Henning on things wrong with the Dolphins offense

Dan Henning is the Miami Dolphins offensive coordinator. Everything that offense does -- or fails to do -- is supposed to be Henning's responsibility.

Henning isn't shy about telling you his offense isn't producing at a level that is acceptable to everyone. Actually, how couldn't he deny it. But the veteran coach is clearly of the thinking that players and their execution are the only things that make an offense go or stall.

His responsibility in the entire recipe? Rarely if ever mentioned.

Take today's press conference for example. The Dolphins offense has sucked struggled the past couple of weeks and most of the season. What does Henning believe is wrong?

On what is the central issue of the running game's problems: "Blocking. That's the issue ... Second level blocking. Getting to the second level. Breaking tackles. Same as it always is."

On the passing game: "We haven't done very well here in the passing game lately ... There's a lot of moving parts in the passing game. Sometimes it's difficult to pin down what the major problem is  or what the problems are and sometimes you might just run into a team that is playing pretty good or weather conditions and that type of thing. But we can't continue to exist with as little a passing game as we had last week. We have to do better than that."

Henning mentioned a Chad Henne gaffe in miscalling one protection during Sunday's game. He said the quarterback missed Fasano on a play when the tight end was open.

And then Henning broke down the whole picture for us, relating his thoughts on why the Dolphins are 31st in the NFL in points scored:

"We have to block better. We have to throw better. We have to run better routes. We have to catch the ball. We cannot have penalties. We have to move the ball in a more consistent, efficient manner than we have in the last three week -- not unlike we did in the Raiders game."

None of this is wrong. Henning is to be applauded for his relative candor. But I struggle with the fact that not once does the coach mention that, well, his coaching could perhaps have been better on an occasion or two or 10 this season.

It's like he is disconnected from the mess. It's as if he only calls plays and if the execution is 100 percent by those darn imperfect players, the plays he calls would work perfectly.

I'm trying not to be harsh or unfair. I've been told by a couple of folks that coach Tony Sparano is "disappointed" with me because I'm holding some of his assistants, such as Henning, responsible for some of the Dolphins struggles this year.

Well, maybe if some of those assistants would hold themselves responsible, I wouldn't have to say a word.

Henning Blows. PERIOD. Wildcat, Wildcat, 3rd and Long, put Henne under center, 2 receiver set and expect a first down. 2. 1:47 to go in game, run? 3. Something works, Fasano over the middle vs. Clevland, go away from it. Your 100% correct Armando. This old, dried up piece of OC takes no responsibility for this ancient game plan. Henning needs to GO AWAY, great article

Aa

Armando....I haven't read the whole Blog yet...but your first assumption is dead wrong!

You: Dan Henning is the Miami Dolphins offensive coordinator. Everything that offense does -- or fails to do -- is supposed to be Henning's responsibility.

Me: Its the HEAD COACHES responsibility....everything stars and ends with the Head Coach....offense, Defense, Special Teams, practice, training, game plan, etc, etc

When a team wins nobody says "MAN...THEY GOT A GREAT OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR"...

We say..."man TEAM X HAS ONE HECK OF A COACH.....

Case in point...who is the Patriots OC...you don't know??? Me neither...but they got one heck of a coach

If theres a 1 percent chance then there is a 100 percent chance!

Odinseye,

What else do I need to tell you and show you about Henne. 20 of 25 games he has at least 1 turnover. He has a turnover in 10 straight this season.

I don't claim to be smarter then all of you. There are many good post on here from people who show facts and don't just say the receivers are slow and the offensive line sucks. Point out facts about why Henne is legit. Not just he is Miami's starter and that's that. There are Qb's with far less talent then Henne that make throws and make their TEAM better, Sam Bradford a rookie, Josh Freeman a 2nd year player, Philip Rivers who has the best TE but throws to Malcolm Floyd who is big and slow, Patrick Crayton and Legadu Nanee. C'mon man. Show me some facts and not your because you say so crap and then I will respect you opinion.

M.VICK CAN HAVE A DOG IN 2012 AFTER HIS PROBATION EXPIRES FOR HIS KID GIRL .

ALoco,

My point was I played the game and although I wasn't a QB I still KNOW Henne sucks and MORE then you stupid!

