The reasons Chad Henne must remain at QB

You folks really must stop e-mailing me. Post your comments below in the comments section instead because it's getting crazy and I cannot possibly reply to everyone, although I would love to do so. Normally, I just reply to the folks that call me a fat, moron, frick because, dang it, I'm not a frick so I feel the need to defend myself.

Anyway, most of your e-mails Monday were about one of two topics:

1. Fire everybody.

2. Bench Chad Henne.

I can assure you the Dolphins are not about to fire everybody. This post will attempt to explain why the Dolphins should not bench Henne.

I watched the 26-10 loss to Baltimore and I'm not about to do a coach Tony Sparano and give you an "all is well, there's nothing to worry about," speech. As this Miami Herald story points out, Henne threw 5 TDs and 4 interceptions the first four games and 3 TDs and 6 interceptions the past four games.

Bottom line is the Dolphins were beaten pretty soundly at Baltimore and there is a pattern they follow in that they cannot beat very good teams. So all is not well.

But in watching Henne's worst game of the season, it becomes evident there are glances that you must admit are present before you summarily dismiss him as your quarterback.

Did you notice that Henne completed 9 of his first 10 passes against the big, bad Baltimore defense? That is correct, he was 9 of 10 to start the game.

Nobody noticed that because the one incompletion was an interception by Baltimore's Ladarius Webb. And, true enough, an interception does overshadow nine other completions if those completions are TD passes. But this interception was more the wide receiver's fault than Henne's.

Fact is Brian Hartline stumbled and was on his knees when the ball came to him on the sideline. Webb simply stood where Hartline was down and caught the pass. If Hartline had been on his feet that pass is either an incompletion or a completion. Not an interception.

There were two other picks Henne threw. He had one that led Brandon Marshall a hair too far and the Miami receiver didn't necessarily go above and beyond to stretch for the catch because Ray Lewis had Marshall's ribs in the cross hairs. The tipped pass went directly to Ed Reed.

Interception No. 3 was Henne's biggest mistake, that in the fourth quarter when he threw inaccurately and the defensive back on Davone Bess simply caught the errant pass. I put that one on Henne. But Bess had zero separation. And Bess didn't exactly dig hard back toward the pass. Fact is the DB made a stronger break toward the ball and came away with it. Bess does better work, that interception also becomes an incompletion.

The point I'm making is Henne didn't exactly get a ton of support. And I didn't even mention the Anthony Fasano drop. The Brandon Marshall drop. The Ronnie Brown drop.

I do have to mention the terrible pass to a wide open Fasano in the end zone near the end of the first half. That was, in my humble, Henne's worst pass of the day and it cost Miami four points or the difference between a touchdown and the field goal the team kicked.

So did all that spell out a 26-10 loss? No.

The Ravens did not score after Webb's interception. They got a field goal after the second interception. And the final pick came with 42 seconds to play and Baltimore merely took a knee to end the game after that turnover.

So Henne's terrible day cost the Dolphins a touchdown -- the field goal plus the difference between what might have been a TD and FG to end the half.

The Dolphins lost this game by 16 points, folks. It wasn't all on the QB.

Now, maybe you think benching Henne is still the move because, well, you just want to stir things up. Or maybe it's because you don't like Henne's robotic approach to playing. Or maybe you just hate Michigan.

I would say the Dolphins must stay with Henne because if nothing else happens this year, they must, must, must, find out if he is the future or not. The Dolphins aren't a playoff team right now. They are not playing playoff-caliber football.

But if they finish the 2010 season with a conviction one way or the other about Chad Henne, at least the season was not in vain. If, on the other hand, the team replaces Henne with Chad Pennington and makes a playoff run only to find out that still isn't the answer, we're back to 2008 and we've wasted two seasons.

Coach Tony Sparano's contract runs out after 2011. He cannot afford to find himself back at the end of 2008 while the calendar says its 2011 and his contract says it expires in 2011. We need to know if Henne is the future at quarterback or not.

That means you might have to endure some growing pains and setbacks. But to back-track now to Chad Pennington in search of some short-term fix is taking one step forward but finding yourself two steps back.

We platoon our RBs why not platoon our QBs?Henne seems to still have problems when the situation calls for a touch pass[most recently the one to Fasano in the end zone].Penningtons forte is the touch pass. When we get into the red zone Penningtons lack of arm strength is less of an issue and his skill set gives us a better chance to get the ball into the end zone.

