Henne remains the starter, but evaluation coming

Despite another three-interception game, Chad Henne remains the Dolphins starting quarterback -- for now.

Dolphins coach Tony Sparano said Monday he is not considering benching Henne (again), this time for Tyler Thigpen. "No, I don’t think so right now," Sparano said.

But ...

Sparano admitted some re-evaluation will take place by the Dolphins at the quarterback position. Perhaps not now, but eventually? Absolutely. Like at the end of the season.

“Listen the guy’s a young player right now. He’s, I think, getting better at a lot of things. At the end of the year we’ll have to sit down and from our standpoint we have to evaluate the whole big picture, I mean, we really do but there’s obviously some areas there where Chad needs to continue to improve and he would tell you that. One of the areas is, is this, this turnover thing.

"We just cannot, nobody can; I mean I’m watching one of the best in the league the last couple weeks have some problems that way (Peyton Manning), so you just can’t overcome them in this league. The margin is, it’s just too hard to overcome those kind of turnovers and unfortunately what you see is the guy throwing the football doing it. We don’t see all the other factors around it and there are a lot of other factors that go into how the quarterback plays in general and, and I think what the outcome is. In other words the result of an interception or all and any of those things.

"I mean, we had two protections yesterday where for all intensive purposes we’ve blocked these protections 150 times during the course of the season and what occurred yesterday on those two protections should never occur in that particular protection but it did and he got hit as he was throwing and at the end of the day you don’t convert a third and four. That stops a drive and that kills you in some of those things. The quarterback kind of takes the blame for that and there’s a lot of people around him.

"I feel like we got to make sure that the people around him are getting better as well. That’s probably a long answer to a short question but I do think this guy’s getting better. We’re going to have to evaluate everything at the end of the year."

Seems like Henne will get at least this coming game to get out of the Cleveland hole he dug himself. If he wins, he continues. If he loses, well, he probably continues because benching him at that point would be moot. The Dolphins would be out of the playoffs for sure, rather than almost definitely out of the playoffs.

The only reason Sparano would have for benching him at that point is if the coach believes Thigpen has a better chance to win him some games and he feels the need to get himself some wins for his own job security.

It otherwise seems wise that Henne might just keep his job until the end of the season and gets those games to prove himself.

Either way, it seems the Dolphins will go quarterback shopping this offseason. They will either try to find backup help or a quarterback that can compete for the starting job. That, of course, will all depend on that evaluation of Henne that will come when 2010 is over.

Chk out Jeff Fisher's W/L % and playoff appearances; I think you'll be surprised -- not impressive.

Sparano has given Henne the dreaded vote of confidence.

Read Henne's post game press conf. in the Sentinel! He sounds retarded ( no offense to the mentally handicapped, they have an excuse, what's Henne's ?).When asked if he audibled when they ran Ricky on third and ten, Henne said he thinks so but he don't remember. Sounds like Fat Tony coached him well!!!

you can say anything and spin the truth any way you want about henne. dog crap is always dog crap no matter how you cover it up.

JB,I agree.I had a kid on my little league baseball team this year. His father drilled mechanics of pitching into his head so much that he couldn't even throw a strike. His father could not attend the last game of the season.I went out to the mound and told him to forget everything he knows about pitching and just throw the ball to the catcher...three up...three down for four innings!Chad Henne just needs to play his game and everything else will follow.

hey NHDolphan, where from in NH?

Henne will throw 2 TDs this Sunday and 3 the following and he'll be the hottest QB in the league, for a week.

I drive 3 hours to every home game and after that debacle I honestly was fed up with Henne.

Price your right, this is a "what have you done for me lately" league.
You really have to look at the complete body of work of Henne and unless you are comparing him to an "elite" QB, which he isn't. he is where he should be.

Isn't the term intents and purposes, not intensive purposes?????????? Paragraph 6.

Score one for Armando! I think he was just quoting Sparanobabble.

Hey newenglandfinfan

Keene, NH

I love being in the middle of Patriot country and rooting for the Dolphins.

Of coarse that is when we are winning...

However I hate the Jets worst of all. great game last night!

you guys are nuts if you think sparano is gonna lose his job. not his fault. but i agree that he needs to step up and tell henning to spread it out a bit. biggest change we need is oc.

how bout that jets beat down? that was great!