ANDY NJ, NICE POST @ 6;37

Andy NJ,

You defeat your own argument AGAIN! Unbelievable!

When Atlanta runs a play and it works, they run it over and over again until you stop it.

When Dan Henning calls a play and it doesn't work(IE the wildcat Duh), he runs it over and over again REPEATEDLY putting his young QB in 3rd in long(ie: bad situations-duh again).

Dude, I've just been playing with you but your ignorance is reaching epic proportions. What part of your OWN STATEMENTS don't you get?

I mean, for real? You can't see the difference you've pointed out?

And your right there with him D77?

ROTFLMAO!!!!

ALoco you just tried to dogg me and makle me look stupid bro and now good post?

ANDY, I MEANT EVERY THING I SAID WHY THINK THAT ,I DISAGREE W/ YOU ON HENNE BUT YOU WROTE NICE POST ABOUT YOUR THINKING AND ASK ODIN TO PROVE TO YOU OTHER WISE .PEACE

Now I have read the rest of the article and I have to say....looking in the mirror must really suck.

Henning says the same things that I read on this blog day after day, confirms what alot of you guys have said....We don't block very well, we don't catch very well, recievers need to get open, we need to be able to run the ball better....We wanna be coaches should be pounding our chest.....Henning has confirmed that 90 percent of the blog KNOWS what they are talking.....congrats.....

But instead once again most can't see the forest thru the treees and if we need a fall guy (ala Alosi))...looks like Henning is the man for the job.

If there is a 1 percent chance, then there is a 100 percent chance!!!

GO FINS!!!

What else do I need to tell you and show you about Henne. 20 of 25 games he has at least 1 turnover. He has a turnover in 10 straight this season.

You need to quit trying this one. Hall of famers have started out with worse stats. It just doesn't apply unless your extremely short sighted to the point of dereliction.

Andy NJ, shaggy posted the facts right here a couple weeks ago. 5 HOF QBs and one future HOF whose TDs/INTs were the same or worse then Henne. Joe Namath 12 tds 45 ints I believe thru 25 games. Your right, none of us are smart enough and the "facts" are 25 games are not sufficient for anyone, not even NFL experts to evaluate if Henne is going to be a good QB or not. That's the only fact I need to know.

Odinseye,

My point being all of you make excuses that Dan Henning is so predicatable but yet other teams are predictable as well? My example: Atlanta. Not only did they run the same play over and over that the D knew was coming but Matt Ryan made the throw and play that was called even though the D knew it was coming.

You been playing with me? Dude you haven't pointed out or given me a single reason why Henne is legit other then all the "so called" obvious such as the offensive sucks, Henning sucks. The reason you point all that out is because you can't give me one fact or observation that Henne is any good. I am going off facts. The facts are his play is bad. There has to be a time when a player is held accountable on his own.

You make no valid points in any argument.

Henne sucks the big one. End of story.

henning is like our current govt. a lot of talk about the problem but in reality there really isnt shiit getting done to correct it.

same ole....same ole....

same here as in washington....cut the BS and go line by line...up or down....remove the garbage and move on with the acceptable (I say acceptable bc our line blows for now especially with all the injuries).

its called accountability and no one seems to be held accountable in our country anymore.

BobbyD12,

I respect your opinions. You brought facts to me. But all I need to know is Henne is losing games and we won in spite of him last week. He is not getting the job done for Miami.

My patience has run out with him. But you guys will all get your wish and see him finish the season and probably get another year unless Sparano is canned.

The reason we run the WildCat is because this staff doesn't trust the QB to handle the ball that many times....

We went away from the WildCat...and our QB turned the ball over..alot!

You saw the WildCat start to rear its ugly head in the raiders game when Henne threw a pick and no reciever was in sight...

The WC was in full effect after the 1st pick against Cleveland...and I don't see it going away any time soon

Aloco,

Did you get the movie...I saw your post earlier

Kris,

Right on bro! You bring more FACTS to the table.

You see how this works odinseye? When you have an opinion and it's your right to have one you might want to consider backing it up with a few facts so you sound like you know what you are talking about.

