Pennington: 'Now it's time to roll ...'

Chad Pennington just got done talking to the media at Dolphins camp. That's what the Miami Dolphins starting quarterback does every Wednesday around this time, so yes, you should know by now that Pennington is the starter.

He got a text from coach Tony Sparano Tuesday, asking when he was coming to work. Pennington texted back, saying he expected to be in by 10 a.m. Then he asked if Sparano needed him earlier. The coach said, "sure, a little sooner."

"I'm on my way," Pennington texted back.

After meeting with the coach for 45 minutes, he was returned to the job as the Dolphins starter. Pennington left the facility and took his dog to the groomer, which also conveniently gave Sparano an opportunity to speak with Chad Henne about being benched.

Then Pennington returned around 11 a.m.

"Chad and I talked for about an hour, got teary-eyed because we have a good relationship and we're good friends," Pennington said. "And it's a situation that's not fair. I've been there before. I've been benched when it wasn't really my fault. I understand every emotion he has and I understand everything he feels. He has every right to feel everything he has. We talked about it.

"I told him he needs to be ready to play. I made sure in the practice and the scripts we have, he gets some reps, because you're never sure what's going to happen. Just like he had to get ready to play three games in last year. It was a tough day for both of us, probably one of the hardest days for me as a professional."

All that behind them, Pennington can now get down to business.

"But now, it's time to roll," Pennington said. "It's time to focus on winning a football game."

Pennington replaces a player who threw for 1,900 yards the first eight games of the season. But the Miami offense lacked something -- aside from touchdowns, wiseguys. Pennington hopes to bring part of what has been missing.

"I just think as an offense, we've got to make sure we create a spark," he said. "Offensive football is about energy, it's about momentum. It's about synergy. It's about a feeling you have. And none of that happens with stats, it's not a statistic you can throw at it. So we have to find a way to create sparks during games. And when there's a chance to stick a dagger in a team and take their heart out, we got to do it. And when there's a chance to make a big play and get our crowd involved, we've got to do that. It's really important our crowd comes and supports us and so our we. So we have to create sparks and create energy and feed off that."

The Dolphins haven't done that. It's hard and wrong to blame Henne for the offense failing to do that. That would mean this change was easy. It was not.

But it is a fact and so Pennington is hoping to avoid the kind of offensive offense we've seen part of the past eight games.

"Sometimes we get in our own way ... We miss a block, we miss a throw, we fall down on a route, we've gotten in our own way," he said. "I think that's a fair assessment and we need to clean those things up. Just play better team football and that takes championship individual performances."

i beg to differ on that assesment, and you will remember this discussion by 1/2 time this week and you'll say to your wife.. dang wifey.. that b!tch 2 watt on the mh board was f'n rightall along!!!..lol

OHFINFAN,

If you noyiced Sparano "recontructed" the offensive line to better suit Henne. He envisioned still being able to run with some effectiveness but wanted better pass protection to allow Henne just a little more time to look downfield.

Last season's oline was tooled more for Penny. It was definitely built to run more and pass less because of Penny's bum shoulder. What good does an offensive line built to be able to pass more does Penny? Probability is the bum shoulder wont hold up long enough for it anyway. Plus the bum shoulder invites more all out blitzes.

I wish you guys could see the total picture Im seeing. You guys are leaving out a lot of very important details about this team in your evaluations.

IN THE CHAD.P CONTRACT IT SAYS ,IF HE LEAPS FROM BACK UP AQB TO A STARTING QB HIS SALARY WILL GUMP FROM 2.5 MILLION TO ................5.75 MILLION .........SO CHAD.P IS MAKING 5.75 MILLION THIS YEAR .

MARSHALL TALKED W/COACH SPARANO ABOUT SWITCHING HENNE TO PENNE .

NEXT SUNDAY, YOIU WILL SEE MARSHALL TD FOR SURE .

2 watt,

This isnt about a competition about who's right or wrong. Im a very frustrated Dolphan too. I wanna see our team win as much as the next guy. I'm just trying to make sure I leave no stone unturned while trying to look at the "whole picture" not just one or two parts.

You have to envision how well the parts work together. A 400 hp engine is a great engine. Still you cant put it in a Volkswagon Beetle engine compartment.

ALoco,

This switch costs the Dolphins an additional $3.25 million. Thats why I've tried to tell fans thinking this is a 1-2 game switch it's for as long as Penny's bum shoulder doesnt fall apart.

Penny isnt being paid an additional $3.5 million to only play 1-2 games. Thats ridiculous to assume.

