Dolphins production chart opens eyes

Tony Sparano likes to get inside of the numbers for his football team because, I assume, the digits sometimes can confirm what he sees on tape or perhaps on rare occasion present a different revelation that isn't necessarily shining through on tape.

So in the last couple of days while his players were off, the Dolphins coach was crunching numbers on a player productivity chart.

"One of the things I did with the football team the last couple of days is I put together a production chart of the last three games at every position including special teams and then we ranked them all via their production," Sparano said Monday.

"My figuring with the three games is we've kind of been on a roller coaster the last three games. So going back seven, eight games you'd be looking at some players that aren't even on the football team right now. The last three games we are 1-2 starting with the Baltimore game which was a staple game for us at that place, and then we really needed to win the game against Tennesee and we really needed to win the last game.

"When you're back's against the wall as it is right now -- we know our margin for error is a lot slimmer than it is for the Jets or New England -- so going back three games I figured this is crunch time and our backs are against the wall, so let's look at the producers. Let's look at some of those things and throw it out there and see what we come up with."

Sparano is not throwing the production chart results out there that I know of. (Memo to the coach: If you'd like to e-mail it to me, I won't say nothing just send it to asalguero@miamiherald.com :-))

But this being a blog and all, and me being paid to give my opinion and all, I'd like to share with you the top three or four producers I see off the last three games the Dolphins have played. There is a serious surprise in the bunch.

I would say Miami's top producer the last three weeks has been Karlos Dansby. If you don't agree, you go argue with the man. He'll be taking you to the streets like LeRon McCLain. Dansby recorded 8 tackles, 10 tackles, and 10 tackles in the last three games. He has a sack, he has a pass defensed, and he's forced a fumble. It is rare when Dansby takes a bad angle to ball carrier -- something his running mate Channing Crowder could learn to improve -- and at least two of those tackles I just told you about stopped potential first-down gains.

The second most productive player was tougher to pick because both Yeremiah Bell and Cameron Wake are doing work in that three-game span. Wake's tackle total was eight against Baltimore, six against Chicago, but only one against Tennessee. He had three sacks in the three games, with two coming against the Ravens. He had one forced fumble in the three games. Obviously, the Titans game makes Wake seem more ... human. He was hurt during the game. He was handled by Tennessee's tackle combo. But does that erase the other two outings?

Yeremiah Bell is on pace to just about equal his numbers of a year ago when he went to the Pro Bowl but something has been missing. Oh, I know, he hasn't had to chase down from behind three or four ball carriers that plowed over Akin Ayodele or Gibril Wilson like he did last year. Bell collected five tackles at Baltimore, eight verus the Titans and five more against Chicago. He has a forced fumble. He has a pass defensed, he has a sack -- all in the last three games. That's productive.

And now I'm going to stun you.

Brian Hartline is one of Miami's most productive players the past three games. He caught four passes for 85 yards against Baltimore for a 21.3 yards per catch average. He caught five passes for 98 yards and a 19.6 yards per catch average against Tennessee. He had five receptions for 70 yards for a 14.0 yards per catch average versus Chicago.

Hartline has been Miami's most productive and most reliable receiver the last three games. Not only is he producing but he has (for whatever reason, including a bad throw from the QB) missed only one targetted throw in each game. In other words, if Miami QBs are throwing to Hartline the last three games, they are getting results for the effort rather than drops or incompletions of another sort.

No, Hartline does not have a TD in the last three games. Guess what? Neither does any other Miami wide receiver.

This is just my list while I await Sparano to e-mail me his. (asalguero@miamiherald.com).

But it should tell you something about Miami's issues when neither running back Ronnie Brown nor Ricky Williams could be considered as having been highly productive recently. It says something that no Miami QB is highly productive in that time, and in fact, Chad Henne got benched during that time. It should say something that alpha receiver Brandon Marshall has not been exceedingly productive in that time, particularly when you balance receptions with drops and penalties.

So who am I leaving out? Who else has been productive? And who hasn't been?

