So now it falls to Brandon Marshall again. Now that the Randy Moss dream came and went, now that the Dolphins kicked the tires on Randy Moss and decided not to rent the enigmatic wide receiver, Marshall is once again the only legit downfield threat the Dolphins can turn to.
Problem is there are whispers that Marshall isn't having a great season. He does, after all, have only one touchdown compared to 23 TDs his past three seasons in Denver -- a 7.6 TDs per year average.
Fine, I'll give you that he's not being as productive with the crooked number. But you must give me that the offensive approach in Miami in the red zone is lacking. The Dolphins cannot figure out how to get Marshall open and free of double-coverage in that area. (Suggestion: Put him in motion every once in a while, people!)
Anyway, aside for the scoring catches, Marshall is actually on pace to have a better season than he's ever had. Check out the graph below.
Marshall is on pace for 107 catches this season. That would be a career high.
Marshall is also on pace for 1,344 yards this season. That would be a career high.
His current 12.5 yards per catch average is higher than he had the past two seasons in Denver -- when he made the Pro Bowl.
Marshall is doing just fine, thank you.
Could he have used the help of having Randy Moss on the other side of the field? Absolutely!
Is the situation hopeless with only Marshall on the team?
No.

Home stop pushing Hartline!!!!
He fails to consistently catch the ball. Even when wide open.
He is not "tough". Any contested ball never is won by Hartline. When he gets decked, he doesnt hold on to it.
Plus he is running his mouth on local radio shows.
He has some upside but I dont want to get old waiting for the breakout.

Mark In Toronto,
10-6?
If we lose to the Ravens Sunday we're staring right down the barrel of losses on the road to the Jets and Pats. We Play the Titans @ Miami next week. Thats a very tough way to snap a 3 game home skid. We could possibly lose all 4 games making us 9-7 at best.
Do I dare say the Raiders are playing fine football as of late. We have a road trip to Alameda County stadium too. As it now stands we are possibly staring down the barrel of 8-8 right now.
The ship has to get righted now! Beginning Sunday at Baltimore. Its now or possibly never. I see this game as the barometer to whether our stock goes up or will it go down. A loss here has great potential to begin our playoff swoon.
Posted by: DyingBreed | November 04, 2010 at 12:00 PM
It seems that no one is talking about the Ravens game. I think it is a must win to get into the playoffs. I don't think a 10-6 record will earn a wildcard spot this year.
Good luck, phins. You'll need it.

We didn't get Moss
We didn't get this guy or that guy
Wha Wha Wha! Stop your sniveling!
This team was 1 and 15 with No idea of a QB, fresh off the Saban and Ricky mess. The team was old and had come off some pretty poor to average drafts.
This team is now something it had not been in a lot of years, including the Marino years, TOUGH AND PHYSICAL!
How many years did we watch offensive poetry in motion by air? Only to flop on defense in the end and never ever be able to run when needed.
There is an excellent foundation here a very young foundation, This regime has done the dirty work by adding size and strength. Building from the trenches out. The defense stops the run pretty well and the pass rush got youthful and fast over night. Unlike a lot of smaller teams of the past this team is built for December. Take into account that the Phins have played a very tough schedule the last 25 games or so. The cake has been baked fools! Adding speed is the frosting and it is coming.
Someone on here talks up Jeff Fisher. What the hell has He won? If your name isn't Shula, Knoll, Walsh, Johnson or Belichick don't come knocking on my door. They all "won" multiple championships, in a dominating fashion.
I for one am going to be the happiest man in the world when I see our little penguin on world wide television "Fist Pumping" as time expires at the Super Bowl on his way to hoist the Lombardi Trophy.
SO LET IT BE WRITTEN! SO LET IT BE DONE!
I'M CREEPING DEATH! MAETALLICA

