« Dolphins implode, lose 34-27 to Detroit | Main | Sparano: Henne didn't grade out poorly »

A stream of conscientiousness post about ... everything

So everyone wants blood.

After a 1-7 home record in 2010, it is clear the Dolphins not only need significant changes, they will make significant changes. But I wish I could report to you the changes will be the right ones done by the right people.

If today you are in the camp wanting Tony Sparano and Jeff Ireland ousted, I am not with you. I still think those guys can get it done, although they make it harder to believe and defend every time Miami plays, particularly at home.

Let me present to you some facts about making a change so high up the organizational ladder:

First, who is owner Stephen Ross turning to for advice so that he makes a sound decision? He is not turning to Bill Parcells. Parcells put Ireland and Sparano in their current jobs and even he understands if you win, you stay employed. If you lose, you're out. Parcells would be a good voice for Ross to listen to. He knows football, the Big Tuna does. Parcells brought Mike Nolan to the Dolphins when the defense was broken. Maybe he can suggest an offensive coordinator to fix the offense. Maybe he can suggest another coach or GM, if that's what Ross absolutely must have. Or maybe Parcells can talk sense to Ross about Sparano and Ireland.

But Parcells and Ross don't typically discuss Ireland and Sparano. Oh, they talk, but usually it's about other topics such as labor issues. That seems such a waste of Parcells to me. But that is the way it currently stands.

So who is in Ross's ear?

Friend and former Kansas City Chiefs President Carl Peterson? How many Super Bowls did he win? Do the Chiefs, who just won the AFC West, miss him?

CEO Mike Dee? He's a marketing genius and something of a baseball guy. If I wanted to fill Fenway Park, I know he'd be the guy to turn to. But that's not the assignment. The assignment is to fill Miami's trophy mantle.

Vice Chairman and Partner Jorge Perez? He's a very good friend of Ross's and has his ear. But Perez is a builder of building not NFL teams. His NFL experience and acumen is approximately zero.

Marc Anthony? Emilio Estefan? Gloria Estefan? Fergie? Serena Williams? Venus Williams? Which one of these brilliant football minds should Ross listen to with a sense that they know what needs to be done going forward?

Look, if the idea is for Ross to do the popular thing, then he should go ahead and simply listen to the fans. They want Jon Gruden. They want Bill Cowher.

Both will sell tickets.

But Gruden has had zero success when he has to build a team. And Cowher only reminds me of a more accomplished Tony Sparano in his football philosophy. Both, of course, would bring their own GM types. Gruden's past GMs have been terrible. Cowher's better, but only after years and years of patience.

Which one of those two guys comes with a franchise quarterback?

Oh, neither one. Well then, the change would be a waste, in my opinion. Simply the Dolphins will continue to struggle under any coach until the team has a star quarterback. It hasn't had one since around 1994ish. And so the Dolphins have been in a relative funk since 1995ish.

Solve the QB issue, you solve myriad issues. Don't solve the QB issue and I say it will not matter who the coach and GM are.

And since you are reading this, Mr. Ross, this is what I would do: Sit Tony Sparano and Jeff Ireland down and tell them to find a QB. No excuses. They failed in not drafting Matt Ryan. They failed in picking Chad Henne. They failed in picking Pat White.

They get one more chance this offseason. Find the quarterback or they're done. No excuses.

I assume those marching orders would motivate these two to scour free agency, consider any trade seriously, and be willing to do that which no Dolphins organization had done lately during the draft -- trade up.

All those should be on the table for the sake of adding a franchise quarterback. Without one, it doesn't matter if Ross is able to bring back a cloned 40-year-old Don Shula. No coach can win in today's NFL without a quarterback.

That should be Job One. Forget about firing the head coach. Hire a franchise QB and the head coach will get instantly smarter.

That's my two cents.

But wasn't Bill Parcells who decided to get Ireland and Sparano to form a wise decision to get Henne/Pat White? If we're going to that road again next year, I believe the same losing ways will continue.

you are an idiot....this organization needs to wipe the slate clean. AGAIN...but this time they need to get a REAL coach, who wont run when things get a little tough. Like Jimmy Johnson and Nick Saban.