Cameron Wake also drew a few holding penalties against the Bears. Those are as good as sacks. He's on fire.

Brandon Marshall is merde - flakes out when the team needs him most.

Sparano, is making an ass out of himself......Wouldn't any professional organization be doing this on a regular basis anyhow?

To delclare this at this point screams of desperation and failure.

shaggy, i was thinking the same thing. This stuff should be done on real time. Isn't there a quality control coach or something? I mean, what good is the info from 3 games ago now? I don't like this man as a head coach - doesn't seem to have the adequate smarts.

There is no way to quantify it because Stats dont tell the whole story but I would say that K. Langford should be considered for the list as well.

What really ticks me off is that I see teams like Atlanta, Jacksonville, Tampa Bay, And even the Lions improve their game. Yet Miami Is becoming the Bengals south.

Yes The lions are 2-7 but they will probably whip our ass this year and will surpass us in the coming years if we don't change our philosophy. Hell Buffalo is playing with more heart than us now.

The colts can fight New England to the wire with a banged up squad and receivers that nobody ever heard of. What the FF is OUR problem?

I think this team went to crap starting with the departure of the Robbies as owners.

I am a big Henne fan. Think about it, who has he lost to this year Pittsburgh, Baltimore, New York, New England and Chicago. All are either tied for or leading in their division. Remember he went to Green Bay and Minnesota and then beat Tennesee at home. All of these teams are pretty good. So why all the talk about him being benched? Fire Henning and get a coordinator like Tom Moore for Indianapolis and you will see a drastic difference in Henne. I say open the wallet and bring in Cowher for HC and hire a proven OC to run the offense. Mike Nolan has done a decent job this year with the defense but I dont see the same tenacity I did in the first couple of weeks. GO PHINS!

Is henning on top of the least productive? He should add his own name also. Sparano is useless. get rid of him Ross.

jmart henne didn't lose to chicago. That would be thiggy

morono has completely lost it

what about a coaching production chart?

all of em would be on the bottom of it.

Sometimes stats mean squat and this is the time. We do not need to look at numbers to tell us Crowder sucks and Dansby is a beast. Hartline works his butt off and Marshall acts like a diva. Henne is like a roller coaster with no consistency,( Sanchez is getting better every week as a 2nd year starter). One stat I could tell you is we are almost back where we were 3 years ago. Parcells and Co. have done nothing better than most of the other coaches we had. We still need alot of rebuilding to be considered a contender. What a shame the last 3 years have been of waiting for Parcell 3 year master plan to work, he failed. Can't even to begin where to draft 1st then wait till the third round for our next pick

Fire Henning, get an offensive coordinator that wasn't born during or before World War 2. Get a little bit of speed in the draft or free agency(Jamaal Charles). Leave Henne as the starter and we will be fine.

TO BE OR NOT

I DIDN'T SEE;;;;
DHAD.P
MARSHALL
THIGGY
BERGER
SEAN SMITH
DAN HENNING
IS ANY LIST FOR MOST DISRUPTING PLAYER ON THE TEAM WHEN IT COMES TO CHANGE THE COURSE OF THE GAME ARMANDO????????

MARSHALL ,ANY ONE

This just illustrates what is wrong with out offense. With Marshall, Williams, Brown, heck even Bess and Fasano - Hartline should never be our most productive player. This starts from the top, with remarkably poor game planning. Thats you Henning

ARMANDO, WHO AM I TO DISAGREE W/ YOUR SELECTIONS OF PLAYERS ,WITH EYES FOR THE GAME AND BRAIN TO GO WITH IT .

I agree Marshall is messing up, but I'd be a bit frustrated too if I had to play in Henning's offense.

