When I tweeted Friday that Channing Crowder is doubtful for Sunday's game against the Cleveland Browns, one of my followers answered my tweet in stinging fashion. If Crowder cannot play Sunday as expected, after not practicing all week on an injured knee, my follower noted the inside linebacker will not have any fewer tackles than he had last week against Oakland.
Zero.
Ziiiiing!
But it is true. Crowder, even when healthy this year, has not exactly posted impressive statistics. After missing the first four games with some sort of abdominal/groin injury, Crowder has only 22 tackles in 7 games.
That averages out to slightly over three tackles per game. That's good for a cornerback or a nose tackle. But it is not very good for an inside linebacker. Karlos Dansby, by comparison, averages more than seven tackles per game.
Crowder has had five tackles or more in a game only once this year, when he collected six against Chicago. Dansby has had five tackles or more in a game nine times.
That's not the most frustrating thing. It would be acceptable if Crowder wasn't a tackle machine but came up with timely plays -- momentum-changing plays here and there. He hasn't been doing that, either.
He doesn't have a sack. He doesn't have an interception. He doesn't have a forced fumble. He doesn't have a recovered fumble.
That doesn't mean Channing Crowder isn't a solid player. It does mean he's just not having an eye-opening season. And he's not a big contributor.
Tim Dobbins would be the expected starter for Crowder if he sits out as expected.

How do you play the first part of your career with one of the most studious, hard working LB's the game has ever seen and not even pick up a little bit of that ability?? I bet you couldn't even get a 5th round pick for him.

Odin:
Forgive me, its been a slow day here at work. Alas, I am going home(my house, not Mr. Home)to enjoy this cool, sunny day here in South Florida.

I think LeRon McClain's saliva should be tested for energy draining or paralyzing enzymes. Crowder hasn't been the same since McClain spit on him.

I've seen the Run D stat with & without Channing in the lineup bandied about and there if a difference but I'm wondering if anyone has the "short over the middle pass completion stat" that the linebackers cover, I'd like to know if we're better or worse with Channing in the game. Food for thought, Armando do you have that stat available?

Tapeworm,
I do not sit in judgement AT THIS TIME. If you have done something you feel you need to apologize for, tell it too your mirror.
DO WHAT THOU WILT!
However, provided you do a good job on that small intestine, I will grant you a pass back to level 7. A chair at the Warriors Table will be reserved for YOU!

Chowder never had a EYE-OPENING season he never had a momentum changin play anywhere AREN YOU F$##%%^ with me
Posted by: PETTYFOGGER | December 04, 2010 at 05:25 PM
Mando,
Crowder is a victim of the defensive scheme. In a 3-4 defense the mike lb does not blitz nor is responsible for sacking the qb. He is there to stop the run, period. He was injured earlier this year so, physically he is just getting out of training camp. All of you who hate Crowder need to take football 101.
Posted by: phinzone | December 04, 2010 at 05:27 PM
phinzone, why the anger and accusations! make your point eloquently and wait for dignified responses! you are better than that!

odin, just heard on a local rock station that george thorogood and joe cocker are going to tour together!
Posted by: redsky | December 04, 2010 at 05:37 PM
Who is this "Channing Crowder" you keep referencing?
Posted by: Opposing offensive players (collectively) | December 04, 2010 at 05:47 PM
Crowder is a victim now?
Thanks phinzone, I enjoyed the laugh!
You can make all the excuses in the world. Zach Thomas didn't make excuses, he made tackles. It didn't matter if he was in a 3-4, 4-3 or in the middle of operation Desert Storm. He made plays.
You can love up on Crowder all you want. But you have to include loving the facts that he's never been more than barely average. Plus he's NEVER been able to avoid the injuries.
The only time he's ever surpassed my own personal expectations was this year. I didn't expect that he would get injured twice!
Posted by: odinseye | December 04, 2010 at 05:49 PM
in CROWDER CONTRACT OF 20 MILLION THERE'S NO THING IT SAYS THAT HE GOT TO PLAY WHAT HE LIKE'S .THE MAIN PROBLEM NOW IS HE'SINJURED AND WE NEED ANOTHE QB QBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB FOR NEXT YEAR .
Posted by: ALoco | December 04, 2010 at 05:58 PM
Redsky,
I think Joe Cocker ROCKS.
I grew up with his percussions leader/sax player. His name is Paul Ojibwe.
Me and him ran away from home at 13 and survived by playing acoustic guitars in the park with a big hat on the ground.
I always wanted to cut off his fingers. I would work on a song for two weeks and he would come in and get it down better than me in two seconds. He was natural, I wasn't.
He's originally from Lansing Michigan and we met up when I moved there from Chicago!
Posted by: odinseye | December 04, 2010 at 05:58 PM
ODIN, HOW MANY TIMES DID YOU MOVE IN YOUR LIFE ? every time you tell a story you say (( when i moved from so and so )) . and what's up w/ running from home at 13 ?
Posted by: ALoco | December 04, 2010 at 06:04 PM
crowder is more talk than walk...he needs to shut his mouth and prove he can play the way he says he can! he has not shown greatness....or leadership, which zach thomas showed tons of...or tackles
Posted by: redsky | December 04, 2010 at 06:07 PM
stats shats....zacks defense still gave up endless game breaking drives. he and taylor even with two great corners behind them couldn't save they day, let a million teams come back beat them on the final drive. only stat that matters is the team defense stat, not which individuals are making the plays.
Posted by: tack zhomas | December 04, 2010 at 06:12 PM
odin i always thought COCKER was GREAT, and i remember Paul Ojibwe, what ever happened to him? any way, joe cocker and george thorogood....an interesting pairing and worthwhile concert, dont ya think?
Posted by: redsky | December 04, 2010 at 06:13 PM
tack zhomas has a valid point .
Posted by: ALoco | December 04, 2010 at 06:13 PM
tack thumbass, little to no offense then, how many times you expect defense to win a game....same thing now, mostly defense, little offense.....C'mon Man!
Posted by: redsky | December 04, 2010 at 06:19 PM
Outside of making a game-sealing INT vs NE last year,
I can't recall Crowder EVER making an impact play in any game since he's been here. EVER.
I've HEARD a lot more than I've ever seen from him.
Posted by: Hurri | December 04, 2010 at 06:23 PM
redsky is a hot head, and another type of head.
Posted by: tack zhomas | December 04, 2010 at 06:25 PM
aloco, sorry to disagree with you this one time, i understand his point, but our defense has usually been stronger than our offense since the 70's and 80's....we just have not achieved that balance of synchronizing a successful running game, with a passing game and at the same time have a killer defense...not since the 70's, ok, im off my stupid soapbox and ready for a drink, or 2!
Posted by: redsky | December 04, 2010 at 06:26 PM
REDSKY, I SEE YOUR POINT ,STILL TACK zhomas has a very good point worth debating but to dismiss him is way wrong .
Posted by: ALoco | December 04, 2010 at 06:29 PM
tack, i apologize for the comment! every once in a while i have an accidental discharge, (many interpretations here) didnt mean to come across that way...i acted like some of the other idiots on this blog!

