Pennington: 'Now it's time to roll ...'

Chad Pennington just got done talking to the media at Dolphins camp. That's what the Miami Dolphins starting quarterback does every Wednesday around this time, so yes, you should know by now that Pennington is the starter.

He got a text from coach Tony Sparano Tuesday, asking when he was coming to work. Pennington texted back, saying he expected to be in by 10 a.m. Then he asked if Sparano needed him earlier. The coach said, "sure, a little sooner."

"I'm on my way," Pennington texted back.

After meeting with the coach for 45 minutes, he was returned to the job as the Dolphins starter. Pennington left the facility and took his dog to the groomer, which also conveniently gave Sparano an opportunity to speak with Chad Henne about being benched.

Then Pennington returned around 11 a.m.

"Chad and I talked for about an hour, got teary-eyed because we have a good relationship and we're good friends," Pennington said. "And it's a situation that's not fair. I've been there before. I've been benched when it wasn't really my fault. I understand every emotion he has and I understand everything he feels. He has every right to feel everything he has. We talked about it.

"I told him he needs to be ready to play. I made sure in the practice and the scripts we have, he gets some reps, because you're never sure what's going to happen. Just like he had to get ready to play three games in last year. It was a tough day for both of us, probably one of the hardest days for me as a professional."

All that behind them, Pennington can now get down to business.

"But now, it's time to roll," Pennington said. "It's time to focus on winning a football game."

Pennington replaces a player who threw for 1,900 yards the first eight games of the season. But the Miami offense lacked something -- aside from touchdowns, wiseguys. Pennington hopes to bring part of what has been missing.

"I just think as an offense, we've got to make sure we create a spark," he said. "Offensive football is about energy, it's about momentum. It's about synergy. It's about a feeling you have. And none of that happens with stats, it's not a statistic you can throw at it. So we have to find a way to create sparks during games. And when there's a chance to stick a dagger in a team and take their heart out, we got to do it. And when there's a chance to make a big play and get our crowd involved, we've got to do that. It's really important our crowd comes and supports us and so our we. So we have to create sparks and create energy and feed off that."

The Dolphins haven't done that. It's hard and wrong to blame Henne for the offense failing to do that. That would mean this change was easy. It was not.

But it is a fact and so Pennington is hoping to avoid the kind of offensive offense we've seen part of the past eight games.

"Sometimes we get in our own way ... We miss a block, we miss a throw, we fall down on a route, we've gotten in our own way," he said. "I think that's a fair assessment and we need to clean those things up. Just play better team football and that takes championship individual performances."

OK guys... here's my take:

This move helps us because so far Sporano and Dan "Moron" Henning have tried to get Henne to "Manage" the game as opposed to going out and playing his natural game which is stretching the field and using that big arm of his. I think we can all agree that Henne has been "handcuffed" thus far and as I said in a previous blog, I would still love to see Henne play under an OC who takes risks and is creative and has vision and isn't a moron.

I think Penny will do a better job of "managing" the game than Henne because he is more comfortable making the short throws and throwing to Receivers under coverage. We can also HOPE that Penny uses his experience like another blogger said, and call audibles at the line and try and be less predictable.

Going back to Henne, I still believe he has potential. And my only hope for this offense to move forward is that this off-season we get rid of Dan "Moronosaurus" Henning and bring in a fresh young offensive mind, someone with creativity and someone who knows how to use the personnel that this offense has... when and if that happens, I believe this offense can take the next step up, with Henne as the QB.

Pennington age 34,
11-8 as Dolphins starter (lost his last 3 in a row, hurt in 3rd game)

For my money, the Smartest QB in the NFL this side of Peyton Manning

Among the NFL's most accurate passers

Among the NFL leaders in career QB rating

Led MIAMI to AFC East crown in first year as starter in Miami....btw also swallowed all his nevers and beat the guy who they fired him for to do it)....That same guy was in the NFC Championship game the next year.

Not know for throwing deep....but ask Darrel Revis of the jets...he can.

So whats the down side to this move again?

