Miami Dolphins defeat Raiders, 33-17

OAKLAND -- The haters will have to wait another day.

The Dolphins season, on the brink, survives today because the Miami got great efforts all around in this 33-17 victory over Oakland.

They got a great effort from Chad Henne, who threw for over 307 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.

They got a great effort from the wide receiver corps that didn't seem to notice Brandon Marshall was missing. Davone Bess had 111 yards receiving on six receptions. Rookie Marlon Moore caught a 57-yard touchdown pass.

They definitely got good work from the defense. Miami had three turnovers. And the Raiders running game was absent today because Miami erased it.

It was a solid victory. The Dolphins are 6-5.

Philip Rivers record breaking passing pace this season without VJax has actually lowered VJax's stock in San Diego. I cant see a scenario where they franchise him based on what we now see.

Vjax was RESTRICTED this season, not unrestricted (the reason no one else signed him being because they would have had to compensate the Chargers). He's screwed himself and it's the same situation this season.

No interest in Cowher, either, to be honest.

He's better than Gruden but when you remind people slobbering about him that it took him FOURTEEN YEARS as Steelers coach to win it all they tend to start shuffling their feet and hedge their comments about how "wonderful" he is.

I guess that part was conveniently forgotten in their rush to believe in magical coaches with pixie dust.

Honestly, unless Jeff Fisher somehow becomes available (which would be astoundingly dumb on the Titans part) I have absolutely ZERO interest in seeing a change at HC.

Eh.....rather next season.

Darrin you forget that Gruden built those Raider teams in the late 90's early part of 2000. That said we do not have the personel right now of a Gruden style offense. I would think the FO would take that into account before thinking about this. Also Sparano is like our young team, Up and down. Lets give him another year at least before we draw judgement on him. One thing going that may not favor Sparano would be if we ended up losing the rest of our games, and then there was a lockout. No way would we sit on a coach coming off a 6-10 season through a lockout into year 2012. That would be the only scenario in which I could justify the Phins sacking Sparano.

missed the game, had to work. Where did that offensive explosion come from!?

Darryl---Under that scenario, I'd agree, but it's unlikely.

Last thing in the world I'd want to see Miami do is to start behaving like the Redskins and just blow everything up every few years (along with spending outrageously in free-agency which fans LOVE but is almost always idiotic long-term).

What the Dolphins need to do is to study the Pats and Steelers and see the benefits of having offseasons that are stable to the point of boredom---with only the most necessary moves made.

It's not the flashy and sexy mode that fans like but it happens to be what works best.

It's OK to talk about the playoffs. For all intents and purposes our playoffs have already began.

Technically, we can win out and still miss. So you might as well look at this as your playoffs.

We lose one game and that's it!

Aloco, where are u from?

I was out of town, but fortunately I was able to listen with this iphone app I have to the local broadcast. I had to kind of imagine what was happening, but now I just saw highlights, and by far my favorite moment in the past 10 years of dolphins football was the super haddooooooooken!-like super duper fist pump that sporano gave after the ricky williams touchdown. HA!

if you want to know what I'm talking about watch the highlights at nfl.com/videos It is soo worth it-- it's at the end

A good all around gaME. lOVED everyone doin their part. Bess = beast, hartline better and better each week, and the kid is fearless. I also agree w one of the posts above that The coaching staff needs to find a way to let Thig get a few of those wildcat reps. Only good things can come from that.

I saw it. Awsome!

I heard he's on the injury list as questionable for next weeks game.

I posted a few pics in the picture section on the iphone app or tye super fist pump

Well, come along! Come along, you ninny! It's all your fault, you tin-plated fool. We missed a golden opportunity to leave this miserable planet!

Dolphins Make Playoffs if:

1. Win all remaining games for 11-5 record.

2. Jets or Pats finish 1-4 or 2-3 with us winning head to head point differential. Neither of these scenarios seem very likely.

So More Realistically Maybe:

1. Steerler or Raven(8-3) goes 2-3 over the final 5 games.

2. Colts win division and Jaguars lose at least one game. Chiefs win division and Chargers lose one game.

Dolphins would still be mathmatically in the picture if we lose only one of our remaining games but it would be nearly impossible to win any of the tiebreakers. We have to go 5-0 over the remaining 5 games to have any real hopes of a playoff wildcard.