Armando.. Like you said. Sparano is making it very difficult to trust he can get this turned around. I'm not sure that he has done enough to merit his coaching position. If I were a football mind, I would be in the buisness. I'm not, and my opinion is just that. Perhaps Sparano gets a little bit more of a pass then he deserves because he was hired by a well respected football mind. I ask this. If Sparano was to get sacked. Would he be on a short list of candidates to fill a head coaching void? My thought is no. He is like many of the personel here. He has little or no value outside of this orginization(again from a head coaching point) The way the season has played out is the most bothersome. It would be different if we had started 0-5 and battled back to 7-8. But go back to the Chicago game, and we had a very good shot to make a run at the playoffs. On paper we had made it through the toughest part of our schedule. We were coming off an inspired victory where Sparano made the best choice he has made all season. Starting Penny. He was hurt, and Henne played what I thought was his best game of the season, perhaps of his career. Injuries hakted the momentum. But the coaching job, gameplan, or lack of in the Chicago game was PATHETIC!! In any buisness. You are only as good as the leadership at the top. This falls on Sparanos shoulders. Even more then Henne. I have little faith in Sparano, or his future here. He might be a good guy. But I think it would be prudent to begin a coaching search.

THE SAME OL SAME..HERE WE GO AGAIN.IF IT WASN'T FOR CHAD P AND THE WILDCR@@P ..MORANO WOULD HAVE BEEN GONE A LONG TIME AGO..QUATERBACKS ARE HARD TO FIND..SO COACHING WINS GAMES ..BEING READY .A GREAT GAME PLAN..A COACH THAT MOTIVATES..MORANO IS NOT A NFL COACH!IF WE KEEP HIM ..HE'LL BE GONE NEXT YEAR ANYWAY..

Do you think Peyton Manning would like to go to the sidelines in order to let the offense run the wildcat?... Me either, get a good OC then maybe the franchise QB suddenly get off the bench

wrong -

look, Suprano was an offensive line coach before this gig. It's not Don Shula we are talking about here.

He does not have the mind of a HC. A proactive HC would have fired Pasquilini last year BEFOR the season imploded. Same for Henning this year.

Suprano is not very smart...goes with the flow and has a "safe" play mentality. These last three games were winnable with the proper coaching even WTH Chad Henne. No wildcat, open up the offense, etc.

In addition to poor coaching, personnel moves are equally responsible for this mediocre team.

A- reshuffling a dominent offensive line from last year in preseason placed more pressure on Henne and the offense.

B-trading Ted Ginn and not finding a game breaker WR

C-Jason Allen as starter cost us the Jets game. Eventually released. Probably should have been kept for the nick or dime packages.

D- Carpenter may be a good LB, but has no clue in blocking. Placed him
to block NE's bedt st player for blocks cost us the Patriots game and contributed to Jets loss

T
Suprano is not very bright. He unfortunately is a follower and not a leader.

Sparano needs to be fired. End of story. Armando you where the same idiot that didn't want Cam Cameron fired either.

I THINK ARMANDO IS SCARED OF HAVING TO ASK BILL COWHER ?'S..

Armando, I predicted the 1-7 home record, as well as the Titans being the only win, as well as calling the outcome of the last 13 games. Here's the proof.

http://www.finnation.com/Forums/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=651

I'm done with Henne! I was giving him the bennefit of doubt. I was willing to give him one more year under a new OC. Not anymore. They need to blow up the entire offense. As far as Sporano, I'm numb. We will be rebuilding another 3 year organizational project either this offseason or the next.

Good.

At least Somebody is talking some sense.

The ONLY fear is that this Owner may still take his advice from the WRONG PEOPLE.

Its still early...

We, as Fans,
don't know whether we've got

Dan Rooney,

Daniel Snyder

or..
Al Davis
.
.

Also, Ross needs to dump all the people Armando has him listening to, because the fans really DO know what's best for this team more than any of those clowns. I'd even suggest Ross can himself but there's that whole team owner thing getting in the way unfortunately.