Marc,

Put me in check? Perhaps you should go back and read the conversations? While I go back to my Shake Weight.

One thing is for sure, if you loose your cool in Internet, you're done for. In the evening...

Dang bobby12, why all the Penne hate? This team has multiple problems. Sure, Henne got thrown under the bus but it ain't like he was setting the world on fire. He got benched not sent to Siberia. Loosen up brah.

in hennes defense...

he is still learning and really wasnt playing bad...

half the interceptions he had werenteven his fault..

ALoco, as usual u miss the point. Hard to spark a team when obvious failure here is your OC not ur young QB. The blame here goes to Ireland and Sparano whose loyalty to Henning has clouded their judgement. and Philly isnt going anywhere by the way

im done ranting, in fact im done for the weekend. i got other things to do. Enjoy

bobby12
you will be back...

Quien es mas Macho?

Brandon Marshall o' Orande Gadsen?

Eh?

what did henne do last year against san diego, when they had a chance to win the game? threw a pick, what did he do against the titans last year in ot when they should have won the game? threw a pick, what did he do against the jets when they could have tied the game, threw a pick, what did he do in the last five games throw 9 picks. say no more!

Why is everyone so upset???? wasn't this the plan all along????

Isn't this why they signed Penne to a 1 year deal??

So if Henne Struggled they had a security blanket....I got news for you guys.....he's struggling when it counts...I would say the RED ZONE, but our problems usually start at about the 23-35 yard range....Hence all the 40+ yard field goals....

This Staff had a plan B....and they are implementing it......

1-PHI HAS THEIR STADIUM FULL EVERY GAME BOBBYD12.
2-CHAD .P KNOWN FOR NOT FOLLOWING HENNING SOME OF THE TIMES AND THAT ALLOW HIM TO PLAY NOT AS A ROBOT .

3- THERE'S NO LOYALTY IN THIS BUSINESS TODAY .IF YOU DONT GIVE RESULTS YOU R THROWN TO THE WOLFS;;;;;FEED THE WOLF .

I don't think its as much Henne or Penny hate. Its more a lack of certainty and direction from the Staff?

The fact that its been years and we still don't have a long term Stud at the position.

Our worries are over. We now have a quarterback who can't throw over 20 yards. I guess that fits our offensive coordinator's style, as he never calls for a play that goes more than 20 yards.

Don Strock? Hello? Hello? Don?
Awe Hell!

GOOD point @chris 8;08

nothing personel, just business!

The blame here goes to Ireland and Sparano whose loyalty to Henning has clouded their judgement

Hmmm, the dark side clouds judgement too. Could it be they're Sith lords?

i totally believe hennie offance is more suited for chad but chads not the answer we need an offace co to be in actact mood most of the time and thats more of henne offance chad is to old (sorry)to carry this team to the future i think this a bad move the wrong one got changed

what the hell did you say joe?

AL PACINO IN THE GOOD FATER (( THEY KNOW THEIR WAY OD DOING IS OVER ,FINISHED AND THEY KNOW IT ,IN 5 YEARS WE WILL BE LEGIT ,BELIVE ME KATE )) ..

Doesn't Henne's current contract end this year?

If so, what kind of contract ($$) are they going to offer him if he doesn't play another game this season?

I believe he'll probably be traded if he doesn't play another this season.

AGAIN (( THEY KNOW THEIR WAY OF DOING BUSINESS IS OVER,FINISHED AND THEY KNOW IT ,IN 5 YEARS WE WILL BE LEGIT,BELIEVE ME KATE ))

AL PACINO IN THE GOOD FATHER

I thought I had read that the main reason of having him play the whole season was to determine if he was the future QB or not.

Then they'd try to lock him in with a decent contract or let him go (or keep him as a backup).

