Dolphins pass on Randy Moss, make no changes

It was interesting while it lasted but 4 p.m. came and went and the Dolphins decided against putting in a claim for wide receiver Randy Moss.

Interestingly, the club did put in a claim for outside linebacker Shawne Merriman.

The bottom line?

The Dolphins got neither.

The Dolphins could have had Moss if they wanted. He was available when their turn came up at No. 18 because no other team ahead of them had claimed the enigmatic wide receiver. But Miami passed also and he lands with the Tennessee Titans, who had the No. 22 slot on the waiver claim priority list.

The Dolphins had a claim in for Merriman, but didn't get him because the Buffalo Bills scooped him up with their No. 1 slot on the waiver claim priority list. It wasn't even close for Miami to get him.

What is interesting is that the Dolphins obviously decided Merriman could help them but Moss really would not. Interesting because the Miami offense seems to require more work than the defensive right now and so it could use more help.

The Dolphins will see Randy Moss for the second time this season on Nov. 14. This, by the way, marks the second time in club history the Dolphins had a good, easy opportunity to pick up Randy Moss and decided against it -- the first time being when he was drafted out of Marshall.

CELTIC, VERY GOOD AND THOUGHTFUL POST.

Can't believe they passed on Moss but then again the same that passed on Drew Brees and look what he has done "oh yeah" he has a Super Bowl ring! Can you please get someone there that knows what they are doing! Moss for next to nothing, that would not of helped? With him and Marshall would have been like the Clayton and Duper days.

I go get a beer and I miss all of the good comments...

I couldn't have stated it any better Facepalm, the nexxus of the dolphins problems eminate from the philosophy being espoused from the top... No risk = No reward ...

Celtic, you are absolutely correct, Belicheck is laughing his tail off right now at our ineptness...

He doesn't have to steal signals when he plays Miami, because he already knows the plays before we call them...

Noah..

Belechick just sent Moss packing... ???

If he is laughing... its at what Tennessee is going to have to deal with....

You sound like a petulant child with your whining.....

Fist pump time

We picked up nate ness so he can shine in st
With Dan the man carpenter and solid d, the fist pumpers can take us deep into the playoffs.

Derek ,

Find another jerk to speak to .

Derek, you are kidding yourself if you think the decision to release Moss was based solely on his play on the field, or his interactions in the locker room, or for that matter his choice of local cuisine...

It was a business decision that was made by Belechik. It was about money, a future contract commitment, and an opportunity to obtain a third round draft pick...

Belechik loves garnering draft picks, because he has a keen eye for talent. And, he knows how to develop the players he brings in...

Something the coaching staff of Miami can only wish they possesed...

He could have easily dealt with Moss for the remainder of the season had he chosen to do so...

im not too scared about merriman, but moss WHAAAA!!!!!!!!

sorry i mean WHAAA?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

I CAN'T BELIEVE IT WE DIDN'T EVEN GO GET HIM A PLAYMAKER THAT THE DOLPHINS SO BADLY NEEDED WHEN IN BILL COWHER COMING PLEASE GET RID OF THIS CURRENT REGIME!!!!!!!

Wake me up when we score on a fifty yd play

Bottom line...he would have made our O better, more of a headache for opposing teams, opened the field up for BM, Bess, Ricky, and Ronnie. So for you to call anyone that wanted moss stupid, childish, and whatever else..well we think you are dumb for not wanting him! There is a reason Chris Johnson wanted moss on his team, Maeshall did too...and yet you still dont see how he could have helped us? You naysayers aee the dummies...yeah 22 teams passed on him, bellacheat didnt need his services anymore..not surprising just look at their loades roster and thousand draft picks they have next year, and all the bad that comes with moss...well you take the good with the bad..i want playoffs, SB ring, and all that now...aint gonna happen now. Pathetic that our FO lacks the balls to do this on the cheap...and we dont have the luxury of NE and all the draft picks and such...
So what r u moss haters gonna say when ge torches us in two weeks in our house..will you believe then?

