Sean Salisbury: Henne won't ever be elite

Well, as long as I'm telling you what former NFL quarterbacks and current pundits are saying on radio shows about the Miami Dolphins quarterback situation (see previous post), I figured I'd give you Sean Salisbury's take on Chad Henne.

Salisbury visited my radio show, Armando and the Amigo, this week prior to Henne's benching in Miami. And he basically said Henne will be a solid quarterback in this league.

But never an elite quarterback.

Salisbury, as you can hear on the audio file below, agreed with me that Henne is hard to define because of all the problems that have been happening around him during his 21 games as Miami's starter.

"You and I have pretty much been on the same page," Salisbury said. "I got a message this week from a friend and we were talking about it, and I know the people in South Florida are on Dan Henning and the rest of it. But with Chad, I said the same exact thing almost to a T. I said, 'You know what, the jury is still out.' ... I DVR all the games I can't watch live and I watch and then re-watch them during the week. And, you know, at times I look at Chad and say this is a superstar about to happen. And then the next week I say, 'Is he going to be a star? Is he even going to be able to hold down a job? Is this their future?

"And you know, you guys know me, I'm not a fence-sitter. If I thought Chad sucked I'd say, 'They gotta get a new quarterback.' They need to say that in a bunch of different places. I thought he was going to be great, but I don't know. I've watched him enough. I've seen him make enough throws to know the guy can play. But I've also seen him do some things and make some decisions and make some throws and make some boneheaded decisions to say, 'He's a backup in this league.'

" ... So put it this way, Chad Henne is not ever going to be a guy that carries a franchise on his back like Miami's been used to a whole bunch of years ago when No. 13 was there -- that whenever everything else was going wrong, the quarterback will carry you. I think Chad is a really, really good player when he's got people around him that are making plays, also. So if that makes sense, he's not a Kurt Warner. Kurt Warner could carry a team in Arizona. He leaves and they go to hell in a hand basket. There's quarterbacks that can do that. But there's also quarterbacks you say, 'Ok, this is a guy that's good for us. He's going to go 18 out of 27, throw a touchdown, and we're going to be efficient.' I think Chad can be that guy with an every-now-and-then 300-yard spectacular performance.

"I don't believe you're ever going to look at him and say, 'We're going to load it on [his] back and that's going to be on him.' Chad needs to have a team that runs the football and is going to have guys make some plays for him. I don't think he's going to be that guy you say, 'We're going to franchise him or he's worth $50, $60 million.' I don't think he's that quarterback. But I do think he's a starter in this league."

Salisbury addressed other interesting things during the interview. For instance, he believes the Dolphins are going to be a factor going forward.

"I can assure you they will disrupt the playoff picture before they're done," he said.

And, of course, if you are the mood, you can always listen to me live on Armando and the Amigo weekday mornings from 6-10 a.m. on 640-Sports in South Florida, or live streaming online here or off the podcast that is available on iTunes and the site (check the site for the link.)

IF WE DON'T GO TO THE PLAYOFFS , WHO'S IN THE TEAM NOW WHO HAS A TALENT TO SPOT OUR FIRST AND SECOND DRAFT PICKS ?

DO WE NEED TO HIRE SOME ONE FOR THAT JOB ?
IRLEND AND THE COACHING STAFFE ARE NOT GOOD AT DRAFTING .

DO WE BORROW BILICHICK FOR A DAY ?

QB MUST BE NO 1 AND 2 DRAFT PICKS NO MORE UGLY FAT DEFENSE MEN .

I guess its the media's job to report different opininons on the Dolphins but not from a never has been quaterback like Sean Salisbury. Does anybody count the number of dropped passes by our receivers against the Ravens? Maybe we should bench all of our receivers and put somebody else in also. Maybe we should try to put somebody on the tailback coming out of the backfield wide open every cotton picking play. Maybe we should try to tackle McGahee instead of looking for him to have a heart attack before he runs into the end zone. We need to reach back and find some heart and come out in the second half of the season as franchise on the way up. These are our Dolphins lets get behind them and take this thing on to the playoffs like Marshall said, we can do it.

What happens if Pennes arm comes off and travels further then the ball? Where do u mark the spot??

What do they know?

ARMANDO MUST HAVE TOUGH TIME FILLING JUESTS IN HIS SHOW TO INVITE SALISBURY .

P.S.......MR SOILED WOULD A GREAT JUEST .

BOBBYD12, THE TICKETS ARE SELLING FAST FOR SUNDAY .

Oh, Jesters, Aloco, you mean Jesters.

That's what we need, sell tickets, for Miami Fans.

WHAT OSCAR ?

