Pennington: 'Now it's time to roll ...'

Chad Pennington just got done talking to the media at Dolphins camp. That's what the Miami Dolphins starting quarterback does every Wednesday around this time, so yes, you should know by now that Pennington is the starter.

He got a text from coach Tony Sparano Tuesday, asking when he was coming to work. Pennington texted back, saying he expected to be in by 10 a.m. Then he asked if Sparano needed him earlier. The coach said, "sure, a little sooner."

"I'm on my way," Pennington texted back.

After meeting with the coach for 45 minutes, he was returned to the job as the Dolphins starter. Pennington left the facility and took his dog to the groomer, which also conveniently gave Sparano an opportunity to speak with Chad Henne about being benched.

Then Pennington returned around 11 a.m.

"Chad and I talked for about an hour, got teary-eyed because we have a good relationship and we're good friends," Pennington said. "And it's a situation that's not fair. I've been there before. I've been benched when it wasn't really my fault. I understand every emotion he has and I understand everything he feels. He has every right to feel everything he has. We talked about it.

"I told him he needs to be ready to play. I made sure in the practice and the scripts we have, he gets some reps, because you're never sure what's going to happen. Just like he had to get ready to play three games in last year. It was a tough day for both of us, probably one of the hardest days for me as a professional."

All that behind them, Pennington can now get down to business.

"But now, it's time to roll," Pennington said. "It's time to focus on winning a football game."

Pennington replaces a player who threw for 1,900 yards the first eight games of the season. But the Miami offense lacked something -- aside from touchdowns, wiseguys. Pennington hopes to bring part of what has been missing.

"I just think as an offense, we've got to make sure we create a spark," he said. "Offensive football is about energy, it's about momentum. It's about synergy. It's about a feeling you have. And none of that happens with stats, it's not a statistic you can throw at it. So we have to find a way to create sparks during games. And when there's a chance to stick a dagger in a team and take their heart out, we got to do it. And when there's a chance to make a big play and get our crowd involved, we've got to do that. It's really important our crowd comes and supports us and so our we. So we have to create sparks and create energy and feed off that."

The Dolphins haven't done that. It's hard and wrong to blame Henne for the offense failing to do that. That would mean this change was easy. It was not.

But it is a fact and so Pennington is hoping to avoid the kind of offensive offense we've seen part of the past eight games.

"Sometimes we get in our own way ... We miss a block, we miss a throw, we fall down on a route, we've gotten in our own way," he said. "I think that's a fair assessment and we need to clean those things up. Just play better team football and that takes championship individual performances."

thanks superPHIN, there are no more excuses by this, our chosen team. we, as fans, have a reason to hold them and the coaches accountable!

i really dont see how henning gets paid at all either, since his playcalling isnt worth a $h#t!!!!

I fell ya bro.
Hard to cheer about anything these last few days.
With each passing week, we move closer to canning Dan Henning!

What has Henne been avg? About 30 throws a game?

Pennington's shoulder will be toast after two weeks.

I wonder if Henning will go with Thigpen or back to Henne?

Watch him Tony, You're going to live or die by the Henning.

thx, andy, c! ct. is a beautiful state, usually leans towards the jets, i grew up in nyc, had relatives in ct.

I don't feel that the Ravens mopped the floor with our faces.
Probably just cleaned a window or two.
Stick a fork in me, I'm done.
Peace to all "true aqua blue" Dolphins fans.

goodnight guys. im done too, except one more thing....FIRE HENNING!!!!!

I wish we would have drafted Tebow, dolphins coached him in the senior college games. I know a lot of you dont like tebow, but i just got this feeling about him that he is going to become a big time qb in the future. His determination and focus, leadership and toughness is what next generation nfl qb's are gonna have to be like. Pennington cant do much worse than Henne did in the last 2-3 games. Henne was even dropping snaps last game on top of his tipped balls and poor escape running. Ask any cornerback or safety, he zeroes in on his target with his eyes but when the ball is thrown, its high, low or to the wrong side, not to mention many of his passes are wobbly, spirals. Why do people keep saying EASY schedule too, Tenessee is a real good team, best rb on offense, and pretty good defense. Coach Fisher has been around and is a sly fox. I hope Penny can lead this team to a change and get us back to winning games.GO MIAMI!

let the unrestlessness continue.........DIE HENNING!!!!Phin Out!!!!

mccreet, good comment! i thought tebow was perfect for the wildcat because of his size, and running ability. i agree, and said so in preseason.

