Pennington: 'Now it's time to roll ...'

Chad Pennington just got done talking to the media at Dolphins camp. That's what the Miami Dolphins starting quarterback does every Wednesday around this time, so yes, you should know by now that Pennington is the starter.

He got a text from coach Tony Sparano Tuesday, asking when he was coming to work. Pennington texted back, saying he expected to be in by 10 a.m. Then he asked if Sparano needed him earlier. The coach said, "sure, a little sooner."

"I'm on my way," Pennington texted back.

After meeting with the coach for 45 minutes, he was returned to the job as the Dolphins starter. Pennington left the facility and took his dog to the groomer, which also conveniently gave Sparano an opportunity to speak with Chad Henne about being benched.

Then Pennington returned around 11 a.m.

"Chad and I talked for about an hour, got teary-eyed because we have a good relationship and we're good friends," Pennington said. "And it's a situation that's not fair. I've been there before. I've been benched when it wasn't really my fault. I understand every emotion he has and I understand everything he feels. He has every right to feel everything he has. We talked about it.

"I told him he needs to be ready to play. I made sure in the practice and the scripts we have, he gets some reps, because you're never sure what's going to happen. Just like he had to get ready to play three games in last year. It was a tough day for both of us, probably one of the hardest days for me as a professional."

All that behind them, Pennington can now get down to business.

"But now, it's time to roll," Pennington said. "It's time to focus on winning a football game."

Pennington replaces a player who threw for 1,900 yards the first eight games of the season. But the Miami offense lacked something -- aside from touchdowns, wiseguys. Pennington hopes to bring part of what has been missing.

"I just think as an offense, we've got to make sure we create a spark," he said. "Offensive football is about energy, it's about momentum. It's about synergy. It's about a feeling you have. And none of that happens with stats, it's not a statistic you can throw at it. So we have to find a way to create sparks during games. And when there's a chance to stick a dagger in a team and take their heart out, we got to do it. And when there's a chance to make a big play and get our crowd involved, we've got to do that. It's really important our crowd comes and supports us and so our we. So we have to create sparks and create energy and feed off that."

The Dolphins haven't done that. It's hard and wrong to blame Henne for the offense failing to do that. That would mean this change was easy. It was not.

But it is a fact and so Pennington is hoping to avoid the kind of offensive offense we've seen part of the past eight games.

"Sometimes we get in our own way ... We miss a block, we miss a throw, we fall down on a route, we've gotten in our own way," he said. "I think that's a fair assessment and we need to clean those things up. Just play better team football and that takes championship individual performances."

Home Says " Go Miami" !!!!!!!!!!!

never mind who will be the starting QB, as long as we don't get this pathetic secondary on track we won't win much games....and the allen/harris trade will NOT help

Doesn't NH have nice bridges? I will take it - all this road construction here is driving me nuts!!!

PISTOL,

I AGREE 100%!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pennington playing = More Wildcat plays.

Hey DC...You'll be the one eating humble pie on Monday morning!

Mark in Toronto- You say that Henne has a lot of yards passing. More then a lot of really good quarterbacks. But you know there is a big difference in those guys, and our guy. They all get the ball into the endzone!!! We can blame Henning all we want, he deserves a lot of it. But if we are going to blame Henning for Hennes inability to get the ball in the endzone, we have to give him credit for the pass plays between the 20 to the redzone(where we have been great) I know it's not Henne calling wildcat plays, but it's also not Henning that can't throw a simple fade route. lets just see what happens with Penne before everyone freaks out!

hahhaa, henne with no run game had difficulty. penne with no run game = BLOWOUT!

final score prediciton. Titans 172 Miami 3

I believe the size of Hennes head caused him to tip to the left.... which explains all the int's and imcompletes.

now thats how a starting QB is supposed to talk. well see if he can walk the walk...

While this move reeks of desperation, it might actually induce a needed spark to our stagnant offense. Especially, if Pennington improvizes at the line, and ignores Henning's sophmorish advice more often than not... At the very least, it will infuse a bit of leadership into our wayward offense, that is severely lacking in this regard.

This is nothing more than a short-term solution by a myopic coaching staff, who are justifiably in fear of losing their jobs.

Will this move stunt Henne's growth as a QB? Possibly, but it is not like he was being utilized properly by Henning, anyway. Could it lead to a few more victories this year? Sure. Is it really the long-term solution we desperately need? Not even close...

Bring in Cohwer, or someone of his caliber, and give them the keys to the car...

Tell me. Do any of you actually WATCH football games? Or do you get your wives or girlfriends to tell you what happened while you're baking cookies on Sundays?

HEY, my EX-GF's knew more about football than some of these CLOWNS!

Heck, an idiot could look at the game down by 16 in the 4th, with 7 mins left, on 2nd and long, see a play action and go...Why did they fake it?

What does Ricky Williams think about this switch??

This a bs move to save head office jobs. One more season of field goal fist pumps and that will be over.