In Internet, if you don't want to make a fool of yourself, you have to check the Dictionary.

Oscar you said you were nervous about the spread? It's off the board,so It looks like Vegas likes Pennington At the outset of the week weren't the Titans -2.5?

-1.5, DD. Yes, I am nervous.

whate ever who made sean salsbury the QB guru. I think henne can be very good. he does need to work on his leadership qualitities and we do need to get him in a different system. The dan henning 1920 system doesn't work for him and his arm strength. I like henne.

bobby, that was classic, hahahaha.

Newton will be gone by our turn in the draft.

But wouldn't it be nice to have a Chris Johnson-type speed back? With a big 'ole line opening holes for him? I predict we get a back in the first round.

ALoco,

Problem with this regime and thier drafting is that they seem dead set at drafting anyone experts or fans think are a perfect fit for the team. Thier egos only allowed them to seek out "so-called gems" that were never seriously on anyone elses draft radar.

They relish in thier vain glories seeking more headlines about how great they are instead of really focusing on what really might be best for this team. Sad thing is it hasnt worked yet and they refuse to turn away from obviously failing course. They are egomaniacs to the umpteenth degree.

fyi, clock hits midnight and the warpaint goes on and I go Donald Rummy ("with the team I got").

Yeah, my QBs passes look like the floating jellyfish in Avatar, but he's accurate damnit. Let's roll! Maybe Ronnie will show up, hell, stranger things have happened. Hopefully he's gone straight, cause he's had more zigzags than a Halloween basket.

Watch out Marshall. Don't catch too many passes. Henning, always one step ahead, will think the Titans will come up with a way to stop that, so he'll go to a fade pass in the endzone to Davone Bess, the shortest member of the offense.

Seriously, aqua and orange, midnight, put it in your pipe.

DYING, I DON'T SEE ROSS TRUSTING THEM W/NEXT DRAFT .

DYING, WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF WE LOSS SUNDAY ?

ALoco,

Proof of my above mentioned post is instead of drafting a NT we move a pro bowl calibre DE to NT and use a 1st rd pick to replace a position nevr needed replacing. Although Koa Misi is ok, we take a huge gamble on a 2nd rd pick on a guy virtually no one ever heard of until draft day. Then ignoring need of a TE draft a guard thats sparingly played the entire first half of the season.

The rest of 2010 draft class is either injured or we've had borderline production from at best and I dont even wanna mention previous drafts. We all know several different entire books can be written on each of those alone.

Probably under fire from Ross they finally went out and signed 2 sure things(Dansby and Marshall)for the 1st time they've been here.

Aloco,

Unless we make the 2nd rd of the playoff(which Im pessimistic we'll make the playoffs at all), at least Ireland and Henning are out. Henning will probably just retire at season's end because he knows the handwriting's on the wall anyway.

David Lee may keep his job as qb coach and Tony Sparano maybe at least offered to remain as oline coach. If we have a terrible offensive performance Sunday Im hoping HENNING is fired Monday morning and David Lee is made interim OC.

DYING,

I SEE YOU R REALLY INTO THE DRAFT ALREADY .I THINK TO GO TO THE PLAYOFFS FIRST STEP IS TO WIN NEXT 2 GAMES ,TITAINS AND CHI .
WHO ARE THE PROVEN PEOPLE IN THIS LEAGUE WHO CAN HELP US NEXT DRAFT AROUND?

BUT IF WE LOSE SUDAY THAT MEAN THE SEASON IS OVER AND EVERY BODY SALSA SO WE SHOULD START LOOKING FOR A NEW TEAM B/C SPARANO WILL GET ANOTHER HC SOME WHERE ELSE ,BESIDE HE WILL NOT ACCEPT TO BE DEMOTED .

DB,

I was going to argue a little, but you totally distracted me with the HENNING is fired Monday morning thing.

Thanks, I know it's a long shot, but at least I have something to wish for.

FIRE HENNING NOW!!!!

WE ALWAYS WISH ONE THING AND WE GET ANOTHER ,I THINK WE WILL WIN SINCE YOUNG ISN'T PLAYING .

ODIN, WHAT DID YOU HAVE FOR DINNER ?PLEASE DON'T SAY CHICKEN .

ALoco,

IMO, drafting really doesnt take hiring that next genius. What I think is key, first of all you have to properly assess your team needs, then priority. Then I believe the GM, HC, OC, and DC all have too check thier egos at the door. Then just go after the best available player based on first priority then need.

Also make sure you've evaluated every possible scenario surrounding the player you eventually draft. You dont draft unexpected players like this regime does just so you're able to hear how great you are "IF" this player succeeds. That seems like more of a recipe for failure than success as they are currently fastly proving.