I watched the N.E-Jets game last night and got jealous of the Patriots use of multiple formations.Empty backfield,bunch,four-wide and so on.I forgot there were so many different possibilities....time for Henning to go.I also think Tony needs to go just for the simple fact that he doesn't seem to think anything is wrong with the offensive play calling.Maybe Henning needs a calender he might think its august still!

Things I thought about after watching NE slap the Jets around:

1. After watching Sanchez throw 3 int's and look lost against the worst pass D in the NFL, I wonder if the fans will call for his head & benching like Miami fans do.

2. How does NE find 2 TE's in 1 draft & Miami can't find any in the last 3?

3. What I wouldn't give to have the NE offensive mindset. Attacking & aggressive for 4 quarters vs. slow conservative, let's try to hold on.

4. What I wouldn't give to have the NE offensive playbook. What variation, creativity & diversity! I don't think I saw them run the same play twice last night!

Let's face it, with all their young talent & stock piled draft picks this coming draft, as long as Brady can throw a ball, NE will be the team to beat. Miami has NONE of what makes NE a great team. Coaching, talent, scouting & Management.

I can't believe I have been hearing requests for trading draft picks for kevin Kolb?!?! Is Rick Spielman on this blog? Like another poster suggested, Kolb is the exact replica as Chad Henne at this point in his development. I think they were even selected one pick apart in the draft. Why use draft picks for Kolb? You might as well just donate the picks to the Pats as a token of inter division goodwill - it would have the same effect.

I can't beleive whether starting Henne the rest of the way is even discussion. Of course you have to start him - you have to find out if he's your guy. Over the last 4 games he will either:

a) Go on a hot streak and give the team confidence that they can trust him for another year to see if he can reach the next level.

b) He will completely tank and pull Miami back in the standings and into a draft position for a Ryan Mallett perhaps or whoever these guys think is a franchise qb (my own preference is Mallett - he's the most ready to play soon and has the gunslinger mentality and giant arm).

c) He will be hot and cold and the same Henne he is now and in that case you bring someone in to challenge him and not necessarily through the draft and make him win the job next year.

There is no upside to starting anyone else - this is owed to the franchise and the fans who have suffered through uneven qb play for way too long.

remember sammy that sparano did not hire henning. tuna did. so mabey after this season henning retires and sparano can bring in a new oc

Speaking of the game last night, what did we get when we sent Welker to New England????

R u kidding mando? murdering Jim Leyritz on your show...u r a true retard

Sporano needs to light a damn fire under this lazy effortless team.He is more pumped up than they are.If he can't motivate them to play harder than we need to find someone who can.

fire rex and bench sanchez is what they are talking about this a.m. right?

What have you done for me lately is what I take from most of you. Gruden??? What has he done in this league? Nothing, he had a QB that had 10 years under his belt in Oakland, when he went to TB he won just one year with Dungy's team and blew the thing up there.
Shaggy, thanks for the info that is what I was thinking as well. Give the kid a chance, Marino was a once in a lifetime QB that never won the big game either, but is still my favorite QB of all time.
I like Sparano, but not Henning. I did not like Henning in Carolina nor Washington or anywhere for that matter. I thought about Josh but I think he is a head case as well. SO with that I am not sure as to where to go for an OC, maybe Baltimore has an up and coming assistant that could be a bright spot.
I think we need to look at Right Takle, RB, ILB and corner in the draft. The corner should be a Al Harris type for nickle, RB shoudl be a Ray Rice type, ILB someone to replace Crowder.
We need to give Ireland at least two years on his own. The NFL is about luck, Brady was a 6th round draft choice not first so everyone got that wrong. It is easy to be a tuesday morning coach.

I say next year we take go get Gruden or Cowher I think one of think let go get Ryan Mallett with are first pick next year and screw henne and traded him after this season.

I think we should give our third string Q.B. a shot!!! Thats right we don't have one. Must be because Henne's so great!

Nice post Joe,

Sanchez is every bit the equal of Chad Henne yet because of the team records Henne is viewed as a bum by the fans while Sanchez is an up and comer - go figure.