WHO SAYS THAT THIS FRONT OFFICE KNOWS WHAT THEY ARE DOING U MEAN THE SAME FRONT OFFICE THAT PASSED ON DESEAN JACKSON 2 YEARS AGO AND MACLIN LAST YEAR THE SAME FRONT OFFICE THAT PASSED ON DEZ BRYANT THIS YEAR THESE ARE ALL SPEED WR PLAYMAKERS THAT MAKE A DIFFERENCE AND FOR WHAT TO DRAFT PAT WHITE AND ODRICK HOW MANY GAMES HAVE THEY PLAYED I BELIEVE WE HAD A CHANCE ON KENNY BRITT AND HACKEEM NICKS WHO DID WE DRAFT AHEAD OF THESE GUYS THAT WERE WORTH IT SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME ITS FREAKING RIDICULOUS I AM GETTING TIRED OF SEEING OTHER TEAMS DRAFTING PLAYMAKERS OUR BEST PLAYMAKERS ON OFFENSE AND DEFENSE IS MARSHALL AND DANSBY A FREE AGENT AND A TRADE WHAT PLAYMAKERS HAVE THE DOLPHINS DRAFTED IN THE LAST FEW YEARS HELL WE HAD A CHANCE AT AARON HERNANDEZ A GOOD PLAYMAKING TIGHT END AND BLEW THAT ONE AS WELL WHEN WILL WE FIND OUT MIKE WALLACE OR VINCENT JACKSON WE HAD A CHANCE AT PERCY HARVIN AS WELL AND PASSED ITS A JOKE

Who's more clueless?
Whipple or Henning

So call me and the others whatever you want, you hayers are the minority on this subject, bill and others...i dont care what names you call people...just wait and see what happens in the next few weeks. i hate saying anything about my team loosing, but man we arent going to the playoffs now. No sugar coating, no BS, we arent getting there now. you can try to explain why you think our O is so explosive now..please enlighten me..please do it because we swung amd missed...actially jeff and tony didnt even show up for the game to even take a swing.

LeBron...both, i believe they are tied

to pass on MOSS is dumb as passing on Beers .

LeBron...a fifty yard play, hahahahahahahah, thats good one man, you will be sleeping for a loooong while bro

ALoco, you speak the truth man

Noah...

First of all... You seem like a perfectly legitimate Jerk to speak to... I am to busy at the moment to find another besides you...

Second...
You are acting as if this situation was something Miami has been siting around Mulling for weeks like they did with the Marshall deal. In the big picture... Moss becoming available was a Fluke.
In my 45 years of life...RARELY have I seen a knee jerk reaction or acquisition of ANY player work out very well (See Childress and his 4 weeks with your Hero)...
I NEVER thought Moss would end up in Miami, check my posts, I said all along that him coming here was very unlikely. When I first heard he was available, I thought it would be great... Then I did what our Management did... I thought it through past the whole "Yahoo!!!" aspect of the deal, looked at the fact and the baggage... and changed my mind. It is something grown up, self controlled adults learn to do as their life moves on... and something Young, stupid, Bang your head until you figure it out (like I once was)don't get their mind around for some time... They just call people they do not know names and think it makes them look smart..

I NEVER THOUGHT MOSS WOULD COME HERE... You did based on your overreaction to the decision.... Who, Noah... Is the one kidding themselves????

cow, we could have him for few month ,he's way better than the 50 million dollars man who has one lousy TD SINCE HE LANDED IN MIAMI AND MOSS HAD 2 TD W/MIN IN TWO WEEKS .HE COULD HAVE A BIG PLUS .

Bill, you must be drinking from ireland sparano's tainted juice cups if you are calling moss garbage..he is one of the best WR the game has ever had and thats a fact. So tell all of us here your obviously higher knowledge and superior thinking on why a future hall of fame WR would fit our team and make it better today..not two years from now, but today. ive got to hear this one...

Derek,

You rude and not nice .

It was a business decision that was made by Belechik. It was about money, a future contract commitment, and an opportunity to obtain a third round draft pick...

-He could have easily dealt with Moss for the remainder of the season had he chosen to do so...

Noah,

With all due respect, you just made Dereks argument for him.

It was a business decision and Belicheat decided Moss's diminishing talents weren't worth the accompanying troubles.

Why would he laugh at us for feeling the same way he does about Moss?

