will pick him up before we do, unfortunately.

after much thought I am not sure i wojld lije Randy to join the Dolphins.

there have been many great players through sports history that were the best at their respective positions but could never reach the ultimate goal of a championship.

Randy Moss may be one of those players.

He has had an excellent career and really took off with Brady but how many SB did he help them win? Zero.

He could really help us stretch the field yes but is he really a good fit, honestly?

Randy will go down as one of the best at his position but a champion he may never be.

hey coach!!!!
hey jeff ierland!!!
we need a QB who can get brandon the ball in the enzone, and he's a pro bowl wide out.new england has no pro bowl wideouts,in fact they traded there's for a draft pick ,GOOD MOVE AGAIN. The last time i looked new england is still winning BIG games, and hell there rebuilding this year. wait till next year when they have a ton of draft choices. hey Jeff Ireland!!!! you know they will trade some of those pick in 2011 for more in 2012. lets get to work Mr Ireland, let's get the phins a pro bowl front office, WE NEED ONE. this is BIG TIME FOOTBALL AND THE BAR IS SET HIGH. we can't keep settling for second behind new england.
ed the fan

Can Henning go ASAP?
The Wildcat plays almost cost us the Game?????

The Chiefs are behind us at 5-2 for the record. However, I get your point about other teams being in front of us.

Pennington as QB with Marshall and Moss, that's the solution!
Cut Henne!

Haha, crocodile, you grew up!

I hope you are right Armando, about Ireland. Maybe that ugly Dez Bryant episode was immaturity on his part(and picking Pat White). Hmm..

Getting Moss will just confuse Henning and his robotic puppet Henne even more. Henning won't know how to use him and Henne will just get sacked by the time he decides to throw. On the other hand, lets get Moss, he'll expose Henning, Sparano, and Henne until they run out of town.

Don't forget Moss called Penny the best quarterback he has ever played for -- H-town connection.

moss is a downfield threat. we dont throw the ball downfield;we run a dink and dunk offense with emphasis on no mistakes. it doesnt matter how many great receivers we accumulate. who's gonna throw the ball to them? our offensive philosophy would have to completely change.

If we win he'll be happy; and it looks like we are doing so.

H's a locker room CANCER

Why would you want a guy on your team that does not play hard all the time, we need to play better on offense but we don't need him, it is starting to look like a scam trade moss away and get him back and a draft pick, I would not want him on our team even if he was free

I'd love to hear who these "NFL sources" are. I would be willing to bet none of them draw a paycheck from the Miami Dolphins, and therefore, are only second hand when it comes to talking about what the team's plans are.

Also, why does it make you smile that JJ didn't draft Moss and he may be on the team? Because Jimmy made a mistake during a draft? You, of all people, should understand that mistakes are gonna happen. I mean, look at this typo-riddled blog. Another sad commentary on the state of journalism. Here's what Mando's copy looks like before a talented copy editor rewrites his "work."

Another boring, pointless, unsourced and speculative post that adds nothing (certainly not news from the major metropolitan paper covering the Dolphins! Perish the thought!). Keep up the great work! I can't wait to listen to your non-news now, too!

-- Bebo

It's good for a wet dream and all, but dude ain't gonna make it past all those owners ahead of us.

And Henne is already confused enough having ONE All-Pro wideout to throw to. A second just may short-circuit his processors......

Why build,to have it tore down by one person! You get him and lose to N.E.and he will be telling all that will listen how he loves the Pats and their coaching staff. Think, traded by Minny,Oakland,New England, and cut by Minny. WHY?

Dear Mr. Salguero

Do you know if Randy Moss's mother worked for his Father and in what capacity ?

If so then please pass that information to Jeff Ireland.

We mite actually land Randy Moss.

