The situation according to Dan Henning

Dan Henning talked to the media during his weekly presser on Thursday. This week, I assume, everyone is more interested in what he has to say based on the fact stuff is happening (and, unfortunately, not happening for the offense in some cases).

So here are the most interesting bits of tid that came out of Henning's exchange with the media:

Q. How would Henning rate his offense at the midpoint of the 2010 season?

A. "We haven't been as efficient as we'd like. We have done some pretty good things but we haven't been as efficient as we'd like. We have not as many touchdowns as we'd like. We've gotten the ball seven times between our 48 and the goal line and out of those seven times we have a touchdown and six field goals. But we only have gotten it on the plus side of 50 twice and that was the Pittsburgh game and we weren't able to get touchdowns there. We've had a lot of long drives for touchdowns. We've had a lot of long drives for field goals. But we haven't executed the way we'd like when we did have the opportunity. If you look at the stats, our opportunities in the red area are way off from a lot of other teams' opportunities in the red area.

"So, overall, we're not doing as well as we'd like. And if we were doing as well as we'd like maybe we'd have a better record. So we're 4-4 and we have to be better than that, obviously, especially in the division we're in and the conference we're in if we want to get to where we want to be at the end of the year."

Q. Does Chad Pennington have greater freedom to call audibles than Chad Henne and does the list of plays change based on the quarterback change?

A. "Same. Same. The list of plays are based on who we're playing. I don't think we'll have a different scope of things. You obviously know different people see things differently. They read things differently. When it comes down to the quarterback you have judgment that takes place so you might see him do something that you didn't see [Henne] do. You also might see him do something that Chad did do that might not be as good. That's what you live with whenever you make that type of change."

Q. Does the fact you didn't throw deep much with Henne mean the offense is better suited for Chad Pennington?

A. "No, I don't think the reason we've not thrown as deep much with Henne is Henne as much as the defenses we're playing against. They're trying to stack up against Brandon and the few times we have thrown deep, we've only been successful a couple of times. Like last week we hit Brian Hartline on a pump down the sideline for about 35 yards. And we opened up the Vikings game and we got over the top. As soon as we got over the top on the Vikings, they're going to shut that off.

Q. So does that aspect of the offense change?

A. "There will be times when the shots will be there and when they're there, we expect them to be hit."

Q. How does the QB switch affect Henne's standing in the league and ability to come back?

A. "I think if you go back through history, I saw a graphic on this somewhere. When Elway came out in '83, he didn't win as many games as Henne has and he had a lot more interceptions than touchdowns. Steve Young came into the World Football League and flopped to Tampa. After Tampa he got traded to San Francisco. He didn't really start starting until his ninth year. He was pretty good. This guy has come out of the box and he's done some very good things. He hasn't dropped any balls, missed any blocks or missed any tackles. And he has done some things he'd like to have back, so to speak. I've said it before and I'll say it again, there's no reason this guy can't be a good quarterback in this league. He's got the tools. He's got the work ethic to the Nth degree and he is a very tough guy. He's a sensitive guy -- doesn't show that very much. But he is a tough guy and he'll come back from this."

GregZ,
I think you are on to it here. This is not a modern passing offense with Henning calling the shots. The trifecta deemed it ok to enter the season without a vertical passing game. I wonder how they expected to be successful and successfully utilize BM or that matter Ricky and Ronnie without a vertical passing game.

LMAO! Did any of you actually READ this article? Or does the sound of your own opinions and the size of your own egos prevent you from doing so?
Henning tells you what's wrong with the Offence! Any change in the Offence due to a change in QB? No! Which means he won't tailor his offence to use the strengths and minimize the weaknesses of the QB! They have to play within his parameters. And, when they can't, it's an execution problem. Not his fault!
Why can't Brandon Marshall get open? Well, the defences are blanketing him! It's their fault! Not, well, I don't really scheme to get him or any other WR a mismatch on the field. I don't play to their strengths either. They're just X's and O's to me.
Does any of this change your game plan? No, I have a set game plan against a particular team that I go by and intend to stick to it no matter if the other team doesn't, or makes personnel changes, or anything like that. I have my scripted plays and that's what we're gonna do come hell or high water!
Why? Cause I'm a friggen genius! I have Super Bowl rings and I've been doing this since you were in diapers. And, my head coach is a moron that let's me do what I want to do without question!
Any questions? Yes, is that a copy of "Offensive Coordinating Pro Football for Dummies" under your arm? Please move along! Nothing to see here! Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!!! Lol!