It's a major growing pain, but getting rid of Dan Henning is a necessary evil. He was actually and realisically the biggest stop gap the Trifecta brought in. I'm sure they figured he'd be out the door by the time the team was ready to compete.

I was already crushed by the loss to Baltimore. Then the latest moves! GREAT, eight weeks into the season and we're still churning the roster.

I don't know what's worse? Loving the Dolphins or loving Women. They both SUCK!

Speaking of MOMENTUM...

After a turnover or big play, I love to say...

"Old Man Mo is changing Jerseys"

My wife hates it but it makes me feel really witty and cool!

Go Phins!

If I don't see a little more YAC from Marshall?

I'm going to have to give it up for ol skool Orande Gadsen!

Now dat was ma BoYY! Big lanky solid frame, excellent gait and big mits to catch the pill!

Go Phins!

Hey have you guys noticed?

Sparano wasn't Fn around with that whole "feed the wolf" thing!

He is feeding everyone to the WOLF!

Go Phins!

Like your guys opinion on Harbsugh from Stanford?

I think this cat is the next big thing in coaching. He has beengreat at talent eval and offensive game planning. He has some serious swagger and NFL chops?

Harbaugh HC
Pennington OC
Nolan DC

Go Phins!

Harbaugh, my bad

This is about strong and decisive leadership. Tony Sparano scores high in my book for making this tough decision. He is in the best position to assess what changes need to be made to move the team forward, and he did what he felt needed to be done. He accepted responsibility and holds himself accountable. Let's give him credit.

this move is BS.. henne didnt do that bad guys, alot of his passes get dropped and then hes forced to try and do something, henning should be gone because these stupid plays hes calling is the reason the fins are losing.. henne was very quick to throw dump passes, the only question now is if they were called that way since the fins usually do well with running with the ball or was it henne... pennington will show us i guess... i think this is a huge step back for the fins.. my only hope is that when henne gets back in this doesnt effect him and makes him a better player

touchdown miami!

last game henne fumbled 2 snaps from the center. his throw to an open bess at the one brought bess away from the goal line so the dback could recover. henne's very high throw to marshall over the middle was also throwntoo hard with no touch. those passes can get a receiver killed(where lb's roam).the result was an int. on a 3rd and half a yd henne looks like he's throwing a live animal as he misses a wide open fasano. henne's 3rd int for the day occurs when he throws to the wrong side of a covered bess. henne really needed to win the position which he never did.

i would have liked to see thygpen start but penny is going to play great with marshall an bess!!
who wants to bet Miami goes 6-2 the rest of the way??!? any takers??? i have been saying if were not going deep with tgat arm Penny should be playing!! hes got a 70% completion rate! thats sick!!! bess an marshall will have 8 catches tgis weekend and ronnie brown comes back to life!!! 80 yards and a TD for brown

If this doesn`t work all eyes will go right to Dan Henning...

this move to start penne speaks volumes about what the regime now thinks of henne's future. he's being replaced by a 34 year old qb with arm trouble. another miss on a early round pick. ireland/sparano/henning probably are lost without parcells. i like thigpen better but penne is probably a bridge to thigpen.

What we have learned: Henne has strong arm. That's it. He can't "pass" like a great QB. More importantly... he can't read a defense (meat on his arm, meat in his head).

As an offense we have scored (11) touchdowns

The average decent NFL team (22)

A change was needed! Maybe Penny can provide a bit of confidence for the offense. Titans defense is pretty good, this should be a good test. I predict (3) touchdowns for the offense.

With Penny - a good chance to win
With Henne - a good chance to lose

With Henning - A good chance to lose
With Henning AND Sparano - a great chance to lose

They can have the QB fall on the sword for them if they want but they are the REAL problem. Playoffs? Get real, getting Marshall & Dansby got to everyone's heads. This wasn't a playoff team regardless of the QB. The talent needed just isn't there. Installing Penny will wind up setting this franchise back AGAIN!

TOO many holes & now possibly add QB to that list? We are the Bills of the 2000's & 80' Cardinals. Tenn is gonna rush Penny like mad men. They are physical. I wouldn't be shocked to see Penny out of this game with a bum shoulder.