Whatever mando, bottom line is the dolphins have play makers but they don't have coaches. All of them are garbage, just puppets to parcells who is now gone. Unlike Pinocchio these puppets of ours have strings and uhh.. the puppet master (parcells) left town so the "coaches" aren't any good to us or this team at all. Reality is Dolphins go 8-8 this year and thats that. I am soooooooo glad the NBA regular season is in full effect!!!! Time to start writing about a REAL Miami team!!! Quite writing about the fish, they are dead in the water! GO HEAT!!!!!

Basketball sux.

I say give C-Pen a go. Why all the fuss about arm strength. We dont through the ball deep and we have no deep threat so what use is a big innacuarte arm anyway.

Dan Hennings resume says he leaves Miami after this year anyway so play Pennington. You can bet we;ll have a new offensive coordinator next year anyway..

No the phins suck and that's fact. The best QB on the team is Tyler Thigpen and he isn't starting, phins only chance to win in the future is to make him our starting QB. Thats a fact. Anyways The Heat are the only team in Miami that's ever gonna win anything and bring another Championship to Miami. I'm just saying. GO HEAT!!!!!!!

Miami's biggest problem is the abandonment of the running game.

Ronnie Brown runs 6 times for 45 yards on the first drive, including a 12-yard TD, and then has 3 rushes the rest of the game (2, 9, and 3)! Ricky had a total of 2 rushes.

Did you read that!!! after we stuffed it down their throat on the first drive, we rushed it 5 more times. This isn't the first time we've done this (we've done it about every game), but it's the most glaring example.

Henning must go before we discuss Henne being benched.

JEFF IRELAND, BILL PARCELLS, COACH SPARANO, MIKE NOLAN NOW HOW ABOUT A WIN 4 da MANY LOYAL MIAMI DOLPHINS HOMETOWN FANS.every road opponents fans get 2 see their team lose 2 da dolphins.we da "LOYAL FANS" of da MIAMI DOLPHINS ABSOLUTELY DO NOT ENJOY WATCHING OUR TEAM LOSE EVERY HOME GAME miserably..TAKE A PAGE FROM DA NEW ORLEANS SAINTS NATIONALLY TELEVISED GAME ON HOLLOWEEN NITE..GUTTS, HEART, TALENT, NO QUIT, N MOST IMPORTANTLY-ALL DA PLAYAS ON DA PLAYIN FIELD HAVE EXTREMELY-I MEAN EXTREMELY BIGG ASS BALLS.DA SAINTS "CAME 2 PLAY N 2 RULE THEIR HOME TURF N WIN DA FUCKIN GAME"."CHAMPIONS".U DAMN RITE DEY R.WAT GAME r dem SORRY ASS SOFT ASS BUM ASS DOLPHINS GOIN 2 SHOW UP n PLAY @ HOME ON NOV. 14th AGAINST DEM TOUGH ASS TITANS with dat SUPA SORRY BUM ASS MOSS.."THE LOSER' GAME"

henne is yet another early round qb failure like pat white and john beck. henne never won the qb competition in camp;he was handed the reins because the regime didnt want to admit to another draft mistake. penne/thigpen are better options. henne/henning/sparano are an "easy read" who dont take chances according to the ravens.

We have great RB's and one of the greatest WR's in the game and he only has 1 TD...Henne sucks! Sparano needs to join Wade phillips...Its been several years without Marino and we still cant find a QB..Throw big bucks at VICK !

i think we lost our last 5 home games under henne/henning/sparano. start thigpen please!

Javir Bur! My man, you have inspired me!! Can I call you Javi? Anyway, Im glad your a loyal Miami Phan me too, but reality is stop wasting your hard earned money on da phins man we bums, you need to take those dollars an invest them in a real Miami team, like The HEAT!!!! You wanna see heart, passionate players, champions here in Miami, Da Heat got that brah!!! You need to talk to 6bucks7games I think he holdin out on our tickets man. You wanna see a Miami team dominate and $h!t on other teams at home, here in Miami gotta go see da Heat brah!!!! GO HEAT!!!!!!!!

Greg Z I agree 100% with you, Thigpen is our best QB on the team, I knew that last year after watching him play against the steelers last year. He has a lot of upside and I really believed in him. This team I don't believe in. We bums brah, straight up bums.