I hope Nolan has the defense on point.

As soon as Pennington falters, we kick four field goals and lose by two, Tony will be looking for another scape goat!

Henne has the physical tools to be elite. At this point his main problem is that the game is going faster than he can follow. He is slow going through his progression then when great protection gives him time he stares down his receiver - making it easy for the Ed Reeds of the world to intercept him. This is reality now although it may improve with time. The reality is that people are ragging on Hennington but at this point in his career, Henne has to be in a conservative dink and dunk offense because he is not up to the speed in the game to play aggressively. He is getting better with each game but he is a game manager not a game winner. I see the substitution of Pennington as being like Philadelphia's substitution of Vick. Pennington can win now and turn this around now. That does not mean that Kolb is not the QB of the future but just that Philly needs what Vick brings right now and Kolb needed some time to read film, watch and get his act together. Meanwhile if Pennington really ignites the offense, the "execution" problems ends, the team pulls together it says that the key issue is bringing Henne up to speed or finding a replacement for the long term. If Pennington cannot get this team to execute its offense it says we need to focus on bringing in other players - a TE who can catch, a fast young RB, and some interior OL help.

I have alot of respect for Penne and even liked him, dare I say, while he was playing for the Jests.

I am in the minority in thinking that benching our future was a mistake. But I bleed aqua and orange and will yell and scream at the game tommorow.

I have tried to think of the positives that could come out of this. The best I can come up with is Penne will play better in this dink and dunk maximum protect offense.

As far as Henne is concerned I have to make myself believe that this type of offense is actually hurting his devolpement and when we get a new innovative OC down here he will blossom.

Aloco,

Also say if I were a GM on draft day. My team's top need is a CB. But if the cb is like the 35th ranked player in the entire draft OK? So there's also a TE ranked 15th best player in the entire draft. What do you do?

Here's what I would do. If that TE is a huge upgrade over my present TE I take the TE instead even though cb is the top priority. Because if my cb is that terrible I can always pick up something slightly better in final cuts or make a trade to upgrade that position even if not greatly its better than what it was.

Plus adding a great TE may even allow me to raise my team's points per game average to offset any extra points my cb position gives up. If I can still at least get a wash the problem kind of alleviates itself.

I really don't see how our offense won't improve with this change.

WHY DO I FEEL IF TUNA HAD THE SAY BEFORE HE LEFT HE WOULD NENCHED HENNE AFTER THE JETS GAME ?

Oscar,

It will improve, just not to the level neccessary to beat the good teams.

Student1776,

In 2010, Steve Young said one of the primary problems he see's with Henne isnt that he's going thru his progressions "too slow" he's going thru "too fast." Guess it blows your theory out of the water. He's a hof qb therefore should know.

Tennessee has a great pass rush. We'll definitely get to see what the o-line is all about. And embarrassed for Henne to say Penne is probably the more mobile QB at the ripe age of 34.

Do you guys think now that Parcells is out of the equation the Phins will ditch that crazy prototype requirement that they like to use? What I didn't understand is that with this thinking, any athletic obvious new style tight end will end up in enemy hands. This thinking or strategy eliminates players that could be difference makers, all because of an outdated philosophy.

How about Sunday, JB.

Oscar Canosa,

At best Im a little optimistic possibility exists we could average 3pts more per game. However possibility exists one day I could win the Powerball drawing. So Im very "guardedly optimistic" about both propositions.

I believe the only thing Henne is lacking is leadership qualities and just enough time to get the game experience to be a "good" QB.

He isn't very emotional, he kind of reminds me of Eli. HMMM........I think he has some bling on his finger.

Tough call Oscar, I still have visions of the Baltimore playoff game and the first 3 games of last year. But I am going to remain optimistic and believe the surrounding players will play harder for Penne.

Well, a la Joe Willie Willie, I Guarantee a win by the Dolphins. You can write it down.

Henne/Penne. Allen/Harris. The REAL question is: Pacquiao or Margarita?

DB, THAT'S VERY THOUGHTFUL ,DO YOU THING A QB'S IS IN THE CARDS FOR EIRST DRAFT PICK ?

Darryl Dunphy,

Nothing at all wrong with the approach this regime has. Just seems this regime fails to realize that with the 3yds and cloud of smoke you also need a little lightning. We did it very successfully in the early 70's but the lightning we had was Mercury Morris from the backfield and Paul Warfield at wr.

We also had TE's who were great route runner with great hands in Jim Mandich and Marv Flemming, who by the way had a couple pro bowl seasons before coming over from the mighty 60's Green Bay Packers.