Home...you got any links to sightys other than youtube talking bout the illumanti...been looking at it.....not trying to be sarcastic

All I can say is I believe with an OC who has a different plan and some better weapons, Henne will be a legitimate QB. We are beating a dead horse with this argument though. We all are set on our opinions here. We all want a winning team so let's let this one play itself out

YEAS I DID KRIS ,I DIDN'T SEEN IT YET ,I AM WAITING FOR GIRL FRIEND TO COME BACK FROM HER DAD'S HOUSE .

ANDY, WHY DON'T YOU SPEAK OF THE 2 GAMES THAT THE ST CUSED US TO LOSE AND THE OTHER 2 GAME THAT MARSH DID COST US ??

WHY WE PUT ALL THE PRESSURE ON ONE GUY'S SHOULDERS AND LEAVING THE OTHER PLAYER BREATH ?

GUZS, IAM OUTA PAINT THINER,WHAT ELSE IS AROUND THE HOSE TO CONTINUE MY BUZZ?

Andy and Aloco,

It wasn't a good post @ 6:37.

Andy thinks Henne is the main issue and he's stuck on stupid.

The main issue is Dan Henning.

Lets be realistic. Pennington fell in our laps and couldn't get a win in Hennings offense, period!

David Lee's wildcat, surprised everyone and bailed out Hennings pathetic offense. Ricky and Ronnie of course played major roles, but these are the FACTS ANDY.

Since that time, Hennings offense HAS NOT CHANGED-PERIOD! As long as the wild fluke was working things were manageable. As soon as teams started figuring the wild fluke out, all of our offensive statistical categories have been in decline. Still Hennings offense hasn't changed one iota-PERIOD.

He's went to the wild fluke well way more than one times too many. Other than that, Henning sets in the booth week in and week out blaming everyone under the sun except himself.

That's the MAIN ISSUE.

Not exactly a quarterback friendly environment since his arrival. Now, if you want to evaluate a young, POSSIBLY good quarterback in this kind of disgusting excuse of a system, that's your own ignorant thinking.

Just remember A 10 year vet as good as Pennington couldn't do squat with this system save for David Lee's gimmickry called the wild fluke! Pennington couldn't get not one win until the wildcat snuck up on the patsies.

How are those facts ANDY?

Let me guess, you still want to defend Henning by telling how many ints Henne has thrown in his first 26 games, RIGHT?

kris, which really bothers me. If your not showing confidence in your QB, then your QB isn't going to be confident. How many times this year has Henne had to come in on 3rd and long cause of Wildcat failure? Ur telling ur young QB we don't have confidence in u but u need to convert 3 rd and longs? To me, I would rather have Henne build confidence by continuing to throw after he makes a mistake, then try to rein him in. That's how u learn, not by standing on sideline watching the Wildcat. BTW, Hene is 6-1 on the road, not bad for a young QB. Home, another story

Aloco.....if I speak about the games that the Special Team cased us to lose (2 games you said), and the 2 games that Marshal caused us to lose (according to you...not me)

Then by that count Henning atrocious play calling might have only cost us 1 game.....which means he really shoudn't be blamed...right?

My real point Aloco is that regardless of how Armando wants to salnt it...Sporano is over all in charge and he should be held accountable, and any blame or congradulations should be on his head...not an OCs

It's amazing to me that this guy would take NO responsibility for the offences ineptitude this season. e's either delussional or arrogant beyone believe. Either way, I can't wait until he's gone from this organization. There is NOBODY holding his accountable. He's a buddy of Parcells and protected. Even Sparano mentions when the team struggles that HE needs to a better job coaching.

BOBBY,

COUld be when henne on the road there's no much pressure on him but when he's at home all the pressure is on,

Bottom line, next year Henne well be just as bad!!!The problem is we'll be another year with inability ,but at least we'll know.

So according to Henning if the players execute the plays he calls, all created from his offensive genius, with 100% efficiency then those plays would work 100% of the time and Miami would be a unstoppable force on Offense that no Defense could stop. Am I understanding that load of crap right? Ego and Old-Old-Old (Like leather head Old) school football philosophy have cracked Hennings skull. What a complete crock of $hit.