But, as to personnel decisions, here's a horrible one: not taking Santonio Holmes for a 6th-round draft pick. I mean C'MON! Here's the SB MVP, who got suspended a few games for doing something that will be legal in the next decade, and we pass on him. WHY? Have we regretted taking Ricky back? No. If Merling comes back and has a great season, will anyone care about his transgressions? No. So we need to take "acorns" when they fall right out of the tree and into our lap. THAT type of chance was worth it for a 6th-round pick (has a 6th-rounder ever started for this team? Besides Bess, who was undrafted.) Dumb move Miami, obviously you couldn't spot a great player if he fell onto your lap and called you daddy!

Start developing an offensive system to suit your QB instead of drafting a strong armed gunslinger type and trying to make him into Pennington, change the OC bring in a sysytem to suit Henne with a speed receiver and lets fairly judge Henne before we feed him to the wolf, love Schlereth's comments on Miami's coaching gameplan against Chicago by the way, ESPN or look on Sun Sentinel, now thats a guy who pulls no punches

i cannot believe this. congratulations to sporano for doing his stupid analysis. does anyone actually think it matters at this point? what, is he trying to motivate the players with this? the stupid decisions in the draft the last two years are what has sunk this team. i mean, please, odrick over dez bryant and earl thomas? these guys seem obsessed with trading down in the first round to get a second round draft pick. guess what, second round players aren't as good as top 15 players. just take the best player available, and i promise, it will improve your team. also, if i am not mistake, did hartline or did he not fall down on one of henne's interceptions, and have a crucial fumble that essentially cost us a game. do these pathetic plays not outweigh his 4 receptions for no touchdowns?

TEAM REX RYAN-HAS OBVIOUSLY MET OBJECTIVES.
TEAM PARCELLS-BIG TIME FAILURE!
ROSS-BRING IN A NEW MAMAGEMENT TEAM, ONE THAT HAS A MENTALITY TO WIN, ONE THAT CAN SCOUT PLAYERS, ONE THAT IS NOT AFRAID TO SPEND MONEY FOR REAL STARS.
TOP PRIORITY-GO AFTER MICHAEL VICK!!!

Henne sucks. Get a real QB Miami !!!

THE FIN FANS ARE LIKE A HERD ,THEY FOLLOW ANY IDEAS ,THEY NEVER COME UP W/ IDEA OF THEIR OWN AS THE CASE M.VIKE.HE'S A LOCK NEXT YEAR HERD AS A FRANCHISE TAG PHI FOR 20 MILLION A YEAR THEN THEY WILL SEE WHAT HAPPENS .

Push your pencil or push people around and win a game.

whatever

sry, to late for Vick. need to trade up in the draft. make Henne compete with a real QB

Let me start by saying I like Hartline. I really do. BUT, we are not running the ball because we are seeing 8 man fronts. Marshall is being double covered. Teams are now finding ways to take Bess out of the game also, as his production is down. Fasano has been and always will be inconsistent in the passing game. So who does that leave? Hartline! My argument is that if Brian Hartline was a legit 2 receiver, which I don't believe he is, his numbers would be through the roof right now. And they're not. They're just ok. Opposing teams are perfectly happy to let Hartline catch 5 or 6 chunk passes as long as he is not getting td's.

Wake and Dansby are the only consistently great players on this team.

bellichek said it best; "stats are for losers. the only stat that matters is wins and losses". sparano's not head coach material! he's busy working on play counts and taking out the "hot" back because its not his turn in the rotation.

GREG Z .......... 10/10 ON YOUR LAST POST .

thanks Aloco. i'm really frustrated with the regime right now.

Mike Vick is a Ferrari with an impending engine failure. We don't need his type.

We need more a P manning type, A wes welker type, a hines ward type, a troy palamalu type, These wimps we have now ain't getting it done. The coaches aren't either.

A big hearty FU to parcells too. None of your teams have done squat since you left the giants. I bet you send norwood a fruitcake every year eh? Go to hell, and thanks for stalling our team another Three and (possibly longer) years.

WE NEED A REGIME CHANGE .EVEN IF WE HAVE TO ASK BUSH TO DO IT FOR US .

Did anyone say Long? The guy is all tore up and still owns DE's.