Dereks right, if he's laughing at anyone, it's the Titans.

Exactly Loco, would have added TD's to many of our players this year, and maybe...just maybe we could score in the red zone...or even better a long pass for a TD....man i forgot the last time we had a deep score more than once or twice per year

Get used to it... Life is not full of people who agree with you Noah... You are welcome to feel and say what you will... but your going to learn some just may think your wrong and call you out on it...

I really am sorry if I hurt your feelings...

But we are bantering a subject that is no longer a viable issue.....

I am going to pull for my team and back their calls... You don't want to do that?
Fine with me... But don't be surprised if you find another who calls you on your statements.

Have a good one Noah... I wish you all the best. But there are way too many games left for me to talk like a quitter...

Dolphins made a huge mistake. Moss would put the Dolphins atop the division. Now we will finish 2nd or 3rd if we get lucky. Slim chance at playoffs unless we beat Titans and Ravens.

We shall see whos laughing in two weeks...i just have a strange feeling about this one...And ill bet anyone a hondo that Tenn will not be laughing, they will be loving their new WR, and CJ will be getting a ton more yards this year now...just sucks we will be a part of that. So why would BM amd Johnson and many other players want to play with him?? Answer me that please...

Chris...thats just the raw honest truth you just stated man...

Just sayin. yall (bob12 odin) had beef with me when i didnt want Moss drama here. like i said rather earn it with what we got on the field. Just Sayin...

Marshall may be on pace for another 100 catch season but will fall far short. After watching tape from the Cincy game nfl DC's will discover they can even "triple-team" Marshall without major consequence.

Even if by miracle we do make the playoffs its almost certain one and done.

Lebron's going to have to change his name to Rip Vanwinkle!

Nighty Night!

Look, we all want the same end result here, we want our team to be better and win, playoffs and all...we just have different ideas on how to get there...some ideas are way faster than others. Nothing we can do now except unite and conquor...with FG's lol

Passing on the 8 game rental of Moss is like this organization saying they are fine with another one and done playoff appearance bridging into the offseason. As it now stands we will struggle to get in as a wildcard.

Titans may have just gained the upperhand in the wildcard battle that could ultimately come down to us or them. If it does happen this way everyone will reflect back to this moment.

Breed, thats the truth man

At this rate, Carpenter will be mayor of miami when he retires...
In his hayday Mayor Carpenter kicked 681 FG's in one season! What a man, we will now name miami's stadium to...Carpenter Field...The House That His Foot Built..

wow that was a close one im glad we did nkt get moss

Hey balls on palmface,

Your a clown and clearly mental. How about you go find some rich guy to tea bag, teabagger.

Sound as if you'd fit in real nice in Nazi Germany.

As far as Moss, that ship has sailed. All we can do is hope for the best. I'm looking for a transition game Sunday. Henning opens the playbook. Henne passes for 300+ and 2 TD's. Ronnie scores and the Dolphins win 30-14.
Now a more realistic 15-14 ulcer game with many fist pumps is more likly.
Go Dolphins!

This regime reminds me of self-righteous blowhards by day and dumpster diving alley cats by night.

We are filtering thru everyone's garbage by night. Then become self-righteously filled with pride and morality by day. It wouldnt have hurt anything at all to use Moss as a 8 game rental.

The only chance of significantly improving our offense and we whiffed on a 8 game rental!

Guys, a real football braintrust would have seen before the season began we needed a deep passing threat to go with Marshall. This regime is bound and determined to prove all it takes is 3 yards and a cloud of dust to win a championship.

Even in the 3 yards and a cloud of dust days of our early 70's offense we had Mercury Morris and Paul Warfield. When will the idiots in charge wake up!

Everyone who's glad we didnt get Moss should be even happier DC's will clamp down even more after watching Cincy "triple-team" Marshall at times without consequence.

From here on in dont be too surprised to see even the field goals getting harder too come by. Remember you said no to Marshall, just like ignorance of the law is no excuse.

They arent going to wake up unfortunately, it will take many many many more FG's before that happens. were stuck in the middle of the nfl pack again... Remember all of those yeats in a row we picked right around 20th in the draft..seems like more of them ahead

Killa,

I'm kinda twisted on the subject of Moss.

