Henning on things wrong with the Dolphins offense

Dan Henning is the Miami Dolphins offensive coordinator. Everything that offense does -- or fails to do -- is supposed to be Henning's responsibility.

Henning isn't shy about telling you his offense isn't producing at a level that is acceptable to everyone. Actually, how couldn't he deny it. But the veteran coach is clearly of the thinking that players and their execution are the only things that make an offense go or stall.

His responsibility in the entire recipe? Rarely if ever mentioned.

Take today's press conference for example. The Dolphins offense has sucked struggled the past couple of weeks and most of the season. What does Henning believe is wrong?

On what is the central issue of the running game's problems: "Blocking. That's the issue ... Second level blocking. Getting to the second level. Breaking tackles. Same as it always is."

On the passing game: "We haven't done very well here in the passing game lately ... There's a lot of moving parts in the passing game. Sometimes it's difficult to pin down what the major problem is  or what the problems are and sometimes you might just run into a team that is playing pretty good or weather conditions and that type of thing. But we can't continue to exist with as little a passing game as we had last week. We have to do better than that."

Henning mentioned a Chad Henne gaffe in miscalling one protection during Sunday's game. He said the quarterback missed Fasano on a play when the tight end was open.

And then Henning broke down the whole picture for us, relating his thoughts on why the Dolphins are 31st in the NFL in points scored:

"We have to block better. We have to throw better. We have to run better routes. We have to catch the ball. We cannot have penalties. We have to move the ball in a more consistent, efficient manner than we have in the last three week -- not unlike we did in the Raiders game."

None of this is wrong. Henning is to be applauded for his relative candor. But I struggle with the fact that not once does the coach mention that, well, his coaching could perhaps have been better on an occasion or two or 10 this season.

It's like he is disconnected from the mess. It's as if he only calls plays and if the execution is 100 percent by those darn imperfect players, the plays he calls would work perfectly.

I'm trying not to be harsh or unfair. I've been told by a couple of folks that coach Tony Sparano is "disappointed" with me because I'm holding some of his assistants, such as Henning, responsible for some of the Dolphins struggles this year.

Well, maybe if some of those assistants would hold themselves responsible, I wouldn't have to say a word.

I'd like to see how aggressive this defense can be when playing with a lead. Wouldn't that be something.

Oh well, who knows the way Henning tries to sit on 3 point leads in the 2nd quarter we may never know.

If we ever played with a two score lead we could really pin our ears back and get after them quarterbacks. Why that Cam Wake might even lead the NFL in sacks if that were the case.

Oh well, I hope the old wildcat works this Sunday.

74 degrees, blue skies & sunny again in South Florida

No visible chemtrails
Was a great day

Hope we can get it done against the Bills
Noticed that Dolphin Killer Lee Evans is out ;)

Think the Dolphins get it done Sunday and the offense picks it up and starts firing on all cylinders

Real happy w WR Kevin Curtis signing
brief local practice coverage video WR Curtis looks good

Also did u know Curtis is a quick learner
Believe his Wonderlic score was 3rd highest among ALL NFL players

Great Job Ireland on signing Curtis

Odin. You're correct. It was evident when we were 2-0 that this offense was inept. There was no reason to clam up in both those games & score a combined total of 29 points. Those games were 2 prime examples of how this season would go.

Early lead - sit on it. The philosophy needs to change. NE does NOT let up in a game...EVER & they look like the best team in the NFL with one of the worst defenses in the NFL statistically......although I'm not big on stats.

The more we sit & hope to hold on to small leads, the more games we'll wind up losing.

WHY DO I FEEL THAT SOMEONE IS TALKING TO HIMSELF ?
MOST TEAMS THEY CAN'T PRACTICE ON THEIR FROZEN FIELDS BUT MIAMI IN THE 70'S IT'S HEAVEN , STILL WE KEEP LOSING AT HOME .

I've been a bit of a Henning apologist at times, but clearly a lot of the offensive play calling has been atrocious. I can't count the number of times I have yelled at the TV for play calls this year.

Yes, I starting to think Henning needs to go.