Yes he restructure the line. Prob is he didnt get a new OC. And If pennington has the time that henne has had he can pick def apart with the short stuff they are calling right now. And pennys shoulder dont have to make it thru a 16 game season. Maybe 9 or 10 games at best he can make it thru that if hes not getting knocked down every play. As fart as blitzes Penny has seen every blitze known to man he can read it and get rid of the ball a heck of alot faster than henne has

OHFINFAN,

DC's are going to make sure Penny doesnt have as much time. That's why I stated we'll begin seeing more "all out blitzes." There isnt a DC in this league overly concerned about CP making them pay with the deep throw for the all out blitzes. Get it?

DYING, THE CONTRACT IS A CONTRACT, (( IF CHAD.P IS NAMED A STARTER EVEN ONE GAME HIS SALARY SHOULD BE 5.75 FOR THE THAT YEAR ))) IT'S VERY CLEAR .

THE FINS ARE NOT PAYING A LOT ANY WAY SINCE HENN'S CONTRACT IS.....600,000

SAFETIES WILL CREEP UP AND THERE WILL BE A WHOLE LOT LESS OPERATING ROOM SHORT. DEFENSES WILL LIE IN WAIT TO JUMP SHORT ROUTES ON cp'S WEAKER SHORT THROWS.

Also, how many sacks or qb hits will it be before CP lands hard on the bum shoulder and is out again. Isnt that exactly what happened after the 2009 0-3 start? Deja vu!

PFT JUST REPORTING THE CHAD .P GETTING A RAISE TO 5.75 MILLION AS I SAID EARLY DYING

You guys are probably saying all the same exact things Jet fans were saying about Pennington before the Jets finally cutbait. This has been Penny's CAREER track record.

Why do you guys think somethings gonna magically become different when his ENTIRE career has been marred in this MUCK?

ALSO ,THE METTING BETWEEN THE 2 CHAD AFTER THE NEWS BROKE WAS VERY SAD AND TEARS WERE SHED

Yea i get your point. But I also know that you do not have to have a cannon for an arm to beat a all out blitz. Nobody throws the ball 50 yards in the air on an all out blitz. There just isnt time for recievers to get 50 yards downfield. they throw it quickly about 25 maybe 30 yards and it turns into a deep play because of the blitz. Penny can throw the ball 30-35 yards. Its 35+ that he just can do

This organization and most its fans always get bam-boozled because we so badly wanna believe in all of the wrong things. Then we finally wake up to realize that we've been had again.

When will we learn?

I don't think this is the end of Henne being the future for the Phins. I think if you read between the lines, it tells us where this "Lack of Execution" is coming from that the coaches talk about after every loss. The OC is feeling the heat and hearing the comments, and what this shows is, the QB has not been properly executing his game plan. If Pennington comes in and makes it work, this proves it is not the OC. Do you think Henning isn't going to do what he can to save his @ss.

Henne is not properly reading the defense, that is what I have been saying since game 3. The line is giving him good protection and all he can do is check down. Henning is saying, if the QB makes the right reads, my play calling will work. This will be the litmus test.

If Pennington is successful, that doesn't set this team back. If Henne is a true professional and wants to learn, he will understand the differences between what he was doing and what CP does to make it work. Sometimes you can't see the forest for the trees and this gets him out of the trees to understand. Next year, you go back to Henne and all of these mis-reads and lack of decision making may be corrected and Miami has their long term answer.

The other thing that can't be overlooked is the leadership. CP is a leader and this will not only help the offense, but the defense will probably be more inspired too, because these guys are pros and no one wants to be the weak link. I really believe, that we are going to see what the Phins have been capable of all year. If not, then just go back to Henne and maybe you got his attention.

I am not saying that i think that Penny is going to be our saviour. Im just saying with henning calling plays the only shot we have at the playoffs is with penny. I really would like a new OC and henne under center. But that is not an option right now.

with Penny in there, DB's will press more, safeties up. DB's will sit on the shorter routes they know are coming. The problem is the offense, not the QB. Sure Penne might be more accurate as Henne is still learning. BUT, Penny coming in doesn't change the offense. Without Henne, the safeties don't even have to really wonder where the ball is going. There is no threat of deep passes. Not only this, his balls in intermediate range will take longer to get there than Henne's. More reaction time will lead to INt's.

Penny might throw some deep balls but they'll hang as they've always hung. Safeties will have time to recover on a play even if they are playing up. It's gonna be ugly folks, ugly.

OHFINFAN,

Guys will be lying in wait for the short passes. Seems you dont get it. Pennington's pop gun arm totally eliminates any respect whatsoever of the ball being thrown deep. The short ares will be totally congested becuase of this.

Joe Shmoe,

YOU ARE GETTING IT BROTHER! THATS THE BLUEPRINT FROM THE 2008 PLAYOFF GAME THAT TOTALLY SHUT CP DOWN. THATS WHAT IM TRYING TO SHOW EVERYONE BUT THEY ARE TRYING TO TREAT IT HAS IF THAT GAME NEVER HAPPENED.