At the Ravens Sunday we'll begin to find out what we really have here. Usually beginning around game eight the separation between playoff contenders and pretenders began.
A win at the Ravens would be a huge way for this team to state they are for real. If youre going to be a big dog you have to begin by beating a big dog.
Posted by: DyingBreed | November 04, 2010 at 12:12 PM
DB, why do you concede defeats to Tennessee, NYJ and NE right off?
Who made them the 1972 Miami Dolphins?
Everyone can be beaten in this league.
In case you haven't noticed, he hav e apretty darn good football team here that shouldn't concede defeat to anyone.
We are 13th in offense overall, 12 in the pass, 16th in the run.
Defense 8th overall, 12th against the pass, 11th against the rush.
This has also been against several top 10 teams according to the "braintrust" that compiles the ESPN power rankings.
I know Dolphins fans show the same kind of beahvioural traits as those unfortunate abused puppies that we too often see at the pound. And with good reason after Wannstedt, Saban, and Cameron abused this franchise. But it's ok to believe - we are a good team. We've played the best and nobody has pushed our offense or defense around. Our special teams - well that's another story. Still, we've traded shots with the best of them and even if they come out with a victory, they breathe a heavy sigh of relief, count their blessings, they take it and can't wait to get out of town like the Steelers did.
Any talk of an 8-8 or 9-7 season is ludicrous to me. If that turns out to be the case, it will be a colossal disappointment and people will need to be held accountable. However, I do not see it. We are good! We will win our share!
I believe in a 10 win season and nobody will convince me otherwise until it's mathematically impossible.
Seriously though some of this negativity really irks me. In August, well we will get killed in Minnesota, we will get killed in Green bay, Cincinnati will probably beat us too. Some of you were even saying that Buffalo would beat us in week 1.
Well, be a defeatist if you want to. But I love this team, I love the players, and I believe in them because that is what sports is all about - PASSION! And I have passion to spare to support this team. I just wish those of you in South Florida knew how lucky you really are to have this franchise in your backyard and frankly they deserve better tsupport than they're getting.
Posted by: Mark in Toronto | November 04, 2010 at 12:12 PM
It's not a pretty game but I'll take a win over the Ravens this week by a FG or two. Carpenter Rocks! We generally play well and match up well against so-called physical teams and we all know we will be trying to show how physical we are by lining up and running against a very stout defensive. Go Ricky! Henning, please call in sick for this weekend.
Posted by: tj | November 04, 2010 at 12:13 PM
Martin,
Right now we're like a powerful 18 wheeler that cant manuever tight spaces. We have power but very little speed and agility. It wont get you a nfl championship. WTH it may not even get you a wildcard berth.
Posted by: DyingBreed | November 04, 2010 at 12:16 PM
tj, the Ravens are 17th against the rush. Not bad, but this isn't the Blatimore rush d from 10 years ago either.

We need to be 11-5 to make the playoffs...that means we have to go 7-2 down the stretch.
Assuming we lose to BAL & NE, here are the 7 must wins:
TN
CHI
OAK
CLE
NYJ
BUF
DET
Hard to see us winning all 7 games, but that's why we line em' up each Sunday.

Mark In Toronto,
Havent conceded anything. Just being a realist and stating what we're possibly staring down the gun barrel at. As a Dolfan the last 13yrs everytime Ive counted a win before we had the egg in the basket theyve always disappointed.
I see exactly what this team lacks so this season Ive removed the aqua and orange sunglasses and see more clearly now. I'm keeping self-deception at a minimum.
Anything wrong with that?
Posted by: DyingBreed | November 04, 2010 at 12:21 PM
lh. cobbs is hurt today. he aint practicing. you may see lex this game and i want to see that too btw.
Posted by: 2 watt | November 04, 2010 at 12:23 PM
Mark in Toronto, people are nutz. No one in that second half is unbeatable. I said at start of year, 5-3 first half, 6-2 second half. Baltimore will be tough but we certainly can win this game. Watch the Jets struggle against the Lions too.
Posted by: bobbyd12 | November 04, 2010 at 12:23 PM
Ummm Armando, they have put Marshall in motion. They've even put him in the backfield and flared him out. This isn't very creative. If he's manned up, the guy just follows him. You then know he has a guy helping over the top. We don't need him in motion in a vanilla offense, we need a new offensive philosophy!
The PROBLEM is formations. We are TOOO vanilla. No creativity, no variations at all. Where are the bunch formations which causes guys on D to pick themselves out of a play trying to track their man? Where are the spread or 4 WR sets that you can use to spread a D out and even run Draw plays?
This team is about digs, in's, outs, WR screens to Bess & Marshall and roll outs. THAT'S IT. Nothing for a defense to gameplan against. It's too basic & almost laughable.
Marshall isn't a problem, Henning & Sporano are. Get a new O. Coordinator with some imagination, a new head coach who isn't so damn conservative, A TE & RB with speed & this offense will be dominant.