There are some pretty knowedgeable fans here. But if you think that Sparano doesn't approve of Henning and his calls, you're delusional.

Look, I liked Sparano but finally realized he's a part of the problem. I hate it but the truth is the truth.

Good friend Joe Schmoe,

I was trying to catch with the most recent post and read you post about what needs to be fixed in order. I agree all of them things are a huge problem but STILL ignoring the fact that Henne is NOT doing his part either and that he is flat out been bad even when he has been given the time.

We all watch every Dolphins game. Has anyone seen a play run this year that you didn't see either last year or previously? Anyone? A million plays and I'm sure even us (non-football players) could spot them (from the formation).

Run plays, anyone ever seen us run from a spread formation (like a draw or something)? Anyone ever see designed cutback play? Anyone ever see us run that Polite short yardage play from a different formation?

This is the reason opposing teams call our offense vanilla. You don't need to come up with new plays, you need new formations. Put the TE to the other side, or do a sweep to Polite (when everyone is expecting him up the middle).

On plays that worked. WHY try the EXACT same play on the SAME drive? Why not hold it for another time it will surprise the defense? Or hold it for another game when the time is right. But no, Henning calls a successful play, then calls it again like it's gonna work twice in a row (that happens maybe .001% of the time).

Also, WHY does Henne need to do a 5-step drop EVERY play? Maybe that's him, maybe it's Henning, but if you're being pressured, what about those short-yardage timing passes (the cross routes, quick outs, hooks, etc.)? Henne takes the 5-step drop, and being the molasses-slow guy he is, has someone in his face as soon as he's ready to throw the ball. Forget getting him out of the pocket, get the ball out of his HANDS quicker.

Everyone sees things that can be done differently but Sparano and Henning. At least TRY something new. Show that you're helping Henne succeed. If they did that, and Henne still was playing crappy, then I'd be more confident blaming him and him alone. But with the poor play calling and coaching, plus the other personnel issues makes Henne just 1 scapegoat out of many.

LOL Odin/Joe, play with a lead. You guys watch enough to know Dan Henning doesn't ALLOW leads. If we're up 3 points, then it's on the defense to win the game, offense has done enough. 7-10 points, let alone 14, and Henning would probably take out all the starters.

Dan Henning plays to win by 1 point. A double-digit win would only happen in Miami if the Heat are playing.

I can understand the passing plays dont always get executed perfectly. The problem I have is that when it ISNT executed perfectly, Henne has no clue what to do. I wish so bad he would extend the play just a bit. There are times when he actually does sidestep trouble but then either takes off "running", or throws the ball away. Instead oflooking down field for the big play.
I know he is not Tom Brady or Drew Brees, but he could be a Philip Rivers type guy. The thing is, all those guys have something in common : they are always looking for the big play after they escape trouble. I say he could be a Philip Rivers type guy because I think they have similiar qualities. Not the most nimble of men, but have big arms. What Henne needs to learn from Rivers is 1. a fiery zeal for the game and command of the offense, and 2. escape the touble but always keep looking for the open player downfield.
If Henne can just start learning these type of things, I will start respecting him a bit more. I give him till next year then i think we officially label him a career back-up.

cocajoe, spot on. I've been asking for Sparano, Ireland & Henning GONE for moths now. MAYBE give Ireland 1 year to prove he can do better but if he is TRULY in charge, he won't fire Pom Pom Morono. the Tuna's men will all stick together.

Sparano should be fired for 2 reasons: 1. The o-line is his pet project & it's worse now than it was before they took over. It's causing the entire offense to struggle. #2 - Special teams year after year are poor.

Those 2 things alone are enough to get fired in the NFL. It's been 3 years, how long does he have to stick around for us to know he can't assembly an O-line or get ST to even be AVERAGE?

Andy NJ,

When it comes to Henne we could respectfully agree to disagree.

But don't you find "flame outs" and name calling much more enjoyable?

Speaking of which, just what the he!! do you mean Henne ain't doing his part? You no good rotten *&^%, I oughta break your &^%$(*&^!!!!