This is a great move! With Pennington at the helm, we will be able to utilize all our talents on offense. Running game will become primary and our short to middle range pass plays will be extremely more efficient. Pennington can read defenses much better than Henne and therefore tear a defense up. Henne's problem is HE COULD never hit the money plays. The simples one's that he gets paid to make. I think he missed three easy touch down throws to Fasono in the endzone during this season. NOT ACCEPTABLE! Our offensive game plan so far this season for passing has pretty much been short to mid range plays anyways. Pennington is the perfect fit. Too bad Sparano did not make that move last week. This week might be tough for Pennington to knock the rust off! Expect a lot of Ronnie & Ricky! GO FINS!

Pennington:

'Now it's time to roll ...'

Jeff Fisher:

Guys do we still have that Raven/Fins playoff tape?

Believe it guys, Jeff Fisher will be more than ready for Pennington. All 8 of our final 8 opponents will have the Ravens/Fins playoff tape.

My question is now this: "We will be Buffalo's first season's victory?"

Everyone thinking this offense will prosper under Pennington sure dont know football.

I think Henne has some good potential in a different offensive scheme...
but if were gona "dink and dunk"
regardless of who is QB'ing, then why not have one of the best dink an dunkers in there which is Penne

DYINGBREED.............B.MARSHALL THINKS THE OFFENSE WILL PROSPER .HE SUPPORTED THE MOVE .WHAT SAY YOU

Actually those Plastic Plane Trips were fun, but dangerous.

I SAY THIS TO THE PENNYLOVERS:

2008 RAVENS/DOLPHINS PLAYOFF TAPE. BE SURE ALL EIGHT OF OUR REMAINING OPPONENTS WILL HAVE ONE.

DO YOU?

i wont mind this move as long as he gets a chance next year

watch out tho if penn gets hurt if they put thigpen in its over and we draftin a qb :(

THE 2008 RAVENS/DOLPHINS PLAYOFF TAPE MAY BE WHY PENNINGTON STARTED 2009 0-3.

HAVE ANY OF YOU PENNYLOVERS EVER CONSIDERED THIS?

the offense will be much better with penne in there. who got them 11 wins again?

AT LEAST THE THREAT OF HENNE'S ARM FORCED SAFETIES TO PLAY A LITTLE DEEPER THAN THEY'LL NOW PLAY WITH PENNINGTON AT QB.

No ground game.

Bad play calling.

Bench Henning, not Henne.

replace Henning with Chad Pennington.

deep enough to make the interception!

People forget that the 0-3 start last year was because the defense couldn't stop tightends from scoring and running all over.

Also the offensive line wasn't consistent. They pretty much allowed Pennington to get creamed in that third game.

Very few offensive lines and QBs could have handled the defensive pressure put on by the Ravens in the playoff game of 2008.

Give Penne a break.

They made him an offer he couldn't refuse.

DYING, DID YOU HAVE ANY ICE CREAM TONIGHT OR FROZEN YOUGART ?

For all the pissing and moaning it seems that the benefits of the experiment would be obvious...(well, they are to me and a few others) Miami CANNOT make a OC change in mid course....period. Doing so is throwing in the towel. It takes a minimum of one complete off season just to do installs, much less get formation and blocking schemes straight. Along with just the simple stuff like the language of an OC's scheme's (don't let me lose ya here)...okay?....SOOOoooooo...

In order to make a determination of what may be the problem... do you fire the OC and toss in the towel?... or, bench ONE GUY for a game or two and see if a QB change makes a difference in how your offense responds to competition?

Henne is FAR from being the first starting QB who has been sat down until a team can make a determination about where they stand. I want more then anything for Him to succeed, but not so much that I am afraid to see if he is indeed ONE OF my team problems (he certainly is not the only issue)... I would inquire whether people are more afraid to find out... HE IS!... and that is why they are reacting so... Of if they are just so hell bent on wanting Henning out any move but that one will be insufficient to them?

I for one will be very interested in how the offense responds... I know I have taken note of all those on this blog who have said this week will be a disaster...(I enjoy making lists of people predictions) ... I look forward to comparing them to what really happens. I for one do not pretend to know the future of a ball club who is still young and learning how to compete.