Not only did NE find 2 tight ends bt so did Baltimore - they found two nice young ones in Dennis Pitta (BYU) and Ed Hickson (Oregon) even though they already have Todd Heap. That's what happens when you have a depp roster and don't have to draft for need like these two teams have. You can afford to draft the best player available regardless of position. Miami should be there now but aren't because these administration really screwed the pooch on the o-line. They have at least 3 picks they need to make out of necessity this year (RT, G/C, RB).

Joe..that's what I mean.Use the F'in playbook to confuse the defense...novel idea huh?Heck,Henne might look a little better if the other teams defense had less than a 50-50 chance of guessing our plays!

If the past is a window to the future it will be C. It would be so much easier to have it A or B but few things in life are easy. A new dynamic could start to creep in at this point as we're essentially out of the playoffs. Will the team tank or will they keep fighting? This could be a glimpse of how they feel about the coaching staff in my opinion.

Totally agree though, there would be no upside in not giving Henne all the snaps the rest of the season. The team in crisis should take on the personality of their leaders (QB, coaches). How will they respond?

i really wanted miami to pick up that hernandez kid from UF

Bow here. Fin fan since '70, and grew up on Long Island, so I know all three sides of this equation. And yes, I was pulling for the Pats last nite too, because my hate for the Jets goes that deep! Just shut your huge pie hole now would ya Rex!! a national tv beatdown! Fins can beat the Yets -- they were exposed big time last night, on both sides of the ball. Hopefully the coaching staff was watching, altho it was probably past Henning's bedtime -- at 7. Right now our D is better than the Yets, IMHO, and we have a QB with training wheels just like the Yets. Hopefully the fins just let it all hang out for the rest of the season. The sad part: had we won on Sunday, Fins would've been right in the thick of the WC race! Well, keep Fin-rooting here in NH, and now Brady can tear his ACL again!! haha.

You guys who want to keep Henne are complete idiots...He is a back up at best..Marino retires and we fall apart ...lets go get us a Marino !!!!!

I don't know why everyone is so critical. Just think of all the field goals we got this year!!!!! That's why Sparano is so happy and does the truffle shuffle on the sideline!

So TRUE w the formations last nite, Sammy29!! So damn TRUE!!

Ask yourself 1 question....Where are we the weakest ?

Answer - QB !

Mark in Toronto,

Watching the game last night I was truly jealous of the Pats. They have EVERYTHING you need to win in the NFL. From players to coaches to Management.

To me, Miami's needs run a little deeper than you list. Between the draft & FA, I think this team goes nowhere until we find a: fast TE, fast RB, C, LG(Make Garner the starter), RT, ILB, OLB, FS, ST ace & 2 CB's to replace Sapp & Harris.

You can throw QB into the equation also but I really don't think QB is as big of a priority as everyone seems to think it is. We have mega holes which, if filled, just might improve the QB play.

I also found it fascinating to watch a running back hit the hole at full speed and with conviction!I sometimes wonder if RB and RW believe in themselves anymore.Sad really as I like both players.

Great post Joe Schmoe -- True that, as my kid would say.

I don't wanna beat up on our "D" as they are the high point of this season but,can we please cover a tight end? It's been three years of TE's running wild over the middle and in the seam...somebody needs to make them pay!

Joe..please add a fearless speedy WR to your list!!!

No, that's not true. No one who pays attention thinks Sanchez is superior to Henne because of team records. He is superior "at this point" because he leads his team down the field in the 4th quarter and wins games. Henne is at the bottom of the AFC in most 4th quarter categories and has shown absolutely nothing with the game on the line.

Wakeup, why don't you find us the QB tree where Hall of Famers grow so we can pluck one! For god sakes, the naivety. Dan Marino's don't come out of college every year.

Maybe, JUST MAYBE, Henne would be better if he had a realiable O-line? How about a dependable RB? A TE threat? I would take 1 of the 3 but the fact is Miami needs ALL 3!

Top draft needs IMHO:

Interior O line help;
game breaking RB;
game changing WR/KR;
big, fast TE;

This should be an all out O draft unless a gem falls in our lap that we can't refuse. It would be real nice to trade down from our 1 spot too...