I am changing Carey's name to Hurricane. I called him that because of the amount of wind he hears when people are running by him.

And Crowder is a playing gutless. He is always that one step behind on the big back avoiding contact. So his new name is Ted Dinn. The d is for defense Ginn.

The rest of the guys are playing OK. No line = no run game. Especially in todays NFL. So it is 8 men in the box.

I forgot. Brandon Marshall is The Punk. The last game he played like a punk before he got injured. He really needs to "WAKE UP" and GROW UP.

Wow, my respect for Mark Schlereth just went up a couple of more notches.

He was absolutely trashing Henning and deservedly so. He mentioned ONE of many, main complaints that I made.

The defense's job is to make your offense one dimensional. Henning calls 4 run plays the entire first half.

I told you guys and I posted it quite a few time last week. The Bears MVP would be Dan Henning!

Then for an encore, his halftime "adjustment" was to mix in some play action passes. BRILLIANT!!!!

sporano has had three years, and there is not significant progress. childress went to the nfc championship game last year, and was fired today. there are some good players on this team. the coaches and front office need to be overhauled, and lets move forward. i mean, ireland called the patriots about logan mankins. are you serious? why didn't he ask bellichek for his game plan while he was at it. its only the dolphins who trade top quality players within the division for 2nd round draft picks. where was sporano's head coaching experience? new haven? he was an offensive line coach in dallas, and we have one of the worst offensive lines in the nfl. i mean, the guys playing (mcquisten) can'e even block on field goals and punts.

How soon can Brad Childress get to Miami and start calling plays for the Dolphins?

He may not have been a great HC but he's a helluva an OC.

SHAGGY, you have no heart .how can you dump on the god father of football ?

some people just can't be HEAD COACH LIKE MACDANIEL OR CHIDRESS BUT IF YOU PUT EITHER ONE OF THEM IN A DARK ROOM THEY WILL BE GREAT AS OC.CHIDRESS HAS EYES THAT CAN SCARE KIDS AND ADULTS A LLIKE ,

You left our Parcells, all of his hard work but this gem together... pfffftttt.

Aloco....Godfather of football? Parcells is the godfather of mayflower van lines. The Move king.

look guys Sparano originally apply for the cpa position but it was filled, so Parcalls told Sparano look i know you really good with the numbers game but i will put as head coach for now until the position is avaliable!! LMAO

Oh, and Sporano, How many fist pumps the last 3 games, He really has put his rotator cuff in serious jepordy from all the field goals. THAT is sacrifice.

Offensively - First thing is first they need to get rid of Dan Henning and they will. I am 100% positive he will retire/resign. The next are my list of things in order and I will give my reasons why.

RB - Ricky is too old to be a starter by I would more then welcome him back as a back up because unlike Ronnie he actually runs with authority. Ronnie is a bum. He isn't an all time bust or in the Blair Thomas bust class but he is good when healthy and that is it. He isn't great he is just good and for #2 pick that isn't good enough.

Center - Miami's running game needs a shot in the arm up front too. Joe Berger is a great guy to have as a spot starter and backup because he can play both center and guard but Jake Grove was much better at creating creases and running lanes. I know it was economics most likely why he was let go because I can't see why else.

WR - Brandon Marshall is having a good season but not a great one. Blame him the QB play and offensive play calling for it and that's why it's been less then stellar. He flat is having a so so year and with his contract you could argue a bad year but I think he is still a top 10 WR and with other play makers he will flourish.

QB - QB is much lower then I expected me to put it but where will Miami go with QB. Do they draft another project or do they try and put more play makers and go heavy free agency and heavy drafy and give Henne one more shot. I say they give him this shot if they add the other pieces.

TE - I don't expect Antonio Gates to walk through the door but a pass catching threat in any shape or form would be a nice compliment to Fasano.