Be wary what you wish for, Penny is NOT the answer. He may win a game or two & everyone will have their man crush again. But, Penny would not have beat Pitt, Balt or the Jets. Enjoy the medicority that is upon us all, thats the best it'll be.

2012 Henne will leave Miami via free agency, become the 2nd coming of Terry Bradshaw, again the Dolphins organization will look like total morons, and as fans again we'll feel like the play of Benny Sapp!

Hard headed fans who think Pennington offers us a better chance to win remember this:

NFL DC's are dusting off the 2008 Ravens/Dolphins playoff game as we speak.

Why do you think Chad Pennington began 2009 0-3? It's the 2008 Ravens/Dolphins playoff's tape fools!

Titans Headcoach:

Did you get that 2008 Ravens/Dolphins playoff tape?

Titans Defensive Coordinator:

Yes sir, you know I did!

” No one here thinks your an expert on Pennington’s health so quit with the propaganda.”

OH Phinmanski . i’m sorry , i didn’t realize penny having 3 shoulder surgeries on the same shoulder was propaganda , LMFAO !! By the way i have been dealing with the male body and it’s parts for a long time . I deal with it every day because that’s my business to shoot man juice in my boyfriend Tim/Knights face. I know a heck of alot more than you do regarding that matter.

Henne has a little more development to do. He will be back and be even better. Sure, there have been dropped balls and other problems that are not Henne's fault. However, the team is loosing confidence in itself and needs a change or spark. The psychological part of this game is as important as the physical one.
This will be a good learning experience for Henne.

Go Fins....

We need players like Terry Kirby to replace Cobbs on ST, Troy Vincent for S. Smith & Zach for Crowder to make the postseason. Do you think any of them would consider playing out the rest of the year?

God!! It's sad Sparano actually tries to convince people this is a playoff team. What's worse is the fans who believe him.

: a property of a moving body that the body has by virtue of its mass and motion and that is equal to the product of the body's mass and velocity; broadly : a property of a moving body that determines the length of time required to bring it to rest when under the action of a constant force or moment

2: strength or force gained by motion or by a series of events
Examples of MOMENTUM
The company has had a successful year and hopes to maintain its momentum by introducing new products.
The movie loses momentum toward the end.

Definition Of DAN HENNING:

"Elastic Collision"

A collision between two Pool balls is a good example of an almost totally elastic collision. In addition to momentum being conserved when the two balls collide, the sum of kinetic energy before a collision must equal the sum of kinetic energy after:

Dan Henning = 1 poolball, Momentum = 1 poolball.

DAN "No Momentum" HENNING = DAN "Nomo" HENNING!

We all in on this one! I don't know how I feel right now. All I know is we have to beat the Titans on Sunday. That's it. Playoffs, season, future of the franchise, coaching staff all comes down to Sunday. Where is Don Shula when you need him? But Cameron Wake is a beast!

Yes Dolphans, we have been ditched and the towiing service called(Pennington's Towing) has a sverely flawed winch!!!

The biggest problem I have with this move now is if you are going to do this now, Pennington really should have been the starter from day one, especially since all accounts I read(correct me if I am wrong) had him outperforming Henne in camp. Now, Henne's confidence is hurt badly, and we are in a hole to make the playoffs. Pennington might have won us a game or two that we lost because I don't think you can say Henne really won us any games.

Had Penny been the starter from day one, the shoulder would have fallen apart by now and a change would be made by now anyway.

Get ready to see plenty of all out blitzes with Pennington's pop gun arm!!!

Dying Breed,

I agree, but to bench Henne now I think hurts his confidence. At 4-4 and having lost to everyone above us in the standings, our chance for the playoffs is slim. I don't think Pennington should have played unless Henne was injured. I just think Henne should have played the last 8 games for further evaluation to determine if we are going to draft a Qb or sign or trade for someone like Vick or McNabb.

I know Henne isnt Marino or Peyton but HENNING is responsible for at least 50% of his bad play. 25% I account to dropped balls and tipped balls becoming picks. The other 25% is on Henning himself.

I just feel Henne is being made to unfairly fall on the sword for DAN HENNING!

Brad ... that is just moronic my man. Overall first pick? Seriously you believe that?

BoulderFinFan ... "Deaf in his ear"? where the Hell else would Sparano be deaf? In his eye?

Some serious idiots on this board.