Dying Breed is giving us hypothetical playoff scenarios!

How could you not like this guy?

FIST PuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuMP!!!!

So our most realistic hopes of making the playoffs is first having either Ravens or Steeler go 2-3 over the last 5 games. Then have the Jags or Chargers lose one game while Indy and KC clinch thoe divisions.

Chiefs lead afc west with a 7-4 record right now.

the players gave it there best i am proud!! Henne had a great game....but the fact of the matter is Henne inconsistency here and while at Michigan he needs to grow out of it fast or this coaching staff is starting to loose patient with him, thats why i say we need to hire a new coaching staff or they are going to ruin Henne career!! come on debate that with me real dolphins!!!

It does feel good to get a win. This was the type of team performance I was expecting before this season started. The Raiders are the Raiders, but it was sweet to dominate a team and think what could be. Odinseye is right, all of our games are "playoff" games from here in. We do have the most favorable schedule of teams we are chasing. I don't know if we are too far in the hole, but more perfomances like todays will give us some hope.

I just dont see us getting to the playoffs jus because we beat OAK amd everyone is happy tonight. i just dont see it...amd how do you propose we go 5-0 the rest of this year??

Guess what? If we made it as a wildcard playoff we would play the Jets for the right to move on to the next round of the playoffs.

How ironic it would be to beat the Jets in one of our final 5 games then turn around to beat them to advance to the 2nd rd of the playoffs.

Then face the same scenario with division foe New England to advance to afc championship game. This alone would have made all of the ups and downs of the 2010 season well worth the admission price. LOL!

I would argue that our best chance of making playoffs is the following:

Jets go 1-4

Their schedule...

@ NE - Loss
Home against Miami - Loss (If we don't win then rest doesn't matter)
@ Pitt - Loss
@ Chicago - Loss

Home w/ Buffalo - Win

I think thios scenario is absolutely possible. Your thoughts???

My stuff isnt as good as Dying's smoke tonight...pass that thing this way Mr Breed

I never said we would get to the playoffs. Just introduced the scenario neccessary to do it. LOL

I'm not sure Sporano is the problem. Did you read his lips after Chads red zone int?

Hennings ego would have him cut off his nose despite his face. He's not very quarterback friendly at this stage of the game. His playcalling makes him look jealous of his own quarterbacks sucess.

Keep Sporano!

Fire Henning!

Of course we would also have to do our part and win out....which as I said in my ealier post I think we can and will do that...

My thoughts are the jets have too many weapons and coaching to go 1-4 down the road...theyve been pulling wins out their keisters and most likely will continue to do so unfortunately

I hear ya my friend

I did absolutely nothing interesting today and had to endure another afternoon of my fat, boring husband scratching his flabby ass and mumbling about absolutely nothing of interest.

How I wish my town had a good lesbian bar where I could meet interesting and successful women!

Cali fan,

Pats and Jets 9-2 now with 5 games remaining. Beating one of them out is a huge pipe dream. I see neither one going 1-4 down the stretch. Even 2-3 is a stretch of the imagination then we still have to win head to head point differential.

Point differential will be nearly impossible against Pats, they beat us by 27pts meaning we have to win the 2nd meet by at least 28pts. Jets are more manageble, they beat us by 8pts so we only need to beat them by at least 9pts.

So the Pats are the team we need to pull for next week. Its easier to win a point head to head point differential against them in a tie.

They have been pulling out wins and to some extent getting "lucky" but that only tends to happen for so long and they have been doing that against teams like Detroit, Cleveland, Denver, Houston...They won't be able to do that @ NE, @ Chicago, @ Pitt, and against Miami (Fingers crossed) ...lol...

I didn't say I was happy, matter of fact, I'm not even drunk!

I'm not even drunk, I'm just STONED!

OK, I'm a little drunk, but I'm really, really STONED!!!!

Great, I forgot what I was gonna say.

FIST PuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuMP!!!!

what's sad about the schedule is that the season was essentially decided after the first 8 games. in the end, i feel it will be the pittsburg game which will keep miami out of the playoffs, which is a travesty. in any case, the dolphins cannot get very far in the playoffs as the 6th seed. so, miami is essentially playing for a worse draft pick. of course, here i am assuming it is not realistic to assume miami finishes 5-0. this is getting exhausting year after year.

