The situation according to Dan Henning

Dan Henning talked to the media during his weekly presser on Thursday. This week, I assume, everyone is more interested in what he has to say based on the fact stuff is happening (and, unfortunately, not happening for the offense in some cases).

So here are the most interesting bits of tid that came out of Henning's exchange with the media:

Q. How would Henning rate his offense at the midpoint of the 2010 season?

A. "We haven't been as efficient as we'd like. We have done some pretty good things but we haven't been as efficient as we'd like. We have not as many touchdowns as we'd like. We've gotten the ball seven times between our 48 and the goal line and out of those seven times we have a touchdown and six field goals. But we only have gotten it on the plus side of 50 twice and that was the Pittsburgh game and we weren't able to get touchdowns there. We've had a lot of long drives for touchdowns. We've had a lot of long drives for field goals. But we haven't executed the way we'd like when we did have the opportunity. If you look at the stats, our opportunities in the red area are way off from a lot of other teams' opportunities in the red area.

"So, overall, we're not doing as well as we'd like. And if we were doing as well as we'd like maybe we'd have a better record. So we're 4-4 and we have to be better than that, obviously, especially in the division we're in and the conference we're in if we want to get to where we want to be at the end of the year."

Q. Does Chad Pennington have greater freedom to call audibles than Chad Henne and does the list of plays change based on the quarterback change?

A. "Same. Same. The list of plays are based on who we're playing. I don't think we'll have a different scope of things. You obviously know different people see things differently. They read things differently. When it comes down to the quarterback you have judgment that takes place so you might see him do something that you didn't see [Henne] do. You also might see him do something that Chad did do that might not be as good. That's what you live with whenever you make that type of change."

Q. Does the fact you didn't throw deep much with Henne mean the offense is better suited for Chad Pennington?

A. "No, I don't think the reason we've not thrown as deep much with Henne is Henne as much as the defenses we're playing against. They're trying to stack up against Brandon and the few times we have thrown deep, we've only been successful a couple of times. Like last week we hit Brian Hartline on a pump down the sideline for about 35 yards. And we opened up the Vikings game and we got over the top. As soon as we got over the top on the Vikings, they're going to shut that off.

Q. So does that aspect of the offense change?

A. "There will be times when the shots will be there and when they're there, we expect them to be hit."

Q. How does the QB switch affect Henne's standing in the league and ability to come back?

A. "I think if you go back through history, I saw a graphic on this somewhere. When Elway came out in '83, he didn't win as many games as Henne has and he had a lot more interceptions than touchdowns. Steve Young came into the World Football League and flopped to Tampa. After Tampa he got traded to San Francisco. He didn't really start starting until his ninth year. He was pretty good. This guy has come out of the box and he's done some very good things. He hasn't dropped any balls, missed any blocks or missed any tackles. And he has done some things he'd like to have back, so to speak. I've said it before and I'll say it again, there's no reason this guy can't be a good quarterback in this league. He's got the tools. He's got the work ethic to the Nth degree and he is a very tough guy. He's a sensitive guy -- doesn't show that very much. But he is a tough guy and he'll come back from this."

I am starting the "hire Jim harbaugh" campaign now. If he could do what he's done with that joke Stanford program - he deserves a shot. He's young, former Qb who will institute a modern attack and will bring swagger to the orgnaization.

Sparano can go to pasture - all he's good for is losing weight.

mark in toronto, thank you. why the hell did we not build the offense around henne beginning in 2008 when we drafted him, if he really was to be our qb of the future. henning wants an offense with interchagable qbs that do nothing more than not make mistakes.

It's not about taking shots down the field. It's about a more dynamic offense that gives our wr more room for yac. It's about knowing where there are advantages and attacking. It's about time for a new OC!

thigpen is alot like sanchez;he can beat you with the pass or he can run from pressure. it puts alot of pressure on the D. then you can run the rock as the game goes on. you can use playaction and screens too. keep the D from locking in. thigpen needs the work;doesnt lack the excitement we've been waiting so long for. penne is a bridge to thigpen. if u remember last yrs. pittsburgh game he almost lead us back from 20 pts down. he got 2 td's and almost had ginn at the 3 yd line. it was obvious pass interference with clark laying on ginns back but was given an int.

drop henning, give henne a real shot

Penningotn's 2009 stats, 3 starts 413 yards passing, 1td, 2, int, ahahahahahahahaaa!!!!

Wow, people are F**king dumb!!!

This is a little off topic but you said not to email you. Can you please address Al Harris' role and why the Dolphons put Will Allen on IR when they were lack CB depth? PUP list made more sense in my mind but I didn't really know the extent of his injury.

Thank you.

they talk about coaches being scared every time henne threw the ball. i'll be scared everytime pennington attempts a pass over 10 yards, and everytime he gets hit. his floaters linger in the air way too long sometimes.