Armando,
Seems like Sparano might need to take a step out of the kitchen if he can't bare the heat. The truth is the truth deal with it.

let's just say, i am willing to bet that the guys on cbs, espn, nfl network, fox or wherever will say henne is not a franchise qb. so some of us will say he is, some of us will say he is not, but i would agree with those who analyze players for a living or have played in the nfl.

Bobby D12,

I hope Henne turns out to be all we want him to be...cause that means we will be winners as a an orginization.....I really like Henne's arm, we haven't seen zip like that since Marino. But in my opinion I don't think he can process information that fast and that is the true mark of a QB on the rise...

On a more positive note.....the Baltimore fans are equally as down on Flacco as we are on Henne....and the ravens are 9-4 and Flacco has been to the AFC Championship game...so I guess fans are never satisfied....I know i'm not right now

agree 100 percent w/you kris . henning is A OC NOT PLAYING ON THE FIELD .IF A PLAYER DROPS A BALL OR USE HIS ANTICS WHEN HE KNOWS HIS TEAM NEEDS FOR A WIN ,HE CAN'T BE BALMED FOR ALL THAT .

IF THERES A I PERCENT CHANCE THEN THERES A 100 PERCENT CHANCE .

Andy,

I gave you the facts on hall of famers starting out with comparable int numbers.

You chose to ignore it in your blind ignorance.

Here's another fact for you. Your reading comprehenson skills are on about a 6th grade level. I've told you repeatedly that I'm not arguing that Henne is good enough. I'm arguing that until Henning goes, it's not going to matter much who we bring in at quarterback. Am I typing to fast for you sweet tart?

You agreed with Bobby that 25 games isn't enough to properly evaluate yet when I point to the same things you say it's wrong. You are more squirrely than a be atch. It is or it isn't but munch. Make up your mind and quit paying lip service.

You try to skip issues everytime you're proven wrong. I'm not surprised.

Craig M...thats because Sporano HAS to do a better job of coaching...thats why he is The Head Coach.....All the blame...All the love...no two ways about it

Armando before you got into the part about Henning taking zero blame I was also saying the same to myself.

Sure there's enough blame to go around to every facet of our offense. However Henning makes everyone scapegoat but himself. Iw ould have had lots more respect for him had he manned up and taken at least some resposible for it himself.

Geez, the blinding arrogance of this guy is truly unending.

ODIN,

ANDY NJ NO WHERE TO BE SEEN AFTER YOU GAVE him the FACTS,Lol

For those who would like to take a break from the Henne debate, here's a wonderful story about C. Wake on S.S. The dude fought hard to prove to all the naysayers who doubted him. I love this man.

http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/miami-dolphins/fl-dolphins-cameron-wake-1217-20101216,0,6858065.story

But, even the so called experts don't agree. Gruden likes Henne, Sam Madison had praise for Henne after the Jets game, other guys have a different opinion. No one knows for sure, that's why I am in the camp of give him his 40 plus starts where most QBs really show if they are real or not

can any one beliEVE THAT CAMERON WAKE USE TO BE A SLEEZY MORTAGAGE BROKER AND BECOMES THE NO 1 SACK LEADER IN THE NFL.

BOTH JOBS REQUIRES SMART AND CONNING THE PEOPLE .

Out of all 1st rd qb's drafted last 3 seasons only one is playing clearly playing superior to the 2nd rd drafted Henne and any of the rest for that matter. That guy's name. Matt Ryan.

As a 2nd rd drafted qb, Henne is pretty much standing his own ground in head to head comparison to qb's drafted higher. Giving further evidence more often than not it takes time for these young qb's to fully develop.

We can blast Henne as often as we like but fact remains we are void of any better options. Our offseason positioning would also suggest our options there will be just as void.

So love it or leave it, it seems Henne's still here for at least one more full season.

ODoin,YOU ARE A GUY THATS LIKE TO GET A BUZ ON,WHAT KIND OF CHEMICAL IN MY HOUS CAN I INHALE?

Henning himself stated breaking tackles has been an offensive issue too. Guess we all are already aware of this.

If Mark Ingram is available when its our turn too pick it's a no-brainer for to select him.

Andy NJ,

I just can't buy into its all Hennings fault.....cause its not....Reasonable people will come to the consensus that there is enough blame to go around...For about the first 6 weeks of the season Henning ran some kind of trick play in every game.....He gave the players every chance to prove themselves...