Next news, Dolphins to trade away second rounders in perpetuity. They do better with trading the second rounder than keeping them.

If I was Ross right now I'd be searching for Parcells...

With a shotgun!

PARCELLS and IRELAND have literally BURNED Ross' $ from day one! (Wilford)

I love the offense!

- Dan Carpenter

Fccking bull shtt, Dyingbreed. It' like putting a hello kitty band-aid on a bullet hole.

TRIFECTA = EPIC FAIL

Seriously, I'm available!

- Jeff George

"HAHAHAHAHAHAHHA"

-Bill Parcells

And you wonder why I left. Rex Ryan or Tony Sporano. Lol

- Jason Taylor

Hell the future is always cloudy...they might not even get a collective contract in place before the 2011 season...this might be "IT" until 2012 (when the world ends according to the Mayan calendar).
Play Pennington and win NOW!

bess value goes up

DD, do oyu understand teh evolution of a young quarterback? Many make a lot of mistakes and have losing records in the beginning (Henne is 11-10 by the way) and then they start to learn from their mistakes, they progress, they get better. I don;t know how good Henne may or may not be. however, I see him complete passes non of qbs have been able to complete since Marino. He has obvious physical gifts. What this administration has done is robbed him of the chance to evolve - and I knwo he would have evolved further. how do I know this? because he evolved from last year. Our passing game was pathetic. Now it was 14th in the league. That is better than most. This is obviously not Henne's fault. If anything, he kept us in some games that we would have been blown out of. I beleive, in time, he would have figured it out.

Now we get to watch Penne with the ten minute long 15 yard passes. Am I the only one that remembers that he can't use the entire field to pass? he CANNOT complete an outside pass. He is easy to defend. Too easy.

He will probably get busted up during the game anyway. This is retardo world football.

it all a ruse.....coaches have found a way Carpenter can make 80 yard FGs with Penne ad the holder..... we're going to Dallas in February, you'll see.

I'm still a genius.

- The Tuna

Fans, don't worry, I'm working on sweet plays. Got a new one called 34 dive. Are we playing the Oilers this week?

- Henning

If I ever see that fat bttch parcells I will punch him right in his dcck sucker.

Coulda, shoulda, woulda have drafted M Ryan, J Flacco, but instead we draft guys with good characters and that's why the Fins will be playing for the Toilet Bowl.

did you know Al Harris excells at picking..... his nose?

Al Harris was money..... in 1986.

Mark in Toronto- I do understand that there are growing pains with young Qb's. That is part of the deal. Henne has moments where he is really good. But what troubles me is none of these moments happen when it matters, and I don't think that it had anything to do with development, as his deficiencies. With Henne I don't see it that's all. It doesn't make me less knowledgable, or less of a fan. It's just my opinion. I know that his body of work is only 20 games and that is a quick assesment, and not fair. But I think Penne gives us a better chance to win, and I think if you were to ask the players they would agree(off the record)

Armando,

Do yourself and all fans a favor and go to the front office and tell them they have no clue how to run a team.

Thanks.

That's too bad that Sparano did not benched Henning also.

penne is a real pro qb who commands the huddle and can sell play action. henne had a strong arm period. he didn't lead, couldnt throw a touch pass to save his ass, and wasnt receiver friendly. i'll take penne with a bad arm anyday over henne. parcells made it known that he was very disappointed in henne's development. penne will be a bridge to thigpen.

MARK ,DID YOU SEE THE MOVIE (( SEA OF LOVE )) W/AL PACINO ?

GOODMAN HIS NAME IN THE MOVIE WAS PENNE AND PACINO AT ONE POINT SAID ...(( IT'S NOT THE LOVE OR RESPECT PENNE,IT'S ABOUT HOW MUCH YOU AIR IT HOME PENNE ))

Home

Thanks for letting the Dolphins regime let them know

How the local Super Fan Thinks

Go Pennington!

Ocala Rob Rocks!

maybe signing Al Harris was just a secret way to obtain Grudens number....WE ARE SAFE!!Dallas here we come!!!!!

HOME

I love you, Man!

NH, I'm eating humble pie right now buddy. Look, when I'm wrong, I own up to it. I WAS WRONG! You guys were right.

You won the battle, but I fear you'll lose the war. Not to me, hell with me, I'm nobody. But the team, declining, that's the war.

Mark's right, Penne is a train wreck waiting to happen. Again, love the guy, but he's a stop gap, a depreciating talent (using language Mark understands, sorry). He's not soaring like Gold. He'll win a few games. Won't mean anything though. Won't be a starting point to grow on. Won't be anything that can be used next year. Won't bring any organization to a disorganized bunch. Won't do nothing.

Penne excelled during a year where we played the bottom of the barrel, and had an explosive run game. Now he's being asked to excel when our pass game is strong and we have the 3rd toughest schedule in the league.

NH, have you ever seen what happens when a Smart Car collides head on with a tractor trailer? Well, pay attention the next few weeks, that's what playing Penne will be like.