How many *&^%#^ times do I have to say it, you (*&^%$!!!!

some of Henne`s passes are way off the mark

Jerusalem (CNN) -- The Israeli Air Force shot down an unidentified flying object over the Dimona nuclear plant in the Negev Desert Thursday, the Israel Defense Forces said.

Anyone's opinion on the winner of Sunday's game?

Buffalo: 17
Fins: 15

Re-cap: Miami's three turnovers--one late int by Henne leads to Bills' win. Dolphins' defense limits Bills, but inability to score touchdowns knocks Miami out of the playoffs.

miami 17 buffalo 21

return miami has been out of the playoffs for weeks. season ended long ago

SUNDAY'S GAME IS A SOLD OUT .TO ALL THE POOR FANS .THE BLACKOUT IS LIFTED.

Question for you Henne-haters. And, as a premise let me say Henne played like crap last 2 weeks. Let me say I'm all for bringing someone in to compete with him and/or upgrading the QB (as long as it's not a 1-2yr project like a Pennington, but a younger QB who can stick around awhile).

But, what do you call it if Pennington won 11 games with the easiest schedule we've played in years, and if Henne wins 10 games this year (in his 2nd year as a starter)? How long has Pennington been in the league, and could only win 11 games (and the guy played lights out for the most part)? Henne, playing up and down, inconsistent, can STILL win 10 games.

I tell you what I call it. I call it pretty impressive (given how bad Henne's played the past few games). I call it something to build on. I call it a player you don't just throw away so easily until you make SURE he's the MAIN problem, the ONLY problem, for your offense failing (and no one can prove that with all the other issues with this offense). How good would Henne have been with a Top 5 running game?

I hear you guys on Henne. He's not a superstar at all. But he'll probably win 9-10 games this year, more than the 7 he won his first year. To me, that deserves a year 3 to see what you can do.

Miami 20

Bills 17

Wake gets another game ball with 3 sacks.

Yes Joe, I really wanted Sparano to succeed. I liked his enthusiasm. But in the end, enthusiasm is not enough.

Ireland one more year? No, I think he had more to do with personnel than people think.

its not all henning's fault... Henne has been playing like crap. ronnie bounces around for 3 seconds before he trys to hit a whole. Henne looks like he is a robot programmed to go through the motions.
and we are an overall SLOW team, brown, marshall, even bess are all slow

Henne-haters? I suggested a better term yesterday. Anti-Hennites.

ANY ONE WHO PUTS THE BALME ON HENNING HE HAS NO CLUE OF THE GAME OF FOOTBALL.

Who is this "Sporano" I keep reading about? Any relation to Tony SpArano?

Also, "rediculous" is not a word, folks. But some of the spelling here IS ridiculous.

Jeff Foxworthy oh my, he is hysterical!

I just love his zany antics.

You know you're a redneck when.....if.....ah....well.....I forget, but funnier than the dickens I tell ya, yeah yesiree!

You might be a empress of a tropical fruit if.........

Alright then, if he's disappointed your holding Henning accountable then lets look past that and to the GM who is responsible for getting better players that execute 100% and make the plays work. Just can't get past the fact we have a former OL & OL coach and we still only have one starting caliber (maybe 2 if Vernon Carey is having a good day) offensive lineman. It's always about the draft. Always.

PEOPLE ARE TREATING THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE AS THEIR EX WIVES .NO RESPECT AT ALL .PLEASE TAKE YOUR TIME TO WRITE IN CORRECT ENGLISH .

He is a redneck, ALoco.

People who think Budweiser is good beer find him hilarious.

I'm with the Empress on this one. Listening to him is torture.

Maybe Henne would do better with a Brady-mane hairstyle?

7th-Grader,

SpOrano as in SPORE. The SpOre attaches itself to a host(Parcells)as a means of survival.

The SpOre doesn't become a SpArano until it actually wins a playoff game.

PEOPLE WHO DRINK BUDWEISER SHOULD GO TO JAIL AND NEVER RELEASED.

Odinseye,

LMAO! How is life pal? Clueless I see.

Henne is REGRESSING. It is OBVIOUS to the point Miami wins in spite of him vs jet and lose because of him to the Browns. He has to be held accountable for his play. The Browns game was clunker the jets game going 5-18 for 55 yards is INEXCUSABLE. I don't know what to tell you bro.