Dan Henning is Doing everything it takes to lose. Doesnt anybody see this?
Its like he has a Personal problem with the organization. Henning MUST GO!!!!!
Henne Can be Great WITHOUT Henning!
IF Henning stays, then Bench Henne NoW!!
THIGPEN is the Better QB on this team.HandsDown!
Ireland,Sperano, are Like Kids HomeAlone cause The parents are gone.Theyre Destroying the House caus Parcells isGone to early.
Im starting to see a patern thats gonna Destroy this team and set us Back 3 to Five yrs... i hope im wrong.

ps....Im Still a Dolphan4Life!
Im Glad i injoy wacthing all NFL games too.
Go Fins!!!!

Stop trying to find something to show, that Henne ins't that bad. He is. He clearly proved, that he is not and will never be a real franchise QB (because he just has not the abilities to!)
Cut Henne!

Usually I agree with you Mando, but I think you are off base here. First of all I was at the game, so had a different view on this. If he hits a WIDE OPEN Fasano, they go into the locker room up 14-13 rather than being down. And you don't even mention the slide on 3 and 10 rather than gutting it out and trying to get the first down to start the second half. Watching Flacco do those kind of things makes me wonder about Henne, and I still think he is the QB of the future, but he needs to lead the team, take a hit now and then and push to get those extra yards.

lance~ i said the same thing yesteday so .. right on! everyone agrees penny would do better but is a step back. and thygpen is a better QB. he is 26 years old played a full year in kansas city sat on the bench for a year with Penny teaching him. this kid is prime!! what sucks is unless Henne gets a bump on his head we wont see any change!!

i heard a saying once, every fans favorit player

is the back up quarterback

Intresting point about bringing in Chad P. in the redzone. I see so many passes sail high to our wr's near the endzone

Pennington is the true LEADER of the team and is our best chance of winning.
Does anyone remember in pre-season games how he was the only QB that had chemistry with Marshall on every pass play?
I'm telling ya folks, Penny-to-Marshall is our saving grace.

It's not Henne. It's Dan Hennings' play calling that has cost Miami the losses. Dan is the one that has to go!!!

I doubt we make the playoffs. I think we need AT LEAST 6-2 for the next 8 games, and even 10-6 might not cut it this year. Maybe even 11-5 wont cut it again this year like it did for the pats 2 seasons ago.

at pats, at jets, home bills, home titans, bears home, browns home,at raiders, and then detroit at home, not in that particular order.

But obviously the browns, raiders and lions are ALL playing way better then they have been historically the last decade.

Not one game is a gimmie.

Id argue we have the hardest schedule in the nfl....again 2 years in a row.

Especially when you consider
7 of 8(poor bills) first games were against playoff/superbowl contenders this year.

We will win just enough to sabotage our draft position and stay a middle of the road team with upset potential.Too stressful for me imo

Listen, if it is true that a couple of baseball announcers got fired because of a Blog and its participants, that's serious stuff. These bloggers have better be right or It will backfire on them. For sure.

Great Coaches make Great Decisions.

Agree with Armando about benchig Henne at this point in the Season.

How about Pennington for O.C.

Hey Mando, what type of person participates in a sports blog for a local newspaper?
A dedicated sports fan who had passion for his team.
Please do not preach to us like we are little school children with no knowledge of the game.
Almost everyone who participates here on a regular basis is speaks from the heart with a lot of facts to back it up.
When we see Henne struggling and want him out it's because we love our team and want them to win....and Henne is not getting it done with 7 TD's vs 12 INT's.
Mando, we know the game as well as you, we just lack the access to coaches and the inside information...please feed us that intel because that is what we are seeking on this blog.

Henne needs a deep threat receiver and he'll be fine.
I love how you people watch Thigpen in one game and say he's way better than Henne.....even though he threw an INT late in the game that cost us the game.
Like I said before, get a super fast WR,and Henne will get things done.

It's not the tools were lacking, we have plenty of tools.
Marshall
Bess
Brown
Williams
All playmakers in their own right!
We need a new QB that can utilize the tools to reach their max potential...Henne is not that guy.

Who elected you as the blog spokesman NHFINSFAN? I agree completely with the writers opinion. Isn't that what a writer does? Share his opinion?

I want the team to win as much or more then you. The difference is I know we are not quite ready yet to make a true run towards the Super Bowl and whomever they elect to play QB is not going to make the difference.

Chad Pennington may win a game or two more assuming he stays healthy, but we saw his limitations already. Tyler Thigpen has a little more potential, but you know what potential means, right? It means you have not done it yet.

Rebuilding is a process, and everyone expects immediate results. Therein lies the problem.