From a talent standpoint, I agree with you. Moss, TALENTWISE is EXACTLY what Henne, Marshall and Bess need.

Other than that and based on Moss's off field exploits, the guy is a piece of worthless shyt. He's WORSE than a poor excuse of a human being. I don't wish ill will upon many, but that guy almost makes me sin in my heart. I ALMOST HATE the guy.

The big conundrum: He would OBVIOUSLY help our team in the short term. Undoubtedly hurt us in the long run.

As far as everybody else whinning about who we didn't draft. You make some good 20/20 hindsight points, but who the heck couldn't, after the fact.

If any of you remember, up until recently, our defense was a seive since the 1-15 season. Yeah, them idiots used up all our draft picks on defense. A defense that now ranks 8th overall in the NFL.

Get the new miami T-shirts ready..on the back it will say..."Its up..and it's good!" The front will have a pic of Carpenter as a high school boy...

Jimmy Jam.....talk to me on Sunday....

Okay. You're on. If the Fins win by your predicted score... heck if the fins win at all... you can take me to task. I will gladly be a whipping boy if Miami wins. Unlike the coaches and the front office, I'd love it if this team could score more than one offensive TD a game.

9-7 at best, 7-9 at worst. Pedestrian, boring, unimproved (despite obvious improvement in personnel - especially defensively as the only improvement offensively was Marshall - so it MUST be a coaching issue).

2011 (if there is a season): Keep Nolan, bring in Chuckie or Brian Schottenheimer. I have no idea if they should keep Ireland. I'd say no but who should replace him?

NO MORE FIELD GOALS! Live and die for TDs.

Hey Odin, yes i have said many
times that i really am not a big moss fan at all...i just knew he would help other aspects of our team for really cheap this year. Also consider what we will be dealing with at the seasons end..more cohesive teams like the stinkin jets and NE, and all the others...teams with a ton of talent always take a bit to get going..but when they do its hard to stop them...i just wanted us to be beefed up when we really need here in a few weeks.

This organization has once again made a poor decison that will bite us in the ass when we meet the Titans. Jeff "Leprechaun" Ireland needs to be more like Pat Riley. How do you pass on Randy Moss?

I am so sick of regime after stupid regime since the end of Shula's reign passing on players that could significantly help this team. Then blow false championship hopes up our pipes. For me this isnt just about Randy Moss,we seem to always have a legit reason for passing on premium talent whether thru draft, free agency, or in this case wiaver wire of all things.

How often will you find a player at any position of Moss' calibre on waiver wire of all places? Hasnt the last 5 regimes always had a legit reason for passing on legit talent and still we've struggled?

Hasnt 3 or 4 one and done playoff appearances in the last 13yrs taught us anything as fans?

The longer Hartline proves he isnt a deep threat at the #2 wr. The more the safeties will start creeping up to suffocate the run game even more. Which also means less operating room for the intermediate passing game.

Guys as this continues to happen no longer will we have to worry about td's or "field goals." We will began to struggle to score period. Even if Moss only caught1-2 deep passes the entire final 8 games with us. He would have made the safeties back off by reputation alone.

Guys, we could have picked up a deep threat #2 wr via free agency or draft during the offseason. But that does absolutely nothing for our hopes in the right now!

I believe the Ravens game will become our first true taste of beginning to see the field steadily shrink for our offense. In this situation I dont see our offense scoring more than 13pts max.

Hopefully our defense can hold thier offense to 9pts or less. Because we dont convert 1 of our 3 scoring drives to a td, all we'll score is 9pts and duke it out for the win in overtime.

Is it possible for someone to create a login ID, that is the same as mine?

Because someone is creating posts under NoahB, and it isn't me...

Anyway, that being said, Derek I never called you a Jerk... I don't find the need to debase or denegrade others to make myself feel better, or more knowledgeable...

I enjoy a stimulating and intellectual debate, as such why would I need to use profanities to illustrate a point. I apologize, that you believed it to be me, but let me assure you it wasn't...I think if you look at my previous posts, you can see that...

And to the cowardly imposter that is pretending to be me... Get a clue, get a life, get a job, or better yet... get out of here...