Miami is medicore because they have no explosive players. I watched the Giants and Eagles last night and the Giants have Manningham, Bradshaw (Save the fumbles), Nicks and the Eagles are loaded with deep threats and a home run threat at RB. I love Parcells and has built a nice foundation of players and some decent talent but Ireland has to go glitz and glamour picks and go for broke with some game breakers or Miami will continue to be average and finishing 8-8.

AND NOW THE REST OF THE LEAGUE is catching on to what we've known for the past 9 games. Our coaching staff is garbage!!

Former Pro Bowl guard Mark Schlereth, an ESPN NFL television analyst, held back nothing in roasting the game plan the Miami Dolphins coaches implemented against the Chicago Bears on Thursday night.

Schlereth's comments were preceded by a question asking how the team could have handed the ball to the running backs only seven times.

"I just think it's inexcusable. That is an awful job by that coaching staff."

Schlereth's co-host interjected, asking, "Even if [the Bears] are stacking the box?"

The three-time Super Bowl champion (with the Washington Redskins and Denver Broncos) then went off:

"That's an an awful job by that coaching staff regardless. Their best 11 guys are when they get into their Wildcat formation, no disrespect to Tyler Thigpen. They got into the Wildcat exactly zero times [on Thursday night], they did not run the ball at all [on Thursday night]. ... I've heard excuses coming out of Miami, I've heard people talking about, 'You know, We have a beat-up offensive line.' All the more reason that you run the football. Let me tell you something, pass protection in this league is 10 times harder than run blocking: assignment-wise, picking up blitz, all those different things.

"With young guys and guys who don't have a lot of experience, much harder than it is to run the football. So don't give me this baloney about Oh, we had guys injured, so we're gonna drop back and throw it. That's garbage. Absolute garbage. The coaching staff for the Miami Dolphins ought to be embarrassed. As a former offensive lineman, when I watch that, what they put on the field, it makes me angry, because I know how hard it is to go out there and pass protect when you've got guys like the Chicago Bears defense breathing down your neck.

"Your job as a defense is to make that offense one-dimensional. Miami walked out of the locker room one-dimensional, they did that for the Bears. Now, the Bears, on the flip side, made them zero-dimensional, because once [the Dolphins] became one dimensional, they were just rushing the passer. And then I would see things like 'We're running play-action.' Hey, yeah, that will getcha. Right? That will get the Bears. Run some play-action. You ran it four times in the first half. Run a couple play-actions, that'll fool them.

"That was a garbage game plan."

For his part, Bears All-Pro middle linebacker Brian Urlacher wasn't complaining on Thursday night: "They didn't run any Wildcat. We prepared for that thing, prepared for it, and they didn't run it. So, thank you."

Mando, Dan Henning should get points, He has gotten older which is something he has done right, Oh, and he has validated his insignificance in the NFL better than anyone.

Dear Mr. Henning,

Is Mark Schlereth just another blow hard shitteragain? Does his being a four time Pro Bowl offensive guard have any bearing on your assessment of him?

Just curious as to what your opinion is on this guy, as he has clearly stated his opinion of you?

Don't quote me on this Mr. Henning, but his final word on you was something along the lines of "Garbage Can Dan"!

Oh and one more thing Mr. Henning, is that other shitteragain named Finnegan a Pro Bowler?

I finally figured out Parcells, he is a nomad food follower. His large girth proves it.

Giants NY pizza, Pats Lobster, clam chowder, Jets NY Pizza again, Dallas BBQ, Miami Cuban food. One only hopes Mexico does not get an NFL team.........Parcells is like toucan sam, except he follows his stomach instead of his nose.

Stop eating fat ass.stay put for awhile.

I think tired fin fan has hit it on the mark. We're all tired too.

Non Productives...Henning and the entire FO all the way down to coaching.
Mando...tell ole Tony to do a chart on the coaching staff too...

