Namath has 'love' for Pennington move

Joe Namath knows about playing quarterback from his days with the New York Jets and Los Angeles Rams (yes, many years ago). He knows Chad Pennington from the current Miami quarterback's days with the Jets.

And Namath apparently has "love" for the move coach Tony Sparano made earlier this week when he benched Chad Henne and promoted Pennington to the starting quarterback job. At least that's what Namath said today on the Broadway Blitz, his show on Sirius NFL Radio.

“I gave that a lot of thought and I love the move," Joe Willie said. "Not just love it because I’ve got so much respect for Chad Pennington. Hey, man, he’s owned up every time he’s given a chance. The only problems he’s had is that Lady Luck biting his right shoulder now and then, his injuries.

"But as far as this change, I can see coach Sparano to a degree, and I don’t know if he thought about this, but at this point the team, to me, has to be questioning Henne. You know, when they look at the replays of the games and the snaps and the things that aren’t done that you’d think your quarterback might be able to get done more consistently, that might be catching more eyes with the players than in the past."

Hadn't thought of that and it is a good point. And Namath believes the timing is right for the change.

"Now they have a tough opponent coming in this week.  Now is the time to change because they can go back to Henne some other time. I believe Pennington, dealing with any NFL defense, is as good as it gets when it comes to the mind analyzing, knowing what to do, where to go. So he’s giving that offense a better chance … That season is not lost for the Dolphins just because they are changing quarterbacks at this point.  That defense is still good and they are still in the hunt.”

Follow me on, as Jets fans pronounce it, twittah.

WOW, Kellen Moore is lighting it up in the 1st qtr against Idaho on ESPN right now. Boise St up 28-0 already.

ofcourse the O will look better this week.. Pennington is Hennings style QB..Pennington is good to run this style offense.. Its Henning who should be benched for not designing an offense to compliment his QB.. I mean they were trying to make Henne into a Pennington..

Kellen Moore is completing 72% of his passes this season. Sure we'll never get within sniffing distance of him and even if we had the first overall pick we'd probably draft another olineman. After that this regime would then say they did it because Henne is already our future.

Chad Henne reminds me of a young Terry Bradshaw. There was point Pittsburgh considered cutting ties with Bradshaw but good for them they never did. Bradshaw would go on too be a central piece too leading them to 4 SB titles.

He was a big ole strong kid who seem to not have an ounce of brains any where in body. Now he's a hof'er.

bobydd... you are thowing BIG names .. this is not the case... or you are telling me we have a montana kind in henny?... yes we dont exactly knou, but the odds are not with you... you gave me 4 or 5 names, but i can give you hundreds of them that didn´t perform at their first 21 games and guess what they didnt do in their whole carrer!!... look all im saying is that they considered this situation at the begining of the season, and they keep penny "just in case"... and i don´t know you my man, but if i put big money in get better than 7-9 getting high-priced free agents, the coach staff better have a second option "just in case" they dont give the numbers i demand... cause this is a much talented offensive team than they were a year a go, and it doesn´t look like... and its easier to make a qb change than a coach one...for now.

How long is Henne gonna be called a rookie?

He sat his rookie year

He started 13 games last season (out of 16)

He started 8 games this season

"First full season started" "Blah, blah, blah"

This is his 3rd season! He didn't have the "pressure" of starting his rookie season, got to learn from Penny, and the system, he started most of the year last year, was the starter all offseason, and played the first half of the season...

I'm still not gonna flat out say he's no good, but, for a 3rd year QB that pretty much started all of last season. He should be further ahead than he is at this point.

sujiko tatomiya, empress, cuban

Again, Dan Henning refuses to build his system around Chad Henne's stengths. Henning's system is built for low scoring, ball possession, short throws for QBs such as Pennington. Henning refuses to deviate from his master plan. Fire Dan Henning

was Joe willy sober at the time?, I like the move for now also but I am hoping that Henne is still the future QB we all thought, one thing that might help is to settle on the O lineman for once and get back to running the ball that helps all QBS, GO FINS

marc obviously never played football because if he did he wouldnt be equating sitting on a bench as gaining valuable experience. Sitting on a bench in football is exactly that, sitting on a bench. Till you get out there on that field and play the game you have no clue. marc is right about 13 8, and that equals 21. 21 is not a sufficient number of starts to determine if Henne or anyother QB is going to be good. Again, Henne is playing under a system and philosophy that does not play to his strengths.

yes bobbyd12! absolutely correct, ad infinitum. but ive been saying this since this and last year to much criticisim!