aloco youre right, and i apologize to the blog!
Posted by: redsky | December 04, 2010 at 06:31 PM
Aloco,
Until I was 12 years old I was back and forth from Chicago to Michigan with my Aunt and My real parents. No one could make me mind and I was to stupid to learn anything from anyone, I had to learn the hard way.
From 13 on I basically lived on the streets. I played in my first paying band when I was 16. From then on I lived in the equipment trucks, the backrooms of dive bars and when things were good, I would share motel rooms with band members. I lived all over the ghettos of the eastern US. It was basically a 25 year party!
When I quit the bands and the streets I went into rehab. When I got out of there, I moved in with my drug therapist from rehab.
There were a few times, inbetween bands or being too strung out to play, that I moved in with my parents. Thats when I got to coach little league and freshman football.
Thank God that I ended up with enough money to finally escape the city. I've only been up here a few years and this is the first time in my life that I've ever truly had a home to call my own.
I hope this autiobiography answers your question.
Talk about writing a novel, DC ain't got nothing on me!
Posted by: odinseye | December 04, 2010 at 06:32 PM
i enjoyed reading this very much odin. in the world more than 3 billion people and every one has a story but yours is hard to come buy .if only you knew what you know today .... still you came out a WINNER .
Posted by: ALoco | December 04, 2010 at 06:41 PM
It's strange Crowder is getting so much criticism the very week after the defense had one if its best games in history allowing only 16 yards rushing, and with the great Dansby playing a limited role, it was mostly Dobbins and Crowder inside against one of the best running teams. Ok, he is injury prone, thats an issue, and who knows how often he has been 100%, but maybe he isn't the worst ILB in the NFL either. To make a basketball analogy, maybe he is the type of player that makes more assists than hoops.
Posted by: deytreder | December 04, 2010 at 06:42 PM
odin thats awesome!!! the fact that you are still alive and a contributing member of society and this blog is admirable....but what about cocker and thorogood? interesting or no?
Posted by: redsky | December 04, 2010 at 06:43 PM
Armando's Headline......
Dolphins may not miss Crowder's contributions......
I sayu......Who in the Heck is this Crowder fellow, and does he play for us?
Posted by: Kris | December 04, 2010 at 06:44 PM
Redsky,
I haven't seen or talked to Paul Ojibwe in years. I only saw him a few times after he signed on with Cocker. I think that was sometime in the mid eighties.
I don't know if he's even alive to tell you the truth.
Out of all the people I've known in this life, he was one of only a few real and true friends that I've ever had.
Posted by: odinseye | December 04, 2010 at 06:46 PM
Darn....somebody already beat me to it....and it was funnier....well played

Posted by: ALoco | December 04, 2010 at 06:48 PM
deytrader, understood, good comment.....my humble opinion is for crowder to stop talking and let his play talk for him....again, to use zach thomas as an example, the man never bragged, he just did! in life, you either do, or do not! ergo the nike saying, just do it!

odin i will find out about paul for you, i sense a hesitancy there....for understandable reasons.
Posted by: redsky | December 04, 2010 at 06:52 PM
Yeah Redsky, he talks too much. Kind of like Ocho Cinco talking bs all the time and never living up to it. I agree, I like players that just shut up and play, but he is a bit of a comedian and did kind of get under Rex's skin last year. His jive doesn't seem to bother me too much because I think deep down he is just having fun with the media.
Posted by: deytreder | December 04, 2010 at 06:55 PM
Crowder Sucks!!!!

Posted by: Roman | December 04, 2010 at 07:13 PM
deytreder, thats a great post! you just answered my question from last night! crowder should be the player designated to accidentally hit ryan's head with his helmet! no penalty or fine for that!!!!!!