Not only do Sparano and Ireland need to go, this organization needs a complete--and I mean COMPLETE--housecleaning. Scouts, medical staff, secretaries, PR people, even the groundskeepers, they ALL need to go. Tear the whole thing down and build back up again from the foundation. And if trading somebody like, say, Wake is what it takes to get that franchise QB then do it.

....additionally, when you have the potential for an upgrade to a sp wining coach from an offensive line coach you make the move.

Cowher is smarter than Suprano. I could not see him keeping Pasqualiny last years as the team kept making the same mistakes on defense of Henning this year with his predictable offensive and wildact at the most inopportune times.

Also feel that Cowher has won a SB and has probably learned what it takes to reach that level much sooner than it did the first time around. Suprano doesn't have a clue.

Gruden - many from Tampa Bay will tell you that the team was handcuffed with salary cap issues before he came there. Keep in mind that his last year his DC left before the end of the season to take college job and the team floundered

Either coach is incredibly superior to a glorified offensive line coach who even managed to screw that up this year. I say get rid of the impostor. The team won in spite of him, not because of him.

DON'T LISTEN TO ARMANDO ROSS, FIRE EM ALL.

it is true that miami needs a new qb. what disturbs me is that the coach and upper management failed so miserably in their evaluation of henne. parcells certainly recognized this, as evidenced by his early exit. and lets not forget that henne was benched, and we wouldn't be having a conversation about what happened today and in recent weeks if pennington's should was not frayed. that is to say, the powers at be had already come to the conclusion that henne was not the best qb on the roster, and did not give miami the best chance to win. so, in a sense, there has already been a referendum on henne. but there has to be a thorough evaluation of all of the roster moves, which I am sure ross will make. the musical chairs played with the offensive line was very damaging, and this seems to be on sparano. this incessant drafting of defensive lineman and plodding, slow linebackers wreaks of tunnel vision. sparano is not quick on his feet, as is obvious by now. it is reasonable to think that this lack of acumen does affect his decision making on the field, and at a minumum, it does not inspire confidence. one final thought. sparano has been in the shadow of parcells many of parcells former coaches went on to much success in the nfl. but how many of them were followed by parcells to their new jobs, and their offensive coordinator picked for them? even if sparano wanted to challenge henning, did he have the authority to do so?

So Greg Cote says to stay the course with Henne, and Armando says stay the course with Sparano and Ireland, so it looks like 7-9 next year too everyone. GREAT F'KING IDEA!!!

I like Sparano, but if we need to give the HC job to Nolan to keep him, do it.

I've lost confidence in Henne, but he's under contract another year. Let him compete for the job and let him do it without handcuffs. they way they use him reminds me of how Jimmy "ego" Johnson used Marino in his last year. A QB needs to have balls and not be too afraid to let er rip!

Henning will retire, so let's find a young upcoming OC or Norv Turner if the Chargers cut him loose. he's old but good.

We need to keep Ronnie and Ricky if he wants to play again. Although Ricky should be a clear backup and not a 50/50 split.

Davone Bess is awesome as a chain mover, but not a punt returner!!! He's a little too slow for that job.

Now as for this blog, it's my favorite stop on the net. Armando you do an excellent job and all these people who call you an idiot should go over to the Sun-Sentinel and read some of that garbage.

Crappy New Year!

YAAAA!!! Field Goals, Fist Pumps, Interceptions, and 4th quarter meltdowns next year too!!! GREAT PLAN!!!

Sorry Armando I have to disagree, you are asking the same people who not only selected Henne, to find his replacement? Are you kidding? Sparano is most likely a nice guy, but nice guys don't make great Headcoach's. You ask whom Ross should ask....ask Shula. Shula has done more for the Dolphins than ANY other person...he knows more about football than all the idiots the Dolphins have had to replace him...and I trust Shula to be honest with his advice. The Dolphins need a young offensive headcoach, keep Nolan as the Defensive coach and look for a QB that has size and a decent arm thats also mobile enough.
If I had the right to pick in the next draft, I would take Mark Ingram in the first round, trade my 2012 first round pick and take a receiver in the second round and with the third rounder I would select QB Colin Kaepernick...he's 6'6" 230 runs very well and has improved every year he has played in college plus he has played in an aggressive style offense...something surely lacking with the Dolphins.