ROTFLMAO! What are you trying to do? Fist pump me into a false sense of vanity! LOL...

WOW..... Eagles scored 26pts against the Bears and lose. If we had only scored 17pts it would have been a huge win!

Now that's the nfl for you guys. LOL

I laid out a game by game with result for the Jets from here on out and I happen to think 1-4 is possible for them however since you disagree then how do you see them finishing out there schedule...?

Another Huge Wow:

San Diego 33-14 Colts 14 and Chargers have the ball inside of Colts 20yd line with 8 minutes left to play. WOW........

Watch out DB!

been waiting to post this but I think that the BLOCKHEAD from Michigan should finally have put to rest all the questions of who should be our starting qb...just to review this season...our six victories have come with Henne as starter or playing the majority of the game (the Titans in which he engineered the go a head TD drive mid third quarter) the Bears loss obviously he did not play and the other 4 losses were to teams that are today a combined 34-10, one of which was the Steelers debacle which I still count as a win...so we actually would 7-3 with Henne as a starter...on top of the fact that Henning has handcuffed Henne...and on top of the fact that he won today on the road with two rookie free agent WR's....so enuff with the BASH THE BLOCKHEAD mentality...he made purely excellent throws today and is a commanding presence in the pocket...when he gets hit from blindside, he rarely fumbles..and the INT he threw was a bad throw...but all GOOD QB's make made throws from time to time...BLOCKHEAD THE HERO!! LONG LIVE THE BLOCKHEAD....and Davone Bess and Jeremiah Bell and all the the defensive studs of today...by weeks end next week either the Steelers or Ravens will have four losses, hopefully one fewer than our beloved mammals and either the Jets or Pats will have three losses with each facing us head to head over the next 5 weeks...its not over yet and we have our destiny in our hands long shot but I think today was a huge morale booster and Henne and R AND R looked as good as they have all season...FINS UP

Not shocked by the Chargers score. Colts defense has been bad (at times awful) most of the season.

Cali fin,

Im more hopeful of either Steelers/Ravens finishing 2-3 with Jags/Chargers losing at least 1 of final 5 games and the Colts and Chiefs winning those divisions. This just seems a more likely scenario than Jets or Pats going 1-4.

Still the greatest longshot of them all may be us going 5-0 in our rmeaining games. So I'm not getting overly optimistic about anything just yet. That's only playing it smart. LOL

I can't wait to see the Sporano Super Fist Pump featured in a Coors light beer commercial.

Fan: Hey Coach, what do you think of the Coors Silver Bullet?

Sporano: SUPER FIST PuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuMP!!!!

Cali, possible, not probable

THE ONLY Way for fins to make it to the playoffs if jhon lennon comes back and sing to us his song (( JEALOUS GUY )).

I know buddy thats why Im trying hard to keep the "vanity" polished off of my shields. LOL

DB, where did you go to school for you to be very strong in math?

Tony Sparano doing a Coors lite super fist pump commercial would be just too funny. LOL

Also DB,

You are incorrect about the tie breaker coming down to head to head point differencial...

Let's say the Jets get another lucky win other than beating Buffalo and finish out 2-3 and we finish out 5-0. Then the tie breaker would go to us...

Here is the breakdown:

Head-to-head (best won-lost-tied percentage in games between the clubs). WE WOULD BE TIED

Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the division. WE WOULD BE TIED

Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games.WE WOULD WIN BECAUSE WE BEAT GB AND JETS LOST TO THEM.

Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference. NOT NECESSARY

Strength of victory. NOT NECESSARY

I'm just sayin'...We have a chance :)

Its amazing how finely tuned your mathematics become when spending a great deal of your life being a mid level drug dealer. LOL

odin, still laughing about the sparano fist pump coors light commercial....

cali, the dolphins finish 5-0? love to see that! not likely....

for the same tie breaker to apply and we had to lose one more game then the only game we could lose would be Buffalo and the Jet's would also have to lose that game...The we would both be 10-6 and we would win the wildcard based on the same tie breaker I stated above...