We have traded our future for the "win now" philosophy.
Henne is damaged goods and most likely gone.
Pennington is our QB for 8 games, then he becomes a free agent.
Thigpen is a 3rd string QB and has zero chance of being our starting QB next year.

As an old wise man once told me "focus on the present moment as the past is history and the future is uncertain"
Let's win now with Pennington and try to have some fun over the next two months.

thigpen was very exciting in the steelers game last year. maybe if they put him in over pat white in that game we may have won. i still think henne can be the man though. he seems to need to calm down and loosen up.

NHFINSFAN - hahahahahaa, win now with Pennington??? My d**K has more of a chance as qb than Pennington does to beat a good team. he averaged 100 yards passing per game last year.

Defense better be pitching shutouts.

i also remember being thoroughly embarrassed in the 2008 playoff game with penne at the reigns. i remember the start of 2009 season when he seemed to throw the ball away far too often.

DC, hang in there. we are all very discouraged with the team right now. all of us believe we have the answer. i trusted my eyes at practice more than what the coaches say. i saw who deserved a chance to play; guys like thigpen, ryan baker, marlon moore, roberto wallace, cam wake, etc. our offensive system is flawed,it doesnt allow for any big plays or YAC. we drafted the wrong qb to run it. henne doesnt have that skill set;like putting a square peg in a round hole. if we're stuck in this system, penne is the guy. if we want a future, thigpen is the man.

just for the love of god dont embarrass us fans anymore this year. i was embarrassed after the jets game (utterly ridiculous playcalling) i was embarrassed after the pats game, and i was embarrassed after the ravens game. enough of us looking like total fools when we loose a game. and good bye j. allen. there are loads of video with big scores against him. hell i can think of about 3 or 4 just this year. (m. wallace, b. edwards, t. owens, but i think greg jennings was against davis)

ed, in fairness to jason allen, he was never given safety help over the top. he was isolated in one on one coverage against the opp. best receivers. clemons is no help on pass plays. most cb's will get toasted in those situations. most teams have alot of help back there.

wow, have you seen sparano lately? he looks like he hasnt slept all season. he may be in over his head; i hope not but personell decisions are getting weird. camarillo for sapp and jason allen for harris. no way!

Henning Presser = More Mush From the Wimp.

I know he seems to dazzle the media types with his wit and his cantankerousness, but from the fan's perspective, how about................

More Coordinating, Less Talking.

Tuna Melts for everyone!!

They benched Henne, making him fall on the sword for a pee wee league style offense, coordinator & coaching style, sighting the need to win now. We bring in Al Harris who hasn't played in a year and who will be 36. But you pass on Randy Moss? You didn't know you wanted to win last week when he went on waivers? Seriously?

Does this make ANY sense? At least Moss would have helped the offense & Henne & also the defense at the same time. Maybe playing with a lead once in a while would take the pressure off this young defense who is awful getting off the field.

Penny & Al Harris really help? How about showing some balls as a coaching staff? How about designing your offense around your QB instead of insisting your QQ adapts to the dinosaur style offense?

This franchise is so messed up from TOP to bottom & holes at almost every critical position except LT! We are becoming the 2000 era Bills & 80's era Cardinals.

this years personnel moves have been head scratching to say the least. we drop and sign 2 guys per week. they keep thinking they are going to unearth some hidden talent.

Blow it out your ass Henning. Shoulda asked him why after running Ronnie successfully he shut him dowm, or why 3rd and one on goal line with a guy like Polite who is 17/18 in that situation he calls a run or why does he call games like the 1930s. Shoulda asked him when he is gonna resign for the good of the team or why the game has passed him by. Dan Henning = Dolphin Failure

derek i was talking about henne not allen. trade henne if he wants to be traded. like i said finish the season with penne, and next year make a hard push for vick, or mcnabb if he doesn't want to stay in washington. i would much rather have either one of those guys over henne anyday!

I wish they would just release Thigpen so i dont have to read anymore about how a third string career backup who suks should be our starter. Thigpen is where he would be on any NFL team, an emergency back up

agreed, joe. and for the record, screw bill parcells. we have been following the lead of a man who didnt seem to take his job seriously. honestly, you step down on the eve of the season? then publicly criticize your qb? then a month later you talk about wanting to work in new york? did you give 2 sh1ts about this team? so we as a team are following the ideals of a man who couldn't care less.

On the bright side people, January will bring the end of the line for Sparano, Henning, the ST coach, maybe Henne, Penne AND Thigpen.

Heck, we may have to draft 53 players just to field a team next year.

you would rather have vick or mcnabb? ill take penne over mcnabb. and i dont want anything to do with michael vick

if you want to win you would.

Shockey was right all along - parcells is a h0m0

doubt it 77, but if i want a few dogs drowned or electrocuted then vick is a different story

This guy is an absolute moron. Talk about Vanilla - we must be the easiest offense in the league to plan against - nothing new to the table ever - PATHETIC.

maybe penne gets hurt and henne goes back in, and all this fuss will be for nothing

I wish this organization's well-known, KGB-style information control would extend to telling Henning to STFU.