DD, I'd MUCH prefer Mando telling Henning to his face that 99% of the posters on his blog HATE HIS GUTS and want him OFF THE TEAM! We don't even want him to be mascot. That would be my dream (that Henning knows our feelings towards him).

Hey Fellas!

Who's in? I got a plan...

We break into Joe Robbie, Land Shark, Sun Life, Empty Sunday, Bad Music Stadium!

We steal the Goal Post... See where I'm goin here? ...

No Goal Post...No FIST PUMP!

We have to score!

So I’m left wondering when teams take away the deep ball from other offensive coordinators, what do they do?
The way Henning tells it, teams have been taking away the deep ball and that's that.

Oregon,

My guess is when other teams take away the deep ball from other OC's, those OC's have the balls, and know how, to try and figure a way to take the deep ball back. At least try.

Henning can't even get mad, take his deep ball and go home...

because that mean old defense took it away from him.

I for one was happy with 4-4, not happy with changing QBs.

Yes Martin, Jim harbaugh. You're from Cali - he has all the earmarks of being the next great head coach. Let's get him. Former long time QB, young, coach's son, develops qbs. I think HE is the best prospect to help Miami next year - even more valuable than whoever we pick in the 1st round next year.

I really hope miami doesn't trade henne until they see him working with a different OC and scheme. Henne is a good QB he's just not being used correctly. I mean we have gone deep less than any other team in the league and the reason is not Henne's arm strength. LEt the kid play.

It's not just the benching of Henne. It's everything with Henning.

Look how long it took for him to finally get over the wildcat. I think I just spoke too soon, it's insane.

2009 our ground game was one of the best. So, lets try alternating them. 8 weeks into the season, no ground game to speak of, but it has nothing to do with Hennings new "alternating wrinkle".

It must be the Quarterback. Hmmmm, we need to be more dynamic, we need someone that can add a spark. Well lets see, all we got left is Pennington and Thigpen?

Dynamic, spark, hmmmmmmm, Penny, Thigpen????

Holy BeJesus, I think I've got it, Penny it is!!!!

Come on, the only thing worse than Dan Hennings playcalling is his "coaching decisions".

Nothing like being a legend in your own mind!

Guitars n Cadillacs... Hillbilly Music...Dwight Yokum

Field Goals n Fist Pumps...Dan Jennings Music- Tony Sparano

Go Phins!

suprised by 4-4, Not at all, in fact thats the best this team has become. A 500 football team, just beat the bad teams or struggling ones barely and lose to the teams that are competing for the real trophy, nah no suprises this year, and that is IS a dissapointment rather than a surprise, and man wouldnt it be nice to have a no huddle offense like the falcons did against the ravens last night, nope cant do that in miami, dead henning doesnt want to change philosiphy to win but Just not to lose!!!!!

Dan Hennings idea of a good time is fist pumpimg to an old Billie Holliday record.

She hasn't recorded since 1932, but everything comes back into style if you stick with it long enough!

I have been a Dolphin fan since 1971. Thru the good and bad.

I have seen Horrible coaching from Jimmy Johnston, Dave Wandstadts, Nick Saban and others.

We thought Bill Parcells was going to be a savior, like like all those coaches before.

In my 40 years as a fan, I do not think I have seen anything as bad as Dan Hennings Offense and the treatment of Chad Henne.

YOUR not going to win this year. The playoffs, its a joke. Even if we make it , were one and done.

Why in the world you you bench your 2nd year franchise QB?

Oh....I do know. Its because HENNING is trying hard to COVER HIS ASS!!!!!!

Get rid of Henning!!!!!

Tired Dolphin fan.

There you are Guys: "FIRE HENNING NOW!!!"

how many QBS in next years draft are thinking man dont pick me miami, i dont want anything to do with that dead henning style of offense, let me go somewhere my skills can actually be put to the teat and where teams change young QBS out for guys that need at least 7 minute drives just to move the football into Fist Pump territory!!!!

The Jason Allen move doesn't seem so bad........on the surface.

The problem is, we had to cut a good special teams player and sign Al Harris because of our coaches/GM's shortsightedness with Will Allen.

De doop de doo, de doop de doo..................

I hate to say it, but it's time for the Owner to earn his keep. As I said before, Ted Leonsis, owner of the Washington Capitals & Wizards, took over these teams, and within 1 season made them legitimate. That's what Ross needs to do here.