We also had one of the best 3rd down specialist in the business at that time in Jim Kiick, especially out of the backfield. We placed great pressure on defenses in all phases of the offensive game. We werent just "3yds and a cloud of dust" as we are famously advertised.

Isn't Aaron Kampman out?(did I spell his last name right) That would be a good break for us. He is a good pass rusher, and excellent against the run.

Dear Mr. Salguero

Since Roger Goodell ruled its ok to spit on Channing Crowder do you think Chris Johnson will spit on Channing Crowder to try and draw a penalty ?

Can Channing Crowder spit back without drawing a penalty ?

If I were the Dolphins I would expect wet playing conditions at the least.

Soiled :)

I hate to say it,but this Salisbury guy is 100% correct.LMAO.I'm sick of these fools who have done nothing in the NFL get paid to give us their meaningless opinions.
You fools that agree with him are,well....foolish.Get a grip losers.

BEEMDRUMS, SEEMS ARMANDO'S SHOW ONLY INVITE THE LOSERS AND KISS AS A CROWD .

Marv Fleming was a very good tight end but Lombardi "didn't like him".

I don't mean to insult my fellow Finfans, but sometimes you guys make it necessary.

Aloco,

It would be a very difficult for this present regime too draft a qb 1st rd. It would be a blatant admission we should have taken Matt Ryan over Jake Long. If they are still in place after this season I really dont see thier HUGE egos even allowing them to do this.

Unless Andrew Luck is available I dont see a real viable reason to do it either. Kellen Moore is only 6'0ft 187lbs and doesnt have a rifle. I love everything about Cam Newton but he doesnt take snaps from center and drafting him 1st rd may end up being a project itself from this alone, let alone the things a qb pocket ready needs too learn to perform on the nfl level.

After Andrew Luck drafting any other qb first rd seems to be a bit of a gamble. It may take a year or two just to get them up to Chad Henne's speed. So we're talking 2013 before we can even have a decent qb. Its more beneficial to continue to develop Henne unless he shows sign of falling flat on his face.

Best way to assure Andrew Luck is first overall pick and you klnow what that means.

Dying- I just think that sometimes when you are trying to find those prototypes, you can miss what is right in front of you. I completley agree with your thoughts about taking the best player available. A lot of teams go with this statetgy, and I think it leaves a much broader window of player to choose from insead of a outlined prototype philosophy. Now obviously the phins believe they are taking the best player under their guidelines. I would like to see them take a more relaxed approach to their selection process. (I guess that gets you P. White and P.Turner Lol)

DB,WHY A QB NEEDS AYEAR OR TWO .WE GET A QB AND HE GOES TO WORK RIGHT AWAY LIKE SANCHEZ AND MATT RYAN

ALoco, Sanchez had a whole team around him. He didn't have to do much but hand-off to some stud RBs, throw a short pass every now and then.

I'm convinced it's all on the OC. The receivers are there (maybe with the addition of a speed guy), the line is there. Just need a TE and the right OC and the offense can click.

DC, TELL ME WHY HENNE DIDN'T CLICK IN THE RED ZONE ?

Aloco,

Of course if we had the #1 overall pick and he's Andrew Luck he starts right away. I was saying after Andrew Luck we may not be able to do that. Luck is pro ready right now. He can make all the throws and everyone raves his study habits are "Peyton-like."

Henne needs work in all areas, period.

Thats's not the problem though. Learning and developing is expected of any young Quarterback.

The problem is, how can you develop the skills to be an elite NFL quarterback when the only playbook you're subjected too is an archaic Chicago Cardinals 1936 collectors item?

Other than formations, he doesn't have the touch pass down. Penne will definitely help with, like that pass to Fasano back of endzone. That's what Penne excels in. Fasano will be getting more looks with Penne in there, if Henning ever lets him go out for a pass.

If Henne can learn the touch pass, he'll be a lot better.

Aloco,

Of course if we had the #1 overall pick and he's Andrew Luck he starts right away. I was saying after Andrew Luck we may not be able to do that. Luck is pro ready right now. He can make all the throws and everyone raves his study habits are "Peyton-like."

Frankly, I'm more interested to find out if the defense can tackle tomorrow. Our offense isn't good enough to point up big points against anyone right now, especially not a team with a great defense, so it will probably be a defensive battle. So our d needs to step up, Vontae got Moss, they need a SPY on CJ, and TACKLE for the Love of God!!!

BOTTOM LINE ,IF YOU HAVE A GOOD QB YOU R A GREAT COACH AND IF YOU DON'T IT'S BETTER GO FARMING SOME WHERE .