If he ran the ball, there were 200 post on here how we run to much and we need to pass more

If he passed 30 times....i read about how were suppose to be a running team (even thugh we haven't had a 100 yard rusher yet).

My biggest problem with Henning is is refusal to make Ronnie or Ricky the primary back or ride the HOT back...but again I don't blame him...I balme the HC...not the OC

Try Bleach and Ammonia.

Odinseye,

I never defended Dan Henning. I said he has sucked this year and should be and will be fired.

Pennington was always a game manager. He was before he got here and when he got here that offense was basically the best offense for Pennington to succeed. Without the wild cat Miami was 8-8 or worse. The Wild Cat was the difference but this was a 1-15 team the year before. Pennington wasn't brought in here to light it up he was to help Miami win games by managing the game and NOT hurting Miami by turning the ball over. The offense was bland by design when Pennington was the QB. The Wild Cat along with Pennington's era free play got Miami to 11-5 and playoffs.

Henne remains in a system where Henning calls max protection because although it isn't pretty it puts Miami in the best position to win still with a QB of Henne's capabilities to win the game. If it was wide open with 3 receiver sets and Ronnie and Ricky flanking out of the backfield it wouldn't matter because Henne can't read the WHOLE field anyway. He would take a sack going through his progressions or turn the ball over which he does with max protection anyway. I wouldn't care if Henne threw 15 tds all year as long as he didn't turn the ball over. So Henning leaves max protection to help block because it gives Henne half the field to work with. If this offense was opened up Henne would throw over 20 interceptions but have what more passing yards and a few more TDs because of it? Miami wouldn't be in the best position to win is my point.

Henning sucks but knows what it takes to win more then all of us combined and some. He is just making bad/horrible decisions on what plays to run and at what time.

All I know is that I'm itchy and scratchy right now. Hell yes...

Go back to the Chicago game. Any questions about Henning and his madness should have benn answered after that debacle. He will make excuses untill the cows come home. But he put this team and Thigpen in an impossible situation. Now we can eliminate Henne from the conversation and focus on Lord Helmet. 7 runs in a game where we had a 3rd stringer, that really was our only option at quarterback. The Bears had to be shaking their heads or shocked at the play calling that night. Someone needed to stop him. It was like your drunk uncle who ruins the wedding by showing his junk during the ring ceremony. This game told me a whole lot about what Henning is all about.

DB,

What about Flacco....he's the real deal

MARK IGRAM
CAM NEWTON
LUCK..................ALL WILL BE GONE BY THE 10'S PICK ,WE BETTER MOVE UP BY ANY MEANS .

I highly dislike Dan Henning, his playcalls leave me confused at many times. That being said, a lot of things can be mentioned as to why we are where we are.

The tinkering with the bottom of the roster to a point of making a move to make a move blew up in our faces early in the season, rearing its ugly head with our ST failures.

Not that Smiley, Grove, and D Thomas are doing much of anything elsewhere, the experiment on our interior offensive line has also completely blown up in our face. You cannot convince me that Ronnie and Ricky have fallen off nearly as badly as they seem to have. The blocking is terrible. Also, Vernon Carey has not shown anything close to being the player he was. Amazing that our offensive line is in as much shambles as it is.

The #4 WR spot did not need Greg Camarillo to be on the Vikings. I like Benny Sapp, but his impact is nowhere near what Camarillo's would have been this year. Watching our receiving corps the past couple of weeks, whether without Marshall or Hartline, has shown that we messed up moving on past Cam.

Add Brandon Marshall. Subtract Ted Ginn. Draft a G in the 3rd Round. This was basically the master plan for our approach on offense this offseason. Spend 7 of 8 draft picks on side of the ball, your other side better be elite. Management misjudged where our offense was as a whole. The lack of speed and playmaking ability, combined with an inaccurate QB, and terrible blocking, and the offense was destined for doom. Hopefully the offensive side of the ball gets the same attention the defensive side got in this coming offseason.