So if I understand all I'm reading then in summary we will have to put up with this inconsistancy and "easy read" Quarterback and coaching staff for the remainder of this season and all of next season 2011. DAMN! Folks you see what is happening in Dallas. Someone do the research and tell us, did our present regime of management and coaching staff put together the present players at Dallas? Interesting, isn't it?

i spent august in davie at the fins training camp watching practices the last 3 years. this year it was particularly distressing watching henne struggle daily in the offense. since he was annointed before the camp began he received the majority of the snaps with the first team. henne rarely looked like a leader and didnt command the huddle. after failing on 3 downs he was often given a 2nd set to keep the "drive" alive. most all of his passes were checkdowns all practice. he didnt provide any"spark" to the offense and long downfield throws were almost never attempted. i dont know if its all on him because our playcalling is terrible also. in the end i gotta group henne/henning/sparano as all the same;scared to fail.

Henne isn't the problem, HENNING is. This coaching staff (save for Nolan) doesn't have any testicular fortitude and isn't willing to take chances. We need heads to roll, and we need to take chances to be a success.

However, next year in the draft, since talent wise we're ok, why not take a flyer on Ryan Mallett if he's available?

Henne just doesn't have it. He doesn't command a huddle like Pennington does and he doesn't do anything that every other qb in the NFL does. He is average at best and the Dolphins should just cut their losses with him and look for another qb, we wouldn't have this problem if we went with brees instead of culpepper.

Henne does not have that "it" factor. Did you watch Colt Mccoy play on Sunday? Or Bradford this year. Both rooks and they have "it". Henne is good back up material and that is it.

this sums up my thoughts on the qb situation in miami.

I think he has regressed. I feel no confidence in him. He stares down his receivers, rarely scans the field and with that misses wide open people. That wide open pass to Fasano was not the reason we lost the game but it coulda turned the emotions in the correct direction.
I have not seen this team play with a fired up demeanor all season, is it coaching or is it our wooden QB? I have no idea....but either way I hate it.
Something HAS to change. If it is not benching Henne, or firing Henning, then what do YOU think it needs to be??

Thank you Mando, This is what I have been preaching for the last couple blogs. I really would like to know if you agree that the Chad Henne we see now, "robotic", is a consequence of a coach pulling his strings like he is a puppet. I do not think they let Henne just go play. He always is looking over his shoulder if he takes a chance. Hence why we NEVER see a ball thrown up for grabs in double coverage to Marshall. Marshall WINS those battles. Again I have no clue if Henne is the answer, but we will never know unless they let him play a little more loose. Going to Pennington is a joke. I like Penny and think he is good, but not great in the least. Even if we have him in at QB and we go on a winning streak and make it to the 1st round of playoffs. Odds are we will get demolished like we did against the Ravens with Penny 2 years ago. What good is that. Our D is not good enough anyway at this point.

Henne seems to read the field well between the 25's, then it's all hands on deck, man overboard. I look at guys like Flacco, Fitzpatrick, Sanchez, Bradford, McCoy, Stafford, hell even Cassel, and I wonder if Henne does have it. Yeah, Henning is a horrid OC, but Henne doesn't seem to have it in his offense, what makes anyone think he can do it in another system? I was a huge Henne supporter, but my support is waining. I like CP10 and wouldn't mind seeing Thigpen, but at the same time, I kind of agree with 'Mando. Maybe just let Henne ride out the season and if he isn't it, back to the drawing board. There's no sense in making the Playoffs just to get out heads kicked in like in 2008. Watched some clips of Idaho's Nathan Enderle, he looks good.

Mando,
How about the Ravens hitting the QB after a scramble, where he gives himself up by sliding feet first? it happened a few times and no calls.

henne was a good qb when he entered as a freshmen @ michigan , when he graduated 4 years later he was the same qb as a freshmen ...... he never took the next step in college .. and he will never take the next step in the pros

Armando,
I don't think Henne should be benched for a short term fix. I think he should be benched because he has had ample opportunity to show he is the QB of the future and he has not. The only thing he has shown is that he isn't consistent and probably never will be. We need to move in another direction in the long term, like draft a QB high or something. We also need to move on in the short term. Nothing can be gained by continuing to play Henne who has shown his upside is limited. Either let Thigpen have 8 games to see if he may be the future, or play Pennington to try to salvage a playoff spot this season. Either way, the Henne ship has sailed.

Good point John, I lost it on both of those. Very late hits.