I said it a couple weeks ago and im saying it again. Tony Sparano's undying loyalty to Dan Henning is going to cost everyone their jobs. And its too bad because i like Sparano but he is blind to what is happening here. When a team starts messing up the basics, such as tackling like we saw against Baltimore, its because they are losing their focus.

bobby D. will post on dolfan site...

now that finatic i could totally see happening, Moss has become more trouble than he's worth talent wise, i still dont blame miami one bit for that pass up but i would point the finger at why did they not add someone opposite marshall as a proven #2 reciever in the offseason. Hartline has not panned out this year in that role, and the honest truth is its not a premier reciever that'll be the catalyst for your team, its that 2nd guy that makes or breaks your recieving game in terms of succession.

ok and what are those hennes strengths?, long ball??, lets see
CHAD HENNE BY PASS DISTANCE
Distance Comp-Att Pct
10 yds or less 133-199 66.8
11 to 20 yds 39-64 60.9
21 yds or more 4-14 28.6
rate 39.9 (21 yds or more)
Source: ESPN Stats & Information

compare:
AFC EAST QBs ON PASSES 21 YARDS AND LONGER
Player Comp-Att Pct rate
Sanchez 10-33 30.3 103.2
Brady, 7-23 30.4 70.9
Fitzpatrick, 9-33 27.3 63.9
Source: ESPN Stats & Information

they are not thowing cause they are getting a dam... now you tell me we need ginn aren´t you???? jeje... enough to say... we have now a better starting qb.... but yep henning needs to go.

Stats mean nothing if the system is already flawed with errors, 11 TDs in 8 games is what define you as a team successful or not. no running game to speak of to take pressure off henne, #1 reciever not targeted in redzone harldy at all. 3rd and short playcalling and 3rd and long playcalling have been mystifying to watch. Playaction passes in two minute drills down by more than 7 pts is not what i would call good coaching, Timeouts and time managment issues are also stats we dont get to see documented, but what is documented is the fact that we are next to dead last in scoring and this system sucks with dead henning running the show.

Damn, you guys want to get rid of everyone who doesn't produce big plays everytime they step on the field.
Someone wants to get rid of Hartline now.....interesting?

who cares what Namath says? Armando you're such a J__s lover!! Who cares what they think or say.. Talk to someone else who would have more volume to his opiniong.. uuumm, someone like DAn Marino, or John Elway, who have more knowledge and a better career than idiotic Namath, and ex-J___s.

Can you tell I hate the J__s?

You should too..

SSpeaking of adding a spark, if you haven't seen this clip of Penne in warmups today, you gotta take a look. Now I hope he can still play as well as he raps!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UKQoRwFo_Uc

ohhhh!!! the sistem!!!.... come on !! Fitz guy have better numbers in the long ball than hennes (they should have a better sistem), and sanchez gay does it too... they should have a better sistem.... look henne is ok, but just ok, and hes gonna be a good qb, just a good one... we better built around the "D" and ask to henne or whoever follows penny not to make glaring mistakes and we´ll succeed

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UKQoRwFo_Uc

Now I know we will beat the Titans!

Dying,

Bradshaw was a completely different QB. Much more of a scrambler, ad lib type. His whole fricken team had Hall of Famers at every position.

Go Phins!

I hope you'll remmember that when chad lets the air baloon out and it gets swatted or picked off, and didnt i hear all the same S#it last year before penny got injured, he cant throw, we cants score tds, too many long drives and nothing to show for, i guess its just whichever side the wind likes to blow with you ppl. No running game this year, yep lets see how hanging chad steps up, dont hold your breath tooo long, you might soffocate....

Hey Guys!

It just came to me. I have been trying to think who Henne reminds me of? It's right in front of our eyes!

Kerry Collins!

The other one would be Jay Shrader of the Raiders?

Throw in Trent Dilfer for good measure?

Agree? See the similarities? I would love some feedback on this.

Go Phins!

bobby,

I think a lot of the poor tackling is due to several things-

Youth

Players playing new positions-
Misi was DE now converted. Starks out of position. Crowder back in now but outside instead of inside.

Lack of solid depth

Time of possession

Aggressive style- causing them to over pursue and lose containment.