And to show I am not only looking at the negatives, considering the youth movement we have undertaken, 7-6 is hard to complain about. Consider the players who we have shown the door since the end of last season. Ted Ginn. Greg Camarillo. Justin Smiley. Jake Grove. Donald Thomas. Joey Porter, Jason Taylor. Will Allen (he's gone, no sense in arguing that) Jason Allen. Also a few others who really had no impact. That is a LOT to replace, and it can be argued that for long-term success, this approach is the right one. Factor in the Odrick injury as well, that was a big blow.

I believe we are a lot closer to being at the top than we are to the bottom, and I think we are close. One thing about Jeff Ireland has been that he is not shy, he will be aggressive, no matter what. A playmaker at TE and RB could push this same offense from middle of the pack to top 10, and the young players we have on this team will continue to grow. My frustration with this team lies with the playcalling, and I am not as bothered by some of the mistakes of the regime as others. I know what I watched for years before they arrived, and do not miss that stuff at all.

The thing that nobody talks about is the unwillingness to go for it on 4th and 1 situations. One of the reasons the Patriots have been so successful for so many years is bellechick going for it on most 4 and 1 situations in the opponent's territory. Just think how many drives have been extended, how many more points have been scored and how many games where won by playing to win and not to lose. If your offense can't convert a 4th and 1 you don't deserve to win in this league. I just someone would relay this to Henning.

this is a real good thought post by bootang25. every point is valid and makes you think about the big picture of the team .

Im out fellas.

Odinseye good chat, buddy.

You're still wrong and you know it. You just are saving face at this point. If they were keep score right now I just you out in back to back games (debates) going back to earlier this week.

and more to your point DB....only Ryan, Flacco, and Henne have played from that 08 QB class.....well matt flynn got some action when the green bay starter went down.....

but to put it i perspective......

Ryan, Flacco, Henne...thats the order they came out...and thats the order thier playing in

vince,

most posters here are donkeys ,all they talk about henne OR henning and never bring up that point of 4 AND 1

Andy,

I guess I was misunderstanding you as much as you were me.

I thought you were defending Henning and you thought I was defending Henne.

I know I'm ultra harsh on Hennings and I'm set on the fact he has to go.

I'm not set on Henne being the guy. I would just like to see him get a chance under some better circumstances. Besides we're pressed for options at the moment.

In light of your last post, I'll apologize for any and all the pointed "quips". I do enjoy the debate though :)

Since we don't have a 2nd rd pick and it's highly unlikely we have the firepower to acquire one. I would even suggest drafting a top rated olineman with the first pick. Then select a speedy change of pace rb with the 3rd rd pick.

We only resign Brown to contract that's commensurate to the production's he's given us in the past. We all know that shouldnt be to lofty. These would be nice 3rd rd pickups that fits that bill:

Noel Devine, RB, West Virginia
Height: 5-8. Weight: 175.
Projected 40 Time: 4.31.
Projected Round (2011): 3-4.

DeMarco Murray, RB, Oklahoma
Height: 6-1. Weight: 214.
Projected 40 Time: 4.44.
Projected Round (2011): 3-5.

Derrick Locke, RB, Kentucky
Height: 5-9. Weight: 190.
Projected 40 Time: 4.37.
Projected Round (2011): 4-6.

You can get away with being predictable when your O-line is good. That is how Atlanta does it.
The Dolphin O-line is not good and really has been a liability all season.

Having a mediocre line makes QBing very difficult. Then add how Henning does nothing to help Henne and you have a young QB who is struggling.
It is not surprising.

Also, they run the wildcat because the team is desperately trying to find a running game. IMO they run the wildcat for this reason and not because they do not trust Henne.
The wildcat allows an additional blocker and the team is still able to have some success with it.
But again the timing is frequently bad by Henning.
I have read a number of you point out some important things about the play calling.
Under center on 3rd and 20? That is mind blowing yet routine for Henning.
You can run out of a shot gun formation. The Pats do it all the time.
You can have a spread formation which never happens.
Where are the screen plays? Where are the slant patterns? Where is the vertical passing game?

Henning is awful and like some one pointed out for all our complaining about him there is no guarantee that he will be gone next year.
Sparano is circling the wagons and Henning is his guy. Sparano has signed off on this approach all season and for the last 3 seasons.
It's pathetic, which is why I want Sparano gone too. Sparano is not competent. IMO.