Cut the cord with the Parcells gang. Put your own team in there. And make them accountable to YOU.

Parcells just proved why giving somebody TOTAL control of the team, without ANY accountability to anyone, is a bad move. Because if it doesn't work out, that person can just walk away with their money without any investment in the team. Parcells didn't care about Miami, all he cared about was HIS reputation. He didn't want MIAMI to succeed, he wanted to show whatever he touched turned to gold and progress the careers of HIS people.

Well, we got what we got. Now we're back to '07, before the Trifecta. Same story. Team is lousy (not as lousy as Cam's team, but bad enough). Don't have a leader, don't have an identity, and back to square 1.

It's ROSS' team now, he needs to take the reins and do what he thinks is right. Because I'm POSITIVE Ross wants to win a SuperBowl, I'm POSITIVE he has a stake in the Miami Dolphins, therefore, no one better to control Miami's interests. I don't want Parcells or Ireland or Sparano to speak for Miami anymore. I wanna hear from ROSS! Rick Ross, just kidding!

superPHIN,

You're a genius! I never thought of that. I can see it now, even if we ended up in position to take the top qb in the draft, as long as HENNING'S still here that qb pulling a Eli Manning or John Elway on us. Wow!!!

i agree fin fan 4-4 i think is all we could have expected...the combined record of all teams we lost games to is 23 and 8 and all will be playoff teams...would certainly liked to play the Browns and Lions earlier this season....i think the qb switch is overblown and Henne will def be back cause penny is gonna get hurt no question about it...Henne is a pro and all qbs's have had to deal with this stuff in their careers....we put way too much pressure on our qb's as a Marino hangover effect...

Hey Guy!

Armando messed up again!

That couldn't have been Henning at the podium!

He is at the Mummy Exhibit here in Los Angeles!

He has been dead for cunturies!

Go Phins!

Go America at the G-20

Greg Camarillo, Jason Allen, Vonnie Holiday, JT, Matt Roth. We kicked them out on their arses, but they've gotten the last laugh. They're probably saying, "THANK GOD I'm not in Miami anymore. What a dysfunctional team!"

Only one I feel bad for is David Martin. Went from the 1-15 Dolphins to the 0-8 Bills. Don't wish that experience on my worst enemy.

not to mention the fact that we outright beat Pittsburgh so we should really be 5 and 3 after these 8 games and 1 game back of the entire conference...fans HAVE TO EASE UP on this square...Hennng should be shtcanned and the team would improve dramatically....its the coaching not HENNE THE HERO

DC Dolfan,

We especially need to begin hearing from Ross should we lose our next 2 games. He should in the least give us DAN HENNING'S Head!

I love to keep Sparano as our oline coach at season's end. But At season's end Ireland must go too!

MACDANIEL OF denver will be the OC next year ,he will be fired aithout mercy for trading CUTLER TO CHI LAST YEAR .

Tough choice, but if i had to choose right now between 500 and chance of henning staying next year with nothing changing much to winless again at 0-8 with henning fired and changes for the better in the offseason....i would rather be winless, at least then we could start to build NEW hope once again!!!!

ALoco,

McDaniels? Remember he shipped out Brandon Marshall and caused Mike Nolan to leave. Wkae up ALoco!

This guy (Henning) is unbelievable. The more I read his interview, the higher my blood pressure rises. I'm just baffled at why Sparano/Ireland have kept him this long. They've totally drank his koolaid.

LAPhinsPhan,

I believe Sparano has nothing to do with HENNING still be around. Its muy opininion Ireland is protecting him. Every roster move has been going thru Ireland for a while now. A lot of the quirkiness of this team can also be blamed on him.

DB, players in the draft always EYE certian teams in the draft and what kind of style best fits them and the way they can be used, and i promise you if miami goes after a QB in the draft, you can be rest assured that they are gonna have to PAY out big time to keep him happy here in miami if dead henning is still here!!!! Otherwise its just like you said Elway all over again!!!!

4-4, 5-3, it doesn't matter.

Just after winning the AFC East and going one and done in Baltimore, I posted the same thing.

As long as Henning is in charge of this offense, it just doesn't matter. Back then I posted that the better this team gets, the more apparent the "Henning liability" will become. I miss on MOST of my predictions, it's too bad this is the one I have to be right about.

I don't think Henning could take the 72 Dolphins to .500.

He could take your team and lose to his or take his team and lose to yours.