I'm glad fisheyepete's not running the draft for us this year, but it probably is better than the Ireland plan for 2011... Trade down, and stockpile more d-lineman

M.Singletary has been fired !! I do not know what Mr.Ross is waiting for ? is time to get an early start on the New Year party !!! I've seen enough of Henne, Sparano, and Henning, they are NOT the Three Muskateer, Not the Three Amigos, definitely the Three Stooges..

The "TriDummies" are a failure.

look at the OC - Henning - sucks and will retire
Pasqualiny DC- fired last year
Idiot - Special teams coach -fired this year

What makes you think Suprnago and Prostitute boy are any better?

1-7 sats it all. Fire them now!!!

You're asking two guys that have already drafted two busts at the QB position with Henne and White to make a third decision. Wake up Armando.

"That should be Job One. Forget about firing the head coach. Hire a franchise QB and the head coach will get instantly smarter.

That's my two cents.
__________________________
It was MY 2 cents the past 3 days on every Fins blog i posted to.
One name you left out as an ADVISOR...DON SHULA HIMSELF!!...though i'm not sure what he could say that Ross watching vid clips of the Fins constant screw ups, time mismanagement, poor player personnel decisions, and YES, horrible QB picks...both Henne and White.
And you want Parcells, the guy that made those picks (c'mon, you KNOW Parcells made those picks)to ADVISE Ross.
BTW, how can you so easily forgive parcells taking millions for just making infrequent, non football related calls to Ross?

Mando, I've always felt you you be a "man of the people, but this column does not in any way appear populist.

I've never been one to support change for the sake of change, especially with 4 HC's in 7 years(!) but Sparano's blind loyalty out of fear to Henning is enough to convince me change is necessary.

ARMANDO GROW A SPINE AND GET A CLUE...THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO WAY THAT SPARANO, HENNE, OR IRELAND SHOULD BE BACK...IMO SPARANO HAS SEALED HIS FATE BY NOT SHOWING THE BALLS TO MAKE TOUGH DECISIONS WHEN THEY ARE WARRANTED LIKE FIRING PASQUALONI LAST YEAR AND HENNING THIS YEAR...AND THE REASON IS DUE TO HIS PERSONAL RESPECT AND RELATIONSHIP COUGH COUGH HE'S FRIENDS WITH THEM AND PUTS HIS PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH THEM BEFORE THE SUCCESS OF THE TEAM!!! HE IS A FAT SLOB COWARD, A TERRIBLE LEADER, AND CAN'T EVEN PUT A DECENT 0-LINE ON THE FIELD LET ALONE AN OFFENSE THAT CAN SCORE 21 PTS A GAME...GIVE ME A BREAK IF THIS GUY DOESNT GET FIRED???

WELL IF HE DOESN'T, I HOPE MR. ROSS ENJOYS SEEING AN EMPTY STADIUM BECAUSE NOBODY WANTS THIS FAT F*CK BACK ON THE SIDELINES WITH HIS PARCELLS FUPA...SPARANO IS A JOKE OF A HUMAN AND DOESN'T DESERVE THE SALARY NOR THE ATTENTION HE RECEIVES IN SUCH A POSITION...HE SHOULD BE COACHING D-III OR NAIA IN THE MID-WEST...

PLEEEEEASE ROSS FIRE THIS GUY AND GIVE US FANS SOMETHING TO ENJOY FROM THIS SEASON PLEEEEEASE!!!!!

I realize it was H Wayne who gave up the bank for Parcells, but it still does not excuse Parcells and Ross for allowing a bully like parcells to screw us so egregiously.

harking back to your "Rex/Tony" morality blog, IMO Parcells behavior is EVERY BIT as immoral, at least from a business standpoint, than anything Rex has done out of stupidity.

Fire the DJ

NOT the HEAD COACH !!
.
.