Soiled :)

Haha!, Hurri'

no Moss. Receivers aren't the problem, rb's are. Ronnie is looking like a rb who is one year off a season ending surgery. he is a little slow and isn't very strong. He'll be better next year. This season it should be Ricky left, Ricky right until we draft a rb this year.

very suprised mando calling ireland a rising star. he hasnt earned that title;not even close. jury still out;ireland hasnt proven anything.

Any team that goes after Moss is wsting their time and money unless Moss wants to be there. Moss said he was happy to be back in Purple, but it's clear that he didn't really mean it. He found a way to get cut after only 4 weeks. Claim Moss and you get nothing that he doesn't want to give you. His motivation at this stage in his career is probably to get a ring. It seems obvious that any team that does not have immediate and serious Super Bowl expectations should simply pass on Moss. Why is Moss blowing kisses at New England after they dumped him for a 3rd rond pick? Because he knows they are real contenders and his single best shot at that elusive ring.

Mando he does have one tie to Miami besides his home and being a heat fan...his old college qb from Marshall.

To not try your hardest to get Moss on your team would be a huge mistake! Do the Dolphins want to win the division, make the playoffs, and win a championship? They don't have the offensive weapons yet to do so. They need Moss. Hartline can sit the bench for a year for all I care. Get Moss.

hey Jeff Ireland !!!
devion branch -- louisville
julian edelman --kent st
taylor price-- ohio u.
matt slate --ucla
brandon tate --n. caroline
wes welker --texas tech(this one hurts)
who are these guys????? THE FIRST PLACE new england Pat's wide outs. That's right,How can These guys be winning big games?????
hey Mr Ireland!!!! we have got a lot of work to do,or we will always be second place to the PAT's
our scouts have got to do a better job. the FRONT OFFICE has got to do a better job.our coaches have to do a better job.NEW ENGLAND IS THE STANDARD --- PNIN UP---

Well "IF" for some strange reason the stars aligned and Moss does indeed come here. The Dolphins should sit the "kid" and start Chad P.
"LETS GET THIS THANG GOING" for a Pennigton, Moss and(FROM)Marshall Superbowl run.

Fire Henning, bench henne, play Pennintong put Marshall ,Bess and Moss and hey who the hell are gona cover those WRs common man be better team for once.

See, the National Media underestimates the Fans in Miami. Apparently, they don't see(or don't want to see) that we , here, have a long football tradition with HOF coaches and players enlightening us. We are very literate.

Very true, euphy, hadn't thought of that. Miami might not be his choice.

Sign Moss , Fire Henning!
the truth is... were just gonna have to wait and see what happens.
everyone finding out latest info plz say it as the day goes by so us who are atwork can know asap!
thx. Go Fins!!!

Food was brought into the Minny locker room last Friday and Moss stood up and told every one that he would not feed that garbage to his dog! He refused to fly from Boston to Minny with the team after the game. Told the Minny coaching staff that they should follow the lead of the N.E. coached and learn how to coach. You guys want this CANCER on in Miami, good luck!

hey jeff ierland!!!!
what does the new england pat's front office know that we don't. brian hoyer is the back up QB to tom brady?? UNDRAFTED 2009 brian hoyer out of michigan state??? so if tom terrific goes down for the pat's, the keys to the pat's offence goes to UNDRAFTED brian hoyer out of not michigan, but michigan state!!!!
ed the fan

Well, if the Truth is CANCER, then welcome.

can ayone explain how this waiver thing works again..

i understand the part of the worst team has the first option and vice versa

for instance if the Bills want Moss does that mean Moss is forced to play with the bills?

does he have a say in it?

Buffalo wont pick up Moss,we have enough problems. Let Dallas have him, this way Jerry can tell the press that he is the missing link and they will win the Super Bowl next year.

The Dolphins should do everything possible to get Randy Moss.Imagine the possibilities. How would opposing defenses cover Marshall and Moss? For once Miami, pull the trigger, get him,and our playoff chances skyrocket!Just my opinion,I am sure other Phin fans will disagree.Go Dolphins!