2008 RAVENS/DOLPHINS GAME IS OH SO IMPORTANT. THATS THE BLUEPRINT THIS OFFENSE WILL NOW SEE!!!

Dyingbreed, your last post is 100% spot on and is exactly what I said in my last post. DB's will be up, pressing. Balls will take longer to get to their intended location. Not only will this allow WR's to get lit up, it will cause more int's. We are gonna see check down heaven.

With Penny in there, Fisher is gonna blitz the sh*t outta him. Ronnie & Ricky will have a big game.....catching dump offs. You thought Henne was king check down? HA

And your saying that isnt Exactly what has been going on lately??because i havent seen a deep pass completed since the first play of the season. Thats all everyone has been saying for weeks. Miami hasnt tried to get the ball downfield. So what is the prob with penny in there. Nobody was afraid of our deep passing game in the first place!!

Joe Shmoe, seems you try and pull the vails from over the fans eyes here and they'll fight you to the death! I dont wanna be decieved. I wnna see the truth even if it does hurt.

Even though the truth hurts its still far better than being decieved. Sooner or later the truth will rear up despite of our persistent denials.

OHFINFAN,

The only reason why there is some limited short and intermediate passing room is because safeties have to play back just a little farther in respect of Henne's arm. With that threat nearly totally eliminated guess what the safties do, guess what the even less operating room does to the passing game?

Also remeber Marshall's still going to be doubled and sometimes tripled because of Hartlines inconsistent play. Wth will CP change when these things are happening?

ONLY IF CP HAD A FEARED ARM COULD HE CHANGE THINGS. CP ONLY SHRINKS THE FIELD MORE!

He will find the open reciever and put the ball where it needs to be. When we get a new OC Henne should be the guy. But until then he has shown that he is just not the right fit for the Offence we are runnig

For me it only hurts more when in denial seeing the unexpected truth slowly unfold before my very unexpecting eyes. At least when I know the truth it does sort of cushions the blow.

OHFINFAN,

Noone's saying Penny wont complete a pass. The problem is it wont be often enough to produce a consistently efficient offense. Fighting the truth wont make it go away buddy. Sorry.

Dying and Joe,
You talk about the safties and DB's playing up with CP in, what do you think has been happening the last couple of games. Look at the film, 8 in the box everytime. that is why we have no running game. They are crowding the line on Henne because he can't or won't go downfield anyway.

You don't have to hit 50 yard bombs to back off the safties and the LB's. If you can consistently hit 15 - 20 yard routes, they will be back in coverage, and then you suddenly have running room. the other thing is where you put the ball for the receiver to catch it. When the WR comes out of his break, he should be looking at the ball, see if that doesn't happen now. Everyone arguing over whether the ball that went off Marsall's hands and was intercepted, if he should have sacrificed himself and made the catch, was irrelevant. If you are going to take your receiver over the middle with Ray Lewis out there, unless you are thebeneficiary on his life insurance, you keep the ball low. Two reasons, one is he doesn't get killed, he can protect himself, the second is, if he doesn't catch it, it doesn't get intercepted.

A lot of this is basic NFL IQ stuff. If you throw long, it is better to overthrow and not underthrow where the DB will be. If you throw over the middle on a crossing route, keep it low, because there are always safties behind the receiver for the int. If it is a sideline route, throw to the outside so it is either caught or incomplete because the DB is on the inside. This is basic stuff that Henne was not executing.

Get his attention, show him it can work, and then hopefully he grows from there.

DyingBreed. Are you satisfied with our offence thru the first 8 games?? I am Not. I know we have alot more talent than we did the last several years. and it just isnt showing. Something had to be done. it prob should have been signing moss and letting henne go deep. But that just isnt happening. So the other option is put in penny and see if he can provide some offence. And you disagree. So what is it that you think would work? or just keep things the same?

Phinfrock. I couldnt agree more

Home Loss Sunday Equals:

Ross loses homefan attendance completely for rest of the season.

Give Up Hennings Head After Home Loss Equals:

Fan Attendance goes back up no matter what our final regular season record is.

It'll be like a SB victory to finally have HENNING'S Head!

Phinrock "You talk about the safties and DB's playing up with CP in, what do you think has been happening the last couple of games. Look at the film, 8 in the box everytime. that is why we have no running game. They are crowding the line on Henne because he can't or won't go downfield anyway."

Do you REALLY think this will change with Pennington in the game? Man, some of you guys are in for a RUDE awakening. You tend to forget that Henning & Sparano have CEMENTED to Henne that in pre-snap reads, if they are in cover 2, DON'T THROW Deep. If you haven't heard from Sparano & Henning, thats what teams are doing to Miami. OUR GAME PLAN ISN'T DIVERSE ENOUGH to get teams out of that coverage. We get dictated to, not vice versa. The Qb under center WON'T change the philosophy! Maybe Penny defies their wishes but DON'T Count on it.