Lack of fundamentals on one on one open field tackling

Just my thoughts

Go Phins!

jajajajaja.... no , no me voy a sofocar, if we lose i´d prefer to lose with my best team, not losing with a 3 year rookie journey man at qb... penny IS BETTER than henny right now. plain Simple... the sistem, the coaching, the bla, bla, bla, is just bla!!!
One thing we agreed, we are not running.. and it hurts us... but i remmember last year every body was complaining that we were too conservative, we wanted to be the saints or sort of , now we dont want to, we want to run the ball. jeee!
Jeje, quien nos entiende

yep, call it whetever you like, If you think penny gives miami its best team on the field, you havent been watching this team close enough to realize WTF your talking about, im sure if trent green was available, you would accept him back just as well, BTW, your not related to dead henning are you???, just askin.....

Sara Palin For OC!!! We already now have the bridge too nowhere(Penne).

Wtf are you talking about DB, according to the experts pennington is righting this ship and turning this team into SUPER BOWL CONTENDERS.....Our Wait is over, Henning for Vice president of football operations is the next step!!!!

nop... but you are very sold about henny... i dont know why???... dont get angry, i called your boyfriend "good", but now i see he´s "god", not good for you... please accept this he´s not gonna be Brees, PMann, Rivers, Brady, Ryan, Brady, not even Rape-sberger... Sorry back to the reality...jeje

I think reality for this team FROM YOUR STANDPOINT has SPIT, SLAPPED , AND P#SSED ALL OVER YOU YOUR WHOLE LIFE BUT thats okay my man, i feel for you, i feel the pain the 2010 dolphins have cuased you and i hate it too but we what we are , a Very average team, theres no changing, and "boyfriend", you little shedevil, are you jealous *wink*

We would be a 9-7, 10-6 team at best if we had Peyton Manning as qb under the current Dan Henning offensive decision making command.

Only a top 3 nfl qb could give us the chance of making it as a wildcard under Dan Henning. Proof of that is in 2008 Chad Pennington had league MVP considerations when he led us to a wildcard and first round playoff thrashing against the Ravens.

Folks you've already seen as far as we'll ever go in the Dan Henning system. It took Pennington playing out of his mind in 2008 to even achieve this. Will someone please turn the lights off on the way out?

but i repeat myself! Dying Breed, if you really look at it, we continue to repeat the same mistakes ad ifinitum....

My bad, we only won the AFC East because of one of the league's softest schedule, Tom Brady was injured, and Farve's shoulder fell apart at season's end. It was one of those one in a million times when everything seemed to fall into our favor. Then came the reality ko vs Baltimore in the playoffs that year.

We'll never see another AFC East title under Henning unless that same lightning strikes twice in the same place again. We all know how unlikely that is.

jajajajaja, celoso???!!!, no ma... wey, it is IMPOSSIBLE to be jealous about that ... "wink", jeje. Now seriously, based on what you have see, do you really thing Henny could be Miamis franchise QB?? or how many games do you need to find out?... i´m seriuos about it , cause several guys are defending him as if he were an elite QB....i mean i´ve seen flashes, good games (mostly against the Jets, which is on his favor..jeje) but thats it...

Redsky,

You are so correct. Twice did Wayne Huizenga allow 2 of the nfl's biggest and greatest egomaniacs to put the wrong people in charge of franchise destiny. Sandwiched in between were Nick Saban and Cam Cameron.

Huizenga with one swift move of replacing Shula has ruined this once proud franchise for going on 14 seasons now. Maybe Ross cleans house and rights the ship.

If Ross iis as incompetent has Huizenga dont plan on any dolphin SB reservations until at least the year 2025.

Seriously, how can we know that if we cut the strings on every young QB that comes in here after only a season and half, i dont know if henne's the guy or not but how about we let the guy work for an entire year before we cut him loose and declare him another lost case. We all know what penny can do and cannot do as far as limiting what an offense is ABLE to do. The first thing is getting rid of henning because he is stuck on the old smash mouth style of football and only THE WILDPLAYKILLER SUCCESS 2008 is the reason this guy is still around. After that lets get some new offensive system in place and then IF henne still cant produce under a new OC, then would i say henne doesnt have what it takes to be the guy here in miami. But it doesnt look good for your young prospect for the future when you need to provide A so called spark to your offense when there are so many factors involved with this team struggling right now. Pennington is not the solution to our Overall problem which is still needing an answer after this year is done and gone!!!!

Wyane Huizenga the waste management bought a once proud and glorious franchise and by the time he left that's eactly what this franchise has become. G-A-R-B-A-G-E! Trash in trash out.