Chad Henne is not the problem. He is a young QB learning and will eventually be really good. The problem lies with the coaching philosophy. We here about how this team wants to be a running smash mouth team. RB's are not the strength of this team anymore Sparano! Start playing 4 receiver sets and use the passing game to open up the running game! Marshall is a beast, Bess is talked about as one of the best slot receivers in the game and Hartline has come on the past couple of games. Add Wallace to the mix and lets see what happens. The fact is the Dolphins handcuff themselves with the "we are a running team". They play to conservative and that is evident when we had three straight running plays after we take the lead against Cincinnati and hope our D comes through for us. (That was a three and out BTW!) This team needs to play with urgency now and stop being scared of making mistakes.

For those who believe that Henne has had ample opportunity to prove himself, you might want to look up Drew Brees.

Not every QB develops at the same pace.

With that said, it isn't looking promising, is it?

MIKE , I AGREE BUT WHEN THEY TALK ABOUT MARSLL THEY ALWAYS BRING UP STATS. LOOK AT EDWARDS REC...25 AND AVG..18.2 WHERE MARSHALL REC..52 W/AVG.... 11 .

The recievers and QB should make more of a fuss when they get intefered with. It works for other teams. Eventually they will get some of those calls, but they have to complain more.
The QB has to be the field captain and point these things out to the refs. How many times have you seen Manning or Brady do it?
I see Henne content to go mope on the sideline.
He needs to play with more fire.

ALoco,

If you are going to compare a WR's production, you need to take into account, the style of offense they play in, the QB throwing, and the supporting casts. You also need to factor in play count, % of missed opportunities, missed assignments, and many other factors your stats don't show.

A great example of this is blocking downfield.

You even said it, he made his biggest mistake when things count the most in the 4th quarter. Leaders and playmakers step up and win the game for their team in the 4th quarter, Henne does not. Bottom line is Henne is at best a lifetime backup qb in the nfl, the faster the dolphins realize this, the faster they win have a playoff caliber team, right now they are just a mediocre team that every year will go 8-8, at best 9-7. We need Michael Vick.

The dilemma is, then, that under the current offensive scheme they cannot and wil not be able to determine Henne's worth & future value.

Okay, so, stick w/ Henne, and GET RID OF HENNING and/or -- Tony, get out from under Parcells' shadow & ordr Henning to call more traditional more attacking pass plays.

Hey Mando ... Nice try in defending Henne. but you failed in my mind. I disagree with you about the high ball to Marshall and subsequent interception. This was a pass over the middle which needs to be on the receivers numbers (right between the 1 and the 9 on Marshall) or else they will get killed by the likes of Ray Lewis.

This is symptomatic of an overall problem with Henne. His passes do not lead the receivers hitting them in a position to make a play. You never talked about all the completions that went nowhere because the pass was off -- too high, too low, or behind the receiver.

We have seen enough of Henne and I don't care what Sparano says to the media ... Henne is not improving in being QB friendly to receivers ... Parcells knew this. I also do not agree with you that the season is over. Pennington could take them on a 7-1 or 6-2 run (beating either NE or NJ) and make the playoffs. Please consider that Pennington could run more of the 2 minute offense or check off at the line after the team has hudled to circumvent stupid calls by Henning.

The QB draft class for 2011 is deep. Let Ireland do his stuff next year ... win this year. Henne is nothing more than a career backup ... mark these words I will remind you in the future when the fins stay with Henne. You are our advocate and should pressure fins management not to give up on the season. Put a winner at QB and go for the playoffs. Don't just give up to provide Henne with 8 more games to prove himself. He has had enough!!

They Call Me... Tim says:

CB, I picked 10-6 to be positive because I thought 11-5 with this schedule and this young team was too much. I also said I wouldn’t be surprised if we finished 8-8 or 9-7 and that 7-9 6-10 even 5-11 and 4-12 wouldn't bum me out because it would be a sign of status quo and no progress.I don't know why Crowder is so upset about the spitting, I spit man juice in my boyfriend NJ's face everyday and he doesn't care 1 bit. Right NJ? LOL

"he made his biggest mistake when things count the most in the 4th quarter. Leaders and playmakers step up and win the game for their team in the 4th quarter, Henne does not."

Great point, and although I've been a Henne supporter, you can't over look this.

MIKE, IF COURSE WE SHOULD COUND THE STYLE OF OFFENSE AND THE QB .LOOK AT HAKEEM NICKS W/9 TD AND 12.8 AVG AND 656 YARDS .

IF HE'S HERE IN MIAMI ,I HAVE NO DOUBT HE WILL NOT HAVE THESE NUMBERS.STILL WE R TALKING 10 MILLION W/1 TD