The "head coach" is an idiot. The "head coach" is responsible. The buck stops at the HEAD COACH EVERYWHERE IN SPORTS. What an idiotic article.

Yeah, give Sparano one more year and pass up the opportunity to get Cowher, who was in the playoffs 10 out of 15 years. Moronic.

Yes he'll need a QB. So will Sparano, that's irrelevant because it's a given.

ROBO-Dude

Ok...but who (out there) is better ??

Any ideas?
.
.

Dumbass Armando! Do it your way next season we still suck, Sparano/Ireland still get fired, and we've missed out on a golden HC prospect to boot!

Ask yourself, what top rated OC is coming to work for what's essentially a "lameduck" coaching staff. Keep Sparano/Ireland and David Lee maybe our best OC prospect. No one else wants to come here and be part of a one year only train wreck!

I am truly done with this team, 15+ years of frustration and disappointment has taken their toll one me.

Don't really care that much anymore...

Armando,

Would you leave the Herald to go write for newspaper that may go under in a year's time? So why do you think a top OC would want to come and work for Sparano/Ireland?

If Sparano/Ireland are hear next season I so see David Lee or another offensive subordinant being promoted to OC.

Keep Nolan as DC first and foremost.

Find NEW OC. STOP playing for field goals. If Carpenter wasn't so reliable, they would be shooting for the end zone more, rather than just better field position to set up a field goal. It makes me sick seeing those f'ing fist pumps after a field goal.

Sorry, but Henne has to go. It's one thing to play with composure, but I see ZERO fire when I watch this guy play. There is no SENSE of URGENCY with him.
If Henne had to be intercepted, I would rather see it happening (if it had to happen at all) while he was trying for the end zone instead of another check down pass.
He misses way too many open receivers both in passes and just not seeing them open period.

It's been absolutely exhausting watching this team... and not in a good way.

Hell my biggest problem with Sparano is he lacks one of the most important abilities a HC must possess. That's gameday coaching, he hasnt improved in 3 seasons and continues to make the same mistakes like he doesnt have a clue!

Armando said it right...

Cowher is a MORE ACCOMPLISHED version of SPARANO.

Even Cowher himself commented (in September) that the Dolphins practice "very similar" to the way that the Steelers do.

Give this guy (Sparano) a chance..
.

Mando,

Im just not sold on the QBs in this draft. I think we should get Matt Flynn, maybe one older Vet and draft a late round QB. Start a QB competition and by the 2nd preseason game(4th, whatever we will have next year) we should know who we got. Deduct 20 points off henne's final assessment just in case he makes the team as a 3rd string.

If anyone here were a top OC. Would you leave what you're doing now to come work for a lameduck HC? If you're not employed right now you're probably not a top OC! LOL............

If you read Armando's Sparano vs Rex Ryan article then you already know he's of unsound mind! LOL..............

Dying,

My problem with Lee is his results. He is the QB coach for one of the worst QB squads in the NFL. Isnt some of that on him? White may have been a bad pick...but he got a lot worse here. Henne may have been bad...but he played with a lot more confidence and could throw the deep ball early.

What happened? This coaching staff for one im completely positive.

people underestimate the negative impact david lee has had on the miami offense. first, he has been responsible for henne's (lack of) development. second, lee was the qb coach at arkansas when darren mcfadden and felix jones made the wildcat popular and ran it to perfection. arkansas ran the wildcat because these were exceptional athletes (as has been proven in the nfl), and perhaps more to the point, arkansas had no viable option at qb. lee brought this thinking to the nfl. and while it surprised the patriots, it had no chance of succeeding long term. if nothing else, the fact that miami kept returning to the wildcat in crucial situations against fast nfl defenses shows just how much they lack confidence in henne. henning, lee, and henne have to go, since i think the latter has been ruined.

It was a HUGE mistake to make a guy who hasnt even had OC nor DC experience a HC. Its a freaking miracle things havent been even more disastrous than theyve been.

Time to move on!

Well stated Armando.

Austin,

I agree.

Dyingbreed,

The only reason a good OC would come here...HC opportunities. Everyone knows we have one of the worst Os in the league and possibly the worst starting QB now that Delhomme is back where he belongs(same for Anderson).