With that said, I do expect a spark for a game or two because of the change. I don't see it lasting, saving the season, or getting them to the playoffs. Afterall the QB doesn't play defense or ST which is a BIGGER issue than the QB play @ this point.

Everybody wants Henning gone! including the team and sporano. The prob is fire him now and change the offence and we are throwing out any chance of makimg the playoffs. Change QBS and at least there is a chance of playoffs. if it dont work then and only then we fire henning. Either way he has to go at the end of the year

Ladies and genltemen... our new Head Coach in waiting...
Mr Chad Penningon.... THANK YOU!!!

by the way, if you are a betting man, the Dolphins are FAVORED at home.......

how many bombs has henne thrown in 8 games..?..... 1.. and it was under thrown to marshall who had to slow down and was soon tackled afterwards.. henne can't throw deep... case closed.,.no touch on short paxxes and no touch on long paxxes.. next !

2watt, that's an assinine statement. He threw deep to Marshall in Buffalo and he dropped it. Left it short, like all good qb's do, and left his guy to make a play. Marhsall wiffed.

Min- Threw a PERFET deep ball to Marshall on the first play of the game & caught it.

NYJ - Threw plenty of deeper sideline passes (backshoulder) to Bess & Marshall ALL GAME

Packers - Threw a couple of deep balls, one which Hartline drew a PI call on Woodson

Pats - Threw a nice medium back shoulder/jump ball throw to Wallace who made the catch.

Ravens - Threw a nice deep sideline pass to Hartline who drew a PI call and came down with the catch.

If you're gonna be critical, be accurate. When it's there, he throws them. No one wants to hold Henning & Sparano accountable for cementing in his brain to not take a shot if it ain't there. Marshall, Henning & Sparano have said teams are taking it away. Why do you expect them to throw it if he's being asked not to?

This offense is NOT designed for the QB to make plays, it's based on not making mistakes.

tony made the correct decision. henne throws int's because of inexperience, penny will throw some because of week velocity passes. henne won't throw the deep-ball and penny can't throw throw the deep-ball, so all things being equal, penny is the right decision. it will provide that spark and may also ignite a competitive fire under henne, penny will take command of the offense and who's to say henne won't come in for a play or two to throw or practice his deep-ball(go ahead and laugh, but it wouldn't surprise me in the least considering the wild-cat and some of the wierd times pat white was brought). this move create uncertainty game planning us from week to week and why not try moving starks in and out of tackle, the defense was spectacular the first two games when with starks in the middle and maybe the back-up defensive end could hold his own now. this could even create more problems. also if we can replace henne with penny, why not replace hartline with wallace, it can't get much worse then hartline, and we just might establish another big threat at reciever to compliment marshall. go fins.

those are 30 yard outs that penny hits all of the time. i'm talking about anything 35-45+. should have been clearer but penny is deadly in the 25-30 range. watch.

HENNE IS NOT OUR PROBLEM !!!! OUR PROBLEM IS HENNING,HE'S GAME CALLING IS PREDICTABLE !!!!!
GO DOLPHINS !!!!!!!

Many are missing the obvious. If Henne played Sunday and lost the stadium would be empty next game.

If you cant win at home why go to the game as expensive as tickets are.

Next Penningtons salary doubles as he named starter. He gives Miami the best chance to win. If Penne had played early with out a good pass protecting line he would be risking it all. Now with 8 games gone and the toughest pass rushing defenses done, Penne gives the Fins a real chance of making the play offs.

He killed Miami enough times in the past with less weapons than what he has now. Just with down the field marches. Guaranteed he can use Ricky and Ronnie and sell the play action too.

He threw the longest pass in the Pre Season to Marshall and it dropped right in like a baseball into a outfielders glove. That is what Penne gives Miami. He also can see no reciever open in 3 seconds he is running up field for positive yards. Henne had 4 seconds and could not use his feet to make a play.
When they grabbed him for a loss in Minnesota he easily could have moved a second earlier and ran for a first down.

Penne will run forward and hit a reciever just before the line of scrimmage while Penne was trying NOT to get hit or make a mistake. Not making a play is what they call lack of IT.

He must make a play when there is nothing there.

Great Move Sparano and Ross. Ross is a businessman and knows Pennington will fill the seats with a win, sell more product and give Miami hope. I was going to play a tournament for the Florida Million on Sunday instead I will now play on Saturday at the Mardi Gras and watch the game Sunday.

Thank you Mr Ross as I am sure you listened to your fans.

yea! let push to draft andrew luck!!!!

Get ready for 8 in the box,run game will suffer even more. Henne is not the problem.