Seriously, what will it take to get rid of Henning? Do we have to go to a humiliating 4-12 for Sparano/Ireland/Ross to wake up?

REPOST

**REAL MEN OF GENIUS**
Today we salute you, Mr. I-Know-It-All-Offensive Coordinator.

It's 4th and 1.
The game is on the line.
You call in a 5 yard loss.
CHORUS: Now that was just poor execution.

It's smash-mouth football you want.
But you didn't bring a knife to a gun fight...no sir,
You brought a spoon. A plastic spoon.
CHORUS: Let me eat my oatmeal.

You're in the red zone,
Why run it in when you can kick it in?
CHORUS: Call in Dan Carpenter!

Textbook definition of insanity?
Uh-uh, you are the epitome of frustration:
Doing the same thing with the same losing result.
CHORUS: But I still know more than you do.

So crack open a cold one, Ultimate Armchair Quarterback because your seat is getting hotter.

With your play calling, your coordination is offensive...to watch.

CHORUS: Mr. I-Know-It-All-Offensive Coordinator

Even the Henning as OC and Nolan as DC is a bad marriage. HENNING's philosophy of getting small leads and shutting down the offense doesnt match well with Nolans philosophy of an attacking defense. On defense your ability to attack is severely limited when playing with small leads all of the time.

All it takes is one big td play by the offense when attacking with the defense to win the game when playing with small leads all of the time. Nolan even knows he's being handcuffed by HENNING.

That is why dolphans I say to you HENNING IS A HUGE PROBLEM FOR OUR ENTIRE TEAM!!!

LaphinsPhan,

It'll be even worse if miami by some miracle gets to the playoffs and is blown out once again, it'll reiterate to this coaching staff that dead henning is still worth keeping around so YES we may need a pourous record in order to get henning THE F outta here!!!

Henning is here because he's Tuna's race-track crony, and neither Sparano nor ireland has the gutz to even rein him in, let along sh*t-can him.

This Regime is as doomed as nero's.

rebuild/qb/coach/gm search, here we come again!

LAPhinsPhan,

If it were left up to Sparano Im sure Henning would be gone. Please stop including Sparano in on this when its only Ireland who has the final say so. Sparano is still a young and green HC and I dont even believe Ireland gives him the power to "OVER RULE" HENNING"S play calling.

I believe Ireland has handcuffs on Sparano(young inexperienced HC) and HENNING has hancuffed our entire team. Think about it.

Coaching staff is learning valuable lessons each day

1. Henning sucks

2. Hartline is not a #2 reciever

3. Henning sucks

4. We have no TE

5. Henning sucks

6. Our running game is allergic to running the football

7. Henning sucks

8. Pennington is not the future, nor should he be the solution

9. Henning sucks

10. Every DB on the team should at the very least know how to catch a football

I would actually be a little in favor of seeing what this team would look like if Sparano had slightly more control with HENNING and Ireland out the door. We may not need a new HC, we may only need a new GM and OC.

Think about it dolfans.

It's nice to see that folks are starting to get it, we don;t have a passing game problem, we have a running game problem. Chad P. can't win every game without a running game, check his history. Henne has not had that luxury this year at all. Get the running game back on track and it won't matter who is QB.

Second; you know why Peyton Manning is so good? He almost is always playing with the lead. The QB's job is much easier when you have the lead. This requires TD's on a regular basis not FG's.

Run the damn ball, make your play action passing game work, get the lead, and then kill the clock. Isn't this the Tuna's recipe?

Where has the home cookin gone Tony and Dan? The Offense won't change, it damn sure better!

DYING, IF I KNEW THAT I WOULD BE ANOTHER THE GREAT DYING BREAD .THAT WOULD BE UNCIVLIZED .

Im really beginning to think Sparano is being played as a pawn by HENNING and IRELAND. Even if all three lose thier job I still believe we need to try and keep Sparano as our oline coach. The guy's pretty good at that. Just like we should have kept Cam Cameron as our OC.

We've also gotta stop throwing the baby out with the bath water!!!

I don't wish any harm on anyone.......most of the time.

Drastic times call for drastic measures. I just made a real life like Dan Henning effigy, anybody know anything about VooDoo?

Forget it, I can't even try too be funny, this shyt is too sad.

Back to my alcohol induced "seclusion"...................

DAN HENNING DOESN'T KNOW THE WORD ....DIGNITY .

Umm, Sparano DOES have control of Henning, he's the HC

With that said, it was also SPARANO's decision to start Henne...