I am thinking that this is a temporary move to eventually become Thigpen, unless CP goes on a winning tear. In the AFC 10-6 isn't looking good enough to be a playoff record, so we can only afford one more loss. Jets will lose to Cleveland this week (just a hunch).

I think it's very telling on a few things. Jets Coach makes a bad comment about Carpenter (the LB version) and he gets waived. TO makes a comment about Jason Allen being a liability, and he gets benched, then waived. Ed Reed makes a comment about how easy it is to read Henne (and he is RIGHT. Been saying that all season to my son as we watch the game.) and now he is benched.

And No One seems to be mentioning the very telling comment CP made about "being benched before when it wasn't his fault". That statement is very insightful as to what CP thinks the problem is. Not Henne, but the OC and the "playmakers".

Still say of the qb's on our roster, Henne represents the best chance to win.

Pennington and his pop gun arm invites all out blitzes and Thigpen will take us to the highest of heights only to drop us to the lowest of lows. All in the span of 4 qtrs of football.

Defenses respect Henne's arm enough not to constantly all out blitz and he's more consistent than Thigpen's great highs and plummeting lows.

I believe 10-6 will get a team a wildcard. It will just come down to tiebreakers.

The reason I believe this is because in the NFL it seems most injuries come early and late in the season. Ive never seen 10-6 fail to get a team into the playoffs unless beaten out by the tiebreaker system.

Second year quarterbacks aren't usualy stellar. I take this as a wake up call for Henne. However, I'd draft a quarterback next year to cover my ass. Next year is make or break for Henne.

If you think 10-6 is good enough for a Wildcard with Balt/Pitt NY/NE already having tie breakers & a 2 game lead, you're insane. 11-5. Fact is Division went out the window when they lost to NE & wild card was lost when they lost to Pitt. 4 in conference losses already??? Lose this week & is cemented but as of right now, Miami's playoff chances are slim to none...on life support.

They don't belong in the playoffs and would be better served not making it. They need top end talent in the draft or to put themselves in a position to slide down & acquire more picks.

sod. yes. penni and thigpen were better than henne this tc.

Joe Shmoe,

What makes you think one of these teams doesnt sink to a 10-6 record? The Jets are notorious late season swooners. The Colts and our own very late season swoon allowed them into the playoffs last season.

Youre making this prediction based on midseason performances. In the NFL all kind of crazy things can happen within a short 4 game span. You know this.

penni was the qb in 2008 when the phins won* 7 of the last 8. and he is healthy again btw.

Joe Shmoe,

Even the Steelers had about the same record at this time last season and missed the playoffs entirely.

Also last early last season it was looking like a Jets-Giant SB. The Giants missed the playoffs entirely. Still to early to say whats what. Strange things do happen in this league.

my crystal bong says that this was the plan all along to get penni healthy for the stretch run and to give henne some snaps early on and to at least try and get a handful of wins.. the crystal bong also says that the phins would be 6-2 now if penni was the starter.lol

Speaking of 2008 dont forget the Ravens(playoffs) also came up with the perfect formula to make Pennington eat dirt.

Does the 2009 0-3 start tell you anything DC's around the league learned from that game? Didnt Penny start the season "perfectly healthy" in 2009?

db. just like they did to henne last week. right?..lol.. and marshall will explode w/ yac now with the qb change. watch.

Yes 2watt, seems youre thinking just like a "2watt" light bulb. Youve really played the tape all the way thru!

Wishful thinking here. But maybe the reason they went with pennington is because the offence we are currently running fits him better. And if sporano was to fire henning right now the season is basically over. But if Pennington can come in and run hennings offence better and get us to the playoffs and let henne ride the pine and learn a lil more from watching pennington. Then in the offseanon FIRE henning and bring in someone with an offence that fits hennes style a little better maybe he could become the QB we were thinking he was going to be for us in the future.

db,the team was over whelmed"spell" in atl. the 1st game and 41 min.of ball control and 23pt's against the sb colts in game 2. the d collapsed, and it was 6-6 at 1/2 time @ san dog.in game 3, henne threw the killer pix 6 btw in that game. fyi

2 watt,

Marshall will now find it a little more difficult to catch the short passes. With Penny's "2 watt" arm db's will lie in wait to jump the short routes now. Plus the offense will see more "all out blitzes" than ever before. No DC is overly concerned about Penny beating their defense deep!

db. i am here to make sure that you become a more intelligent football fan. you and others.. u'r welcome btw.