If you aren't going to listen to me at least listen to the rest of the NFL. The rest of the league loads up the box and says Henne can't beat us. Does he win sometimes? Yes. But the formula for success is Henne WON't and CAN'T consistantly win games. So take your chances and blitz him because he won't throw the one on one because he can't. Dan Henning sucks, that much is clear but he couldn't open the offensive formations and playbook even if he wanted to because Henne still stares down receivers and can only read one side of the field. If they opened the playbook for Henne he would have thrown 25 ints at this point because he is not capable of reading a defense.

Henne has his moments but the fact he turns the ball over for 10 STRAIGHT games. He has turnovers in 20 of 25 career starts. He is a BACK UP!

Good call Armando!

It's not like we are stupid. Does Sparano think we are blind? Not all fans are illiterate in football! A lot of us have been complaining about the play calling even before you brought a public light to it. It really doesn't take a rocket scientist to see it. We are 31st in points for crying out loud. When are they taking there heads out of their rears. If you have deficiencies in your team, call plays to their strengths! What a concept!

The coaches should be DISSAPIONTED with the teams progression*lmao* rather than at a media reporter WHO needs to ask the ?'s that refuses to be addressed week to week, If sparano and others cant take the heat, THEN get the F@c# outta HERE!!!

MARSHALL droped the ball about 8 times and cost us 2 games '

bess is a little on the slow side .

fassano is number one on fumbling and dropped balls.

r.brow.......may god bless his moves .

I cannot believe this. Sparano is disappointed in a journalist? Are you kidding me? If he has time to worry about what Salguero is writing, he is clearly not spending enough time on the game plan. Regarding Henning, the guy doesn't have to take responsibility, because he is a lame duck coordinator. His legacy is at stake, so he has to blame the players.

Dead Henning has never taken responsibility in his life, such things include, his own children, failed marraiges, house cleaning, personal hygeine and grooming so why would he begin at football, if the dead man walking could, he would blame GOD for being born into this world!!!

You know what ANDY NJ?

Just picture me sticking out my tongue with both thumbs in my ears wiggling my fingers and saying:

Henne's still our starter-Nan Na Nan Na NAN NAH!

Who is this Biology Teacher and how did his name get on my post?

Mmmmmmm, Verdy Interesting.................

Good post Armando...

Henning is right. The offense is finding a way to mess everything up. Problem being the offense is designed for checkers when everyone else is playing chess.

Henne is having some trouble. But it is in the head. There are too many people in it. They have to lay off. Pennington should not be even talking to him during a game. QB coach only. Showing him defensive alignments. Not telling him crap.

CAN I ASK A QUESTION...WHEN THE LAST TIME B.MARSHALL WENT TO THE PLAYOFFS W/ ANY TEAM LAST FEW YEARS SINCE HE CAME TO THE LEAGUE ??

A- NEVER.

Friendly teacher or whoever,

He is the starter of team that much is true. But there is a TON of bad QB play in the league and Henne is one of them. So him being a starter is by default. Remember he did get benched and only is playing because of Pennington's injury. IF Pennington was healthy Henne is on the bench without question.

ANDY, CAN YOU PLAY A QB ?

Sparano should be upset with his own dumb contributions to draft picks, the idiots he puts on the field (like Jason Allen for 3 years) and allowing the dumb and pointless wildcat stuff. Not to mention the Pat White fiasco. He's a college level coach.

IN EVERY BASEMENT
I SEE LOVE WITH

I DREAM FOR EVERY

Alosi will be fired.

The inactive players that were directed to illegally stand in coaches box/the wall, all snitched on Alosi.

Bart Scott's dumb a s s tells the press, "Alosi is just like a teammate, you've got to stand behind your teammates. Just like Braylon and Santonio, you've got to stand behind your teammates".

Hey Dumb a s s, if the in actives were standing BEHIND Alosi there wouldn't have been any problems. Oh and by the way Bart, you know those other two you're standing behind, one beats up women and does drugs, the other shoots people......well not people, he shoots himself!