(whether he was influenced or not it's within the scope of the head coaches duty)

I hate when people misplace blame/absolve people of their mistakes

Who starts and who sits is the HEAD COACHE's JOB! THE END

Just wait and see Dolphans,

At the end of the season the regime will be changed and just in the case of Cam Cameron, The baby(Tony Sparano) will be thrown out with the bath water. How great it would've been to have Cam Cameron as our OC right now?

When thie regime is dethroned at season's end I really hope they offer Sparano the oline coach position. If not our ownership has still learned very much from its past.

Would you take a demotion to stay on this team?

I'm not a huge fan of Sparano, but, I think he'd find another job. His overall record is average, but, he's got a rep from being a Parcells guy. He'd prob end up HC of the Cowgirls

I think sparano still wishes in some ways he was still an offensive line coach, No-one gave him this much FUSS over fist pumps before, ah how the world turns against you so fast as a HC!!!!

Marc,

I used to be in defense of you when other badly ridiculed you. Im now beginning to fully understand why.

You have no idea if Sparano is not being handcuffed in authority by Ireland over Henning. Im going by what the evidence seems to show me. Even a kindergartener can see there's a constant problem with HENNING'S decision making. Im sure Sparano does too.

Hey genius, all it takes is just a little common sense to realize that "just possibly" Sparano isnt in a position to "OVER RULE" HENNING. This is Sparano's 1st HC gig ever. Ireland's First GM gig ever too.

Ireland has given HENNING power because he's so afraid HENNING will take his ball and go home just like the big old baby he really is. Ireland being spring-grass green is so afraid of that. If he isnt he sure hasnt shown any balls to prove the contrary.

Marc, just because you dont have the insight to see this doesnt mean everyone else is wrong.

No way Dying. Cam was an idiot. Dolphins made him look good with arm tackles Sunday. Ravens can keep him. Bench Henning and let Henne wing it, the way Buffalo and Atlanta did, we win that game, even with the talent deficit.

If Ireland is kept on as GM next year I could possibly see Sparano being sold up the river and DAN HENNING being made HC next year. Ireland and Henning will some how concoct a story of how everything was handicapped by Sparano.

http://www.baltimoreravens.com/People/Staff/Player_Personnel/Eric_DeCosta.aspx

A possible Ireland replacement?

Marc,

I understand your comment but do you really think Wade Phillips could have fired Jason Garret at any point prior to his own demise?

The command structures in the NFL all have varying degrees of politics involved and none of them are exactly democratic.

I don't know what the inside scoop is within this post Parcells organization. I still just don't see Tony Sporano challenging the living legend Dan Henning.

We need a coup d' etat in Miami!

Agreed, CAM Cam-moron needs to stay right where he is as an OC for baltimore, who knows maybe that holds them back of winning a title, besides i dont want somebody here preaching fail fast and move forward to this offense especially now in times of change!!!!

If you want talent, get somebody from the Pats. Can't stand them, but they run circles around everybody else in the league from a scouting/development perspective. Their draft this year is going to be insane. And they're leading the AFC's toughest division while rebuilding. I think we've got a clear winner in the Parcells/Bellicheat rivalry.

NCFINFAN70,

I respect your opinion. However, Cam Cameron's offense scores td's more often than Henning's. Also Cam Cameron's screen plays against our offense looked far more advanced in design than the screen play designs by Henning.

This can not be disputed it was like comparing the Flintstone era(Henning) to Star Trek(Cameron). The gap between the two OC's was horrendous!!!

ncfinfan, that patriot cupboard has been ravaged to death. baltimore has had a star player management crew for ages.

Look at what this DeCosta guy has done. Nice resume.

I despise Henning's play calls. But the way to beat the Ravens is through the air. Out Henning'ing Henning is not the way to go. And the Dolphins inability to tackle was new and troubling. No credit to Cam or his family for that one.

Pats will never rebuild with tom brady still there, but they do seem to stockpile draft picks every year, I guess thats considered rebuilding, and they seem to get the most out of their offense and they dont even have Diva moss there to screw things up, yes i hate the pats but i do admire the fact that they seem to know how to put a winning team together for over the last decade!!!

dr roberts,

Im sure a Josh McDaniels, Mike Nolan, and Brandon Marshall reunion will be a match made in heaven.

Well there is no way the Dolphins would have considered drafting Ray Rice because he doesn't fit the Parcells stereotype. And he simply killed us. That much is obvious.