Joe, I don't know if our needs are as deep as you say they are. Frankly, I like Sean Smith - say what you want about him - but he's like Channing Crowder with our run defence - the stats don't show up but you can't ignore that since he came in - our pass defence has sky-rocketed up to 4th in the league (before last game), you have to give Misi a chance to grow at OLB - he's been good the last few weeks, and Fs has been pretty good with Clemons/Jones - I mean, we are 4th in the league in pass defence despite facing ALL the top qbs this year (except Peyton who is having an off year). The secondary must be doing something right. And anyone who thinks Ryan Clark would be better needs to see the tape from Sunday night to see Boldin race by him down the field on the long TD. That was money well saved.

Chris,I think alot of that has to do with the diversity of the play calling as well.We might wanna look into that screen pass thingy I see from other teams on sundays...it might beven slow down that blitz problem we keep encountering in the red zone...oh,and maybe even throw out of the wildcat once in a while if we insist on using it.

Sammy, I had a speedy WR alla Steve Breaston on the list yesterday. In all honesty, if we had some speed at TE & RB, it would be the same thing. I'd actually prefer speed at RB. What a mismatch against LB'ers it would be. Like what Woodhead & Ray Rice did to us.

Since we need a TE & Rb anyway, it's best if we get speed there & not add another need to our list.

Chris, Sanchez is not better than Henne - no way - no how. Look at the Jets weapons - great O-line, awesome TE, excellent WRs, great running game - he has it all.

Yeah Joe you are probably right...I still want one though!

If we insist on the WC, why then not put Thigpen in there to be a threat to toss it? Or, he can keep it and gain 8 yds as he did against Chic. Henning is gone as soon as the NE game is over!

I can't help but feel like when I trace the problem back from Henne it goes Henning..Sporano.Tony is allowing this to happen week in and week out.It is not uncommon in these types of situations for a HC to take the play calling responsibily away from the OC if he is not getting it done. That said..if Tony is not taking these steps to allow his team a chance to win then he is not doing his job either.

Tony doesn't get it. He's such a bafoon. This team has no heart and no killer instinct. Honestly, he and Henne needs to go.

Along with the anti-Kolb argument (which I totally agree with) can everyone PLEASE stop talking about Gruden? I live in Tampa and watched what he did to the Bucs after taking Dungy's team to the Super Bowl. What has Gruden won? Nothing. Why in the name of ALL that is Holy would anyone think he is the one to "save the Dolphins"? He's just a NAME. If you want to hand the reigns over to a name, at least give it to someone with a LONG winning track record, like Cowher.

You guys are all missing the point! We need more field goals.....

If Sanchez is so good because he has "all these great weapons", then why aren't we getting better players? It's because Henne needs to do his part. In one game, he made Fasano look all world, another made Bess an all pro... the guy is just not consistent to be a starter.

Batman,I agree.Gruden is so busy making his stupid Chucky faces on the sidelines he can barely find time to coach.I do like his playbook and passion for the game though.

Anybody that believes Henne is gone is a total tool. Sanchez showed last night a young QB going thru growing pains, same as Henne. Will we bring in a QB to compete? yea, we need to. 940 AM just RIPPED the Dolphin fans for their defeatist and no patience attitude. The man was 100% correct. After last night, Jets are beatable, Det and Buffalo should be wins and the Pats might not care about last game. 4 game streak with Henne playing well will make a lot of folks happy

At least until new information unfolds on Sanchez and/or Henne we will have to agree to disagree Mark. In the end I hope you're right but my eyes tell me otherwise at this point.

I think Henne needs to just freakin' relax and play football.

If Henne is gone..we are in deep doo-doo.Believe that.I don't see an answer in the draft either. We need to play the cards that are dealt.I'm kinda glad we are in this boat otherwise we might be tempted to take a QB in the first round and dismiss Henne a little too soon.We have bigger problems than the QB position at this point.

batman1113, thank u for some common sense on Gruden. Gruden tore apart a Super Bowl Team that wasnt even put together by him. Cowher took how many years to win a SuperBowl? Dolphin fans cant give this FO 3 years to fix a 1-15 disaster much less wait 14 years for Cowher to win a SuperBowl LMAO Get Real

I was just as sick as everyone else on sunday but I am not foolish either.