Posted by: 2 watt | November 04, 2010 at 12:25 PM
2Watt,
With Gruden the only way there's minor tweeking is if we were already running the west coast offense. First thing to go would be Chad Henne.
Next, Tyler Thigpen would be shoved down our throats. Gruden and his overbloated ego would try to force us us to believe Thypen will be the next Steve Young or Joe Montana.
He'll have us chanting: "Four more Years!" But it wont be a good thing, it'll be about yet another rebuilding period.
Posted by: DyingBreed | November 04, 2010 at 12:26 PM
Mando, here's my prescription for correcting the Fins lack of "scoring":first surgically remove Granpa Henning from Sparano's hip:second, graft David Lee in same opening on Sparano's hip;third,mix-in Roberto Wallace in the three and four receiver sets.
Posted by: Finsfan Ralph | November 04, 2010 at 12:27 PM
I dont get everyone, including Armando and Greg Cote saying this was a low risk rental. The reason Moss is gone from BOTH NE and Minn is because he had become a distraction due to him wanting a long-term deal and no decent run team will commit to this lazy basket case. Dont worry we'll all have another chance to pick him up soon. Once he realizes (like TO) that there is no long term demand for his services be will be stuck sigining 1 year deals. At this rate he might be stuck sigining 1 week deals.
Posted by: AMDolfan | November 04, 2010 at 12:29 PM

Posted by: 2 watt | November 04, 2010 at 12:30 PM
Breed, that is the truth man...gruden would be bad for us, all you said is correct. Also remember that gruden isnt the best draft-er either, he's made so many "questionable" picks when he was in tampa..he drafts like we did the last few years and we dont need more of that nonsense. Gruden equalls bad fit for miami.

From the Fins website:
Dan Henning - Offensive Coordinator
Steve Bush - Offensive Quality Control
Dan Campbell - Coaching Intern/Offense
Dave DeGuglielmo - O-Line
George DeLeone - TE's
Karl Dorrell - WR's
David Lee - QB's
James Saxon - RB's
Never knew we had an "offensive quality control" coach...Hey Steve, your QC plan is not working, try something different!
Posted by: NHFINSFAN | November 04, 2010 at 12:33 PM
Joe Shmoe,
Are you as sick of hearing qb Chad Henne say, " We just take what the coverage gives us", as I am. To me that says we have very little creativity and the defense "dictates what we are allowed to do in the passing game. This isnt good at all.
Thats why we brought in Nolan on defense because Pasqualoni allowed offenses to dictate to his defense. We all know how well that worked out. Now we have the exact same thing happening on offense.
Great offenses dictate to the defense on how they will have to defend them, not vice versa.

Posted by: wolfman1313 | November 04, 2010 at 12:37 PM
Dying,
What I'm saying is this team is being built to make a several year run. It will address the speed issue.
I take you to task my friend on the speed issue. Other than the Rams of recent memory. Where is the SB winner with overwhelming speed?
Besides, Wake and Misi look pretty fast on defense? How's Chris Johnson doing this year?
Look at Pitt and Pat's, Giants formula. A defense that creates turnovers and dictates the offense. A sound running game with the ability to make plays in the passing game when needed.
This team is marinating my friends... and the finished product over the next few years will be flavorful, even by the Angry Cornrow's standard.
SO LET IT BE WRITTEN! SO LET IT BE DONE!

bobby, as far as I'm concerned, this team is right on course this season after 7 games. I expected the charge to come in the 2nd half anyway. I'm very happy with how the team is progressing. Do I think we are complete yet? No, but I think we will be more complete by the end of the year.
Posted by: Mark in Toronto | November 04, 2010 at 12:39 PM
I'm not sure why everyone think we need 11 wins to get in. Last year the jets got in with 9-7. You never know until mid december.

Maybe Ireland didn't want Moss because he didn't have a chance to interview him about his mom. Nothing wrong with beating the hell out of your girlfriend just don't let your mom be a ho.
Posted by: SexyRexy | November 04, 2010 at 12:43 PM
Offensively we have the power to move the ball yet seriously lack the explosion to blow anyone away. Even poor defenses.
Yet we turn away Moss. Last I checked beggars cant be choosy. Especially a dumpster diving player acquisitioning regime like us. We turn away Moss and sign Nate Ness.
Ness what cut because he was roasted like chestnuts over an open fire last week. There's absolutely no figuring this regime out.
Must admit though, Ness didnt berate the catered food last week. Although his former team did toss him out with the rest of the scraps this week.

The only way I see us making the playoff is to go on a 7 game win streak right now. This would place our record at 10-3 with only 2 games left to play.