Guys we have a good not great defense. Therefore I dont see them helping us win very many games where we score 14pts or less.

Its even more nightmarish when you consider how Jeckyl and Hyde our st's are.

still stunned that we let a hof wr slip through our grasp

our dull as dishhwater offense will remain mired in mediocrity as Tenny makes a playoff run

we are painful to watch

Oregon Dolphin fan,

Wow! Name calling is the best insult you can come up with? Seriously? You're hopeless. No freaking wonder your birth certificate is an apology from the condom factory. You're the epitome of what parents call "Our little mistake". Just give up now, you're not going to win this.

In terms of me quitting on the Dolphins, Never... I am a true fan. As such, I only want us to be competitive with the Patriots and Jets of the world... As a fan and ticket-holder, I have every right to question the commitment of the team. Is it more important to build a night club, or bring in Randy Moss?

Do you want to win now, or just create another entertainment venue here in South Florida? If I want that, I can go to South Beach...

I want to see an ownership group that is commited to winning, to taking risks, to not being afraid to make mistakes...

Randy Moss was a great opportunity for us...

Jimmy Jam,

Please say no to "Chucky." He'll jam the west coast offense down our throats and go thru 3-4 different qb's in the process. That's exactly what he did in Tampa before they eventually read the memo.

I say throw the kitchen sink at Cowher not Gruden.

Seer,

Wouldnt it be ironic we lose to Tenneeseee and they end up being the team to beat us out for a wildcard? Any dolfan with brains already knows we can forget about the division crown with this stuck in the mud offense.

NoahB,

The last 5 regimes that have been here have always had a good reason to pass on premium talent beit draft, free agency, or waiver wire. That's the exact same thinking thats gotten 3 or four one and done playoff appearances in the last 13yrs since Shula was forced out.

Mass or No Mass, Henning is the real problem and it ain't going to change anytime soon.

I do think we need a speed receiver to maximize Marshall's talents.

Still, the excuse that he's being double teamed is just a poor, lame.......well.......EXCUSE. It's unacceptable and Sporano has to see this, if you, I and every talking head on the planet sees it.

The problem is that Henning lets opposing defenses dictate what we do. You don't have to just take what the defense gives you. You have to figure out how to exploit the way they're playing Marshall. It's called crunch time strategy.

Marshall wide left. Fasano left side. Bess slot right and Hartline wide right. Ricky single back.

Marshall on a fly takes a corner and FS deep left side. Fasano runs a skinny post down the middle. He'll draw a LB or the SS. Bess runs a drag route underneath Fasano and draws a LB, nickle or SS. Hartline runs a fly. That puts everyone except Marshall in man to man coverage with somebody mismatched against a LB. A QB's dream.
Not only that, it leaves Ricky as the check down on a wheel to the right side with nobody home save the corner covering Hartline 40 yards down field.

This kind of talk gets Hennings blood pressure up to high. So instead, he just puts away the nitroglycerin pills, calls a maximun protection and sends only Marshall out on a route. WTF? We don't even challenge the defense, we just take what they give and that means everything underneath. The opposing DC's know this and preach, just keep everything in front of you and we'll be fine.

If we send five guys out and their doubling Marshall, they have to commit 6 to coverage. That leaves them 5 to rush against our 5. With our Offensive line I'll take that everytime.

If they blitz, it's even better. We catch them with their pants down and make them pay. It's called ballin!

This just ain't Hennings style or philosophy. So like I began this post, Moss or No Moss, it ain't going to make much difference until Hennings gone!

As far as the skills of one Randy Moss diminishing, just ask Revis Island about Randy's supposed "lost step"...

The man can still play ball. The man can still catch the ball. Would you honestly rather have Brian Hartline running a deep route, rather than Randy Moss? Who has a greater chance of making a game-changing play, Moss or Hartline?

And, we are not even talking about his impact on other player's ability to get open, just by his sheer presence on the field. Defenses have to respect Moss and his speed and play-making ability. Any Offensive Coordinator worth his salt would salivate at the opportunity to have Moss in their game plan...

The Dolphins blew it.. But, I still love them, and always will...