If he was about to tell me I had won the Lottery I still would not want to hear from him

"We've had a lot of long drives for TD"quote Mr.Henning. Eight touch downs is not a lot for 8 weeks of football, maybe if this is week 2 in th NFL! Please Mr.Ross and do yourself a favor and all of us fans a big favor, just FIRED him now!!!

i concur Echenpod. 'the defense wont let us pass downfield' 'the defense wont let us get the ball to our 50 million dollar wr in any sort of favorable position' (save a couple plays, marshall looks like camarillo most of the time, going down right where he catches the ball).

henne at no.19 in league for prformance in the red zone when he was given the chance to score a td .this move was the right one .

Ed, 100% right. Thats the only I Phone ESPN update i wanna see Sunday. Pennington injured, Out For Season. Henne starting QB. End of problem

Anyone watch M.Ryan play last night?

armando, please check the rumor that henne asked for a trade .

any one watched the great.....RONDO last night destroy the heat ?

I would if I were henne, try fighting mike tyson with one hand tied behind your back.

yes, ryan looked sharp. flacco looked average as usual. maybe he should be under pennes tutelage; the new king of check downs. of course why wouldn't you throw them when they can account for over 100 yards passing

Basketball sucks

Someone said Henning has two Super Bowl rings and almost won another and he is correct. But what he failed to mention was that last team (Carolina) ran his ass out of town!!! The game has passed him by and its nothing wrong with that. It just means his time has come and gone. Its time for a new approach and new ideas about how to get the damn ball in the end zone. So I ask all Dolfans, who is out there that you wanna see calling plays next year?

titans are leading in sacks, right? perhaps this weeks game will be a testament to penne's durability

not when rondo plays PAyuengswings

ALoco, hope you are right about thigpen being #2 qb. penne gets his chance;then thigpen. he's only 26;waiting his chance.

Wow, ed, you DON'T want Michael Vick? You mean the exciting QB that has his team in FIRST place? The guy that scares opposing teams with his arm AND his leg like NO DOLPHIN currently on the roster does? You mean to say you'd rather PENNINGTON than THAT GUY? Because he fought a few animals? You're an idiot! Obviously you don't want to win. So enjoy your mediocre team.

Me, on the other hand, I want to win at all costs. And if it was up to me, and there was a chance to get Mike Vick, I'd sell the ENTIRE team, the stadium and everything I could to get him. You see, Vick is a winner, but I guess Miami fans wouldn't know anything about that, since they haven't seen a winner in like 20 years here.

Henne is better than CP!!!!!!! All day long...the issue is Henning! and his awful play calling.......

Henning just spilled his prune juice.

Not a great game ALoco and who is rondo? He plays for the sixers, right?LOL

call me an idiot DC? blow me buddy. he did a bit more than fight a few dogs, he tortured and murdered them. so go f8ck yourself.

ALoco making up shyt again, just like tix selling fast. Dolphins offering all kind of specials like LIV IT UP tix and season holder specials to try to sell out this game. Thigpen not gonna be #2, Henne didnt ask for trade. All fairytales

Goin to fed-ex for monday night game and will evaluate vick live.

I think Sparano and company have lost the place! The personnel moves have been suspect lately. Not a big Jason Allen fan but I would have kept him on the team. He's good on ST's, started the season good and would have been good depth. You don't just give guys like that away. Not sure what to think of adding Al Harris. 36 years old and injured a lot....strange move!!

Let's say this about Henne. It wasn't working under the current OC. Let's give him a little time off to regroup. I don't see Thigpen being the answer either short-term or long-term. I like him but I don't know what that accomplishes. I'd like to know what the game plan is for this season. Is the plan to beat our brains in at all costs to try and make the playoffs because quite honestly it's a pipedream and we're wasting valuable development time for Henne. To be honest, I've lost all faith in the coaching staff and rather than bringing in a good OC next year and then losing him after Sparano is fired I'd rather just get rid of Sparano now and see who we can bring in and hopefully that guy is able to keep Nolan. It's not going to happen under Sparano and I was one of his biggest fans.

He also did time, in accordance with the law.

Watching Ryan last night, and even Flaco, for that matter, just compounded the misery. And then the promo for the 8 hr Christmas Special on Parcells and his Greatness.

But hey---we've got the best LT in the league to protect Henne, Penny, Thiggy & whatever prospect they dig up next yr for the next 3 yr project.

I just can't understand why owners pay millions to stupid know nothing coaches when for pocked change they could employ any one of the "know it all" experts that clog this blog.

It's amusing to read these comments, and I do it daily, but it keeps reassuring me that the less we know about something the the firmer we are married to our ignorance...jack

as far as hennings super bowl rings, i read a post somewhere showing that henning has coached for a team with a winning record something like 4 times in 27 years.