Don't want him - plain and simple. I'd rather have one Davonne Bess going 100% on every play than 2 Randy Moss going going 50% on every other play. If you've enjoyed reading this post half as much as I have in writing it, then I have enjoyed it twice as much. Think about it man. Thats deep stuff.....

After further thought, I think the Dolphins will pass on Moss (if I were GM, I'd probably grab him, but that's me). The reason Ireland will pass is because:

A- He doesn't feel we're a true Playoff team so why get Moss to go 8-8, 9-7 or 10-6 and risk him messing up the "chemistry" of the team

B- Ireland spoke before about not letting a younger player mature and learn their position. That's what would happen if Moss was signed, because he'd obviously be taking Hartline's spot. So, again, is it worth it for 2 months (since there's almost no way Moss would stay longer than that).

C- Sparano talks about the "right" 53 players, not always the best. So I think Sparano would say the risk isn't worth the reward, and since they already have possible "problems" like Crowder and Marshall, why risk another one?

D- Ireland may be seeing what Sparano/Henning's offensive mentality is, and realizing Moss would make it harder to be what they want, which is a run-first, "in-the-trenches" type of smashmouth team (which we are not really anymore).

Cancerous acorn

its amazing to think of
what this dolphin team, and chad henne, could be with moss. he is an elite wr, and he would only make bess and hartline better. we would have our deep threat.

I could go either way on this one. I only want him here if he wants to be here. If we go to New England on the final week of the year with Moss and he wears the Sox cap (Sox SUCK!) and proceeds to suck the Patriots' Johnsons again (thanks DC) then I might put my foot through the tv.

ouch, calking for henne to be benched, sad day for puerto ricans with that craziness.

That guy, here's why me as GM would go after Moss:

- Moss going 50% still got him 2 TDs in 3 games (while Brandon Marshall had ZERO).

- Moss would stretch the defense and limit the double-teaming of Marshall (pick your poison).

- Let's say the defense double-teams Marshall AND Moss, well then, now our boy Davone Bess will have a straight shot to the endzone on almost every play they do that.

- Moss would cost hardly anything and could be traded or gotten rid of at the end of the season.

- Acquiring Moss would show the Dolphins coaches, players and fans that the GM/Ownership wants to win NOW (not next year, not at a later date, RIGHT NOW).

- If Bess, Hartline, the 2 rookies can't learn from Marshall and Moss about how to play WR, they're worthless and should be put out of their misery.

- Moss would force Henning's hand. Since Sparano won't overrule him, the GM will be saying by this signing that we're a PASS-FIRST offense, we need to open things up, and Henning you don't have a say, we're giving you this player, now USE HIM!

PLEASE do not sign Randy Moss. The guy thrives in one scenario: When he has a stellar QB who can take a 5 step drop and bomb it 50 yards down field, and who isn't afraid to look off receivers and make a difficult throw. Chad Henne is NOT that kind of QB. Look at Moss's career:

Minnesota: QB Culpepper, who put up crazy numbers when he was healthy. Moss makes a name for himself

Oakland: Kerry Collins has a less than stellar year, and Moss does the same

New England: We all know what happens here

Minnesota: Favre struggles, so does moss.

I know that it's clear that the play of a wide out depends heavily upon his quarterbacks ability, but the offense schemes the dolphins use are not the kinds of plays that rely on one player to be the center of attention on every snap (thanks to Wannstedt and his abuse of ricky in his first few years for the fins, they'll never purely focus on one guy) The love to mix it up, and if Randy isn't THE guy, he isn't happy. Wins and team success does not matter to him, which is obvious by his departure from the Pats, who are the bets team in the NFL right now.

I appreciate the drive to make this club better, and I think jeff ireland has the right idea, but adding moss will just add a cancer to the locker room, and prevent brandon from reaching his full potential in this offense, prevent davone from developing the way he has, keep hartline off the field in pressure situations (in which he has proven to be stellar) and may set a bad example for young receivers like Roberto Wallace and Marlon Moore.