I think that too much is made of a QB's "Evolution"...

As a player, you either have the intangibles, talent, and leadership qualities of an elite QB, or you do not...

Sure, you can develop a talented player into an above average QB, over a few years... However, You can't teach someone to be as accurate as Dan Marino or Peyton Manning... or, as deft with their touch as a Joe Montana... or, to be a field general like Elway, etc.

Henne has talent, but he doesn't have true greatness...

This regime knows this, and as such are moving forward with a win-now mindset, as their jobs are on the line...

Joe Momma,

You're SUCH a child!! This isn't about who's right and who's wrong. Based on the regime's past decisions this will probably be a bad move too. So you're saying this is a good plan? And from your comments I also read that you're saying Henne is done for the year too? We'll see about that. And you're also saying if this doesn't work out then you want to see Thigpen? Sounds like you want a whole lot of things. And I forgot you are also going to draft a QB between the 3rd and 6th rounds next year too.

Let's be clear, I'm a Dolphins fan first and while I may not like this move, I'll be cheering for Pennington to win Sunday. I guess all I'm saying is, I don't know where this move leads us. I am adamant that I DO NOT want another high pick wasted on a quarterback again next year. We're not good enough and have too many ther holes to fill.

i really liked jason allen; he's better than harris, sapp and smith. dont understand that move?????

I told you on Sunday Armando: Its time to play Pennington, but you didn't AGREE...

SEASON IS OFFICIALLY DONE!!!!!

*****URGENT******

You guys missed it? Seriously!

Pennington just gave up the Ghost on this and you Henning Haters have it pegged.

In his interview, go back and read it or watch it.

Penn says QUOTE " I have been benched when it really wasn't my fault"

What does this tell you???

That Henne is being improperly coached, given a crappy game plan, has hand cuffs on and never really had their blessing?

Go back and read Pennington's presser and see if you got the same thing I got. Pennington is basically saying it's not Henne's fault. He could have said anything there but he chose those words?

Oh and that is a a bad ass lid Penn is sporting, gotta get me one.

Go Phins!

Penny does not need a rocket arm in this offensive scheme.
All he has to do is be accurate enough to hit his receivers in stride and they can run up the YAC...yards after catch!

I see Bess, Hartline & Fasano benefiting the most....oh yea, that Marshall guy will catch a few as well.

LMFAO! Great, first don't get me wrong, I LOVE Chad Pennington as a leader and he's also one of the classiest guys in the NFL.

With that being said it is abundantly clear that Sparano and Ireland are in the 'save our jobs' mode now and I hope they don't hurt the future of this franchise because of it.

Now, forget about any kind of run game for Ronnie and Ricky because we're about to see 8 men in the box on every play. Teams will test pennys arm and I hope he's up to the task. Also get ready for an enormous amount of short passes which probably isn't that different from what's been going on.

In closing the only way I can justify this move is by realizing that Dan the moron Henning never readjusted his playbook for Henne, a qb with a strong arm, but instead stayed with the Penny play book. Running and play action.

Dolphins make the playoffs or get close and Sparano could keep his job but then what? How are we getting better for the future by making a move like this? Looks like we'll be waiting for a long while now.

CRAIG, LET'S FORGET ABOUT EVERY THING ;

1-THIS IS THE ONLY MOVE THAT HAS ANY CHANCE TO SHAKE THE TEAM .
2-B.MARSHALL IS ON BOARD W/THAT MOVE

3-YOU CAN'T KEEP MISSING THE OPEN RECEIVER THEN COME TO SIDE LINE LAUGHING

4-WHAT DID YOU HAVE FOR DINNER TONIGHT ?

Home

What can I say?

Home, your the best!

SAPARNO SHOULD HAVE MIXE IT UP FROM THE START OF THE YEAR AS REED DOING IN PHI BETWEEN M.VICK AND COLBY

this coaching staff HAS lost it, now we go back to noodle arm, WE have accepted defeat this year and Harris*lmao*....can we see if peon deion is still interested in playing as well!!!!

GET GRUDEN - GET RESPECT!

This season is over just like the past 27 in a row.

If you need to develop a qb, he sucks. Either you can play or you can't! Let's bring back Cade McCown and keep developing him.

I fear Penny will be too effective and actually get us to 10-6.
Just shy of the playoffs, but good enough to save Tony's job....then what?

Pennington for offensive coordinator now!!!

Pennington/Henning...4 more years....4 more years !

Soiled :)

Can AL harris coach, maybe he can take over sparanos job in 2011

greg z, I didn't get a chance to make it for practice this year and I know you were there.

I've read your comments about Henne, what was your read on Pennington and Thigpen?

SOILED,

I AM COOKING SCALLOPS AND I WONDER IF YOU KNOW IF IT'S BETTER TO GRILL THE SCALLOPS W/CILANTRO OR DILL IS BETTER ?