Well said, swamy. Thank you

SOME OF YOU THINK IM JUST BLOWING SMOKE. BUT THE OFFENSE HASNT GOTTEN ANY BETTER WITH CP NOW STARTING. IF ANYTHING, IN SOME WAYS ITS JUST GOTTEN WORSE.

YOU WILL ALL SEE EXACTLY WHAT IM SAYING COME MONDAY NIGHT! YOU'LL BE DISSING THE OLINE FOR NOT BEING ABLE TO PICK UP ALL OF THE ALL OUT BLITZES. OR SCREAMING FOR THIGPEN WHO ONLY OFFERS A MORE EDXCITING WAY TO LOSE.

I think everyone worried needs to take a zanny today...this was the "just in case" scenario all along..well guess what guys...this is that situation. Henne isnt gone forever...this is a good thing for now and it was the only move at this point to do. I saw Penne in practice throw a 55 yard pass on the money! So for all who thinks he cant throw over 20yds you are crazy. So we are
4-4 guys, whats there to loose by doing this...nothing really. The best thing is this will expose Henning's horrible playcalling even more, and if Penne orchestrates a win this week...well we will be above .500, and ill take that!

Well said Derek

REMEMBER MIKE,TWO BULLETS TO THE HEAD EACH .

Very few offensive lines and QBs could have handled the defensive pressure put on by the Ravens in the playoff game of 2008.

Give Penne a break.

Posted by: swamy | November 10, 2010 at 08:34 PM

LAST I CHECKED THE RAVENS DIDNT EVEN MAKE THE AFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME THAT YEAR. SO SOMEONE WAS ABLE TO HANDLE IT.

GIVE PENNE A BREAK? HE'LL DO THAT ALL ON HIS OWN WHEN HIS SHOULDER FALLS APART AGAIN.

Have a little faith Dying, we were stalled as a team..these things happen. its best it happened now while we r 4-4. And YES, i have seen Penne hit spot on passes...and there were plenty well over 20yds...look for bess and BM to have a big day

It is VERY interesting , Derek, to see people's different opinions(hell, they might be right!) apart from the trolls.

THE PEOPLE WHO ARE AGAINST THIS MOVE THEY POST AS IF HENNE WAS FIRING ON ALL SYLINDERS ,BE REAL PEOPLE WE NEED TO SELL TICKETS ,WE NEED A SPARK THAT CAN HELP OUR PLAYERS .

COWKILLA,

THIS TEAM IS BEYOND FAITH. REMEMBER FAITH WITHOUT WORKS IS DEAD. THERE'S A LOTTA WORK LEFT TO BE DONE WITH THIS TEAM BEFORE FAITH WILL HELP.

WHY DONT YOU JUST TELL ME TO BELIEVE IN SANTA CLAUS.

STARTING PENNE IS LIKE JUST TRYING TO SPRINKLE A LITTLE PIXIE DUST OVER THE OFFENSE AND HOPE IT WORKS AT THIS POINT. WHY ARE YOU GUYS SO GULLIBLE?

SOME OF YOU HERE WOULD HAVE BELIEVE THAT ALL WE HAVE TO DO IS BELIEVE THINGS HAVE GOTTEN BETTER AND THE BOOGEY MAN WILL JUST GO AWAY!!!

CAN YOU TURN OFF YOUR CAP KEY PLEASE,IT'S ANNOYING TO SEE THE WHOLE PAGE IN CAPS

most dolphin fans would have run Peyton manning out of town after his 28 picks in hist first 21 games. incredible.

let's put the 34 year old in who can't throw down to the field to really open up this offense?

Marino endorses Henne?mind you Marino is the antithesis of Pennington.

HI-HO the witch is dead, the wicked witch is dead. HI-HO the witch is dead, the wicked witch is dead!

Also, to see if it "sparks a fire" in the other guy. Who the hell came up with this brilliant Plan?

I once had a girlfriend who cheated on me to "spark a fire". I worked, I dumped her and started dating twins.

it

Pennington's attitude is great. The coaching staff needs more of his attitude. So does Henne.