Moss wants to play in N.E. period.. judging where the Dolphins stand if the playoffs are to be a reality i would think that last game in N.E would be huge for the Phins. imagine Moss as a Dolphin throwing roses to Belicheat and the Pats playing 50 % of the time... as Mia's season is on the line. no thanks..as tempting is seems and feels, thats what the devil will do to you, tempt u too no end, making u possibly sell your soul.

Armandouche, isnt Chad Pennington a "connection" to Moss? You make it sound as though he would have an enormous problem going to Miami. Douche

I would recommend we get Moss for the remaining 8 games and sit Hartline...Problem is Moss wants to be back in NE.
Did you see the hug he gave Brady after the game? Thought he was going to start dry humping his leg!
The probability of Moss ending up in Miami is the same as the Dems holding onto the House in Congress....ZERO.

I'd love to have Moss but I don't see him getting past Denver. Knows the coach and knows the system.

here is the question you should be asking why whould moss want to come play wiht us besides the fact he has brandon on the other side??

hes goin to look at brandons numbers and think is that what i want for me??

the pats just wiped the floor with us and he was a witness to it

i can think of more reasons why he wouldnt come here then why he would

our qb is questionable even though i think it bring back the deep threat

and our qb is questionable i personally think because of the coaching

good coaches develope mediocre talent to be really good

thats why you have to give teams like indy and "Tamme" who?

pats as much as i hate them i respect them for what they can do with players like wes welker
he was a good player here but the rest is history

randy moss wouldnt come here beacuse its not a secret that our coaching staff isnt exactly working to potential

he wants to hear "randy we are goin to get you the ball as manytimes possible in a game" which he is what minnesota told him and lied

Our offense and QB are way too conservative for Moss. We are still a "go to the locker room with 10 secs left in the half and the ball on our 45" type of team... I have talked with hundreds of fans.. all agree this is simply gutless. I like Henne but to me he never looks loose.. wont try to thread the needle.. because he's scared of getting in trouble.. bc he made a "bad decision".. no we should have landed vincent jackson. or get some strong run blockers.

I don't think Moss and Brady won a SB did they?
I can't believe how much you Dolphin fans have a crush on Tom Brady.Do you have posters of him in your bedrooms as well?

very worried that it'd put Brandon Marshall into a sulk

LOL. Bunch of retarded arm chairs GMs. First you have a jackass named Bebo WHO SIGNS HIS POSTS "--Bebo." Anyone who signs their posts on a blog or forum is instantly disqualified for being a pompous, retarded stroke victim. Nobody with one iota of intelligence or self-awareness does that. Second, where are all the mooks complaining about Sparano's fist-pumping? Know what's lamer than his fist-pumping after a field goal? COMPLAINING ABOUT AN NFL HEAD COACH FIST PUMPING...ON A BLOG...PROBABLY ON YOUR PHONE WHILE YOU TEND TO THE FRY STATION. I'm sure Tony is just devastated that you guys don't like him being enthusiastic, even overly so, because he has a job that he likes and isn't in the service industry. Seriously...you guys all know SO MUCH MORE THAN ANYBODY ELSE. THAT'S WHY YOU ARE, YA KNOW, BLOG COMMENTATORS!!! Actually, BLOG POSTERS ARE BLOG POSTERS BECAUSE THEY HAVE NO OTHER QUALIFICATIONS OR WORTH TO THE HUMAN RACE. So keep on living in your personal fantasy worlds, ladies. Well, I will say that Blog Posters are more qualified than Henning to call plays, but that ain't really saying much. I bet Jeff Ireland, is thinking "I better check and see what that nobody Bebo thinks I should do. Maybe I'll ask him when he delivers my pizza."

Dude...Brady is a HOF player and the best QB of our era along with Manning...and yes I do rub on out to his poster on my wall!