Mr Ross,

All dolphans are heavily dependant upon you. Please put away this stink that has lingered for far all too long. THX

Signed: Dolphins Nation.

This once glorious franchise was sold to a garbage man and that's exactly what it has become. G A R B A G E ! ! !

i will bet that 99.9% of everyone on this site has not played semi-pro, college, or profootball. anyone that thinks henne should stay the starting quarterback is showing signs of delusion. TOUCHDOWN MIAMI!

i dont know... to me it´s difficult to say that 21 games arent a fair shot... its more than a season... no body in this leage is gonna give you more time than this...i know penny is not the solution, but i mean right now he is a better qb... but i´ll tell you somthing, i´d would rather to keep henne and try to built a super "D", cause like i mentioned, Henne is gonna bo good, but just good... you see greatness since game 1 and henne hasnt shown it in 21 games... or you have it or you dont... see ya

Should we loose Sunday I would like too see no less than Ireland and Henning's head. Peterson can take over as the interim GM and David Lee could take over as interim OC. We wouldnt be any worse for the wear off.

you know , i find it interseting but to me flacco and henne arent that much apart, for that matter neither is sanchez and henne, but heres the biggest differences, two of those guys have better overall complete teams in terms of competing, becuase, A)They allow their QB to spread the field and continue to grow B) They dont have a defensive minded OFFENSIVELY driven OC C) They have pretty solid running games D)They have good special teams E) They have good defense..Bottom line is neither flacco nor sanchez would be able to hold their own by themselves....what is that saying you win as a team and you lose as..... A QB????*LOL*

THANK GOD. Chad p will not only give the fins a win they will score the most points of the year, as for play calling chad p will change lots of plays before the snap which we did not have before. This will be a break out game for the fins. Fins by 17. Watch BM light up the game.

I too think this is a Good move and after the last three weeks, ... it was hard not to see this comming. Chad Henne, is NOT the quarterback of the future. Infact, I think Miami should start dangling him on their "fishing lines" to see if any team would be interested in trading for him before draft day ! Chad Henne, has proven that he is NOT a starting quarterback in the NFL. He is NOT the quarterback that can lead your team back from a 3 to 6 point deficit, with 2 minutes or less left in the game. I'll further add, that Chad Henne is perhaps a bust for the Dolphins ... he's certainly a disappointment.

other teams have said henne is an "easy read" and the fins offense is "predictable". this combo spells disaster in the NFL. its ahuge advantage for the defense and explains why we are ranked 31st in scoring TD's. is our problem henne or henning? hopefully we'll find out with the qb change.

"Twittah" would be a Boston accent. "TwiDUH" would be a NY accent.

Is this the change that the Players and Fans wanted? I don't know but watch the execution.

i remember when coach mckay of the bucs was asked about what he thought of his team's execution. mckay said; "i'm in favor of it"

Henne will be fine...He will start again...If Miami gives him ups he will be a star somewhere else...of course.

JAJA!

To all posters. I suggest you write Mando.

SINCE he does not blog as "regularly" we all like, I will take it upon myself to make up the difference.

What does that mean? It means paragraphs. It means long-winded posts bloviating about any and every topic imaginable. Even things I know nothing about.

We need to up these page counts. I don't want to see 6,7,8 pages of responses, I want to see 12,13 pages. Therefore, I'm now trying to take up an entire page with one post.

I do this all for you Dolfans. Don't thank me now. Wait and see the little nuggets of info you can plagiarize from me and sound smart to your friends. I don't mind, as long as subconsciously, you know where you got that info. That's good enough for me.

Another thing. Slo-blows. Breakfast of champions.

The comparison of Henne to Bradshaw is very fair.

Internet is all about the Truth and consequently cannot be manipulated.

BESS ON CHAD.P...(( HE WILL IGNITE THE OFFENSE ,HE HAS BEEN THERE BEFOR AND WE NEED HIM ))..............

THERE'S A THOREY OUT THERE that says if dolphins fail to make the playoffs w/penne at the helm that would result in 2 actions;

1-DAN HENNING WIL BE SHOWN THE DOOR
2-HENNE WILL BE BACK AS A STARTER IN 2011

BUT IF WE LOSE ON SUNDAY;

HENNING WILL BE GONE
THE STARTER FOR THIS TEAM, I DON'T KNOW WHO WOULD BE .