Ah, Ha Ha Ha what a bunch of inbred as-holes!!!!

L-O-S-E-R-S!!!!

THERE'S A TAPE JUST SURFACED FROM THE YEAR 2004 WHEN BILLICHICK TRYED TO TRIPP FORMER IND WR MARVIN HARRISON ,IT'S A VERY FUNNY TAPE ...

I am going to decipher that ALoco

You meant "Can you play QB?" not "Can you play A QB?"

No I can't not it this level. I was 2 year lettermen as both OLB and TE and started at TE both Junior and Senior year and at OLB my Senior year. I was the 3rd string emergency QB. So to answer your question, no.

henning has been coaching 30 plus years. yeah maybe the play calling is head scratching at times, but the bottom line is execution. and what they have right now is not getting it done. it all comes down to the players making plays, especially the qb, and i don't see that happening. again this is hennes shot to prove to the whole world that he is legit and a starting qb in the nfl. will he flop again? how many more poor games will it take for them to realize the answer is NO, not a starter or franchise qb.

Unbelievable...Sparano should be disappointed in Henning not Mando! There is a HUGE problem with all of our coaches, OL, Head, OC, ect...anyone who agrees or believes henning is correct is either blind, stoopid, or just doesn't know what a good NFL team should look and play like. I can't wait for him to leave after this year!

Execution? Sure that can be better BUT..when your OC is calling plays that keeps players out of getting into their groove and lulls everyone on the team (and fans) asleep then execution is only a smaller issue...the main issue is henning

Armando....I havenb't read the whole Blog yet...but your first assumption is dead wrong!

Dan Henning is the Miami Dolphins offensive coordinator. Everything that offense does -- or fails to do -- is supposed to be Henning's responsibility.

Its the HEAD COACHES responsibility....everything stars and ends with the Head Coach....offense, Defense, Special Teams, practice, training, game plan, etc, etc

When a team wins nobody says "MAN...THEY GOT A GREAT OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR"...

We say..."man TEAM X HAS ONE HECK OF A COACH.....

Case in point...who is the Patriots OC...you don't know??? Me neither...but the got one heck of a coach

If theres a 1 percent chance then there is a 100 percent chance!

andy you know what you are talking about bro. right there with you.

Well said mando, this senile dolt refuses to take any blame or responsibility. Barney Frank Jr.

Andy NJ,

Is your real name Al Bundy by chance?

You claim to be so much smarter than the rest of us and yet you resort to straw man arguments? Touche'-NOT!

IF Pennington woulda, he shoulda, he coulda, etc, etc, ad nausea.

Fact is, he DIDN"T and he COULDN"T! All Pennington was able to do is prove Sporano and Henning were wrong again in thinking he would be an upgrade over Henne. C'mon man, who here didn't already know this? Well I mean besides you?

I can play the straw man game too, try this on for size: If Pennington wouldn't have re injured himself we would be on the biggest losing streak of the season.

Isn't the straw man game fun?

THANKS ANDY, I JUST FELT SOME HOW YOU PLAYED FOOTBALL BUT STILL YOU COULD HAVE PLAYED QB IF THEY CALL ON YOU .

IF THERES A 1 PERCENT CHANCE THEN THERE IS A 100 PERCENT CHANCE .

(( AL RIGHT RESERVED FOR KRIS ))

Dolphin77,

I am with you all the way on execution. The Saints and Eagles run like 30 different formations but the rest of the league? Defenses know what is coming on most downs. They know the formation and the tendencies. They know what is coming it is up to the team to execute.

Defenses say it all the time we knew it was coming. We were coached to know it was coming. We watched the film to know the play was coming but we couldn't stop it because they executed it.

I love Atlanta's play calling. If a play works they run it over and over again until you stop it. When the Falcons played the Ravens on the final drive they ran the same play 3 plays in a row and just flip flopped the formation. It wasn't rocket science to figure out for the Ravens they couldn't stop it because Ryan was putting the ball where only Roddy White could make the play. You know the next time they ran the same 2 plays was against Bucs and Roddy White scored on the same play again. Teams run the same plays all the time but they HAVE QB's good enough to make the plays.