HIRE BILL COWHER NOW!!!! THE SEASON IS LOST. FIRE THE HEAD COACH, THE O-COORDINATOR, AND LET BILL COWHER COME IN AND GET THIS TEAM WHERE IT NEEDS TO BE. IN CONTENTION EVERY YEAR. THE MARINO ERA HAS SPOILED THIS FAN WITH EXPECTATIONS OF A PLAYOFF RUN EVERY YEAR AND NOW, WTF!!! PAY "BILL COWHER" ANY AMOUNT OF $$$ BEFORE OTHER TEAMS VIE FOR HIS SERVICES. SIGN HIM TO A 10 YEAR DEAL WORTH $200 MILLION DOLLARS AND GET HIM A NICE HOUSE ON THE BEACH!!!

WIN LOOSE, OR TIE... DOLPHINS TILL' I DIE!!

I'm really not sure where the fins are going. I kinda like Sparano, but Dan Henning has to go. I kinda like Henne but not sure he's the long term solution. I've never been a big fan of Marshall personality-wise because he does bone-head things like the taunting penalty he did on Thursday night. I like Ronnie and Ricky but there looking old. Other then Jake long the rest of the O-like is pedestrian. I like the defense but they're carrying too much of the load. I don't think this team is close at all to being a playoff team and fear more years of mediocrity! No depth, No imagination, No heart...when is the last time this team has rallied to win when they should lose...usually they lose. Jets, they find a way and therein lies the difference...very sad.

who are we kidding!!!!!!, Miami does not have any strengths.... the running game is mediocre at best.... ronnie brown is not an elite RB and Ricky williams is too old, seems like he does not want to play + fumbling the ball a lot for the few carries he has..... we need real RB's and real WR as well as an offensive coordinator who is a bit more current with todays NFL.

I don't post but I have to say something I'm finally glad to see someone else talk about Channing Crowder, very little production from such a big mouth. The man continuously takes the worst angles towards tackling and can't get off a block to save his a**. Now that Dansby is here it is actually blatant how bad he really is, now I know we have a whole host of other problems to deal with and it's probably not a good idea to kick my team when they are down but I'd love to see the production numbers on Channing Louder I'm sure it would support my feelings about this man, and that come draft time here's one more position to address. And I must say we do have quite a few great pieces in place and I know with a few more the future can only get better and win or lose I'm always a FAN!!!!! the losses pain me but still I hold out hope for the future Go Fins

Miami Dolphins are still looking for their Identity

Ooh na na, what's my name

Ooh na na, what's my name

CROWDER HAS A BUSINESS ON THE SIDE BESIDE FOOTBALL, HE DELIVER TO YOUR HOUSE ANY THING YOU WANRT FROM FOOD TO FLOWERS.

TRUE

new staff will cut crowder

i sgree MR ROSS should get a contract ready for MR COWHER give him 2% of the team that way he will be commited for the long hall and if COWHER wants to resign or go somewhere else than let him buy out his part of the ownership!!

sparano with good news;"those guys practiced their tails off today". i guess we got the nfl's best practice team. just wish it would carry-over to a game. the F.O. is really clueless. the trifecta should leave together.

Screw Bill Cowher, nothing special.

we give cower 5 donkey and 3 adult mountain goats to keep him happy and if he wants to live he got to give them back .

OK, WE NEED A STAR QB THEN EVERY THING WILL FILL INTO PLACE.

Cowher will coach The one win Carolina Panthers next season

and the Dolphins are still looking for their Identity

Ooh na na, what's my name?

Ooh na na, what's my name?

Good news, Henne back at practice, brace on knee but hopefully ready to go vs. Oakland

bobbyd u still think this is a good team?? u still like this garbage staff. hate to say it , but i told u so. ripped on me back in september for being a realist.

Spady,

I've been down on Crowder for awhile. The sad part is, he has outplayed everyone else that we've tried.

The good news is, we might not have to spend a draft pick to find his replacement.

We got a guy that has a very similar story, worth ethic and athleticism as Cam Wake. Now that this season is getting away from us, I'm looking forward to seeing Micah Johnson getting a lot of playing time. It wouldn't hurt to see alot more of Roberto Wallace and Marlon Moore either.