If our new OC did what Nolan has accomplished...he becomes the next Norv Turner. Endless opportunities even if not deserved.

YAYA,

Thats what Im talking about. If we keep Sparano/Ireland we also pigeon hole ourselves into hiring an OC from within or bringing an experienced college guy. No top rated nfl OC is coming here to work for what would seem like a lameduck coaching staff.

They want more longterm job security than one season! LOL...............

Great stuff, man. You changed my mind...

One question though. If we get Cohwer, would that mean a shot at Big Ben?

I've been a Dolphin fen for 40 years. Played optimist ball against the oldest shula.I know football. As I watch the Dolphins this year and I see the head coach run out on the field celebrating a field goal... a field goal. It's no wonder these guys are such underachievers. Players take there expectations from the head coach. Tony may be a nice guy but he's no leader. And could you imagen being in the huddle with that dead fish Henne. No leaders. Just dead fish and cheerleaders.

Sparano is far from a disaster.

He should stay.

Remember:
The teams that CLEAN HOUSE, every three years, NEVER WIN!
.
.

Dyingbreed,

I cant argue that lol. I like their drafts pretty good so far but the constant mistakes that are never learned is killing me. They are like great talent evaluators and horrible trainers.

If Henne wasnt so stupid I would say Vegas had bought him off. Just terribad.

First of all guys name one top OC currently available. And if by miracle one did come here and do the same job with the offense Mike Nolan did with the defense. Then we would have a 11-5/12-4 record and at least make the second rd of the playoffs.

If we did those things we wouldnt have a HC vacancy next year anyway. If we suck it probably means again the offense sucked. LOL...........

Jason Garrett for O.C ?
.
.

"Hire a franchise QB and the head coach will get instantly smarter."

Really? Seriously, really?

Armando, are you forgetting about the O-line failure, the game day/clock management, the blind loyalty to Henning, and a myriad of other problems that fall on Sparano's shoulder? Dan Marino couldn't possibly save this team. He couldn't do it under Olivadotti's defense in which he had to keep racking up points just to make up for the swiss cheese defense. So how could any elite QB save this team handicapped by dumb play calls and an O-line who can't protect them or create opportunities for the RB? So no, a franchise QB won't make Sparano smarter, it'll show how incompetent he is. But then again, Sparano and Henning will blame the QB for their failure instead.

yaya

...makes you wonder if Vegas did ??

I believe, as so many other do, that this organization need an overhaul. Ireland has brought in high-priced FA busts. Sparano doesn't have this team playing any better than last year. Henne cannot improvise, for lack of a better term, he is a robot. We all know the mistakes this regime has made, they have been commented on extensively. I just don't see the upside of Sparano and Ireland. This whole organization doesn't have "IT". I look a the Patriots and just shake my head sadly. These guys we have are amateurs. They are over matched and they don't seem to learn from their mistakes. They don't have a vision. All they have is an outdated philosophy and an inability to improvise, adapt and overcome. Armando, I think you are totally wrong on this one.

My 2 cents. New England has 2 picks in each of the first 3 rounds of the draft. We don't have our second. Point is get used to suckville, it's gonna be a long time before we topple the Pats

Forget about Jason Garrett as OC. JJ was paying him like an HC just to keep him around wuntil there was a HC opening.

While as an OC Garrett was making more money than half the NFL coaches were! LOL..............

LA,

Armando is as clueless as this coaching staff is. Because he writes a football blog doesnt make him an expert. LOL............

I have feeling Belichick will parlay those extra picks to move up and select a top qb and Brady's understudy for the next 3-4yrs. Then unleash him upon nfl defenses around 2014. LOL........

heres a choice armando,
would you bet your journalism career on sparano being better than cohwer next year? I would bet half my paychecks that cohwer would bring more leadership, more no nonsense about wildcrap playkilling drives, no musical chairs with QBS, no constant mis-management and misuse of to's in games, no fist pumps for FG'S, AND A MUCH BETTER HOME RECORD than this coaching staff would bring if they stayed in place.
